letter from the EDITOR Welcome to Los Cabos! In the first few pages of Destino Magazine you can find useful information that will help you maximize your vacation, such as activities, top beaches to visit, maps, important phone numbers, and more. You can also find all this information online at www.DestinoMagazine.com. You are in luck to be here in November, my favorite month in Cabo. The weather cools down, but the ocean water remains warm and inviting. Although our leaves (or cactus?) don't change colors down here, we feel the fall season come along with exciting events and celebrations. Early in the month Mexico celebrates de very popular, and deeply culturally significant, Day of the Dead. I invite you to learn more about this colorful tradition inside the pages of this issue. Locally, the Art Walk season in San Jose begins, the Los Cabos Film Festival brings stars and celebrities, and typically the Sabor a Cabo culinary festival takes place, although this year it has been moved to the month of December. "CULTURAL" may not be a word you would use to describe Cabo, but there is much more to Los Cabos than it's phenomenal fishing, worldclass golf, paradisiac beaches and it's exciting party scene. Internationally known events take place year round in Los Cabos, such as film festivals, music festivals, culinary expos, and much more. Imagine strolling down a cobbled stone street surrounded by colourful colonial buildings. This may sound like a scene from a European city, but you don't have to go that far, simply visit the historical downtown in San Jose del Cabo. I highly recommend spending an afternoon and evening in San Jose's evergrowing Gallery District to learn more about our local culture. It will enrich your vacation experience, and your life!

des tinations - useful information - maps - top beaches - thing s to do

Los Cabos (the capes) is located in the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of four main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape. La Paz is the Capital of the state, however, technically it is not part of the municipality of Los Cabos. If you take a look at the Baja Sur map you can see that the highways and towns form a loop. The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet at the very tip of the peninsula. It's very clear when you're on the Pacific side; the waves are much larger and powerful and the winds are stronger. If you go further north along the Pacific side the climate and beaches are very different than on the Sea of Cortez. It's usually a few degrees cooler, which is very pleasant during the warm summer months. In the Pescadero and Todos Santos area, the sand is dark and fine and the color of the water is deep blue. The sand in Sea of Cortez beaches is coarser and the water is a lighter tone of blue. The beaches in La Paz and the surrounding areas are possibly the most beautiful ones in Baja Sur. The white powdery sand and the waist-high water create a spectacular shade of turquoise, the kind you see in postcards. The mountains meet the desert, the desert meets the ocean. The Sierra de la Laguna is a mountain range that lies at the southern end of the peninsula. Above 800 meters in elevation dry forests transition to pine-oak forests. The main climate of the region is arid to semi-arid, however, there are very fertile areas where local farmers grow a variety of fruits and vegetables, especially on the Pacific side. The aquarium of the world. These are the words that Jacques Cousteau used to describe the Sea of Cortez. It is said that eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of varieties of fish and mammals found their way into this “trap” and either stayed in its warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool bottom of the two mile-deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. In the months of January through March, Gray whales make their yearly migration from Alaska to give birth to their young in the shallow and warm waters of the Sea of Cortez. 4

Cabo San Lucas

This tourist friendly town, also just known as “Cabo,” is located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula and is full of entertainment for every age and liking. The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet at Land’s End, where you can observe the beautiful rock formations and the famous Cabo arch. In Cabo San Lucas you can find Medano Beach, the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area, an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night.

San José del Cabo

Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district as well as world-class restaurants. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride to explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.

The Corridor

The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 20 minute drive). Along this road you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, championship golf courses and beautiful views. Have your camera ready and make a roadside stop at the Costa Azul view-point for photo opportunities and a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut).

Todos Santos

Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José due to the breezes coming from the Pacific.

East Cape

People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, an eight fingered coral reef that offers outstanding snorkelling and scuba diving and turtle nesting on the beach. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and folks who just want to get away from it all.

La Paz

La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waist high water at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer.

Loreto

Loreto is a place where you'll find historic buildings such as the enchanting Mision de Loreto - a missionstyle church that was built in 1697. Loreto offers the best of both worlds for tourists who long to escape to an 'authentic-Mexico' with settings that take you back-in-time along with ocean activities that rival that of any other modern coastal city. The Islands of Loreto boast Mexico's largest marine preserve where dolphins, seals, turtles and sea lions all play in the sea. For those who are partial to adventures on land; there is hiking, biking, and nature-tours that fill up a camera with pictures of radiant natural settings. Loreto is the perfect place for everyone from honeymooners to large families.

Exchange rates - Dollars are accepted almost everywhere and you will get your change in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate.

Cash or Card? - Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted, but you often run into cash only places. Always ask beforehand and carry cash. Your bank will most likely charge you international transaction fees if you pay with your card.

ATMs - The easiest way to get pesos is to simply withdraw money from an ATM in Los Cabos. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate (best possible rate). Examples include Banorte, Bancomer, Santander, Banamex, and HSBC. Non-bank ATMs located in the street will charge higher fees. Some ATMs only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing and try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high fees.

Driving - Renting a car will allow you to enjoy the freedom of exploring Los Cabos. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there is some organization within the chaos. If you are pulled over by local police for committing a driving infraction, the standard procedure is for them to take your Driver’s License. You will then have to go to the Police Station to pay your ticket and pick-up your license. There are two types of gasoline: Magna, which is regular, and Premium. Lleno (pronounced yeno) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos is customary. ALTO STOP

Buying groceries - In Cabo San Lucas, Wal-Mart and Costco are good options and easy to get to. You can always find a taxi outside of these stores. San José has a Wal-Mart and Mega. If you just need to grab something quickly, OXXO stores are small, reasonably priced convenient stores located all over town.

BAJA 101 make an effort to arrive early; snorkelling visibility is often better in the mornings, you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours and, if you beat the crowds, you’ll be guaranteed a palapa to yourself for much-needed shade. Bring snorkelling gear!

Los Cabos' must-see beaches

Cabo San Lucas MEDANO BEACH If you’re looking for the action, here it is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2-mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars, right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and familyfriendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. Numerous activities and water sports are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the best spot to do it. Its stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see. Location: In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. The beach is accessible by foot through the east side of the marina or via Avenida del Pescador. Tips: Be prepared to be approached by souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “No, gracias.” Prices don’t vary much from one water sports rental place to another. Visit Lover’s Beach while you’re there. LOVER’S BEACH Getting there is an adventure in itself, due to the fact that it is reachable only by boat or kayak. The easiest way is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Prices are around $15.00 USD per person. Ask your captain to cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Once you arrive, 6

SANTA MARIA Santa Maria offers a stunning horseshoe cove with coarse coral-colored sand and abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkelling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family-friendly beach is relatively secluded; therefore, you rarely run into beach vendors. Location: Travelling west from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the sign which reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. Tips: Santa Maria has brand new palapas and a wooden walkway. Swim from the shore towards the rocks on the right side of the beach for a great snorkeling experience.

San Jose del Cabo

you’ll notice the striking rock formations and caves. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean; the locals call this Divorce Beach. This side is very dangerous for swimming because of the powerful undertow, so swim on Lover’s Beach only. Location: Land’s End beside the famous arch. This beach is accessible only by boat. Tips: There are a couple of vendors who offer beer and water, but you won’t find any other services. A good idea is to spend the day at Medano Beach and take an hour or two to go to Lover’s Beach; this should be time enough to explore this natural wonderland.

Along the Corridor CHILENO

Chileno is a very popular location for snorkelling, swimming or just spending the day under the newly-installed palapas. You’ll find tide pools at the east end of the beach and beautiful reefs offering excellent snorkelling and scuba diving. This is the only beach with public restrooms and it has plenty of palapas for shade. Location: Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near Km. 14 of the main highway. Tips: If you visit Chileno on a weekend,

PALMILLA Palmilla beach is known for its family-friendly calm waters and a mile-long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes, the One&Only Hotel and the world renowned Jack Nicklaus Ocean Nine golf course. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter, but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis. Location: Take the Palmilla ramp exit at Km. 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel. Tips: Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa, or bring your own umbrella. No services are available here. COSTA AZUL If what you’re looking for is a good surf spot you can find it here without driving out of town. Head over to Zipper’s for a surf session and lunch and beers at the restaurant. To the west of Zippers is Acapulquito beach where the Cabo Surf Hotel and

Mike Doyle Surf School are located. You can find surf shops in the area where you can rent surf and stand-up paddle boards and set up lessons. The surf is bigger during the summer, and in the winter this is a good spot for snorkelling and swimming. Location: Exit into the arroyo at Km. 28 via the Costa Azul Bridge. Tips: Swimming with caution is possible in this area but keep an eye out for surfers. LA PLAYITA La Playita (the little beach) is a long stretch of beach where you will often find locals fishing from the shore and families with children enjoying the beach-front playground. On the right end of La Playita you can find a roped-off swimming area just outside the entrance to the beautiful Puerto Los Cabos 500slip marina. To the left is the natural open beach where you can swim, skim-board and enjoy a peaceful beach day away from the crowds. Location: Follow the signs to La Playita/Puerto Los Cabos from Boulevard Mijares in downtown San José del Cabo (across from the fire department). Tips: You will find new and wellmaintained bathrooms, palapas and fishing charters. There are no food services directly on the beach, but several casual restaurants in the surrounding area.

Pacific Side

CERRITOS Cerritos beach is a popular surf spot and swimming here is relatively safe. The scenic 45-minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant is a perfect spot to spend a relaxing day, maybe even get a massage on the beach. If you want to be active, you can take a surf lesson at Baja Surf Camp or rent surf and boogie boards at the Costa Azul Surf Shop. Location: Exit at Km. 66 of the Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos Highway. Watch the markers and look for the signs. Drive about 1.7 miles to the beach area. Tips: Lounge chairs, restrooms, food and drinks are available at The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant. The ocean currents are strong and the waves can be quite powerful on a big day, so swim with caution.

BOATING & FISHING

With calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather, some may argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa María Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, there are endless options to fit your needs.

FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate, no matter what your level of fishing experience is. What to Expect Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment.

FISHING REPORT All that’s fishy from Lands End to La Paz by Gary Graham

Some also include food and drink or these amenities can be added at an additional cost. It is better to leave early; trips usually begin at 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. It is customary to leave the crew a gratuity of 15% to 20%. Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait, you may buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire may also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

Seasonal Fishing Chart

BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are several charter companies that can accommodate your needs. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour of the landmark arch, a few hours of fishing, and a cruise to one of our beautiful bays for a swim. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the biggest difference between a yacht and a fishing boat rental is the cost. Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers, pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option. Cruisers accommodate larger groups and are more comfortable when the sea is rough on a windy day. THE MARINAS Marina Cabo San Lucas, the area’s largest commercial marina, features 380 slips and accommodates vessels of up to 375 feet. Amenities include 24-hour security, electricity and potable water, a fuel dock, and convenient laundry and shower facilities. Puerto Los Cabos, located in La Playita just north of San José del Cabo, is the new10

With sea temps hovering in the high 80s, "being in hot water" is a good thing – as the hot water attracts wolf packs of feeding sailfish. As the weather turns into fall and the waters begin to cool, the larger striped marlin, as well as the blue and black marlin, will dominate the billfish scene around Baja's tip in both the Pacific and Sea of Cortez, thrilling those who come seeking the ultimate big-game sportfishing experience for some of the largest fish in the ocean. Schools of small skipjack and yellowfin tuna often referred to as "footballs" because of their size and shape, serve several purposes -- on light tackle they are a hoot, plus they are an important food source for the larger billfish and huge yellowfin tuna that can reach up to 400+ pounds, earning them the description "cow-sized." With large schools of the footballs being reported from La Paz to the tip, this could be a banner year for the larger "cows." They are such a popular catch that a tournament in early November targets them, offering large sums of prize money to those who catch the largest. The wahoo snap that we have been reporting all summer, surprisingly continues. Seldom targeted, many times they are a bonus bite while trolling. They are one of the fastest fish in the ocean and grilled wahoo steaks are a gourmet’s delight. Inshore the dorado frolic -- fun to catch and so far, they are plentiful. However, most are small and should be released until a larger one shows up. The bottom fishing on various high spots or pinnacles has been very productive for many. The list is varied: pargo, rainbow runners, yellowtail, pompano, amberjack and tons of triggers. The one trait they all share is they are tough fighters and excellent table fare. Unlike home for most, wherever that is, winter looms. Here in Baja, November is just another word for sunny days and more good fishing. Buena Suerte!

SNORKELLING & SCUBA DIVING

Prepare yourself for an incredible show of nature as you swim side by side with colourful schools of fish, eels, rays, octopus, sea turtles and more. The Sea of Cortez or the “Aquarium of the World” offers many opportunities to experience incredible underwater wildlife.

SCUBA DIVING DESTINATIONS Note: travel time is from the Cabo San Lucas marina. Land’s End Intermediate-Advanced - 50’-60’ Five minutes by boat and you can share the water with sea lions and moray eels, with a sunken boat visible in the Falls. Sand Falls Beginners - Advanced - 30’-100’ Steep sand banks drop sharply into a canyon filled with tropical fish. The canyon runs from the depths of the Cabo San Lucas bay to within 30 feet of the beach. Pelican Rock Beginners - 25’-80’ This large rock attracts many tropical fish and is only five minutes from shore. Neptune’s Finger Advanced - 80’-100’ A spectacular canyon wall dive. Cabeza de Ballena Beginners - 20’-40’ A 25-minute boat ride leads to a dive through large boulders with many fish. Santa María Cave Beginners - 20’-40’ Reachable from the shore or a 35-minute boat ride, the entrance to Santa Maria canyon has a huge variety of fish which feed right from your hand. Chileno Beginners - 30’-70’ This location offers parking, sea turtle sightings, tropical fish, and night dives over a sandy and rocky bottom following a 35-minute boat ride. El Gavilán Intermediate/Advanced - 70’-100’ This rocky ledge leads into a canyon where groupers and larger fish are often sighted; 35 minutes by boat. Blow Hole Beginners/Advanced - 30’-70’ 35-minutes from San Lucas, or just 10 minutes from Chileno beach, this dive

offers rocky valleys presenting a variety of fish. Las Salinas Beginners - 30’-45’ - A sunken Japanese fishing boat attracts a large assortment of fish at this beginners’ dive; about 80 minutes from Cabo San Lucas or one hour from La Playita. Gordo Banks Advanced - 110’-120’ - A seamount provides views of marlin, hammerheads, skip jacks and at times huge manta rays; one hour from La Playita. Cabo Pulmo Beginner-Advanced - 30’-100’ A one hour drive east of San José or five minutes by boat and you’ll find the only living coral reef in the Sea of Cortez. SNORKELLING SPOTS Cabo offers several methods for snorkelling. You may drive to a local beach and swim out, book a tour with one of the many popular companies, or charter a private boat. Tours are typically two or three hours. Stay away from the Pacific side of the peninsula; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports. Pelican Rock

A quick five-minute ride from the Cabo San Lucas marina or Medano Beach is all it takes to get to this fish-attracting rock.

Lover’s Beach This popular and uniquely-named beach is accessible only by boat. Be on the look-out, however, as the water is not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Bay Snorkel tours regularly visit Santa Maria Bay. If you choose to drive there, it’s an easy swim from the shore to the reef on the right side of the cove. Chileno Bay Snorkelers will find a safe, roped-off area for swimming at this common tour destination. Cabo Pulmo A Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkelling in the area. This eightfingered coral reef is about a 2-hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it!

GOLFING

With the desert meeting the Sea of Cortez as a backdrop, there is no doubt why Los Cabos has become a championship golf destination over the years. From Tiger Woods to Nicklaus and Fazio, many of the big names in golf have designed courses on this unique landscape. CABO REAL The newly renovated Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed golf course is one of the Corridor’s first championship courses and boasts beautiful views of the Sea of Cortez, elevation changes, and has hosted two PGA Senior Slams. 18 holes, Par 73, 7,461 yards. (624) 173-9400 www.questrogolf.com Many courses offer a reduced rate later in the day during twilight hours. Appropriate golf attire is required on all courses and club rental prices range from $35 to $ 65. CABO DEL SOL Ocean Course - A Jack Nicklaus signature course with six ocean front holes (1.5 miles). Known for its “3 finest finishing holes in golf” the Ocean Course is said to be one of the most difficult yet beautiful courses in the area. 18 holes, 7,075 yards, par 72. Desert Course – Designed by Tom Weiskopf, this course winds through the desert above the Ocean Course and challenges the golfer with risk vs reward type decision-making. 18 holes, 7,049 yards, par 72. (624) 145-8200 www.cabodelsol.com CABO SAN LUCAS COUNTRY CLUB This course was designed by Roy Dye and is conveniently located outside of Cabo San Lucas and is the only one with views of Land’s End. It has more than 80 bunkers and slightly inclined fairways and one of the longest holes in all of Mexico at 610 yards. 18 holes, 7,220 yards, par 72. (624) 143 4654 www.cabosanlucascountryclub.com PUERTO LOS CABOS The only composite course in the area with two different 9 hole courses designed by two legends of golf, Jack Nicklaus and Greg Norman respectively. FLYBOARDING

Have you ever had a dream about flying like Superman or maybe swimming like a dolphin? Dreams can come true in Cabo! The FlyBoard is a device connected and powered by a personal watercraft, which allows propulsion underwater and in the air. Users are connected to the board by wakeboard boots, under which, water pressure provides thrust. A certified trainer controls the power and height and you control all the movement. Available at Medano beach or in the Puerto Los Cabos Marina in San José del Cabo.

KITE SURFING

This sport is most popular in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (the north-east side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kite-boarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December.

STAND UP PADDLING

There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just a paddle and a board. Stand up paddling is a great way to see marine life and to get a great workout and while enjoying nature. At Medano beach you can rent boards in several locations. Certain companies offer paddling lessons and some have yoga classes on the board. Tips! • Your feet should be parallel, about hip-width distance apart, centred between the board rails (edges). • Keep toes pointed forward, knees bent and your back straight. Balance with your hips and core. Keep your arms straight and twist from your torso as you paddle, you have more strength in the abdominal muscles than in your arms. Your gaze should be level at the horizon and avoid staring at your feet. • If you’re paddling on the right, your right hand is lower and on the paddle shaft. Your top left hand is on the top of the grip. The elbow (angle) of the paddle faces away from you. • Plant the paddle by pushing the blade all the way under the surface, pull it back to your ankle, then out of the water. To go in a reasonably straight line, paddle about 4 or 5 strokes on one side, then switch to the other. When you switch sides, you’ll reverse hand positions. • When you fall aim yourself to the side so you don’t fall the board.

SKATEBOARDING

Visit the Pescadero Skate Park located on km. 64 of HWY 19, in the town of El Pescadero. The park is surrounded by lush gardens. Donations are appreciated for park maintenence.

ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES

Los Cabos is an ideal destination for families with children of all ages. Adventure Parks There are several adventure parks and eco-adventure companies in Los Cabos where you and your kids can experience zip-lining, back-country ATV tours, a camel safari, and more. Zip-lines are appropriate for kids of 8 years and up and be prepared to hike from 5 to 15 minutes from line to line. Most companies include transportation. Ask your concierge to set-up your adventure. Wet Fun Water Park Located about 20 minutes from San José, this water park has shallow pools and small slides for young children, water mushrooms, a pirate ship and a giant bucket that dumps water on the bystanders bellow. For the adrenaline seekers, several fast and large slides stand tall and mighty and offer a great view of the beautiful surrounding mountains. To get there take HWY 1 north from the San José International Airport towards La Paz and East Cape. After about 15 miles, the exit for Caudaño and the water park will be at km 66. Follow this road for a few minutes and you will find the park on your right. Turtle Release Every year, several species of endangered sea turtles nest in the warm sands of Los Cabos. Your family will have the opportunity to help these fragile and tiny creatures make it safely into the sea. Children will learn about the importance of conservation and they will surely enjoy the experience of helping these little friends. Sol de Mayo Waterfall Cascade Located about an hour and a half away from Los Cabos, the Sol de Mayo Oasis is yet another natural beauty of the Southern Baja California region, and the best time to visit is the month of November, after the September and October rains. The hike leads the adventurous to a majestically beautiful oasis where everyone can swim and even dive into the cool, serene waters. Be sure to pack a lunch, and take plenty of water. There are plenty of signs to guide everyone to this wonderful piece of paradise. After arriving in Santiago, turn right up the little hill towards the town square. The cost is $6 US per person to access the easy hike to the clearwater falls.

Species of flora and fauna are abundant: dozens of species of cactus, lizards, and birds can be spotted on this solitary walk, just a few minutes from downtown. Cactus-lovers may also want to check out the nearby cactus gardens Wirikuta, offering a large variety of cacti laid out in an artful outdoor setting. Several local adventure-parks provide bungee jumping packages and high speed zipline canopy tours are offered in a number of local canyons. If heights over land are not right for you, try a parasailing trip and gain some altitude to enjoy beautiful views of Cabo while tethered firmly to a speedboat! 13

ART&CULTURE

¡Silencio, cámara, acción! The success

of the Los Cabos Film Festival as an international forum for the film industry is certainly a result of a Mexican identity which flourishes when engaged in cultural and artistic expression. Visionaries see cinema as a universe of potentiality, a way to explore all aspects of culture: spiritual, political, social, economic, and artistic. Writers, actors, composers, directors and producers unite here, in the desert by the sea, and enjoy a simple Mexican resort town. Here, they are offered a platform for their creative expression, a space to tell their story; as many others do, they come to Los Cabos to be inspired. Come and see what the neighbors are doing. Mexico, the USA and Canada showcase their best films to the world, November 11 - 15. México Primero, Cabos In Progress, and Cabos Discovery are some of the awards that will be given to participants in 2015. Today, as admired Mexican filmmakers succeed to the highest levels of international acclaim, perhaps it is only one common truth that comes across: their success is Mexico’s success. We applaud the Los Cabos Film Festival and vow to its intention to remind us all of how wonderful it is to embrace the extraordinary potential we all have to create abundance at home, and share it with the world. Bravo! Dane Posey, who you know as one of Destino writers, is also an actor in one of the films that made a California festival circuit (We’ve Got Balls). Next, he tells us about the life-changing stakes involved that we may not even realize at a festival. We agree when he says that even if we don’t recognize any of the films that are being shown it is important to support this art form. Hey! It is the stories we tell each other that creates the world. “Imagine you are a filmmaker relatively unknown

to most of the general population. Sure, you have made some well-regarded pieces in the past. Perhaps there is a percentage of the population that tweets you fan mail and your Facebook page is filled with “Likes.” That is not the point. You met the July 31st submission deadline with four DVD copies, meticulously maintained and only handled with latex gloves to prevent scratching. You waited patiently, checking your email inbox every hour on the hour, and often in between, until October 15th. After refreshing your screen every minute throughout the morning, you saw on the cabosfilmfestival.com website that your film, your passion, currently in PostProduction and from Mexico, had been selected to show at the International Los Cabos Film Festival! You spent the better part of two full years pouring your heart and money into getting this project off the ground. You suffered all of the early morning call times, the crew no-shows, and the last-second averted disasters to tell a story that you believe in your heart needs to be shared with the world. Through a program called “Cabos in Progress,” funded jointly by the Gabriel Figueroa Film Fund and Labodigital, whose aim is to ensure production of high quality films with unique artistic visions, your film is now one of six to compete for up to $189,000 in prizes. You could even be on your way to Cannes to show your work at the 2016 Marché du Film or have it shown through FOX’s package of channels, broadcast throughout Latin America, with a $30,000 rights advance. Dazed from the flurry of flash photography that greeted you as you entered the theater on the red carpet, you find your lucky seat. As the lights dim and the smell of Valentina hot sauce-covered popcorn lingers in the air, your heart is beating so hard that you worry it may distract other filmgoers from hearing the Dolby digital surround sound. The opening credits roll and your eyes burn as beads of sweat mix with the SPF 15 you applied in the morning. The next 71 minutes of running time pass by as a blur. The audience is enchanted, and by the time the film’s poignant story concludes, they turn to you in unison and applaud. All of the effort has paid off. As you glance at your notes, you notice seven pages that you must have scribbled with ideas of how to further improve the piece in post before completion. This is the first day of the rest of your new life. The International Los Cabos Film Festival has grown exponentially since its inception in 2012, attracting over 15,000 attendees last year. Reese Witherspoon, Diego Luna, Piers Handling, Rosario Dawson, industry buyers, studio reps, renowned film professionals, all hobnob over Mezcal and Antojitos with the Cabo San Lucas Arch as the backdrop. Now imagine that you are you, and you live in Los Cabos or are privileged enough to be vacationing in the area November 11 - 15. All of this excitement is happening in downtown Cabo San Lucas, where you can meet the filmmakers, hear their stories, and grab the last quesadilla off the tray before Ed Norton snags it. See you at the box office! *

Giving Back: Fundación Tres Deseos By Sabrina Lear Fun da c i ó n Tre s D e s e o s w as fo un d e d a decade ago with the mission to “create key opportunities that open doors to responsibility, opportunity, and education through artistic expression for the youth of Los Cabos,” Fundación Tres Deseos (Three Wishes Foundation) may not be on your nonprofit radar. But that could all change soon. Now that Cabo San Lucas’ Circuito Cultural (Cultural Circuit) is back in full swing down at the marina Saturday nights, Tres Deseos is excited to be there and share what it does: bringing art and music to underprivileged kids hungry to live their dreams. With the help of local artists and musicians, volunteers are offering weekly classes, along with reaching out to the boys at the Casa Hogar orphanage. Existing entirely on donations and sales from its Shabby Chic Boutique, a unique resale shop in the Plaza Nautica courtyard, the lean nonprofit explores and networks to stay alive. Percusion Limanya, well known throughout Los Cabos for its use of traditional instruments from ethnic tribes in Guinea, Africa, has had a longstanding relationship mentoring budding musical talent. Artists share their gift of creativity, from drawing and painting classes to inspirational murals and public art projects. By bringing the arts to kids, Tres Deseos believes that doors open wide when imagination thrives. While many nonprofits are focused on basic needs, health, and education — and rightly so — it’s good to know that one small group has a big heart for art. Stop by the Tres Deseos booth on Saturday nights and meet the team. Volunteers are always needed; it’s a wonderful way to share your talent and give back to our Los Cabos community. For more information, call 624 141 6700, or visit Fundación Tres Deseos on Facebook. Let’s get the word out, Tres Deseos deserves your support for the arts.

El corcho de Alegría

When it comes to events like Circuito Cultural and what’s going on in Los Cabos and throughout the Cape Region, El Corcho de Alegría (Alegría’s cork board) is the go-to place for locals in the know. If you’re missing out, or want to know when and where the Los Cabos Youth Orchestra is performing next, don’t miss it. Visit the Facebook page, or have El Corcho delivered to your inbox. A very big shout-out to Alegría for keeping us informed. *

SAN JOSE DEL CABO

View art and enjoy a glass of wine as you stroll the enchanting streets of the Gallery District in downtown San Jose del Cabo. End your night with a dining experience at one of the many exquisite restaurants in the area. From the month of November through June, the Art Walk takes place every Thursday from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm, but the art itself never stops, the galleries are open all day, every day! The ever-growing Gallery District has become in recent years the cultural centre of Los Cabos with many high-end fine art galleries displaying original paintings, sculpture, photography, and jewelry made by local and international contemporary artists. Among these art galleries are shops housing the works by the top folk artists and artisans of Los Cabos and Mexico.

In Mexico we love the encounter of the bohemian spirit, usually accompanied by food and drinks, in an enchanted space that reminds us we are friends to each other. After a day of good work, it is the Mexican way to take rest, and sing a song. El arte es vida. * 15

ART & CULTURE

DESTINO PUZZLES By Adrienne Davis In Mexico, it has only been in recent years that Halloween has been celebrated, as the more traditional holiday is a beautiful one called Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead). It is a celebration of our loved ones passed, where we create incredibly intricate altars in memory of our precious family and friends who have passed on to the other side. This spiritual celebration brings families together, where they join at their loved one’s resting place in the cemetery – the families bring offerings of food and beverage, precious objects, and traditional artifacts such as decorated sugar skulls and clay bowls; the favorite foods and photos of the deceased; flowers and candles; religious artifacts, prayers, blessings, and incense; a special and traditional “pan de muerto” and more – each altar is unique in its own way based on each family’s beliefs and celebrations.

Pan de muerto (bread of the dead) is a type of sweet roll traditionally baked during the weeks leading up to the Day of the Dead. The bead is topped with pieces that resemble bones as well as a ball on the top. It is said that the bones represent the lost one and the ball on top is a tear drop to represent the sorrow. The bones are placed in a circle to represent the circle of life.

Families gather, sometimes for the entire night, by their loved one’s grave to share food and drinks, play music, and recount stories of their beloved. As a child growing up in Mexico, we celebrated Dia de Los Muertos every year at school, where we were taught the importance of this holiday. Each class would build a beautiful altar, where we were invited to bring photos of any of our departed family or friends and offerings to honor the altar. We would build the altars around the school courtyard for viewing, but also as a fun way to learn about the traditions – to see who could build the most traditional and most creative altar. The celebration is not only to honor the departed, but also to call forth their spirits to visit those left behind. The food and drink offerings are meant to entice the spirits, and the music, flowers, incense, and stories to please them and bring them joy. 16

A typical altar in family members place the favorite items of their deceased loved ones.

The Cempasúchil (sem-pah-soo-cheel) flower is used as a decoration in the Day of the Dead festivities. Its warm and bright color brings life to the commemorative ofrendas (altars)

Enjoy the internationally

known ART WALK, the "crown jewel” of the Gallery District in San Jose del Cabo every Thursday evening from 5:00 - 9:00 pm. Make it a date, beginning Thursday, October 29th and throughout the year, to have a delicious bite to eat at some of the area’s top restaurants and enjoy beautiful art at Los Cabos’ best galleries, while strolling the District and enjoying lovely evening weather. The Gallery District is tucked away behind San Jose del Cabo’s historic main square (zocalo) and church, and it is full of colorful galleries and interesting shops and cafes. In recent years, the Art District has become the cultural center of Los Cabos. The many highend art galleries display works in many mediums -- paintings, sculpture, and photography -- by local, national and international artists. It is the result of the collaboration of more than 14 major galleries found in the area, each a member of the art association. Thursday evening at The Art Walk is definitely one of the best artistic experiences available in Los Cabos, and it is not to be missed! Yet there are several other artistic opportunities if you cannot make it to the Art Walk: galleries in Cabo San Lucas, a possible art walk every Friday in La Playita (organized by Francois Paris) and plenty of great art in Todos Santos! 18

AMBER GALLERY features beautiful amber jewelry, sculptures, perfume bottles and rare insect and plant fossils in amber made by designer Ron Sanford, as well as other items from Chiapas. They specialize in rare Chiapas red amber. The Gallery also features photographs by internationally-acclaimed Bruce Herman. CASA DAHLIA GALLERY features some of Baja’s top contemporary artists, ranging from native folk art, mixed media, fusion and abstract landscapes. Abstract artist Leah Porter opened the Gallery in 2006, and her paintings are described as meditative in nature and expressive in color, often representing a minimal landscape. Other artists may include Lisa Joyce-Hill, Fernando Tames, Patricia Larsen, Luis Espiridion, Sondra Richardson, and Karla Freeman. GALERIA CORSICA has three galleries in Puerto Vallarta and one in San Jose del Cabo. The Galeria Corsica team is made up of people from diverse origins who share a passion for art and a desire to make it accessible to everyone. This Galleria displays museum-quality fine art made by internationallyrenowned Mexican masters and promising young talents, and with more than 50 artists represented, it is a favorite among collectors. DESERTICA ART GALLERY has galleries in both San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas. They feature paintings, wood sculptures and furniture, paper artwork, pottery and many unique pieces. EL ARMARIO Folk Art and Coffee Patio is known as “the cutest shop in town,” and it lives up to its reputation. Owner Cynthia Castro displays unique selections of Mexican Folk Art from every region of the country. Plus, it is a great place to sit down outside for a cappuccino or a smoothie if you're tired of walking. Another fun stop is the darling cafe, LE PETITE MASALA. Try their delicious Indian samosas with a mint, mango or Salty Lassie. The mint is a personal favorite! And just across the street is the Flora’s Farm outlet, where you can find fresh veggies, or perhaps a gift of handmade soap in all your favorite scents. FRANK ARNOLD GALLERY is the working studio of international abstract painter and sculptor Frank Arnold. “Like de Kooning, Gorky, or Hans Hofmann, Frank Arnold paints from his gut.” – Glen Starkey, New Times, San Luis Obispo, CA. The artist's website describes his paintings and sculptures as "personal, yet universal." He works in oil on canvas and cast bronze.

GALERIA IDA VICTORIA is not to be missed. Owner/Artist Ida Gustavson has a degree in Illustration from Parsons School of Design, and her husband Pete Signorelli is the designer in charge of the Custom Frame Studio. The two have created a friendly space, featuring the artwork of 25 established as well as emerging contemporary artists from the US, Mexico and Canada, a colorful eclectic collection of original art and sculpture, always selected with humor and a vibrant twist." You might find yourself lucky enough to be there while the gallery sponsors a local event. IVAN GUADERRAMA ART GALLERY was established in 2004 by the founder of the same name in its original location of Chihuahua, Mexico. The gallery has grown, and now San Jose del Cabo houses its art work, a variety of styles and genres specializing in contemporary Christian art work. LA SACRISTIA ART & HISTORY is a charming gallery where you can find the best of Mexican art, folk art and crafts, sculptures, silvery jewelry, pottery -- such as black pottery from Oaxaca and alebrijes. This gallery is fun, fanciful, and not to be missed! MATA ORTIZ POTTERY GALLERY is a personal favorite. They feature exquisite beautiful pottery, which is a recreation of the pre-Hispanic pottery found at the archeological site of Paquime in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. The pottery is named after the modern town of Mata Ortiz, where a man named Juan Quezada Celado began this tradition of recreating the ancient pottery. The Mata Ortiz potters are artists in the very best sense of the word, and you must visit to appreciate these works of art! MOVIMIENTO ART GALLERY features both residential and corporate art and seems to specialize in modern paintings. MUVEZI FINE AFRICAN ART is a beautiful gallery featuring gorgeous African sculptures. I first saw these sculptures while visiting the northern part of South Africa, so when I discovered them in our back yard in San Jose del Cabo, I was very excited! Muvezi Gallery features Shona Artists from Zimbabwe, recognized as some of the world’s finest stone sculptors! In addition to traditional African styles, the Shona artists produce amazing abstract and modern pieces. Another wonderful thing about investing in Muvezi Art is that 10% of the selling price is donated to the Muvezi Health Project, with Muvesi matching another 10%, for a total donation of 20%. This is sent to Africa as “Love” (a silver product that prevents and treats malaria) and is distributed within mission hospitals. Each $10 sent to Africa will effectively treat malaria for one individual. Beautiful art, beautiful donation! We continue our Art Walk with OLD TOWN GALLERY, featuring eight renowned artists: Alan Wylie, Brent Heighton, Cheryl Tuck Tallon, Denyse Klette, John Einerssen, Mike Svob, George Scholl and Richard McDiarmid all producing many lovely Mexican scenes on canvas. PATRICIA MENDOZA ART GALLERY has goals of reaching out beyond the walls to make art available for everybody. Founded in 2008, Patricia Mendoza has created an art gallery for Mexican artists, to further expand the country’s unique expressions and visions. *

Photographer

The Cultural Circuit, organized by Solomon's Landing Restaurant owner Brian Solomon, takes place every Saturday afternoon. Booths featuring art exhibits, workshops, and music stages can be found arranged along the Marina behind the Tesoro/Wyndham Hotel. While a greater part of the Cultural Circuit showcases paintings and sculptures of local artists, the Circuit also offers free wine and tequila tastings, cultural workshops, live music, folkloric dancing and, of course, fine food at some of the city’s signature Marina dining spots. The aim of the Cultural Circuit is to give to the local community the opportunity to have a forum of culture in all its expressions, and provide a safe place that is symbolic of Family on our Cabo San Lucas Marina. The weekly event presents a special focus on local culture where tourists and the local community can experience the cultural heritage of the area to give a broader vision of the town's roots and customs, showing that our destination is represented by other attractions other that bars, restaurants, golfing or fishing. This project was an interest of some entrepreneurs to promote the culture of Southern Baja and to return the Marina area to a family recreation area. After isolated efforts, these entrepreneurs; which include Brian Solomon, Adrian Luna and Clicerio Mercado, in an informal discussion revived the idea described above. These talks incorporated various individuals and institutions, Héctor Montaño, Director of API, Blanca Hernández Castro Professor of Department of Culture, the Professor Armida Castro Economic Development, Mr. Brian Solomon in representation of Canirac (Chamber of the Restaurant Industry) and Administration Plaza Marina, Lic. Diana Garza and Sr. José Luis Salinas, Manager of Hotel Wyndham.

SPOTLIGHTS

Bernardo was born in Tijuana, Mexico, but was raised in Los Cabos. He's been fortunate enough to live in Paris, and Melbourne, and it was during those years that he picked up a camera. He's been fortunate enough to work for One & Only Palmilla, and most recently Flora Farms, two of the most exclusive sites in Los Cabos. Bernardo is currently focused on weddings, corporate, social events, and food photography. He likes to describe his photography as story-driven. "I always talk about the importance of telling a story. I believe a photograph can say a lot by itself, but then imagine what a hundred could do. Whether it is a wedding or a product shoot, I want the viewer to be able to see a story line. This creates a sense of involvement, which gives the viewer a better feel of the whole event." Another very important part of the way he likes to document moments is with details. Tiny things are essential to achieve great memories. As a photographer you are hired because of your ability to see differently, and clients always appreciate you seeing things they didn’t.

Todos Santos is an inspirational mecca for artists and aficionados of all flavors of art. It is a dreamland for dreamers and with the Tropic of Cancer crossing through this little Pueblo Magico, the dreams feel more intense, the images are more powerful. This is a welcome place to get artistically weird. Art here is a medium for self expression, but it also serves as a tool to influence the minds about social issues or as a healing force. If art and film were a meal in Todos Santos, it would be a super burro combo: the culture, the geography, the bohemian charisma, the lingering light, the fresh air, the raw undeveloped earth, the ocean; garnished with the canopy of green palms—all wrapped up in the same burrito. Just being here is inspiring! Just ask Dennis McGhee, who has sourced and now painted over 365 cow skulls with outstanding creativity and colors. And it isn't a stretch to find oneself lost in an Ezra Katz painting, where the palm trees are swaying and one can almost smell the dirt being kicked up by the tires of a '67 Ford Bronco as it meanders down a dusty road. Or experience the fun of trying to name all the famous faces found in an N.E Hayles poster of influential people. The roads are peppered with art galleries. We even have a Teatro de Cine on our plaza. The calendar is populated with the Art Festival, the Music Festival and the weekly art walk and Open Studios Event, where more than 30 galleries are open to the public. Kate Turning managed to hit the ball out of the park last year for the Film Festival and the leitmotiv of Woman and Film and the Environment. She painted a striking image of a beautiful woman elegantly dressed, armed with a video camera in the stunning nature of Baja.

It begins January 15 and runs for two consecutive weekends, ending January 23, 2016. We hope to see you here! *

HEALTHY LIVING

yo ga - organic - eco - f itnes s and head roll forward, stressing and straining muscles of the upper back and neck. There are a variety of things you can do to help yourself. It’s always better to be proactive rather than reactive when it comes to the body. Here is what you can do to keep your body right when traveling.

Life is transient. Be happy. Imagination and creativity are essential elements to a healthy, artful expression of life. What I create and what I imagine will shape the world around me. The Mayans, an ancient Mexican culture, succeeded in conquering their lower chakras' impulses, evolved to experience an enlightened education in cosmic science, and understood art as the combination of time and energy. They saw only cosmic potential in everyone. Their transcendent In’Lakesh art philosophy reminds new generations that “you are I, and I am you," and inspires only the highest human qualities in synchronicity with universal natural laws, honoring Nature. Today, the qualities that make a work of art transcend are as mysterious as the Popol Vuh, the Mayan book of creation; they are as mysterious as the Bible, the Quran, the I Ching, the Torah, or the Bhagavad-Gita. The wise see life itself as a work of art, and pay attention only to the highest values of the art of living, then they create books, theater, dance, movies, sculptures, paintings, songs, food, entire cultures. All spiritual practices throughout all time agree that peace of mind and harmonious living are at the core of real happiness. I am the artist, what I create and what I imagine will shape the world around me. May we all inspire real peace, real harmony, real happiness. Baja living is healthy living.

FITNESS Travel

by Kevin McCaleb / Chiropractor Traveling can be a very stressful time for many of us, even if you’re traveling for vacation. Going somewhere new and away from one’s comfort zone can bring a certain level of anxiety, and anxiety affects our mental state in negative ways. When we live unaware, travel can also create some detrimental effects on our physical body, as well. Extended travel times, lugging heavy bags, and sleeping in subpar beds are just a few of the physical pitfalls one may encounter. Traveling (whether by land, sea, or air) often requires periods of prolonged sitting. Our bodies are not designed to be kept in a seated position for long stretches of time. Undoubtedly, the body begins to fatigue. The shoulders

Kevin’s Travel Tips: • Start right away. If you’re on a flight, get up as soon as the seat belt sign goes off. Walk the aisle a bit. Try to do this every 35-45 minutes. • Find a pool. Swimming is one of the best motion exercises/stretches you can do. Not just for the back, but the entire body. • Roll it. Most all luggage bags today come with wheels. Try to avoid carrying heavy bags with your arms or shoulders. • Stretch it. There are a plethora of stretches available to isolate the psoas muscle. Simply go onto youtube and do a search to find 2 or 3 that you prefer. Then do them when you wake up every morning. • Treat yourself. Whatever you’re into, massage, chiropractic, yoga, pilates, acupuncture, dance, rolfing, meditation, find one and utilize it. Your body will thank you for it.

ECO-Friendly Contemporary films such, as Cowspiracy, executive produced by Leonardo Di Caprio, make a well-researched statement about the importance of sustainability practices not only in social, political, and economical systems, but in our daily living habits. In this film, Demosthenes Marathos from The Sustainability Institute states, “Quietly and unmistakably, the most powerful thing someone can do for the environment -- no other lifestyle choice has more reach and positive impact on the planet and all life on earth -- than to stop consuming animals and living a vegan lifestyle.” Surprised? If you consider yourself environmentally aware, you must watch this film. “You are the thought leaders, you are the change agents, you are the decision makers. Join the global movement,” says Oscar winner Jared Leto in his EMA video environmental campaign for #ActInParis2015. The intention was to positively influence the 2015 Paris Climate Summit, where important decisions are discussed regarding planet wellness.

Regardless of where you are in the world, leading green film programs advise us to identify ways to “walk the talk,” and to integrate sustainability across our span of businesses in front of the camera as well as behind it. Whether identifying opportunities for energy savings and innovation in production and distribution, educating our consumers via environmentally-themed films, reducing the carbon footprint of our productions, or activating and engaging our workforce with sustainable practices, we must mobilize our assets to protect the planet.

The Tao of Snack Box

by Isabelle Gagnon / Health Coach and Lifestyle Educator The annual Los Cabos Film Festival is on this month, along with many other exciting activities. Our frantically busy work-home lives, filled with many events, often make us feel like there’s no time for healthy eating. And when you do stop to eat, it’s probably tempting to go the quick and easy route by grabbing a burger and fries, tacos on the street, or potato chips and candy. But it is possible to treat yourself to a healthy snack. In fact, if you have a hectic schedule, it’s even more important to eat healthy foods that give you the fuel you need to keep going. Here is one more good reason why you want to eat every 3 – 4 hours; It is a fact that most people only eat 2-3 big meals per day. They go six, seven, sometimes, eight hours without food. When you don’t eat for a while your blood sugar really drops. When the blood sugar drops, what do we crave? Sugar of course…all the stuff we don’t want to binge on, but reach for when that happens. And then when you eat after six hours or so, there is a negative “domino effect”: your blood sugar spikes, which causes excess insulin in your blood resulting in increased fat storage. GET YOURSELF A SNACK BOX! One of those insulated lunch boxes with an ice pack and fill it up with all the goodness you should eat to function optimally. Here are some “cool” ideas: • Small natural Yogurt with a side of seeds and cut up fruits you will “add and stir” when ready to eat • A chia pudding.** • A breakfast quinoa cup.** • Cut up apple with 1 table spoon of almond butter to dip in, or a pear with a piece of fresh cheese. • Cut up jicama and cucumber with ½ cup of hummus. • Hard-boiled egg with a few olives and cherry tomatoes. • A turkey, sprouts, tomato, cucumber, lettuce sandwich on multi-grain bread. • And last, “Never leave home without it!” **Recipe links: www.eatlivelife.com

IMAGINE you live here:

HOW

ARE YOU? by Blake Harrington

You love Baja. You love Cabo. You understand and recognize how special this region of the world is! So here’s the question for you frequent visitors and residents, how “Cabo” are you?! How many of these activities can you check off the list? Ready, Set, GO! WALK UNDER “EL ARCO”

When the tide is low enough, you can walk through the center of the Arch. This phenomenon happens only every 4-5 years. Although you’ll see many pictures in magazines with people under the arch, it’s actually not very common!

Did you know? – After the September 2014 Hurricane Odile, divers uncovered “The Lundenberg”, a shipwreck dating back to 1954 at the sea floor near The Arch. SEE SAMMY HAGAR LIVE AT CABO WABO

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and former front man of Van Halen, Sammy Hagar opened his Cabo Wabo Cantina in 1990 when Cabo was mostly dirt roads traveled on by ATV. Each October, Sammy does a run of live shows for his annual Birthday Bash and invites musicians and celebrities from around the world. You never know who’s going to walk onto the stage!

Did you know? – Cabo Wabo also has other locations in Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, and Los Angeles.

VISIT ESPIRITU SANTO ISLANDS (LA PAZ) Secluded beaches and abundant underwater wildlife await you as you explore stunning coves of natural beauty. The area is protected as a natural reserve and it was declared part of a Biosphere Reserve by the UNESCO in 1995. Both islands are uninhabited.

Did you know? – Ensenada Grande beach, on Isla Partida, was voted the most beautiful beach in Mexico by The Travel Magazine and one of the top 12 beaches in the world. 24

WHALE WATCHING

See a Whale Breach Each year between December and April, Cabo welcomes the Grey Whale and Humpback Whale as they make their journey from Alaska up to the breeding grounds in the Sea of Cortez to birth their babies. To experience these beautiful creatures up close and personal you can take one of the many whale-watching tours available on a variety of boats, even as simple as a panga.

Did you know? – Humpback whales can reach up to 16 meters long, and weigh up to 80,000 lbs?

BABY TURTLE RELEASE, OR SEE A MOTHER TURTLE LAY HER EGGS

From June through January, Olive Ridleys and Leatherbacks, two of the more common species of Sea Turtles in the area, lay their eggs in the sand just above the tide. From here, the eggs incubate in their nest for about 2 months. Then, the baby turtles climb out and make the daunting trip to the water.

Did you know? – You can help the turtles! There are opportunities to help release these baby turtles into the ocean through local tour companies and conservancies. DRIVE THE ENTIRE EAST CAPE

Get in your truck or jeep, or rent one, and drive east! With miles and miles of unspoiled beach, great surf breaks, and fantastic snorkeling, the East Cape and its rugged dirt roads and stunning vistas awaits you. Find great surf from Shipwrecks, to La Fortuna, to 9 Palms, and more. For the campers, set up anywhere and be at peace with the Sea of Cortez as your front yard.

Did you know? – Tourism in the east cape began in 1952 when The Rancho Buena Vista Hotel opened as a fly fishing resort, attracting many visitors, including many A-list Hollywood celebrities. CATCH (AND RELEASE) A MARLIN

Nothing may be more thrilling than catching, and releasing a Marlin off the tip of the Baja. The battle between man and fish is one that can be lengthy and exhausting, but truly rewarding.

Did you know? – The well-known “Bisbee Black & Blue” fishing tournament has been held since 1981. In 2006, it was their biggest year of entries and participants which subsequently lead to a world-record payout of over $4,000,000 US dollars and remains the biggest payout in sport fishing history.

SANTIAGO WATERFALLS AND HOT SPRINGS

Santiago Water FallsPack your car with sandwiches, snacks, and drinks and have a picnic at the base of the Sierra de la Laguna mountain range. Just 30 minutes north of the airport is one of Baja’s many natural wonders, Canon de la Zorra and Cascada sol de Mayo are waterfalls and hot-springs in the small ranchero town of Santiago. You can also hike up non-marked trails to more pools and waterfalls.

Did you know? – The Mexican Federal Government has marked these areas as a reserve dedicated to protecting the environment. SWIM WITH THE WHALE SHARKS (LA PAZ) One of the most exhilarating experiences you’ll have in your lifetime is to swim the Whale Sharks, the largest fish in the ocean. Tours to swim with these peaceful giants in La Paz can be done each winter, and it’s truly a unique experience.

Did you know? – With a lifespan of around 70 years, the Whale Shark has been in existence for nearly 60 million years. DRIVE DOWN THE BAJA FROM SAN DIEGO TO CABO

DriveBajaIf you’ve done it once, you’ll do it again. The drive takes 2 to 3 days, but why rush? As you zig-zag across the Baja terrain, eventually you are spit out at Muluge, a natural oasis, and greeted by the turquoise blue water of the Sea of Cortez, which you will drive along for most of the remaining trek south.

Did you know? – The Baja is the world’s longest peninsula, reaching 806 miles in length. The highway that runs from Tijuana to Los Cabos zig-zags a big mountain range, and is roughly 1045 miles long.

NOVEMBER 2015

Day of the Dead

Saturday, Sunday November 1 & 2

The two first days and nights of November could easily be referred to as "Mexico's Halloween," commonly recognized by painted skulls, which symbolize its importance to the history of death and tradition of Mexican culture. Throughout most of the Republic of Mexico, November 1 is a day set aside to honor children and infants, Día de los Inocentes and Día de los Angelitos, while deceased adults are honored on November 2, Día de los Muertos. During these 2 - 4 days of festivities, Mexicans go to cemeteries, building private altars containing photos, foods and memorabilia of the dearly departed. Relatives will often clean and decorate the gravesites with offerings, which include orange Mexican marigolds called cempasúchil. The Department of Culture (Departamento de Cultura) in San Jose del Cabo first organized and incorporated an Altar Contest in 2009, and an artistic festival for the Day of the Dead in San Jose's main square. Halloween weekend, as everyone considers it now, is filled with costume contest events in San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, complete with fun drink specials. Some of the more popular establishments, like Mandala, Baja Junkie and Squid Roe, have something planned for the holiday year after year.

Western Outdoor News Tuna Jackpot Tournament November 5-8

The Yamaha and Western Outdoor News-sponsored Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot will take place November 5 - 8, with many sports fishing tournament activities breathing post-hurricane life into the Puerto Paraiso Mall/ Marina area of San Lucas for three days. Anglers will be fishing to win any of the $150,000 in prizes and $570,000 US in cash. Tournament Director Pat McDonell's claim that the 16th-annual WON/Yamaha Los Cabos Tuna Jackpot is the largest and richest tuna tournament in the world was supported by the early-October catch of a 331-pound yellowfin, caught at the Gordo Bank. For more information please visit www.loscabostunajackpot.com.

Baja International Film Festival November 11-15

The Baja International Film Festival returns for its 4th year to Cabo San Lucas after a move from San Jose del Cabo's Convention Center to the Cabo San Lucas Cultural Pavilion last fall. The event will once again feature films from the United States, Mexico and Canada. The 2015 Baja International Film Festival is proud to announce Steve Jobs for its fourth edition closing night, the most recent and acclaimed film of the British director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, Trainspotting, 127 Hours). The 28

event s - live music - nightlife - dining

Mexican premier will take place November 14 as part of the Festival’s 2015 Galas Program. The film stars Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds). Diamonds International Los Cabos has decided to commemorate its precious jewels by holding the first ''Capture the Sparkle of Los Cabos'' photography contest. This event has been added to the film festival's newest category, in which a panel will choose 4 finalists from the many entrants to exclusively photograph pieces of Diamonds International jewelry at exotic locations that typify magical Cabo. The finalists will exhibit and showcase their work at the gala event to be held at the Cultural Pavilion as part of the 4th Annual Baja International Film Festival.

SCORE Baja 1,000 November 17-21

One of the longest, most storied events in the Baja is the off-road SCORE Baja 1000 race. This event is celebrating its 46th annual all-terrain endurance run from Ensenada to La Paz. As it has for over four decades, SCORE has put together another memorable race course, this one a loop race, with all of the foreboding, unforgiving terrain the northern state of the majestic Baja California peninsula has to offer. Beginning and ending in the heart of Ensenada in front of the historic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center, the course travels in a counter-clockwise direction. It includes an approximately 35-mile stretch to Ojos Negros which is used in both directions. Outgoing, the course heads south from Ojos through Santo Tomas and along the Pacific Ocean. The approximately 840-mile course features seven checkpoints and covers both sides of the peninsula. The course parallels Highway 1 for nearly half of the race, looping south back to the Pacific and then crossing over to the other side of the peninsula below Puertocitos. The course then heads back north along the Sea of Cortez past San Felipe, parallel to Highway 5 and up to the junction with Highway 3. The rugged course then parallels Highway 3, traveling west, then northwest back into Ojos Negros and the finish line in Ensenada. Pre-running is expected to open near the end of October, allowing competitors nearly three weeks of practice time on the course. For more information, please visit www.score-baja-1000.com.

Revolution Day

Thursday, November 20

November 20 is recognized as a national holiday in Mexico, with the traditional closing of banks and government offices. The Mexican Revolution of 1910, in which the poorest of people rose up and took arms against the 34-year reign of corruption and subjugation under the rule of Dictator/President Porfirio Diaz, who was in power from 1876 to 1910. Francisco I. Madero, Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata are the three most famous figures associated with Mexican history as the core group of men who went on to launch the ultimate rebellion against Díaz. This armed conflict is often categorized as

the most important socio-political event in the country of Mexico. The end result was the Mexican Constitution of 1917, at the expense of over one million lives during the ten year conflict. In both San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, the day is filled with parades and rodeos to commemorate the Mexican Revolution.

These are sold in bundles priced anywhere from $10 - 30 pesos, which is roughly $1 - $3 US dollars. There are also local artisans selling hand-crafted sweaters, scarves and clothing better suited for cooler temperatures than the warm, humid weather of Cabo San Lucas. Musical entertainment keeps the festive atmosphere thriving, while visiting shoppers taste-test and choose the healthy foods of their preference, including sweet homemade pastries and delicious handmade ice cream.
