We have dedicated this issue to eco-adventures and outdoor activities so you can learn what this area's natural richness has to offer. Nationally protected biosphere reserves such as the Sierra de la Laguna and the eight-fingered coral reef in Cabo Pulmo, are only a few examples of the options that you can explore in Los Cabos. Read further to discover these hidden places such as our natural hot springs, majestic waterfalls, ideal kite surfing conditions and more. The 5th annual Todos Santos Music Festival will take place mid month. I can't think of a better scenario to visit this Pueblo Mágico! Over on the Sea of Cortez side, the Lord of the Wind Tournament will "blow you away" with the numerous talented kite surfers that will be competing during five days. I recommend attending this event if you want to get the local feel of Los Barriles and the East Cape. Los Cabos (the capes) is located in the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of four main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape. La Paz is the Capital of the state, however, technically it is not part of the municipality of Los Cabos. If you take a look at the Baja Sur map you can see that the highways and towns form a loop. The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet at the very tip of the peninsula. It's very clear when you're on the Pacific side; the waves are much larger and powerful and the winds are stronger. If you go further north along the Pacific side the climate and beaches are very different than on the Sea of Cortez. It's usually a few degrees cooler, which is very pleasant during the warm summer months. In the Pescadero and Todos Santos area, the sand is dark and fine and the color of the water is deep blue. The sand in Sea of Cortez beaches is coarser and the water is a lighter tone of blue. The beaches in La Paz and the surrounding areas are possibly the most beautiful ones in Baja Sur. The white powdery sand and the waist-high water create a spectacular shade of turquoise, the kind you see in postcards. The mountains meet the desert, the desert meets the ocean. The Sierra de la Laguna is a mountain range that lies at the southern end of the peninsula. Above 800 meters in elevation dry forests transition to pine-oak forests. The main climate of the region is arid to semi-arid, however, there are very fertile areas where local farmers grow a variety of fruits and vegetables, especially on the Pacific side. The aquarium of the world. These are the words that Jacques Cousteau used to describe the Sea of Cortez. It is said that eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of varieties of fish and mammals found their way into this “trap” and either stayed in its warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool bottom of the two mile-deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. In the months of January through March, Gray whales make their yearly migration from Alaska to give birth to their young in the shallow and warm waters of the Sea of Cortez. 4

Cabo San Lucas
This tourist friendly town, also just known as “Cabo,” is located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula and is full of entertainment for every age and liking. The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet at Land’s End, where you can observe the beautiful rock formations and the famous Cabo arch. In Cabo San Lucas you can find Medano Beach, the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area, an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night.
San José del Cabo
Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district as well as world-class restaurants. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride to explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.
The Corridor
The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 20 minute drive). Along this road you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, championship golf courses and beautiful views. Have your camera ready and make a roadside stop at the Costa Azul view-point for photo opportunities and a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut).
Todos Santos
Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José due to the breezes coming from the Pacific.
East Cape
People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, an eight fingered coral reef that offers outstanding snorkelling and scuba diving and turtle nesting on the beach. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and folks who just want to get away from it all.
La Paz
La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waist high water at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer.
Loreto
Loreto offers the best of both worlds for tourists who long to escape to an 'authentic-Mexico' with settings that take you back-in-time along with ocean activities that rival that of any other modern coastal city. In Loreto you'll find historic buildings such as the enchanting Mision de Loreto - a mission-style church that was built in 1697 as well as The Islands of Loreto which boasts Mexico's largest marine preserve where dolphins, seals, turtles and sea lions all play in the sea. For those who are partial to adventures on land; there is hiking, biking, and nature-tours that fill up a camera with pictures of radiant natural settings. Loreto is the perfect place for everyone from honeymooners to large families.

Exchange rates - Dollars are accepted almost everywhere and you will get your change in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate.
Cash or Card? - Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted, but you often run into cash only places. Always ask beforehand and carry cash. Your bank will most likely charge you international transaction fees if you pay with your card.
ATMs - The easiest way to get pesos is to simply withdraw money from an ATM in Los Cabos. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate (best possible rate). Examples include Banorte, Bancomer, Santander, Banamex, and HSBC. Non-bank ATMs located in the street will charge higher fees. Some ATMs only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing and try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high fees.
Driving - Renting a car will allow you to enjoy the freedom of exploring Los Cabos. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there is some organization within the chaos. If you are pulled over by local police for committing a driving infraction, the standard procedure is for them to take your Driver’s License. You will then have to go to the Police Station to pay your ticket and pick-up your license. There are two types of gasoline: Magna, which is regular, and Premium. Lleno (pronounced yeno) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos is customary. ALTO STOP

Buying groceries - In Cabo San Lucas, Wal-Mart and Costco are good options and easy to get to. You can always find a taxi outside of these stores. San José has a Wal-Mart and Mega. If you just need to grab something quickly, OXXO stores are small, reasonably priced convenient stores located all over town.

BAJA 101 make an effort to arrive early; snorkelling visibility is often better in the mornings, you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours and, if you beat the crowds, you’ll be guaranteed a palapa to yourself for much-needed shade. Bring snorkelling gear!
Must-see beaches in Los Cabos
Cabo San Lucas MEDANO BEACH If you’re looking for the action, here it is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2-mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars, right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and familyfriendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. Numerous activities and water sports are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the best spot to do it. Its stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see. Location: In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. The beach is accessible by foot through the east side of the marina or via Avenida del Pescador. Tips: Be prepared to be approached by souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “No, gracias.” Prices don’t vary much from one water sports rental place to another. Visit Lover’s Beach while you’re there. LOVER’S BEACH Getting there is an adventure in itself, due to the fact that it is reachable only by boat or kayak. The easiest way is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Prices are around $15.00 USD per person. Ask your captain to cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Once you arrive, 6

SANTA MARIA Santa Maria offers a stunning horseshoe cove with coarse coral-colored sand and abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkelling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family-friendly beach is relatively secluded; therefore, you rarely run into beach vendors. Location: Travelling west from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the sign which reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. Tips: Santa Maria has brand new palapas and a wooden walkway. Swim from the shore towards the rocks on the right side of the beach for a great snorkeling experience.
San Jose del Cabo
you’ll notice the striking rock formations and caves. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean; the locals call this Divorce Beach. This side is very dangerous for swimming because of the powerful undertow, so swim on Lover’s Beach only. Location: Land’s End beside the famous arch. This beach is accessible only by boat. Tips: There are a couple of vendors who offer beer and water, but you won’t find any other services. A good idea is to spend the day at Medano Beach and take an hour or two to go to Lover’s Beach; this should be time enough to explore this natural wonderland.
Along the Corridor CHILENO
Chileno is a very popular location for snorkelling, swimming or just spending the day under the newly-installed palapas. You’ll find tide pools at the east end of the beach and beautiful reefs offering excellent snorkelling and scuba diving. This is the only beach with public restrooms and it has plenty of palapas for shade. Location: Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near Km. 14 of the main highway. Tips: If you visit Chileno on a weekend,
PALMILLA Palmilla beach is known for its family-friendly calm waters and a mile-long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes, the One&Only Hotel and the world renowned Jack Nicklaus Ocean Nine golf course. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter, but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis. Location: Take the Palmilla ramp exit at Km. 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel. Tips: Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa, or bring your own umbrella. No services are available here. COSTA AZUL If what you’re looking for is a good surf spot you can find it here without driving out of town. Head over to Zipper’s for a surf session and lunch and beers at the restaurant. To the west of Zippers is Acapulquito beach where the Cabo Surf Hotel and
Mike Doyle Surf School are located. You can find surf shops in the area where you can rent surf and stand-up paddle boards and set up lessons. The surf is bigger during the summer, and in the winter this is a good spot for snorkelling and swimming. Location: Exit into the arroyo at Km. 28 via the Costa Azul Bridge. Tips: Swimming with caution is possible in this area but keep an eye out for surfers. LA PLAYITA La Playita (the little beach) is a long stretch of beach where you will often find locals fishing from the shore and families with children enjoying the beach-front playground. On the right end of La Playita you can find a roped-off swimming area just outside the entrance to the beautiful Puerto Los Cabos 500slip marina. To the left is the natural open beach where you can swim, skim-board and enjoy a peaceful beach day away from the crowds. Location: Follow the signs to La Playita/Puerto Los Cabos from Boulevard Mijares in downtown San José del Cabo (across from the fire department). Tips: You will find new and wellmaintained bathrooms, palapas and fishing charters. There are no food services directly on the beach, but several casual restaurants in the surrounding area.
Pacific Side
CERRITOS Cerritos beach is a popular surf spot and swimming here is relatively safe. The scenic 45-minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant is a perfect spot to spend a relaxing day, maybe even get a massage on the beach. If you want to be active, you can take a surf lesson at Baja Surf Camp or rent surf and boogie boards at the Costa Azul Surf Shop. Location: Exit at Km. 66 of the Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos Highway. Watch the markers and look for the signs. Drive about 1.7 miles to the beach area. Tips: Lounge chairs, restrooms, food and drinks are available at The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant. The ocean currents are strong and the waves can be quite powerful on a big day, so swim with caution.

With calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather, some may argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa María Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, there are endless options to fit your needs.
FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate, no matter what your level of fishing experience is. What to Expect Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment.

Some also include food and drink or these amenities can be added at an additional cost. It is better to leave early; trips usually begin at 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. It is customary to leave the crew a gratuity of 15% to 20%. Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait, you may buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire may also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are several charter companies that can accommodate your needs. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour of the landmark arch, a few hours of fishing, and a cruise to one of our beautiful bays for a swim. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the biggest difference between a yacht and a fishing boat rental is the cost. Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers, pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option. Cruisers accommodate larger groups and are more comfortable when the sea is rough on a windy day. THE MARINAS Marina Cabo San Lucas, the area’s largest commercial marina, features 380 slips and accommodates vessels of up to 375 feet. Amenities include 24-hour security, electricity and potable water, a fuel dock, and convenient laundry and shower facilities. Puerto Los Cabos, located in La Playita just north of San José del Cabo, is the new10

SPORT FISHING FLAGS COMMONLY SEEN IN LOS CABOS
So what do all those different colored flags fluttering from the outriggers on sportfishing boats signify? The dark blue flags signify that a billfish was caught on the last trip. It could be a blue, black or striped marlin or a sailfish. Currently striped marlin are the most common one. If there is a red flag beneath any colored flag, it means the fish was released. Yellow or gold flags are reserved for dorado or mahi mahi which happen to be that color. They have finally begun to bite after dismal fall season. Big boats, pangas, inshore or offshore or even from shore. Chances are some will be seen or caught this month and more than a few of these will end up as diner for the lucky angler. White flags mean yellowfin tuna that have been among the missing recently. Or at least spotty by almost every ones definition. An orange flag is for one of the most popular eating fish around now. Wahoo which have been around for several months. Which is much later in the year than usual. Beyond those fish, there are many others that don't have a dedicated flag but are equally fun to catch. Roosterfish, that derive their name from the distinctive dorsal fin that resembles a roosters comb are spectacular fighters that have no value as food fish and deserve to be released. Another to add to the no flag list are sierra mackerel that have a mouthful of teeth like the much larger wahoo. Their flesh is popular for many cerviche recipes that almost any restaurant worth its salt in Baja Sur can whip up and serve with crispy tortilla chips. I was told by a Pablo Armenta Gutiérrez, representative in Los Cabos Tourism Secretary of State this very day that 50% of Los Cabos visitors come to sportfish. Regardless of which category you are in the former or later. We hope enjoy your stay and have a chance to be out on the water.

SNORKELLING & SCUBA DIVING
Prepare yourself for an incredible show of nature as you swim side by side with colourful schools of fish, eels, rays, octopus, sea turtles and more. The Sea of Cortez or the “Aquarium of the World” offers many opportunities to experience incredible underwater wildlife.
SCUBA DIVING DESTINATIONS Note: travel time is from the Cabo San Lucas marina. Land’s End Intermediate-Advanced - 50’-60’ Five minutes by boat and you can share the water with sea lions and moray eels, with a sunken boat visible in the Falls. Sand Falls Beginners - Advanced - 30’-100’ Steep sand banks drop sharply into a canyon filled with tropical fish. The canyon runs from the depths of the Cabo San Lucas bay to within 30 feet of the beach. Pelican Rock Beginners - 25’-80’ This large rock attracts many tropical fish and is only five minutes from shore. Neptune’s Finger Advanced - 80’-100’ A spectacular canyon wall dive. Cabeza de Ballena Beginners - 20’-40’ A 25-minute boat ride leads to a dive through large boulders with many fish. Santa María Cave Beginners - 20’-40’ Reachable from the shore or a 35-minute boat ride, the entrance to Santa Maria canyon has a huge variety of fish which feed right from your hand. Chileno Beginners - 30’-70’ This location offers parking, sea turtle sightings, tropical fish, and night dives over a sandy and rocky bottom following a 35-minute boat ride. El Gavilán Intermediate/Advanced - 70’-100’ This rocky ledge leads into a canyon where groupers and larger fish are often sighted; 35 minutes by boat. Blow Hole Beginners/Advanced - 30’-70’ 35-minutes from San Lucas, or just 10
minutes from Chileno beach, this dive offers rocky valleys presenting a variety of fish. Las Salinas Beginners - 30’-45’ - A sunken Japanese fishing boat attracts a large assortment of fish at this beginners’ dive; about 80 minutes from Cabo San Lucas or one hour from La Playita. Gordo Banks Advanced - 110’-120’ - A seamount provides views of marlin, hammerheads, skip jacks and at times huge manta rays; one hour from La Playita. Cabo Pulmo Beginner-Advanced - 30’-100’ A one hour drive east of San José or five minutes by boat and you’ll find the only living coral reef in the Sea of Cortez. SNORKELLING SPOTS Cabo offers several methods for snorkelling. You may drive to a local beach and swim out, book a tour with one of the many popular companies, or charter a private boat. Tours are typically two or three hours. Stay away from the Pacific side of the peninsula; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports. Pelican Rock
A quick five-minute ride from the Cabo San Lucas marina or Medano Beach is all it takes to get to this fish-attracting rock.
Lover’s Beach This popular and uniquely-named beach is accessible only by boat. Be on the look-out, however, as the water is not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Bay Snorkel tours regularly visit Santa Maria Bay. If you choose to drive there, it’s an easy swim from the shore to the reef on the right side of the cove. Chileno Bay Snorkelers will find a safe, roped-off area for swimming at this common tour destination. Cabo Pulmo A Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkelling in the area. This eightfingered coral reef is about a 2-hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it!

With the desert meeting the Sea of Cortez as a backdrop, there is no doubt why Los Cabos has become a championship golf destination over the years. From Tiger Woods to Nicklaus and Fazio, many of the big names in golf have designed courses on this unique landscape. CABO REAL The newly renovated Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed golf course is one of the Corridor’s first championship courses and boasts beautiful views of the Sea of Cortez, elevation changes, and has hosted two PGA Senior Slams. 18 holes, Par 73, 7,461 yards. Baja Sur has been a popular surfing destination since the ‘50s. The East Cape is popular for kite surfing and the Pacific coast has several surf breaks where you will find less crowds. STAND UP PADDLING
There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just a paddle and a board. Stand up paddling is a great way to see marine life and to get a great workout and while enjoying nature. At Medano beach you can rent boards in several locations. Certain companies offer paddling lessons and some have yoga classes on the board. Tips! • Your feet should be parallel, about hipwidth distance apart, centred between the board rails (edges). • Keep toes pointed forward, knees bent and your back straight. Balance with your hips and core. Keep your arms straight and twist from your torso as you paddle, you have more strength in the abdominal muscles than in your arms. Your gaze should be level at the horizon and avoid staring at your feet. • If you’re paddling on the right, your right hand is lower and on the paddle shaft. Your top left hand is on the top of the grip. The elbow (angle) of the paddle faces away from you. • Plant the paddle by pushing the blade all the way under the surface, pull it back to your ankle, then out of the water. To go in a reasonably straight line, paddle about 4 or 5 strokes on one side, then switch to the other. When you switch sides, you’ll reverse hand positions. • When you fall aim yourself to the side so you don’t fall the board.

This sport is most popular in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (the north-east side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kiteboarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than in La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December. Every January the Lord of the Wind tournament takes place in La Ventana.

ADVENTURE
Los Cabos offers a number of entertainment options for adventure seekers. From guided bicycle tours to high-speed ziplines across one of the many local canyons, pick an adventure that is right for you and get out there! Buggy, Atv, Or Bike Rentals There are several local companies which offer ATVs, buggies, and other off-road vehicles for trail and beach cruising. Strap on some goggles and hop behind the wheel of one of these off-road racers for an afternoon of fast-paced fun! Vehicles include typical ATVs or enclosed rail buggies or RZR ATVs. Tours are typically three hours, and drivers must be 16 years of age with a valid drivers’ license. If pedal-powered rides are more your speed, look into renting a mountain bike, beach cruiser, or joining a guided bicycle tour of town. Just make sure to wear a helmet!
Adventure Parks There are several adventure parks and eco-adventure companies in Los Cabos where you and your kids can experience zip-lining, back-country ATV tours, a camel safari, and more. Zip-lines are appropriate for kids of 8 years and up and be prepared to hike from 5 to 15 minutes from line to line. Most companies include transportation. Ask your concierge to setup your adventure. Wet Fun Water Park Located about 20 minutes from San José, this water park has shallow pools and small slides for young children, water mushrooms, a pirate ship and a giant bucket that dumps water on the bystanders bellow. For the adrenaline seekers, several fast and large slides stand tall and mighty and offer a great view of the beautiful surrounding mountains. To get there take HWY 1 north from the San José International Airport towards La Paz and East Cape. After about 15 miles, the exit for Caudaño and the water park will be at km 66. Follow this road for a few minutes and you will find the park on your right.
Horseback Rides, Nature Walks, and Bird Watching Los Cabos (particularly San José del Cabo) offers a number of horseback excursions for all ages. Saddle up for a sunset guided beach ride, venture up a hidden canyon trail, or just sit back in the shade while experienced horse trainers give the kids lessons in horsemanship – there’s something for everyone! San José also boasts a natural estuary and nature preserve. Enjoy a peaceful, self-guided nature walk to observe some of the lushest landscape in the area. Species of flora and fauna are abundant: dozens of species of cactus, lizards, and birds can be spotted on this solitary walk, just a few minutes from downtown. Cactus-lovers may also want to check out the nearby cactus gardens Wirikuta, offering a large variety of cacti laid out in an artful outdoor setting. Parasailing, Bungee Jumping, and Ziplines Get ready to shout “Geronimo!” as you leap off a platform in one of the most extreme outings! Several local adventure-parks provide bungee jumping packages and high speed zipline canopy tours are offered in a number of local canyons. If heights over land are not right for you, try a parasailing trip and gain some altitude to enjoy beautiful views of Cabo while tethered firmly to a speedboat!
Turtle Release Every year, several species of endangered sea turtles nest in the warm sands of Los Cabos. Your family will have the opportunity to help these fragile and tiny creatures make it safely into the sea. Children will learn about the importance of conservation and they will surely enjoy the experience of helping these little friends. Sol de Mayo Waterfall Cascade Located about an hour and a half away from Los Cabos, the Sol de Mayo Oasis is yet another natural beauty of the Southern Baja California region, and the best time to visit is the month of November, after the September and October rains. The hike leads the adventurous to a majestically beautiful oasis where everyone can swim and even dive into the cool, serene waters. Be sure to pack a lunch, and take plenty of water. There are plenty of signs to guide everyone to this wonderful piece of paradise. After arriving in Santiago, turn right up the little hill towards the town square. The cost is $6 US per person to access the easy hike to the clear-water falls. Humane Society Visit Give your family the opportunity to give back as a dog walker or as a cat petting volunteer at the Los Cabos Humane Society or El Ranchito in San Jose. whale travels a distance that is equivalent to going to the moon and back! Some travel
a round-trip of between 16,00020,000 km (10,00012,400 miles) every year between their winter calving lagoons in the warm waters of Mexico and their summer feeding grounds in the cold Arctic seas. The desert is green and full of life. From both the land and the sea one can find all sorts of interesting creatures to fill a nature lover’s time. Birdwatchers and fisherman alike have reported lots of activity around Los Cabos, with many of the humpback whales arriving 1 to 1.5 months ahead of schedule. It looks to be another eventful whale watching season here in Cabo with some 5,000 to 10,000 whales calling our waters home for the winter. The activity levels in January tend to be high as the bulk of whales finally reach the Sea of Cortez. The new year is here, and with it comes newborn whales and their acrobatics. When born, a newborn humpback has a shape similar to a dolphin as well as a light grey colour. Mother’s can be seen teaching calves at local beaches and in front of hotels surrounding the Cape, sometimes breaching no more than 100 yards off of the beach! Although whales can be seen from some hotel balconies, Cabo veterans know that going on a whale watching tour with a reputable company is the way to go. Safe distances must always be kept for both the safety of the whales and tourists, but viewing a whale in its natural environment can prove to be one of the most rewarding experiences for people of all ages. During January, even those not planning to see whales have unannounced encounters. While sport fishing occasionally whales will show up out of nowhere to put on a quick show. Scuba divers often report hearing the whales while underwater, as their sound can travel hundreds of miles and some scientists even believe low frequency whale sounds could travel more than 1,000 miles! Baja
The SIXTH annual Lord of the Wind is to be held in Los Barriles January 13 – 17, 2016. Professional Contestants categories are: Kite Foil Course Racing (IKA 100 point event), Slalom Racing, Freestyle. Open Division Contestants categories are: Slalom, Big Air, Bordercross, Stand-Up Paddle Board (SUP). Lord of the Wind helps fund various community projects, through The Rotary Club of East Cape. Baja Sports Mexico, owner of Lord of the Wind, was formed to assist athletes and high school students interested in kiting, competitive kiting and becoming a kiteboard instructor. The equipment trailer will have kites, boards, harnesses and wet-suits for their use. Much of the equipment has been donated to Baja Sports Mexico by manufacturers and local kiters. One of the many goals of Baja Sports Mexico is to have the students compete in Lord of the Wind and eventually be able to receive their IKO certification to become instructors and/or work in the kiteboarding industry. As it stands now, The Lord of the Wind is the largest International kiteboarding, windsurfing and stand up paddle board event in Mexico. With major support from the Baja California Sur tourism board, this five day event will again showcase some of the world’s best windsurfing/kiteboarding competitors. The East Cape region is mostly known for its stunningly beautiful and largely undeveloped 120km of coastline between Bahía de los Muertos and San José’s estuary. Within these few hundred kilometres there are only a handful of towns of note, along the water and inland. The largest and most accessible resort is LOS BARRILES, a major fishing and windsurfing centre 66km north of Los Cabos airport on Hwy-1. The wind, best in winter, is brilliant for experienced windsurfers (less so for beginners) and makes this a regular venue for international competitions. Los Barriles, the other side of Cabo, has a great selection of accommodations and restaurants, and car rentals are also available. If you don’t rent you can use Eco Tours for your local transportation. The East Cape offers spectacular fishing, spectacular diving, kayaking, golfing or just relaxing poolside in the sunshine is for you, then you deserve the best the East Cape has to offer. 100 miles of intermittent rock and secluded white sandy beaches extends from San José near Baja’s tip to Las Arenas below La Paz. The backyard is the Sierra de La Laguna mountain range, dedicated as a Global Biosphere Reserve. Baja’s East Cape is easily reached by commercial or private airplane, boat or car;

Make sure to bring snacks, maps and water. Another nature’s hot tub adventure is at the Santa Rita Hot Spring, close to the small village of San Jorge. Drive to Agua Caliente and look for a sign directing you to the small village of San Jorge which is about 15 minutes north. After you cross the Agua Caliente and San Jorge arroyos, proceed up a hill which takes you into the village of San Jorge. Continue on until you come to a left hand turn in the road which will take you to the Santa Rita Hot Spring located in Canyon San Jorge. A member of the local Ejido will take your entrance fee. A rock climb will take you to a small pool of warm water. The tranquil setting of the Santa Rita Hot Spring will give you a sense of retreat in nature bliss. Cascada Sol de Mayo is a beautiful Ecological Ranch. A family hiking experience that ends in a refreshing fresh water cascade rendezvous. They also have cabins where you can spend the night, a small eco animal display and a rustic restaurant where guests applaud the lobster tacos and you can enjoy the local family cuisine. This is a lovely place about 9 km outside of the charming small town of Santiago in the foothills of the Sierra Laguna. From Santiago to the entrance it’s a 20 minute drive on dirt roads and only a short hike to view the waterfall from high above. You can continue toward the right to other lakes and a much longer hikes or climb through the boulders which allow you to hike down to the palms surrounding the base of the waterfall. Known as one of the most successful conservation projects in the world, Cabo Pulmo National Park is a 17,000-acre Marine Protected Area established twenty years ago to protect the northernmost coral reef in the Eastern Pacific. WILDCOAST has full-time staff in Cabo Pulmo to promote the conservation of the coral reef among residents, visitors, tourism outfitters, and government agencies. Protected Areas Conservation: The National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP) requires that all visitors to federally protected lands and waters purchase a park pass. For visitors on our expeditions, you will receive a Conservation Passport for $25.00 dolars. This passport was created to raise funds for the continued protection of the shorelines, inlets, and beaches that make this area so extraordinary to visit. The passport allows you to visit Mexico’s Protected Areas as many times as you wish for an entire year. For visitors on day trips, a $5.00 fee per person is required to enter the federally protected areas.

On December 5th, 2015 I had the great pleasure to attend the food and wine celebration known as Sabor a Cabo or “taste of cabo," making this my 10th consecutive year participating in the culinary event. Imagine 30 to 40 of Los Cabos top restaurants all digging deep to put on there best show providing what seems like unlimited food. Some of these restaurants include the famous Edith’s, The Office, Nicksan, Don Sanchez, Habanero’s, Tres Gallos (featured here) and Sunset de Monalisa along with some new comers such as Azul Madera and Agua by Larbi. (Sorry if I missed anyone!). Pair that lineup with some of the Baja’s top wineries, a full open bar and incredible show by Grammy award winning artist Lila Downs and you have a night to remember! One of my favorites of the evening had to be Tres Gallos, not only for the flavor but also for the effort they went through to build an underground oven that cooked a delicious Barbacoa from an entire whole lamb. While still in revelation of this delicious Lamb, Michel the owner had me try the traditional Huazontles or Mexican relative of the American Goosefoot weed, which has been blanched in salt water and battered in a similar fashion to a chile relleno with a little menonite cheese and pasilla chile sauce. Below Michel has included a recipe for those brave enough to attempt at home; or if you prefer to forgo the hassle just stop by Tres Gallos in Cabo San Lucas. A word to the wise, don’t make a habit of missing out on this tremendous event. Sabor a Cabo usually falls on the first Saturday of December. Don't miss it next year! www.saboracabo.mx.
Tres Gallos Huauzontle Recipe INGREDIENTS: - Huazontle 250 gr - Menonita Cheese 50 gr - Pasilla chile salsa 160 gr: Pasilla chile 500 gr, 3 garlic cloves, onion 112 gr, cumin 5 gr, salt 10 gr. - 3 eggs - Flour 25 gr - Cornstarch 14 gr INSTRUCTIONS: Clean the huazontle, select tender leaves and separate from the stem. Boil water with salt and add the huazontle. Boil for 5 to 8 minutes and drain. Once the huazontle has cooled form small balls of huazontle filled with menonite cheese. Conserve in the refrigerator. Separate egg whites from the yolks. Dip huazontles in egg whites and fry in a pan. Pasilla chile salsa: Clean the chile, boil for 10 minutes, set aside and allow to cool. Blend and strain. Add onions and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes. Serve huazontles bathed in the chile pasilla sauce accompanied by Mexican rice and refried beans.

A few hours spent at our markets lets you give back and vote for local families and entrepreneurship with your wallet. From a handful of vendors at Flora Farm back in 2004, our local markets have blossomed through the years at Huerta Maria, The Shoppes of Palmilla and Mar Adentro. The San José Organic Market at Huerta Maria — www.sanjomo.com — is by far the largest and takes place on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sanjomo is set in a lush field behind the downtown historic district. With fresh produce and a bounty from local farms and ranches, it’s also brimming with artists and artisans, services, books, clothing, jewelry and delicious prepared foods. Live music, performances and cultural events complement yoga, massage and fun activities for kids and families. If you’re looking to connect with a nonprofit or to volunteer, you’ll find two of our area’s oldest NGOs here. Liga Mac — www.ligamac.org — works to help families in need. The booth is staffed through 12:30 p.m. MAC’s Marsha Swoboda is a wealth of information. The Los Cabos Humane Society — www.loscaboshumancesociety.com — is our de facto “SPCA”. Linda Aven is always on hand, along with Debbie Platz. They’ll also “dog sit” your pet while you shop. Both groups rely on donations to survive and sell an array of goods like caps, t-shirts, calendars, cookbooks, bags, cards, books and more. The LCHS has darling pet accessories and information on weekly spayneuter clinics and welcomes volunteers. Dog walkers and cat cuddlers are welcome seven days a week at the center in CSL. Details are on the website. Conaculta (National Council for Culture and Arts) also maintains a presence along with the nonprofit women’s group “Mujeres de La Sierra,” featuring products from the La Laguna mountain region. Look for other NGOs through the season like Amigos de Los Niños (Friends of the Children) and Red Autismo (Autism Network) along with workshops and special events from well-known community change makers. Unlike free-spirited Sanjomo, the Shoppes of Palmilla, in the Tourist Corridor at Km. 27, is an upscale open-air plaza that hosts a Friday farmers market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with 30 or so vendors. Liga MAC has a booth here, along with Missy Gibbs from Baja S.A.F.E — bajasafe.com — an animal rescue non-profit that offers spay-neuter clinics and raises funds through the sale of hats, t-shirts, and calendars. Missy also accepts donations of blankets, towels, pet food, leashes and collars. No matter where you are, experiencing our markets is easily within reach. You’ll find an irresistible side of Los Cabos not to be missed.

From the month of November through June, the Art Walk takes place every Thursday from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm, but the art itself never stops, the galleries are open all day, every day! Eco-Aware Golf Course, Solar Roofs and Greywater Recycling Initiatives Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto's sustainable efforts and environmentally friendly initiatives range from solar panel-lined roofs to a sophisticated seawater purification system, as well as grey water and regular recycling systems. In addition, the 7,400-yard Rees Jones-designed Danzante Bay golf course, which is slated for a 2016 opening, is taking shape with a number of eco-friendly measures in mind. “Maintaining unspoiled views, crystal clear waters and a rich environment is a vital piece of who we are,” said Owen Perry, owner and president of Villa Group. “We are proud of the many eco-friendly practices we’ve implemented at Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto. We are dedicated to doing our part to preserve the area’s natural beauty and cultural history by minimizing our environmental footprint as much as possible.” Opening in February 2016, the Danzante Golf Course is being designed to work with the natural beauty and serenity of its surrounding environment. Where possible, plants that must be removed during the construction of the course are being transplanted and relocated throughout the golf course to maintain native landscaping. Those plants that are unable to be transplanted are being used as compost and reintroduced to the area’s soil. In addition, the resort is opting for organic fertilizers instead of hazardous chemicals, as well as maintaining the course with treated water and the use of solar energy for water heating needs, in order to protect the natural environment. Guests who visit Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto are awestruck by the natural beauty of the region, which includes the majestic Sierra de la Giganta mountain range and indigo waters of the Sea of Cortez. 28

The resort’s location within the world’s second largest protected National Marine Park helps limit the size and power of boats that traverse its waters, keeping pollution from watercraft to a minimum, meanwhile protecting the area’s abundant marine life. Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto has worked closely to preserve indigenous flora and fauna in the region with the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), which is the federal agency responsible for promoting the protection, restoration and conservation of ecosystems, natural resources, environmental goods and services in Mexico. As for other ways in which Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto goes green, its solar-panel-lined roofs collect and store power from the area’s more than 300 sunny days each year, greatly reducing the resort’s energy needs. The resort also uses a seawater purification system that collects and purifies water from the Sea of Cortez for use throughout the hotel. The system mitigated the need to create a 30-mile water pipeline from the town of Loreto to Danzante Bay. In addition, the resort created a greywater recycling program, which helps conserve water and aids irrigation on the property, as well as recycles aluminum, glass and plastic. Other sustainable efforts include the Villa del Palmar at the Island’s of Loreto’s maintenance of its own vegetable and herb garden, which are used in gourmet meals at its three restaurant – The Market Restaurant, Casa Mia and the fine-dining Danzante Restaurant – for a farm-to-table experience. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” — Mark Twain One of the coolest things about visiting Todos Santos are the many options available for adventure, discovery. For some, just navigating the dirt roads on the way to the beach in the rental car is enough to make one's heart pump (another great reason to always get car insurance!). But when you arrive at the beach is when the real adventure begins. The surf here in Todos the last couple weeks has been huge, beautiful and warm. For those just learning, Mario's surf school at Cerritos offers lessons on soft top boards with a great success rate of getting first timers standing on the board. And for the seasoned veterans there have been double overhead monster waves, clean and powerful. The view of the surfers from the beach is an adventure all to itself. Another amazing adventure is watching the humpback and Gray whales make their way down our peninsula as they breach and blow their breath high into the air! If you want a real rustic experience you can hop on a panga boat out of Punta Lobos for an up close encounter with the whales and wild Pacific Ocean. The fisherman will usually troll a fishing line and you can hope to catch Seabass, Yellowtail tuna and even the catch and release Marlin! The return to the beach in the panga at full throttle up on the sand is an exciting end to that journey as well as the promised meal of fresh fish,

For those land goers who like to bike ride or hike, there are many trails that lead right from downtown Todos and meander far into the foothills--something to challenge every skill set on the dirt trails. For the real thrill seekers, there is Fernando, a local ranchero, who rents out mules--which carry the bicycles and tents up to the top of the Sierras for a great vista and camp over to bomb down on the bike the next day! Our favorite hike, with a short drive is from Punta Lobos to the Old Port, where reaching the top of hills rewards the eyes with the blue ocean crashing on a deserted rocky beach. For those who want to burn more calories the hike can go all the way to the Las Palmas beach where hopefully someone will pick you up and ferry you back to town. Welcome to the East Cape: offroad, off the grid, and off the beaten path. This is a place of wild beauty, with dramatic desert landscapes and pristine beaches where the only footprints you see are your own, set against the backdrop of the vast Sea of Cortez, whose changing moods are a source of endless fascination: sometimes placid and deep blue-green, sparkling in the sunlight, transparent waters allowing you to see schools of fish swimming beneath your feet as you paddle your SUP board. Or grey and brooding, with whales breaching and spouting on the horizon. Whipping up shreddable waves for surfers of every caliber, and then demonstrating all its power and fury in storm season. On a sunny day, take a leisurely drive on the coast road: it may be bumpy and dusty, but oh! The places you’ll see. Stop anywhere to explore one of the beaches. Say hello to the many friendly donkeys, our local welcoming committee. They’ll stick their noses right into your car to see what you have to offer, and then pose for a picture. Wild horses and free-range cattle are common, but also keep your eyes open for local wildlife: coyotes, mule deer, bobcats, jackrabbits, roadrunners. Rattlers too, so watch your step. Not to mention the whales, dolphins and mantarays, as well as pelicans and other seabirds.
Be respectful of our wildlife! That includes the local residents. Often eccentric, but helpful and friendly, you’ll meet people with a pioneering spirit who helped form the small communities dotting the coastline. There is a lot of creativity here, growing into homegrown projects that include music, food, cinema, art, community centers, festivals... whatever you can imagine is possible when you’re in the desert. Despite the similarities, this is not the wild and woolly Old West: it’s the eccentric, easygoing, and essential East Cape. Take a day, or several, and discover what it has to offer. To get here, take the bridge heading east out of San José del Cabo and continue past La Playita and Puerto Los Cabos. At the final roundabout, either turn right to the beginning of the coast road, or continue straight on the blacktop which will take you several miles further up the coast. Don’t expect to find stores or gas stations on the East Cape, so come prepared with a full tank and drinking water. SANTIAGO HONEY Santiago is a small town located on Highway 1, about an hour’s drive north of San José del Cabo. Like Todos Santos, it's almost directly on top of the Tropic of Cancer. It is also home to the only animal sanctuary in Baja California Sur. If what you are looking for is to shape your muscles, here is a beach ball routine that tones the entire core, flattens the lower tummy, tones the triceps and works the lats (back muscles, under the arm and along the side of your body): 1. Stand with the ball in front of you, feet hip distance apart! 2. Place your hands on the edge of the ball, not on top. 3. Roll out onto the ball into a plank on your forearms. 4. In Los Cabos sandy toes become a way of life, meaningful experiences are on every corner, simple gifts bring the most pleasure. In Los Cabos new discoveries are commonplace, the landscape provides the playground and there is never a shortage of entertaining stories. The breeze nudges my curtains open just enough for the sun to peek and awaken me. As I emerge from the covers I see my puppy patiently sitting at the foot of the bed with the eyes of a doe. She is well aware that mornings mean beach walks and estuary swims. After warming water for tea and grabbing a bag for the inevitable gift she will leave on the sand, we depart. We merge onto the Carretera and drive for only moments before we reach the beach. After ninety minutes of fetching sticks and digging holes to China, my exhausted puppy and I follow our noses to breakfast. Tucked in between artisanal stores we find a mermaid inviting us to sit in a quaint patio with brightly patterned cloths covering the table. As the melodic sounds of Dusolina Giannini greet me from the kitchen, I am delivered coffee and a smile. Soon thereafter the table is covered with plates of sweet breads, huevos rancheros, frijoles, salsas, fresh fruit, and tortillas. We return home and hose off the sand in the backyard. Feeling like I am being watched, I look over my shoulder to see my mango tree staring at us. Her leaves were drooping from being kissed with sunshine day after day after day. Carefully circling her trunk and replenishing her roots, I find the first mango of the season within arms reach. I reap the reward. I grab a basket and scamper to the final hours of the Mercado Organico. After twenty minutes of filling my canasta with fresh herbs, produce, and flowers I am left with no choice but to use both hands to haul my bounty. Sitting on a bench to catch my breath I begin subconsciously tapping my feet to the musicians performing in front of me. With a front row seat to the union of passion and talent, I sit mesmerized until an errant Frisbee throw knocks me out of my trance. Grabbing my snorkel gear I head to the water. The sea teems with schools of colorful fish darting just out of grasp as we share the afternoon playing together. Back on the sand I fall asleep under my umbrella. Bronzed and satisfied, I meet with friends in town for dinner. The laughter coming from the table intrigues a couple visiting from Vancouver and they pull up chairs to join us. Wine and tequila flow as Bonnie describes her day trip to Santiago and Jeremy jokes about getting stuck in the mud in Todos Santos. We spill into next door where the seven piece bronze band is in complete sync, wailing for Salsa night. The woman I share my life with and met in San Jose puts on a show. We dance all night under the stars losing track of time in the heat of the night. In Los Cabos it is just another day in the life. Imagine you live here.

This will add another organic layer of texture without much effort on your side. If you are drawn to sophisticated spaces, choose dark woods and perhaps skip sisal rugs in favor of a shimmery bamboo fiber rug. They are luxurious to the touch and magically shimmer when the light meets their surface. In general, remember to start small if this is your first time trying out how indigo will work in your space. Perhaps start with indigo throw pillows, a small area rug, or just a cluster of accessories? Lastly, I invite you to add an oversized plant to a lonely corner of that room. A tall cactus in a white ceramic planter will look fantastic in a Cabo beach house. I invite you to choose indigo and find your way to inner calm.

Day of the Three Kings (Dia de Los Reyes) January 6
There is a long tradition in Mexico of having children receive presents from the three "Reyes Magos" or ''Three Kings'' on the night of January 5th (Epiphany Eve) or the morning of January 6. The Three Kings festivities in Mexico include families getting together to share ring shaped sweet bread called "Rosca de Reyes" with a small white figurine inside of baby Jesus. Whoever gets the figurine is supposed to organize and host the family celebration for the scheduled Candalaria feast of February the 2nd. El Dia de Los Reyes, honors the historic events of King Herod after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, when the three wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, "Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage." When King Herod heard this, he was frightened and called together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet.'' Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Herod then sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage." When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and opening their treasure chests, offered the child gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another path.

The Six annual Lord of the Wind Showdown will be held in Los Barriles from January 13 – 17, 2016. The prestigious kite boarding and windsurfing contest prize money awarded will be $22,000 USD. Saint Anthony Abad Festival January 17
January 17th in Catholic-rich Mexico celebrates the day of San Antonio Abad, the patron saint of animals and great protector of pets and livestock. According to journalist
Sandra Rios, Anthony, was a great admirer of animals, fought for their protection, and had a great passion for them. Anthony lived much of his life alone in the desert; where he was surrounded by all kinds of animals. It is said when he saw a wounded animal, he healed them. There is a nationwide tradition of Mexican people and ex-pats going to church on this date, and having their pets, and animals---that range from chickens, turtles, ducks, donkeys, dogs, cats and sheep, and having their priest bless them; so they could stay and be in good health along with their owners. It is customary on this date, to adorn animals with ribbons. Both historic Catholic churches in Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo will have their Catholic priest blessing pets on Sunday at Spanish and English masses.
Saint Anthony Abad Festival January 17
The Cabo San Lucas Catholic Church, built in 1730, is the main Catholic place of worship year-round in Cabo. The church will offer bilingual masses on Christmas Eve at 8:00 p.m. and Christmas Day at 12:00 p.m. The church is located at Cabo San Lucas Boulevard and Francisco Madero, across the street from Plaza Amelia Wilkes. In San José del Cabo, the historic Catholic Mission Church, which is found at the main plaza, will offer masses on Christmas Day at 10:00 a.m. in English. A part of the Christmas tradition in Mexico are the savory treats that are a nationwide favorite known as buñuelos: crispy fried flour tortillas soaked in honey
or brown sugar. Other Mexican staples of the Christmas celebrations are tamales and "atole" or "champurrado," which is a thick and savory chocolate drink.
