20 GOLF IN LOS CABOS
letter from the EDITOR Welcome to Los Cabos! In the first few pages of Destino Magazine you can find useful information that will help you maximize your vacation, such as activities, top beaches to visit, maps, important phone numbers, and more. You can also find all this information online at www.DestinoLosCabos.com. While I'm not a golfer, I am a nature lover. I've been surrounded by golfers my entire life and I've had the opportunity to ride along at many different courses. I truly enjoy the serenity of being out on the course and I can say that, thanks to golf, I've been able to see some spectacular places. However, I have yet to find a landscape similar to that of Baja California Sur. Picture the bright green grass winding through the desert atop deep canyons and dramatic ocean-side cliffs or perhaps at the base of red rock mountains in Loreto, all offset by turquoise and deep blue ocean waters of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez. Anyone can appreciate this natural beauty, even if you're not a golfer. If you do happen to be a fan of the sport, you're probably already aware of the numerous championship courses that are in the area. You can't go wrong when choosing which course to play, each one offers a different experience. Read further to learn about the different courses in Los Cabos.

February is the peak of whale watching season. It's not that difficult to spot one from the shore this time of year, but taking a tour is always your best bet. Seeing these gentle giants in their natural habitat is something you will never forget.

des tinations - useful information - maps - top beaches - thing s to do
Los Cabos (the capes) is located in the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of four main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape. La Paz is the Capital of the state, however, technically it is not part of the municipality of Los Cabos. If you take a look at the Baja Sur map you can see that the highways and towns form a loop. The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet at the very tip of the peninsula. It's very clear when you're on the Pacific side; the waves are much larger and powerful and the winds are stronger. If you go further north along the Pacific side the climate and beaches are very different than on the Sea of Cortez. It's usually a few degrees cooler, which is very pleasant during the warm summer months. In the Pescadero and Todos Santos area, the sand is dark and fine and the color of the water is deep blue. The sand in Sea of Cortez beaches is coarser and the water is a lighter tone of blue. The beaches in La Paz and the surrounding areas are possibly the most beautiful ones in Baja Sur. The white powdery sand and the waist-high water create a spectacular shade of turquoise, the kind you see in postcards. The mountains meet the desert, the desert meets the ocean. The Sierra de la Laguna is a mountain range that lies at the southern end of the peninsula. Above 800 meters in elevation dry forests transition to pine-oak forests. The main climate of the region is arid to semi-arid, however, there are very fertile areas where local farmers grow a variety of fruits and vegetables, especially on the Pacific side. The aquarium of the world. These are the words that Jacques Cousteau used to describe the Sea of Cortez. It is said that eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of varieties of fish and mammals found their way into this “trap” and either stayed in its warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool bottom of the two mile-deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. In the months of January through March, Gray whales make their yearly migration from Alaska to give birth to their young in the shallow and warm waters of the Sea of Cortez. 4

Cabo San Lucas
This tourist friendly town, also just known as “Cabo,” is located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula and is full of entertainment for every age and liking. The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet at Land’s End, where you can observe the beautiful rock formations and the famous Cabo arch. In Cabo San Lucas you can find Medano Beach, the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area, an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night.
San José del Cabo
Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district as well as world-class restaurants. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride to explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.
The Corridor
The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 20 minute drive). Along this road you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, championship golf courses and beautiful views. Have your camera ready and make a roadside stop at the Costa Azul view-point for photo opportunities and a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut).
Todos Santos
Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José due to the breezes coming from the Pacific.
East Cape
People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, an eight fingered coral reef that offers outstanding snorkelling and scuba diving and turtle nesting on the beach. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and folks who just want to get away from it all.
La Paz
La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waist high water at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer.
Loreto
Loreto offers the best of both worlds for tourists who long to escape to an 'authentic-Mexico' with settings that take you back-in-time along with ocean activities that rival that of any other modern coastal city. In Loreto you'll find historic buildings such as the enchanting Mision de Loreto - a mission-style church that was built in 1697 as well as The Islands of Loreto which boasts Mexico's largest marine preserve where dolphins, seals, turtles and sea lions all play in the sea. For those who are partial to adventures on land; there is hiking, biking, and nature-tours that fill up a camera with pictures of radiant natural settings. Loreto is the perfect place for everyone from honeymooners to large families.
BAJA 101
Exchange rates - Dollars are accepted almost everywhere and you will get your change in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate.
Cash or Card? - Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted, but you often run into cash only places. Always ask beforehand and carry cash. Your bank will most likely charge you international transaction fees if you pay with your card.
ATMs - The easiest way to get pesos is to simply withdraw money from an ATM in Los Cabos. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate (best possible rate). Examples include Banorte, Bancomer, Santander, Banamex, and HSBC. Non-bank ATMs located in the street will charge higher fees. Some ATMs only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing and try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high fees.
Driving - Renting a car will allow you to enjoy the freedom of exploring Los Cabos. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there is some organization within the chaos. If you are pulled over by local police for committing a driving infraction, the standard procedure is for them to take your Driver’s License. You will then have to go to the Police Station to pay your ticket and pick-up your license. There are two types of gasoline: Magna, which is regular, and Premium. Lleno (pronounced yeno) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos is customary. ALTO STOP

Buying groceries - In Cabo San Lucas, Wal-Mart and Costco are good options and easy to get to. You can always find a taxi outside of these stores. San José has a Wal-Mart and Mega. If you just need to grab something quickly, OXXO stores are small, reasonably priced convenient stores located all over town.

Must-see beaches in Los Cabos
Cabo San Lucas MEDANO BEACH If you’re looking for the action, here it is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2-mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars, right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and familyfriendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. Numerous activities and water sports are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the best spot to do it. Its stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see. Location: In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. The beach is accessible by foot through the east side of the marina or via Avenida del Pescador. Tips: Be prepared to be approached by souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “No, gracias.” Prices don’t vary much from one water sports rental place to another. Visit Lover’s Beach while you’re there. LOVER’S BEACH Getting there is an adventure in itself, due to the fact that it is reachable only by boat or kayak. The easiest way is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Prices are around $15.00 USD per person. Ask your captain to cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Once you arrive, 6

SANTA MARIA Santa Maria offers a stunning horseshoe cove with coarse coral-colored sand and abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkelling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family-friendly beach is relatively secluded; therefore, you rarely run into beach vendors. Location: Travelling west from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the sign which reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. Tips: Santa Maria has brand new palapas and a wooden walkway. Swim from the shore towards the rocks on the right side of the beach for a great snorkeling experience.
San Jose del Cabo
you’ll notice the striking rock formations and caves. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean; the locals call this Divorce Beach. This side is very dangerous for swimming because of the powerful undertow, so swim on Lover’s Beach only. Location: Land’s End beside the famous arch. This beach is accessible only by boat. Tips: There are a couple of vendors who offer beer and water, but you won’t find any other services. A good idea is to spend the day at Medano Beach and take an hour or two to go to Lover’s Beach; this should be time enough to explore this natural wonderland.
Along the Corridor CHILENO
Chileno is a very popular location for snorkelling, swimming or just spending the day under the newly-installed palapas. You’ll find tide pools at the east end of the beach and beautiful reefs offering excellent snorkelling and scuba diving. This is the only beach with public restrooms and it has plenty of palapas for shade. Location: Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near Km. 14 of the main highway. Tips: If you visit Chileno on a weekend,
PALMILLA Palmilla beach is known for its family-friendly calm waters and a mile-long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes, the One&Only Hotel and the world renowned Jack Nicklaus Ocean Nine golf course. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter, but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis. Location: Take the Palmilla ramp exit at Km. 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel. Tips: Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa, or bring your own umbrella. No services are available here. COSTA AZUL If what you’re looking for is a good surf spot you can find it here without driving out of town. Head over to Zipper’s for a surf session and lunch and beers at the restaurant. To the west of Zippers is Acapulquito beach where the Cabo Surf Hotel and
Mike Doyle Surf School are located. You can find surf shops in the area where you can rent surf and stand-up paddle boards and set up lessons. The surf is bigger during the summer, and in the winter this is a good spot for snorkelling and swimming. Location: Exit into the arroyo at Km. 28 via the Costa Azul Bridge. Tips: Swimming with caution is possible in this area but keep an eye out for surfers. LA PLAYITA La Playita (the little beach) is a long stretch of beach where you will often find locals fishing from the shore and families with children enjoying the beach-front playground. On the right end of La Playita you can find a roped-off swimming area just outside the entrance to the beautiful Puerto Los Cabos 500slip marina. To the left is the natural open beach where you can swim, skim-board and enjoy a peaceful beach day away from the crowds. Location: Follow the signs to La Playita/Puerto Los Cabos from Boulevard Mijares in downtown San José del Cabo (across from the fire department). Tips: You will find new and wellmaintained bathrooms, palapas and fishing charters. There are no food services directly on the beach, but several casual restaurants in the surrounding area.
Pacific Side
CERRITOS Cerritos beach is a popular surf spot and swimming here is relatively safe. The scenic 45-minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant is a perfect spot to spend a relaxing day, maybe even get a massage on the beach. If you want to be active, you can take a surf lesson at Baja Surf Camp or rent surf and boogie boards at the Costa Azul Surf Shop. Location: Exit at Km. 66 of the Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos Highway. Watch the markers and look for the signs. Drive about 1.7 miles to the beach area. Tips: Lounge chairs, restrooms, food and drinks are available at The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant. The ocean currents are strong and the waves can be quite powerful on a big day, so swim with caution.

BOATING & FISHING
With calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather, some may argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa María Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, there are endless options to fit your needs.
FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate, no matter what your level of fishing experience is. What to Expect Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment.
FISHING REPORT All that’s fishy from Lands End to La Paz by Gary Graham
Some also include food and drink or these amenities can be added at an additional cost. It is better to leave early; trips usually begin at 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. It is customary to leave the crew a gratuity of 15% to 20%. Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait, you may buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire may also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.
SEASONAL FISHING CHART
BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are several charter companies that can accommodate your needs. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour of the landmark arch, a few hours of fishing, and a cruise to one of our beautiful bays for a swim. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the biggest difference between a yacht and a fishing boat rental is the cost. Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers, pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option. Cruisers accommodate larger groups and are more comfortable when the sea is rough on a windy day. THE MARINAS Marina Cabo San Lucas, the area’s largest commercial marina, features 380 slips and accommodates vessels of up to 375 feet. Amenities include 24-hour security, electricity and potable water, a fuel dock, and convenient laundry and shower facilities. Billfish is a group of predatory fish characterized by a prominent spike extending from their heads. Worldwide, there are 12 species of billfish; here at Land’s End, we are blessed with swordfish, blue marlin, black marlin, striped marlin, sailfish and short-billed spearfish. Regardless of the time of year a visiting angler can be reasonably assured of having shots at least at one of the half-dozen listed. There are few destinations that can honestly claim that boast. Usually by this time the striper bite is well underway, and multiple releases are not uncommon; this year the bite has just begun to blossom. Sometimes the stripers are down deeper in the water column. Right now, they are dominating the catch with most being caught by trolling large lures or soaking a variety of baits the size of some freshwater trout caught back home. The final way, and one of the most exciting, is when the billfish are feeding on the surface attracting a huge cast of sea life -- whale, porpoise, and birds of every description from tiny- to 5-feet wingspread -- join the frenzy of feeding that must be seen to be understood. Dorado, perennial favorites with the Baja sun glistening off of their golden and turquoise bodies during their spectacular leaps, are crowd pleasers for sure. Enough schools of yellowfin tuna mixed with skipjack -- not big ones that deliver epoch Ironman-type battles -- no smaller ones that can rip off a hundred yards of line in an instant, demanding unexpected tenacity from the angler to be successful. While few wahoo have been landed recently, one notable 87-pound monster was caught aboard “Tracy Ann” by Dean Reed from Cape Canaveral. “The largest seen in 15 years,” according to Tracy Ehrenberg, Pisces Fleet. Fishing close to shore along the beaches, small roosterfish and jack crevalle, along with an occasional dorado, are well within range for a shorter morning of fishing for those looking for a trip that doesn’t require an entire day on the water.

SNORKELLING & SCUBA DIVING
Prepare yourself for an incredible show of nature as you swim side by side with colourful schools of fish, eels, rays, octopus, sea turtles and more. The Sea of Cortez or the “Aquarium of the World” offers many opportunities to experience incredible underwater wildlife.
SCUBA DIVING DESTINATIONS Note: travel time is from the Cabo San Lucas marina. Land’s End Intermediate-Advanced - 50’-60’ Five minutes by boat and you can share the water with sea lions and moray eels, with a sunken boat visible in the Falls. Sand Falls Beginners - Advanced - 30’-100’ Steep sand banks drop sharply into a canyon filled with tropical fish. The canyon runs from the depths of the Cabo San Lucas bay to within 30 feet of the beach. Pelican Rock Beginners - 25’-80’ This large rock attracts many tropical fish and is only five minutes from shore. Neptune’s Finger Advanced - 80’-100’ A spectacular canyon wall dive. Cabeza de Ballena Beginners - 20’-40’ A 25-minute boat ride leads to a dive through large boulders with many fish. Santa María Cave Beginners - 20’-40’ Reachable from the shore or a 35-minute boat ride, the entrance to Santa Maria canyon has a huge variety of fish which feed right from your hand. Chileno Beginners - 30’-70’ This location offers parking, sea turtle sightings, tropical fish, and night dives over a sandy and rocky bottom following a 35-minute boat ride. El Gavilán Intermediate/Advanced - 70’-100’ This rocky ledge leads into a canyon where groupers and larger fish are often sighted; 35 minutes by boat. Blow Hole Beginners/Advanced - 30’-70’ 35-minutes from San Lucas, or just 10
minutes from Chileno beach, this dive offers rocky valleys presenting a variety of fish. Las Salinas Beginners - 30’-45’ - A sunken Japanese fishing boat attracts a large assortment of fish at this beginners’ dive; about 80 minutes from Cabo San Lucas or one hour from La Playita. Gordo Banks Advanced - 110’-120’ - A seamount provides views of marlin, hammerheads, skip jacks and at times huge manta rays; one hour from La Playita. Cabo Pulmo Beginner-Advanced - 30’-100’ A one hour drive east of San José or five minutes by boat and you’ll find the only living coral reef in the Sea of Cortez. SNORKELLING SPOTS Cabo offers several methods for snorkelling. You may drive to a local beach and swim out, book a tour with one of the many popular companies, or charter a private boat. Tours are typically two or three hours. Stay away from the Pacific side of the peninsula; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports. Pelican Rock
A quick five-minute ride from the Cabo San Lucas marina or Medano Beach is all it takes to get to this fish-attracting rock.
Lover’s Beach This popular and uniquely-named beach is accessible only by boat. Be on the look-out, however, as the water is not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Bay Snorkel tours regularly visit Santa Maria Bay. If you choose to drive there, it’s an easy swim from the shore to the reef on the right side of the cove. Chileno Bay Snorkelers will find a safe, roped-off area for swimming at this common tour destination. Cabo Pulmo A Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkelling in the area. This eightfingered coral reef is about a 2-hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it!
GOLFING
With the desert meeting the Sea of Cortez as a backdrop, there is no doubt why Los Cabos has become a championship golf destination over the years. From Tiger Woods to Nicklaus and Fazio, many of the big names in golf have designed courses on this unique landscape. CABO REAL The newly renovated Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed golf course is one of the Corridor’s first championship courses and boasts beautiful views of the Sea of Cortez, elevation changes, and has hosted two PGA Senior Slams. 18 holes, Par 73, 7,461 yards. (624) 173-9400 www.questrogolf.com Many courses offer a reduced rate later in the day during twilight hours. Appropriate golf attire is required on all courses and club rental prices range from $35 to $ 65. CABO DEL SOL Ocean Course - A Jack Nicklaus signature course with six ocean front holes (1.5 miles). Known for its “3 finest finishing holes in golf” the Ocean Course is said to be one of the most difficult yet beautiful courses in the area. 18 holes, 7,075 yards, par 72. Desert Course – Designed by Tom Weiskopf, this course winds through the desert above the Ocean Course and challenges the golfer with risk vs reward type decision-making. 18 holes, 7,049 yards, par 72. STAND UP PADDLING
There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just a paddle and a board. Stand up paddling is a great way to see marine life and to get a great workout and while enjoying nature. At Medano beach you can rent boards in several locations. Certain companies offer paddling lessons and some have yoga classes on the board. Tips! • Your feet should be parallel, about hipwidth distance apart, centred between the board rails (edges). • Keep toes pointed forward, knees bent and your back straight. Balance with your hips and core. Keep your arms straight and twist from your torso as you paddle, you have more strength in the abdominal muscles than in your arms. Your gaze should be level at the horizon and avoid staring at your feet. • If you’re paddling on the right, your right hand is lower and on the paddle shaft. Your top left hand is on the top of the grip. The elbow (angle) of the paddle faces away from you. • Plant the paddle by pushing the blade all the way under the surface, pull it back to your ankle, then out of the water. To go in a reasonably straight line, paddle about 4 or 5 strokes on one side, then switch to the other. When you switch sides, you’ll reverse hand positions. • When you fall aim yourself to the side so you don’t fall the board.

This sport is most popular in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (the north-east side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kiteboarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than in La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December. Every January the Lord of the Wind tournament takes place in La Ventana.

Your family will have the opportunity to help these fragile and tiny creatures make it safely into the sea. Children will learn about the importance of conservation and they will surely enjoy the experience of helping these little friends. Sol de Mayo Waterfall Cascade Located about an hour and a half away from Los Cabos, the Sol de Mayo Oasis is yet another natural beauty of the Southern Baja California region, and the best time to visit is the month of November, after the September and October rains. The hike leads the adventurous to a majestically beautiful oasis where everyone can swim and even dive into the cool, serene waters. Be sure to pack a lunch, and take plenty of water. There are plenty of signs to guide everyone to this wonderful piece of paradise. After arriving in Santiago, turn right up the little hill towards the town square. The cost is $6 US per person to access the easy hike to the clear-water falls. Humane Society Visit Give your family the opportunity to give back as a dog walker or as a cat petting volunteer at the Los Cabos Humane Society or El Ranchito in San Jose. These loving animals will surely appreciate your time and who knows? Maybe you go back home with a new furry family member! Everything you need to know about Baja Sur

During whale season, all you need is an ocean view, you can see a whale breathing or breaching in all its grandiosity from the beach or you can take one of the many daily whale watching tours leaving from the Marina in Cabo San Lucas. This great migration occurs along the Pacific Coast of North America as the magnificent Pacific Gray Whales migrate from the frozen Arctic, all the way to the isolated lagoons on the Pacific Coast of Baja California, Mexico. Gray whales migrate farther than any whale — or any mammal. Their 18,000-kilometer round trip (11,200 miles) takes them from the Bering Sea down the Pacific Coast of North America to Baja California and back to the Arctic. The southward migration starts in early October, when the days grow shorter and northern waters begin to freeze. By December, whales may be seen courting and mating, many are on the migration route, some may be arriving in the lagoons of Mexico. Pregnant females are in a hurry to get to Mexico, so they arrive first. Other whales might take their time getting there. By March, mother and baby pairs dominate the lagoons and it’s time for males and newly-pregnant females to start their journey north. New mothers are doing “spring training” for the babies so they’ll be ready for their own first migration by swimming against the currents near the mouth of the lagoon, helping them build strength and endurance. In April, most of the adults and older juveniles are heading north while the first northbound whales may already have reached Alaska. In June the hungry whales are well into the northern waters where they find plenty of food and where they feast and start to gain back weight they lost during migration 14
www.DestinoLosCabos.com
and breeding/calving season. By the month of August, migration and mating are just weeks away, and whales keep feasting in order to be ready. A 30-ton whale will expend so much energy on the migration to the Baja lagoons that it may lose up to eight tons of its blubber. Little or no whale food is available in the breeding grounds, so this is their time to eat! Like us, most marine animals rely on sound for survival and depend on unique adaptations that enable them to communicate, protect themselves, locate food, and navigate underwater. Animals change the rate of sound production and the structure of the sounds to send different messages. Communication over long distances is usually associated with reproduction, territoriality, and maintenance of group structure. Communication over short distances is used in social interactions involving aggression, individual identification, and to maintain mother-offspring contact. Most marine mammals use sound to regain contact when members of a group are separated. Similar to sonar systems on navy ships, some whales use sound to detect, find, and characterize objects, including obstacles and other whales. By emitting clicks, or short pulses of sound, these marine mammals can listen for echoes and detect objects underwater. Some whales and dolphins use sound to locate food. They send out pulsed sounds of high intensity and frequency that are reflected back when they strike a target. This echo helps the dolphin or whale identify the size and shape of an object, the direction in which the object is moving and enables them to estimate how far away the object is. Echolocation is a very sophisticated way of locating prey and can even be used to find prey that is hidden in the sand.
THE LAGOONS Baja California Sur is the main and most attractive destination where people can gather to observe whales in Mexico. Here, gray whales find Laguna Ojo de Liebre, Laguna San Ignacio, Bahía Magdalena and Estero La Soledad to enjoy the winter, give birth and raise their pups. Ojo de Liebre is found at the Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve, and it is considered a World Heritage Site. It is here where, year after year, these species gather in a large group. Ojo de Liebre enjoys two observation areas, one near to the lagoon entrance, and the other in the interior. You will find certified boats in the town of Guerrero Negro. To protect the whales, only small boats are authorized to navigate in their waters, and there is only one site for camping. Laguna San Ignacio is a splendid sanctuary for the gray whale. Ecotourism activities include trips to meet the whales where they give birth to watch them play joyfully with each other. People are bilingual, and service includes camping and other accommodations. You can enjoy different activities like nature walks, motorbike rides, birding, kayaking, surfing and diving. San Ignacio is also home to the Sierra de San Francisco Cave Paintings, and is a paradise in the middle of the desert. An underground river emerges to the surface of the Earth here, and it forms a lagoon surrounded by reedbeds. Bahía Magdalena is only a threehour car ride from La Paz, on the Pacific side of the Península. The rich marine life in the area attracts whales.
Kayaking and birding while you row through the mangroves is a wonderful recreative option. This is a fishermen town, and from January to March, the fishing cooperatives work as tourist guides and organize trips to be closer to the gray whale. Two oceanic currents meet here: the cold Alaskan current, and the current coming from the tropical South. This water encounter generates nutrients in abundance, and provides a happy home to great species. You can explore the dunes, follow coyote tracks, and study birds and insects. Always changing, this is a natural scenery sculpted by the wind. A great way to enjoy the region is to camp on Magdalena Island. In three days, you can explore the dunes, kayak the mangroves, and visit the sea lion colony. Besides the gray whale, you can also meet with the blue, humpback and sperm whale, and occasionally you can have an encounter with the Orca. Of course, this natural habitat is also attractive to a variety of migratory birds, and bird watchers love it here. Your trip can last from one to eight days, or more, depending on your interest. You can choose to include hotel accommodations, boats, or camping, with campgrounds at the shore of La Laguna complemented by activities such as kayaking and trekking. Ecologically-conscious behaviour is the rule: you will only walk through pre-established paths to avoid unnecessary impact on the environment, and only biodegradable materials are used in the area.

whale travels a distance that is equivalent to going to the moon and back! Some
travel a roundtrip of between 16,000-20,000 km (10,000-12,400 miles) every year between their winter calving lagoons in the warm waters of Mexico and their summer feeding grounds in the cold Arctic seas.
Do whales sing?
As most of the humpbacks have already reached their winter mating grounds this month, the gray whales are not far behind them. While the humpbacks are leaping into the air and showing off their unusually long pectoral fins at the southern tip of Baja; in Magdalena Bay the docile grays are enjoying each other’s company without all acrobatics employed by the rowdy humpbacks. Possibly attributed to the strong El Niño event this year, we have seen some unusual creatures not common to see here in Cabo. This list includes: killer whales, elephant seals, blue whales, bryde’s whales, along with several other species not normally seen. The activity is already picking up with many double breaches and playful calves spotted from the lighthouse fishing grounds all the way to Pedregal. As the whale watching season progresses the activity will move closer and closer towards Cabo, with the beginning of February being the height of the whale activity around Los Cabos. I recommend if you have an extra day or two during your vacation, seeing the gray whales and the humpback whales is a must! *
Gray whales lack vocal cords but do have a voice. They produce sounds by forcing air from their nasal passages into sacs, without exhaling any air.
Whales’ brains sleep one half at the time.
Only one half of their brain will sleep at a time. This is the only way that they are able to get the amount of rest that they need and still take care of basic functions, such as breathing, that is necessary for their bodies to survive.

It took all of 16 years, after the Mexican government began its infrastructure development of Cabo San Lucas in 1974, to turn the small fishing village into the second most popular tourist destination in Mexico. It was 1990 when legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus helped create the golfing boom that Los Cabos currently enjoys. Jack’s great course designs at Palmilla, Cabo del Sol and El Dorado led to other well-known golfers creating beautifully-crafted layouts of their own. Greg Norman, Gary Player, Tom Weiskopf and Davis Love III were the next prominent golf pros to arrive in Los Cabos and attach their names to courses of their distinct design. Three local courses have been recognized among the world’s Top 100 Golf Courses. Two of them, Cabo del Sol’s Ocean Course, and Palmilla, are of Jack Nicklaus design, whose focus on the region gave credence to Southern Baja California's perfect climate and wonderful landscape for the spectacular game of golf. Located just north of Cabo San Lucas is the gorgeous, challenging links-style Davis Love III-designed Diamante Dunes course, which is ranked 52nd in the Top 100 World List. This course's rolling desert layout features spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean,

with the Sierra de la Laguna mountains and the El Faro lighthouse visible in the distance. Diamante Dunes has recently been joined by the neighbouring Tiger Woods-designed course El Cardonal. While neither course is open to the public, rounds can be arranged for those with an interest in ownership opportunities at the much-anticipated Pacific Oceanside development. Diamante's El Cardonal golf course showcased the grand opening ceremony with none other than the world's most famous championship golfer who designed the course himself, Tiger Woods. ''I set up the golf strategy to make golfers think and make choices,'' said the affable Woods at the grandiose event attended by thousands of invited guests and local Cabo San Lucas dignitaries. ''Regardless of your handicap, there are going to be different ways to play every hole. Angles of approach are going to be very important and will dictate the type of shots you should consider. You must be willing to weigh risks and make smart choices. Proper strategy will provide the best opportunity to score. The biggest compliment I can receive after you play my course is that you want to play it again." According to Woods, El Cardonal, "Will remind golfers of the old-style California courses that I grew up playing." It is Woods vision that
the course will challenge good players while remaining enjoyable for players of every skill level. Quivira Golf Club is a Jack Nicklaus designed course that was built atop the Pacific cliffs on 1,850 acres of a planned gated community by resort developer, and avid golfer, Ernesto Coppel. The course features huge Sea of Cortez sandy dunes, and rolling desert landscape foothills. ''We tried to create some excitement on the mountain and in the dunes'' said the ''Golden Bear'' Nicklaus at the course's grand opening. ''I believe we've created a golf course that plays as spectacular as it looks.'' The crashing waves below, and rising holes above, are proof that the challenging course is definitely one of the newest marvels in the fabulous list of golf courses that make Los Cabos. The club house is open to the public. Just outside of Cabo San Lucas is the Ocean Course at Cabo del Sol, which is considered a true masterwork by designer Jack Nicklaus. Over the history of its existence, the Cabo del Sol course has been on several occasions ranked one of the Top 100 courses in the world by Golf Magazine and Golf Digest.

tween Cabo San Lucas and San José you'll find Cabo Real, the only course s Cabos area to have hosted two PGA rand Slam Events. It features a gorart of lush fairways, swaying palm wering cactus plants and the typically views of the Sea of Cortez. The Rob-
Farther down the tourist corridor are the two private courses, El Dorado and Querencia. Mr. Nicklaus personally spent many hours walking the rugged coastline, quiet desert foothills and shaded canyons of El Dorado, envisioning a course that blends the natural landscape. The result is a golf course that links the drama of the coast to the desert, in a new translation of golf’s great architectural traditions. El Dorado is a stunning and memorable golf course imbued with a friendly casual ambiance. Querencia, Tom Fazio´s first project in Mexico, is a private course ranked as the number one golf course in the country by Golfweek magazine. Its 18 holes carve deep arroyos and rest atop arid plateaus with stunning views of the Sea of Cortez. Harmonious transitions from hole-to-hole, subtle breaks, contoured fairways, and uniquely shaped bunkers are what characterise this daunting yet enchanting course.
Purchased by the Mayan Resorts Group in 2004, Punta Sur is currently open to Grand Mayan hotel guests, as well as the general public. Golf gear and rentals are available at the pro shop. Club Campestre, which opened in 2007, is yet another course designed by Jack "The Golden Bear" Nicklaus. Campestre is a 6,966yard layout that is nestled within the desert foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna’s natural beauty. Like other Nicklaus-designed courses, Club Campestre has fairways that are considered quite unforgiving, as well as dramatic elevation changes, and what some have properly referred to as "diabolical greens." The coastal grass provides for consistently good lies, while the putts at Campestre have proven to be most difficult. In the quiet town of La Playita, just east of San José del Cabo, is Puerto Los Cabos, a course that features a nine-hole layout designed by Greg Norman and Jack Nicklaus. The first nine holes, the Mission Course, was the brain-child of two-time Majors champion Greg "The Great White Shark" Norman. The back nine, the Ocean Course, was orchestrated by Nicklaus. The two contrasting courses are expected to eventually reach an expansion that will create separate 18hole styles that could prove to be equally challenging. The highlight of Norman’s Mission Course is the breathtaking view from the 6th hole tee box. The Ocean Course back nine contains the longest par of all of the golf courses in town, a 498-yard 16th hole. Every April, Los Fundadores Beach Club hosts their Puerto Los Cabos Golf Club "Chupacabra Open" night golf tournament. The first annual tournament was limited to the first 18 teams (36 participants) who signed up on a first-come, first-serve basis. *
The Los Cabos golf staple Palmilla is considered the crown jewel of courses designed by Jack Nicklaus. The landscape and Sea of Cortez views at Palmilla are truly magnificent. There are 27 holes in all, which stretch over three nine-hole courses: The Ocean Course, the Mountain Course, and the Arroyo Course. The Ocean Course is the most visually breathtaking of the three. There are five sets of tee boxes at the courses, catering to low and high handicappers alike. Punta Sur Golf Course, which opened in 1987, is a body of green landscaping which holds the special distinction as the oldest golf course in Cabo. Punta Sur is still a local favourite whose 3,153-yard 9-hole layout is very appealing to both beginner and budget-conscious players. There is only one major water hazard and the course is mostly flat, with narrow fairways, moderate bunkers, and views that afford visitors glimpses towards the Sea of Cortez and Sierra de la Laguna mountains.

A WHALE SHARK ADVENTURE
CABO REAL ESTATE TOUR
by Kale Cowell Each winter, schools of the world’s largest fish, the whale shark, return to the Sea of Cortez. These massive sharks pose no threat to humans – they are filter feeders, which suck in enormous amounts of plankton and small fish as food. Some of the most popular attractions in nearby La Paz are boat tours on which guests have the opportunity to observe and swim with these beautiful creatures. Recently, I was fortunate enough to join a group of six on a tour to swim with these gentle giants. We chose Fun Baja, which operates out of the Costa Baja Marina just north of La Paz. The tour began at 9:00 am with 20-30 minute boat ride to the whale shark feeding grounds. Within a few minutes of reaching the turquoise blue water, we eyed telltale fins breaking the surface. Soon we could see a dark, spotted hulk sliding through the water. At nearly 10 meters in length and with an aggressively pointed tail and dorsal fins, there was no doubt that this was a whale shark! The shark swam slowly, and many of us were eager – though a bit nervous – to dive in to see the beast up-close. The captain, however, urged us to be patient. He suggested that we wait to find a shark which was stationary to avoid exhausting ourselves. We spotted several other sharks swimming lazily around the boat and each time the captain asked us to wait. We were soon rewarded for our patience, as we came across two of the giant fish hovering below the surface. The crew quickly situated us with fins and snorkel gear, and we slipped into the water. It was colder than expected and for a moment I wished I had rented a wetsuit, but that thought passed quickly as I approached the enormous fish. They were easily four meters long, hanging almost vertically with their tails descending. Their enormous mouths opened and closed, gulping huge quantities of plankton-clouded water. Though we knew they were not dangerous, it was unnerving to be so close to such gigantic creatures. We had been asked by the crew not to hang on to or touch the whale sharks, and we were careful not to interfere as we swam around them, continually impressed by their size and beautifully patterned skin. Soon we climbed back aboard the boat, each of us smiling. We enjoyed sodas while spying several more sharks on the ride back to the marina. The encounter with the whale sharks was one of the most incredible and gratifying adventures we’d ever experienced, and I know I will never forget it. I can’t wait to go back next year! www.funbaja.com (612) 106-7148 - reservation@funbaja.com 22

With a Great Game of Championship Golf by Sabrina Lear
It’s no secret that for Los Cabos “locals” a big part of our social life revolves around events to benefit community needs, and the needs are great. Golf is no exception and if you love the game, three very popular annual charity tournaments provide an excellent opportunity to play Championship courses while enriching the lives of others simply by teeing off. Los Cabos Children’s Foundation – The Spirit of Love, Joy and Service First up in 2016 is the Los Cabos Children’s Foundation’s (LCCF) “invitation only” Fred Duckett Challenge, this February 20, at the exclusive Tom Fazio course at Querencia. Celebrating its 10th year, “The Duckett” honors Fred Duckett, longtime Los Cabos leader, philanthropist and Querencia member who passed away in 2006. (Fred and Patty spent their 1952 honeymoon in Las Cruces on the East Cape, which led to their love of Los Cabos.) Today, the Duckett helps fund the LCCF’s three programs: The Spirit of Love Pediatric Congenital Heart Defects and Spirit of Joy Pediatric Cancer programs work in tandem with the Spirit of Service, which endows worthy nonprofits throughout our State, including 2015 grantees Amigos de Los Niños, Liga MAC, Red Autismo, Corazón de Niño, Friends of the Children, Sarahuaro, East Cape Health Center, Sudccai and Opening Hearts. As of 2015 year’s end, the LCCF has provided 68 open-heart surgeries and treated over 50 pediatric oncology patients since 2012. Los Cabos Humane Society Paws and Claws Golf Tournament at Palmilla Many visitors to Los Cabos aren’t aware that our local humane society is privately funded and relies solely on donations to provide “SPCA” services to our community. The Los Cabos Humane Society (LCHS) fills this role through its hardworking staff and a small cadre of dedicated volunteers, providing spay-neuter clinics, animal 24

advocacy and rescue, education, and shelter for cats and dogs at its Cabo San Lucas Animal Center. This year’s Paw and Claws Golf Tournament, held at Palmilla since 2012, is tentatively set for April 3. Pre-sale tickets for this very popular event, which sold out last year, are on sale now. Paws and Claws includes a pre-tournament brunch and dinner at celebrity Chef Todd Chapman’s Don Sanchez in San Jose, plus 50% off on a second round of golf at Palmilla. Volunteers are always on course with adoptable dogs, which led to Palmilla Golf’s GM and PGA pro Jason Ballog and wife Carolyn’s adoption of Mike in 2012.

Casa Hogar’s “Fore the Boys Golf Tournament” A quick look at Casa Hogar’s Facebook page at “Casa Hogar de Cabo San Lucas A.C.” shows just how dynamic this home for boys, orphaned and from troubled homes, has become since opening in the Cabo San Lucas Reforma neighborhood in early 2008. Smiling faces brighten the timeline, from fun field trips and sports to training programs, educational and medical triumphs and community service projects. Today, the home cares for 34 boys and youths up to 18 years of age. Along with 24-hour care, and a psychologist, the boys are also prepared for adoption or family reunification. Casa Hogar receives no government assistance and relies on private donations and fundraisers like its annual Gala and Fore the Boys Golf Tournament to meet operating expenses, and to realize its goal of building a home next door for girls and young women. Casa Hogar’s Sixth Annual Gala Fundraiser is March 3 at Ventanas al Paraiso. For more information contact Executive Board Member Angie Castillo at amj1970@hotmail.com. www.casahogarcabo.com

View art and enjoy a glass of wine as you stroll the enchanting streets of the Gallery District in downtown San Jose del Cabo. End your night with a dining experience at one of the many exquisite restaurants in the area. From the month of November through June, the Art Walk takes place every Thursday from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm, but the art itself never stops, the galleries are open all day, every day! The ever-growing Gallery District has become in recent years the cultural centre of Los Cabos with many high-end fine art galleries displaying original paintings, sculpture, photography, and jewelry made by local and international contemporary artists. Among these art galleries are shops housing the works by the top folk artists and artisans of Los Cabos and Mexico .

The Tradition of Golf + Brunch by Tadd Chapman
Ah, yes, the old Scottish tradition of Golf (have I mentioned that I am part Scottish?). I don’t get out as much as I like but when I do it seems to be more about the bonding , beers and bags of salty snacks than the score card at the end of the round; and for a sport that’s nearly 500 years old you would think we would have evolved to snacks better than golf caddies laden with potato chips and ice cold beers. Don’t get me wrong; almost nothing beats cold beer at the end of 4 hours on the links, or half way thru for that matter… But were in Cabo and we can do better, and at least once a week there actually is something better. After all, is there really a more satisfying way to end a morning of golf or begin any Sunday for that matter than by stacking your plate with an assortment of shellfish and prime rib with a side of all the champagne you can drink? That being said, the art of brunching has often been reduced to home-town style “all you can eat “ buffets that feature anything but special instead or a life celebration. However, there is one notorious Cabo Golf Course that has taken brunch to the next level, created a celebration of life if you will! The Cabo del Sol clubhouse not only features breath taking views, but a brunch selection that’s worth making a regular visit. While listening to a Latin jazz trio, guests get to enjoy a full range of items that are as fresh as they are delicious. Treats range from the traditional (pancakes and waffles) to the exotic (Lobster pot stickers and sushi, anyone?), all while maintaining quality throughout. The omelet station is fully stocked and always made to perfection, while the crepe station will draw out your inner dessert loving mad scientists (I recommend stuffing the crepe with Hagan Daaz Ice Cream. In the event that you are among the (sad) few watching their diets during such a feast, the fruit bar and house made salads are enough to leave you more than satisfied, but if you still crave a little something more pile some of that local savory ceviche on to your plate. Delectable food aside, the Cabo del Sol Brunch does an incredible job at setting a relaxing atmosphere. The courtyard atmosphere and combination of both ocean and desert views go hand in hand with the sights of little children dancing to the live music in their Sunday Best attire and generations gathering together for quality family time. The serving staff is beyond courteous and always helpful, even offering to help carry a plate to the table. And yes, did I mention the mimosas, lots and lots of them. It’s no question how Cabo del Sol’s brunch has grown to be the crown jewel of Cabo brunches, it combines the three best ingredients found in town: ocean view, breezy atmosphere, and fresh local food. With such a winning combo, you may find yourself pretending to like Golf just to squeeze in a reservation. Everything you need to know about Baja Sur

EAST CAPE By Michelle Suderman

This is a once a year opportunity to visit the Todos Santos' artists in their natural environment. The Open Studios Tour is now a two day event where visitors will be able to see more art, more studios and spend more time with the artist at each studio. With a map in hand, showing all of the studios, visitors will get a glimpse of what the life of the artist is like. Up the back streets of the town, they will be able to see what goes on inside these studios. Last year’s 2015 Open Studios Tour with 34 participating artists saw 400 visitors roaming throughout the town in one giant art fest that raised $54,613 pesos for the Children’s Art Programs of The Palapa Society of Todos Santos. This year, all proceeds will benefit this same program. February 6-13, 2016 A week-long celebration of Mexican culture that typically features live music, dance and theatre performances, painting and drawing exhibitions, lectures on local environmental and social issues, piano and poetry recitals and lots more. Artisans from different parts of Mexico also set up shop next to the church to sell their crafts.
If you’re an avid golfer, the lower East Cape might strike you as a bit of a wasteland. There aren’t many golf courses in this desertmeets-sea region, other than the DIY ones made by local residents (shhh: these are a secret, only for those in the know), but when you need to take a break from the links, there’s nothing like a leisurely drive up the coast. You’ll find astounding views of the Gulf of California, where the beach is framed by an undisturbed desert landscape on one side, and the blue-green sea on the other. At this time of year, it’s practically guaranteed that you’ll glimpse whales jumping and spouting, including grey whales, humpbacks, and pilot whales. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot dolphins and bat rays—even orcas, on rare occasions. But during your travels, you’ll discover that the lower East Cape is certainly no culinary wasteland. If you get hungry (or thirsty) along the way, there are several options: Closest to San José del Cabo is Buzzard’s Bar and Grill. Sink your feet into the sand as you enjoy the daily specials. Their breakfasts are famous, and if you enjoy fishing, they will also cook your catch. In Los Zacatitos, head directly to Zac’s Bar and Grill, which offers a relaxed atmosphere and outdoor and indoor dining. The fresh fish

tacos are not to be missed, nor are the all-you-can-eat Saturday buffets. Further up the coast in Vinorama, check out VidaSoul Hotel. Luxurious yet laid-back, VidaSoul offers fine dining in its open-air restaurant, as well as live music, a beachside pool, and modern hotel rooms. And if you find yourself on the East Cape with a real need to get in a little golfing, try Hotel Palmas de Cortez in Los Barriles, which offers a driving range and nine-hole course, among many other features. Keep in mind that many of the roads on the East Cape are dirt roads, and conditions vary. If you decide to visit, it’s advisable to use an SUV or something similar. To get here, take the bridge heading east out of San José del Cabo and continue past La Playita and Puerto Los Cabos. At the final roundabout, turn right towards Buzzard’s and the beginning of the coast road, which will take you to Los Zacatitos and farther. Or, continue straight along the paved asphalt road, where there is a turnoff toward Los Zacatitos and Zac’s. Vinorama and VidaSoul Hotel are further along the coast road. Los Barriles can be accessed via the Transpeninsular Highway. *

“I have no doubt that Hole 17 at Danzante Bay Golf Course will be one of the best in the world.” - Rees Jones Danzante Bay's stunning Hole 17
Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto is preparing to open what “U.S. Open Doctor” and world-renowned golf architect Rees Jones calls one of the best courses in golf. The 7,400-yard Rees Jones-designed Danzante Bay Golf Course will offer golfers a chance to play amidst the majestic Sierra de la Giganta mountains and indigo waters of the Sea of Cortez for a challenging, yet friendly golf experience.
natural beauty and serenity of its surrounding environment, giving golf aficionados the ability to challenge their game through a variety of settings, including valleys, arroyos, foothills and dunes, as well as a lake between holes 10 and 11. While all holes showcase a mixture of amazing sights of Danzante Bay, the Islands of Loreto, and the Sierra de la Giganta mountain range, Hole 17 is the crown jewel of the course, with a stunning panoramic view of Montserrat Island.
“Danzante Bay Golf Course offers a mixture of three types of courses, melding the mountain and desert views of those in Sedona, calming ocean views like those of Pebble Beach, and lush natural beauty similar to Manele Golf Course in Lanai, Hawaii, all rolled into one ideal setting for a weekend golf getaway,” said Owen Perry, co-owner and president of Villa Group. “We can’t wait until guests have an opportunity to tee-off at Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto.” The first golf course in the Villa Group portfolio, Danzante Bay Golf Course melds with the
“I have no doubt that Hole 17 at Danzante Bay Golf Course will be one of the best in the world,” said Jones, who has designed or redesigned more than 170 golf courses in his career. The course utilizes Paspalum turf, a surface that is particularly suited to the climate of the Baja region and complements the topography of the site. A noted environmentalist, Jones designed the course with a number of eco-friendly measures in mind, including transplanting and relocating native plants, using organic fertilizers instead of hazardous chemicals, and maintaining the course with treated water and the use of solar energy for water heating needs. The golf course will also include a safari-style clubhouse with two luxury tents facing a picturesque view of Danzante Bay, a full restaurant, bar and Pro shop. Golf lessons with a professional instructor will also be available. Other features include a driving range and an 18-hole putting course that will be a miniature version of the larger course where families can practice together.

THE LONELY WHALE FOUNDATION
The gray whale migrates more than 10,000 miles each year, the longest migration of any mammal. The oceans occupy nearly 71% of our planet’s surface and, although coral reefs comprise less than 0.5 per cent of the ocean floor, it is estimated that more than 90 per cent of marine species are directly or indirectly dependent on them. Dedicated to bringing people closer to the world’s oceans through education and awareness, inspiring empathy and action for ocean health and the wellbeing of marine wildlife, Adrian Grenier created The lonely whale foundation, with the help of supporters and friends, such as Leonardo Di Caprio. The lonely whale is a whale that travels the ocean singing her song in a frequency of 52Hertz, a completely different frequency than the one other known whales use to communicate. Whales are inherently social animals. If whales prefer to sing similar songs, what would make one of them sing at a completely different pitch? People often like to imagine that animals experience the same emotions we do. Thus, many are convinced that the 52Hertz call of this mysterious whale means She is lonely. There’s certainly no proven reason to assume she is, but the fact that we believe she might be lonely because her voice vibrating in a different frequency is a clear reflexion of how we, as humans, see the world. While you chew on that one, know this: Lonely Whale Foundation plans to produce a common core aligned curriculum that utilizes the sympathetic and friendly character of the Lonely Whale as a vehicle to engage students in units on empathy, communication, and ocean and environmental science. Why is this relevant to Baja? Well, look around, do you see anything but Ocean? Check it out www.lonelywhale.org. 28

Surf Paddling is great cardiovascular training. It can burn a good amount of calories and at the same time give you a core work out. You will also improve your balance so you can prepare yourself for surfing, or simply clear your mind to enjoy the rest of the day fully present. An early am paddle to the arch ... Does a soul good! Tips! • Your feet should be parallel, about hip-width distance apart, centred between the board rails (edges).

A sneak peek into home ownership in
GOLF COMMUNITIES of Los Cabos
by Blake Harrington SO MUCH OF THE BEAUTY of Los Cabos is the fun under the sun and the limitless possibilities of activities you can enjoy in the same day. Golf, without a doubt, is one of Cabo’s most desired activity when visiting either short or long term. There is proof of this demand in the continuing development of some incredible private, semi-private, and public golf courses and communities. As a Los Cabos resident and avid golfer, I’ve had the pleasure to be able to tour each of these properties in person, experience the amenities, and talk with members and staff. Golf is not just a game, it’s an experience. I’ve outlined some of Los Cabos’ most attractive and successful developments to further educate our Destino Magazine readership on the amenities of each property, the differences between them, and what each community offers its prospective real estate buyers. There is truly something for every budget and every level of golfer. Querencia – San José del Cabo This private club and residential community, nestled into the mountains in the San José Corridor above Cabo Surf Hotel, boasts a Tom Fazio 18 hole golf course and treats each member with luxury and privacy at each step of the experience. “The Q” provides its residents with a 5 star 58,000 sq ft Club House complete with Valet parking, Spa, Golf Shop, Infinity Pool with Cabanas, fitness center with yoga pavilion, and multiple dining options. Querencia has recently brought some new product on the real estate market including their Las Verandas condos which are 2,3, and 4 bedrooms starting at $695,000. Their Club Villas, both new and re-sale, are in the low $2 million range and offer views east and of the golf course. And, of course, you can buy your own lot and build a custom home. 30

Quivira – Pacific Side/Cabo San Lucas With dramatic views and cliffside golf holes, this is Jack Nicklaus’ newest course design in Los Cabos. From the developers at Copalla and Pueblo Bonito comes Quivira, a unique experience for those avid golfers. This resort-style course has incredible views at each hole and gives the golfer an experience unlike any other. As a brand new project, most of Quivira’s properties are being sold pre-construction and the first are set for delivery in June of 2015. For buyers, they offer many different options that depend on budget and what each specific buyer may desire. One of the reasons for Quivira’s strong start is their offering of developer financing to qualified prospective buyers. These terms can differ depending on the down payment and length of loan terms. Considering the lack of mortgage lending in Mexico from American banks, developer financing is a great option for those interested in financing their vacation home. With starting prices in the low $400s, there’s a product for just about any budget. El Dorado – Corridor Where the rich and famous live and play, El Dorado, is home to such celebrities as George Clooney, Cindy Crawford, and many other A-listers from Hollywood as well as a variety of businessmen and athletes. As a fully private club, El Dorado gives its homeowners and members an exciting, fun experience with a casual atmosphere amidst world-class amenities. Price per square foot, El Dorado is the most expensive community to live in Los Cabos. Considering your affluent neighbors, you could find yourself with a price tag of $10,000,000 for an oceanfront villa or you can start at a little less at of an entry point of around $3,500,000 for an ocean view townhome/villa.
Puerto Los Cabos – San José del Cabo Grupo Questro’s latest project in Los Cabos boasts a new marina for all sizes of boats and yachts, numerous restaurants and hotels, and an 18 hole championship composite (Nicklaus/ Norman) golf course. Puerto Los Cabos has changed the face of San José del Cabo and brought top brands like Ritz-Carleton, JW Marriott, and their own El Ganzo Boutique Hotel. Puerto Los Cabos offers a variety of real estate products, starting in the mid $700s for fairway townhomes and all the way up to beachfront estates around $7,000,0000. PLC has a lot of properties available and also offers ocean view lots for sale to build your custom home. Club Campestre – San José del Cabo When you arrive to Cabo, the first golf course you see from the toll road highway from the airport is Club Campestre. Undulating greens, pristine fairways, and a desert landscape give the golfer a fun and enjoyable experience. What’s special and unique about Club Campestre are some of the amenities they offer their owners and members; a stunning beach club just across the highway with a full service restaurant and beautiful pool. They also offer prospective buyers a full golf club membership with a purchase of a real estate product. Club Campestre has constantly offered new product and adjusted well to the market. Their full-ownership Pueblo Campestre starts at as little as $237,000 and their Hacienda Campestre fairway homes start at around $450,000, depending on floor plan and finishes. You can also buy a custom home lot and build your dream home, all within the gates of Club Campestre. Diamante – Pacific Side/Cabo San Lucas On the Pacific side of Cabo San Lucas, Diamante has continued to grow at a rapid pace. Most recently was the big news of the opening of Tiger Wood’s first golf course in Mexico, El Cardonal. This championship course is the second 18 hole golf course that Diamante has on property, the “Dunes Course.“ With an emphasis on the family experience, Diamante has built an amazing lagoon with a beach club, SUP classes, kayaking, and a brand new fitness center. Diamante’s real estate portfolio is expanding with many options at many different prices. Originally, they had offered custom ocean view homes at around $2,500,000, however, come Spring 2015 they will be introducing new products including townhomes, condos, and villas at under $1,000,000.

Any fine property in Baja defines itself by its interior design signature, its custom fine art and its own atmosphere. In Los Cabos, our most admired designers promote local artists and locate important art collections and work from different world renown Mexican artists. Since most homeowners have no time to travel and to supervise and follow up their projects, local designers specialize in following up the project and providing them with detailed information during the whole process, so owners can rest assured things are getting done on time and on budget.

Tiger Woods. Jack Nicklaus. Greg Norman. Davis Love III. The names of the designers of the most popular golf courses in Los Cabos read like a who’s who in the world of elite professional golfers. Responsible for the elevation changes overlooking the Sea of Cortez in Puerto Los Cabos to the dramatic dunes on the Pacific side of the coast, these men are equally liable for legions of choice words uttered after errant tee shots. Since I consider myself to be of adequate athletic ability, I gratefully accepted an invitation to participate in a Real Estate Broker’s Scramble at Querencia, a magnificent private golf club and residential community in San Jose. Being the studious type, I did a little research on the course to see exactly what I was getting into. The Championship Course at Querencia has 18 holes over 3000 acres and was designed by Tom Fazio, who won Golf Digest’s “Best Modern Day Golf Course Architect” three times. Most recently, the course was named by Golfweek Magazine as the 5th best course in all of Mexico and the Caribbean - a huge honor. Fazio was quoted as saying regarding the property, “Once I experienced this land, I knew it was an extraordinary setting for world-class golf. I’ve designed the golf course to maximize views of downtown San Jose, the Sea of Cortez, and provide a fair balance of risks and rewards.” With the backdrop of the ocean and a perfect 78 degrees at the shotgun start, the day began brilliantly. It was somewhere around the eighth hole on Querencia’s front nine when I realized something was missing. I had a feeling in the pit of my stomach that you only get the moment you give the locked car door a final push with the keys inside. Checking my bag, every club was accounted for. There were less golf balls than when I started, but my partner surely must have borrowed a half dozen already, as golf partners often do. We had just left the second comfort station, a fully air-conditioned luxury snackshack with outdoor grill and spacious restrooms
conveniently placed every four holes or so. There, we were invited to eat and drink until we were sufficiently satisfied and went on our merry way. Hoping that I may have left my cell phone at the last comfort station, I pulled a quick u-turn. Just as quickly, my back pocket vibrated notifying me that one of my Facebook friends had invited me to play Candy Crush. I didn’t have the heart to tell my partner the phone had been located so I insisted we comb the comfort station anyway, and while there, snag another quesadilla and two bags of Japanese peanuts for future nourishment. Through rolling green hills and sparkling blue vistas, the mystery continued through hole 18. As we reconvened at the 60,000 squarefoot clubhouse for the awards ceremony and to enjoy margaritas over our tales of triumph, the scorecards were announced. Cheers and hoots of excitement could be heard as the victors celebrated. The sun set over another memorable evening when it became painfully clear, while the crowd dispersed and I waited in vain for my name to be called, that what I had been missing was any type of golf skill at all. It just goes to show that even on your worst Los Cabos golf day you will always feel like a winner! *
