des tinations - useful information - maps - top beaches - thing s to do

Los Cabos (the capes) is located in the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of four main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape. La Paz is the Capital of the state, however, technically it is not part of the municipality of Los Cabos. If you take a look at the Baja Sur map you can see that the highways and towns form a loop. The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet at the very tip of the peninsula. It's very clear when you're on the Pacific side; the waves are much larger and powerful and the winds are stronger. If you go further north along the Pacific side the climate and beaches are very different than on the Sea of Cortez. It's usually a few degrees cooler, which is very pleasant during the warm summer months. In the Pescadero and Todos Santos area, the sand is dark and fine and the color of the water is deep blue. The sand in Sea of Cortez beaches is coarser and the water is a lighter tone of blue. The beaches in La Paz and the surrounding areas are possibly the most beautiful ones in Baja Sur. The white powdery sand and the waist-high water create a spectacular shade of turquoise, the kind you see in postcards. The mountains meet the desert, the desert meets the ocean. The Sierra de la Laguna is a mountain range that lies at the southern end of the peninsula. Above 800 meters in elevation dry forests transition to pine-oak forests. The main climate of the region is arid to semi-arid, however, there are very fertile areas where local farmers grow a variety of fruits and vegetables, especially on the Pacific side. The aquarium of the world. These are the words that Jacques Cousteau used to describe the Sea of Cortez. It is said that eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of varieties of fish and mammals found their way into this “trap” and either stayed in its warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool bottom of the two mile-deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. In the months of January through March, Gray whales make their yearly migration from Alaska to give birth to their young in the shallow and warm waters of the Sea of Cortez. 4

Cabo San Lucas

This tourist friendly town, also just known as “Cabo,” is located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula and is full of entertainment for every age and liking. The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet at Land’s End, where you can observe the beautiful rock formations and the famous Cabo arch. In Cabo San Lucas you can find Medano Beach, the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area, an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night.

San José del Cabo

Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district as well as world-class restaurants. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride to explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.

The Corridor

The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 20 minute drive). Along this road you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, championship golf courses and beautiful views. Have your camera ready and make a roadside stop at the Costa Azul view-point for photo opportunities and a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut).

Todos Santos

Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José due to the breezes coming from the Pacific.

East Cape

People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, an eight fingered coral reef that offers outstanding snorkelling and scuba diving and turtle nesting on the beach. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and folks who just want to get away from it all.

La Paz

La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waist high water at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer.

Loreto

Loreto offers the best of both worlds for tourists who long to escape to an 'authentic-Mexico' with settings that take you back-in-time along with ocean activities that rival that of any other modern coastal city. In Loreto you'll find historic buildings such as the enchanting Mision de Loreto - a mission-style church that was built in 1697 as well as The Islands of Loreto which boasts Mexico's largest marine preserve where dolphins, seals, turtles and sea lions all play in the sea. For those who are partial to adventures on land; there is hiking, biking, and nature-tours that fill up a camera with pictures of radiant natural settings. Loreto is the perfect place for everyone from honeymooners to large families.

BAJA 101

Exchange rates - Dollars are accepted almost everywhere and you will get your change in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate.

Cash or Card? - Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted, but you often run into cash only places. Always ask beforehand and carry cash. Your bank will most likely charge you international transaction fees if you pay with your card.

ATMs - The easiest way to get pesos is to simply withdraw money from an ATM in Los Cabos. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate (best possible rate). Examples include Banorte, Bancomer, Santander, Banamex, and HSBC. Non-bank ATMs located in the street will charge higher fees. Some ATMs only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing and try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high fees.

Driving - Renting a car will allow you to enjoy the freedom of exploring Los Cabos. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there is some organization within the chaos. If you are pulled over by local police for committing a driving infraction, the standard procedure is for them to take your Driver’s License. You will then have to go to the Police Station to pay your ticket and pick-up your license. There are two types of gasoline: Magna, which is regular, and Premium. Lleno (pronounced yeno) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos is customary. ALTO STOP

Buying groceries - In Cabo San Lucas, Wal-Mart and Costco are good options and easy to get to. You can always find a taxi outside of these stores. San José has a Wal-Mart and Mega. If you just need to grab something quickly, OXXO stores are small, reasonably priced convenient stores located all over town.

Everything you need to know about Baja Sur

5

BAJA 101 make an effort to arrive early; snorkelling visibility is often better in the mornings, you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours and, if you beat the crowds, you’ll be guaranteed a palapa to yourself for much-needed shade. Bring snorkelling gear!

SANTA MARIA

Must-see beaches in Los Cabos

Santa Maria offers a stunning horseshoe cove with coarse coral-colored sand and abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkelling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family-friendly beach is relatively secluded; therefore, you rarely run into beach vendors. Location: Travelling west from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the sign which reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. Tips: Santa Maria has brand new palapas and a wooden walkway. Swim from the shore towards the rocks on the right side of the beach for a great snorkeling experience.

San Jose del Cabo Cabo San Lucas MEDANO

If you’re looking for the action, here it is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2-mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars, right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and familyfriendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. Numerous activities and water sports are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the best spot to do it. Its stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see. Location: In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. The beach is accessible by foot through the east side of the marina or via Avenida del Pescador. Tips: Be prepared to be approached by souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “No, gracias.” Prices don’t vary much from one water sports rental place to another. Visit Lover’s Beach while you’re there.

LOVER’S BEACH

Getting there is an adventure in itself, due to the fact that it is reachable only by boat or kayak. The easiest way is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Prices are around $15.00 USD per person. Ask your captain to cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Once you arrive, 6

www.DestinoLosCabos.com

you’ll notice the striking rock formations and caves. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean; the locals call this Divorce Beach. This side is very dangerous for swimming because of the powerful undertow, so swim on Lover’s Beach only. Location: Land’s End beside the famous arch. This beach is accessible only by boat. Tips: There are a couple of vendors who offer beer and water, but you won’t find any other services. A good idea is to spend the day at Medano Beach and take an hour or two to go to Lover’s Beach; this should be time enough to explore this natural wonderland.

Along the Corridor CHILENO

Chileno is a very popular location for snorkelling, swimming or just spending the day under the newly-installed palapas. You’ll find tide pools at the east end of the beach and beautiful reefs offering excellent snorkelling and scuba diving. This is the only beach with public restrooms and it has plenty of palapas for shade. Location: Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near Km. 14 of the main highway. Tips: If you visit Chileno on a weekend,

PALMILLA

Palmilla beach is known for its family-friendly calm waters and a mile-long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes, the One&Only Hotel and the world renowned Jack Nicklaus Ocean Nine golf course. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter, but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis. Location: Take the Palmilla ramp exit at Km. 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel. Tips: Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa, or bring your own umbrella. No services are available here.

COSTA AZUL

If what you’re looking for is a good surf spot you can find it here without driving out of town. Head over to Zipper’s for a surf session and lunch and beers at the restaurant. To the west of Zippers is Acapulquito beach where the Cabo Surf Hotel and

Mike Doyle Surf School are located. You can find surf shops in the area where you can rent surf and stand-up paddle boards and set up lessons. The surf is bigger during the summer, and in the winter this is a good spot for snorkelling and swimming. Location: Exit into the arroyo at Km. 28 via the Costa Azul Bridge. Tips: Swimming with caution is possible in this area but keep an eye out for surfers.

LA PLAYITA

La Playita (the little beach) is a long stretch of beach where you will often find locals fishing from the shore and families with children enjoying the beach-front playground. On the right end of La Playita you can find a roped-off swimming area just outside the entrance to the beautiful Puerto Los Cabos 500slip marina. To the left is the natural open beach where you can swim, skim-board and enjoy a peaceful beach day away from the crowds. Location: Follow the signs to La Playita/Puerto Los Cabos from Boulevard Mijares in downtown San José del Cabo (across from the fire department). Tips: You will find new and wellmaintained bathrooms, palapas and fishing charters. There are no food services directly on the beach, but several casual restaurants in the surrounding area.

Pacific Side CERRITOS

Cerritos beach is a popular surf spot and swimming here is relatively safe. The scenic 45-minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant is a perfect spot to spend a relaxing day, maybe even get a massage on the beach. If you want to be active, you can take a surf lesson at Baja Surf Camp or rent surf and boogie boards at the Costa Azul Surf Shop. Location: Exit at Km. 66 of the Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos Highway. Watch the markers and look for the signs. Drive about 1.7 miles to the beach area. Tips: Lounge chairs, restrooms, food and drinks are available at The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant. The ocean currents are strong and the waves can be quite powerful on a big day, so swim with caution.

BOATING & FISHING

With calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather, some may argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa María Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, there are endless options to fit your needs.

BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are several charter companies that can accommodate your needs. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour of the landmark arch, a few hours of fishing, and a cruise to one of our beautiful bays for a swim. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the biggest difference between a yacht and a fishing boat rental is the cost. Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers, pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option. Cruisers accommodate larger groups and are more comfortable when the sea is rough on a windy day. THE MARINAS Marina Cabo San Lucas The area’s largest commercial marina features 380 slips and accommodates vessels of up to 375 feet. Amenities include 24-hour security, electricity and potable water, a fuel dock, and convenient laundry and shower facilities. Puerto Los Cabos Located in La Playita just north of San José del Cabo is the newest marina in the area with 200 available slips for boats up to 400 feet. Amenities are 10

www.DestinoLosCabos.com

SEASONAL FISHING CHART

similar to Marina Cabo San Lucas, though the boatyard’s 150-ton travel lift can accommodate larger vessels. FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate, no matter what your level of fishing experience is. What to Expect Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or these amenities can be added at an additional cost. It is better to leave early; trips usually begin at 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. It is customary to leave the crew a gratuity of 15% to 20%. Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait, you may buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire may also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

SNORKELLING & SCUBA DIVING

Prepare yourself for an incredible show of nature as you swim side by side with colourful schools of fish, eels, rays, octopus, sea turtles and more. The Sea of Cortez or the “Aquarium of the World” offers many opportunities to experience incredible underwater wildlife.

SCUBA DIVING DESTINATIONS Note: travel time is from the Cabo San Lucas marina. Land’s End Intermediate-Advanced - 50’-60’ Five minutes by boat and you can share the water with sea lions and moray eels, with a sunken boat visible in the Falls. Sand Falls Beginners - Advanced - 30’-100’ Steep sand banks drop sharply into a canyon filled with tropical fish. The canyon runs from the depths of the Cabo San Lucas bay to within 30 feet of the beach. Pelican Rock Beginners - 25’-80’ This large rock attracts many tropical fish and is only five minutes from shore. Neptune’s Finger Advanced - 80’-100’ A spectacular canyon wall dive. Cabeza de Ballena Beginners - 20’-40’ A 25-minute boat ride leads to a dive through large boulders with many fish. Santa María Cave Beginners - 20’-40’ Reachable from the shore or a 35-minute boat ride, the entrance to Santa Maria canyon has a huge variety of fish which feed right from your hand. Chileno Beginners - 30’-70’ This location offers parking, sea turtle sightings, tropical fish, and night dives over a sandy and rocky bottom following a 35-minute boat ride. El Gavilán Intermediate/Advanced - 70’-100’ This rocky ledge leads into a canyon where groupers and larger fish are often sighted; 35 minutes by boat. Blow Hole Beginners/Advanced - 30’-70’ 35-minutes from San Lucas, or just 10

minutes from Chileno beach, this dive offers rocky valleys presenting a variety of fish. Las Salinas Beginners - 30’-45’ - A sunken Japanese fishing boat attracts a large assortment of fish at this beginners’ dive; about 80 minutes from Cabo San Lucas or one hour from La Playita. Gordo Banks Advanced - 110’-120’ - A seamount provides views of marlin, hammerheads, skip jacks and at times huge manta rays; one hour from La Playita. Cabo Pulmo Beginner-Advanced - 30’-100’ A one hour drive east of San José or five minutes by boat and you’ll find the only living coral reef in the Sea of Cortez. SNORKELLING SPOTS Cabo offers several methods for snorkelling. You may drive to a local beach and swim out, book a tour with one of the many popular companies, or charter a private boat. Tours are typically two or three hours. Stay away from the Pacific side of the peninsula; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports. Pelican Rock

A quick five-minute ride from the Cabo San Lucas marina or Medano Beach is all it takes to get to this fish-attracting rock.

Lover’s Beach This popular and uniquely-named beach is accessible only by boat. Be on the look-out, however, as the water is not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Bay Snorkel tours regularly visit Santa Maria Bay. If you choose to drive there, it’s an easy swim from the shore to the reef on the right side of the cove. Chileno Bay Snorkelers will find a safe, roped-off area for swimming at this common tour destination. Cabo Pulmo A Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkelling in the area. This eightfingered coral reef is about a 2-hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it!

GOLFING

From Tiger Woods to Nicklaus and Fazio, many of the big names in golf have designed courses on this unique landscape. CABO REAL The newly renovated Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed golf course is one of the Corridor’s first championship courses and boasts beautiful views of the Sea of Cortez, elevation changes, and has hosted two PGA Senior Slams. 18 holes, Par 73, 7,461 yards. STAND UP PADDLING

There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just a paddle and a board. Stand up paddling is a great way to see marine life and to get a great workout and while enjoying nature. At Medano beach you can rent boards in several locations. Certain companies offer paddling lessons and some have yoga classes on the board. Tips! • Your feet should be parallel, about hipwidth distance apart, centred between the board rails (edges). • Keep toes pointed forward, knees bent and your back straight. Balance with your hips and core. Keep your arms straight and twist from your torso as you paddle, you have more strength in the abdominal muscles than in your arms. Your gaze should be level at the horizon and avoid staring at your feet. • If you’re paddling on the right, your right hand is lower and on the paddle shaft. Your top left hand is on the top of the grip. The elbow (angle) of the paddle faces away from you. • Plant the paddle by pushing the blade all the way under the surface, pull it back to your ankle, then out of the water. To go in a reasonably straight line, paddle about 4 or 5 strokes on one side, then switch to the other. When you switch sides, you’ll reverse hand positions. • When you fall aim yourself to the side so you don’t fall the board.

This sport is most popular in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (the north-east side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kiteboarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than in La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December. Every January the Lord of the Wind tournament takes place in La Ventana.

Have you ever had a dream about flying like Superman or maybe swimming like a dolphin? Dreams can come true in Cabo! The FlyBoard is a device connected and powered by a personal watercraft, which allows propulsion underwater and in the air. Users are connected to the board by wakeboard boots, under which, water pressure provides thrust. A certified trainer controls the power and height and you control all the movement. Available at Medano beach or in the Puerto Los Cabos Marina in San José del Cabo.

LA BOCANA AT THE ESTUARY Level: All levels. Direction: Right, left. Location: San José del Cabo’s main beach, close to the Holiday Inn.

SEASONS June through November The summer months are known to be the best as the Southern Hemisphere’s swells send great waves to the Pacific, Cabo San Lucas, San José and the East Cape. December through February East Cape and Costa Azul are on the flatter side. The Pacific can be good this time of year because it’s exposed to the west swell. March through May This is the windy season. Swells are consistent and you’ll run into fewer crowds.

ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES Parasailing, Bungee Jumping, and Ziplines There are several adventure parks in Los Cabos where you and your kids can experience zip-lining, backcountry ATV tours, a camel safari, and more. Zip-lines are appropriate for kids of 8 years and up and be prepared to hike from 5 to 15 minutes from line to line. Most companies include transportation. Ask your concierge to set-up your adventure. If heights over land are not right for you, try a parasailing trip and gain some altitude to enjoy beautiful views of Cabo while tethered firmly to a speedboat!

Buggy, Atv, Or Bike Rentals There are several local companies which offer ATVs, buggies, and other off-road vehicles for trail and beach cruising. Strap on some goggles and hop behind the wheel of one of these off-road racers for an afternoon of fast-paced fun! Vehicles include typical ATVs or enclosed rail buggies or RZR ATVs. Tours are typically three hours, and drivers must be 16 years of age with a valid drivers’ license. If pedal-powered rides are more your speed, look into renting a mountain bike, beach cruiser, or joining a guided bicycle tour of town. Just make sure to wear a helmet! Horseback Rides, Nature Walks, and Bird Watching Los Cabos (particularly San José del Cabo) offers a number of horseback excursions for all ages. Saddle up for a sunset guided beach ride, venture up a hidden canyon trail, or just sit back in the shade while experienced horse trainers give the kids lessons in horsemanship – there’s something for everyone! San José also boasts a natural estuary and nature preserve. Enjoy a peaceful, self-guided nature walk to observe some of the lushest landscape in the area. Species of flora and fauna are abundant: dozens of species of cactus, lizards, and birds can be spotted on this solitary walk, just a few minutes from downtown. Cactus-lovers may also want to check out the nearby cactus gardens Wirikuta, offering a large variety of cacti laid out in an artful outdoor setting.

Wet Fun Water Park Located about 20 minutes from San José, this water park has shallow pools and small slides for young children, water mushrooms, a pirate ship and a giant bucket that dumps water on the bystanders bellow. For the adrenaline seekers, several fast and large slides stand tall and mighty and offer a great view of the beautiful surrounding mountains. To get there take HWY 1 north from the San José International Airport towards La Paz and East Cape. After about 15 miles, the exit for Caudaño and the water park will be at km 66. Follow this road for a few minutes and you will find the park on your right. Turtle Release Every year, several species of endangered sea turtles nest in the warm sands of Los Cabos. Your family will have the opportunity to help these fragile and tiny creatures make it safely into the sea. Children will learn about the importance of conservation and they will surely enjoy the experience of helping these little friends. Sol de Mayo Waterfall Cascade Located about an hour and a half away from Los Cabos, the Sol de Mayo Oasis is yet another natural beauty of the Southern Baja California region. The hike leads the adventurous to a majestically beautiful oasis where everyone can swim and even dive into the cool, serene waters. Be sure to pack a lunch, and take plenty of water. There are plenty of signs to guide everyone to this wonderful piece of paradise. After arriving in Santiago, turn right up the little hill towards the town square. The cost is $6 US per person to access the easy hike to the clear-water falls. Everything you need to know about Baja Sur

WHALE FACTS In its lifetime – that’s about 40 years – a gray

WHERE'S the

WHALE? monthly whale watching report by Frankie Grant, Marine Biologist at Cabo Trek Tours www.cabotrek.com

MAGDALENA BAY: BAJA’S MEGAFAUNA HAVEN. For adventurers looking to escape the hustle of Cabo, look no further than the wildlife haven of Magdalena Bay. The mangrove-lined lagoons of Magdalena are home to over 250 species of birds, wild coyotes, dolphins, and the trip highlight, gray whales. Lopez Mateos is one of two fishing villages on the bay. Large stands of orange trees lining the highway and street lights topped with osprey nests signal your arrival. One of the local hotels will welcome you in for a siesta before you head to the lagoons for the real action. The fishermen in Lopez Mateos care immensely about the mangroves and gray whales, working together to protect this special haven. Gray whales make their way to these lagoons every year. They travel over 12,000 miles each year roundtrip from the Arctic Circle in search of calm waters for calving. The shallow lagoons are usually warmer than offshore waters and are perfect for the calves to feed, swim, play and gain strength for the long trip back North. These curious creatures will sometimes come right up to the side of a boat, allowing guests to pet them and even kiss them! It is said they enjoy this interaction due to the itchy barnacles they have growing all over their head. If petting the whales is not enough, there is plenty of other life to see as playful dolphins and sea lions can be found frolicking with the whales. Coyotes can be seen to the east scavenging fish on the sand dunes, while pelicans and herons dive for baitfish throughout the mangroves. All these interactions make Lopez Mateos one of the best locations to encounter wildlife in all of Baja California Sur. If you have an extra day to explore Baja, do not to pass up the chance to visit Magdalena Bay and its playful gray whales! *

whale travels a distance that is equivalent to going to the moon and back! Some travel a roundtrip of between 16,000-20,000 km (10,000-12,400 miles) every year between their winter calving lagoons in the warm waters of Mexico and their summer feeding grounds in the cold Arctic seas.

Do whales sing?

Gray whales lack vocal cords but do have a voice. They produce sounds by forcing air from their nasal passages into sacs, without exhaling any air.

Whales’ brains sleep one half at the time. Only one half of their brain will sleep at a time. This is the only way that they are able to get the amount of rest that they need and still take care of basic functions, such as breathing, that is necessary for their bodies to survive.

FISHING REPORT

All that’s fishy from Land's End to La Paz by Gary Graham “Whale Ho!” is not an uncommon cry this time of the year as both humpback and gray whales can be seen frolicking well within the sight of land. The humpbacks are particularly awesome as they leap nearly their full body length out of the water. Yellowfin tuna, mostly the smaller variety sometimes referred to as “footballs,” seem to have invaded both the Pacific and Sea of Cortez waters. Always a welcome quarry, pound-for-pound they put on impressive fight, and in addition, they are very tasty when fresh caught. Be careful though, there have been a few caught that were much larger -- approaching 250-pounds or so. One took over five hours recently to subdue. Dorado are another table-friendly species though in fewer numbers, they are a possibility for both inshore and offshore anglers. Unlike the tuna, dorado often put on a colorful aerial show when hooked to the delight of both anglers and spectators alike. Speaking of altitude and attitude, the billfish while still in the house, are just a tad scarce recently. Don’t despair. There are enough showing up between the tuna and dorado bites to make your fishing day more exciting. Wrapping up the local scene, the inshore surface action has been “jacks or better,” with the colorful roosterfish putting on an unseasonal winter (well, winter to us) show. Looking like punk rockers with their black and white stripes adorned with a roosterlike dorsal fin slashing through a bait ball is a surefire adrenalin starter. Skipjack and jack crevalle along with amberjack are the other players in this inshore melee. Just as they had been in Cabo, the yellowfin tuna are on most of the banks when weather permits and dorado are even scarcer; the few caught were in the 10-pound range. In spite of the wind, water clarity remains good and striped marlin seem to be content in the cooler water as long as the bait supply holds out. Remarkably there are still a few wahoo being landed occasionally along with their smaller counter parts, sierra mackerel, a popular ingredient of most local ceviche recipes. Prospects for anglers now seem promising, for not only might they land a catch of a lifetime, they might also get a glimpse of one of the largest mammals on the planet.

The humpbacks are particularly awesome as they leap nearly their full body length out of the water.

LOCALS' FAVORITES THE PASTOR TACO CHALLENGE: In Cabo San Lucas there are a few blocks known as Taco Row. The challenge is to try one pastor taco at each place and then pick your favorite! Taco Row is on Lazaro Cardenas street, between Los Milagros and Vicente Guerrero. Locals' favorite: order your pastor taco with pi単a - pineapple. The combination of flavors is very unique. FISH: Ask what the freshest catch is, this way you will most likely be eating a fish that was in the water earlier that day. Los Cabos has some of the best sushi you'll ever try, especially the sashimis. Locals' favorite: Serranito tuna sashimi. The fresh tuna will melt in your mouth! SEAFOOD: Restaurants often run out of seafood such as clams, scallops and oysters, until they bring more the next day, which proves the freshness of our local seafood! Locals' favorite: almejas - live clams. How to eat an almeja: squeeze some lime, add a little bit of salt and a few drops of your favorite hot sauce. PICANTE! Mexicans like to put salsa on... pretty much everything. Fresh salsas go well with cooked food such as tacos, enchiladas, etc. For fresh seafood, bottled hot sauce is more commonly used. Locals' favorite: at most taco shops you can find avocado salsa, it's like guacamole and salsa in one! Habanero and chile de arbol are the hottest chillies. Beware! AUTHENTIC MEXICAN FOOD: For the most authentic Mexican flavors venture off the tourist areas. Only a few blocks from the main tourist drags you will find fondas (small restaurants), food stands and even restaurants in people's homes. Locals' Favorite: tacos de canasta basket tacos, are a specific kind of taco that is stored in a cloth-covered basket (and they get better as they sit), although nowadays many vendors use a cooler as a more efficient storage alternative. The idea of Spring Break in Los Cabos typically conjures images of bright beaches and clubs packed with partying coeds. With miles of beautiful sandy beaches, thumping beach clubs and a thriving nightlife, Cabo does not disappoint in this regard. Yet there are more attractions here which appeal to different types of travelers. Whether you’d like to spend your vacation walking on the beach or tearing through the desert on an ATV, whether you are a discerning wine drinker and gourmand or if micheladas and street-side tacos are more your style, you’ll find something to suit your taste.

For the Adventure-Seeker: Some people are content to spend their vacation lounging poolside, taking in sun and sipping drinks. Others prefer a more exploratory approach, searching for experiences and activities unique to the area, and Los

20

www.DestinoLosCabos.com

Cabos has many options to offer these people. View Cabo from the air, buzz through an arroyo on a high wire or on wheels, hike the back country on two legs or four – choices are plentiful for the adventure-seeker on spring break. Cabo offers some incredible aerial views on the flight in, but the real fun is had closer to the ground! Cabo Sky Tours provides breathtaking vistas as you and your pilot buzz over the Sea of Cortez and Cabo San Lucas in an ultralight aircraft. If an ultralight tour is a bit too extreme, try parasailing on one of a number of parasailing boats available for hire. You’ll get a view from above while still being safely tethered to a boat below. On the other hand, if heights are your thing, join Skydive El Sol for a unique vista as you leap from an airplane at 12,000 feet and freefall for nearly a minute before a peaceful ride down to the beach. The Baja landscape provides a unique desert landscape for exploration, and several canyons in the area are home to adventure parks. These exciting parks offer high-speed zip lines, rappelling trips, giant swings… even bungee jumping! Horseback and camel safaris are also available from several tour companies, offering knowledgeable guides and a memorable experience bonding with your mount. If you are looking for something a little faster-paced, try an all-terrain vehicle excursion. Local businesses rent various ATVs – four-wheelers, Rhinos, and Xrail buggies – for multi-hour trips guaranteed to leave you dusty and grinning!

For the Nature Lover: The Baja has a diverse ecosystem and a beauty unique to the area. Travelers can find many ways to observe the local flora and fauna of Los Cabos, from up-close encounters with marine mammals to bird watching. One example is in the San José estuary, an approximately 125-acre protected region where dozens of species of birds, lizards, and plants can be spotted. For a different aspect, explore the estuary by foot, horseback, or even by kayak! One of the Baja’s most striking natural formations is the Sierra de la Laguna mountain range. This stretch of mountains bisects the lower portion of the Baja California Sur and offers visitors some incredible day hikes. The mountains are accessible via a number

of granite canyons which wind back and up, many punctuated by freshwater pools, waterfalls, and even a few hot springs. Pass through the small town of Santiago, a short drive north of San José, to visit the only zoo in B.C.S. The Agua Caliente hot springs, among others, are just a short drive away. One of the most popular natural tourist draws in the Baja is the high number of whales which migrate here each year. These spectacular animals can be seen spouting and breaching from the beach or hotel rooms, but whale-watching boat tours offer a real upclose experience. These tours last around an hour and a half and guests can typically spot whales, manta rays, dolphins, and other marine life within a few yards of the boat. For a real hands-on experience, try swimming with dolphins at one of Cabo Dolphins’ two dolphin centers, in San José and Cabo San Lucas. There are several packages available with varying degrees of interactivity, all guaranteed to provide an unforgettable time. An even grander experience can be found just north in the city of La Paz. Here, guests can charter a tour for the chance to snorkel among migrating whale sharks – gentle, plankton-eating giants which are the world’s largest known species of fish.

A different kind of view can be found in downtown San José on Thursday nights, during the San José Art Walk. Local artists and galleries welcome guests to peruse their works while sipping wine and walking through the beautiful downtown area. Stop in at any restaurant you pass for food, drinks and possibly even a live band. For some, simpler is better. And it doesn’t get much simpler, easier, or cheaper than the well-known Mexican staple – the taco. Tacos are the tortilla-wrapped vehicle for whatever meats, cheeses, and toppings you choose to add, and Los Cabos is rife with excellent taquerias. In fact, they are so numerous on Avenida Lorenzo Cardenas in Cabo San Lucas that the street is known as Avenida Taqueria! Try a “Taco Walk” when hunger strikes – just march up and down this popular thoroughfare and stop at any taco stand you choose and sample the endless combinations available. You won’t be hungry for long.

For the Foodie: Los Cabos has become a hub of worldclass dining, boasting cuisines from across the world. Traditional Mexican fare – particularly seafood – is incredibly popular and plentiful at local landmarks such as Edith’s Restaurant, Mi Casa, and Hacienda Cocina y Cantina. Among the traditional Mexican cuisine, visitors can find a number of excellent restaurants offering Italian dishes, sushi, steak, and fusion menus. Ask at many upscale restaurants for tequila and wine pairings, or visit Los Cabos Winery for a wine tasting and lunch or dinner. Visit Don Sanchez in San José to choose from their impressive wine collection, or try Pancho’s in downtown Cabo San Lucas to sample from what may be one of the largest tequila collections in the world, with over 500 tequila and mescal labels. In addition to incredible food, many popular Los Cabos restaurants offer stunning vistas. Try the Baja Brewing Company atop the Cabo Villas building for an amazing view of Medano Beach, or visit Sunset da Mona Lisa just outside of Cabo San Lucas, which offers one of the best sunset views in the area. For a great view of Palmilla accompanied by wonderful food and drinks, enjoy the 7 Seas restaurant at San José’s Cabo Surf Hotel. A bit farther inland, the patio at Huerta Los Tamarindos showcases their lovely organic farm below.

For the Water Sports Enthusiast: Spring break in Los Cabos means there are endless opportunities to enjoy the beautiful waters of the Sea of Cortez. The area offers world-class fishing, and there are dozens of boats available for fishing charters. Jet skis are available for rent along Medano Beach for a buzz around the bay or a closer view of the famous arch. Many beaches offer boogie, surf, and stand-up paddle boards for rent, and some beach clubs offer lessons for newcomers. Zipper’s beach in San José is a popular local surf spot, while beginners may find the long surf and soft sand at Cerritos Surf Colony, north of Cabo San Lucas, to be more forgiving. Scuba diving excursions are also a popular draw in Los Cabos. Need to get certified? You can do that, too! Several local companies

offer PADI certification courses, designed for visitors who are short on time. Guests can often receive a limited certification and be diving in as little as two days. Real thrill-seekers can try their skills on the flyboard: a fairly new water sport device akin to a wakeboard atop water jets. The power of the jets is controlled by an operator on an attached jet ski while the direction is controlled by the user, allowing one to fly into the air and be propelled under the water. If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to fly like a superhero, this may be as close as you’ll get!

For the Party Animal: Of course, no guide to spring break in Cabo would be complete without a nod to the party crowd! Cabo San Lucas has been known as a party destination for years, and during Spring Break, it more than lives up to its reputation. Libations flow freely every day along Medano Beach, where throngs of coeds, pumping music, and animated emcees hosting adult-themed competitions leave no doubt that Spring Break has come. During the day, Medano is the place to be. Farther up the beach is the everpopular and raucous Mango Deck, where you can join in drinking, push-up, and even booty-shaking competitions while the crowd cheers you on. Billygan’s and The Office offer comfortable, quieter spots to sip delicious margaritas and watch people. Spend a day visiting these and other happening spots along the beach to find the one that suits you best. Once the sun sets, the party continues in downtown Cabo. With a bar seemingly every few feet along the main drag, there is no shortage of options for nightlife. Ask around about ladies’ night; one can be found every night of the week, and taking advantage can save you a bundle if you plan to partake. The nightclubs and bars in Cabo are as various as the people. Do not miss the landmark Cabo Wabo for your classic-rock fix, or try Happy Ending Cantina to challenge your friends to a beer pong match. Mainstays like El Squid Roe and the Giggling Marlin offer rambunctious fun and affordable drinks. Live music can be found most nights throughout Cabo – just follow your ears. If DJs are more to your musical preference, popular nightclubs like Mandala and La Vaquita offer open dance floors and spectacular lighting to drive your dance moves. No matter where you start your night out, be prepared for a bar crawl – most places are within walking distance of one another, and your new favorite joint could be right around the next corner. *

SPOTLIGHTS

JASON DUFF & PAULINA VELA Owners of Cabo Flyboard Eight years ago, Canadian Jason Duff met Paulina Vela Padilla at the Grand Mayan resort in Puerto Vallarta, where she was in the middle of an internship through college. Jason and Paulina moved to Cabo together and opened their first business, Slush Up, at Medano Beach. At the same time, Paulina graduated college with a degree in business tourism and a fierce entrepreneurial spirit. As fate would have it, a brilliant new water sport came to life in France called FlyBoarding. Franky Zapata of Zapata Racing developed the FlyBoard and has since seen it's popularity explode. After watching one video, Jason and Paulina knew they had seen something special, so they made a gutsy decision to try something new and opened Cabo FlyBoard in April 2013. "It's ALL about customer service! People are here on vacation, they deserve the best possible service." Their mission is to make sure every customer has a blast, and this has kept the customers coming back every year. FlyBoarding is one of the newest and most unique extreme water sports in the world. Using the power of a Jetski to feed water through a 60 foot hose, the water blasts out of the bottom of the board, propelling the rider through the air or through water. Cabo FlyBoard is the world's premier water flight location and it's right in the heart of the scenic Bay of Cabo San Lucas. Cabo FlyBoard was one of the very first FlyBoard rental businesses to open in the world, placing the Cabo FlyBoard crew among the most experienced the sport has to offer. This family run business has become a resounding success with a mixture of hard work, professionalism, astounding customer service and a great crew. The unique experience they deliver has earned them much praise and prestige in the tourism industry and has ranked them as the #1 activity in the area for over 2 years on Tripadvisor.com. If you find yourself at Medano Beach, chances are you will see ProFlyBoarder Jason Duff showing off his tricks 50 feet in the air, or a valued customer learning how to fly for the first time. Some call living in Cabo 'perma-vacationing' and Jason and Paulina are often referred to as 'living the dream' because of that. Having a successful business anywhere takes a lot of hard work, but most days teaching people this new sport, and showing them a good time in Cabo is more like hanging out with friends. Location: Cabo Flyboard shop is located right behind Mango Deck and The Office Restaurant and their Flying location is in front of Cabo Villas and Hacienda Beach Club & Residences at Medano Beach. www.CaboFlyboard.com 624 1430146. It's no secret that Cabo San Lucas is legendary for partying and Spring Break—March through early April—takes it to a whole new level. It's also a great time to take a breather and make a difference while you're here. No trip to Cabo is complete without a visit to Bomberos Voluntarios de Cabo San Lucas, our local volunteer fire department. Stop by and meet the hardworking men and women and visit the store for a souvenir t-shirt. From fires, accidents and rescues to certified firefighter and lifeguard training, Comandante Carbajal and his team rely on public funding to keep you safe. Ask about the "bombertour" fire truck tour. It's a whole new way to party. For info and donations call: (624) 144 4884 or email comandantecsl@hotmail.com Play soccer? Cabo's kids love the game but not all have the luxury of soccer balls (or cleats). Pick up a few balls in town and get your game on in the sand at Playa Embarcadero. Take a water taxi from Mango Deck or The Office on Medano Beach, it's an easy walk back to Marina Boulevard. Or, visit the soccer field on Blvd. Constituyentes at the entrance to Cabo, beach side. If you're out shopping for supplies, why not spring for a few items the seniors at Club de Abuelos San Miguel could surely use? This day club assists vulnerable seniors and relies on the Cabo community (and you) to make ends meet. The Club provides meals three days a week, activities, medical services and more, all without government support. Join the monthly food drive and lend a hand. For a list of needed supplies and drop off points, email RobZolezzi@gmail.com Miss your pet? Take a break from partying and walk a homeless dog on the desert trails at the Los Cabos Humane Society's Animal Center. Or, make a lucky kitty purr in the cattery. The LCHS is Cabo's de facto SPCA, and relies on public funding for its spay/ neuter clinics, animal rescues and education programs. No time to visit? Be a pet escort for a fortunate dog or cat going to the US or Canada. Transportation costs are covered and you'll be met at your destination airport. The LCHS always needs food, litter, towels, blankets, cleaning supplies and donations. Make a difference and call cell 624-129-8346 or email volunteer@loscaboshumane society.com For more suggestions and nonprofits needing assistance, email sanjoseinfo@gmail.com

View art and enjoy a glass of wine as you stroll the enchanting streets of the Gallery District in downtown San Jose del Cabo. End your night with a dining experience at one of the many exquisite restaurants in the area. From the month of November through June, the Art Walk takes place every Thursday from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm, but the art itself never stops, the galleries are open all day, every day! The ever-growing Gallery District has become in recent years the cultural centre of Los Cabos with many high-end fine art galleries displaying original paintings, sculpture, photography, and jewelry made by local and international contemporary artists. Among these art galleries are shops housing the works by the top folk artists and artisans of Los Cabos and Mexico .

ART & CULTURE

Flavors of Baja

by Tadd Chapman While “spring time in Cabo” may bring to mind visions of drunken college students clad in neon, to some spring holds an entirely different meaning. Within driving distance of the head-splitting sounds of El Squid Roe and risqué “performances” at Medano beach, foodies look forward to a slightly quieter event, as some of Baja’s most flavorful produce takes center stage. While the climate in Los Cabos creates yearlong harvests, the month of March is especially known for the abundance it offers. Perfectly ripe strawberries, eggplant, zucchinis, tomatoes, lettuce, arugula and citrus you can smell from across the room (just to name a few) await you at the top tables in Los Cabos this time of year. With access to such fresh flavors, chefs up and down the peninsula are inspired to use these abundant offerings in new and creative ways. The fresh produce also serves as the perfect inspiration to mixologists, who craft exotic libations filled with bold and refreshing flavors. The start of spring also marks the start of yellowtail season. It is also prime season for snapper and grouper, and slices of freshly-caught Jurel begin to make appearances in sashimi dishes and in chef’s masterpieces. As I say, the best fish is the fresh fish from your local waters. The combination of vine ripened fruits and vegetables along with fresh fish creates a foodie paradise, which comes into full bloom with an abundance of ingredients available. It’s what makes Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo the perfect place to focus on local ingredients and farm-to-table / boat-totable cuisine. Our farmers, fishermen and ranchers know the perfect timing for every flavor and allow them to mature on their own instead of trying to speed up production. The result is something that only nature can produce, and something to which both our locals and visitors become quickly accustomed. To give you a taste of this concept, we invite you to visit the local San Jose or San Lucas farmers market to gather up some fresh ingredients for the following recipe; then you will see what spring break is really all about! The ingredient amounts can vary within this recipe to your liking, so feel free to play around with it and find the balance that works for you!

Arugula Pesto

2 cups x farm-fresh organic arugula 1 x cup farm-fresh organic basil 3 cloves x garlic ½ cup x pine nuts 1 cup (approx) x extra virgin olive oil ½ cup x Grand Padano or Reggiano cheese 1 tbsp x agave syrup Pepper SaltBlend all ingredients until smooth and toss over fresh pasta (I prefer organic brown rice pasta). Top with extra grated reggiano to your liking. Everything you need to know about Baja Sur

Ah...Spring Break. Two words with such resonance, heralding the end of winter and a break from the usual routine. So, while in Los Cabos, why not take a break from the usual spring vacation and see what the East Cape has to offer? Relaxation. Adventure. Isolated beaches. Whales galore. Not a lot of nightlife, since most of us run on solar power, but some great live music, and even full moon parties. Relaxation is a given here: you can’t hurry up as you drive along the dirt roads of the East Cape. The best plan is always to slow down and enjoy the view, whether that view be of the desert or of the sea. If your interests are more adventurous, there are ATV tours and horseback rides through the desert. For an unparalleled experience on and in the water, look to Cabo Pulmo. This small East Cape community is a longtime defender of the ecosystem. In the early 1990s, local fishermen turned to eco-tourism in order to conserve their coral reefs and the beautiful creatures inhabiting them. Only ten years after establishing Cabo Pulmo as a Marine Protected Area, it showed a 460% increase in the marine life population—a true success story in environmental recovery, bringing hope in times of climate distress. If you want to experience this astounding place, local tour company Cabo Outfitters offers a kayak-snorkel tour like no other. It’s a full-day and full-service tour, with experienced guides, small groups and customizable routes. If conditions are favorable, you will be able to kayak from bay to bay, even passing near a remote sea lion colony. After that, you’ll return to “refuel” with some of the best fish tacos at Cabo Pulmo’s beachside restaurant, La Palapa. For a different kind of East Cape adventure, Cabo Outfitters also offers hikes and jeep excursions that will take you to some of the waterfalls and hot springs around Santiago and Miraflores. If entertainment is what you’re looking for, look no further than VidaSoul Hotel in Vinorama, which will host David Raitt and the Baja Boogie Band on March 12, or Zac’s Bar and Grill in Los Zacatitos, where Gordo Bank will be playing danceable blues and rock on March 19. To find a full moon party out here, ask a local, or follow the howls. Sunny days, my friends, and moonlit nights. See you on the East Cape. For more information on Cabo Outfitters’ adventure tours, check out their website, www.cabo-outfitters.com. *

HIDDEN GEMS Camino del Cielo Shines by Gabriel Arcoleo

This month’s gem resides on the highest mountain in the coastal range that is The Lands End. A mile and a half back from the point in which the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez lays a magnificent vista of the Pacific Ocean for miles and a quick spin to the southeast reveals the city of Cabo San Lucas, the bay, and the Sea Of Cortez. The best time to hike is just after sun rise and just before sunset, right as the sun changes its shape and color with surreal shades of pink and orange. The road to Camino del Cielo or “Road to Heaven” can be hard to find, but a determined explorer should have no problem. You’ll want to start by driving down Lazaro Cardenas or Main Street. Go straight through town towards Land's End Mountain. Once you pass the City Museum, which will be on your left, continue up the hill on Lazaro Cardenas. After a roundabout you’ll see an OXXO store on your right; continue past this onto Boulevard Miguel Angel Herrera. The dirt road you’re looking for is Del Aguila and is located just before the exit to Quivira, which will be on your left. If you miss it as most do, turn around at Via Del Lerry. Once you’re on the dirt road of Del Aguila, you’ll want to drive a quarter mile up the hill. The large collection of cars parked on both sides of the road next to Villa Doroda Condominium complex is the target. The trail head is just up to the left from there. Be sure to bring your camera and something to drink. Be mindful and carry out whatever you bring in. The trail is fairly active and has just a couple of protocols to follow: keep to the right and smile at passing hikers with a friendly hola! *

Danzante Bay Annual Fish & Golf Tournament

June 29 to July 2nd Celebrate with us at the Islands of Loreto the most exciting sports in the world!

Whale watching tours offer up-close

encounters with Nature Add some adventure to the New Year with a once-in-alifetime whale watching experience through Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto, recognized by the World Travel Awards as Mexico’s Leading Beach Resort. Situated along the Sea of Cortez, which is otherwise known as “The Aquarium of the World,” Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto offers guests a chance to get up close with gray and blue whales as they migrate along the Pacific Coast each winter and spring. “We’re all about checking off your bucket list at Villa del Palmar at the Islands, and whale watching in The World’s Aquarium is one of those majestic moments that will stick with you forever,” said Owen Perry, Villa Group co-owner and president. Guests of Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto have two options for whale watching excursions during their stay at the “million star” resort, known for its star-laden sky, genuine hospitality, and incredible views of the Sea of Cortez and Sierra de la Giganta mountains. The first option includes an eight-hour voyage that kicks off with a scenic drive in an air-conditioned van across the Baja Peninsula to the Pacific side of Magdalena Bay called López Mateos, the ideal spot to get an up-close view of gray whales. Each year gray whales migrate nearly 4,000 miles on a journey from Alaska to get to Magdalena Bay to bear their young in warm placid waters. Once there, a knowledgeable guide will lead guests on a two-hour tour of the bay. Guests will learn about the

lifestyle and habits of gray whales and interact with them in a safe environment as they play, jump and float nearby, curious newborns by their side. After the excursion, voyagers are treated to a delicious, local lunch in López Mateos, a tiny authentic fishing village, before heading back.

Tournament Details: June 29: registration; June 30: golf tournament, second day of registration and kick-off cocktails. July 1: fishing. July 2: fishing and awards celebration dinner. Entry fee: $1,500 USD per team of 4 people. Includes: kick-off cocktail reception, awards celebration dinner, tournament polo shirt and cap, golf tournament (golf cart included). See our website for more details. 3 nights package starting from

For another adventure, guests can look for sei whales, sperm whales, belugas, humpback whales, orcas and the majestic blue whale (largest animal to have ever lived on Earth) right in the Loreto Bay National Marine Park with the resort’s Sea of Cortez Tour. Offered through Danzante Tours (the resort’s inhouse tour agency), guests can choose a four-hour island tour with whale watching included to Danzante and Del Carmen islands aboard a comfortable APEX boat. The excursion includes a picnic on the beach, with optional hiking, snorkeling and leisure time on the islands, as well as an expert guide who can describe the surrounding habitat and point out exciting sightings of dolphins, sea lions, exotic fish, and of course, whales. Whale watching season in Loreto runs from January to April, though whales are often closest to shore and the most active in February. Guests are recommended to bring comfortable clothes, sneakers, a light jacket, glasses, a hat, sunscreen, and mostly importantly, a camera to capture amazing memories, for both excursions. *

FARM to TABLE Did you know that Los Cabos has a significant farming community? Just north of Cabo San Lucas you can find the town of El Pescadero, where ripe mangoes that have just fallen from the trees lay on the ground and fertile land meets the Pacific Ocean. Commercial farming in Pescadero flourishes because of an ample supply of underground water funneled down from the mountains. Several farms are located in this area, where you can find fields with strawberries, coffee, chiles and more.

THE SUPER-SECRET NIGHTLIFE in LOS CABOS by Dane Posey

As a visitor, if you have ever been to Cabo San Lucas past sundown, you are aware of the world class clubs and dancehalls that rival the best in Las Vegas or Los Angeles. They send enough reverb through the thumping amplifiers that I consider layering undershirts to prevent any unflattering jiggle on those nights I have friends visiting from out of town. The party doesn’t really start until well-past 11:00 PM and starts to die down around the hour most normal humans are buttering their toast. In Los Cabos there is a trend to partake in a super-secret nightlife that revolves around an appreciation of the natural wonders of the area and the freedom we are given to respect it and enjoy it any way we choose. It is the draw of the Baja lifestyle that has attracted many men and women before me and will draw many more after I am no longer able to appreciate the gift. Want to share a sleeping bag and a sand pillow on the beaches of Pescadero while the waves lull you to dreamland with your partner? Do it. Catch a new release playing on a projector screen in the sand on the East Cape? Why not. Declare to the universe a goal you will fulfill for every shooting star you spot in the vast Baja sky any given evening? The world is yours. Due to the incredible dining and dancing options throughout Los Cabos, the common misconception is that the only “nightlife” choices in Cabo involve Cuervo and bacon wrapped street hot-dogs at 4:00 AM. I would be fudging if I said those didn’t happen from time to time and I have the mustard stains to prove it. Moonlit surf trips, the Sea of Cortez skinny dipping, the close calls with roaming cattle. Nightlife in Cabo can be raucous, riveting, and rewarding, all without leaving your backyard.* Everything you need to know about Baja Sur

IMAGINE you live here by Dane Posey

Q:

Real Estate questions asked by you, answered by local real estate expert Blake Harrington, of REmexico Real Estate Group

What is the closing process when purchasing a home in Los Cabos?

A:

There are thousands of Americans, Canadians, and/or Ex-Pats that reside in Los Cabos full time in their deeded full ownership property. The process of closing a deal on your next Baja dream home has continually improved over the years. While each transaction has its own characteristics, here's how it works in most cases and with our buyers at REmexico Real Estate Group. Deposits: Once the buyer and seller have come to an agreement on price and terms in writing, we categorize the property as "Pending" and/or "Under Contract". The initial deposit is usually between 5-10% of the purchase price, or as had been written and agreed upon in the Offer to Purchase submitted by the buyer, and delivered to an escrow account within 5-7 days of acceptance. Escrow: There are two commonly used escrow holders in Cabo. Stewart Title and Fidelity both have representatives locally and provide services for safe transfers of purchase or proceed funds for both buyer and seller. Each company, respectively, hold accounts in United States and Mexico so the principals/clients can determine which account best suits their needs. Our clients find piece of mind in using these well-respected escrow companies when purchasing a home and we do work hand in hand with the escrow companies on the closings of each deal. Title and Closing Time Frames: As we've discussed before in the Destino Magazine Q&A, the two instruments to hold title depend on your citizenship and status within Mexico. 1. For nationals of Mexico, they may use traditional title with "Escritura". This process is a quicker process where titles can be drawn up in as little as 30 days and closing thereafter. 2. For foreigners, the "Fideicomiso" takes a bit longer to draw up within the banks. So, this makes the closing process more of a 60-90 day process, with most closings happening around the 90th day. Notary and Closing: Once all paperwork, titles are ready for transfer, the buyers and sellers meet with their broker and attorney with a local notary to finalize the deal. At this point, funds are released and all legal documentation transfers are completed. Send us your Los Cabos real estate questions to: blake@caborealestate.com 30

If I were a betting man, which I have not been since the Cadillac MI County Fair of 87 when I lost it all in the milk bottle toss, I would wager that if money were no object your first choice in Baja Real Estate would be a beachfront property. The closer to the ocean, the better. What normal human wouldn’t want the only thing between them and the shimmering turquoise of the Sea of Cortés to be a bedroom screen door? To watch the whales migrating and playing from a window in their living room? To be able to spend all day with the most gorgeous views Mother Nature can provide for beach lovers? Beachfront property has always been a huge draw in the Los Cabos Real Estate Market and for those that have the means, it always will be. What about the rest of us of slightly less means? Not everyone has a gold coin swimming pool vault in their study where they practice the backstroke like Scrooge McDuck. Some of us never considered that the bottom row of milk bottles were made of lead and that offering the bicycle I had just picked up off of lay-away from Toys R US as collateral to attempt a “Double-or-Nothing” to re-gain my meager savings I had lost the previous sixteen throws was a decision I would forever regret. We deserve a little piece of paradise too. That is the beauty of nightfall in Los Cabos… The great equalizer. As the sun sets on another day of activity and the family returns home from spending time together snorkeling, splashing, and laughing, the coastline lights up. Those of us at higher elevations than sea-level enjoy the twinkling city-lights, the mountain outlines, and the desert stars and skies as far as the eye can see.

Across the board, Real Estate tours are almost always done during the day and during hours of sunlight. Nobody seems to mind that because we have more stamina when starting early and many developments, out of privacy and enjoyment for the residents, restrict tours in the evening hours. For this reason it is crucial that you always consider what your view will be when the sun sets and you are stepping onto the terrace to enjoy a glass of wine with your loved ones. Now before all of my beachfront clients call me frantically with orders to list their homes and head for the hills, let me assure you that the natural illumination from the Baja moon provides enough wattage to ensure these properties retain their magic during all hours of the day. What is even more magical is that in Los Cabos you do not need to spend a million dollars to have a million dollar view! *

San Jose del Cabo Festival Tradicional, March 14-19 The eight-day San Jose del Cabo Festival, celebrated in honor of the city's patron saint, San José (St. Joseph), begins on Monday, March 14 at 6:00 p.m. and will continue every evening until Sunday, March 22. The free admission gala event kicks off with live music held at the plaza in the heart of downtown. Carnivals and parades will be held during the two weekends of the event which, year after year, has been tremendously popular and successful, always drawing a good, boisterous crowd. The various food booths that can be found situated throughout the central downtown area will be serving up everything from fresh tamales to corn on the cob (with or without buttered, powdered chile), tacos, enchiladas, an assortment of sweets, and sugared pumpkin candies. The Festival is an annual family-oriented affair, which is one of the city's biggest street parties. The popular local event will also feature its annual rodeo as part of the eight-day celebration, which takes place at the corral across the street from the city's fire department, on the main street from the hotel zone into town. San Jose del Cabo's historic charm lies in the quaint, narrow streets and colonial buildings that comprise the city's intriguing art district. This area features exquisite ancient houses turned into pleasantly colored galleries, studios, tiny shops and really cool and scrumptious restaurants -- some of them with courtyards converted to pleasant seating areas. While the length of this year's "Festival Tradicional de SJDC" has been shortened by a few days, none of the popular events have been trimmed back, as the old school, ranch-style cockfights remain a must-see for locals and visitors alike. It is an event visitors look forward to attending every year.

Todos Santos Film Festival, March 16-22 For everyone visiting Los Cabos from March 16 - 22, the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful 40 minute road trip along the picturesque Pacific Ocean coast to Todos Santos will not end with just a tour of the Hotel California. Instead, it will include the rare chance to view short and full-length movies that are the showcase of the 13th annual Todos Santos Film Festival. "Made in Bangkok," written and directed by Flavio Florencio, will be one of the major films not to be missed at the TS Film Fest. The film's premise is about Morgana, a Mexican transgender opera singer with a dream: a sex reassignment surgery. We follow her odyssey all the way to Bangkok as she fights for the identity she has been struggling all her life to construct. Fina Torres directs the film, "Liz in September." The movie stars Patricia Velasquez, Mimi Lazo, and Danay Garcia. Pioneer photographer and historian Harry Crosby, is featured in the documentary “Work in Progress,” by Mexican Director Isaac Artenstein, who has captured on film Crosby’s photographic work of the Baja California Peninsula. Crosby recalls the more than 1,000 kilometer journey he took in 1967, tracing the original route of Portola (Loreto to San Diego, CA) to illustrate “The Call to California." Since then, Crosby has researched, written about, and extensively photographed the peninsula, publishing a large number of books. Artenstein will discuss in person his experiences making this film with Crosby, and will talk about this material as part of a larger project to make the historic corridor of the Californias recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Site. Sylvia Perel, director of the San Francisco Latino Film Festival and the Latino Festival of Redwood City, California, explains, "This fantastic festival brings together a terrific selection of feature films, documentaries and shorts from across Mexico and Latin America that many folks would otherwise never have the opportunity to see." There will once again be an entry from the city's "Youth in Video Program," which teaches select children of the Todos Santos area about film making. St. Patrick's Day Celebrations, March 17 Both Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo will be celebrating St. Patrick's Day with as much gusto as any restaurant and bar in America. In nearly every bar in either city, Irish menu items, Irish drinks and green beer will be on hand and readily available. In San Lucas, Cabo Blue has traditionally hosted some great St. Patty's Day parties, as does Baja Brewery, Cabo Cantina, Cabo Lounge, Tanga Tanga, Cabo Wabo, Solomon's Landing, Squid Roe, and Pink Kitty. In San Jose DC, look for a great time at Rock & Brews, and every local bar in the historic central plaza area. Visitors to Los Cabos can also expect their respective resorts and hotels to offer a St. Patrick's Day of their own. The Road House, which is located a few hundred feet from Costco, will offer their Irish corned beef and cabbage afternoon luncheon which has become a local and tourist favorite.

Benito Juarez Day, March 21 Benito Juarez Day is a national holiday honoring the renowned former president known as “The Lincoln of Mexico.” It is the birthday of the country’s most legendary and popular president, Benito Juarez, featuring dance, music and food in commemoration of one

of Mexico’s most honored heroes. In 1857 Juárez was elected president of the Supreme Court of Justice, a position he held until December of that year, when he became President of Mexico. From then until his death in 1872, he led the government during historically significant events including the Reform War, the French Intervention, the Second Empire and the Republic’s Restoration. Juarez was, in effect, Mexico's first president.
