Los Cabos (the capes) is located in the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of four main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape. La Paz is the Capital of the state, however, technically it is not part of the municipality of Los Cabos. If you take a look at the Baja Sur map you can see that the highways and towns form a loop. The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet at the very tip of the peninsula. It's very clear when you're on the Pacific side; the waves are much larger and powerful and the winds are stronger. If you go further north along the Pacific side the climate and beaches are very different than on the Sea of Cortez. It's usually a few degrees cooler, which is very pleasant during the warm summer months. In the Pescadero and Todos Santos area, the sand is dark and fine and the color of the water is deep blue. The sand in Sea of Cortez beaches is coarser and the water is a lighter tone of blue. The beaches in La Paz and the surrounding areas are possibly the most beautiful ones in Baja Sur. The white powdery sand and the waist-high water create a spectacular shade of turquoise, the kind you see in postcards. The mountains meet the desert, the desert meets the ocean. The Sierra de la Laguna is a mountain range that lies at the southern end of the peninsula. Above 800 meters in elevation dry forests transition to pine-oak forests. The main climate of the region is arid to semi-arid, however, there are very fertile areas where local farmers grow a variety of fruits and vegetables, especially on the Pacific side. The aquarium of the world. These are the words that Jacques Cousteau used to describe the Sea of Cortez. It is said that eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of varieties of fish and mammals found their way into this “trap” and either stayed in its warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool bottom of the two mile-deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. In the months of January through March, Gray whales make their yearly migration from Alaska to give birth to their young in the shallow and warm waters of the Sea of Cortez. 4

Cabo San Lucas
This tourist friendly town, also just known as “Cabo,” is located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula and is full of entertainment for every age and liking. The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet at Land’s End, where you can observe the beautiful rock formations and the famous Cabo arch. In Cabo San Lucas you can find Medano Beach, the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area, an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night.
San José del Cabo
Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district as well as world-class restaurants. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride to explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.
The Corridor
The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 20 minute drive). Along this road you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, championship golf courses and beautiful views. Have your camera ready and make a roadside stop at the Costa Azul view-point for photo opportunities and a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut).
Todos Santos
Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José due to the breezes coming from the Pacific.
East Cape
People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, an eight fingered coral reef that offers outstanding snorkelling and scuba diving and turtle nesting on the beach. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and folks who just want to get away from it all.
La Paz
La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waist high water at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer.
Loreto
Loreto offers the best of both worlds for tourists who long to escape to an 'authentic-Mexico' with settings that take you back-in-time along with ocean activities that rival that of any other modern coastal city. In Loreto you'll find historic buildings such as the enchanting Mision de Loreto - a mission-style church that was built in 1697 as well as The Islands of Loreto which boasts Mexico's largest marine preserve where dolphins, seals, turtles and sea lions all play in the sea. For those who are partial to adventures on land; there is hiking, biking, and nature-tours that fill up a camera with pictures of radiant natural settings. Loreto is the perfect place for everyone from honeymooners to large families.

Exchange rates - Dollars are accepted almost everywhere and you will get your change in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate.
Cash or Card? - Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted, but you often run into cash only places. Always ask beforehand and carry cash. Your bank will most likely charge you international transaction fees if you pay with your card.
ATMs - The easiest way to get pesos is to simply withdraw money from an ATM in Los Cabos. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate (best possible rate). Examples include Banorte, Bancomer, Santander, Banamex, and HSBC. Non-bank ATMs located in the street will charge higher fees. Some ATMs only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing and try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high fees.
Driving - Renting a car will allow you to enjoy the freedom of exploring Los Cabos. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there is some organization within the chaos. If you are pulled over by local police for committing a driving infraction, the standard procedure is for them to take your Driver’s License. You will then have to go to the Police Station to pay your ticket and pick-up your license. There are two types of gasoline: Magna, which is regular, and Premium. Lleno (pronounced yeno) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos is customary. ALTO STOP

Buying groceries - In Cabo San Lucas, Wal-Mart and Costco are good options and easy to get to. You can always find a taxi outside of these stores. San José has a Wal-Mart and Mega. If you just need to grab something quickly, OXXO stores are small, reasonably priced convenient stores located all over town.

BAJA 101 make an effort to arrive early; snorkelling visibility is often better in the mornings, you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours and, if you beat the crowds, you’ll be guaranteed a palapa to yourself for much-needed shade. Bring snorkelling gear!
SANTA MARIA
Must-see beaches in Los Cabos
Santa Maria offers a stunning horseshoe cove with coarse coral-colored sand and abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkelling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family-friendly beach is relatively secluded; therefore, you rarely run into beach vendors. Location: Travelling west from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the sign which reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. Tips: Santa Maria has brand new palapas and a wooden walkway. Swim from the shore towards the rocks on the right side of the beach for a great snorkeling experience.
San Jose del Cabo Cabo San Lucas MEDANO
If you’re looking for the action, here it is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2-mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars, right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and familyfriendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. Numerous activities and water sports are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the best spot to do it. Its stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see. Location: In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. The beach is accessible by foot through the east side of the marina or via Avenida del Pescador. Tips: Be prepared to be approached by souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “No, gracias.” Prices don’t vary much from one water sports rental place to another. Visit Lover’s Beach while you’re there.
LOVER’S BEACH
Getting there is an adventure in itself, due to the fact that it is reachable only by boat or kayak. The easiest way is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Prices are around $15.00 USD per person. Ask your captain to cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Once you arrive, 6

you’ll notice the striking rock formations and caves. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean; the locals call this Divorce Beach. This side is very dangerous for swimming because of the powerful undertow, so swim on Lover’s Beach only. Location: Land’s End beside the famous arch. This beach is accessible only by boat. Tips: There are a couple of vendors who offer beer and water, but you won’t find any other services. A good idea is to spend the day at Medano Beach and take an hour or two to go to Lover’s Beach; this should be time enough to explore this natural wonderland.
Along the Corridor CHILENO
Chileno is a very popular location for snorkelling, swimming or just spending the day under the newly-installed palapas. You’ll find tide pools at the east end of the beach and beautiful reefs offering excellent snorkelling and scuba diving. This is the only beach with public restrooms and it has plenty of palapas for shade. Location: Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near Km. 14 of the main highway. Tips: If you visit Chileno on a weekend,
PALMILLA
Palmilla beach is known for its family-friendly calm waters and a mile-long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes, the One&Only Hotel and the world renowned Jack Nicklaus Ocean Nine golf course. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter, but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis. Location: Take the Palmilla ramp exit at Km. 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel. Tips: Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa, or bring your own umbrella. No services are available here.
COSTA AZUL
If what you’re looking for is a good surf spot you can find it here without driving out of town. Head over to Zipper’s for a surf session and lunch and beers at the restaurant. To the west of Zippers is Acapulquito beach where the Cabo Surf Hotel and
Mike Doyle Surf School are located. You can find surf shops in the area where you can rent surf and stand-up paddle boards and set up lessons. The surf is bigger during the summer, and in the winter this is a good spot for snorkelling and swimming. Location: Exit into the arroyo at Km. 28 via the Costa Azul Bridge. Tips: Swimming with caution is possible in this area but keep an eye out for surfers.
LA PLAYITA
La Playita (the little beach) is a long stretch of beach where you will often find locals fishing from the shore and families with children enjoying the beach-front playground. On the right end of La Playita you can find a roped-off swimming area just outside the entrance to the beautiful Puerto Los Cabos 500slip marina. To the left is the natural open beach where you can swim, skim-board and enjoy a peaceful beach day away from the crowds. Location: Follow the signs to La Playita/Puerto Los Cabos from Boulevard Mijares in downtown San José del Cabo (across from the fire department). Tips: You will find new and wellmaintained bathrooms, palapas and fishing charters. There are no food services directly on the beach, but several casual restaurants in the surrounding area.
Pacific Side CERRITOS
Cerritos beach is a popular surf spot and swimming here is relatively safe. The scenic 45-minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant is a perfect spot to spend a relaxing day, maybe even get a massage on the beach. If you want to be active, you can take a surf lesson at Baja Surf Camp or rent surf and boogie boards at the Costa Azul Surf Shop. Location: Exit at Km. 66 of the Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos Highway. Watch the markers and look for the signs. Drive about 1.7 miles to the beach area. Tips: Lounge chairs, restrooms, food and drinks are available at The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant. The ocean currents are strong and the waves can be quite powerful on a big day, so swim with caution.

With calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather, some may argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa María Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, there are endless options to fit your needs.
BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are several charter companies that can accommodate your needs. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour of the landmark arch, a few hours of fishing, and a cruise to one of our beautiful bays for a swim. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the biggest difference between a yacht and a fishing boat rental is the cost. Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers, pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option. Cruisers accommodate larger groups and are more comfortable when the sea is rough on a windy day. THE MARINAS Marina Cabo San Lucas The area’s largest commercial marina features 380 slips and accommodates vessels of up to 375 feet. Amenities include 24-hour security, electricity and potable water, a fuel dock, and convenient laundry and shower facilities. Puerto Los Cabos Located in La Playita just north of San José del Cabo is the newest marina in the area with 200 available slips for boats up to 400 feet. Amenities are 10

similar to Marina Cabo San Lucas, though the boatyard’s 150-ton travel lift can accommodate larger vessels. FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate, no matter what your level of fishing experience is. What to Expect Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or these amenities can be added at an additional cost. It is better to leave early; trips usually begin at 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. It is customary to leave the crew a gratuity of 15% to 20%. Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait, you may buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire may also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

Prepare yourself for an incredible show of nature as you swim side by side with colourful schools of fish, eels, rays, octopus, sea turtles and more. The Sea of Cortez or the “Aquarium of the World” offers many opportunities to experience incredible underwater wildlife.
SCUBA DIVING DESTINATIONS Note: travel time is from the Cabo San Lucas marina. Land’s End Intermediate-Advanced - 50’-60’ Five minutes by boat and you can share the water with sea lions and moray eels, with a sunken boat visible in the Falls. Sand Falls Beginners - Advanced - 30’-100’ Steep sand banks drop sharply into a canyon filled with tropical fish. The canyon runs from the depths of the Cabo San Lucas bay to within 30 feet of the beach. Pelican Rock Beginners - 25’-80’ This large rock attracts many tropical fish and is only five minutes from shore. Neptune’s Finger Advanced - 80’-100’ A spectacular canyon wall dive. Cabeza de Ballena Beginners - 20’-40’ A 25-minute boat ride leads to a dive through large boulders with many fish. Santa María Cave Beginners - 20’-40’ Reachable from the shore or a 35-minute boat ride, the entrance to Santa Maria canyon has a huge variety of fish which feed right from your hand. Chileno Beginners - 30’-70’ This location offers parking, sea turtle sightings, tropical fish, and night dives over a sandy and rocky bottom following a 35-minute boat ride. El Gavilán Intermediate/Advanced - 70’-100’ This rocky ledge leads into a canyon where groupers and larger fish are often sighted; 35 minutes by boat. Blow Hole Beginners/Advanced - 30’-70’ 35-minutes from San Lucas, or just 10
minutes from Chileno beach, this dive offers rocky valleys presenting a variety of fish. Las Salinas Beginners - 30’-45’ - A sunken Japanese fishing boat attracts a large assortment of fish at this beginners’ dive; about 80 minutes from Cabo San Lucas or one hour from La Playita. Gordo Banks Advanced - 110’-120’ - A seamount provides views of marlin, hammerheads, skip jacks and at times huge manta rays; one hour from La Playita. Cabo Pulmo Beginner-Advanced - 30’-100’ A one hour drive east of San José or five minutes by boat and you’ll find the only living coral reef in the Sea of Cortez. SNORKELLING SPOTS Cabo offers several methods for snorkelling. You may drive to a local beach and swim out, book a tour with one of the many popular companies, or charter a private boat. Tours are typically two or three hours. Stay away from the Pacific side of the peninsula; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports. Pelican Rock
A quick five-minute ride from the Cabo San Lucas marina or Medano Beach is all it takes to get to this fish-attracting rock.
Lover’s Beach This popular and uniquely-named beach is accessible only by boat. Be on the look-out, however, as the water is not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Bay Snorkel tours regularly visit Santa Maria Bay. If you choose to drive there, it’s an easy swim from the shore to the reef on the right side of the cove. Chileno Bay Snorkelers will find a safe, roped-off area for swimming at this common tour destination. Cabo Pulmo A Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkelling in the area. This eightfingered coral reef is about a 2-hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it!

With the desert meeting the Sea of Cortez as a backdrop, there is no doubt why Los Cabos has become a championship golf destination over the years. From Tiger Woods to Nicklaus and Fazio, many of the big names in golf have designed courses on this unique landscape. This sport is most popular in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (the north-east side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kite-boarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than in La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December. Every January the Lord of the Wind tournament takes place in La Ventana.

ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES Parasailing, Bungee Jumping, and Ziplines There are several adventure parks in Los Cabos where you and your kids can experience zip-lining, backcountry ATV tours, a camel safari, and more. Zip-lines are appropriate for kids of 8 years and up and be prepared to hike from 5 to 15 minutes from line to line. Most companies include transportation. Ask your concierge to set-up your adventure. If heights over land are not right for you, try a parasailing trip and gain some altitude to enjoy beautiful views of Cabo while tethered firmly to a speedboat!
Buggy, Atv, Or Bike Rentals There are several local companies which offer ATVs, buggies, and other off-road vehicles for trail and beach cruising. Strap on some goggles and hop behind the wheel of one of these off-road racers for an afternoon of fast-paced fun! Vehicles include typical ATVs or enclosed rail buggies or RZR ATVs. Tours are typically three hours, and drivers must be 16 years of age with a valid drivers’ license. If pedal-powered rides are more your speed, look into renting a mountain bike, beach cruiser, or joining a guided bicycle tour of town. Just make sure to wear a helmet! Horseback Rides, Nature Walks, and Bird Watching Los Cabos (particularly San José del Cabo) offers a number of horseback excursions for all ages. Saddle up for a sunset guided beach ride, venture up a hidden canyon trail, or just sit back in the shade while experienced horse trainers give the kids lessons in horsemanship – there’s something for everyone! San José also boasts a natural estuary and nature preserve. Enjoy a peaceful, self-guided nature walk to observe some of the lushest landscape in the area. Species of flora and fauna are abundant: dozens of species of cactus, lizards, and birds can be spotted on this solitary walk, just a few minutes from downtown. Cactus-lovers may also want to check out the nearby cactus gardens Wirikuta, offering a large variety of cacti laid out in an artful outdoor setting.
Wet Fun Water Park Located about 20 minutes from San José, this water park has shallow pools and small slides for young children, water mushrooms, a pirate ship and a giant bucket that dumps water on the bystanders bellow. For the adrenaline seekers, several fast and large slides stand tall and mighty and offer a great view of the beautiful surrounding mountains. To get there take HWY 1 north from the San José International Airport towards La Paz and East Cape. After about 15 miles, the exit for Caudaño and the water park will be at km 66. Follow this road for a few minutes and you will find the park on your right. Turtle Release Every year, several species of endangered sea turtles nest in the warm sands of Los Cabos. Your family will have the opportunity to help these fragile and tiny creatures make it safely into the sea. Children will learn about the importance of conservation and they will surely enjoy the experience of helping these little friends. Sol de Mayo Waterfall Cascade Located about an hour and a half away from Los Cabos, the Sol de Mayo Oasis is yet another natural beauty of the Southern Baja California region. The hike leads the adventurous to a majestically beautiful oasis where everyone can swim and even dive into the cool, serene waters. Be sure to pack a lunch, and take plenty of water. There are plenty of signs to guide everyone to this wonderful piece of paradise. After arriving in Santiago, turn right up the little hill towards the town square. As whale watching season continues, folks are wondering why it seems less whales are around this year. Some scientists believe El Niño is the cause. Simply put, El Niño is a warming of waters in the eastern equatorial Pacific. This warming trend can change ocean currents, weather patterns, cause massive coral die-offs, and even change animal behavior. The El Niño event we are now experiencing is the largest in recorded history and has thrown a kink into the lives of the animals living in the Pacific. The problems start in Alaskan waters where whales feed during summer months. If food stocks are not plentiful due to warmer waters, whales may change their migration path and not reach the same wintering location as in previous years. The Humpback whales filmed feeding last month in La Paz also further supports this theory. This year’s El Niño event has been bittersweet thus far, with fewer humpback calves in Los Cabos waters, but many sightings of unique species. These include Risso’s dolphins, blue whales, pilot whales, killer whales, Bryde’s whales, grey whales and even a few elephant seals. Such sightings make this season an exciting time for both marine biologists as well as ocean enthusiasts looking to see what animals await in the waters of Cabo San Lucas. From the largest animal on earth, to schools of thousands of dolphins, to breaching humpback whales, to schools of leaping Mobula manta rays; the wildlife has not disappointed this season. All that’s fishy from Land's End to La Paz by Gary Graham Solar eclipse, El Niño and “bad juju” are all taking equal billing for the recent fishing slump plaguing both the Pacific and the Sea of Cortez. This might sound pretty dreadful, but please bear with me. Of the hundreds of fish found in the waters surrounding the tip of Baja, only a few handfuls are targeted on a regular basis. If the exotics like marlin, tuna, dorado, wahoo and roosterfish fail to bite, the sport fishing reports go negative or even silent. Last week, a first-time visitor sent me an email, excitedly relating what a wonderful day he and his teenage daughter had catching triggerfish on light tackle. He reminded me of how often visitors make the mistake of fishing only for the “exotics,” even when the odds are not in their favor. The inshore fishery is almost always a “go-to” option if the offshore isn’t producing. Currently, several varieties of skipjack, including black and white, are putting on a show close to shore. Both are fun to catch and the white skipjack is good eating. Small roosterfish and jack crevalle also have been a frequent favorite for anglers just looking for some fishing fun, as are sierra mackerel. Although smaller, they still fight like their larger counterpart, the mighty wahoo. Other common catches are several different varieties of pompano that can show up in the mix. Keep a couple of the sierra and ask your favorite restaurant to prepare a killer platter of ceviche with fresh-fried tortilla chips. Your ho-hum cocktail hour will suddenly become a Baja party to remember. Back to the aforementioned triggerfish -- usually caught near the bottom; now think perch on steroids with buck teeth and ugly. Often overlooked, they fight hard, and fresh-caught the fillets are considered to be some of the best eating fish by locals. Last but by no means least, is Baja bottom fishing. From 50 to a few hundred feet beneath the surface exists a world without sunlight -- home to a long list of Baja fish that seldom see the sun -- unusual creatures with a well-earned reputation of being tough as nails. Grouper, cabrilla, pargo and red snapper hang out in these rocky crevices, ready to dart out and snatch a big bait, then dash back into their lair before they can be stopped more often than not. As spring settles in, there is no doubt that the “exotics” will reappear. Meanwhile, don’t overlook the fun fishing that beckons just beneath the surface. Back to the aforementioned triggerfish -- usually caught near the bottom; now think perch on steroids with buck teeth and ugly.

The Legalities of Getting Married in Los Cabos By Michelle Suderman
If you plan to get married in Los Cabos, it’s important to know that for a marriage to be legal in Mexico, a civil ceremony is required in addition to any other ceremony you may be planning—religious or otherwise. This is true for everyone, Mexicans and foreigners alike, and the ceremony is performed at the Registro Civil or civil registry. Mexico has no provision for the temporary “ordainment” of a person to officiate at a wedding. Many people who choose to have a destination wedding in Mexico prefer to do the civil ceremony in their own country before traveling here. The civil ceremony in Mexico is a simple process, requiring a few documents. You’ll need fill out the application; provide originals and copies of the couple’s birth certificates, photo IDs and immigration forms (the originals will be compared with the copies at the office, and returned to you immediately); and have a blood test that must be performed at the government health centre no more than 15 days prior to turning in your paperwork. You will also need to provide copies of the photo IDs of four witnesses, who may be Mexicans or foreigners. Once your paperwork is complete, the civil registry will give you an appointment within a week of turning in your documentation. If you don’t speak Spanish, you have the option of hiring a translator, or you and the witnesses will be provided with a printout in English of what the judge will be saying during the ceremony. The cost is very reasonable: $1,500 pesos for the ceremony, $1,000 pesos for the two blood tests, and then probably buying lunch for your four witnesses. However, depending on where you are from, you may need to get further notarization for the marriage to be considered legal in your home country. Check with your local consulate for information.

Be sure to talk to your event planner to make sure you have everything you need. The process can take a lot of time, so plan ahead and make sure you have everything prepared well in advance.
WARDROBE If the groom or anyone else is planning to wear a jacket for the ceremony, it’s a good idea to pack an extra dress shirt (especially in the warmer months). If things are just a little sweaty, you can change into a fresh shirt before the reception. You definitely won’t want to have to keep that jacket on all night to hide the wet under arms. to give the extra shirt to your wedding planner to hang in a safe place during the ceremony and photos so you don’t have to go all the way back to your room.

Don’t rely on your phone for this, because the battery won’t hold up as long when you’re using the camera a lot. Most digital cameras can take better photos than most cell phones, too. You can also take many more photos, and they are safer on a sim card than on your phone. Plus, most cameras are more water resistant than cell phones, and your phone will be safer in your beach bag or hotel room if you’re going out to the beach or pool.
TRAVEL STEAMER This small, and light-weight tool is an inexpensive way to ensure that everyone is wrinkle-free for the big day. Many hotels will offer pressing services, but every time you move your wedding dress, you’re taking a chance on snags, dirt, stains, burns, and more. With a travel
steamer, you can give it a quick once-over fright from the room, and share it with others as well. You can order one on Amazon for under $30, and it will come straight to your house. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time for delivery before you depart.
NAIL POLISH Don’t take a chance on walking down the aisle with a chipped nail. Bring a bottle of your color of choice so that you can do touch-ups if necessary. If you’re having your nails done in your wedding destination you can still bring your own polish for the manicurist to use. Anna was born and raised in Sao Paulo, Brazil and photography was a family legacy. Her grandfather worked as a photographer for newspapers in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro for over three decades. It was her father’s 35mm Olympus OM-10 film camera that got her started and which she would use from high school through college. Anna used the film camera to mainly experiment, using outdated films, cross-processing and spending time in the darkroom. During her years at the School of Architecture and Urbanism at the University of Sao Paulo that camera became her constant companion. Her lens was pointed to the everyday life around her and that practice became heavily influenced by modernist architecture as well as graphic design, her major. Her life changed again upon meeting her mentor, wedding photographer Amy Bennett in Cabo. Anna found herself in what she describes as a fantastic world that results from the merging between the breathtaking sceneries and grand marvelous wedding celebrations. Four years went by and Anna is now an accomplished wedding photographer, having worked on over 100 weddings on her own or with other photographers, in Cabo, California and Brazil. During that time she developed a mixed style of photography, that blends documentary and editorial, while being extremely attentive to detail and comprehensiveness. Personal projects are an important part of Anna’s photography, such as Hurricane Odile’s photographs done on the days of the aftermath of the category 3 hurricane that hit Cabo in September of 2014. Anna considers her job a privileged one, for she gets an intimate view of a day in the life of her clients, a day that many dream about. Honeymooners! Do you know the origin of the honeymoon? There are several versions; one dates back 40,000 years to Babylon. The father of the bride would give the groom all the mead (a honey-wine brew) that he could drink for a whole month, or an entire "moon."

Another version claims that it was in Germany where the tradition started. The Teutons, a Celtic tribe, celebrated their weddings only under the full moon. After the event, the couple drank an elixir made with honey and wine for 30 days to enhance their fertility. This period came to be known as the Honey Moon. For the Scandinavians, a honeymoon meant to hide. During the times of Attila the King of the Huns, when a man kidnapped a woman from a nearby town, he would be forced to hide her for some time. During this period, the only one who knew where she was hidden was the “best man.” When the bride’s family stopped looking for her, the groom could then return to his town with his newlykidnapped bride. Whether the bride liked this tradition or not has not been passed down as a part of this story. So, this leaves us to assume that it was all about the wine brewed with honey. One might guess that they were so drunk and their intelligence so blurred as to think that stealing women was a sign of manhood. Crazy!

Steinbeck’s novel “The Pearl” about a pearl diver from La Paz was the first thought that came to mind after seeing Playa El Tecolote, this month’s gem. As with many of Baja California’s natural gems, you’ll have to hunt them out. Anyone that has ever searched for such precious spots knows part of the mystique and allure are their remote access and isolation. El Tecolote Beach is no different, it sits north east of the City of La Paz and is surrounded by mountains. On your way to Tecolote you’ll pass some of the most photographed beaches in Baja California. With the tip of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountain range to your right and the crystal clear Bay of La Paz on your left, the ride itself is magical. Just a 15 minute drive up highway 11 you’ll find the parking area and access to the beach. The beach is an amazing spot for swimming, sunning, beach combing and yes even camping. It is a long expanse of mostly white sand beach dotted with palapa style restaurants. The restaurants specialize in fresh sea food and serve some of the most amazingly tasting dishes in Baja California. Only at Tecolote can you see fisherman catching your dinner while you enjoy freshly made guacamole salsa. The beach is a local hot spot. During the summer months locals begin to fill up the parking lot around sunset. Nights of wading in the ocean with the moon above and live bands playing in the background is surreal and the reason many make the pilgrimage. During the day boats taxi visitors to and from Espiritu Santo Island just off shore and insight of the beach. As the day turns to night the restaurants at Tecolote turn into bars with characters found in Hemingway novels. A unique combination of intellectuals and artists, white shirts, facial hair and sun drenched faces converge on Tecolote nightly. A collection of dated straw hats, beer’s in tow, all with their own unique story’s reminiscent of tales from Key West’s Sloppy Joes in the mid 1950’s. Tecolote is special and the history, the land and its people are all parts of the reason I call this location, a hidden gem. *

I am officially way past my deadline, and have no idea whether my editor will accept this contribution, but I feel like I have to write it, if only for myself, so I can begin to process what just happened. You see, while I was supposed to be writing about weddings for Destino, I was also getting ready for my own big event, with nary a wedding planner in sight. Having never been married before, I was unprepared for it: “It’s just a big party,” I said to myself. But it isn’t, and it wasn’t. It is much, much more than that. It is, quite literally, a life-changing experience. Herb and I don’t tend to stand on formality, and we wanted something simple. We didn’t do much in the way of planning... at first. We knew that Mickey and Peggy were going to host it, that it would be held in the arroyo by their house, just off the beach, that Mickey was going to do the ceremony, and that Herb would be in charge of music. What else could we need? Turns out, we needed quite a bit. And quite a bit of help from our friends. First, there was Jan who took me dress shopping. After a couple of stops, we wound up at Pepita’s Magic of the Moon in Cabo San Lucas. I walked into the shop, and there it was, the perfect dress for a hippie chick like me: a long white shift dress with an asymmetrical translucent ombre layer over it in pale green. Elegant but not overstated, and within my budget. I also appreciated the fact that Pepita’s is a local company: all the clothing is designed and fabricated here in Los Cabos. Herb’s shirt was also easy: a beautiful white linen guayabera from Yucatán, purchased at a shop just off the plaza in San José del Cabo. That was on another day trip, this time with Peggy. We were trying to track down a local seafood taco place that had been recommended to us: El Tibirí. (It took some doing, but we were eventually successful.) My niece Marion was head of the decorating committee, and she had plenty of help from my sister Lynn and many friends in the community—too many to mention. There were colorful oilcloth tablecloths, Mason-jar centerpieces and vases on the stage, all filled with native flowers from our friends’ gardens. My brother Craig cut up scrap wood to make signs to lead people to the site, painted in festive colors by Marion and Lynn. My sister was also charged with attempting to keep me on an even keel—an impossible task as this “just a party” was starting to balloon, and I was starting to unravel. Of course, there were more mundane tasks, like ordering beer and portapotties. The people at the local bar and grill (Zac’s) gave me the direct number for Pacífico, because I was having trouble getting through on the website, and the woman at the other end of the line (Adela) set me up with tents, tables, chairs, coolers, ice—all included in the price of the beer. Everything was delivered on time and exactly as ordered. We also realized that the normally sandy arroyo had a layer of silt over it, and the whole wedding party would turn into a dustbowl if we left it as is. So we 28

hired the local heavy-equipment operator, Tomás and his crew, to scrape off the dirt and bring in more sand to spread around. Hard to imagine that Herb and I were paddling SUP boards around that same arroyo when it flooded in a storm a couple of years ago. After driving around putting up the signs with my brother the morning of the wedding, I had no time for anything but a quick shower and to put on my dress and sandals. Definitely none of the pedicures or hairdressing or makeup my sister and niece and I had planned, or the calming reflexology offered by Pauline. So much running around, and the moment had finally arrived. We drove over to Mickey and Peggy’s house. I spent a little more time trying to calm myself, and then my brother and I walked down the steps to the arroyo, where a crowd of people was waiting—all friendly, familiar faces, including Herb’s. That walk is actually a blur, though from the photos, I was grinning the entire time. I do remember the ceremony, very clearly. Standing in the sand, hand in hand with Herb. On stage, Mickey in his colorful pants and his “Herb says it’s cool” T-shirt, Peggy in a purple dress holding a beautiful parasol, Marion in her orange dress holding my bouquet. Friends all around us. Is there anything I would have done differently in hindsight? Plenty. More time with my family, less frantic organizing. But is there anything I would change about the wedding itself? Not a thing. We had a fantastic time, celebrating our love in the presence of friends and family. Everywhere I turned, I saw smiling faces. Laughter, joy, love, in one of the most beautiful settings I could possibly imagine. All the things that had been worrying me were secondary. As Nabokov wrote, “All the rest is rust and stardust.” The one thing I never had any doubt about was the person I was marrying, my best friend, Herb. And this oddball, DIY, semi-potluck, barefoot wedding was a perfect reflection of us as a couple. Maybe even of the eccentric and easygoing East Cape itself. It was also a reflection of how a community can pull together, in times of joy and in times of trouble. As Mickey said during the ceremony, “We’re an eclectic group—all here because we enjoy the beautiful, tranquil East Cape. And like a marriage, we’re bound together. When the doo-doo hits the fan, we come together as a community.” (Yes, he did say doo-doo at my wedding.) The truth is, every single one of us was affected by Hurricane Odile in 2014, but the storm and its aftermath also made us stronger as a community: it taught us how much we truly rely on one another out here on the East Cape, where we don’t enjoy all the amenities of town. Everything from getting a ride if your car breaks down, to forming a bucket brigade to put out a house fire, to making sure everyone is safe following a devastating hurricane. Our wedding turned into a celebration not just of two people, but of an entire community coming together. I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. *

by Dane Posey There comes a moment during every visit to Los Cabos where the thought enters your mind, “I could live here.” I know a woman it happened to after a day on the beach at Costa Azul in San Jose del Cabo. She had been surfing since sunrise at the wave known as La Roca. Ride after ride the Sea of Cortez kept providing her with opportunity. So inspired by her good fortune she chose to make the area her home citing that everything she needed was here. She bought a home on the beach where she could check the swell every morning from her breakfast nook and be in the water shortly after tea. I talked to a man that it happened to while dining at a restaurant after his youngest daughter’s wedding. He had been running his company for twenty-seven years and in that instant realized he had not been present for a lot of big moments in his children’s lives. Surrounded by his family and a platter of assorted tortas he decided to go house hunting the next day for the family vacation home to never miss another important moment again. They have gathered there for every major holiday since. 32

A couple told me about how when they were newly married and visiting on their honeymoon they found a flat rock to stargaze on in the East Cape where they swore they could see every star in the universe. Although they had never studied astrology, they were fairly certain it was all of them. Saturday April 23-Sunday April 24, Todos Santos Gastrovino Food & Wine Festival The newest installment of the Todos Santos Second Annual Gastrovino Food & Wine Festival will take place at the Baja California magical city located just 45 minutes north of Cabo San Lucas. The food and music event is a community fundraiser for the local fire department, which will be utilizing the money raised towards the purchase of urgentlyneeded vehicle and equipment upgrades and repairs. The unique gathering is a mix of live music, wine pairing, and delectably tasty five-course dinners. Nine wineries and 20 restaurants will participate in this year's

Saturday, April 30, Dia del Los Niños While not a national holiday in Mexico, El Dia de Los Ninos, or Children’s Day, is always a day filled with kid's activities and special events. Many schools celebrate the day and parents are invited. There are no classes or school on Dia de Los Ninos, April 30, and in San Lucas, parents will generally take their kids to Medano Beach; San Jose del Cabo holds a small parade and children's activities at the main plaza in front of the historic Catholic Church downtown. Children’s Day has been celebrated annually in Mexico since 1925. Children in Mexico are recognized as an important part of society, so the day focuses on the importance of loving, accepting and appreciating the young children of every community, city and state within the Republic of Mexico.
