des tinations - useful information - maps - top beaches - thing s to do

Los Cabos (the capes) is located in the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of four main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape. La Paz is the Capital of the state, however, technically it is not part of the municipality of Los Cabos. If you take a look at the Baja Sur map you can see that the highways and towns form a loop. The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet at the very tip of the peninsula. It's very clear when you're on the Pacific side; the waves are much larger and powerful and the winds are stronger. If you go further north along the Pacific side the climate and beaches are very different than on the Sea of Cortez. It's usually a few degrees cooler, which is very pleasant during the warm summer months. In the Pescadero and Todos Santos area, the sand is dark and fine and the color of the water is deep blue. The sand in Sea of Cortez beaches is coarser and the water is a lighter tone of blue. The beaches in La Paz and the surrounding areas are possibly the most beautiful ones in Baja Sur. The white powdery sand and the waist-high water create a spectacular shade of turquoise, the kind you see in postcards. The mountains meet the desert, the desert meets the ocean. The Sierra de la Laguna is a mountain range that lies at the southern end of the peninsula. Above 800 meters in elevation dry forests transition to pine-oak forests. The main climate of the region is arid to semi-arid, however, there are very fertile areas where local farmers grow a variety of fruits and vegetables, especially on the Pacific side. The aquarium of the world. These are the words that Jacques Cousteau used to describe the Sea of Cortez. It is said that eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of varieties of fish and mammals found their way into this “trap” and either stayed in its warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool bottom of the two mile-deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. In the months of January through March, Gray whales make their yearly migration from Alaska to give birth to their young in the shallow and warm waters of the Sea of Cortez.

Cabo San Lucas

This tourist friendly town, also just known as “Cabo,” is located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula and is full of entertainment for every age and liking. The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet at Land’s End, where you can observe the beautiful rock formations and the famous Cabo arch. In Cabo San Lucas you can find Medano Beach, the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area, an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night.

San José del Cabo

Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district as well as world-class restaurants. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride to explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.

The Corridor

The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 20 minute drive). Along this road you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, championship golf courses and beautiful views. Have your camera ready and make a roadside stop at the Costa Azul view-point for photo opportunities and a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut).

Todos Santos

Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José due to the breezes coming from the Pacific.

East Cape

People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, an eight fingered coral reef that offers outstanding snorkelling and scuba diving and turtle nesting on the beach. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and folks who just want to get away from it all.

La Paz

La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waist high water at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer.

Loreto

Loreto offers the best of both worlds for tourists who long to escape to an 'authentic-Mexico' with settings that take you back-in-time along with ocean activities that rival that of any other modern coastal city. In Loreto you'll find historic buildings such as the enchanting Mision de Loreto - a mission-style church that was built in 1697 as well as The Islands of Loreto which boasts Mexico's largest marine preserve where dolphins, seals, turtles and sea lions all play in the sea. For those who are partial to adventures on land; there is hiking, biking, and nature-tours that fill up a camera with pictures of radiant natural settings. Loreto is the perfect place for everyone from honeymooners to large families.

CURENCY EXCHANGE Dollars are accepted almost everywhere and you will get your change in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate. CASH OR CARD? Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted, but you often run into cash only places. Always ask beforehand and carry cash. Your bank will most likely charge you international transaction fees if you pay with your card.

ATMs - The easiest way to get pesos is to simply withdraw money from an ATM in Los Cabos. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate (best possible rate). Examples include Banorte, Bancomer, Santander, Banamex, and HSBC. Non-bank ATMs located in the street will charge higher fees. Some ATMs only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing and try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high fees.

DRIVING - Renting a car will allow you to enjoy the freedom of exploring Los Cabos. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there is some organization within the chaos. If you are pulled over by local police for committing a driving infraction, the standard procedure is for them to take your Driver’s License. You will then have to go to the Police Station to pay your ticket and pick-up your license. There are two types of gasoline: Magna, which is regular, and Premium. Lleno (pronounced yeno) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos is customary. ALTO STOP

GROCERIES - In Cabo San Lucas, Wal-Mart and Costco are good options and easy to get to. You can always find a taxi outside of these stores. San José has a Wal-Mart and Mega. If you just need to grab something quickly, OXXO stores are small, reasonably priced convenient stores located all over town.

Imagine floating in a turquoise bay with pink sand or riding some epic waves, each beach offers something unique. Here is a list of the must-see beaches to help you decide which one is your dream beach or visit them all!

Cabo San Lucas Along the Corridor If you’re looking for the action, here it is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2-mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars, right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and family-friendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. Numerous activities and water sports are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the best spot to do it. Its stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see.

Location:

beach is relatively secluded; therefore, you rarely run into beach vendors. Location: Travelling west from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the sign which reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. Tips: Swim from the shore towards the rocks on the right side of the beach for a great snorkeling experience. Santa Maria has brand new bathrooms and palapas.

Tips:

San Jose del Cabo

LAS VIUDAS

Las Viudas (The Widows) beach is not visible from the road and is possibly the most private beach you will find on this list. What makes it unique are the rock formations that create small pools and coves where you can have a private and peaceful beach day. This beach is swimmable with caution, but if you find your own pool you can avoid the waves. Turn right at Km. 12.5 of the corridor and follow the dirt road down to the beach. There is a sign that reads “Las Viudas” but keep your eyes peeled; the entrance sneaks up on you. You won’t find any services or vendors so bring all your beach essentials with you.

PALMILLA

CHILENO

Location: In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. The beach is accessible by foot through the east side of the marina or via Avenida del Pescador. Tips: Be prepared to be approached by souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “No, gracias.” Prices don’t vary much from one water sports rental place to another. Visit Lover’s Beach while you’re there.

LOVER’S BEACH

Getting there is an adventure in itself, due to the fact that it is reachable only by boat or kayak. The easiest way is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Prices are around $15.00 USD per person. Ask your captain to cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Once you arrive, you’ll notice the striking rock formations and caves. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean; the locals call this Divorce Beach. This side is very dangerous for swimming because of the powerful undertow, so swim on Lover’s Beach only. Location: Land’s End beside the famous arch. This beach is accessible only by boat. Tips: There are a couple of vendors who offer beer and water, but you won’t find any other services. A good idea is to spend the day at Medano Beach and take an hour or two to go to Lover’s Beach; this should be time enough to explore this natural wonderland.

www.DestinoLosCabos.com

Chileno is a very popular location for snorkelling, swimming or just spending the day under the newlyinstalled palapas. You’ll find tide pools at the east end of the beach and beautiful reefs offering excellent snorkelling and scuba diving. This is the only beach with public restrooms and it has plenty of palapas for shade. Location: Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near Km. 14 of the main highway. Tips: If you visit Chileno on a weekend, make an effort to arrive early; snorkelling visibility is often better in the mornings, you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours and, if you beat the crowds, you’ll be guaranteed a palapa to yourself for much-needed shade. Bring snorkelling gear!

SANTA MARIA

Santa Maria offers a stunning horseshoe cove with coarse coral-colored sand and abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkelling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family-friendly

Palmilla beach is known for its family-friendly calm waters and a mile-long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes, the One&Only Hotel and the world renowned Jack Nicklaus Ocean Nine golf course. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter, but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis. Location: Take the Palmilla ramp exit at Km. 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel. Tips: Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa, or bring your own umbrella. No services are available here.

COSTA AZUL

If what you’re looking for is a good surf spot you can find it here without driving out of town. Head over to Zipper’s for a surf session and lunch and beers at the restaurant. To the west of Zippers is Acapulquito beach where the Cabo Surf Hotel and Mike Doyle Surf School are located. You can find surf shops in the area where you can rent surf

BAJA 101 and stand-up paddle boards and set up lessons. The surf is bigger during the summer, and in the winter this is a good spot for snorkelling and swimming. Location: Exit into the arroyo at Km. 28 via the Costa Azul Bridge. Tips: Swimming with caution is possible in this area but keep an eye out for surfers.

bay in waist high water that is crystal clear with shades of blue turquoise. Follow the shore towards the northeast side and you will find the famous “mushroom rock” as well as other interesting rock formations. Pictures just don’t do it justice. You won’t regret visiting Playa Balandra! Location: About 30 minutes from the boardwalk in La Paz. Simply follow the main drag along the boardwalk, then through Costa Baja Golf Course and continue to wind around the coast and through the mountains until

LA PLAYITA

La Playita (the little beach) is a long stretch of beach where you will often find locals fishing from the shore and families with children enjoying the beach-front playground. On the right end of La Playita you can find a roped-off swimming area just outside the entrance to the beautiful Puerto Los Cabos 500-slip marina. To the left is the natural open beach where you can swim, skim-board and enjoy a peaceful beach day away from the crowds. Location: Follow the signs to La Playita/Puerto Los Cabos from Boulevard Mijares in downtown San José del Cabo (across from the fire department). Tips: You will find new and wellmaintained bathrooms, palapas and fishing charters. There are no food services directly on the beach, but several casual restaurants in the surrounding area.

On the Pacific CERRITOS

Cerritos beach is a popular surf spot and swimming here is relatively safe. The scenic 45-minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant is a perfect spot to spend a relaxing day, maybe even get a massage on the beach. If you want to be active, you can take a surf lesson at Baja Surf Camp or rent surf and boogie boards at the Costa Azul Surf Shop. Location: Exit at Km. 66 of the Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos Highway. Watch the markers and look for the signs. Drive about 1.7 miles to the beach area. Tips: Lounge chairs, restrooms, food and drinks are available at The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant. The ocean currents are strong and the waves can be quite powerful on a big day, so swim with caution.

DON'T MISS THE 3RD ANNUAL DOG SURF CONTEST AT CERRITOS BEACH TO BENEFIT LOCAL DOG RESCUE IN PESCADERO - Sunday, June 5, 2016.

Event promoter Kim Wexman has hosted for the past three years the very succesful Dog Surf Competition at Cerritos Beach. Tillman, the 2015 winner. you see the signs for the beach. Tips: No bathroom facilities. There is a truck where you can buy water and snacks, but it is recommended to bring your own in case they are closed. There are palapas, but not a lot. You can rent kayaks and snorkel gear.

Loreto

ISLA CORONADO

A wildlife reserve where visitors may anchor, snorkel, scuba and camp. The panga ride usually includes a cruise around the island where it’s very common to see sea lions, seals and even sea otters. The only swimmable beach on the island has pristine white sand and shallow crystal clear turquoise water, which creates ideal snorkelling conditions. Coronado Island is the ideal place for an adventure or to simply immerse yourself in nature and relax. Location: About 7 miles or 30 minutes (on boat) northeast of Loreto. Tips: To get to Coronado Island you must take a boat or a panga. You will find pangas in Loreto’s Marina that you can hire to take you. The best option is to ask your concierge to arrange this for you. There are no services or restaurants on the beach. There are several large palapas with tables and benches and also an ecorestroom. Bring hiking shoes if you plan to explore the area. Bring Snorkelling gear!

BOATING & FISHING

With calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather, some may argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa María Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, there are endless options to fit your needs.

BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are several charter companies that can accommodate your needs. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour of the landmark arch, a few hours of fishing, and a cruise to one of our beautiful bays for a swim. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the biggest difference between a yacht and a fishing boat rental is the cost. Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers, pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option. Cruisers accommodate larger groups and are more comfortable when the sea is rough on a windy day. THE MARINAS Marina Cabo San Lucas The area’s largest commercial marina features 380 slips and accommodates vessels of up to 375 feet. Amenities include 24-hour security, electricity and potable water, a fuel dock, and convenient laundry and shower facilities. Puerto Los Cabos Located in La Playita just north of San José del Cabo is the newest marina in the area with 200 available slips for boats up to 400 feet. Amenities are 12

www.DestinoLosCabos.com

SEASONAL FISHING CHART

similar to Marina Cabo San Lucas, though the boatyard’s 150-ton travel lift can accommodate larger vessels. FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate, no matter what your level of fishing experience is. What to Expect Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or these amenities can be added at an additional cost. It is better to leave early; trips usually begin at 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. It is customary to leave the crew a gratuity of 15% to 20%. Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait, you may buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire may also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

SNORKELLING & SCUBA DIVING

Prepare yourself for an incredible show of nature as you swim side by side with colourful schools of fish, eels, rays, octopus, sea turtles and more. The Sea of Cortez or the “Aquarium of the World” offers many opportunities to experience incredible underwater wildlife.

SCUBA DIVING DESTINATIONS Note: travel time is from the Cabo San Lucas marina. Land’s End Intermediate-Advanced - 50’-60’ Five minutes by boat and you can share the water with sea lions and moray eels, with a sunken boat visible in the Falls. Sand Falls Beginners - Advanced - 30’-100’ Steep sand banks drop sharply into a canyon filled with tropical fish. The canyon runs from the depths of the Cabo San Lucas bay to within 30 feet of the beach. Pelican Rock Beginners - 25’-80’ This large rock attracts many tropical fish and is only five minutes from shore. Neptune’s Finger Advanced - 80’-100’ A spectacular canyon wall dive. Cabeza de Ballena Beginners - 20’-40’ A 25-minute boat ride leads to a dive through large boulders with many fish. Santa María Cave Beginners - 20’-40’ Reachable from the shore or a 35-minute boat ride, the entrance to Santa Maria canyon has a huge variety of fish which feed right from your hand. Chileno Beginners - 30’-70’ This location offers parking, sea turtle sightings, tropical fish, and night dives over a sandy and rocky bottom following a 35-minute boat ride. El Gavilán Intermediate/Advanced - 70’-100’ This rocky ledge leads into a canyon where groupers and larger fish are often sighted; 35 minutes by boat. Blow Hole Beginners/Advanced - 30’-70’ 35-minutes from San Lucas, or just 10

minutes from Chileno beach, this dive offers rocky valleys presenting a variety of fish. Las Salinas Beginners - 30’-45’ - A sunken Japanese fishing boat attracts a large assortment of fish at this beginners’ dive; about 80 minutes from Cabo San Lucas or one hour from La Playita. Gordo Banks Advanced - 110’-120’ - A seamount provides views of marlin, hammerheads, skip jacks and at times huge manta rays; one hour from La Playita. Cabo Pulmo Beginner-Advanced - 30’-100’ A one hour drive east of San José or five minutes by boat and you’ll find the only living coral reef in the Sea of Cortez. SNORKELLING SPOTS Cabo offers several methods for snorkelling. You may drive to a local beach and swim out, book a tour with one of the many popular companies, or charter a private boat. Tours are typically two or three hours. Stay away from the Pacific side of the peninsula; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports. Pelican Rock

A quick five-minute ride from the Cabo San Lucas marina or Medano Beach is all it takes to get to this fish-attracting rock.

Lover’s Beach This popular and uniquely-named beach is accessible only by boat. Be on the look-out, however, as the water is not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Bay Snorkel tours regularly visit Santa Maria Bay. If you choose to drive there, it’s an easy swim from the shore to the reef on the right side of the cove. Chileno Bay Snorkelers will find a safe, roped-off area for swimming at this common tour destination. Cabo Pulmo A Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkelling in the area. This eightfingered coral reef is about a 2-hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it!

FLYBOARDING

SURFING

Baja Sur has been a popular surfing destination since the ‘50s. The East Cape is popular for kite surfing and the Pacific coast has several surf breaks where you will find less crowds. See our Baja Sur map and look for this symbol to locate the surf spots mentioned bellow. SAN PEDRITO Level: Advanced. Direction: Right, left. Location: Pacific side right before arriving to Todos Santos. Have you ever had a dream about flying like Superman or maybe swimming like a dolphin? Dreams can come true in Cabo! The FlyBoard is a device connected and powered by a personal watercraft, which allows propulsion underwater and in the air. Users are connected to the board by wakeboard boots, under which, water pressure provides thrust. A certified trainer controls the power and height and you control all the movement. Available at Medano beach or in the Puerto Los Cabos Marina in San José del Cabo.

STAND UP PADDLING

There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just a paddle and a board. Stand up paddling is a great way to see marine life and to get a great workout and while enjoying nature. At Medano beach you can rent boards in several locations. Certain companies offer paddling lessons and some have yoga classes on the board.

KITE SURFING

This sport is most popular in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (the north-east side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kite-boarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than in La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December. Every January the Lord of the Wind tournament takes place in La Ventana. 14

December through February East Cape and Costa Azul are on the flatter side. The Pacific can be good this time of year because it’s exposed to the west swell. March through May This is the windy season. Swells are consistent and you’ll run into fewer crowds.

ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES Photo courtesy Wild Canyon

Adventure Parks There are several adventure parks in Los Cabos where you and your kids can experience zip-lining, backcountry ATV tours, a camel safari, and more. Zip-lines are appropriate for kids of 8 years and up and be prepared to hike from 5 to 15 minutes from line to line. Most companies include transportation. Parasailing If heights over land are not right for you, try a parasailing trip and gain some altitude to enjoy beautiful views of Cabo while tethered firmly to a speedboat!

Buggy, Atv, Or Bike Rentals There are several local companies which offer ATVs, buggies, and other off-road vehicles for trail and beach cruising. Strap on some goggles and hop behind the wheel of one of these off-road racers for an afternoon of fast-paced fun! Vehicles include typical ATVs or enclosed rail buggies or RZR ATVs. Tours are typically three hours, and drivers must be 16 years of age with a valid drivers’ license. If pedal-powered rides are more your speed, look into renting a mountain bike, beach cruiser, or joining a guided bicycle tour of town. Just make sure to wear a helmet! Horseback Rides, Nature Walks, and Bird Watching Los Cabos (particularly San José del Cabo) offers a number of horseback excursions for all ages. Saddle up for a sunset guided beach ride, venture up a hidden canyon trail, or just sit back in the shade while experienced horse trainers give the kids lessons in horsemanship – there’s something for everyone! San José also boasts a natural estuary and nature preserve. Enjoy a peaceful, self-guided nature walk to observe some of the lushest landscape in the area. Species of flora and fauna are abundant: dozens of species of cactus, lizards, and birds can be spotted on this solitary walk, just a few minutes from downtown. Cactus-lovers may also want to check out the nearby cactus gardens Wirikuta, offering a large variety of cacti laid out in an artful outdoor setting.

Wet Fun Water Park Located about 20 minutes from San José, this water park has shallow pools and small slides for young children, water mushrooms, a pirate ship and a giant bucket that dumps water on the bystanders bellow. For the adrenaline seekers, several fast and large slides stand tall and mighty and offer a great view of the beautiful surrounding mountains. To get there take HWY 1 north from the San José International Airport towards La Paz and East Cape. After about 15 miles, the exit for Caudaño and the water park will be at km 66. Follow this road for a few minutes and you will find the park on your right. Turtle Release Every year, several species of endangered sea turtles nest in the warm sands of Los Cabos. Your family will have the opportunity to help these fragile and tiny creatures make it safely into the sea. Children will learn about the importance of conservation and they will surely enjoy the experience of helping these little friends. Sol de Mayo Waterfall Cascade Located about an hour and a half away from Los Cabos, the Sol de Mayo Oasis is yet another natural beauty of the Southern Baja California region. The hike leads the adventurous to a majestically beautiful oasis where everyone can swim and even dive into the cool, serene waters. Be sure to pack a lunch, and take plenty of water. There are plenty of signs to guide everyone to this wonderful piece of paradise. After arriving in Santiago, turn right up the little hill towards the town square. The cost is $6 US per person to access the easy hike to the clear-water falls. Everything you need to know about Baja Sur

FISHING REPORT

All that’s fishy from Land's End to La Paz by Gary Graham

Article and photos by Philipp Moser – Naturalist and owner at Cabo Trek Tours www.cabotrek.com

May is the month when almost all the big animals that annually visit the Baja California Sur region leave. The Humpbacks, the Grays, the Blues, and last but not least, the biggest fish in the Ocean…the Whale Sharks. As incredible as it sounds, research on Whale Sharks only started in 1995. So it’s no wonder there is so little known about them! Scientists think they live up to 80 to 100 years and the biggest ever measured was well over 60 feet and weighed over 25.000 kilos. We also know where they most likely hang out in certain times of the year. They congregate in areas rich in food such as the bay of La Paz. Every year the Ocean currents force the nutrients up into the Sea of Cortez, while the North winds push it back down into the biggest bay of the peninsula, and that is where around 100 sharks pay visit every year. Researchers are still unsure where the sharks go after they leave. Whale Shark expert Darren Whitehead tells us that there is connectivity between Bahia Los Angeles (north of Loreto), Puerto Vallarta and eventually even with the archipelago of Socorro. But no evidence has been collected since tagging has not yet happened due to the high expenses involved. Darren just recently started his research project and he's working on his PhD. With the help of interns who come from

all over the world he's working on collecting as much data as possible to further understand this beautiful creature. This plankton feeding animal is classified as a vulnerable species, meaning that there are concerns about the health status of the population worldwide. Biggest threats are the human and its activity, though the good news is that targeted fishing is declining. Nevertheless big ships such as container transporters, illegal nets by catch, and Ocean contamination are still slowing down the process of recovery. A day excursion between October and March to La Paz is well worth the ride when you get the chance to swim next to this gentle giant of the Ocean. We surely recommend that you choose a reputable company, eventually one that provides a marine biologist specialized in whale sharks. The amount of information provided will be for sure an added value to your tour. Don't choose the cheapest operator as they probably will not respect the rules or the animal. Make the right choice and enjoy an amazing trip! And a last tip: if you still have a spare hour I definitely recommend paying a visit to the “Museo de la Ballena” (the whale museum), located on the malecon in La Paz. It just opened after being remodeled and it delivers additional quality information on all the big animals present in this region. *

Visitors to Baja Sur arriving by air, land or sea share one thing in common -- the predictable signature spring weather that is one of the foundations of Baja’s popularity. Sportfishing is another fundamental that, although isn’t as predictable as the weather, more often than not promises an extraordinary adventure. The remarkably large number of exotic fish found in the fertile waters surrounding the tip is rarely found anywhere else in the world and they seldom all bite at the same time. Seemingly sophisticated anglers arrive with enough fishing tackle to open their own stores; they are intent on catching a specific species for one reason or another, i.e., their bucket list, never caught one, favorite fish to catch, etc. They insist on targeting that special fish regardless of the advice of their Captain and crew and they are willing to sacrifice their entire trip in search of it even though it may be inaccessible. At present, the most talked about fish seems to be the wahoo, which has been consistently in catch reports from Baja’s tip to La Paz. Although usually an incidental catch, some boats have been scoring multiple fish from barely 10 pounds up to 50 pounds with best results being in the early morning close to shore. Yellowtail, normally more of a winter catch, recently reappeared at La Paz – nice-sized ones up to 30 pounds. In the billfish category, striped marlin and sailfish will be the most likely targets. Usually thick this time of year, they are scattered now; the good news is if you find one, chances are there will be a few more around. Another popular choice is yellowfin tuna that have been found traveling offshore beneath large porpoise schools searching for food. Most are fish up to 20 pounds with a few missed in the school five times that size. Inshore, a few miles off Land’s End, the roosterfish bite has been steady for fish up to 25 pounds -- all released -which is good news. Mixed in are some healthy jack crevalle in the same size class -- another release candidate, along with all the bonito you want. If you happen to hook one of the much sought after white skipjack with horizontal white bars, they are a great choice for ceviche. Another inshore choice is to fish the bottom close to shore for cabrilla, pargo and grouper -- all great table fare that your favorite restaurant will be delighted to prepare for your lunch or dinner. While fishing and weather are outstanding, remember: don’t waste your trip targeting a species of fish that aren’t biting. If you happen to hook one of the much sought after white skipjack with horizontal white bars, they are a great choice for ceviche.

DANIELA DEBERGE Surf photographer / Owner of Desert Barrels: The Surf Spot

Daniela was born in New Mexico and spent her early childhood at her family’s ranch there. Their trips to Mexico were frequent and the family finally landed in Los Cabos permanently when she was eight years old. Daniela inherited her love of photography from her mother, and living by the ocean allowed her to combine this with a new passion: surf photography. She names Art Brewer and Anthony Ghiglia as two of her major influences in this pursuit. Daniela started working at a surf shop at the young age of nine, and vowed she would one day own a place of her own. The idea for Desert Barrels was born from a photograph she took at Elías Calles, B.C.S. Standing atop her truck shooting the huge swell, she was struck by the realization that this is the only place in Mexico where you can find that combination of desert and barrels. She started her business in May 2010, with the shop’s grand opening on August 26 that same year. She remains committed to the local surf scene, and characterizes her shop as one that caters to locals and visitors alike. It carries surfboards, skateboards, surf gear, and clothing, with products for men, kids, and a boutique for women. Many of the major brands are represented: Volcom, Lost, Sea Gypsies, Capitan Fin, Pelagic, Costa, Electric, Filtrate, Dragon, JCHawaii boards, and more. Desert Barrels sponsors every surf event in the region, including the two major ones this month: the Cabo Open of Surf and the 2016 Mexican National Children’s and Youth Surfing Championship. The Desert Barrels team rider is La Playita local favorite Nathan Browne. Plaza Paseo Los Cabos, behind Mega in San José del Cabo. fast drop and then it’s a fast “lippy” wave with a few good sections to hit! The inside is shallow over the rocks with a nice quick barrel section at the beach. The best board to ride is your favourite highperformance short board. Nobody can deny that Los Cabos is a world class destination that attracts surfers from all over. The incredible musical lineup for 2016 will include the reggae rock band from California: Pepper. This band has been a mainstay on festival and club stages for years. Since the band's formation, they have released five studio albums as well as one live album, and are on the verge of releasing the band’s latest, the highly anticipated, "Ohana", now available on iTunes. On Saturday, June 11, from Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, the internationally acclaimed and beloved party band, Kinky, will be hitting the stage performing the band’s incredible mix of Latin, rock, dance, techno, and just overall awesome brand of music. Supporting the headlining bands will be amazing local bands such as The Shamans, Tim Lang & The Post Surf Crew, among others. Both nights are totally free and all ages, open to the public.

Los Cabos will be hosting another year of the Los Cabos Open of Surf, an event that is anticipated with excitement, both locally and internationally. The Los Cabos Surf Open multi-day event is one of Mexico’s biggest surf festivals, and brings together some of the world’s best surfers to the competition held at Zippers, Costa Azul, in San José del Cabo. Beginning in 2013, the event started ASP 6-Star Men's competition, and in 2014, it became the first Women's ASP 6-Star festival in Mexico. Huge crowds are once again expected for this 3rd Annual popular surfing bonanza. Zippers is described as a cobblestone right-hand wave that produces 8 to 10 foot waves during the summer. It is mainly a right point beach break and it breaks best on a solid south swell and medium tide. It has its best shape at 4 to 5 feet, and the bottom is sand over boulders. The take-off is a short, steep

The intention behind the event is simple: To promote the destination of Los Cabos through surfing and it's appealing lifestyle. Today, surfers are personalities whose recognition goes beyond the sea and the waves. They are athletes with great presence in social media and linking surfing to Los Cabos has given the destination an invaluable exposure.

- Ulises Torres, Co-creator of the Los Cabos Open of Surf.

Catching Up with World Champion Longboarder and Surfers Healing co-founder Izzy Paskowitz By Sabrina Lear Photos by Daniela Fernandez

Izzy and Issiah Paskowitz

Izzy Paskowitz and Miguel Rojas 24

www.DestinoLosCabos.com

In your autobiography, "Scratching the Horizon - A Surfing Life" you talk about the first time you surfed with your father, Dorian "Doc" Paskowitz, in 1969 at age six at Tourmaline in San Diego. When did you first surf Los Cabos, and what's your favorite break? Those days are ingrained like the hieroglyphics on King Tut's tomb. It was 1977 and there was no one there! The only things on the beach in San José were the trailer park and the Hotel Presidente. There were almost no surfers and a few gringos just discovering Gringo Hill, and I remember a local Mexican fisherman who surfed The Rock with us. We lived in a little bungalow up in the cove on the north side of The Rock. That shack was like a fine room at the Cabo Surf Hotel because we'd been living in the arroyo and freshwater bathing was a luxury that didn't happen a lot. Yeah, so The Rock was the spot! The East Cape was like going to the dark side of the moon and we did that a lot, surfing all day by ourselves. Our TV was beautiful sunrises and sunsets, like paintings, I took so many pictures of them back then. The beaches were blanketed by conical shells like pointy bullets—white and brown—not one now. How do you feel when you're here? Is it a chance to unwind? Yes, May and October is my time to be with my son, Isaiah, and to be just like all those other selfish mofo's like me that want to catch all the best waves in the set. It's my time to meet up with friends who are part of the "Surfers Healing" backbone and enjoy the people of Cabo, the food and surf. It's when I don't surf for my special children, because you see I feel like they're all mine! I LOVE them all, my heart connects with them, and the experience I get out of it makes me feel connected to a higher power, maybe God? I don't know. But I still love surfing and my new 9-foot performance Glen Minami longboards and although I am a grandfather in surfing, I still think I'm Kelly Slater. You and your wife, Danielle, founded Surfers Healing after your 1996 surfing experience in Hawaii with your son, Isaiah, now 25. What would you say to younger, struggling parents of autistic children? It's a long bumpy road and things will get worse, but it does get better and your

life will not be ordinary. There was a time when I wished I was just ordinary; now I am so grateful for the chance to live a very unordinary life. The wonderful people I have met who are a part of this charity's mission is the greatest gift. Autism will make you into a better person! Let this happen. Be strong, keep the family together. Surround yourself with people who love your child, even though in most cases it won't be your family. Alone you cannot make it, we are all in this together. I also want to thank all the local Cabo surfers who continue to make the autism surf camps bigger and better, the Mike Doyle Surf School, Miguel Rojas Godoy, Janet Jensen, Sergio, and all the locals. Lemoña and Red Autismo, and Mauricio Balderrama for his love for the people of San José and for opening the doors of Cabo Surf to all the special children and their families. You also run the Paskowitz family’s surf camps. Will there be a third generation of Paskowitzes to step up when you retire? Or is retirement not an option? Who knows? My grandson, Bronson, seems to like surfing. Maybe he will. He's 3 and I'm 53 so hopefully I can hold on until then. When you're away from the waves, what do you do for fun? I love where I live! A small, isolated ranch in Orange County that we bought from my wife's parents. The horses are in the front yard. It's our paradise. Danielle has taught me to ride Western, taking the style of Mexican vaqueros: Rein-CowHorse. So I want to be a cowboy now! I'm not bad, won a couple buckles (my wife has a case full of buckles and champion saddles) in the arena, but we can also fill our saddle bags with cold beer and trail ride for days with a six shooter on my hip. I love it. I don't know, being around real cowboys has taught me manners and loyalty. Also old surfers seem to turn into old ladies. Old cowboys, the older they get the cooler they look. www.surfershealing.org *

RED AUTISMO by Sabrina Lear

Red Autismo (Autism Network) provides children in the Los Cabos area with early evaluation and intervention for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) through its center in the Chamizal neighborhood of San José del Cabo. Led by President Lemoña Aretos, this small and dynamic nonprofit is devoted to assisting children that fall within the spectrum or face other developmental disorders. Red Autismo seeks to support, guide, and educate families, relatives, teachers, therapists and professionals. The Inclusive Education for Children with Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorders (INEVI) pilot project began in January 2015 with very successful results. Fifteen preschool and elementary children now attend INEVI with a core program of academics, occupational therapy, sensory integrated therapy, and cognitive, speech and language therapy. The center has 47 children in its INEVI and therapeutic programs with eight children wait listed. Teaching is conducted in groups of five with children carefully selected to form a dynamic of different strengths designed to help one another. Red Autismo also provides support to parents dealing with emotional issues, stress, and handling their children at home and in social environments. Ongoing workshops also address school inclusion, diet, and biomedical treatments. Also provided are informative public programs about ASD directed at pre-school and elementary school levels. Thanks to support from private donors, the local community, fundraisers, the Los Cabos Children's Foundation and the Solmar Foundation, Red Autismo has moved forward on its goal to purchase its center to reduce operating costs. After raising $130,000 USD, its short term goal is to raise an additional $33,000 USD by August 2016 to complete the purchase. This past April, Autism Awareness Month, Red Autismo celebrated with lectures on ASD and neurodevelopment disorder, a 2K race and a "Be the Puzzle Piece" rally at El Tule Beach. Since 2005, Surfers Healing, the US nonprofit created by Izzy and Danielle Paskowitz to expose ASD children and families to the calming effects of surfing, has held an April surf clinic at Acapulquito Beach. It's a fun and empowering "vacation day" and a chance for special needs families to get out, explore, and connect with the ocean. End your night with a dining experience at one of the many exquisite restaurants in the area. From the month of November through June, the Art Walk takes place every Thursday from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm, but the art itself never stops, the galleries are open all day, every day! The ever-growing Gallery District has become in recent years the cultural centre of Los Cabos with many high-end fine art galleries displaying original paintings, sculpture, photography, and jewelry made by local and international contemporary artists. Among these art galleries are shops housing the works by the top folk artists and artisans of Los Cabos and Mexico .

THE SHAMANS >

ONLY POSITIVE VIBES by Yeye

The Shamans nurture family, friends and natural education. Music is their nature. Somehow they know that to be a genuine Shaman, one needs community recognition. As musicians, Cheo, Eliot, and Stosh, form a perfect triangle, its expression being measured as all sides equal. Their music is playful, inspired by their commitment to co-creating peaceful and fun times, their gift to the world is ONLY POSITIVE VIBES. Here is their interview: What is the story of Shamans? Deep in the heart of Baja, the forces of sound and nature brought three wise wandering spirits together to pursue a collective vision, a band or whatever. The Shamans create sounds fiting in, but not restrained by, the styles of psychedelic, experimental and surfy rock. We play at local bars here and there like Syriaccus and Baja Brewing Co, sometimes bringing superjams with many local musicians. We play a more mellowed-out rock set Tuesday’s and Saturdays at Flora Farm, and we play events, parties and weddings. How would you describe the music scene in Los Cabos? It’s good, there’s some really awesome local bands and musicians around right now doing cool and interesting stuff, and it’s grown quite a bit. Who is your favorite local surfer? This one is complicated because we’re all local surfers and most of the best surfers around are our friends! Where do you see The Shamans in 5 years? We’ll probably all be presidents...[laughs], who knows what the

future holds, but most definitely we will still be making sweet sounds for sweet people. Why the name The Shamans? Well, while we like the idea of shamans being healers and connecting you to nature, the spiritual world and all that trippy stuff, mostly it was just the name we all liked the best because it sounded good. That was the most appropriate one for all crowds [laughs]. What can you tell all the surfers out there about the local surf scene in Los Cabos? It's good! Los Cabos is a great place to surf with lots of really fun and cool spots. Be respectful to them to be treated well by everyone. What have the last surf contest music scenes been like and what is it like being a part of it? The contests like the Los Cabos Open of Surf have brought pretty cool music scenes down with all different kinds of musicians. It was awesome being able to jam with some of them, and to just watch them too. The contests brought good crowds for trippy surfy bands like us, which was nice. How does surfing relate to your music? Well, a lot of the music we play has some very surfy elements, we’ve always been into old surf and psychedelic music, and everything we play would most likely generally appeal to the surf crowd since well, we’re a part of it [laughs].

B aja's treasures

Rees Jone's Mexican Odyssey Adam Lawrence visits Danzante Bay in Mexico and sees the beginnings of a remarkable Rees Jones course.

Los Cabos has undergone a huge amount of tourist development in the last few decades. Golf has played an important and increasingly high profile role in that, from the Nicklaus-designed Cabo del Sol Ocean course, which debuted back in the early 90s, to the two courses at the Diamante resort. The first of those, designed by Davis Love and Paul Cowley, has made a number of world top 100 lists, while the second, El Cardonal, proved to be the first completed course for Tiger Woods’ design firm. Spurred by the success of the Cabo region, developers have, more recently, looked elsewhere on the peninsula for opportunities. The area around the small town of Loreto, slightly more than half way down the peninsula on the Sea of Cortez, has become the latest part of Baja to see golf development. Hotelier Owen Perry’s Villa Group is leading the economic recovery in the area. The Villa Group already owns a number of successful properties in Cabo, Cancun and Puerto Vallarta. Its latest project, Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto, is, in many ways, typical of the group’s modus operandi: a large hotel that operates substantially on a timeshare basis. But what’s different is that this one has golf and a unique residential component. Loreto, though linked by air to Los Angeles, is a town of only 14,000 people. The property found by Perry’s group sits about half an hour south of Loreto, in an isolated bay (a nearby fishing village is the only habitation close by; that village has got electricity for

“The run home from the twelfth will be highly dramatic” 30

the first time as a result of the development). The hotel opened five years ago, before the golf course was even started, which doubtless made life a little bit more comfortable for architect Rees Jones and his associate Steve Weisser when they travelled to the site. It’s a fascinating piece of property, effectively divided into four sections. Four holes occupy the valley just inland of the hotel, while three more play down to the beach and back in a sand dune environment. Small pockets of residential lots are integrated into the routing to preserve the overall golf experience. Holes two to eight, which are expected to be completed by the fall of 2017, will move back and forth up, across and down a canyon, while holes fifteen and sixteen climb to the spectacular seventeenth hole, set on the cliffs above the Sea of Cortez, before the final hole takes players back to the clubhouse area. Each zone has its own characteristics, which will be reflected in the holes. “We see Danzante Bay as part desert, part mountain and part sand dune,” says Weisser, who has run the project for the Jones firm. The first hole, as well as holes nine to eleven, occupy the valley, though the ninth uses the side of the mountain well to create an attractive drop shot par three. The canyon that will be home to holes two to eight is dramatic ground, with dry river beds setting up potentially excellent risk reward shots. But the real excitement of the course (which is known as Danzante Bay) lies in the beachfront holes and the three closers. The run home from the twelfth will be highly dramatic. The twelfth, a long par five, is a strong three

shot hole which plays down the edge of the hotel to a green situated only yards from the beach. Thirteen, a par three of 190 yards from the back tee, marks the course’s closest interaction with the sea – the green is practically on the beach, while fourteen, a mid-length par four, plays away from the water and features an excellent green complex that uses a grassy hollow at front left to set up the hole’s strategy. Holes fifteen and sixteen are both uphill, working their way up another canyon. This valley is pretty tight, and substantial earthworks were necessary to fit the golf holes into the landscape. When the golfer reaches the seventeenth tee, the reason for his journey up the canyon’s slope will be revealed, for the par three penultimate hole is as spectacular a oneshotter as exists on any course in the world. With tees set high up the cliff, the hole stretches to 178 yards, though the downhill nature makes it play a club or two shorter than this distance. The cliffs at this point are jagged in the extreme, and in fact, from the back tees, the water in the cove down at the bottom between tee and green is just about visible. Several sets of tees range around the hillside, setting up different angles of approach; it is a matter of some debate among the construction team as to which provides the most interesting shot. All, though, have to deal with a green that is set on a rock outcrop with huge falloffs on three sides down to the Sea of Cortez. Oftentimes, the grey whales that migrate from here all the way to Alaska each year will be visible from tee and green.

“The par three penultimate hole is as spectacular a oneshotter as exists on any course in the world” From the back tee, the green is shallow but wide. Move round to the front tee, though, and the angle changes, making a running shot into the flag quite appealing. It is a remarkable hole, as interesting golf-wise as it is spectacular, and it’s quite understandable why Perry and Jones felt the need to change their initial routing (and knock down some quite sizeable rock outcrops) to make it possible. Weisser says that Owen and Rees knew that the seventeenth would be a special hole. “We decided to change the initial routing so we could create one of the most memorable holes we have ever designed,” he explains. “Now that the hole is built, I don’t think anyone is in any doubt that we did the right thing.”

Baja's Wild Side by Alex Navarro – Baja Wilderness Tours

Just a short 7 Km north of Cabo San Lucas sits one of my favorite get away locations. As with many locals, the chaos of endless tourist bars and vendors selling NFL sombreros can wear on a person. When I feel a bit overwhelmed I head to the Cabo Surf Hotel for a reset. If you are looking to smile or see someone smile, have a seat on one of the many beachfront chairs and wait a couple minutes. This little known spot boasts some of the most consistent safe waves on the Pacific side of Cabo. On many occasions I have found myself sitting at the 7 Seas Seafood Grille for hours after arriving for just a short lunch. The views and atmosphere are as good as any in Cabo. Watching the variety of surfers take to the waves at Playa Acapulquito Beach is a soothing experience. Whether it’s a group of first timers learning to surf or seasoned veterans ripping up the waves, the calming effect this beach has on me is repetitive. Rental equipment is available daily and reasonably priced compared to many Cabo rentals. This property is just far enough away from Cabo to feel you’re in a remote part of Mexico and close enough to drive in for dinner. The rooms are well situated to allow beach front views to most, but the shore and ocean rooms are not to be missed. With the beds facing the Pacific Ocean the rooms were designed to watch the sunset each night. I have stayed in most of the resorts in Cabo and I can tell you, this place is different. Morning Yoga followed by a beach breakfast and an afternoon of guided snorkeling and surfing leaves you refreshed and ready for whatever the night brings. Mike Doyle’s surf school is considered one of the best in Cabo and is located conveniently inside the hotel. Do call ahead to be sure there is availability. Even though I consider the Cabo Surf Hotel a hidden gem, this property has been popular Worldwide with surfers for years and fills up often. *

Did you know that in the Baja California peninsula you can observe beautiful and magnificent birds like the Oriole, with its bright yellow and black feathers, and the Cardinal and Robin both shinning in their bright red color, as well as the electrifying Bluebird. And these are just some of the birds that you may encounter while exploring the Baja outdoors. Abundant with geese, ducks and falcons, the mountain region close to the magical and pristine oasis town of Santiago is an experience that must not be missed while visiting Baja. Make this vacation a memorable one and take the opportunity to discover the most amazing cold water pools just an hour from Cabo and also even find very peaceful thermal hot springs. You will love jumping in and relaxing in these healing waters.

If you want to witness some expert surfers ripping it up here in Los Cabos, there is no better month than June. Just a week after the Cabo Open of Surf, these same beaches will play host to some of the best raw talent from all over Mexico, as 180 young women and men descend on this little piece of heaven to participate in the 2016 Mexican National Children’s and Youth Surfing Championship. This promises to be an exciting tournament, with so many dedicated young surfers traveling to Los Cabos from around the country to compete in a dozen male and female surfing divisions, ranging in age from 7 to 18, two longboard divisions (male and female U18), and six bodyboarding divisions. At least thirteen Mexican states will be represented at this national event, with around thirtyfive participants hailing from our own state of Baja California Sur, and more from the neighboring state of Baja California. It all starts with the welcome ceremony and distribution of shirts on Monday, June 13, followed by elimination rounds on June 14, 15, and 16 at Playa Pescadito, La Roca, and Costa Azul (Zippers). Semifinals will be on Friday, June 17th, and finals on Saturday, June 18th. The event will be run simultaneously on dual podiums for all five days of competition: one at Zippers for the older divisions, and one at Pescaditos for the younger participants. The rounds may be held at different times between 8 am and 7 pm, depending on water and wind conditions. But ideally, there will be a first round in the morning and a second round in the afternoon. All of these beaches will be closed to public surfing during the days of the competition. The Mexican National Children’s and Youth Surfing Championship has been held every year since the 1980s at different breaks around the country, including Mazatlán, Sinaloa; Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca; Sayulita, Nayarit; and Colima. This is the first time it will be held in Los Cabos. The president of the ASBCS, José Alfredo Rendón Medina, tells me that with so many tournaments

going on, they like to say that 2016 is the year of surf in Los Cabos. Besides the Cabo Open of Surf and the Mexican National Children’s and Youth Surfing Championship in June, there have been four major surf tournaments so far this year: La Curva in January, San Pedrito in February, the junior longboard team selection in San Juanico in March, and the most important one at Zippers in April, which determined which surfers would form part of the Baja Sur team at the nationals. There will also be another tournament at Shipwrecks in July. Last but certainly not least, Los Cabos will host the Mexican National Surfing Games Los Cabos 2016 in September. The ASBCS (Association of Surfers of Baja California Sur), the FMS (Mexican Federation of Surfers), and the ISA (International Surfing Association) have teamed up to organize the Mexican National Children’s and Youth Surfing Championship, a megaevent that stretches over five days and some of the finest beaches in this little part of our planet. Bring beach chairs, umbrellas, coolers, and refreshments if you want to enjoy the competition in style and comfort, and be sure to arrive early to get a good viewing spot. There will be live music, food stands, and souvenir sales. Come out and cheer on these kids, some of whom you can expect to be seeing at the world games before long. If you want to become more involved, get in touch with the ASBCS to find out what you can do as a volunteer: beach cleanup during and after, hosting some of the competitors or their families, or whatever you feel you can offer for a fun and worthy event. Support surfing in Mexico! This may be the most planet-healthy sporting event around, and one at which Los Cabos excels. For more information about the tournament or to contact the ASBCS (Asociación de Surf de BCS), find them on Facebook, or email them at asbcs_@hotmail.com. You can also find them at their base on the beach at Zippers (Costa Azul). The Federación Mexicana de Surfing also has a Facebook page.

YOUR DESTINATION FOR FITNESS

From The Training Team at Moduvated

Would you like to lose weight on your vacation for a change instead of packing on five or ten pounds? For the 4th year in a row the Moduvated team helped 600 visitors from the MDY school and synagogue of New York to keep up with their fitness regime while enjoying the beach in Cabo. The MDY event was held at the Marquis Resort near San Jose del Cabo from April 21st to the 30th.

LOS CABOS HALF MARATHON

The daily class schedule started at 7 every morning and continued through out the day with the Moduvated trainers providing classes and activities that included Spinning, TRX, Beach Bootcamps, Beach Walks, Hiking, Running, Pilates and Yoga. Personal trainers were also busy providing one to one and small group training in the weight room, as well as private classes for Pain Free Living. The fitness program provided something for every fitness level but the best attendance was, as usual, at the Moduvated signature class: Beach Bootcamp! Hopping on one leg in the sand, burpees and battle ropes were not for the faint of heart. TRX classes also provided a very intense but safe workout for the very fit MDY participants. The MDY group demonstrated that it is possible to enjoy your vacation while eating salads, lean proteins and drinking minimal amounts of alcohol. The daily buffet was filled with fresh vegetables, fruits, lean meats and many other delicious and healthy options. Los Cabos has always attracted a wide variety of visitors looking for world class golf, fishing, beautiful beaches, scuba diving, windsurfing, whale watching, watersports, surfing and of course the wild parties and booze-soaked nightlife. In recent years however, we have increasingly become a place where people of all ages come looking for a vacation focused on health and wellness. As the population of baby boomers and generation X ages, wellness destination vacations are growing in popularity and Los Cabos now has the best personal trainers and gyms to prove it. As people age, we realize just how little our life means without good health to enjoy it. For more information on how to enjoy a wellness vacation in Los Cabos contact us at www.moduvated.com * 34

LOS CABOS REAL ESTATE TOUR

IMAGINE

An uncomfortable sensation occurred to me on a Mid-May Thursday while sitting in the REmexico Real Estate Gallery office chair at the ArtWalk in San Jose del Cabo. While going through my email list and diligently responding to requests like “Last minute showing request?!?” and “Click here for cheap Cialis from Canada” I was jolted out of my chair by a cool trickle of back sweat. Summer had snuck in the front door and robbed me of that moments dignity. Still dazed from the realization that AC would become a necessary ally over the next four months I reached for the remote control and started pressing buttons. The climate had been nearly perfect for so long that I found myself having to re-learn the operation of my trusted companion. June marks the month that locals start to sleep with lighter sheets, less clothes, and a stationary fan as the temperature climbs. Some may find themselves turning on the AC for the first time this year or, if you are like me, triangulating a three-fan wind chamber that assists at 10 and annoys by 4. The temperature is not the only thing that is heating up in Los Cabos. Cabo Real Estate is surging. The amount of development money that has poured into the area from around the globe following Hurricane Odile has made it clear that investors see long-term growth potential in Cabo. Every client that I have toured over the past six months has been curious about seeing a construction crane every other KM. Another positive trend has been the amount of land lots selling. Our Market is seeing a shift from bargain hunters to individuals, families, and investors that have fallen in love with our area, done their research, and are taking action to further invest and build in this paradise. A recent client had been 36

whittling down her list to three perfect lots in her price range and within close proximity to the water when all three went “Pending” before she wrote her offer. A cautionary tale. With the Los Cabos Open of Surf being hosted at Costa Azul early this month, surfers are used to heated competition early in the summer. For would-be Cabo homebuyers competing bids are a phenomena not experienced since 2001-2007. In fact, the last three negotiations I have represented clients in have had competing offers. What does this mean to you? If you have been searching online over the past year and have found a home you love or a lot with the perfect location, be prepared to act decisively. Unlike two years ago you may not have the luxury of thinking about it until next season. Nobody wants to “settle” on the Baja paradise they will spend their precious vacation time. It also means that over the next four months, leave your flannel pajamas at home. *

JUNE 1ST, DÍA DE LA MARINA (MEXICAN NAVY DAY) In comparison to the United States, Mexico's Navy Day is very similar to the pageantry and pride of the Armed Forces celebration and remembrance that is observed annually on Memorial Day. Mexico's Naval parades and fireworks highlight the national civil holiday that is dedicated to the June 1st, 1917 occasion when Captain Don Rafael H. Izaguirre Castanyares led an exclusively native born crew of Mexicans aboard the ship "Tabasco" from the port of Veracruz. June 1st is a national Mexican government holiday that is observed throughout the Republic, but is limited in that employees are not entitled to a day off with pay. The holiday is a date that reaffirms the commitment to enhance coordination and cooperation between the government institutions of the Republic, for a peace time accord in Mexico that benefits all of its citizens. While recognized throughout the country, Mexico's Navy Day, is especially celebrated in port cities and towns like Cabo San Lucas, La Paz, Loreto and the Southern Baja California Peninsula. Part of the festivities include a show of the Navy vessels fleet, helicopters, beach volleyball tournaments, fishing competitions, gallant Naval ceremonies, parades of serious and dignified Navy men and women, carnival rides, and of course the much anticipated fireworks show. Mexico's Navy Day and its festivities have been known to last at least three days. PAWS ON PARADE AT FLORA FARMS The Los Cabos Humane Society presents Paws on Parade at Flora Farms on Sunday, June 5, from 3 to 7pm. It's a Dog Costume Contest and Country Style BBQ with Celebrity MC Michael Moloney of Extreme Makeover along with raffles, music, and lots of fun for all. Dress your dog up and participate or come and enjoy a wonderful afternoon and support the Humane Society. Tickets are $50 USD/$850 MX for adults, $25 USD/$425 MX for kids 12 and under, with free admission for kids under 6. To participate in the contest, pre-register with Jo Dart at cell 624 288 4536, or email jo_dart@hotmail.com. For ticket sales and contest details visit loscaboshumanesociety.com. JUNE 3RD AND 4TH, GALA DE DANZA This year's 4th Annual Los Cabos Gala de Danza is having its first ever Instagram photo contest entitled “Beautiful Artistry in an Extraordinary Place.” All contestants have to do to enter is follow @galadedanza on Instagram and post a photo of their dancing talents anywhere in the world. This year, 38 of the best artists, from protégé’s as young as seven to older seasoned professionals, will comprise the Dance Gala performers. The grand prize winners of the photo contest will receive two free tickets to this year's Gala de Danza on Saturday, June 4th, along with a signed pair of pointe shoes from one of our prima ballerinas. The winning photo will be posted on GDD's Instagram and Facebook accounts, and a printed version of the champion photo will be displayed in the lobby of the Pabellón Theatre during the Gala. JUNE 2ND - 4TH, THE 48TH ANNUAL BUD LIGHT SCORE BAJA 500 The 48th Anniversary of the Tecate SCORE Baja 500, which begins round three of the World Desert Championships with its offroad 500 mile race adventure will start and finish in Ensenada, after a straight one loop turnaround at the Northern border desert city of Tecate from June 4th to June 7th. The Tecate SCORE Baja 500 race will be internationally televised by CBS Sports. The world famous event is an elapsed-time race with staggered starts as the green flag on Saturday (June 6) will drop first for the motorcycles and quads at 5:30 a.m. and approximately 10 a.m. for the cars, trucks and UTVs. Nearly 250 entries are expected at the start line with entries from 25 U.S. States and 10 countries anticipated. The Baja 500 is part of a Mexico west coast race series that includes the Baja 1,000, San Felipe 250, and the Primm 300. Stock VW's, as well as small and large motorcycles join the array of offroad vehicles that include production cars, buggies, trucks, and custom fabricated vehicles that battle the dusty terrain and each other, to lay claim to cash prizes and the victory stand in this near half-century off-road racing competition. Most of the world's best desert racers will be on hand for the popular Baja California race, which began on July 26, in 1974. Some of the first to cross the finish will do so in about 9 hours with the rest of the field arriving anywhere from 10-12 hours later. For more information please go to www.score-international.com. JUNE 7 - 12, LOS CABOS SURF OPEN The Los Cabos Surf Open multi-day event is one of Mexico’s biggest surf festivals, and brings together some of the world’s best surfers to the competition held at Zippers, Costa Azul, in San José del Cabo. The event also features live music on the beach, which makes for a thrilling, fun-filled six days. Surfing professionals from Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Australia, Hawaii, Chile, France, England, Japan, Portugal, New Zealand, and Peru were in attendance last year, competing through elimination rounds of 23 heats that included over 143 athletes from 16 countries. Beginning in 2013, the event started ASP 6-Star Men's competition, and in 2014, it became the first Women's ASP 6-Star festival in Mexico. Huge crowds are once again

expected for this 3rd Annual popular surfing bonanza. "We had amazing waves and I’ve had some fun heats" said Coco Ho, one of the top female seeds from Hawaii. Another dazzling aspect of the Los Cabos Open of Surf is the great musical festival that starts on Thursday June 9 and rages on until Sunday June 12. For more information please visit loscabosopenofsurf.com JUNE 21, FATHER’S DAY While Father's Day in Mexico is not the Federal Mexican Holiday that Mother's Day is, but the day which recognizes all daddy's everywhere is still definitely a national day of observance. One in which cards, chocolate, artwork, tshirts and an assortment of other gifts are given to fathers, in much the same tradition that ties and power tools are given to male leaders of the family are back home in America. What differentiates Father's Day in Mexico from Mother's Day and Dia de los Niños, is that it occurs during the June Solstice which ushers in the start of summer. In Cabo, many schools hold family-oriented pot luck gatherings to celebrate Father's Day, while many resorts and restaurants offer Father's Day brunch specials as well as dinner themed discounts to commemorate the event. JUNE 21, FIESTA DE LA MUSICA The 8th Annual San Jose del Cabo Music Festival returns this summer on Saturday, June 21st. Two years ago, The San Jose del Cabo Festival de Musica saw its audience grow to 10,000 people, in which organizers of the summer's most popular event, incredibly presented 160 live bands. A rise in both categories after 7,000 locals and tourists safely partied to a then-record 60 bands in 2012. When the SJDC event first started in 2009, there were only 300 people listening to 14 bands. The entirely free Music Festival kicks off at 5:00 pm, celebrating music in all its different genres and styles that range from rock, blues, banda, ranchero, jazz, reggae, hip-hop, alternative, punk and mainstream pop. The continually growing memorable event happens every

ENTERTAINMENT summer simultaneously worldwide with 120 other countries including Paris, Italy, Rio de Janiero Brazil, Dublin Ireland, Madrid Spain, Quebec Canada, New York New York, Denver Colorado, South Africa, Australia, Paraguay, and India. In Mexico, besides Los Cabos, the boisterous music festivities also take place in Guadalajara, Mexico City, and San Luis, Potosi. The impressive lineup of diverse musicians and bands will be playing in the heart of the historic downtown San José del Cabo. It has become the “can't miss” event of the summer. "I look forward to this every year," states local musician Brian Flynn. For more information please visit www.fiestadelamusicaloscabos.net JUNE 22 DIA DE CORPUS CHRISTI The Feast of Corpus Christi, which is Latin for the Body of Christ, is a religious tradition that celebrates the belief in the body and blood of Jesus Christ. The event in Los Cabos, features Mexicans attending Catholic Church services to receive communion of wafers, wine or grape juice in honor of the body and blood of Jesus. A procession of church leaders and their congregation, marching through the main square in San Jose del Cabo, has long been the most recognized feature of this local and world-wide celebration. JUNE 23-26, 19TH ANNUAL STARS STRIPES FISHING TOURNAMENT The three day long, Stars & Stripes Fishing and Golf Tournament gets its 19th Annual fund-raising event, which benefits several children’s organizations in Southern California, including Big Brothers/Big Sisters, gets underway Thursday, June 23. The popular event is really more of a "fishing, golf, and music festival." This world-class charity fundraiser, held in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, combines “spectacular deep sea fishing and golf on Mexico’s finest courses with beautiful accommodations and topnotch musical entertainment,” states their website. The hugely popular event has raised and donated more than $20 million to worthy youth charities over the course of its 19-year history that began in 1997. More than just a fundraiser, Stars & Stripes creates lasting memories for the organizations it assists, as well as those participating in the event each year. Thursday Night kicks off the weekend festivities with local Salsa music and dancing. On Friday, the live band Tainted Love performs an evening of 1980 hits, phenomenal songs, iconic video projections, and seven of the most charismatic and accomplished musicians you'll ever see. On Saturday evening, the all-star line-up includes The Rembrandts, Tommy

Tuton, Wally Palmer of The Romantics, Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray, Skip Martin of Kool & The Gang, and John Cafferty of Tunes. "Stars & Stripes is about fishing, it's about golf, it's about music, but mostly, it's about the kids!" states their website mantra. For more information about the Jack Nicklaus designed mountain and sea Club Campestre and Tom Fazio's 18 hole designed Chileno Bay Golf Course as well to reserve tickets, please visit www.starsandstripestournament.com or by calling (714) 544-7773.

Second place is $500. The City of Loreto is located 315 miles northeast (or roughly 6 driving hours) from Cabo San Lucas. JUNE 25-26, COYOTE 300 The Coyote 300 is one of five races that are taking place every year in La Paz. Now in its 21st year, the Coyote 300 is a Southern Baja California endorsed race which Bareño Juan Raul Quiroz, president of the Club Coyote, said "We are clubs that organize races like the Dos Mares and the Coyote 300 that draw little attention from the teams competition and that is what motivates us to this project." This year's added participation of the Sur California Motorcycle Association, chaired by Alejandro Serrano Vizcaino, hopes to expand the already popular event to more fans who love a good off road motorcycle category competition that challenges riders, sponsors and their equipment. On twitter, @coyote300 tweeted that while Dos Mares is the biggest and oldest off-road motorcycle race in Baja California Sur (South BCS), the Coyote 300 desert race is the one most liked by the participating riders.
