letter from the EDITOR You are in luck to be in Los Cabos in November! It is my personal favorite month in Cabo. The weather cools down, but the ocean water remains warm and inviting. Although the trees (or cactus?) don't change colors down here, we feel the fall season come along with exciting events and celebrations. Early in the month, Mexico celebrates the deeply cultural Day of the Dead. I invite you to learn more about this colorful tradition inside the pages of this issue. Locally, the Art Walk season in San Jose begins, the San Jose Organic Market opens-up again and the Los Cabos Film Festival brings stars and celebrities to this beautiful corner of the world. On another note, we're very proud to introduce the latest addition to the Destino Los Cabos publishing family: BAJA HOME MAGAZINE — a bi-monthly publication designed as a solution for both Los Cabos residents and visitors who are interested in Baja South’s lifestyle and real estate. Baja Home will be placed as an insert in every single hardcopy of Destino Los Cabos, so look for it inside this issue! Within the pages of Destino Los Cabos you can find useful information that will help you maximize your vacation such as activities, top beaches, maps and important information. Our goal is for you to have the best time possible in Los Cabos. Don't forget that you can find all of our useful information online at: www.DestinoLosCabos.com. Los Cabos (the capes) is located in the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of four main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape. La Paz is the Capital of the state, however, technically it is not part of the municipality of Los Cabos. If you take a look at the Baja Sur map you can see that the highways and towns form a loop. The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet at the very tip of the peninsula. It's very clear when you're on the Pacific side; the waves are much larger and powerful and the winds are stronger. If you go further north along the Pacific side the climate and beaches are very different than on the Sea of Cortez. It's usually a few degrees cooler, which is very pleasant during the warm summer months. In the Pescadero and Todos Santos area, the sand is dark and fine and the color of the water is deep blue. The sand in Sea of Cortez beaches is coarser and the water is a lighter tone of blue. The beaches in La Paz and the surrounding areas are possibly the most beautiful ones in Baja Sur. The white powdery sand and the waist-high water create a spectacular shade of turquoise, the kind you see in postcards. The mountains meet the desert, the desert meets the ocean. The Sierra de la Laguna is a mountain range that lies at the southern end of the peninsula. Above 800 meters in elevation dry forests transition to pine-oak forests. The main climate of the region is arid to semi-arid, however, there are very fertile areas where local farmers grow a variety of fruits and vegetables, especially on the Pacific side. The aquarium of the world. These are the words that Jacques Cousteau used to describe the Sea of Cortez. It is said that eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of varieties of fish and mammals found their way into this “trap” and either stayed in its warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool bottom of the two mile-deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. In the months of January through March, Gray whales make their yearly migration from Alaska to give birth to their young in the shallow and warm waters of the Sea of Cortez. 4

Cabo San Lucas
This tourist friendly town, also just known as “Cabo,” is located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula and is full of entertainment for every age and liking. The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet at Land’s End, where you can observe the beautiful rock formations and the famous Cabo arch. In Cabo San Lucas you can find Medano Beach, the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area, an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night.
San José del Cabo
Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district as well as world-class restaurants. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride to explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.
The Corridor
The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 20 minute drive). Along this road you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, championship golf courses and beautiful views. Have your camera ready and make a roadside stop at the Costa Azul view-point for photo opportunities and a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut).
Todos Santos
Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José due to the breezes coming from the Pacific.
East Cape
People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, an eight fingered coral reef that offers outstanding snorkelling and scuba diving and turtle nesting on the beach. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and folks who just want to get away from it all.
La Paz
La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waist high water at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer.
Loreto
Loreto offers the best of both worlds for tourists who long to escape to an 'authentic-Mexico' with settings that take you back-in-time along with ocean activities that rival that of any other modern coastal city. In Loreto you'll find historic buildings such as the enchanting Mision de Loreto - a mission-style church that was built in 1697 as well as The Islands of Loreto which boasts Mexico's largest marine preserve where dolphins, seals, turtles and sea lions all play in the sea. For those who are partial to adventures on land; there is hiking, biking, and nature-tours that fill up a camera with pictures of radiant natural settings. Loreto is the perfect place for everyone from honeymooners to large families.

BOATING & FISHING
With calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather, some may argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa María Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, there are endless options to fit your needs.
SEASONAL FISHING CHART
BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are several charter companies that can accommodate your needs. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour of the landmark arch, a few hours of fishing, and a cruise to one of our beautiful bays for a swim. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the biggest difference between a yacht and a fishing boat rental is the cost. Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers, pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option. Cruisers accommodate larger groups and are more comfortable when the sea is rough on a windy day. THE MARINAS Marina Cabo San Lucas The area’s largest commercial marina features 380 slips and accommodates vessels of up to 375 feet. Amenities include 24-hour security, electricity and potable water, a fuel dock, and convenient laundry and shower facilities. Puerto Los Cabos Located in La Playita just north of San José del Cabo is the newest marina in the area with 200 available slips 10
www.DestinoLosCabos.com
for boats up to 400 feet. Amenities are similar to Marina Cabo San Lucas, though the boatyard’s 150-ton travel lift can accommodate larger vessels. FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate, no matter what your level of fishing experience is. What to Expect Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or these amenities can be added at an additional cost. It is better to leave early; trips usually begin at 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. It is customary to leave the crew a gratuity of 15% to 20%. Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait, you may buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire may also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

SNORKELLING & SCUBA DIVING
Prepare yourself for an incredible show of nature as you swim side by side with colourful schools of fish, eels, rays, octopus, sea turtles and more. The Sea of Cortez or the “Aquarium of the World” offers many opportunities to experience incredible underwater wildlife.
SCUBA DIVING DESTINATIONS Note: travel time is from the Cabo San Lucas marina. Land’s End Intermediate-Advanced - 50’-60’ Five minutes by boat and you can share the water with sea lions and moray eels, with a sunken boat visible in the Falls. Sand Falls Beginners - Advanced - 30’-100’ Steep sand banks drop sharply into a canyon filled with tropical fish. The canyon runs from the depths of the Cabo San Lucas bay to within 30 feet of the beach. Pelican Rock Beginners - 25’-80’ This large rock attracts many tropical fish and is only five minutes from shore. Neptune’s Finger Advanced - 80’-100’ A spectacular canyon wall dive. Cabeza de Ballena Beginners - 20’-40’ A 25-minute boat ride leads to a dive through large boulders with many fish. El Gavilán Intermediate/Advanced - 70’-100’ This rocky ledge leads into a canyon where groupers and larger fish are often sighted; 35 minutes by boat. Blow Hole Beginners/Advanced - 30’-70’ 35-minutes from San Lucas, or just 10
minutes from Chileno beach, this dive offers rocky valleys presenting a variety of fish. Gordo Banks Advanced - 110’-120’ - A seamount provides views of marlin, hammerheads, skip jacks and at times huge manta rays; one hour from La Playita. Cabo Pulmo Beginner-Advanced - 30’-100’ A one hour drive east of San José or five minutes by boat and you’ll find the only living coral reef in the Sea of Cortez. SNORKELLING SPOTS Cabo offers several methods for snorkelling. You may drive to a local beach and swim out, book a tour with one of the many popular companies, or charter a private boat. Tours are typically two or three hours. Stay away from the Pacific side of the peninsula; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports. Pelican Rock
A quick five-minute ride from the Cabo San Lucas marina or Medano Beach is all it takes to get to this fish-attracting rock.
Lover’s Beach This popular and uniquely-named beach is accessible only by boat. Be on the look-out, however, as the water is not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Bay Snorkel tours regularly visit Santa Maria Bay. If you choose to drive there, it’s an easy swim from the shore to the reef on the right side of the cove. Chileno Bay Snorkelers will find a safe, roped-off area for swimming at this common tour destination. Cabo Pulmo A Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkelling in the area. This eightfingered coral reef is about a 2-hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it!
GOLFING

FLYBOARDING
SURFING
Baja Sur has been a popular surfing destination since the ‘50s. The East Cape is popular for kite surfing and the Pacific coast has several surf breaks where you will find less crowds. See our Baja Sur map and look for this symbol to locate the surf spots mentioned bellow. SAN PEDRITO Level: Advanced. Direction: Right, left. Location: Pacific side right before arriving to Todos Santos. Have you ever had a dream about flying like Superman or maybe swimming like a dolphin? Dreams can come true in Cabo! The FlyBoard is a device connected and powered by a personal watercraft, which allows propulsion underwater and in the air. Users are connected to the board by wakeboard boots, under which, water pressure provides thrust. A certified trainer controls the power and height and you control all the movement. Available at Medano beach or in the Puerto Los Cabos Marina in San José del Cabo.
STAND UP PADDLING
There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just a paddle and a board. Stand up paddling is a great way to see marine life and to get a great workout and while enjoying nature. At Medano beach you can rent boards in several locations. Certain companies offer paddling lessons and some have yoga classes on the board.
KITE SURFING
This sport is most popular in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (the north-east side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kite-boarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than in La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December. Every January, the Lord of the Wind tournament takes place in Los Barriles. 12

ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES Photo courtesy Wild Canyon
Adventure Parks There are several adventure parks in Los Cabos where you and your kids can experience zip-lining, backcountry ATV tours, a camel safari, and more. Zip-lines are appropriate for kids of 8 years and up and be prepared to hike from 5 to 15 minutes from line to line. Most companies include transportation. Parasailing If heights over land are not right for you, try a parasailing trip and gain some altitude to enjoy beautiful views of Cabo while tethered firmly to a speedboat!
Buggy, Atv, Or Bike Rentals There are several local companies which offer ATVs, buggies, and other off-road vehicles for trail and beach cruising. Strap on some goggles and hop behind the wheel of one of these off-road racers for an afternoon of fast-paced fun! Vehicles include typical ATVs or enclosed rail buggies or RZR ATVs. Tours are typically three hours, and drivers must be 16 years of age with a valid drivers’ license. If pedal-powered rides are more your speed, look into renting a mountain bike, beach cruiser, or joining a guided bicycle tour of town. Just make sure to wear a helmet! Horseback Rides, Nature Walks, and Bird Watching Los Cabos (particularly San José del Cabo) offers a number of horseback excursions for all ages. Saddle up for a sunset guided beach ride, venture up a hidden canyon trail, or just sit back in the shade while experienced horse trainers give the kids lessons in horsemanship – there’s something for everyone! San José also boasts a natural estuary and nature preserve. Enjoy a peaceful, self-guided nature walk to observe some of the lushest landscape in the area. Species of flora and fauna are abundant: dozens of species of cactus, lizards, and birds can be spotted on this solitary walk, just a few minutes from downtown. Cactus-lovers may also want to check out the nearby cactus gardens Wirikuta, offering a large variety of cacti laid out in an artful outdoor setting.
Wet Fun Water Park Located about 20 minutes from San José, this water park has shallow pools and small slides for young children, water mushrooms, a pirate ship and a giant bucket that dumps water on the bystanders bellow. For the adrenaline seekers, several fast and large slides stand tall and mighty and offer a great view of the beautiful surrounding mountains. To get there take HWY 1 north from the San José International Airport towards La Paz and East Cape. After about 15 miles, the exit for Caudaño and the water park will be at km 66. Follow this road for a few minutes and you will find the park on your right. Turtle Release Every year, several species of endangered sea turtles nest in the warm sands of Los Cabos. Your family will have the opportunity to help these fragile and tiny creatures make it safely into the sea. Children will learn about the importance of conservation and they will surely enjoy the experience of helping these little friends. Sol de Mayo Waterfall Cascade Located about an hour and a half away from Los Cabos, the Sol de Mayo Oasis is yet another natural beauty of the Southern Baja California region. The hike leads the adventurous to a majestically beautiful oasis where everyone can swim and even dive into the cool, serene waters. Be sure to pack a lunch, and take plenty of water. There are plenty of signs to guide everyone to this wonderful piece of paradise. After arriving in Santiago, turn right up the little hill towards the town square. The cost is $6 US per person to access the easy hike to the clear-water falls. Everything you need to know about Baja Sur

CURRENCY EXCHANGE Dollars are accepted almost everywhere and you will get your change in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate.
ATMs - The easiest way to get pesos is to simply withdraw money from an ATM in Los Cabos. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate (best possible rate). Examples include Banorte, Bancomer, Santander, Banamex, and HSBC. Non-bank ATMs located in the street will charge higher fees. Some ATMs only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing and try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high fees.
CASH OR CARD? Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted, but you often run into cash only places. Always ask beforehand and carry cash. Your bank will most likely charge you international transaction fees if you pay with your card.
GROCERIES - In Cabo San Lucas, Wal-Mart and Costco are good options and easy to get to. You can always find a taxi outside of these stores. San José has a Wal-Mart and Mega. If you just need to grab something quickly, OXXO stores are small, reasonably priced convenient stores located all over town.
HOW DO I DIAL? The local area code is 624 To dial to other countries: 00 + country code (1, 2 or 3 digits) + number From a Mexican land line or cell phone: To a Mexican long distance number: 01 + 3 digit area code + 7 digit number To a Mexican cell phone number: 3 digit area code + 7 digit number To a U.S. phone number: 00 + 1 + 3 digit area code + 7 digit number From your U.S. cell phone: To a Mexican land line or cell phone: 011 52 + 3 digit area code + number To a U.S. phone number: 00 + 1 + 3 digit area code + number Some U.S. cell phone carriers have arrangements with Mexican carriers and when you travel here your cell phone uses their towers. If this is your case, you will have to dial as if you had a Mexican phone. U.S. TOLL FREE NUMBERS (International rates will apply): To a 1 (800): 00 + 1 + 880 + phone number To a 1 (888): 00 + 1 + 881 + phone number To a 1 (877): 00 + 1 + 882 + phone number To a 1 (866): 00 + 1 + 883 + phone number DRIVING Renting a car will allow you to enjoy the freedom of exploring Los Cabos. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there is some organization within the chaos. If you are pulled over by local police for committing a driving infraction, the standard procedure is for them to take your Driver’s License. You will then have to go to the Police Station to pay your ticket and pick-up your license. There are two types of gasoline: Magna, which is regular, and Premium. Lleno (pronounced ye-no) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos is customary. There is a toll road that takes you from the airport to Cabo San Lucas or to the Todos Santos highway. By taking this road you avoid the taxi and shuttle traffic on the main highway. The cost varies from $63.00 to $75.00 pesos, depending on your destination. ALTO STOP

LOS CABOS WILDLIFE
Is it too early to talk about Whales? by Philipp Moser - Naturalist and guide at www.cabotrek.com
I guess it's not. In fact Humpback Whales have for sure already left the cold waters of Alaska to undertake their, over 5.000 miles, journey towards the Baja California Sur Peninsula. And for us at Cabo Trek it's never time to stop talking about the whales, not even in the off season which is the time we use to prepare for the upcoming season. So back to the Whales: we are very curious about what we are going to experience this year. For the past 3 years we experienced increasingly warmer waters each year, and the last season we reached the peak of “El Nino”, it was an incredible season! Although we did see less Humpback Whales and less calves, in exchange we got to see a great variety of animals we usually don't see, such as: Blue Whales, Sperm Whales, Gray Whales, Bryde's Whales, Pilot Whales, Elephant Seals, Leatherback Turtles, and more. So our curiosity about what's coming next is genuine! As “La Nina” , the opposite effect to “El Nino”, is now kicking in and will be a game changer in the waters of the Pacific Ocean. We are already seeing different activity during our snorkelling and diving tours so that we at Cabo Trek foresee an intense 2016/2017 Whale Watching Season in Cabo San Lucas and are counting the days. I also take advantage of this opportunity to announce the beginning of the Whale Shark Season in La Paz! Many have already been spotted and many more are on the way into the bay to start the feeding season. Our Marine biologist are eager to share with you as much knowledge and experience as possible. Ocean conditions are great these days and will be at least till the end of December: water is calm and clear, averaging 85 degrees F. (28 deg. C) water temperatures and 40ft (12m) visibility. If you decide to take on this adventure you may want to add an extra stop to Espiritu Santo Island to swim with the Sea Lions and rest on some of the most beautiful beaches of Baja California Sur. Not to forget: by any chance stop by the “Whale Museum” in La Paz, it's a great opportunity to learn something new about all the different marine life that lives in Baja California Sur. So back to the initial question: I guess it's not too early to talk about Whales, whether it's WHALE Sharks or Humpback WHALES the action in Cabo San Lucas is about to kick off! Make sure to choose a reputable company that makes the most out of your dollar, takes care of your adventure, respects the animals and the environment: see you out there! *

ALL THAT'S FISHY From Land's End to La Paz Monthly Fishing Report by Gary Graham
T
hroughout the summer and into fall of 2016, there have been mostly blue skies and an extraordinary run of smallish blue marlin for our anglers. Then as the season has progressed, the smaller males -- up to 400 pounds – have been joined by the larger females that could reach weights north of 1,000 pounds. Weight records for marlin caught off Cabo San Lucas are not kept officially, but a 1,111-pounder caught in the 1980s is believed to be the heaviest. For the newcomers to Cabo, not all offshore adventures are from the blue and black marlin; there are plenty of striped marlin and sailfish that are of much more manageable size, which are fun to catch, and releasing them after a quick photo taken with the fish in the water is always a preferred option. Yellowfin tuna are another challenging adversary that are currently in the neighborhood from the Pacific side around Land's End and far up into the Sea of Cortez. These critters also come in the small, medium, large and extralarge variety, weighing from a few pounds to the 427-pound giant caught by Guy Yocom of Dana Point, California, on September 18, 2012 and weighed here in Cabo. Recognized as the largest yellowfin in the world ever landed on rod and reel by International Game Fish Association, (IGFA), it earned Yocum a $1,000,000 prize in the Mustad “Hook a Million” promotion.
Another special attraction this month are wahoo; slim and sleek they look and move like mini-torpedos! They are reputed to be among the ten fastest fish in the ocean, traveling at a remarkable 48 mph. They are considered to be one of the tastiest fish by locals and visitors alike. If you want to target these speedsters, tell your Captain in advance. It's usually the early bird that gets the wahoo, in this case. Oh, I almost forgot . . . the largest wahoo ever caught in the world was caught right here in Cabo in May, 2005. Sara Hayward landed that one which weighed 184-pounds! But if you are just a laid-back angler in search of quantity, there are plenty of smaller dorado. The trick is just to have fun with the smaller ones and release them until a 10- to15-pounder shows up; that should be enough for dinner and then some. A few other inshore possibilities for those of you who are looking for a fun morning but will still leave you some time for beaching it, there are the football-variety of yellowfin tuna and skipjack if you are surface fishing, or snapper and cabrilla when fishing on the bottom. Or if you are up to the challenge, go chase an IGFA World Record or a local record. Whatever your fishing goal, you can probably achieve it in the Sea of Cortez. Tight lines to you all! *

Learn About
BAJA'S WILD SIDE by Alex Navarro – Eco-tourism expert
A South Baja Roadtrip One day I want to take a trip around southern Baja and visit these heavenly spots. As easy as that: all you need is some money, some time and a car. Maybe also a snorkeling mask, a surfboard, a skateboard, an ice cooler and an umbrella. And maybe also a tent if you don't want to spend too much on accommodations! First, I would visit the San Jose del Cabo estuary to see the sunrise and walk the beach all the way to the mouth of the estuary. I’ve done it before and it’s one of my favorite sunrise spots. The sea is to your right and the estuary to your left as you face the rising son. The estuary has a series of mystical calm water channels that are flanked by tall palm trees, and the early morning flight of the birds make the place a true paradise. Pelicans, ducks, geese, ospreys and many other bird species can be seen enjoying their habitat. After a liberating stretch and the peaceful sunrise I’d spend some nice beach time and then go for a delicious smoothie and breakfast in downtown San Jose. I’d relax for a while and then head out to the magical East Cape. On my way out of San Jose I make a must-do stop for some road goodies like peanuts, chips, cookies, water, ice, beer, etc., and then head on the new paved road to the East Cape. On my arrival to the cape, I would check out Shipwrecks beach and hang out under the thatched palm umbrellas. Shipwrecks is a great surf spot for those of you who love uncrowded surfing. I’d maybe camp there or drive up the coast on the dirt road for about half an hour to Vinorama, also called Punta Perfecta. This dirt road is a favorite of mine as it goes next to the ocean making the views and sights awesome. By the way, Punta Perfecta is also great for surfing. Here, I would check in at the local Vinorama accommodations and forget about everything for a few days. Spending my days between beach time, chill time, pool time, relax time, eating and sleeping. My next destination on that marvelous coastal dirt road would be Los Frailes bay for some snorkeling. I’d stay at the local cabanas, enjoy a catch of the day and snorkel all morning at the north end of the bay. Lots of hammock time and that’s it. I’d spend many days there and do day trips to Cabo Pulmo reef, just 15 minutes away, for some more stunning snorkeling and some amazing fish tacos at a palapa restaurant . A couple of my day trips would definitely be to La Sirenita beach which is on the southern most point of Cabo Pulmo bay and to La Fortuna botanical gardens which are near La Ribera fishing community. After these unforgettable days of beach time, I would then drive into the base of the Sierra de La Laguna mountain range. But first I’d have some shrimp tacos at an oasis restaurant in Santiago town before going into the dirt trails that lead into the waterfalls and hot springs. I’d rent out a forest cabin for a few nights at either the Fox Canyon or Santa Rita Ranch. This area is very healing, hiking its trails, swimming in its waterfalls and cold pools, and relaxing in its hot springs makes you feel like new. After a few nights of the best star gazing ever, it would be time for some city action. So I would go to La Paz. From Santiago to La Paz the drive on the highway is also very beautiful, first you pass Los Barriles, where an obligatory stop for a fish and chips plate is 18
www.DestinoLosCabos.com
on the itinerary. This drive goes through the mountains first passing along San Antonio town and then El Triunfo town, where there is a peculiar piano museum and a huge 35 meter brick smokestack chimney from the old gold and silver industry of the town. The chimney was designed by Gustav Eiffel, and El Triunfo was once one of the biggest towns of Baja due to the mining jobs. Up to 10,000 miners once lived there. The town was also a cultural centre and that is the reason of the piano museum. Upon arriving in La Paz I’d spend the morning and then sunset at the popular Malecón (Boardwalk), just walking it and taking a few breaks on a bench to sit and observe life. Then have some great lunch somewhere and for sure book a boat day trip to Isla Espiritu Santo which is a beautiful island just off La Paz. I’ve never been to Isla Espiritu Santo before, so when I go I’ll tell you more about it. All I know is that it’s amazing and the snorkeling is great. Another place I’ve never been to is Balandra beach near La Paz and definitely going to make some time to check it out also. I know the coast near La Paz has many wonderful beaches, so visiting as many as possible of them would be in my plans. So now, money and time would be running out, so it would be time to start heading back home to Los Cabos. After leaving La Paz, it would be on to Todos Santos for some ceviche at one of the delicious sea food restaurants, and then some beach time at either Cerritos or San Pedritos, which are some of the wonderful beaches in the area great for surfing and memorable sunsets too. Finally, before heading home, I would try to eat at one of the farmto-table restaurants in Pescadero town, have a skate session at the radical park and buy some fruits at one of the fruit stands on the highway. And on this same beautiful highway, which a friend and I call “The Imax Highway” because of the impressive views, I would take a calm and peaceful one hour drive back home to Los Cabos. That is what I would do. I guess my plan is ready! *

Whale Watching in the Sea of Cortez
DISCOVER
Make a trip of it and visit the Islands of Loreto Situated along the Sea of Cortez, which is otherwise known as “The Aquarium of the World,” the Islands of Loreto offer a chance to get up close with gray and blue whales as they migrate along the Pacific Coast each winter and spring. “Whale watching in The World’s Aquarium is one of those majestic moments that will stick with you forever,” said Owen Perry, Villa Group coowner and president. Whale watching season in Loreto runs from January to April, though whales are often closest to shore and the most active in February. An option is to stay at Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto, a “million star” resort known for its starladen sky, genuine hospitality, and incredible views of the Sea of Cortez and Sierra de la Giganta mountains. Offered through Danzante Tours (the resort’s in-house tour agency), guests can choose a four-hour island tour aboard a comfortable APEX boat to Danzante and Del Carmen islands, whale watching included. Guests can look for sei whales, sperm whales, belugas, humpback whales, orcas and the majestic blue whale (largest animal to have ever lived on Earth) right in the Loreto
Bay National Marine Park! The excursion includes a picnic on the beach, with optional hiking, snorkeling and leisure time on the islands, as well as an expert guide who can describe the surrounding habitat and point out exciting sightings of dolphins, sea lions, exotic fish, and of course, whales. The other option includes an eight-hour voyage that kicks off with a scenic drive in an airconditioned van across the Baja Peninsula to the Pacific side of Magdalena Bay called López Mateos, the ideal spot to get an up-close view of gray whales. Each year gray whales migrate nearly 4,000 miles on a journey from Alaska to get to Magdalena Bay to bear their young in warm placid waters. Once there, a knowledgeable guide will lead guests on a two-hour tour of the bay. Guests will learn about the lifestyle and habits of gray whales and interact with them in a safe environment as they play, jump and float nearby, curious newborns by their side. After the excursion, voyagers are treated to a delicious, local lunch in López Mateos, a tiny authentic fishing village, before heading back to Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto. Special packages can be booked now through February 28. 19
ART&CULTURE
In Mexico,
it has only been in recent years that Halloween has been celebrated, as the more traditional holiday is a beautiful one called Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead). It is a celebration of our loved ones passed, where we create incredibly intricate altars in memory of our precious family and friends who have passed on to the other side.
This spiritual celebration brings families together, where they join at their loved one’s resting place in the cemetery – the families bring offerings of food and beverage, precious objects, and traditional artifacts such as decorated sugar skulls and clay bowls; the favorite foods and photos of the deceased; flowers and candles; religious artifacts, prayers, blessings, and incense; a special and traditional pan de muerto and more – each altar is unique in its own way based on each family’s beliefs and celebrations. Families gather, sometimes for the entire night, by their loved one’s grave to share food and drinks, play music, and recount stories of their beloved. As a child growing up in Mexico, we celebrated Día de Los Muertos every year at school, where we were taught the importance of this holiday. Each class would build a beautiful altar, where we were invited to bring photos of any of our departed family or friends and offerings to honor the altar. We would build the altars around the school courtyard for viewing, but also as a fun way to learn about the traditions – to see who could build the most traditional and most creative altar.

The celebration is not only to honor the departed, but also to call forth their spirits to visit those left behind. The food and drink offerings are meant to entice the spirits, and the music, flowers, incense, and stories to please them and bring them joy. *

Pan de muerto (bread of the dead) is a type of sweet roll traditionally baked during the weeks leading up to the Day of the Dead. It is said that the shapes resembling bones represent the lost one and the ball on top is a tear drop to represent the sorrow. The bones are placed in a circle to represent the circle of life. TRY IT! You can find Pan de Muerto at most grocery stores such as Walmart and Mega or go to a local bakery.
An example of a día de muertos altar in which family members place the favorite items of their deceased loved ones. SEE IT! Witness the yearly altar contest in San Jose del Cabo's main plaza on November 2nd.
The Cempasúchil (sem-pah-soo-cheel) flower is used as a decoration in the Day of the Dead festivities. Its warm and bright color brings life to the commemorative ofrendas (altars). BUY IT! Join the festive spirit and decorate your villa or hotel room with these flowers that you can buy at most markets and grocery stores.
November kicks off our “high season” social life with many exciting and fun events benefiting our worthy nonprofits in the months to come. It’s also a chance for visitors to mingle with Cabo society and experience the insider’s Los Cabos. The Los Cabos Humane Society’s (LCHS) annual Gala fundraiser, Dressed to the K9’s, is coming on strong Friday November 11 at the Sheraton Grand Los Cabos. Considered the “seen and be seen” event of the fall season, this year’s attendees will indulge in fine French cuisine from Executive Chef Manuel de Luca, bid on silent auction items and enjoy a fashion show and stellar entertainment, all to help meet its annual fundraising goals. Many visitors aren’t aware that the LCHS is privately funded and relies solely on donations to provide “SPCA” services. Its devoted staff and a cadre of dedicated volunteers provide spay-neuter clinics, animal advocacy and rescue, education, adoption, and shelter at its CSL Animal Center. The Center houses, on average, 70 dogs and 45 cats and performs spay/neuter mobile clinics throughout Los Cabos’ most marginalized neighborhoods. In 2015, the LCHS cared for over 3000 animals, performed 3,500 spay/ neuter surgeries, saw more than 400 adoptions and presented its Animal Awareness Educational Program to thousands of local students and families. This year’s K9 theme is The Red and White Gala – A Night in Paris, with a French menu from the Sheraton’s acclaimed Executive Chef Manuel de Luca. Featured entertainment is LA “Nusoul” vocalist Jamila, with Kevin O’Neal. Jamila will perform “La Vie En Rose", a special K9 adaptation of her much applauded tour, “A Musical Journey.” If can’t make this year’s K9 but you’d like to help out, pet food, leashes and collars and good ol’ cash donations are always needed. Dog walkers are welcome early morning or late afternoon: It’s the perfect way to spend family or group time on the trails with a four-legged friend, or cuddle with a kitty in the cattery. For tickets and K9 info, or for more on the LCHS, go to www.loscaboshumanesociety.com If you love the links, Casa Hogar’s Fore the Boys (and soon to be girls) golf tournament is where you should be Saturday November 12. Held at Jack Nicklaus’ acclaimed Palmilla links with a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start, this is a chance to golf one of Los Cabos’ legendary courses for just $149 US. Your entry fee includes 18 holes of golf, breakfast and lunch, prizes and a raffle, with all proceeds to Casa Hogar. Initially founded as a plan for a refuge for orphans and boys from troubled homes in 1990, Casa Hogar’s facility opened in CSL’s Reforma “Colonia” in early 2008. Providing a safe haven and set in a camp-like environment, in early 2017 it will soon expand next door with Phase 1 of the girls’ dormitories. Like most, the nonprofit receives no government assistance. The boys attend a combination of public, private and special education schools and in-house tutoring. Along with 24-hour care from a staff of 18, and a psychologist, they are readied for adoption or a return to their families. Girls will be integrated into the same very successful program. Casa Hogar receives many visitors, from local volunteers to visiting individuals and groups looking to improve the lives of children, who no fault of their own, find themselves alone and needing a loving and nurturing environment. Executive Director Jayson Stirrup notes that the boys, through their education and life experiences, have a strong sense of giving back. The boys hosted an “Open House” this past October with invites to teachers, friends and local sponsors. With a modest entrance fee, they donated the proceeds to other local children in need. “Casa Hogar Girls” will reunite sister siblings, who now see their brothers just monthly, and will provide the same care to orphaned girls in need. The goal is to provide for up to 40 girls and teens with the same advantages Casa Hogar has provided for these very fortunate boys. The Return of Art Walk Season By Sabrina Lear
E
ach Thursday evening from November through June, the captivating streets of historic San José del Cabo’s vibrant Art District are alive with color and creativity. Hidden behind the church off Plaza Mijares, the main square, the area is closed to traffic from 5 to 9 p.m. for Art Walk. Mingle in the many galleries with a glass of complementary wine or spirits while taking in the scene and enjoying the very friendly atmosphere. Safe and suitable for families, it’s a chance to meet artists, attend new exhibits and experience an unforgettable side of Los Cabos that many visitors miss. Art Walk was created by the Gallery District Association to attract art lovers and tourists from the main square, where the Jardin del Arte group exhibits, not to be confused with Art Walk. The 14 member galleries are each recognizable by distinctive plaques out front. Exhibiting a wide range of genres from paintings and sculpture to ceramics, folk art, photography and jewelry it’s easy to fall in love with a favorite piece. Along with the 14, are other shops with top local folk artists and artisans.
22
www.DestinoLosCabos.com
The Art District is compact and easy to walk. From Plaza Mijares, cross the street to the church and turn right. You’ll find paintings, pottery and folk art at La Sacrístia and an eclectic mix of established Mexican artists at Patricia Mendoza further down, on the corner of Calle Obregon. Up Obregon, view contemporary art from Basque artist Enrique Bascón. Corsica’s museum quality fine art and sculptures are from renowned Mexican Masters and upcoming talents. Desértica’s eclectic contemporary collection, and exquisite Paquime pottery from Chihuahua at Mata Ortiz are next, bringing you to Calle Morelos. Turn left for some of Baja’s top contemporary and abstract artists at Leah Porter’s Casa Dahlia, a few doors up. Back on Obregon, El Armario’s Mexican folk art is on the corner along with an al fresco coffee shop, followed by Muvezi’s African Shona sculptures and artwork up to the left. Next door, Ivan Guaderrama’s contemporary Christian paintings and sculptures focus on expressions of love, faith, and music through themes of angels, hearts and abstracts. Old Town’s seasoned artists capture the color, culture, and light of Baja. At Calle Guerrero, turn left for artist Ida Gustafson’s Ida Victoria, a two story high-end gallery with a colorful and eclectic collection of original art and sculpture from North American and Mexican artists as well as a custom frame studio.
If you’re driving from Cabo San Lucas or the Corridor, plan to park on Calle Centenario, the boulevard that runs behind the downtown area. For easiest access, park close to the foot of Morelos Street (look for El Encanto Suites on the corner) and walk from there. You’ll immediately be drawn into a charming and festive atmosphere. Stop at Plaza Paulina to visit Julian Garcia’s Arte for paintings and distinctive sculptures in bronze, steel and stone. International abstract painter and sculptor Frank Arnold is around the corner on Comonfort, facing Centenario. Consider arriving early for Art Walk and staying for dinner. The Art District boasts some of Los Cabos’ finest restaurants and many feature live music during Art Walk. Popular spots are La Dolce, Jazmin’s, H Restaurant, La Lupita and Baja Brewing. The Art District can be very busy Thursday nights and reservations are strongly recommended. If you miss out on Art Walk, visit the Art District any time, most galleries and shops are open daily, generally from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. or thereabouts. Learn more at www.artcabo.com *

Imagine floating in a turquoise bay with pink sand, snorkelling with a whale shark or riding some epic waves, each beach offers something unique. Here is a list of the must-see beaches to help you decide which one is for you or just visit them all!
Cabo San Lucas Along the Corridor If you’re looking for the action, here it is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2-mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars, right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and family-friendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. Numerous activities and water sports are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the best spot to do it. Its stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see.
LAS VIUDAS
Las Viudas (The Widows) beach is not visible from the road and is possibly the most private beach you will find on this list. What makes it unique are the rock formations that create small pools and coves where you can have a private and peaceful beach day. This beach is swimmable with caution, but if you find your own pool you can avoid the waves. Location: Turn right at Km. 12.5 of the corridor and follow the dirt road down to the beach. There is a sign that reads “Las Viudas” but keep your eyes peeled; the entrance sneaks up on you. Tips: You won’t find any services or vendors so bring all your beach essentials with you.
tional Marine Preserve offers. This family-friendly beach is relatively secluded; therefore, you rarely run into beach vendors. However, the beach does have brand new bathrooms and palapas. Location: Travelling west from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the sign which reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. Tips: Swim from the shore towards the rocks on the right side of the beach for a great snorkeling experience.
San Jose del Cabo PALMILLA
CHILENO
Location: In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. The beach is accessible by foot through the east side of the marina or via Avenida del Pescador. Tips: Be prepared to be approached by souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “No, gracias.” Prices don’t vary much from one water sports rental place to another. Visit Lover’s Beach while you’re there.
LOVER’S BEACH
Getting there is an adventure in itself, due to the fact that it is reachable only by boat or kayak. The easiest way is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Prices are around $15.00 USD per person. Ask your captain to cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Once you arrive, you’ll notice the striking rock formations and caves. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean; the locals call this Divorce Beach. This side is very dangerous for swimming because of the powerful undertow, so swim on Lover’s Beach only. Location: Land’s End beside the famous arch. This beach is accessible only by boat. Tips: There are a couple of vendors who offer beer and water, but you won’t find any other services. A good idea is to spend the day at Medano Beach and take an hour or two to go to Lover’s Beach; this should be time enough to explore this natural wonderland. 24
www.DestinoLosCabos.com
Chileno is a very popular location for snorkelling, swimming or just spending the day under the newlyinstalled palapas. You’ll find tide pools at the east end of the beach and beautiful reefs offering excellent snorkelling and scuba diving. This is the only beach with public restrooms and it has plenty of palapas for shade. Location: Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near Km. 14 of the main highway. Tips: If you visit Chileno on a weekend, make an effort to arrive early; snorkelling visibility is often better in the mornings, you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours and, if you beat the crowds, you’ll be guaranteed a palapa to yourself for much-needed shade. Bring snorkelling gear!
SANTA MARIA
Santa Maria offers a stunning horseshoe cove with coarse coral-colored sand and abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkelling and scuba diving that this Na-
Palmilla beach is known for its family-friendly calm waters and a mile-long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes, the One&Only Hotel and the world renowned Jack Nicklaus Ocean Nine golf course. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter, but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis. Location: Take the Palmilla ramp exit at Km. 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel. Tips: Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa, or bring your own umbrella. No services are available here.
COSTA AZUL
If what you’re looking for is a good surf spot you can find it here without driving out of town. Head over to Zipper’s for a surf session and lunch and beers at the restaurant. To the west of Zippers is Acapulquito beach where the Cabo Surf Hotel and Mike Doyle Surf School are located. You can find surf shops in the area where you can rent surf and
stand-up paddle boards and set up lessons. The surf is bigger during the summer, and in the winter this is a good spot for snorkelling and swimming. Location: Exit into the arroyo at Km. 28 via the Costa Azul Bridge. Tips: Swimming with caution is possible in this area but keep an eye out for surfers.
On the Pacific CERRITOS
Cerritos beach is a popular surf spot and swimming here is relatively safe. The scenic 45-minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant is a perfect spot to spend a relaxing day, maybe even get a massage on the beach. If you want to be active, you can take a surf lesson at Baja Surf Camp or rent surf and boogie boards at the Costa Azul Surf Shop. Location: Exit at Km. 66 of the Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos Highway. Watch the markers and look for the signs. Drive about 1.7 miles to the beach area. Tips: Lounge chairs, restrooms, food and drinks are available at The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant. The ocean currents are strong and the waves can be quite powerful on a big day, so swim with caution.
La Paz
BALANDRA
A stunning bay that will take your breath away. You can walk back and forth in the bay in waist high water that is crystal clear with shades of blue turquoise. Follow the shore towards the north-east side and you will find the famous “mushroom rock” as well as other interesting rock formations. Pictures just don’t do it justice. You won’t regret visiting Playa Balandra! Location: About 30 minutes from the boardwalk in La Paz. Simply follow the main drag along the boardwalk, then through Costa Baja Golf Course and continue to wind around the coast and through the mountains until you see the signs for the beach. Tips: No bathroom facilities. There is a truck where you can buy water and snacks, but it is recommended to bring your own in case they are closed. There are palapas, but not a lot. You can rent kayaks and snorkel gear.
Loreto
ISLA CORONADO
A wildlife reserve where visitors may anchor, snorkel, scuba and camp. The panga ride usually includes a cruise around the island where it’s very common to see sea lions, seals and even sea otters. The only swimmable beach on the island has pristine white sand and shallow crystal clear turquoise water, which creates ideal snorkelling conditions. Coronado Island is the ideal place for an adventure or to simply immerse yourself in nature and relax. Location: About 7 miles or 30 minutes (on boat) northeast of Loreto. Tips: To get to Coronado Island you must take a boat or a panga. You will find pangas in Loreto’s Marina that you can hire to take you. The best option is to ask your concierge to arrange this for you. There are no services or restaurants on the beach. There are several large palapas with tables and benches and also an ecorestroom. Bring hiking shoes if you plan to explore the area. Bring Snorkelling gear!

Imagine a beautiful grass garden full of wonderful trees, filled with colorful canopies all around and magical people selling their soulfully made products and art pieces. That is the Mercado Organico (Organic Market) in San Jose del Cabo. And the amazing news is that its season reopens on Saturday November 5th. The Organic Market runs every Saturday through the high tourism season which is from November to May. It is located next to downtown San Jose del Cabo inside Huerta Maria. This area is part of the amazing Estuary of San Jose and therefore the scenery is abundant with palm trees and birdlife. As soon as you arrive you will be greeted by the friendly parking staff. You’ll get out of your car, stretch and smile and begin your peaceful walk towards the grass field probably thinking to yourself what a nice day it is. Blue sunny skies are perfect to enjoy the market’s many offerings. Although, there is plenty of shade around, either under the trees or numerous canopies, maybe take a hat to keep cool. There are portable bathrooms and also free drinking water at one of the stands, so you can make your visit as long as you want. The market opens from 9 am to 3 pm and a couple times a year it closes later due to special events like its Organic Carnaval which was held in February and its Organic Festival in April which also commemorated the Day of the Earth. Throughout the season and also on those special events, fantastic activities take place like yoga sessions, circus and juggling performances, drum circles, dancing, musical acts and djs, conferences of many topics and themes, poetry reading, arts and crafts lessons and that is not all. Even hula hoops, capoeira, salsa classes and games for kids from inflatable bouncers to old school marbles, bow and arrow, tightrope/ slackline and more! Ok, so you are walking and thinking what a nice sunny Saturday it is when you are thrown your first option. Take a 26

hard left and go straight for the food stands? That is the decision you want to make if you arrive very hungry. Or just pace straight calmly through to the other stands and start your browsing and maybe buying journey. But if you make a hard right you can also find great stands to satisfy your tummy, as the market is lined with food stands on both sides and the rest of the vendors are dotted and lined throughout the grounds. If jewelry, arts and crafts are your desire, a sea of creation abounds. Many different styles, techniques and pieces are presented, from earrings, bracelets, masks, clothing, bags, accessories, books, posters, photographs, paintings, sculptures, and even furniture. The jewelry stand tables are filled with pieces made up of the most incredible stones, gems, metals, feathers, seeds, shells, fossils, etc. Everything is produced by the local community. That is the profile of the market, everything sold at the market has to be crafted or produced locally and organically grown. As is the case for all the edible products, from the menus offered at the food stands to the produce sold at the farmers’ stands. The vendors do their best effort to fulfill the rules and in some cases flexibility is allowed regarding some basic ingredients used for their recipes. So ask around to inform yourself and meet these wonderful cooks, chefs and bakers . If you’re hungry the choices are great. Anything and everything from

pizza slices, veggie burgers, hamburgers, quesadillas, tostadas, ceviche, tacos, paninis, ice cream, cookies, brownies, cupcakes, coffee, smoothies, ice cold teas, coconut water, fruit juices and drinks. And also that friendly water stand where you can quench your thirst with a free glass of their alkaline water, plus one of my favorite beverage tables, the kombucha stand. Now, if you wish to find ingredients to take home, this is also the place to shop for healthy and delicious things. From organic lettuces, fruits and veggies, like cherry tomatoes, squash, beets, kale, spinach, lemon grass, dried mangos, and much more. To herbs, spices, agave and bee honey, organic cheeses, eggs and meats like chicken and sometimes smoked fish. For sure, you will run across a charming vendor offering an amazing dish they’ve created of something very savory and good for you too. If you have a property here in Los Cabos, at the market you will find the perfect plants for your garden. Maybe take home a basil plant or even a baby mandarin or mango tree. And for those of you whom are here on vacation, you will find the perfect souvenir for yourself and those perfect gifts for your loved ones. One or the endless great things about the Organic Market is that it makes the local community integrate in a wonderful and positive way, as well as a magical interaction between locals and visitors. And I was almost forgetting, you can get a back massage too! So see you next Saturday at the Organic Market for an enchanting experience, it is perfect for the family and friends of all ages. *

DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS (DAY OF THE DEAD)
Día de Los Muertos is Mexico's national holiday which personifies the celebration by families and friends to remember loved ones who have passed away and commemorate their lives in prayer and party and is most commonly recognized by the painted skulls which symbolize its importance to the history and traditions of Mexican culture. Throughout most of the Republic of Mexico, November 1 is a day set aside to honor children and infants, (Día de los Inocentes and Día de los Angelitos), whereas deceased adults are honored on November 2 the "Day of the Dead". During these 2 to 4 day-long festivities, Mexican citizens here and on American soil go to cemeteries, building private altars containing photos, foods and memorabilia of the dearly departed and often times will take to cleaning and decorating the grave-sites with offerings which include orange Mexican marigolds called cempasúchil (An Aztec Nahuatl term for "twenty flowers"). The Department of Culture (Departamento de Cultura in San Jose del Cabo) first organized and incorporated an Altar Contest in 2009 and an artistic festival for Day of the Dead in San Jose's main square. Halloween weekend as everyone considers it now, is filled with costume contest events in San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo complete with fun drink specials. Some of the more popular establishments like Mandala, Baja Junkie and Squid Roe have something planned for the holiday year after year. "It's a unique Mexican event that truly captures the spirit of the country, " noted Juan Romero Tatemura Quesada, owner of Cabo Lounge Bar in San Lucas on Marina Boulevard. "I think it's the one holiday that has given fame and popularity to skeletons and the way they're represented in humorous ways makes it a fun time in Mexico.'' 32

Mexican Revolution Day During Thanksgiving week in Los Cabos, November 20, is recognized as a National Holiday in Mexico with the traditional closing of banks and government
offices. The date holds a special place in every Mexican's heart as the beginning of the Mexican Revolution of 1910 in which the poorest of people rose up and took arms against the 34 year reign of corruption and subjugation under the the rule of Dictator/President, Porfirio Diaz; who was in power from 1876 to 1910. Francisco I. Madero, Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata are the three most famous figures associated with Mexican history as the core group of men who went on to launch the ultimate rebellion against DĂaz, known as the Mexican Revolution or even as the poetic, "The Wind That Swept Mexico." The Civil Revolution of Mexico lasted from November 20, 1910 and remained a decade long struggle for equal rights and freedom, ending in 1920. This armed conflict is often categorized as the most important socio-political event in the country of Mexico and one of the greatest upheavals of the 20th century. The end result being, the Mexican Constitution of 1917 at the expense of over one million lives. In both San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo the day is filled with parades and rodeos to commemorate the Mexican Revolution. During years in which the 20th falls on a weekend, like it does this 2016 on Sunday, the national holiday is recognized on Monday, November 21st. Everything you need to know about Baja Sur
