Everything you need to know about Baja Sur

Los Cabos (the capes) is located in the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of four main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape. La Paz is the Capital of the state, however, technically it is not part of the municipality of Los Cabos. If you take a look at the Baja Sur map you can see that the highways and towns form a loop. The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet at the very tip of the peninsula. It's very clear when you're on the Pacific side; the waves are much larger and powerful and the winds are stronger. If you go further north along the Pacific side the climate and beaches are very different than on the Sea of Cortez. It's usually a few degrees cooler, which is very pleasant during the warm summer months. In the Pescadero and Todos Santos area, the sand is dark and fine and the color of the water is deep blue. The sand in Sea of Cortez beaches is coarser and the water is a lighter tone of blue. The beaches in La Paz and the surrounding areas are possibly the most beautiful ones in Baja Sur. The white powdery sand and the waist-high water create a spectacular shade of turquoise, the kind you see in postcards. The mountains meet the desert, the desert meets the ocean. The Sierra de la Laguna is a mountain range that lies at the southern end of the peninsula. Above 800 meters in elevation dry forests transition to pine-oak forests. The main climate of the region is arid to semi-arid, however, there are very fertile areas where local farmers grow a variety of fruits and vegetables, especially on the Pacific side. The aquarium of the world. These are the words that Jacques Cousteau used to describe the Sea of Cortez. It is said that eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of varieties of fish and mammals found their way into this “trap” and either stayed in its warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool bottom of the two mile-deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. In the months of January through March, Gray whales make their yearly migration from Alaska to give birth to their young in the shallow and warm waters of the Sea of Cortez. 6

Cabo San Lucas

This tourist friendly town, also just known as “Cabo,” is located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula and is full of entertainment for every age and liking. The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet at Land’s End, where you can observe the beautiful rock formations and the famous Cabo arch. In Cabo San Lucas you can find Medano Beach, the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area, an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night.

San José del Cabo

Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district as well as world-class restaurants. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride to explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.

The Corridor

The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 20 minute drive). Along this road you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, championship golf courses and beautiful views. Have your camera ready and make a roadside stop at the Costa Azul view-point for photo opportunities and a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut).

Todos Santos

Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José due to the breezes coming from the Pacific.

East Cape

People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, an eight fingered coral reef that offers outstanding snorkelling and scuba diving and turtle nesting on the beach. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and folks who just want to get away from it all.

La Paz

La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waist high water at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer.

Loreto

Loreto offers the best of both worlds for tourists who long to escape to an 'authentic-Mexico' with settings that take you back-in-time along with ocean activities that rival that of any other modern coastal city. In Loreto you'll find historic buildings such as the enchanting Mision de Loreto - a mission-style church that was built in 1697 as well as The Islands of Loreto which boasts Mexico's largest marine preserve where dolphins, seals, turtles and sea lions all play in the sea. For those who are partial to adventures on land; there is hiking, biking, and nature-tours that fill up a camera with pictures of radiant natural settings. CURRENCY EXCHANGE Dollars are accepted almost everywhere and you will get your change in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate.

ATMs - The easiest way to get pesos is to simply withdraw money from an ATM in Los Cabos. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate (best possible rate). Examples include Banorte, Bancomer, Santander, Banamex, and HSBC. Non-bank ATMs located in the street will charge higher fees. Some ATMs only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing and try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high fees.

CASH OR CARD? Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted, but you often run into cash only places. Always ask beforehand and carry cash. Your bank will most likely charge you international transaction fees if you pay with your card.

GROCERIES - In Cabo San Lucas, Wal-Mart and Costco are good options and easy to get to. You can always find a taxi outside of these stores. San José has a Wal-Mart and Mega. If you just need to grab something quickly, OXXO stores are small, reasonably priced convenient stores located all over town.

Driving in Mexico might be intimidating, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there is some organization within the chaos. If you are pulled over by local police for committing a driving infraction, the standard procedure is for them to take your Driver’s License. You will then have to go to the Police Station to pay your ticket and pick-up your license. There are two types of gasoline: Magna, which is regular, and Premium. Lleno (pronounced ye-no) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos is customary. There is a toll road that takes you from the airport to Cabo San Lucas or to the Todos Santos highway. By taking this road you avoid the taxi and shuttle traffic on the main highway. aja California Sur is one of the best world destinations to see whales. The Sea of Cortez (“the world’s aquarium,” as it was referred to by the famous French explorer Jacques Cousteau) and the Pacific coast of the peninsula have 80% of all marine mammals found in Mexican waters. During the winter, Mexico is not only a great place for people to escape the cold weather but for whales as well! Whales undergo seasonal migrations from higher latitudes (where they feed during the summer) heading south to the waters of Baja California to mate and give birth. The whale watching season officially starts on 15th December with February being the peak month for sighting whales. The Blue whale, the largest animal that has ever lived on the planet, is one of the species found in this area. During their southward migration, they often follow a direct route along the Californian and Mexican coast. During the months of March and April, Blue whales are often sighted in the deep central basins and along the western side of the gulf of California. During their northward migration Blue whales sometimes hang out in the coastal waters of central and northern Baja California. For a short time in the months of February and March you can boat from Cabo San Lucas to Loreto for an incredible encounter with the biggest living mammal on the planet, as well as to explore the Baja peninsula a bit more in depth. The Gray whale is another species that appears in these waters. Their population in the North Atlantic waters has become extinct, however, it’s still possible to sight them in the North Pacific waters. They are known for their long annual migration, 15.000-20.000 km (roundtrip) starting every year in the fall, with females in late pregnancy appearing first. By mid-February, most of them have arrived having already given birth to their calves around or within the lagoons of the Magdalena Bay region. The gray whale's migration back to the feeding grounds is divided in two phases: the first consists of newly pregnant females who go first to maximize feeding time, followed by adult females and males, then juveniles. ing lagoons are to the recovery of the gray whale. Mexico is the only nation to provide important habitat protection for the eastern population. The gray whale has a curious behaviour when approaching boats with whale watchers trying to pet them. Because of this temperament they are known as “friendly whales”. This results in a unique opportunity to visit an area off the beaten path, submersed in almost untouched nature, where fisherman turn into skilled whale watchers and guests are blessed with close encounters with gray whales that are to be found only along the Mexican coast. Humpback whales steal the show during the whale watching season. Despite being one of four separate breeding grounds in the North Pacific, Baja is a popular destination for Humpbacks year-round. Humpback whales also frequent Baja during the winter months for mating and nursery. Humpbacks are known for their frequent acrobatic behaviour and their occasional tendency to approach vessels. Male humpback whales sing to attract the females in the winter. All whales in a given population sing essentially the same song. They also coordinate changes to their song over time, however, there is little information about this practice. In addition, breaching, blowing, spyhopping, fluking and/or slapping head, tail and pectoral fins in the water are behaviours usually sighted every day on whale watching tours. February is one of the best months to sight humpback whales in Cabo. Males usually remain in the area for a longer period attempting to obtain repeated mating. Their “aggressive” behaviour when competing for females are often witnessed by aerial activities. Females with their calves are also regularly sighted during this month. There are other species, such as fin whale, Bryde’s whale, sperm whale and dolphins that are also possible to sight in Baja California. Whale watching is very important; it not only provides great educational and social benefits, but it makes an important contribution to the economy of many countries promoting further whaling education and research. *

Off the Beaten Path by Alex Navarro, Baja Adventure Expert

If you want to do the extra ordinary adventure in Baja, here are some suggestions to make your vacation totally different from the rest. How about a beautiful kayak trip from Medano bay in San Lucas to Lover’s beach at Land’s End? It is a pretty easy outing, only about 15 minutes each way. Be very attentive to all water vessels like parasailing and fishing boats, jet skis, etc. The trip is wonderful, you can check out the famous arch and sea lion colony next to it. Near Lover’s Beach you can paddle around Neptune’s finger and Pelican rock. Once you arrive at Lover’s beach make sure you drag your kayak high up the beach. Maybe pack a lunch and an umbrella to stay a little longer, or you can find some great shade next to the tall rocks. The cool thing about this beach is that you can cross to the other side and arrive at a beach in the Pacific Ocean, which is called Divorce beach. Swimming is not recommended at Divorce beach since it has extremely dangerous conditions, but possible at Lovers’ beach if the conditions allow. You can rent a kayak at many establishments in Medano bay. For a more advanced level ocean kayaker, you would definitely want to contract a specialized outfitter and make a kayak trip from Widow’s beach to El Chileno beach, making a stop at Santa Maria bay, all of which are within the tourist corridor. This is an hour plus kayaking trip depending on conditions and fitness. Some whale watching could happen for sure during the winter season and the snorkeling is very good at both Santa Maria bay and El Chileno beach and reef. Another great kayak trip is from Cabo Pulmo reef to La Sirenita beach at the south end of Cabo Pulmo bay. The snorkeling here is outstanding. You can rent a kayak and snorkeling gear at many Cabo Pulmo establishments. If you are a very good kayaker you might try to make it all the way to the sea lion colony or even to Los Frailes bay, but check conditions very carefully, especially the winds 14

because they could make the return trip very difficult. Also, plan your trip early in the morning and an early return as well. Some of my most memorable kayaking experiences have been here. This area is magical. For an amazing bouldering hike you might want to go to “Cajon de Yeneka”. A specialized Los Cabos adventure outfitter is also recommended for this hike. The site is a little north of San Jose del Cabo and south of Miraflores and El Caduaño. I love this hike because you start off crossing a narrow, very high and spectacular canyon as you come to the first waterfall of many more. You can travel many kilometres up the “arroyo” and creeks, but it is important to know this is not a trail hike. This is semi/dry upstream river bouldering and can get technical at times. So make sure you take great outdoor shoes and your hiking back pack with water and food. Your guide should bring a first aid kit. The higher you go the more astonishing scenery, flora and fauna you will encounter, as well as many cold pools within the route that will cool you down. A hike I have never done but would like to, and my friends who have done it have told me is very nice, is to hike from the San Lucas Marina area to Lover’s beach. One way is to park at Paseo de la Marina boulevard and walk up Solmar avenue and start your hike there. The other way is to park at the same spot and walk to the beach to the old cannery “La Empacadora” and start the hike there. They say the views are amazing as the hike has some elevation and faces both the Pacific Ocean and the San Lucas Medano bay. It is not recommended for kids under 10 years old and older adults as some spots require slight rock climbing. Also not recommended is to get too close to the ocean at any point of the trail. Maybe take a bathing suit and swim at Lover’s beach to refresh when you arrive there! *

rom the lofty perch of the par-3 17th hole at Danzante Bay Golf Club, one can view a Sea of Cortez panorama that Jacques Cousteau once proclaimed "The Aquarium of the Word." The five islands of Loreto create a sanctuary for more than 1,000 species of marine life, and in 1996, the area was declared federally protected as Loreto Bay National Marine Park. Danzante Bay Golf Club might just be as diverse. This new Rees Jones' design just celebrated the grand opening of 11 ocean-facing holes that feature a stunning, 178yard par 3 that's every bit as good as no. 7 at Pebble Beach Golf

Links. "I have no doubt that no. 17 will be one of the best in the world," Jones said. The transition from the uphill 16th fairway and green to the 17th tee is filled with anticipation. You crest a ridge and discover a dazzling vista of the Sea of Cortez 250 feet below the tee. Your stroke is to a peninsula green surrounded by a horseshoe-shaped bunker. The putting surface seems to cling to a rock plateau with distant islands in sight. Scan the horizon, and you might see a breaching whale. The downhill 18th hole -- a par-4 journey of 520 yards from the back tee -- is a fitting finale to this fun quest. Diverse landscape might be Danzante Bay Golf Club's legacy "This is the most diverse landscape I've ever had the opportunity to work with," said Jones, whose redesign of Torrey Pines South and Bethpage Black got him the moniker of "The U.S. Open doctor." This land features dunes, mountains, foothills, desert, arroyos and ocean holes. And the final seven valley holes, set to open in a year, remind you of a Jurassic Park journey. It is very much like an Arizona with giant saguaros (called cardรณn cactus in Mexico) and rugged terrain minus an unspoiled ocean. The 7,107-yard, par-72 course also features a nine-hole putting course inspired by the famed Himalayas Course in St. Andrews, Scotland, where families can enjoy playing together. And the practice facility is an unusual, uphill, reverse funnel into the mountain face. So why did Danzante Golf Club open with just 11 holes completed? "People staying at the hotel kept asking to play," said hotelier Owen Perry, owner of the Villa Group. "So one day this February we did, and everyone who played loved it and wanted to play again." "Most of the world's most popular golf courses that have stood the test of time were built slowly," Jones said. "Golf holes aren't really designed and built from a plan -- you feel them in the land. This land is so good it tells us what to do. The holes fit the land naturally." The golf course is one that both avid and casual golfers will want to travel to play, Jones added. The golf course has open entrances, pockets and sandy areas to capture the ball and keep it from going into the desert. Jones has kept the green contours mild so that the putting surfaces are manageable in the wind.

"People will want to play this course over and over again because the conditions change with the wind," Jones said. "Being located in a protected marine park, we adhered to stringent environmental rules, and we gladly accepted the challenge, because we feel that is going to keep the Islands of Loreto unique," said Perry. "Sunrise each day gives the mountains a brownish hue, and when the sun sets at night, they turn a vibrant red. And the views of the bay are without question some of the best I've ever seen. We're literally carving this golf course into this incredible setting while maintaining all of its natural beauty."

Whale Photo-identification Project by Marilia Olio, Marine Biologist and guide at Cabo Trek www.cabotrek.com

Humpback whales are identified as individuals by the underside of their flukes, or tails. The distinct coloration, shape, and scarring pattern of the flukes’ underside are as unique as a human fingerprint, allowing scientists to distinguish individuals using the pictures they have taken of their flukes. This season, a photo identification project has been started in Cabo San Lucas with a catalog of more than 250 individual whales. To improve larger existing fluke identification catalogs from the entire West Coast of North America, pictures are shared with Ted Cheeseman from Happywhale (www.happywhale.com), which is a program that tracks individual whales throughout the world’s oceans and with Katherina Audley from the Whales of Guerrero Research Project (www.whalesinmexico.com), which is a project that is studying humpback whales for the first time in Zihuatanejo, in the state of Guerrero, Mexico. Each whale is given an ID – CTHW (for Cabo Trek Humpback Whale) along with their respective number. Some of those whales are already known and have a nickname in addition to their ID number. In the first 3 weeks of the 2017 season, there have already been 17 matches of humpbacks sighted in Cabo San Lucas which were seen in different areas of USA and Canada. Some of the whales already re-sighted are: CTHW#35 – This was the first match. It was sighted in August 2015 in Moss Landing, California and in December 2015 in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. CTHW#84 – This whale, also known as Galaxy, has been sighted 11 times in Monterey Bay and Moss Landing, California, from 2009 to 2016 and, in February 2016 in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. CTHW#160 – This is a well-known

whale. It was sighted for the first time in July 2004 in Port San Luis, re-sighted in Santa Barbara Channel, Monterey Bay and Gulf of the Farallones. CTHW#160 was the first whale sighted in Cabo San Lucas this season. CTHW#243 – This whale is also known as Simba. It was seen for the first time in Monterey Bay in 2003, re- sighted 5 more times in Ventura and Moss Landing, California.

The intention behind this project is to raise awareness regarding best whale watching practices and to contribute to understanding the dynamics of the Northeastern Pacific humpback whale population in order to improve the conservation plan for humpback whales and the ocean. * 16

ALL THAT'S FISHY From Land's End to La Paz

he New Year has brought chilly evening temperatures, often below 60 degrees in Cabo San Lucas. However, there has been stunning action for blue and striped marlin as well as giant yellowfin tuna which has heated up to the boiling point for anglers, both visiting and local. Out on the Pacific side, to the north from Cabo Falso, and 40 miles up to Finger Bank, quantity and quality have been the unexpected bonuses already this early in the year. Double-digit releases of stripers are not uncommon plus enough of the larger blue marlin ranging from a few hundred pounds to over 900 pounds have been hooked, released or lost after epic battles some of which have lasted for hours. In the yellowfin tuna column, the Cabo fleet has accounted for well over two dozen fish over 150 pounds up to one monster caught on the Sportfisher “Santana” weighing in at 354 pounds which prompted some locals to declare the past few weeks as a few of the best ever for huge tuna. Not to be outdone the inshore, light-tackle and fly anglers have had a field day catching grouper, jack crevalle, sierra Spanish mackerel, sea bass, skipjack, roosterfish, amberjack and ladyfish so close to shore that the hotel guests could watch them from the pools dotting Pacific beaches. Moving up into the Sea of Cortez toward San Jose, the North Winds, combined with off-colored water, had fewer folks fishing. This resulted in reports of a few dorado mixed in with better catches of smaller yellowfin tuna, mostly in the 15- to 30-pound class, along with a few 50-pounders and an occasional wahoo. At La Ribera, locals are reveling in the “balmy” weather in spite of the North Wind churning up the sea. Regardless, on those days when the wind actually backs off long enough for some of the boats to sneak out a few miles offshore in front of the

marina, they are being rewarded with spectacular and unusual (for January) catches of yellowfin tuna to 50 pounds along with a hot striped marlin bite. Up in the La Paz area it has been the same tune, except with even more North Winds preventing much fishing recently. When it has been fishable, it has been mostly inshore for sea bass, snapper, barred pargo and jack crevalle. All of which is fun action, especially on lighter tackle, but a few of the larger pargo broke off in the rocks even on the heavier gear. Offshore, a few wahoo and small tuna bit, however, more were lost than were caught. There have been extraordinary catches at Cabo and East Cape... very cool weather in Cabo San Lucas, unseasonably warm weather at East Cape, and La Paz? The much expected North Winds had fewer boats fishing these past weeks. Maybe we can just chalk this month up to “magic happens.” Tight lines to you all! *

As a mid-handicapper myself, as a player continues to get better and better through the good and bad of the game, the game also has its way of rewarding the player with its landscapes, experiences, and comradery. BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are several charter companies that can accommodate your needs. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour of the landmark arch, a few hours of fishing, and a cruise to one of our beautiful bays for a swim. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the biggest difference between a yacht and a fishing boat rental is the cost. Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers, pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option. Cruisers accommodate larger groups and are more comfortable when the sea is rough on a windy day. THE MARINAS Marina Cabo San Lucas The area’s largest commercial marina features 380 slips and accommodates vessels of up to 375 feet. Amenities include 24-hour security, electricity and potable water, a fuel dock, and convenient laundry and shower facilities. FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate, no matter what your level of fishing experience is. What to Expect Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or these amenities can be added at an additional cost. It is better to leave early; trips usually begin at 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. It is customary to leave the crew a gratuity of 15% to 20%. Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait, you may buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire may also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

The canyon runs from the depths of the Cabo San Lucas bay to within 30 feet of the beach. Pelican Rock Beginners - 25’-80’ This large rock attracts many tropical fish and is only five minutes from shore. Neptune’s Finger Advanced - 80’-100’ A spectacular canyon wall dive. Cabeza de Ballena Beginners - 20’-40’ A 25-minute boat ride leads to a dive through large boulders with many fish. Santa María Cave Beginners - 20’-40’ Reachable from the shore or a 35-minute boat ride, the entrance to Santa Maria canyon has a huge variety of fish which feed right from your hand. Chileno Beginners - 30’-70’ This location offers parking, sea turtle sightings, tropical fish, and night dives over a sandy and rocky bottom following a 35-minute boat ride. El Gavilán Intermediate/Advanced - 70’-100’ This rocky ledge leads into a canyon where groupers and larger fish are often sighted; 35 minutes by boat. Blow Hole Beginners/Advanced - 30’-70’ 35-minutes from San Lucas, or just 10

minutes from Chileno beach, this dive offers rocky valleys presenting a variety of fish. Las Salinas Beginners - 30’-45’ - A sunken Japanese fishing boat attracts a large assortment of fish at this beginners’ dive; about 80 minutes from Cabo San Lucas or one hour from La Playita. Gordo Banks Advanced - 110’-120’ - A seamount provides views of marlin, hammerheads, skip jacks and at times huge manta rays; one hour from La Playita. Cabo Pulmo Beginner-Advanced - 30’-100’ A one hour drive east of San José or five minutes by boat and you’ll find the only living coral reef in the Sea of Cortez. SNORKELLING SPOTS Cabo offers several methods for snorkelling. You may drive to a local beach and swim out, book a tour with one of the many popular companies, or charter a private boat. Tours are typically two or three hours. Stay away from the Pacific side of the peninsula; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports. Pelican Rock

A quick five-minute ride from the Cabo San Lucas marina or Medano Beach is all it takes to get to this fish-attracting rock.

Lover’s Beach This popular and uniquely-named beach is accessible only by boat. Be on the look-out, however, as the water is not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Bay Snorkel tours regularly visit Santa Maria Bay. If you choose to drive there, it’s an easy swim from the shore to the reef on the right side of the cove. Chileno Bay Snorkelers will find a safe, roped-off area for swimming at this common tour destination. Cabo Pulmo A Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkelling in the area. This eightfingered coral reef is about a 2-hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it!

GOLFING

With the desert meeting the Sea of Cortez as a backdrop, there is no doubt why Los Cabos has become a championship golf destination over the years. From Tiger Woods to Nicklaus and Fazio, many of the big names in golf have designed courses on this unique landscape. CABO REAL The newly renovated Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed golf course is one of the Corridor’s first championship courses and boasts beautiful views of the Sea of Cortez, elevation changes, and has hosted two PGA Senior Slams. 18 holes, Par 73, 7,461 yards. SURFING

Baja Sur has been a popular surfing destination since the ‘50s. The East Cape is popular for kite surfing and the Pacific coast has several surf breaks where you will find less crowds. See our Baja Sur map and look for this symbol to locate the surf spots mentioned bellow. SAN PEDRITO Level: Advanced. Direction: Right, left. Location: Pacific side right before arriving to Todos Santos. Have you ever had a dream about flying like Superman or maybe swimming like a dolphin? Dreams can come true in Cabo! The FlyBoard is a device connected and powered by a personal watercraft, which allows propulsion underwater and in the air. Users are connected to the board by wakeboard boots, under which, water pressure provides thrust. A certified trainer controls the power and height and you control all the movement. Available at Medano beach or in the Puerto Los Cabos Marina in San José del Cabo.

STAND UP PADDLING

There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just a paddle and a board. Stand up paddling is a great way to see marine life and to get a great workout and while enjoying nature. At Medano beach you can rent boards in several locations. Certain companies offer paddling lessons and some have yoga classes on the board.

KITE SURFING

This sport is most popular in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (the north-east side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kite-boarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than in La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December. Every January, the Lord of the Wind tournament takes place in Los Barriles. 22

December through February East Cape and Costa Azul are on the flatter side. The Pacific can be good this time of year because it’s exposed to the west swell. March through May This is the windy season. Swells are consistent and you’ll run into fewer crowds.

Adventure Parks There are several adventure parks in Los Cabos where you and your kids can experience zip-lining, backcountry ATV tours, a camel safari, and more. Zip-lines are appropriate for kids of 8 years and up and be prepared to hike from 5 to 15 minutes from line to line. Most companies include transportation. Parasailing If heights over land are not right for you, try a parasailing trip and gain some altitude to enjoy beautiful views of Cabo while tethered firmly to a speedboat!

Buggy, Atv, Or Bike Rentals There are several local companies which offer ATVs, buggies, and other off-road vehicles for trail and beach cruising. Strap on some goggles and hop behind the wheel of one of these off-road racers for an afternoon of fast-paced fun! Vehicles include typical ATVs or enclosed rail buggies or RZR ATVs. Tours are typically three hours, and drivers must be 16 years of age with a valid drivers’ license. If pedal-powered rides are more your speed, look into renting a mountain bike, beach cruiser, or joining a guided bicycle tour of town. Just make sure to wear a helmet! Horseback Rides, Nature Walks, and Bird Watching Los Cabos (particularly San José del Cabo) offers a number of horseback excursions for all ages. Saddle up for a sunset guided beach ride, venture up a hidden canyon trail, or just sit back in the shade while experienced horse trainers give the kids lessons in horsemanship – there’s something for everyone! San José also boasts a natural estuary and nature preserve. Enjoy a peaceful, self-guided nature walk to observe some of the lushest landscape in the area. Species of flora and fauna are abundant: dozens of species of cactus, lizards, and birds can be spotted on this solitary walk, just a few minutes from downtown. Cactus-lovers may also want to check out the nearby cactus gardens Wirikuta, offering a large variety of cacti laid out in an artful outdoor setting.

Wet Fun Water Park Located about 20 minutes from San José, this water park has shallow pools and small slides for young children, water mushrooms, a pirate ship and a giant bucket that dumps water on the bystanders bellow. For the adrenaline seekers, several fast and large slides stand tall and mighty and offer a great view of the beautiful surrounding mountains. To get there take HWY 1 north from the San José International Airport towards La Paz and East Cape. After about 15 miles, the exit for Caudaño and the water park will be at km 66. Follow this road for a few minutes and you will find the park on your right. Turtle Release Every year, several species of endangered sea turtles nest in the warm sands of Los Cabos. Your family will have the opportunity to help these fragile and tiny creatures make it safely into the sea. Children will learn about the importance of conservation and they will surely enjoy the experience of helping these little friends. Sol de Mayo Waterfall Cascade Located about an hour and a half away from Los Cabos, the Sol de Mayo Oasis is yet another natural beauty of the Southern Baja California region. The hike leads the adventurous to a majestically beautiful oasis where everyone can swim and even dive into the cool, serene waters. Be sure to pack a lunch, and take plenty of water. There are plenty of signs to guide everyone to this wonderful piece of paradise. After arriving in Santiago, turn right up the little hill towards the town square. Imagine floating in a turquoise bay with pink sand, snorkelling with a whale shark or riding some epic waves, each beach offers something unique. Here is a list of the mustsee beaches to help you decide which one is for you or just visit them all!

MEDANO BEACH

If you’re looking for the action, this is where it is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2-mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars, right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and family-friendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. Numerous activities and water sports are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the best spot to do it. Its stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see. Location: In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. The beach is accessible by foot through the east side of the marina or via Avenida del Pescador. Tips: Be prepared to be approached by souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “No, gracias.” Prices don’t vary much from one water sports rental place to another. Visit Lover’s Beach while you’re there.

LOVER’S BEACH

Getting there is an adventure in itself, due to the fact that it is reachable only by boat, kayak or stand up paddle board. The easiest way is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Your captain will cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Once you arrive, you’ll notice the striking rock formations and caves. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean; the locals call this Divorce Beach. This side is very dangerous for swimming because of the powerful undertow, so swim on Lover’s Beach only. Location: Land’s End beside the famous arch. This beach is accessible only by boat. Tips: There are a couple of vendors who offer beer and water, but you won’t find any other services. An hour or two should be enough time to explore this natural wonderland.

Santa Maria is a stunning horseshoe cove with coarse coral-colored sand and abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkelling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family-friendly beach is relatively secluded; therefore, you rarely run into beach vendors. However, the beach does have brand new bathrooms and palapas. Location: Travelling west from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the sign which reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. Tips: Swim from the shore towards the rocks on the right side of the beach for a great snorkeling experience.

CHILENO

Chileno is a very popular location for snorkelling, swimming or just spending the day under the newly-installed palapas. You’ll find tide pools at the east end of the beach and beautiful reefs offering excellent snorkelling and scuba diving. Public restrooms are available and there are plenty of palapas for shade. Location: Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near Km. 14 of the main highway. Tips: If you visit Chileno on a weekend, make an effort to arrive early; snorkelling visibility is often better in the mornings, you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours and, if you beat the crowds, you’ll be guaranteed a palapa to yourself for some much-needed shade. Bring snorkelling gear!

PALMILLA

Palmilla beach is known for its family-friendly calm waters and a mile-long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes, the One&Only Hotel and the world renowned Jack Nicklaus Ocean Nine golf course. Pangas and

fishing cruisers are available for charter, but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis. Location: Take the Palmilla ramp exit at Km. 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel. Tips: Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa, or bring your own umbrella. No services are available here.

COSTA AZUL

If what you’re looking for is a good surf spot you can find it here without driving out of town. Head over to Zipper’s for a surf session and lunch and beers at the restaurant. To the west of Zippers is Acapulquito beach where the Cabo Surf Hotel and Mike Doyle Surf School are located. You can find surf shops in the area where you can rent surf and stand-up paddle boards and set up lessons. The surf is bigger during the summer, and in the winter this is a good spot for snorkelling and swimming. Location: Exit into the arroyo at Km. 28 via the Costa Azul Bridge. Tips: Swimming with caution is possible in this area but keep an eye out for surfers.

CERRITOS

Cerritos beach is a popular surf spot and swimming here is relatively safe. The scenic 45-minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant is a perfect spot to spend a relaxing day, maybe even get a massage on the beach. If you want to be active, you can take a surf lesson at Baja Surf Camp or rent surf and boogie boards at the Costa Azul Surf Shop. Location: Exit at Km. 66 of the Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos Highway. Watch the markers and look for the signs. Drive about 1.7 miles to the beach area. Tips: Lounge chairs, restrooms, food and drinks are available at The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant. The ocean currents are strong and the waves can be quite powerful on a big day, so swim with caution.

LOS ARBOLITOS - Cabo Pulmo

Cabo Pulmo is a Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkelling in the area. This eight-fingered coral reef is about a 1.5 hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it. Location: Take Highway 1 towards Los Barriles. Exit towards La Ribera and conitnue south towards Cabo Pulmo. Pass the small town of Cabo Pulmo and in about 3 km you will find a gate on your right to access Los Arbolitos, this is where you pay the access fee. Tips: There is a small $30.00 pesos fee to access this beach which will allow you t use a fresh water shower and bathrooms. Palapas are available, as well as kayaking equipment rentals. Bring cash!

BALANDRA

A stunning bay that will take your breath away. You can walk back and forth in the bay in waist high water that is crystal clear with shades of blue turquoise. Follow the shore towards the north-east side and you will find the famous “mushroom rock” as well as other interesting rock formations. Pictures just don’t do it justice. You won’t regret visiting Playa Balandra! Location: About 30 minutes from the boardwalk in La Paz. Simply follow the main drag along the boardwalk, then through Costa Baja Golf Course and continue to wind around the coast and through the mountains until you see the signs for the beach. Tips: No bathroom facilities. There is a truck where you can buy water and snacks, but it is recommended to bring your own in case they are closed. There are palapas, but not a lot. You can rent kayaks and snorkel gear.

To really excel at the art of shopping, one must perfect the art of browsing. With the many colorful and inventive crafts produced in Mexico, shopping here is a visual feast. At first glance, Cabo San Lucas seems a hodgepodge of souvenir stands and street vendors. Look a little further and you'll discover quality shops. In San José del Cabo, 20 miles northeast, explore the historic downtown where you'll find enough shopping opportunities to pass a lazy morning or afternoon. Some shops do close for siesta, which makes for time to enjoy a leisurely lunch at the many fine restaurants close to the main square and around the Art District behind the church. In addition to fine arts and crafts, look for Talavera pottery, named after a Spanish city with similar traditions. Mexican Talavera originated in Puebla, a colonial city in the state of the same name, an hour away to the southeast of Mexico City. Talavera designs show influences of Spanish, Arabic, Asian, and Mexican indigenous cultures. Nearby, Cholula has a Pre-Hispanic tradition of fine pottery. Talavera is produced in both decorative and functional forms, from tiles to candlesticks, plates, boxes and vases. Fired twice, the painted designs and glaze are applied between the two firings. Often imitated, you'll know real Talavera from its intricate detail and quality workmanship. The Talavera style is also produced in the State of Guanajuato, notably in Dolores Hidalgo, with a strong Moorish influence in design and color. The large, colorful decorated ceramic platters you see on the beach and streets may look attractive and festive, still they're often inferior in quality to those sold in specialty shops and may break easily due to poor firing. 26

Talavera is by no means the only type of pottery found in the stores of Los Cabos. Most of the ceramics you'll see come from the Guadalajara suburbs of Tonala and Tlaquepaque. Dinnerware, vases, decorative pieces, suns, moons and animal shapes are produced in abundance, as well as the many shapes and sizes of pots. Apart from Talavera, look for the tree of life — a delightful candelabra — standing from one to three feet high with intricately decorated tiers featuring animals, figures and flowers. Much rarer here is the distinctive black pottery from San Bartolo Coyotepec in Oaxaca. Often ornately carved, this light and dainty pottery is fired in the ground, causing the iron oxide in the clay to turn black, after which it's polished to a high luster. Up in the lower ranges of the Sierra de La Laguna near Todos Santos, and in the village of Candelaria north of Cabo San Lucas, several families produce functional pottery from local clay found in dry river beds after the summer rains. It's fired in the ground and often bears the marks of this ancient art. Surprisingly durable, the plates, bowls and pitchers have a coppery, brick-colored hue and appealing rustic designs. They're not massed produced and you won't see them in many places in Los Cabos but for pottery lovers, they're highly coveted. These hand-shaped vessels are one of the few indigenous crafts of the Southern Baja Peninsula and are a welcome addition to any table. If you're looking for a truly Mexican memory of your visit to Los Cabos, the ancient art of pottery found in a vase, a plate, a jardinière or a set of candlesticks will forever remind you of Mexico, time after time. *

SUPER BOWL 51 Nearly every bar in Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo will be offering Super

Bowl parties for vacationing guests and locals to enjoy. In the Cabo San Lucas downtown strip, the game will be available on a dizzying array of large plasma flat screen TV sets found at Desperados, Cabo Blue, Cabo Cantina, Hooliganz Corner Bar, Tanga Tanga, Jungle Bar, Rockstone, El Squid Roe, and Cabo Wabo. Along the Marina and at the beach, the Super Bowl can be seen at Solomon's Landing, Captain Tony's, Ecocat Bar, Tiki Bar, Baja Cantina, Mango Cantina, Baja Brewing, and Mango Deck. Every hotel in either city and those along the 24 mile corridor will offer the game at any one of the many bars on their beautiful resort grounds. CONSTITUTION DAY

February 5, 2016 marks the national federal holiday and celebration of the country's constitution, which was first drafted into law in 1917. On Monday, February 6th, banks, schools and government offices are closed in observance of this holiday. In Cabo San Lucas, families celebrate with picnics at Medano Beach, Santa Maria and Chileno beaches and small barbecue gatherings throughout the city. A small parade will also take place in San Jose del Cabo.

Studio will be held on the weekend of February 11 & 12, from 10 am to 4 pm, with proceeds to benefit the childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s art program at the Palapa Society of Todos Santos. Advance ticket sales can be purchased at $10 USD each at the Tecolote Book Store located on Calle Juarez. The Todos Santos Open Studio Tour draws hundreds of people who are curious to see working art studios, meet the artists and perhaps have a personal dialogue with them. Participating artists include painters, sculptors, photographers, muralists, plein air painters, encaustic artists, jewelers, printmakers, collage artists, potters and wood turners. There are 41 artists that are part of the Open Studio tour which includes painters; Penny Brozda, Azia Coffman, Michael Cope, Marshall Dahlquist, and Ezra Katz among others. LOS CABOS HALF MARATHON/5K The Los Cabos Half Marathon

takes place in downtown San Jose del Cabo's historical central plaza, where the spectacular fitness event and long distance competition will start at 7:00 a.m. From downtown's Historical Plaza Mijares, the mostly flat 13.1 mile race, will take runners over the bridge to the Puerto Los Cabos Marina and return along the same route; taking participants by the San Jose del Cabo Estuary to the finish. There are two challenging slopes in the race. Online registration is available until February 11th at the Palacio Municipal until 8:00 p.m. The half marathon cost is $60 US dollars, while fees for the 6.2 mile 10K and 3.1 mile 5K are just $25 USD. Plaza Mijares, will be the start and finish for every one of the three distance races. Last year's 2016 half marathon winners consisted of men's champion Elisha Korrir in one hour, ten minutes and 23 seconds (1:10:23) while the women's gold medal winner Genoveva Jelagat Kigen clocked 1:20:21; ten minutes behind!. For the men, Luis Alejandro Garcia Rangel was 2nd (1:11:46) and Louis Moreau 3rd (1:16:50). In the women's half, Alexa Roudayna de La Huerta Susilla was 2nd (1:24:21) with Lindsay Beaver 3rd in 1:32:49. The top three finishers of the Men's and Women's 5K were Abraham Noguez Eguizabal (16:39), Luis Fernando Garcia Gaona (17:09) and Jesus Murillo Marquez (17:37) for the guys and Daniella Gomez Lamadrid (19:55), Brenda Adeline Villazana Hilario (21:03) and Zayeptzy Garcia (21:29) for the ladies. The 5th Annual free admission San Jose Jazz Festival Weekend will once again be held at Plaza del Pescador, along the Hotel Zone where the popular growing event attracts vacationing guests and tourists as well as jazz loving aficionados from local nearby cities of Cabo San Lucas, Todos Santos, and La Paz. TODOS SANTOS ART FESTIVAL

The seven day long, 20th Annual Art Festival in Todos Santos, takes place this year from February 21 - 28. The magical city of Todos Santos, will host artists of every skill, musicians of various styles and even filmmakers, displaying their new projects at this fascinating spectacle that first began in 1997. Organized by Jose Barajas, The TS Art Festival will feature live music, dance and theater performances as well as the highly touted local artists showcasing traditional Mexican culture, as well as piano and poetry recitals. The festival offers painting and drawing exhibitions. Artisans from different areas of Baja California and Mexico set up next to the yellow-colored Catholic church, where they sell arts and crafts from this region and the mainland. The week-long celebration of Mexican culture that features live music, dance and theatre performances, painting and drawing exhibitions, lectures on local environmental and social issues, piano and poetry recitals is an event not to miss. Artisans from different parts of Mexico also set up shop next to the church to sell their crafts.

23-28 CARNAVAL LA PAZ

The Baja California State Capitol City of La Paz, will once again host their 17th annual Brazilian-style Carnaval from Thursday, February 23 until Fat Tuesday, February 28, 2016. This year's theme will be â&#x20AC;&#x153;El Juego de la Vida" or "The Game of Life". Since its inception, Carnaval has become the grandest event on the La Paz social calendar, drawing hundreds of thousands of people each year. Following Christian Easter Calendar tradition, Carnaval historically ends on Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday. Carnaval La Paz is a family event, with modest parades, food booths and cultural events. Attended by a cross section of Baja California Sur, it is most popular with young people in their early twenties. The Baja Carnaval Queen visits the jail, orphanage and old folks home to bring the spirit of Carnaval to those that can't attend. The parade nights always bring out the best crowds (Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, the last three nights) and the float costumes are about as racy as things get in this family town. The main stage is located near the kiosk (bandstand) on the Malecon at the foot of 16th of September Street.

THE LOS BARRILES DOG SHOW The Los Barriles Dog Show, an

event devised by Emma Nicholson The Baja Kenel Club - and Tracey Lewis is expected to attract twice as many spectators and participants in heir second edition, building on the huge success of the 2015 show that saw over 150 dogs competing, and over $5,000 raised for spaying and neutering activities across the East Cape. Emma Nicholson, Baja Kennel Club, comments: “The success of the first show was beyond our expectations...The feedback from communities, from Cabo to La Paz, confirms that we can expect many more people in 2017. We hope the show will become one of the largest charity tourist events in Baja by uniting people through their love for their dogs.” The proceeds from the show will go to local East Cape charities ALMA, Amigos De Animales and SNAP to support essential spay and neuter clinics.
