Los Cabos (the capes) is located in the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of four main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo, Todos Santos and the East Cape. La Paz is the Capital of the state, however, technically it is not part of the municipality of Los Cabos. If you take a look at the Baja Sur map you can see that the highways and towns form a loop. The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet at the very tip of the peninsula. It's very clear when you're on the Pacific side; the waves are much larger and powerful and the winds are stronger. If you go further north along the Pacific side the climate and beaches are very different than on the Sea of Cortez. It's usually a few degrees cooler, which is very pleasant during the warm summer months. In the Pescadero and Todos Santos area, the sand is dark and fine and the color of the water is deep blue. The sand in Sea of Cortez beaches is coarser and the water is a lighter tone of blue. The beaches in La Paz and the surrounding areas are possibly the most beautiful ones in Baja Sur. The white powdery sand and the waist-high water create a spectacular shade of turquoise, the kind you see in postcards. The mountains meet the desert, the desert meets the ocean. The Sierra de la Laguna is a mountain range that lies at the southern end of the peninsula. Above 800 meters in elevation dry forests transition to pine-oak forests. The main climate of the region is arid to semi-arid, however, there are very fertile areas where local farmers grow a variety of fruits and vegetables, especially on the Pacific side. The aquarium of the world. These are the words that Jacques Cousteau used to describe the Sea of Cortez. It is said that eons ago, back when the Earth and Continents were still taking their shape, the edge of Mexico split from the mainland to form the Gulf of California and the Baja Peninsula. This allowed the Pacific Ocean to rush into the gap and create the Sea of Cortez, or as some call it, Mother Nature’s own fish trap. Hundreds of varieties of fish and mammals found their way into this “trap” and either stayed in its warm shallow waters or ventured down into the cool bottom of the two mile-deep San Andreas Fault. For millenniums, the Colorado River has been dragging its rich minerals and nutrients into the Sea of Cortez, aiding the living species to thrive in these waters. In the months of January through March, Gray whales make their yearly migration from Alaska to give birth to their young in the shallow and warm waters of the Sea of Cortez. 8

Cabo San Lucas

This tourist friendly town, also just known as “Cabo,” is located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula and is full of entertainment for every age and liking. The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet at Land’s End, where you can observe the beautiful rock formations and the famous Cabo arch. In Cabo San Lucas you can find Medano Beach, the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area, an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night.

San José del Cabo

Walking around downtown San José will allow you to experience a traditional Mexican town. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district as well as world-class restaurants. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride to explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species.

The Corridor

The corridor is the 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 20 minute drive). Along this road you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, championship golf courses and beautiful views. Have your camera ready and make a roadside stop at the Costa Azul view-point for photo opportunities and a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut).

Todos Santos

Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the peninsula, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José due to the breezes coming from the Pacific.

East Cape

People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, an eight fingered coral reef that offers outstanding snorkelling and scuba diving and turtle nesting on the beach. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and folks who just want to get away from it all.

La Paz

La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waist high water at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer.

Loreto

Loreto offers the best of both worlds for tourists who long to escape to an 'authentic-Mexico' with settings that take you back-in-time along with ocean activities that rival that of any other modern coastal city. In Loreto you'll find historic buildings such as the enchanting Mision de Loreto - a mission-style church that was built in 1697 as well as The Islands of Loreto which boasts Mexico's largest marine preserve where dolphins, seals, turtles and sea lions all play in the sea. For those who are partial to adventures on land; there is hiking, biking, and nature-tours that fill up a camera with pictures of radiant natural settings. Loreto is the perfect place for everyone from honeymooners to large families.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE Dollars are accepted almost everywhere and you will get your change in pesos. The exchange rate varies every day, but some places have a set rate.

ATMs - The easiest way to get pesos is to simply withdraw money from an ATM in Los Cabos. Bank ATMs give the daily exchange rate (best possible rate). Examples include Banorte, Bancomer, Santander, Banamex, and HSBC. Non-bank ATMs located in the street will charge higher fees. Some ATMs only give you dollars, some only pesos and some give you the option to withdraw both. Pay close attention to what currency you’re withdrawing and try to get as much cash as possible in one transaction to avoid paying high fees.

CASH OR CARD? Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are generally accepted, but you often run into cash only places. Always ask beforehand and carry cash. Your bank will most likely charge you international transaction fees if you pay with your card.

GROCERIES - In Cabo San Lucas, Wal-Mart and Costco are good options and easy to get to. You can always find a taxi outside of these stores. San José has a Wal-Mart and Mega. If you just need to grab something quickly, OXXO stores are small, reasonably priced convenient stores located all over town.

HOW DO I DIAL? The local area code is 624 To dial to other countries: 00 + country code (1, 2 or 3 digits) + number From a Mexican land line or cell phone: To a Mexican long distance number: 01 + 3 digit area code + 7 digit number To a Mexican cell phone number: 3 digit area code + 7 digit number To a U.S. phone number: 00 + 1 + 3 digit area code + 7 digit number From your U.S. cell phone: To a Mexican land line or cell phone: 011 52 + 3 digit area code + number To a U.S. phone number: 00 + 1 + 3 digit area code + number Some U.S. cell phone carriers have arrangements with Mexican carriers and when you travel here your cell phone uses their towers. If this is your case, you will have to dial as if you had a Mexican phone. U.S. TOLL FREE NUMBERS (International rates will apply): To a 1 (800): 00 + 1 + 880 + phone number To a 1 (888): 00 + 1 + 881 + phone number To a 1 (877): 00 + 1 + 882 + phone number To a 1 (866): 00 + 1 + 883 + phone number DRIVING Renting a car will allow you to enjoy the freedom of exploring Los Cabos. Driving in Mexico might be intimidating, but if you just go with the muddled flow, you will realize that there is some organization within the chaos. If you are pulled over by local police for committing a driving infraction, the standard procedure is for them to take your Driver’s License. You will then have to go to the Police Station to pay your ticket and pick-up your license. There are two types of gasoline: Magna, which is regular, and Premium. Lleno (pronounced ye-no) means full. Major credit cards are accepted. Tipping the gas station attendant around $10.00 pesos is customary. There is a toll road that takes you from the airport to Cabo San Lucas or to the Todos Santos highway. By taking this road you avoid the taxi and shuttle traffic on the main highway. The cost varies from $63.00 to $75.00 pesos, depending on your destination. ALTO STOP

DESTINATION WEDDINGS have been mainstay in Cabo for decades, and destination wedding planners like myself are busier than ever. It’s not hard to see why Cabo remains one of the most desirable wedding destinations anywhere. There are countless reasons for the growing traffic to Los Cabos, some of which include the consistently beautiful weather, safety, ease of access, variety, the many local world-class wedding vendors, breathtaking views – I could go on all day. It’s hard not to imagine getting married when standing in the warm golden sand looking out over the blue and green waters of the Sea of Cortez, and gazing at the iconic Arch of Cabo surrounded by the red and purple skies of a Baja Sunset. Throw in hundreds of first-class accommodations, varieties of gorgeous venues, world-renowned golf and deep-sea fishing, countless spas, and more activities that you can imagine and you’ve got yourself a wedding destination that’s hard to beat.

www.DestinoLosCabos.com

Every wedding season brings new trends, some which stick around for years and others that pass quickly in the night (fare thee well, 80s themed weddings!). This season has brought new and old trends alike. It’s hard to choose a favorite, but the following are four destination wedding trends that we hope to see stick around for a while:

FARM WEDDINGS Not a brand-new trend but certainly a growing one in Cabo is Farm Weddings. While Cabo is a known for pristine beaches and desert landscapes, what many people don’t know is that it’s also host to many organic farms. The Farm wedding is one way to achieve the wow-factor by transporting guests away from the beach resort to an entirely new and unexpected location. Farm weddings are surprisingly versatile, and work well with simple rustic and whimsical designs, as well as elegant luxurious, and even modern event designs. In Cabo, there are 3 key options for your homespun farm wedding, all of which are located in the estuary of San Jose del Cabo, and all of which are draw-dropping in their own unique way. More important, all of which are sure to blow your mind with a culinary experience you won’t soon forget.

Location: Los Tamarindos - Photo by Ana Gomes - Event design by Bonnie Chase Bliss Events Mexico

The first is Huerto Los Tamarindos, a 17-acre property that produces an abundance of organic vegetables, primarily tomatoes, with beautiful rustic event space for up to 400 guests. The kitchen at Los Tamarindos is housed in an original farm house that was built in 1888, and adds to the charm and old-world experience. The farm get its name from the Tamarind trees that grow wild in the fertile soil. Everything grows so beautifully here, that one of the event spaces is completely covered with lush greenery, forming a private canopy of green farm goodness. This property is 100% organic, and the food is 100% fantastic. The second, and newest farm venue to crop up in Cabo is Acre. This trendy new 25-acre farm restaurant embraces a strong “Baja” energy. This property was designed and developed sustainably with the environment in mind. The property currently offers a farm-totable restaurant and bar, roof-top and mango grove event spaces, and a beautiful new pool deck that screams Sunday afternoon pool party. In the works in their palm tree forest, you can find the beginning stages of what will eventually be 25 tree houses. Yes, you read me right; tree houses! Think Swiss Family Robinson meets comfortable boutique hotel. The final, and most famed of the farm wedding venues is Flora Farms. This gorgeous piece of paradise is a ten-acre organic farm that produces over 100 varieties of vegetables and herbs. The property does their own ranching to provide guests with high quality, humanely raised chicken, eggs, pork and beef. They bake fresh daily home-made sourdough, baguettes, ciabatta, focaccia, and herb breads. The pizzas are produced with home-made dough and fresh-made mozzarella, and are cooked in the wood-fire oven. I could continue, but to understand the true quality of the food, you should experience it for yourself; it’s nothing less than extraordinary. And don’t even get me started on the bar, which serves fruit and vegetable infused specialty cocktails like their signature Farmarita. While this explanation of their culinary prowess probably has your mouth watering, the real reason that so many couples love Flora Farms for their wedding are the picture-perfect event spaces, which offer a variety of backdrops and accommodate up to 400 guests. From mango groves and herb gardens to a fairytale farmhouse, Flora Farms is exquisite.

CELEBRITY I DO’S Another growing, though not at all new trend in Cabo is celebrity weddings. More actors, musicians, athletes, reality TV stars, and models make their way down the Baja to get married every year. A fellow Cabo local, and event planning extraordinaire Amy Abbott, owner of Amy Abbott Events, shared with me that her organization has five pro athlete clients this year already. I asked her why she believes we’re seeing so many celebrity couples head to Cabo to tie the knot. She said, “I think it’s because Cabo can support the standards that these couples are looking for.” I couldn’t agree more. After coordinating events in other parts of Mexico, I always come racing back to Cabo. The level of professionalism is extraordinary and the resources are abundant. We rarely experience a situation in which we can’t deliver something that our clients are looking for. More than many other Mexican wedding destinations that I’ve worked in, Cabo can be classy, elegant, formal, and luxurious when it wants to be. The area also boasts many high-end luxury resort options; The One and Only Palmilla, Las Ventanas al Paraiso, Esperanza by Auberge, and The Resort at Pedregal to name a few. Amy went on to make another good point, that as a community, we’re used to a celebrity presence. She’s right; on a regular, if not on-going basis, we see Sammy Hagar, George Clooney and Stacy Keibler, Jennifer Aniston, Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber, Tiger woods, Kenny Chesney, and on and on it goes. It must be much more comfortable for A-listers to enjoy their time in Cabo when locals aren’t swooning all over them (except for Clooney; for him we might swoon). The wedding of NFL player Golden Tate and his new wife Elise Pollard took place just last month in San Jose del Cabo. The weekendlong celebration that gathered 250 people from all over the world, in addition to the wedding, included a boat party, a pool party, an outdoor movie night, and a farewell brunch. The ceremony took place on a beachside garden at their boutique hotel which was privately booked for the wedding group. The reception area was lit with a dreamy canopy of string lights; no detail was spared in the beautiful set-up. Later in the evening, the Tate’s surprised guests with an after-dinner fireworks show, followed by a night of non-stop dancing. Among the many celebrity clients whose names we can’t mention (I suppose we can add “discretion” to the list of perks that draw celebs to Cabo), some of the recent known celebrity weddings include Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo, Naya Rivera and Ryan Dorsey, Michael and Nicole Phelps, Barbie Blank and Sheldon Souray, Barbara Coppel and Alejandro Amaya Hank, and Brooke Brinson and Thayer Wiederhorn.

GOING GREEN No, I don’t mean ‘going green’ as in reducing your carbon footprint, which is another growing wedding trend. I literally mean the color green. The year, one of my favorite new trends has been the greenery wedding, in which we skip the florals, and produce arrangements that are entirely made of lush greenery. With so many different hues and varieties, greenery works beautifully in bouquets, centerpieces, ceremony arches, and even adorning the cake. “Greenery” is actually the 2017 Pantone color of the year. Over-the-top florals are no longer your only option when it comes to designing events. Our Pinterest boards are overflowing with rich, leafy greenery, and the styles range from romantic and rustic, to elegant and modern. For those who don’t want to completely forego the florals, mixing in a few beautiful blooms to a predominantly green design can be equally as dramatic. One of the best features of the greenery wedding is that it’s more affordable than flower-filled events, leaving more room in the budget for other things. *

FUN IN THE SUN EVENTS Mostly in terms of rehearsal dinners and welcome parties, couples are foregoing the traditional dinner-time affair and hosting a daytime event for their guests. Cabo at its core is the sun, the beach, and the water, so why not enjoy the landscape when it’s more desirable? Daytime events offer sunshine and a casual experience that doesn’t compete with your wedding night. In many cases, it’s easier on the pocketbook. Our most recent daytime event was a rehearsal beach party that boasted a DJ, catered street tacos, beer and margaritas, buckets of sunscreen, paddle boards, corn hole tournaments, and traditional Mexican paletas (popsicles; the boozy kind!). Possibly the biggest advantage of a daytime celebration is that after a day of sun and drinking, couples get to bed earlier than they would after a traditional rehearsal dinner, and wake up rested and refreshed for the big day. 16

Having a destination wedding was the best idea we ever had. If we'd have gotten married in the states everyone comes in for a day and you're spending the whole time thanking each person for coming and you cant even enjoy yourselves. We had 4 days of planned events where we got to spend time with each of our guests (who were all on vacation mode not thinking about work), and by the time we got to our wedding everyone knew each other and it was just a huge celebration. We had the best week of our lives and all of our guests are already asking us to renew our vows next year so we can relive these memories. Cabo - we love you. MEDANO BEACH

If you’re looking for the action, this is where it is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2-mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars, right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and family-friendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. Numerous activities and water sports are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the best spot to do it. Its stunning view of Land’s End and the vast entertainment options make this beach a must-see. Location: In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. The beach is accessible by foot through the east side of the marina or via Avenida del Pescador. Tips: Be prepared to be approached by souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, just respond with “No gracias.” Water sports are available such as jet skis, parasailing, flyboarding, stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, and more. Visit Lover’s Beach while you’re there.

LOVER’S BEACH

Getting there is an adventure in itself, due to the fact that it is reachable only by boat, kayak or stand up paddle board. The easiest way is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Your captain will cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Once you arrive, you’ll notice the striking rock formations and caves. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean; the locals call this Divorce Beach. This side is very dangerous for swimming because of the powerful undertow, so swim on Lover’s Beach only. Location: Land’s End beside the famous arch. This beach is accessible only by boat. Tips: There are a couple of vendors who offer beer and water, but you won’t find any other services. An hour or two should be enough time to explore this natural wonderland.

SANTA MARIA

Santa Maria is a stunning horseshoe cove with coarse coral-colored sand and abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkelling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family-friendly beach is relatively secluded; therefore, you rarely run into beach vendors. However, the beach does have brand new bathrooms and palapas. Location: Travelling west from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the sign which reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. Tips: Swim from the shore towards the rocks on the right side of the beach for a great snorkeling experience.

CHILENO

Chileno is a very popular location for snorkelling, swimming or just spending the day under the newly-installed palapas. You’ll find tide pools at the east end of the beach and beautiful reefs offering excellent snorkelling and scuba diving. Public restrooms are available and there are plenty of palapas for shade. Location: Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near Km. 14 of the main highway. Tips: If you visit Chileno on a weekend, make an effort to arrive early; snorkelling visibility is often better in the mornings, you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours and, if you beat the crowds, you’ll be guaranteed a palapa to yourself for some much-needed shade. Bring snorkelling gear!

PALMILLA

Palmilla beach is known for its family-friendly calm waters and a mile-long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes, the One&Only Hotel and the world renowned Jack Nicklaus Ocean Nine golf course. Pangas and

fishing cruisers are available for charter, but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis. Location: Take the Palmilla ramp exit at Km. 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel. Tips: Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa, or bring your own umbrella. No services are available here.

COSTA AZUL

If what you’re looking for is a good surf spot you can find it here without driving out of town. Head over to Zipper’s for a surf session and lunch and beers at the restaurant. To the west of Zippers is Acapulquito beach where the Cabo Surf Hotel and Mike Doyle Surf School are located. You can find surf shops in the area where you can rent surf and stand-up paddle boards and set up lessons. The surf is bigger during the summer, and in the winter this is a good spot for snorkelling and swimming. Location: Exit into the arroyo at Km. 28 via the Costa Azul Bridge. Tips: Swimming with caution is possible in this area but keep an eye out for surfers.

CERRITOS

Cerritos beach is a popular surf spot and swimming here is relatively safe. The scenic 45-minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant is a perfect spot to spend a relaxing day, maybe even get a massage on the beach. If you want to be active, you can take a surf lesson at Baja Surf Camp or rent surf and boogie boards at the Costa Azul Surf Shop. Location: Exit at Km. 66 of the Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos Highway. Watch the markers and look for the signs. Drive about 1.7 miles to the beach area. Tips: Lounge chairs, restrooms, food and drinks are available at The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant. The ocean currents are strong and the waves can be quite powerful on a big day, so swim with caution.

LOS ARBOLITOS - Cabo Pulmo

Cabo Pulmo is a Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkelling in the area. This eight-fingered coral reef is about a 1.5 hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it. Location: Take Highway 1 towards Los Barriles. Exit towards La Ribera and continue south towards Cabo Pulmo. Pass the small town of Cabo Pulmo and in about 4 km you will find a gate on your right to access Los Arbolitos, this is where you pay the access fee. Tips: There is a small $30.00 pesos fee to access this beach which will allow you to use a fresh water shower and bathrooms. Palapas are available, as well as kayaking equipment rentals. Bring cash!

BALANDRA

A stunning bay that will take your breath away. You can walk back and forth in the bay in waist high water that is crystal clear with shades of blue turquoise. Follow the shore towards the north-east side and you will find the famous “mushroom rock” as well as other interesting rock formations. Pictures just don’t do it justice. You won’t regret visiting Playa Balandra! Location: About 30 minutes from the boardwalk in La Paz. Simply follow the main drag along the boardwalk, then through Costa Baja Golf Course and continue to wind around the coast and through the mountains until you see the signs for the beach. Tips: No bathroom facilities. There is a truck where you can buy water and snacks, but it is recommended to bring your own in case they are closed. There are palapas, but not a lot. You can rent kayaks and snorkel gear.

BOATING & FISHING

With calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather, some may argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa María Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, there are endless options to fit your needs.

SEASONAL FISHING CHART

BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are several charter companies that can accommodate your needs. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour of the landmark arch, a few hours of fishing, and a cruise to one of our beautiful bays for a swim. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the biggest difference between a yacht and a fishing boat rental is the cost. Fishing Boat Rentals You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers, pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option. Cruisers accommodate larger groups and are more comfortable when the sea is rough on a windy day. THE MARINAS Marina Cabo San Lucas The area’s largest commercial marina features 380 slips and accommodates vessels of up to 375 feet. Amenities include 24-hour security, electricity and potable water, a fuel dock, and convenient laundry and shower facilities. Puerto Los Cabos Located in La Playita just north of San José del Cabo is the newest marina in the area with 200 available slips 26

www.DestinoLosCabos.com

for boats up to 400 feet. Amenities are similar to Marina Cabo San Lucas, though the boatyard’s 150-ton travel lift can accommodate larger vessels. FISHING There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue - has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate, no matter what your level of fishing experience is. What to Expect Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or these amenities can be added at an additional cost. It is better to leave early; trips usually begin at 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. It is customary to leave the crew a gratuity of 15% to 20%. Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait, you may buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire may also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

SNORKELLING & SCUBA DIVING

Prepare yourself for an incredible show of nature as you swim side by side with colourful schools of fish, eels, rays, octopus, sea turtles and more. The Sea of Cortez or the “Aquarium of the World” offers many opportunities to experience incredible underwater wildlife.

SCUBA DIVING DESTINATIONS Note: travel time is from the Cabo San Lucas marina. Land’s End Intermediate-Advanced - 50’-60’ Five minutes by boat and you can share the water with sea lions and moray eels, with a sunken boat visible in the Falls. Sand Falls Beginners - Advanced - 30’-100’ Steep sand banks drop sharply into a canyon filled with tropical fish. The canyon runs from the depths of the Cabo San Lucas bay to within 30 feet of the beach. Pelican Rock Beginners - 25’-80’ This large rock attracts many tropical fish and is only five minutes from shore. Neptune’s Finger Advanced - 80’-100’ A spectacular canyon wall dive. Cabeza de Ballena Beginners - 20’-40’ A 25-minute boat ride leads to a dive through large boulders with many fish. Santa María Cave Beginners - 20’-40’ Reachable from the shore or a 35-minute boat ride, the entrance to Santa Maria canyon has a huge variety of fish which feed right from your hand. Chileno Beginners - 30’-70’ This location offers parking, sea turtle sightings, tropical fish, and night dives over a sandy and rocky bottom following a 35-minute boat ride. El Gavilán Intermediate/Advanced - 70’-100’ This rocky ledge leads into a canyon where groupers and larger fish are often sighted; 35 minutes by boat.

Blow Hole Beginners/Advanced - 30’-70’ 35-minutes from San Lucas, or just 10 minutes from Chileno beach, this dive offers rocky valleys presenting a variety of fish. Las Salinas Beginners - 30’-45’ - A sunken Japanese fishing boat attracts a large assortment of fish at this beginners’ dive; about 80 minutes from Cabo San Lucas or one hour from La Playita. Gordo Banks Advanced - 110’-120’ - A seamount provides views of marlin, hammerheads, skip jacks and at times huge manta rays; one hour from La Playita. Cabo Pulmo Beginner-Advanced - 30’-100’ A one hour drive east of San José or five minutes by boat and you’ll find the only living coral reef in the Sea of Cortez. SNORKELLING SPOTS Cabo offers several methods for snorkelling. You may drive to a local beach and swim out, book a tour with one of the many popular companies, or charter a private boat. Tours are typically two or three hours. Stay away from the Pacific side of the peninsula; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports. Pelican Rock

A quick five-minute ride from the Cabo San Lucas marina or Medano Beach is all it takes to get to this fish-attracting rock.

Lover’s Beach This popular and uniquely-named beach is accessible only by boat. Be on the look-out, however, as the water is not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Bay Snorkel tours regularly visit Santa Maria Bay. If you choose to drive there, it’s an easy swim from the shore to the reef on the right side of the cove. Chileno Bay Snorkelers will find a safe, roped-off area for swimming at this common tour destination. Cabo Pulmo A Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape, and may offer the best snorkelling in the area. This eight-fingered coral reef is about a 1.5-hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it is well worth it!

ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES Photo courtesy Wild Canyon

Adventure Parks There are several adventure parks in Los Cabos where you and your kids can experience zip-lining, backcountry ATV tours, a camel safari, and more. Zip-lines are appropriate for kids of 8 years and up and be prepared to hike from 5 to 15 minutes from line to line. Most companies include transportation. Parasailing If heights over land are not right for you, try a parasailing trip and gain some altitude to enjoy beautiful views of Cabo while tethered firmly to a speedboat!

Buggy, Atv, Or Bike Rentals There are several local companies which offer ATVs, buggies, and other off-road vehicles for trail and beach cruising. Strap on some goggles and hop behind the wheel of one of these off-road racers for an afternoon of fast-paced fun! Vehicles include typical ATVs or enclosed rail buggies or RZR ATVs. Tours are typically three hours, and drivers must be 16 years of age with a valid drivers’ license. If pedal-powered rides are more your speed, look into renting a mountain bike, beach cruiser, or joining a guided bicycle tour of town. Just make sure to wear a helmet!

For the adrenaline seekers, several fast and large slides stand tall and mighty and offer a great view of the beautiful surrounding mountains. To get there take HWY 1 north from the San José International Airport towards La Paz and East Cape. After about 15 miles, the exit for Caudaño and the water park will be at km 66. Follow this road for a few minutes and you will find the park on your right. Turtle Release Every year, several species of endangered sea turtles nest in the warm sands of Los Cabos. Your family will have the opportunity to help these fragile and tiny creatures make it safely into the sea. Children will learn about the importance of conservation and they will surely enjoy the experience of helping these little friends.

Available at Medano beach or in the Puerto Los Cabos Marina in San José del Cabo.

STAND UP PADDLING

There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just a paddle and a board. Stand up paddling is a great way to see marine life and to get a great workout and while enjoying nature. At Medano beach you can rent boards in several locations. Certain companies offer paddling lessons and some have yoga classes on the board.

KITE SURFING

This sport is most popular in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (the north-east side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kite-boarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than in La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December. Every January, the Lord of the Wind tournament takes place in Los Barriles. 28

LOS CABOS WILDLIFE Survivor of the Ocean: The Friendly Gray Whales

by Katia Silva, Marine Biologist and guide at Cabo Trek www.cabotrek.com

Historically, gray whales lived in the north Pacific and north Atlantic oceans. They live in relatively shallow waters over the continental shelves of western North America and eastern Asia. In 2013 a gray whale was spotted off the coast of Namibia, the first sighting in the Southern Hemisphere. Scientists believe the whales might be repopulating old breeding grounds that have not been used for centuries. The much smaller western sub-population summers in the Okhotsk Sea. Their major known feeding grounds are off the northeastern coast of Sakhalin Island (Russian Federation), but some animals are occasionally seen off the eastern coast of Kamchatka and the northern Okhotsk Sea. Their migration routes and winter breeding grounds are poorly known. The larger eastern North Pacific population, (approximately 26.000 individuals) summers and feeds mainly in the shallow waters of the Chukchi and Beaufort seas, and the northwestern Bering Sea; a few also summer and feed along the Pacific coast from Vancouver Island to central California. The population migrates in autumn along the coast to winter breeding grounds on the west coast of Baja California and the southeastern Gulf of California, in shallow bays and lagoons. Gray whales are friendly, especially those encountered in the whale sanctuary of Magdalena Bay during the months of February and March, often approaching boats, reaching up to 45 feet in length and feeding by sucking in bottom-dwelling animals, mostly amphipods. They are gray with white patches due to barnacles and lice attached to their skin have a small dorsal fin (low hump) and a series of six to twelve knuckles. Sparse hairs are found on their snouts and their blowholes are usually low and heart-shaped. Threats to the eastern North Pacific population include increased human activities in their breeding lagoons in Mexico, climate change, acute noise, toxic spills, aboriginal whaling, entanglement with fishing gear, boat collisions, and possible impacts from fossil fuel exploration. Commercial whaling during the 17th-20th centuries had an extremely detrimental affect on gray whale populations. Numbers were reduced so significantly that the north Atlantic population is now extinct, and the north Pacific population nearly went extinct in the 20th century. Fortunately, with protection in the US and Mexico, the eastern Pacific Ocean population has recovered to about 20% of its pre-whaling numbers and is now stable. The western Pacific Ocean population is still at risk of extinction. The recovery and continuing protection in the eastern Pacific, however, means that the species as a whole is now considered of lesser concern. In the specific case of Magdalena Bay the numbers of gray whales are increasing year after year. So don't hesitate for too long, pack just a couple of things and a good amount of spirit of adventure and go explore the region a bit more in depth. The interaction with these animals in Baja California Sur is something unique to this part of the world and people travel long distances to be able to pet or even kiss a gray whale. *

ALL THAT'S FISHY From Land's End to La Paz Monthly Fishing Report by Gary Graham

I

n a month that has been traditionally short on the exotics and littered with catches of smaller inshore species for the past few years. This March underscores a welcome trend toward normalcy as sea temperatures seem to be in the average range. Suggesting a visit to one of the famous fishing banks surrounding Baja’s tip. To put the importance of the banks in perspective think of underground mountains or pinnacles jutting up from the oceans floor toward the surface where a vast variety of bait congregates attracting many different types of fish to feed. Currently at the Golden Gate Bank 12-miles north somewhat of an oddity is the large schools of sierra that have recently appeared there. An encouraging sign for the ceviche aficionados in your group. On the positive side is the return of the striped marlin that are beginning to show in impressive numbers again on the finger bank on the Pacific side approximately 50 miles north (expect a fuel sur-charge it you ask to go there). An early good sign of things to come and hopefully a trend that continues throughout 2017. Closer to the marina are football sized yellowfin tuna are almost in the shadow of the arches at lands end, as well as grande sized approximately 25-miles further offshore on the San Jaime Bank.

Joining the list of popular surface fish cavorting inshore now are the ever popular roosterfish along with the tough fighting jack crevalle that can be seen chasing bait to the surface. Watching the feeding frenzy and melee that follows is as exciting as hooking one. Another special treat are yellowtail along with an occasional amberjack that have taken up residents closer to shore. Around the various pinnacles the dot the Pacific coastline from Baja’s tip up toward Todos Santos. Another candidate for the boat to table fresh fish experience. However you will have to work at catching them, these critters can reach 35-pounds and are tough customers that wear an angler down in an extended battle. Other residents down deep along the shoreline there are some more delicious fish to target. Grouper, pargo, cabrilla, red snapper and triggerfish. Another bonus now is the whales that visit the area now. Blues, gray and the ever popular humpback that some incredible leaps sometimes completely air borne with reckless abandon. A visual opportunity that will stun everyone aboard. Regardless of your choice of fishing trip excursion expect to be dazzled and have fish tales and perhaps a few photos to share back home. *

Easter Week and the Centennial of Leonora Carrington photos a nd a rti c l e by Sa bri na L ear

SAN JOSE DEL CABO

Thursday Art Walk

April in Los Cabos is best known for Easter Week—Semana Santa—with celebrations beginning on Good Friday, the 14th. Thousands of families arrive from the mainland, while many local families head to their ranches or to camp out on East Cape beaches. It’s the Mexican PG13 version of Spring Break. For those wishing to attend Easter Sunday Catholic Mass services, the Cabo San Lucas Catholic Church is at Cabo San Lucas and Zapata, half a block down behind Plaza Amelia Wilkes. In San José, find the Iglesia de San José at Zaragoza and Hidalgo, across from the main square. Both hold Mass in English at 12 noon. This April also marks the centennial of British-born Mexican Leonora Carrington (April 6, 1917-2011), the renowned Surrealist artist and author. A permanent exhibition of 15 bronze sculptures and 50 screens depicting her life and paintings is on display along the Puerto Los Cabos marina in San José del Cabo. Her works are interspersed with biographical details and family photographs from sons Pablo and Gabriel Weisz Carrington. Longtime friend and promoter, Isaac Masri, curated the exhibition. Eccentric and rebellious from an early age, Carrington balked at the expectations of her wealthy and privileged family. The year before she attended art school in London, her mother gifted her Herbert Read’s 1936 book on Surrealism, its cover featuring a Max Ernst work. Once in London, Leonora eventually met Ernst, 18 years her senior. Falling passionately in love, the pair went to Paris where she would meet André Breton, Picasso and other Surrealists including the Spanish- born painter Remedios Varo, who became a close friend and collaborator until Varo’s death in 1963. By 1940, the German-born Ernst was under arrest in Vichy France and Carrington, devastated, fled to Spain, soon hospitalized following a nervous breakdown. After recovering, she entered into a marriage of convenience with the Mexican poet-writer, Renato Leduc (at the time a diplomat), gaining Mexican nationality. The couple escaped Europe to New York, settling in Mexico in 1943 and divorcing soon after. Carrington would later wed Hungarian photographer, Emeris “Chiki” Weisz, with whom she had her sons. Carrington’s close friendships in Mexico included Frida Kahlo, her longtime patron Edward James, and émigrés Remedios Varo, Kati Horna and Elena Poniatowska, all whom had fled the war to Mexico. One of her best-known works is the 6.5' x 14’ El Mundo Mágico de los Mayas mural, commissioned in 1963 by the Museo Nacional de Antropología in Mexico City, which holds a prominent spot in its Mundo Maya exhibition hall. To research the Mayans, Carrington traveled to Chiapas, working with the Swiss anthropologist Gertrude Blom. In the 1970’s Carrington became a prominent figure in Mexico’s Women’s Liberation Movement and in 2000, Great Britain awarded her the Order of the British Empire (OBE). Posthumously, in 2014, her monumental painting The Giantess sold for close to $1.5 million US at Christie’s. In 2015, she received a “Google Doodle” posthumously commemorating her 98th birthday. Featuring her 1998 painting, How Doth the Little Crocodile, it became the famed Cocodrilo sculpture installed in 2000 on Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City. Upon Carrington’s death in 2011 at age 94, her longtime friend, the Mexican poet Homero Aridjis said, “She was the last great living surrealist, she was a living legend.” The National Arts Council added, “She created mythical worlds in which magical beings and animals occupy the main stage, in which cobras merge with goats and blind crows become trees... These were some of the images that sprang from a mind obsessed with portraying a reality that transcends what can be seen.” Carrington disagreed with Surrealism’s founder, André Breton, who labeled México “surreal,” declaring that it was instead a “mythological” place. After almost 70 years in her adopted country, her protest speaks to Mexico’s magical realism, so embodied in her art. *

There are things that are not sayable. That’s why we have art. - Leonora Carrington 36

The Los Cabos Humane Society presents their 12th Annual Paw N' Claws Golf Tournament & Dinner fundraising event to help continue to provide for the growing Los Cabos pet population. The event was first created a decade ago to assist the tireless work their staff was doing in the Los Cabos pet community because there is no governmental agency to address the problems associated with homeless domestic animals living on the streets. The Los Cabos Humane Society operates as a non-profit organization which exists as the only form of animal protection and control in the Southern Baja California Region for the tourist-popular cities of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. The LCHS Center only has a few paid staff members. The rest of the agency's work (pet adoption, neutering) is accomplished by hard-working volunteers from both communities. The 18-hole open golf tournament will once again take place at Palmilla Golf Course followed by dinner at Acre Restaurant in San Jose del Cabo at La Playita Beach. For tickets, please call Margarita Partridge (624) 156-6502, Barbara (624) 143-2726 or Linda (624) 172-6349 or email tropimargarita@prodigy.net.mx. RANCHO PESCADERO CULINARY WEEKEND The cozy beachfront boutique hotel, Rancho Pescadero Resort, which is located on the Pacific Coast 20 minutes south of Todos Santos is hosting their spring Culinary Weekend event. The hotel has been reported by Los Cabos local expert, Chris Sands, ''Rancho Pescadero is a simple yet elegant resort that has been rated as one of Mexico’s best properties, and is home to 29 suites, a garden restaurant, a spa specializing in local and indigenous ingredients, and a 2,000 square foot yoga pavilion.'' Rancho Pescadero’s most acclaimed attractions, however, may very well be the chefs who appear at the four-day, three-night culinary weekends offered regularly from November through May. Guests at these seasonal gastronomic gatherings are treated to an array of palate pleasing options – from brunches and tastings to cooking classes and artfully paired dinners from visiting and inhouse chefs – and also enjoy easy access to activities like hiking, biking, fishing, surfing, and romantic beachfront horseback rides in one of the world’s most beautiful locales. As an added bonus, the resort is only 45 minutes by car from Cabo San Lucas. The April 8-9 weekend features Alex Seidel, chef and owner at Fruition (opened in 2007) and Mercantile (opened in 2014) in Denver, who was named Best New Chef in Food & Wine Magazine's 2010 issue. “When not cooking at Fruition, Seidel is at his farm tending or milking some 60 sheep and homemade cheese, Seidel raises a heritage pork breed called “Large Black” and has planted his 10-acre farm with fruits and vegetables to supply the restaurant kitchens.” The two-day event costs $250 per person plus tax and includes tasty food and beverage offerings, as well as a Rancho Pescadero apron. On Friday, there will be a cooking demonstration and lunch with Guest Chef Alex Seidel, and a tequila and mezcal tasting with Mixologist Danny Sanchez. On Saturday, guests will receive a Baja wine tasting. For more information and to reserve tickets, please visit ranchopescadero.com/special-offers/guest-chef-series/ or email rancho1@ranchopescadero.com. OUT & ABOUT

THE DON DIABLO TRAIL RUN

The Inaugural Don Diablo Trail Run is a highly demanding 35-kilometer (21.75-mile) trail run, which crosses the Sierra Cacachilas mountain range in La Paz, Baja California Sur. Starting from the outskirts of La Paz (Cajoncito) and finishing in El Sargento on La Ventana Bay, the course traverses many deep canyons and climbs three mountain passes with a total elevation change of 1,409 meters. The race scenery is stunningly beautiful, with large white granite boulders and a hidden oasis with water holes and tall native palm trees. As the race reaches the highest mountain pass of Portesuelo de Caballos, a spectacular view opens to the Sea of Cortez and the Isla Cerralvo (Jacques Cousteau Island). This view accompanies the runners, on and off, for the last 20 kilometers of the race. Contestants will cross the finish line at the Agua Caliente Beach on the Sea of Cortez on the northern side of El Sargento.

WEEK 9-16 HOLY AND EASTER ''SEMANA SANTA''

While Holy week ends the 40-day Lent period, the historic Catholic week includes Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. As many are aware, Holy Week is the annual Christian observance commemorating Jesus' last few days on earth and include the tragic events leading up to his miracle resurrection on Easter Sunday. Holy Week includes the final days of Lent, and the week prior to Easter Sunday. The dates of Holy Week are defined by the date of Easter Sunday, which is a much celebrated feast, which falls on different dates of April from year to year. Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday and ends on Holy Saturday. Holy Week does not include Easter Sunday. Easter Sunday, the first day of Easter Week, immediately follows Holy Week and in Eastern Orthodox Christianity, Holy Week starts on Lazarus Saturday, the day before Palm Sunday. The Holy Week festivities in Los Cabos feature a colorful parade in San Jose del Cabo's downtown Central Plaza and Ameila Wilkes Plaza in Cabo San Lucas, where locals crush eggs filled with paper confetti and also participate in an American-style Easter egg hunt for children.

30 This first edition of the Don Diablo Trail Run will also feature a shorter 21-kilometer race with an elevation gain of 1,109 meters. It will have the same starting point as the 35-kilometer race but it will finish at Los Pisos, a campsite in the middle of the Sierra Cacachilas. Runners will be transported by shuttle from Los Pisos to the main finish line on the Agua Caliente Beach in El Sargento. There is a $40-$45 dollar entry fee and prize money of $15,000 Mexican pesos ($750 US Dollars) for the overall first place men and women, and $5,000 pesos ($250 USD) for age group category winners from 18-39 all the way up to 60-years plus. The Don Diablo Trail Run follows the steps of Don Victor, known locally as Don Diablo, due to his wily escape from the La Paz jail many years ago when he fled into the Cacachilas Mountains. For more information, a view of the course map, and entry fee registration, please visit dondiablotrailrun.com.

There are no classes or school on El Día del Niño celebrated on April 30. In Cabo San Lucas, parents will generally take their kid's to Medano Beach, while San Jose del Cabo holds a small parade and children's activities at the main plaza in front of the historic Catholic Church downtown. Children’s Day has been celebrated annually in Mexico since 1925. Children in Mexico are recognized as an important part of society so the day focuses on the importance of loving, accepting and appreciating the young children of every community, city and state within the Republic of Mexico.
