activities ~ top beaches ~ maps

LOS CABOS & South Baja Los Cabos (the capes) is in the southernmost tip of the State of Baja California Sur and consists of three main areas: Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo and the East Cape. In between you will find smaller towns and points of interest such as Santiago and Miraflores which are located inland at the skirts of the Sierra de la Laguna or Migriño and Pescadero on the Pacific side, in between Cabo San Lucas and Todos Santos.

The Baja Sur Loop If you look at the Baja Sur map you can see that the highways and towns form a loop. There are ongoing road improvements and new highway constructions, so getting from one place to another will only get easier. The new highway from Cabo San Lucas to Todos Santos is impressively well done, making it only a 45 minute drive. Cabo San Lucas Also just known as “Cabo,” is a tourist friendly town located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula that’s full of entertainment for every age and liking. You will find the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meeting at Land’s End and the beautiful rock formations that create the famous Cabo arch. Cabo San Lucas has the liveliest beach in the Los Cabos area, an impressive marina and countless restaurants and bars that keep the town alive day and night. The Corridor A 40 km highway that connects Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo (about a 25 minute drive). Along this road you can find various hotels, luxury ocean front homes, championship golf courses and beautiful views. Have your camera ready to snap some photos of the beautiful beaches and make a roadside stop at the Cabo Real arroyo for a refreshing coco frío (cold coconut). San José del Cabo Walking around San José will be more of a traditional Mexican town experience than Cabo San Lucas. You will find yourself surrounded by colorful buildings and quaint cobblestone streets that lead to the town’s picturesque zócalo (main plaza). Over the years, San José has become an artistic and cultural centre with numerous fine art galleries in its downtown art district. From November through June the popular Art Walk takes place every Thursday evening where the galleries welcome guests sip some wine while they view their exhibits, however, the galleries are open year-round. San José del Cabo’s historical downtown also offers world-class restaurants from Mexican gourmet cuisine to authentic Thai food. San José has a beautiful beach where you can take a horseback ride and explore the estuary that is home to many different bird species. East Cape People often call it “the old Cabo” because of its pristine beaches and small fishing towns such as Buena Vista and Los Barriles. The East Cape begins just east of San José and extends about 100 miles up the Sea of Cortez coast. Sixty miles outside of San José is the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, an eight

4

fingered coral reef that offers outstanding snorkelling and scuba diving and turtle nesting on the beach. Very popular for fishing and surfing, the East Cape also attracts kite surfers, campers and folks who just want to get away from it all. Todos Santos Located on the Pacific Ocean side, Todos Santos is an oasis where artists and surfers flock to enjoy the culture and excellent surf. Home to the famous Hotel California, this charming town offers great restaurants and a cooler climate than Cabo San Lucas and San José due to the Pacific’s breezes. La Paz La Paz is the capital of the state of Baja California Sur and is known for its warm people and beautiful beaches. This authentic Mexican city (as well as the general south Baja region) has been rated as one of the safest in Mexico and still maintains the small town feel that is very welcoming for tourists. La Paz is a departure point for tours and charters to the stunning Espiritu Santo Island as well as whale watching excursions. Stroll down the colorful malecón (boardwalk), walk hundreds of feet in waist high water at Balandra beach or have a fine dining experience; La Paz has a lot to offer. *

LOS CABOS 101 There is a variety of things to do in the Los Cabos area. Enjoy the water while snorkelling and fishing or stay dry and play a round of golf or take an ATV tour. Here is a guide to the main activities in San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas.

SCUBA DIVING & SNORKELLING This is your chance to experience the underwater life in the Sea of Cortez, also known as the “Aquarium of the World.” Prepare yourself for nature to show off as you swim side by side with colourful schools of fish, eels, rays, octopus, sea turtles and more. There are a few ways to snorkel in Cabo: book one of the popular snorkel tours, drive to a beach and swim off the shore or charter your own private boat. Tours last around two or three hours and cost around $40.00 dollars per person. If you’re venturing out on your own, stay away from the Pacific side; its strong currents make it very dangerous for any kind of water sports. SNORKELLING: Pelican Rock This rock attracts many fish and is just an easy five minute boat ride from the Cabo San Lucas Marina. You can take a water taxi from the marina or from Medano beach. Lover’s Beach Accessible only by water taxi. Be aware that this is a high boat traffic area and it’s not roped off for swimmers. Santa Maria Bay Santa Maria is a regular destination for snorkel tours. If you choose to drive there, it’s a very easy swim from the shore to the reef on the far right side of the cove. Chileno Bay This bay is also a common destination for snorkelling tours and has a safe roped off area for snorkellers. Cabo Pulmo Cabo Pulmo is a Natural Marine Reserve in the East Cape that offers possibly the best snorkelling in the area. To get to this eight fingered coral reef you have take about a 2 hour drive from San José del Cabo, but it’s well worth it. SCUBA DIVING DESTINATIONS Note: travel time is from Cabo San Lucas marina Land’s End Intermediate-Advanced 50’-60’ and just 5 minutes by boat you’re swimming with sea lions and moray eels. Also a sunken boat can be seen in the Falls. Sand Falls Beginners - Advanced 30’-100’ Steep sand banks go down sharply into a canyon filled with tropical fish. A short boat ride from shore, the canyon runs from the depths of the Cabo San Lucas bay to within 30 feet off shore. Pelican Rock Beginners - 25’-80’ Just 5 minute boat trip to this large rock that attracts many tropical fish.

Neptune’s Finger Advanced - 80’-100’ Spectacular canyon wall dive. Cabeza de Ballena Beginners - 20’-40’ 25 minute boat ride to dive through large boulders with lots of fish. Santa María Cave Beginners - 20’-40’ - 35 minutes by boat, or dive from the beach. The entrance to Santa Maria canyon has a huge variety of fish which feed right from your hand. Chileno Beginners - 30’-70’ - 35 minute boat ride and a sandy and rocky bottom. PARKING Lots of turtles sighted here, tropical fish, night dives. El Gavilán Intermediate/Advanced - 70’-100’ - 35 minutes by boat. Rocky ledge leading into a canyon where groupers and larger fish are often sitghed. Blow Hole Beginners/Advanced - 30’-70’ - 35 minute boat ride from San Lucas, or just 10 minutes from Chileno beach. Rocky valleys present a variety of fish. Las Salinas Beginners - 30’-45’ - 1.4 hours by boat from San Lucas, or 1 hour by boat from La Playita. A sunken Japanese fishing boat attracts a large assortment of fish. Gordo Banks Advanced - 110’-120’ - 1 hour boat from La Playita, there is a seamount where you can see marlin, hammerheads, skip jacks and at times huge manta rays. Cabo Pulmo Beginner/Advanced - 30’-100’ - 1 hour drive East of San José on the paved road. 5 minutes by boat you’ll find the only living coral reef in the Sea of Cortez.

LOS CABOS 101

BOATING & FISHING Calm waters, extraordinary fishing and perfect weather...some would argue that boating is the most popular attraction in Los Cabos. Whether you want to take a cruise to Santa María Bay on a luxury yacht or wake up at the crack of dawn for a fishing adventure, the options to fit your needs are endless.

BOAT RENTALS Private yachts and sailboats There are several charter companies that can accommodate you depending on what you need. What you do on your trip is really up to you, but it will typically consist of a tour around the arch, fishing for a couple of hours and a cruise to any of the beautiful bays for swimming. Most boats have fishing equipment and a knowledgeable crew, but the main difference between renting a yacht and a fishing boat is the cost.

Fishing Boat Rentals

You can always fish on a yacht, but cruisers and pangas are more commonly used. Pangas and super-pangas are a more affordable option, but cruisers will fit more people and will be more comfortable if the sea is rough on a windy day.

FISHING

There’s a reason why the world’s richest fishing tournament - the Bisbee’s Black & Blue has taken place in Los Cabos for over thirty years. This part of the world offers abundant sea life and an exceptionally high catch success rate. No matter what your level of fishing experience is, Cabo won’t disappoint you.

What to Expect It’s recommended to make a reservation at least one day before. Most charters include a fishing license, bait, tackle and equipment. Some also include food and drink or can be added at an additional cost. The earlier you leave the better; trips usually begin around 6:00 and 7:00 am and last around 6 hours. Cost will depend on the number of people in your party and the size of the boat you choose to rent. 15% to 20% of your charter cost is a customary tip for the crew.

Bait and Tackle Most likely, the boat you charter will include your bait and tackle. If you need your own fresh bait you can buy it along the Cabo San Lucas Marina or the crew you hire can also stop to buy it from the local fishermen on your way out.

SURF SEASONS

June through November The summer months are known to be the best as the Southern Hemisphere’s swells send great waves to the Pacific, Cabo San Lucas, San José and the East Cape. December through February East Cape and Costa Azul are on the flatter side. The Pacific can be good this time of year because it’s exposed to the west swell. March through May This is the windy season. Swells are consistent and you’ll run into fewer crowds.

STAND UP PADDLING

There is something special about paddling out and finding yourself floating in the ocean with just your paddle and your board. Stand up paddling is growing to be more popular each year and is available all around Los Cabos. It’s a great way to see marine life, get a great workout in and enjoy nature. In Médano beach you can rent boards in several locations and paddle along the rocks of Land’s End to make your way to Lover’s Beach and The Arch. Companies like Cabo SUP and SUP Mexico offer not only paddling lessons but also a fantastic yoga class on the board while floating in the water. Tips! • Your feet should be parallel, about hip-width distance apart, centred between the board rails (edges). • Keep toes pointed forward, knees bent and your back straight. • Balance with your hips and core. Keep your arms straight and twist from your torso as you paddle. Think of using your torso to paddle rather than your arms. You have more strength in those abdominal muscles than in your arms. • Your gaze should be level at the horizon. Avoid staring at your feet. • If you’re paddling on the right, your right hand is lower and on the paddle shaft. Your top left hand is on the top of the grip. The elbow (angle) of the paddle faces away from you. • Plant the paddle by pushing the blade all the way under the surface, pull it back to your ankle, then out of the water. To go in a reasonably straight line, paddle about 4 or 5 strokes on one side, then switch to the other. When you switch sides, you’ll reverse hand positions. • When you fall aim yourself to the side, so that you fall into the water and not onto the board. Falling onto the board can cause an injury.

KITE SURFING

This sport is popular mainly in the East Cape due to the El Norte winds. Playa Norte (northeast side of the beach) in Los Barriles is said to be the most popular destination and is also the location for a professional kiteboarding school. La Ventana is also a popular spot and is closer to La Paz. There is less wind in Los Barriles than La Ventana, but the surf is bigger. The best months are January, February, March, October, November, December.

LOS CABOS 101 “Las Viudas” but keep your eyes peeled because the entrance sneaks up on you. You won’t find any services or vendors so bring all your beach essentials with you.

Tips:

Santa Maria A stunning horseshoe cove with coral coloured sand and an abundant marine life. Boat excursions and private charters often stop here to enjoy the snorkelling and scuba diving that this National Marine Preserve offers. This family friendly beach is relatively secluded, therefore you rarely run into beach vendors. Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the sign that reads “Santa María” and exit the highway at Km. 13. Follow the dirt road until you reach the parking area. No services and hardly any shade. You can rent umbrellas on the beach, but if you happen to have one bring it anyway. Bring snorkelling gear!

Location:

Imagine floating in a turquoise bay with pink sand or riding some epic waves, each beach offers something unique. Here is a list of the must-see beaches to help you decide which one is your dream beach.

Cabo San Lucas Medano Beach

This is where the action is. El Médano (as the locals call it) is a 2 mile stretch of hotels, restaurants and bars right on the sand. It’s a swimmable and family friendly beach with endless options for souvenir shopping. All water sports and activities are available. If you want to take a water taxi to Lover’s Beach, this is the spot to do it. Its stunning view of land’s end and the vast entertainment options makes it a must-see. In the heart of downtown Cabo San Lucas. You can walk through the east side of the marina or access it via Avenida del Pescador street. Get prepared to be approached by souvenir vendors. If you’re not there for the shopping, the only thing you can do is say “No Gracias.” Prices don’t vary too much from one water sports rental place to another. Make a trip to Lover’s Beach while you’re there.

Location: Tips:

Lover’s Beach

Getting there is an adventure in itself due to the fact that it’s only reachable by boat or kayak. The easiest way is to take a water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Medano Beach. Prices are around $15.00 per person. Ask your captain to cruise by the arch and the sea lion rock for some great photo opportunities. Once you arrive you’ll notice the striking rock formations and caves. Walk to the other side of the rocks and you’ll now find yourself looking at the Pacific Ocean; the locals call this Divorce Beach. This side is very dangerous for swimming because of the powerful undertow, so only swim on Lover’s Beach. Land’s End beside the famous arch. Only accessible by boat. There are a couple of vendors that offer beers and water but you won’t find any other services. A good idea is to spend the day at Medano Beach and take an hour or two to go to Lover’s Beach; this should be enough time to explore and enjoy this natural wonderland.

Location: Tips:

Along the Corridor Las Viudas

Las Viudas (The Widows) beach is not visible from the road and is possibly the most private beach you will find on this list. What makes it unique are the rock formations that create small pools and coves where you can have a private and peaceful beach day. This beach is swimmable with caution, but if you find your own pool you can avoid the waves. Turn right at Km. 12.5 of the corridor and follow the dirt road down to the beach. There is a sign that reads

Location: 10

Tips:

Chileno

A very popular location for snorkelling, swimming or just spending the day under the newly installed palapas. You’ll find tide pools at the east end of the beach and beautiful reefs for excellent snorkelling and scuba diving. This is the only beach with public rest rooms and it has plenty of palapas for shade. Going from Cabo San Lucas towards San José, follow the signs for Chileno Beach Club near Km. 14 of the main highway. If you visit Chileno on a weekend make an effort to arrive early; snorkelling visibility is often better in the mornings, you’ll avoid the mid-day snorkel tours and if you beat the crowds you’ll be guaranteed a palapa for that much needed shade. Bring Snorkelling gear!

Location: Tips:

San Jose del Cabo Palmilla

Palmilla is known for its family friendly calm waters and mile long stretch of beach. Located within the resort community of Palmilla, you will find yourself surrounded by oceanfront luxury homes, the One&Only Hotel and the world renowned Jack Nicklaus Ocean Nine golf course. Pangas and fishing cruisers are available for charter but you won’t find water sport rentals such as kayaks or jet skis. Take the Palmilla ramp exit at Km. 27. Follow the signs and turn into the main beach parking area before the entrance to the One&Only Hotel. Palmilla is popular among local families on the weekends, so arrive early if you want a palapa or bring your own umbrella. No services available.

Location: Tips:

Costa Azul If what you’re looking for is a good surf spot that doesn’t require driving out of town... this is it. Head over to Zipper’s for a surf session and lunch and beers at the restaurant. To the west of Zippers is Acapulquito beach where Cabo Surf Hotel and Mike Doyle Surf School are located. You can find surf shops in the area where you can rent surf and SUP boards and set up lessons. The surf is bigger during the summer and in the winter it’s a good spot for snorkelling and swimming. Exit at Km. 28 via the Costa Azul Bridge. Swimming with caution is possible in this area but keep an eye out for surfers.

Location: Tips:

La Playita

La Playita (the little beach) is a long stretch of beach where you will often find locals fishing from the shore and families with children enjoying the beach-front

playground. On the right end of La Playita you will find a roped-off swimming area just outside the beautiful Puerto Los Cabos 500 slip marina entrance. To the left is the natural open beach where you can swim, skim-board and enjoy a peaceful beach day away from the crowds. Follow the signs to La Playita/Puerto Los Cabos form Boulevard Mijares in downtown San José del Cabo (across from the fire department). You will find new and well maintained bathrooms, palapas and fishing charters. There are no food services directly on the beach, but there are several casual restaurants in the surrounding area.

Location: Tips:

On the Pacific Cerritos

Cerritos beach is a popular surf spot and swimming is relatively safe. The scenic 45 minute drive from Cabo San Lucas is well worth the trip as you drive along the pristine Pacific coast. The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant is a perfect spot to spend a relaxing day on the beach or if you want to be active you can take a surf lesson at Baja Surf Camp or rent surf and boogie boards at the Costa Azul Surf Shop. Exit at Km. 66 of the Cabo San Lucas - Todos Santos highway. Watch the markers as there is no sign. Drive about 1.7 miles to the beach area. Lounge chairs, restrooms, food and drinks are available at The Cerritos Beach Club Restaurant.

Location: Tips:

La Paz Balandra

A stunning bay that will take your breath away. You can walk back and forth in the bay in waist high water that is crystal clear with shades of blue turquoise. Follow the shore towards the north-east side and you will find the famous “mushroom rock” as well as other interesting rock formations. You won’t regret it visiting Playa Balandra! About 30 minutes from the boardwalk in La Paz. Simply follow the main drag along the boardwalk, then through Costa Baja Golf Course and continue to wind around the coast and through the mountains until you see the signs for the beach. No bathroom facilities. There is a truck where you can buy water and snacks, but it is recommended to bring your own in case they are closed. There are palapas, but not a lot. You can rent kayaks and snorkel gear.

Location: Tips:

Loreto Isla Coronado

A wildlife reserve where visitors may anchor, snorkel, scuba and camp. The panga ride usually includes a cruise around the island where it’s very common to see sea lions, seals and even sea otters. The only swimmable beach on the island has pristine white sand and shallow crystal clear turquoise water, which creates ideal snorkelling conditions. Coronado Island is the ideal place for an adventure or to simply immerse yourself in nature and relax. About 7 miles or 30 minutes (on boat) northeast of Loreto. To get to Coronado Island you must take a boat or a panga. You will find pangas in Loreto’s Marina that you can hire to take you. The best option is to ask your concierge to arrange this for you. There are no services or restaurants on the beach. There are several large palapas with tables and benches and also an eco-restroom. Bring hiking shoes if you plan to explore the area. Bring Snorkelling gear!

LOS CABOS is an energetic place. San José del Cabo buzzes with culture and tradition while Cabo San Lucas alerts your senses with bright lights and sounds of a good time coming from every direction. Sporting events, fishing tournaments, conventions, concerts, charity galas, parties and festivals are a few examples of the many events that take place year-round.

HAPPENING

NOW

MARCH 1-4 ~ LA PAZ CARNAVAL

By Fernando Rodriguez. The Carnaval in La Paz is a yearly six day festival, which coincides with similar events that are celebrated in every major city in Mexico, commemorating the Rio de Janeiro inspired parties that occur the week before lent. La Paz Mayor, Esthlela Ponce Beltran, saved the festivities from extinction last year by obtaining sponsors from outside the La Paz community who helped finance the $880,000 US dollars it takes to put on such an extravagant celebration of floats, parades, live music, and the security to maintain order in an atmosphere of alcohol over-indulgence. Last year’s musical line-up consisted of bands playing everything from nationally favored Banda, Ranchero, and Reggaeton genres. The growth of Carnaval in La Paz has increased to the point of having big Mexican musical acts perform at La Paz stadium, ever since the main stage at the Malecón could no longer hold the multitude of adoring fans after the 2012 edition. The parade at Carnaval La Paz, runs from one end of the 3 mile (5K) Malecón to the other. The appointment of the Carnaval Queen is still a title held in much esteem and fiercely contested by aspiring local young ladies of Mexican beauty. Businesses along the streets of the Malecón thrive in the mass delirium of party happy locals and visitors. Carnaval La Paz has origins that date back to the late 1880s that was originally created as a grand party for the socially elite of that era. Carnaval La Paz has since become a cultural staple of the capitol city of Southern Baja California for a little more than 120 years. History records indicate that Carnaval La Paz became a very popular social gathering during the 1950s and 60s that began to attract not just the loyal town folk, but tourists too.

MARCH 8 ~ WINE & CHEESE FESTIVAL

The Sheraton Hacienda del Mar Golf & Spa Resort in Los Cabos will host their first Cheese & Wine Festival with part of the proceeds benefiting the orphanage Albergue Escolar No. 30 Profr. Tickets for the Festival of Cheese and Wine have cost $ 480 pesos per person. For reservations: (624) 145-8000

MARCH 7-17 ~ THE FESTIVAL OF SAN JOSÉ DEL CABO

By Fernando Rodriguez. This eleven day festival is in honor of the city’s patron saint, San José (St. Joseph). The event kicks off with live music on March 7, held at the plaza in the heart of downtown, directly in front of the Catholic Church. Carnivals and parades are held on the two weekends of the event. Food booths are visible all through the central downtown area, serving up everything from fresh, warm tamales and sugared pumpkin candies. The Festival is a complete family-oriented affair, which is one of the biggest street parties the city puts on year after year every mid-March. ‘’I have been to the Festival many times, and it’s always a lot of fun. Everyone seems so happy. They have music and people dancing and the carnival is somewhat like walking back in time as some of the rides look like they came from a county fair in the 60s. I’ve had some of the best tamales ever!,’’ said Martin Ochoa, a six year Los Cabos resident, originally from the Orange County, CA. There is also a horse corral next to the Estuary where festival organizers put on an annual rodeo that is part of the eleven day celebration, that culminates with a big name artist or band performing free at the Historic Downtown Plaza.

Good Clean Spring break Fun by Cathy Buchannan Finals are not yet complete, but in Universities across North America students are taking study breaks to book flights and accommodations for Spring Break in Los Cabos. When exam week is over, suitcases are packed, planes are boarded and the fun begins. Ready for some cycling? In San José del Cabo, the Puerto Los Cabos bicycle experience takes you on a 3.5-mile journey through the Sculpture Gardens, the Leonora Carrington sculpture collection and the Wirikuta Cactus Botanical Park. Rent bicycles at Hotel El Ganzo and make a day of the ride around the Puerto Los Cabos marina in an activity blending sunshine, great views, culture and physical activity. Stop at Ganzo de Playa Beach Club at the end of the ride to rent kayaks, outrigger canoes, stand up paddleboards or just enjoy lunch and take a swim in the Sea of Cortez. In Los Cabos, there is as much fun to be had under the surface of the Sea of Cortez and in the foothill canyons of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains as there is to be found on the beaches. SCUBA adventures and desert exploration on foot, fourwheelers, Baja buggies or even camels are also an option. To feel less like a tourist and more like a local, consider dedicating a volunteer vacation day. A number of local charities would welcome your participation and there is no better way to learn about a community than getting involved with a local non-profit. Spring break day trips are also fun and destinations including Todos Santos, Cabo Pulmo and the state capital La Paz, are worthy of discovery. When heading out on the road, please remember that seat belts are required and cell phone use while driving is cause for a ticket. Watch for cows on the highways, especially when driving at night. Have fun, and take home lasting memories from your Spring Break in Los Cabos.

Who is the Chef? By Bonnie Chase

For this edition of ‘Who is the Chef?’ we travel down a rustic dirt road into the estuary of San José del Cabo, just a mile from the Sea of Cortez, to a certified organic farm and openair restaurant called Huerta Los Tamarindos. This charming farm and eatery was developed by owner and executive Chef Enrique Silva, whose love of fresh herbs and produce has traveled with him throughout his career, all over the western world. Enrique Silva was born in the northern Mexico town of Navojoa, Sonora where he studied Agricultural Engineering. Upon graduating, he traveled to the Los Cabos region of Baja and began working in the hospitality industry, most notably at Hotel Palmilla (now OneandOnly Palmilla) where he was mentored by master chef Larry Nicola. Enrique left Baja in 1994 to help inaugurate the Alyeska Prince Hotel in Girdwood, Alaska where he worked as restaurant manager at the elegant Prince Court restaurant. The following year he reunited with Nicola as manager of the chef’s signature downtown eatery, Nicola. In 1996 Enrique returned to Los Cabos and partnered with Fernando Hernandez to open their own restaurant, Tequila, which offered the freshest possible ingredients and fused Mexican, Asian, and Mediterranean flavors. It was one of the first fine-dining establishments in what was still a very small town. In 2003 Enrique’s love of agriculture and a lack of local fresh produce led him to begin developing his own organic farm, Huerta Los Tamarindos. Enrique began cultivating crops that include numerous varieties of basil, rosemary, sage, marjoram, thyme, chives, lemon grass, tomatoes, eggplant and much more. Today Huerta Los Tamarindos is one of only two USDA and Canada Organic certified organic farms in the area and is a highly sought-after restaurant with gorgeous farm views. Huerta Los Tamarindos offers farm tours, cooking classes, and a menu that has guests coming back. Enjoy Enrique’s favorite recipe!

ART & CULTURE

Pablo Maggio and Mireya ESCULTURA EN CUERO by yeye

Artists have been using leather for centuries. However, working with this unforgiving medium requires truly masterful skill. From elaborate saddle covers used by Nomads of the Altaic Region in the 5th century BC to contemporary sculptures, examples of various techniques may be found in European Museums today. The artistic journey of Argentinian Maestro Pablo Maggio demonstrates his evolution through his travels. His art design signature -- from the roots of his Gaucho artisan heritage, through his European experience of Venetian artistic expression and combined with the passionate romance he is still living in Mexico – has, in my opinion, the touch of one universal creative principle: that the sun revolves with another star as its partner. Mireya, a contemporary dancer with artistic hands, is not only Pablo’s apprentice, but is also his life companion and mother to his children. Mireya humbly gives all artistic credit to Pablo, but her art reminds us that often, the pupil surpasses the teacher. Together, the two create work in leather sculpture which is admired and collected by people around the world. Like the forces of yin and yang, their feminine and masculine styles complement each other in harmony; to try to identify them separately would be to deconstruct a symphony. “Discipline,” Mireya says, “Every day, the artist has to work on his art every day. Even if it’s just for a moment or two, it must be done every day.” Continual practice is the key to success. We all are bound to succeed with the right effort..*

Los Cabos Art scene is proud to be home to Pablo and Mireya’s leather sculpture. You can find them at our San José Organic Farmer’s Market every Saturday. For those in Cabo San Lucas, Pablo’s Art is at beautiful beach resort Villa del Palmar.

My Experience with

TRADITIONAL MEXICO By Photographer Bruce Herman

THE CHARREADA

The Charreada or Charreria is a wonderfully, colourful and action packed traditional Mexican rodeo event that was developed on the haciendas of old México. It has been aptly described as “Living History” and an’ art form” born of the demands of a life working with cattle and horses. The Charros themselves often come from extended families with a tradition of Charreada going back many generations. There are 9 events for men and one recently added for women. This photo was shot in San José del cabo during “San José Days,“ around the weekend of March 22nd, which takes at the Lienzo Charro. This can be found at the south east end of town on the road to the beach hotel strip, near the Fonatour water works. Events take place all week, but the bigger shows are on weekend afternoons. This is a great show, and wonderful way to watch and take part in a real piece of rich Mexican tradition. Hope to see you there! The LCCF 8th Annual

FRED DUCKETT CHALLENGE GOLF TOURNAMENT By Julie Anderson

WORLD CLASS GOLF WITH A GREAT BIG HEART! The Los Cabos Children’s Foundation’s signature fundraiser of the year will take place at the exclusive Querencia and Palmilla Golf Courses in San Jose del Cabo the weekend of March 20-22, 2014. As one of Cabo’s most anticipated annual charity events of the season for golfers and non-golfers alike, “The Fred Duckett Challenge” is enjoyed by growing numbers of golfers, social attendees and lucky vacationers who have discovered this fun-packed week-end! Every year more and more golfers and their significant others are joining the fun, featuring world-class golf on two of the most beautiful ocean-front courses in this hemisphere, fabulous people, a perfect climate, exquisite dining, heartfelt giving for a most worthwhile charity, cultural activities…..and all of this packed-in with a stunning view of the turquoise- blue waters of the Sea of Cortez! Great Golf and Celebrations Along with three days of world-class golf, entertainment, dining and events are planned at the top-ranked Querencia Country Club links and the world-renowned One and Only Palmilla Golf Club. Enjoy lavish haute cuisine evenings leading to a Grand Gala under the stars, at which the tournament champions are rewarded with their trophies and a very soul-stirring presentation of LCCF’s work with the children in the local community which regally rounds out this remarkable weekend of sport, celebration and giving.

Here’s the Great Big Heart Proceeds benefit the Los Cabos Children’s Foundation (LCCF) founded ten years ago by South Dakota/ Cabo philanthropist Tom Walsh, and whose mission is: “To provide medical, educational and humanitarian assistance to the children, their families and supportive organizations of the Los Cabos area”. What started out as a solution for a few local children suffering from cancer has now grown into an organization that is facilitating improved health care and a better quality of life for local children of low-income families on a much greater scale. Working in solidarity with the Baja California Sur State Government, US hospitals, foundations and local non-profit organizations, the 10 year old Spirit of Joy Children’s Cancer Program, founded by LCCF, moved into a new home in the Salvatierra Hospital in La Paz and was inaugurated earlier this year. Children battling cancer no longer need to leave the state to receive the critical care they need. In June of last year, LCCF began its local cardio/ pediatriac surgery program for children with congenital heart defects and completed the first ten open heart surgeries ever done in the state. During the first week of December 2013, another eleven surgeries and six critical catherizations were completed successfully by chief cardiac surgeon Dr. James Hammel, from the Children’s Hospital and Medical Center of Omaha, Nebraska, together with his team of 22 eminent children’s surgical specialists. There are few things in this world that are more heart-wrenching than to talk to some of these children who are very sad and depressed due to their malfunctioning heart on one day, and only a few days after their surgery, are running around the hospital corridors in their “Heart Heroes” capes so incredibly changed and happy. Anyone’s heart will be touched and their soul will be warmed to see how important this help is for these families, without which many of these children would not live to see their next birthday. In addition to these two major programs, in 2013 more than 350 thousand dollars were granted by LCCF to local qualified nonprofits that are doing the critical day-today hands-on work so needed in our local communities.

For Non-golfers, too! An exciting number of activities for non-golfing partners during the day on both Friday and Saturday have been planned. A must see and favorite each year, is the Friday morning guided bus tour of the children’s “hands-on” health organizations assisted through LCCF grants. In addition, thrilling whale watching trips and spa services will be offered each day. On Friday and Saturday, cooking classes will be offered featuring the executive chefs from Don Sanchez Restaurant and the One & Only Palmilla Resort. We encourage all attendees to schedule activities prior to your arrival at The Duckett to ensure that space is available for each tour and event. HEALTHY LIVING

BE Spring “Every person needs to take one day away. A day in which one consciously separates the past from the future. Jobs, family, employers, and friends can exist one day without any one of us, and if our egos permit us to confess, they could exist eternally in our absence. Each person deserves a day away in which no problems are confronted, no solutions searched for. Each of us needs to withdraw from the cares which will not withdraw from us.” Maya Angelou, Wouldn’t Take Nothing for My Journey Now The cycle of life is never ending, still we all feel a need to take a break once in a while, A great season to take it is Spring, when sun shines, love blossoms, and the natural year begins again. Winter has passed, we get rid of the old, and welcome a new beginning. The wiser, and most relaxing, way to take a break is by doing nothing. Doing nothing has such a transformational effect in the practitioner that it is universally considered an art. Only the extraordinaire are able to be still. Martial artist, yogis, philosophers, scientists, monks, mothers, fathers, daughters and sons, all true leaders practice a lifetime to master the art of doing nothing, the goal is to understand the truth of being, the universe. To stop, to be still, and to contemplate the Self, breath by breath, is not everyone’s idea

of taking a break, that is what meditation is for, right? This is a vacation. In general taking a brake is a desire to break from routine, to do something totally different from our daily activity, to see different people, to eat different food, to replenish, to restore, to let go and be inspired. Los Cabos’ Spring is a wonderful choice to do this. Our readers are those who travel here to relax, party, and live a lifestyle of elite luxury that only in Nature can be found. Peaceful splendour, blue, sky, sun, ocean, sand, desert, and all the outdoor adventure designed by those who prefer not to stay still, but to enjoy the land through its direct experience and exploration. Nowhere but here, you will find such party during Spring break and nowhere but here, you will find such retreat. The choices are plenty, still the choice is yours. It is all about breaking free, isn’t? This Spring break starts with Los Cabos Green Fest. A delight of music, yoga, kayak and SUP, their yoga on Friday March 29 at Medano beach in Cabo San Lucas is a free event. It starts at 7:00 am, is guided by 3 Yoga Masters, is open to all ages and levels, and ambient music is provided by Pedal Power. The cycle of life is never ending, and it obeys an ultimate natural law: change. It is always arising, it is always passing away. Arising, passing away, impermanent. All that matters is this moment. To do or not to do? Well… that is your question. Regardless of how you choose to take a break this Spring, may your Cabo rest be full of inspiration to live the life you love, for the best life is the one we don’t want to brake away from. Utopía you say? Poetry it is then, as William Wordsworth wrote: Rest and be thankful.*

Take a rest Inhale. Exhale. Why am I doing what I am doing? What is my intention? Where is the focus of my attention? For to be able to balance, I must observe my unbalances, I must see them as they are; and if I think I have no unbalances, wow, I am the most unbalanced of all. Taking rest is an important practice for a successful life. In fact, activity is less productive when we feel the lack of rest. Stillness might be the one feeling that allows us to see clearly, and the one most effective moment when we allow the Universe to catch up with us. Most yoga teachers will tell you that the one pose you should not miss, ever, is savasana, as is perhaps the most important part of an asana yoga practice. This pose brings a deep meditative state of rest, it allows the body a chance to regroup and reset itself. It is an opportunity to let go and shed regular habits, if only for a few minutes. Savasana gives the nervous system a chance to integrate that in what can be thought of as a brief pause before it is forced once again to deal with all the usual stresses of daily life. Like a vacation, it is all about finding ourselves in a comfortable place to restore our body and mind, to see ourselves in perspective and find balance. Seeing ourselves as we really are, gives us the opportunity to master our habits, our thoughts, our actions, our words... Our world. When my mind is out of control, thoughts run wild from one to the other without really making any sense, I jump from thinking about breakfast to thinking about what I should have said to this person or that person, what I should have done, then I think about what I will do and what I will say, stealing myself from the very present moment I am in. Ironically, it is a scientific fact that we think the same thoughts every day, in a repetitive motion, life still passing us by. When I master my mind, thoughts also run wild from one to the other without really making any sense, the difference is I can see it as it happens and actually control what I do or say, and eventually what I think, for the benefit of all. To keep a balanced mind, a quite mind, a clear mind, I must take rest, be still. Only then, insight can happen, for what use is to be myself if I can’t be my own master? * Savasana: Lay comfortably on your back. Relax your muscles. Observe the breath and body sensations. Take rest.

MARKET UPDATE

design challenges an expert help with anything about living here

By Wendy Rains

By Blake Harrington

A NEW YEAR BRINGS NEW INVENTORY FOR BUYERS In what seems to be just a blink of the eye, 2013 is behind us and now our fresh start to 2014 has begun! Just like any new start to a new year, there are some things we can all expect…Gym memberships will spike and for us in Cabo, new homes will come on the market. In our seasonal market here in Los Cabos, it is common that Listing Brokers suggest to their clients to bring their new listing active during our high season when the majority of the buyers are in town looking to purchase. Thus, January has brought new listings and new inventory to our market, which is very exciting for buyers. While most of the new inventory and new listings are re-sales, something we are seeing more of is that developers seem to be adjusting to the market and offering more of a variety products at different prices. For example, some of the exclusive private clubs and residential communities have now released new condos and townhomes at more attractive pricing, rather than just $2 Million dollar and up homes as they did in the past. This is great for our market because while many of our clients see the strong future in Los Cabos and Mexico, some wish to start more conservative and invest as the years go on. Being able to offer listings at all different pricing levels is a great service to the buyers we work with at our brokerage. When we first consult with an active buyer, we encourage them to dig into the market statistics and learn about our market and see at what level they feel comfortable investing. Educating our clients on the new inventory, developer offerings, and the different price ranges and amenities that come with them, allows our buyers to purchase with absolute confidence. Our team of agents are heavily involved in the community, attend all open houses and developer events, and are full time Realtors who monitor the movement and sales in our market on a daily basis. This type of commitment is what our clients expect from us, as they should. In 2014, our company and it’s partners and affiliates see a bright future in our market. We have nothing but confidence in “The Baja” and just as we encourage our clients, we are heavily invested in the area and have even opened an office in Loreto to account for the demand in the area. We are truly excited about what the future brings and proud to be a part of it.

What’s important to know about placement before constructing a home on a lot?

It’s a given that once you decide to buy your lot, you probably have walked it many times over and you have also probably ascertained where you would most likely place your home. Many people then go on to hire an architect or designer from their hometown, and I have always been surprised when clients bring me plans drawn up by someone who has never visited the site. Not being the most convenient place to get to, or perhaps wanting to save money by not flying someone down here, that happens a lot in Baja. Since folks usually think the most important elements to tell their architect is where the best view is and a rough idea of north, south, east and west, they leave it at that, so it’s easy to understand why orientation mistakes are made. The most important thing for you to do is to take the time to STAND ON YOUR LAND... often... and at different times of day, sunrise to sunset. How will the light play on the house? Where will you be spending most of your indoor or outdoor time? What do you prefer looking at when? If at all possible, talk to as many neighbors as possible and find out how the winds blow at different times of the year…which direction do they come from…ocean, mountains? SITE ORIENTATION Properly positioning your house on your site can save you money on your utility bills and affect your comfort year round. In Baja, the sun and heat play a dominant role. Anything goes, though, since for the most part we are not governed by the usual subdivision style of traditionally placing homes facing the street, and therefore have far more flexibility to optimize orientation. The north side would be the cool side, as the sun spends very little time in the northern sky during the course of a day. The south side is the sunny side since the sun spends more time in the southern sky. Being in the southern latitude, the summer sun is nearly straight up at noon, and lower in the sky in winter. Most of the time it is climbing to its peak in the southeastern sky, descending in the southwestern sky. The east side of a house will take a lot of the sun’s morning heat. The west side of a house will bear the brunt of the sun’s heat, and long, west facing wall areas will retain a lot of the heat that builds up during the day, especially from 2-5pm. Many of our best views, though, are to the west, and we tend to like large windows to take it all in. Covered terraces, trellises, trees, and sunshades can best buffer this exposure. BENEFIT FROM NATURE Rectangular buildings should be oriented with the long sides running east-west, receiving less direct sun in summer. Long and narrow plans also facilitate “day-lighting” and natural ventilation. Avoid placing skylights in east-west vertical or horizontal orientations, resulting in more summer heat. South facing windows are easy to shade with overhangs or awnings, and north-facing windows receive good daylight. Because of low sun angles, eastwest windows are the most difficult when it comes to controlling unwanted heat gain. Driveways and parking areas should be located on the east or north sides of buildings, reducing the heat buildup during hot afternoons. Understanding the annual wind directions and velocity on your site is very important. Think about shielding from adverse winds and benefiting from favorable winds. CONFLICT BETWEEN ASPECTS OF SITE ORIENTATION For example, the best solar orientation may be in conflict with the best wind orientation. Your personal judgment will have to rule. Even though prevailing wind conditions may be the same for a 5- 10 miles radius, specific sites will still be influenced by various factors such as proximity to mountains or ocean, and cause different effects. Two lots can be in the same neighborhood, but one might have more protective elements than the other. CONSTRUCTION AND LANDSCAPING TECHNIQUES INFLUENCE WIND To place rooms that don’t require lots of glass for views or solar use, on the north side helps. Flat roofs are quite common down here, and offer a great deal of wind resistance, but a better alternative would be a long sloping roof, which is also more energy efficient. To take

REAL ESTATE full advantage of natural ventilation, place openings in opposite walls that allow for cross ventilation. In a two-story house, the openings can be effectively tied into the stairwells to provide for continuous ventilation. A vacuum causes ventilation from the sheltered side of the house, which forces air to suck through the house rather than wind pressure from the windward side. SURROUNDING FEATURES If you know the empty lot next door is for sale, assume that someday there will be a house within your view site and plan accordingly, allowing for more privacy on that side. You may decide it’s best to place your home more toward the other side of the lot. If you have future plans for a pool or guest casita, allow ample room for trucks to access those areas. It’s a good idea to take utility access into account as well. How will the gas truck fill your propane tank? If your gates will be locked most of the time, install a fill line accessible from the street. You must not forget the location of the septic system and its access as well. SUSTAINABLE SITING involves using vegetation, grading and stabilization techniques to prevent erosion, and maximize use of existing trees for shade. Other sustainable tips include integrating passive and active solar strategies, using light colored roofing materials to reduce energy loads, water retention systems, restoring degraded areas to increase healthy habitat for native species, conserving water by landscaping with native plants, and controlling erosion by seeding and mulching. Bet you didn’t realize how complex an arrangement of forms and elements our homes are! They require a lot of money to build and maintain, but for most of our lives they provide us with shelter and embody our cultures and personalities. Your home is your life support system so think seriously about where you put it. For more information: wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_declination ngdc.noaa.gov/geomag/declination
