The Ultimate Guide to Transportation in Los Cabos

Exploring a foreign country is an exciting adventure, but navigating the transportation options can sometimes be a daunting task. Let’s dive into the variety of transportation available in Los Cabos. From traditional modes like hotel taxis to more common day-to-day alternatives like Uber, we'll guide you through the best ways to get around and make the most of your visit.

Where are you in Cabo?

The word "Cabo" has a nice ring to it, but where you are on the map may not always be clear. Los Cabos is divided into two municipalities: San José del Cabo, where the international airport is located, and Cabo San Lucas, where you can find the arch. Uniting these two very distinctive towns lies the Tourist Corridor, a 20-mile (33 km) stretch of highway (20-30 minute drive) where every exit will take you to one of the many renowned hotels in the destination or to one the region's must visit beaches. Understanding where you are in Cabo and where you are going will make planning your day and deciding on your transportation preference that much easier.

Hotel transportation

Our first suggestion is to get in contact with your hotel, especially if you booked via a travel agency. Your reservation might include things like round trip airport service. This can be really helpful and allow you to enjoy Los Cabos as soon as possible. Also check how they recommend you get around town. In general, this selection is on the expensive side, but it’s safe and reliable.

CAN I TAKE AN UBER?

Yes, (but sometimes no). Ubers are all over the place and are generally an inexpensive alternative, especially for short rides. The big caveat here is that they are not allowed to pick up clients at the airport or many of the big hotels along the corridor (though they can still drop you off). We recommend checking with your hotel before trying to solicit an Uber or any similar service, and check some of the other options in this article.

Taking a Taxi

Taking a taxi in Los Cabos is safe and, often, the most convenient pick. However, as easy as jumping into the back of the taxi may seem, the price at the end of the trip can be a not-so-pleasant surprise. The best advice we can give you is to ask the fare before getting in to make the best decision.

Renting a Car

Rental cars are an incredible way to discover Baja at your own pace and go off the beaten path. Whether you are in Cabo San Lucas or San José, going off the main streets can look a bit chaotic at first, but soon you'll get the rhythm of the local transit. Just be aware that if your ideal vacation is to stay at your all inclusive resort and just explore downtown, we would recommend saving yourself some money and opting for a different means of travel.

Getting a Private Driver

Private transport is by far the most recommended method of transportation among regular visitors. It can cater to your specific needs, accommodate different group sizes, wait for you after an activity, or stick with you the entire day. All of this while generally being cheaper than regular or hotel taxis and being able to reach places where an Uber can struggle.

Taking the Bus

The public transportation in Los Cabos is quite simple to use. There are principal routes that connect Cabo San Lucas with San José del Cabo and can pick you up or drop you off right in front of the airport. This is, hands down, the cheapest way to travel, but be aware that it won't let you off right at the door of your hotel. Also, take into account that this is a common way for locals to commute to work and back, and can be quite crowded at certain times of the day.

Some more advice about transportation in Los Cabos

From private drivers to taking the bus, we’ve taken a look at every option you'll come across in your visit. But before you continue planning your trip, here are some final tips to help you get around Cabo worry-free.

Take traffic into account. Since the Tourist Corridor is of such importance for mobility in the area, you can imagine how a traffic jam might impact your plans.

We can't stress this enough- do not cross the corridor on foot, even if you see some locals doing it. It is dangerous, and saving a few minutes is never worth the risk.

The best tip we can give you is to plan ahead to make sure you go with your best choice and make the most of your trip.

Whether you're looking to navigate the roads or handle emergency situations, our lessons will help you communicate effectively and enhance your driving experience.

MONEY TIP$ ABOUT THE WIFI: WHY GET A SIM CARD?

Understand the exchange rate: Keep track of the current exchange rate from USD to pesos to ensure you get a fair deal.

Consider cash vs. credit: While USD is widely accepted, using a credit card with favorable exchange rates can be beneficial. Carry some cash for smaller establishments or emergencies.

Research bank fees: Be aware of any international transaction fees your bank may charge and compare them to other options.

Have some cash on hand: Carry around $100 USD worth of pesos to cover situations where credit cards may not be accepted or for smaller, non-touristy stores.

Compare rates and locations: Exchange rates can vary from booth to booth and location to location. Look for the best rate available.

Be cautious at the airport: Avoid exchanging large amounts of cash at the airport, as the rates may be unfavorable. Wait until you reach town for better options.

Explore other payment options: Personal checks are not widely accepted, and banks can be meticulous about signatures and identification. Intercam is a foreign-friendly bank worth considering.

Cross the border for better rates: If entering Mexico by car, consider exchanging your currency on the Mexican side of the border for potentially better rates.

It's important to stay connected while traveling, whether you need directions or find yourself in an emergency. Public Wi-Fi is very limited in Los Cabos. If you're planning on leaving your hotel and exploring on your own, you might want to invest in a SIM card. The convenience and potential cost savings of using a local SIM card compared to international roaming or relying on public Wi-Fi are significant, and you can find them at local convenience stores. There are different data packages available, and you can tailor them to your needs and the duration of your stay. Make sure your phone is unlocked before arriving in Los Cabos! That way, you can use a local SIM card that will enable you to stay connected, use navigation apps, access travel information (such as our website!), and communicate with others during your stay.

DRIVING IN LOS CABOS IMPORTANT PHONE NUMBERS

Mexico recognizes driver's licenses issued in English, including US, Canadian, British, EU, Australian, New Zealand licenses, etc.

If you plan to live in Mexico long-term, it's advisable to obtain a Mexican driver's license.

Mexican speed bumps ("topes") may not always be marked or have warning signs.

Be cautious of potholes, uneven surfaces, and inadequate signage on some roads in Los Cabos.

Mexico utilizes a "return system" where U-turns are made past the intended exit instead of using exit ramps.

Inquire about gas station availability, especially in rural areas.

Adhere to posted speed limits, typically in kilometers per hour (km/h).

General speed limit is 40 km/h (25 mph).

Where is Loreto?

Loreto is situated on the eastern coast of the Baja California Peninsula, along the Sea of Cortez (also known as the Gulf of California). It is approximately 350 kilometers (220 miles) north of La Paz, the capital city of Baja California Sur. Loreto holds the distinction of being the first permanent Spanish settlement on the Baja California Peninsula. Established in 1697 by Jesuit missionary Juan María de Salvatierra, it served as the capital of Las Californias for nearly 150 years. Expats in Mexico are the Happiest in The World!

Mexico has continually charmed expats from around the globe, and it’s no wonder why the country consistently ranks among the top choices for expat living. In fact, surveys conducted by a network of over 5 million expats from all around the world have placed Mexico at the top of the ranks for ten consecutive years! Claiming the top spot in 2023.

Let's take a look at why the Expat community insists Mexico is so much better than any other place if you want to travel, live, and work abroad.

Local friendliness:

Mexico is known for its warm and welcoming people. The Expat community in Mexico finds the locals to be amicable and particularly welcoming to foreigners. Making it easy to adapt to the rich Mexican culture.

Approximately three-quarters of expats reported no trouble forming friendships with the locals, a significantly higher percentage than the rest of the world. Tying-in with the ease of settling in, most expats say that the housing situation in Mexico is not a problem. Not only is accommodation easy to find, but also incredibly affordable. This seems to be a prevailing theme in Mexico, A remarkable amount of expats are content with the general cost of living -which was not the case for most countries on the survey- . Moreover, eight for every ten expats express satisfaction with their financial situation.

Quality of life:

It is ideal for those looking to work abroad. Expats that live here are particularly pleased with the abundant career opportunities you can find here. Mexico also excelled in providing workers with a fair pay, and a harmonious work-life balance.

The cherry on top is Mexico’s recreational options, which are among the best worldwide. It’s not only the beautiful destinations you can visit, or the incredible weather throughout the year. It’s also the gastronomy, culture, and nightlife that draws in expat year after year! In general when everything is factored in an overwhelming 90% of expats express their happiness with their lives in Mexico.

Whether it’s the warm and welcoming locals, the ease of forming connections, the affordable cost of living, or the numerous leisure options, Mexico offers a haven for expats seeking a fulfilling and enriching life abroad. As you soar through the clouds and start to descend into San Jose del Cabo’s International Airport, you’ll begin to notice the particularities of the Baja scenery. The mesmerizing blue below in shades you’ve never seen, contrasting with the golden, sandy beaches and pale green of the oceans of cacti and desert. This is what Los Cabos promises; a surreal landscape where the driest of lands coexists with the liveliest of oceans.

As you get closer and closer to land, between the mountains and the sea, you’ll notice a green stain made up of palm trees, willows and grass.

This sanctuary isn't just a haven for nature; it's a testament to the delicate harmony of diverse ecosystems and a reminder of a secret life that awaits those who delve into its depths.

The story of the estuary begins with the Pericu tribe, the original inhabitants of this land. Their nomadic pursuit of freshwater led them to discover the life-sustaining qualities of this unique environment. The estuary became more than a source of water; it became their home, providing not only sustenance but also the means for social development.

Years later, Spanish colonizers were drawn to the potential of the Peninsula and recognized the strategic value of the estuary. The legend says it even served as a hiding spot for pirates. Then, the Mission was founded only a couple of miles away, proving that the richness of the marshland is an important reason, if not the main, as to why San Jose del Cabo exists as we know it today.

The San Jose Estuary held a special place as the favorite watering hole among the community. Its serene waters used to provide an idyllic backdrop for

activities, such as fishing, swimming and gathering around a huge casserole, which they would cook on the spot after catching the biggest blue crabs and borrowing vegetables from nearby gardens. Children’s laughter would mingle with the rustle of palm trees and friendships were forged over shared fishing lines. It was a place where memories were created, where locals connected. The history of the estuary proves that it is not just a passive backdrop but a living museum.

The journey starts in the majestic heights of the Sierra de la Laguna, as water carves its way through the rugged desert bringing life to everything it touches, painting the parched landscape green. It winds down and finds its way to the Estuary, a sanctuary that sustains a diversity of flora and fauna that calls this intricate ecosystem their home.

The estuary serves as a vital connection between the land and sea, as tides and currents interact. The merging of freshwater and saltwater sustains a rare and delicate balance. It also plays a role in temperature regulation, keeping the surrounding area approximately four degrees Celsius cooler.

Like pieces of art, the birds perch themselves on the branches, some visiting from other countries, others endemic to this land. It is the home of approximately 200 different species, mostly birds. One of them is the iconic Peninsular Yellowthroat, a small-sized yellow-colored bird that is considered endangered. Among the array of inhabitants are various species, spanning from insects to fish, turtles, and snakes, all of which discover solace within the estuary’s green embrace. It serves as a crucial site for breeding, feeding, and resting for various migratory species, making it essential for biodiversity conservation and avian preservation.

In the case of San Jose del Cabo's estuary, its health and vitality directly impact the well-being of the entire region, making it essential for maintaining the ecological balance. Today, it faces many challenges. Its preservation is a shared responsibility, a promise to the past and a gift to the future.

The secret life of the San Jose Estuary speaks of coexistence, where land, water, and creatures of all kinds live in harmony. This is how natural spaces become part of the beating heart of a healthy, resilient community. By honoring the Estuary, we’re honoring our profound connection to this land, which is really what brought us all here, after all.

The Untold Stories of La Calle Grande

The tales that make up the history of San Jose del Cabo remain hidden in its brick walls. Most of them you can’t find in a history book. They live in the memory of the children who played on its unpaved streets and have since become adults. These stories get passed on from generation to generation, evolving along the way, always at risk of blowing away in the ocean breeze. We write these stories so they’re not forgotten.

San Jose del Cabo is known for its Jesuit mission, which was established in 1730, cobblestone streets, and art galleries. Among San Jose’s attractions, leading up to the heart of the city like the yellow brick road leading through

Oz to Emerald City, is La Calle Grande. Although it may often be overshadowed by more prominent landmarks, the untold stories of this emblematic street will set you on a historic scavenger hunt, enriching your visit to San Jose del Cabo like few other places will.

The Charm of La Calle Grande

Life happened in La Calle Grande. From its beginnings, The Grand Street was an essential part of life in the town. Its name, which means “the big street,” emerged during the days when San Jose del Cabo first became a town. From political battles, to significant artistic, cultural, social, and sporting events, it was a place where people gathered to share laughter, stories, and dreams.

Its path extended from La Casa Cural, which was where the missionaries lived and is now the House of Culture, to the property of Mr. Esteban Green, better known as "The Crossed House." This street, stretching from north to south, bore witness to the events that make it the town it is today.

Back then, roosters announced the beginning of the day, and as the sun rose, the quiet street slowly came to life like a blooming flower stretching out its petals. The transformation from a simple dirt road to a vibrant cultural epicenter happened in the Golden Era, when, between 1925 and 1945, San Jose del Cabo experienced a period of economic prosperity due to the production of sugar cane and tomatoes along with fishing and shark liver processing.

Calle Grande so special. They make themselves known, not to all tourists, but to travelers who seek to enrich their lives with experiences.

If you walk along La Calle Grande with your tourist goggles on, you’ll find restaurants and shops where you can find the perfect souvenirs: everything from huaraches to embroidered dresses to handicrafts. You’ll find Mexican food and drinks. If you put your traveler glasses on, you’ll notice the walls.

The original walls that tell the story of La Calle Grande can be found within Plaza Don Carlos, which was a house built circa 1850 that was restored and turned into a small commercial center. Today, you can enjoy a cup of coffee and a pastry in Cafe Doña Nena and La Panaderia, a burger at Mono Snack bar, buy wine at Clyde Natural Wines or shop for furniture at Taller Maya. As you roam the small Plaza, pay close attention to the bricks. They offer a glimpse of the town’s early days. They witnessed laughter, joy and sorrow, and are a part of history from the mundane to the astronomical. They are evidence of life itself.

If you listen closely, you’ll hear it beat. Try imagining what it looked like back in 1927 when the clock tower inaugurated the Municipal Palace. One day, that clock ticked for the very first time and it hasn’t stopped since, marking the passage of time. It is a symbol of the town’s timeless charm which hasn’t been replaced or removed. As you stand before it, take notice of the Roman numeral four depicted as IIII instead of IV, evidence of its age and the historical craftsmanship.

Among the brave warriors was Lieutenant Mijares, who was mortally wounded while leading a nighttime assault in an attempt to seize the only artillery left in the enemy’s quarters. He succumbed to his injuries the following day. The legacy of Lieutenant Mijares is immortalized in the heart of San Jose del Cabo through a tribute - the Mijares Obelisk.

Even further back, if we stood in the exact same plaza, but in 1769, we’d witness Jean-Baptiste Chappe d'Auteroche, a French astronomer, on his expedition to observe the transit of Venus, making history. This phenomenon is a rare astronomical event that occurs when the planet Venus passes directly between Earth and the sun, appearing as a small black dot gliding across the fiery ball in the sky. It held immense scientific significance, as it allowed astronomers to measure the distance between the earth and the sun. Once the research was done and as he was packing

to leave, Chappe fell ill and suddenly passed away, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations of astronomers and dreamers alike. To commemorate it, Federico Silva Lombardo designed a monument that was placed right in front of La Casa de la Cultura in 2011.
