I sat down with Ashley Brickner, a local pencil sketch artist and face painter this past month. She gave me an overview of how she started her career, the many aspects of her business, and what advice she would share with upcoming artist like herself. Ashley started doing pencil sketches of her classmates when she was eight years old. After school, she would show her friends their drawings of themselves, and their lips would drop. She knew then she had a special gift. She did not start her Pencil Portraits by Ashley business right away. She spent a few years in banking business which she says, " is what helped me in my business today." She learned about networking, dressing professionally and saving money. In 2002, while working at ROCK 101, she started drawing portraits of her co-workers family, only charging $35.00. After her first portrait, she had four more commissions. Wow, she thought to herself, "this is truly what I am good at and where I belong."
So, she left the corporate world in 2006 and opened a studio with her sister in downtown Greenville at River Art Crossing. She started charging $100.00 for her drawings. Today, she charges $200 to$ 385. She now has her studio in the comfort of her home where she can work and spend time with her family. Ashley is multi-talented and uses her creative gift in a variety of ways. She face paints at local festivals, birthday parties and other functions. She hires out other face painters so they can work for her. She enjoys seeing other women succeed at their craft. She holds art classes for children in their home. Her classes run for four days, one hour each day for $50.00 a child. She teaches them shading, lighting, shadowing and other techniques. "I love teaching children," states Ashley. She visits art classes at the elementary school. She goes into the classroom and helps the children at each table with their drawing, giving them specific techniques to make their masterpiece better.

Then at the end of the class, the teacher draws a name and Ashley pencil sketches a student. She also teaches adults at her Drink and Draw event. This meets at a downtown bar the 2nd Monday of each month. The client provides the food and beverages, and she brings the art supplies. She can also host office parities or a party at someone's home. What a great gift to give to that creative person on your Christmas list! Ashley is also involved in the community. Her major charity she supports is the Myer's Center. She donates 20% of all her sales and some of her own pencil portraits which are hanging up on the walls at the center. When I asked her what she would tell women who want to open their own creative business but do not know where to begin, this was the advice she gave, "Major in business in college. Go out and meet people and learn about their talents. Do not give up. Have confidence. You can do it."
