us about us: history De Tegel BV started during the second blooming period of the cement tile in the early 1980’s. In 1980, Oilily World, a world player in women’s and children’s fashion, built their new headquarters using large scale concrete tiling. Expanding worldwide it was decided to open 300 new flagship stores ‘all over the world’. In Japan, Australia, South Africa , Seoul, Hong Kong, Rio de Janeiro, New York, Beverly Hills, all of the European capitals etc. In all of these shops, with sales areas of at least 400 m2, cement tiles were used. In those days, De Tegel BV was a business unit of Oilily World, which ensured production, placing and maintenance of cement tiles floors in all of these shops. After completion of this expansion De Tegel BV was disengaged from the parent company by a management buy-out, and went on as an independent entity, focusing on the tile market and building materials market. This happened in 1991 for which reason we consider this the year of our establishment, rather than 1980, when De Tegel BV actually started. 9
Meanwhile de Tegel BV has become an established name, being, besides a distributor in The Netherlands, also active on the Belgian market, in France, Germany, the UK, Denmark, Norway and even in Russia. Our distribution is continually expanding and so, before long, our products will be sold in the Middle East. Our vision ‘Passion for hand-made beauty’ represents our leitmotiv; we search the globe for hand-made and exclusive tile products, enabling our dealers stand out from the rest in the market. Our mission We ‘go the extra mile’ for our customers. Besides continuous investments in Research & Development, our professional team provides our dealers with advice and practical support. cement tiles Cement tiles have a natural matt appearance. Used in bathrooms, kitchens, entrance halls, conservatories, living rooms ..... in short cement tiles will fit anywhere. In our designs we combine contemporary styles with traditional techniques. The first cement tiles appeared in around 1850 in Belgium and France, initially as an alternative for the much more expensive porcelain tiles. In the beginning, mostly uni-coloured tiles were made, but during the first blooming period from 1900 to 1930, the application of Art Deco and Jugendstil patterns began. These typical images can still be found in Belgian and French mansions and public buildings. Because of the sustainability and relatively straightforward production methods, the tiles were also used in the former colonies. As a result, cement tiles are now spread worldwide. They can be found in North Africa, South Africa, South America, North America, Asia and Australia. The decorations in the different parts of the world were adjusted to the local taste, but the production process remained virtually similar.

The quality of a cement tiles is determined by a number of factors; • The quality of the pigments; chemical pigments may fade after a while, that’s why De Tegel BV only works with oxides and mineral pigments, which prevent discolouring. •T he quality of the cement, cement comes in many types, but De Tegel BV only works with the best quality Portland cement. •T he power of the hydraulic press, this must be at least 30 bar. The machines that make our tiles use 30 bar. •T he moulds should be replaced frequently to prevent line fuzziness. •T he pigment layer should be 3 to 4 millimetres thick to guarantee proper wear resistance. •T he tile should ‘mature’ for 3 to 4 weeks, if less, the tile will remain brittle and, therefore, much more sensitive to breaking and staining. •O nce the tile has been laid, sufficient impregnation must take place as well as regular maintenance, using preservatives. Since all tiles are hand-made, it is possible that slight differences in colour or size occur, but that is also the charm of cement tiles. Unfortunately, both the craftsmanship and cement tiles went out of fashion and after World War II they were replaced by other more modern solutions. The second blooming period of the early 1980’s is still ongoing.

production process
cement tiles
The production process is actually up-side down. The pattern mould is placed in the master mould. The compartments are filled with a liquid pigment mix of marble dust and fine sand. Then, the rest of the mould is filled, first with fine cement sand, then with courses cement sand. Finally, the tile is compressed by a hydraulic press with a pressure force of at least 30 bar. Creating a tile takes between 3 to 5 minutes, depending on the complexity of the pattern. After the tile is pressed, it is placed in a water bath for 24 hours so that the cement crystals can develop. Then, the tiles are ‘matured’ in a room with a high humidity so that the cement crystals can harden further.

The Autumn is a reproduction of an antique art deco tile. A young couple in love came to us with three old tiles they found at a flea market. They wanted to get married on a floor of these tiles. Within eight weeks! We put everything aside to make this happen, and two days before the wedding day, the floor was done. Since then, it has been one of our most successful tiles.

pip studio Anke van der Endt, a graduate of the Design Academy Eindhoven, established the Dutch brand Pip in 2006. The company specialises in the design and development of lifestyle products. The brand experience is based on Pip’s experiences. Each year’s products revolve around a new event that has inspired Pip, which in turn serves as the theme for the collections. These experiences can be read on the website (www.pipstudio.com). Pip is the alter ego of the brand’s founder. Pip appeals to a very large target group. Pip’s niece, for example, uses a Pip school diary, while her grandma pours tea out of a Pip teapot and Pip herself sleeps in Pip pyjamas. Pip Studio products are now available in more than 35 countries at better department stores and a wonderful range of retailers. The success is based on the studio’s strong design sensibility, which also clearly appeals to an international audience. All of the professional partners with whom Pip works for production, distribution, marketing and sales also contribute to the brand’s success.

The designs are characterised by rich and layered designs, with a recognisable colour palette. Detailing is as important as quality. zelliges On one of our endless quests for artisanal hand-made products, we discovered beautiful hand-made zellige tiles. ‘Zellige’ is the Arabic word for ‘baked tile’. The production process is 600 years old and the craftsmanship has hardly changed to date. The best known characteristics of the zellige tiles are the beautiful colour nuances and the hand-cut character. Zellige tiles are used throughout the Middle East, in palaces, mansions, hammams and nowadays also in chic hotels and trendy restaurants. Also the demand for zellige tiles in Europe rapidly grows. The old craftsmanship’s techniques do have a flip side; they are entirely outdated. Work is being done under miserable conditions. Twelve hour shifts are no exception and children learn the trade at a very young age in order to provide a meagre contribution to the family’s income, which is usually supposed to feed many. Toxic glazes are used and mixed manually. The traditional clay ovens are to be used only at night, because the smoke is so black and toxic that it affects the health of people in the surrounding areas. Entrepreneurial pioneers – typically Dutch – saw opportunities in zellige tiles, but not this way. On the one hand, we realised that the old craftsmanship should be preserved, but the zellige tiles should be manufactured using today’s technical know-how. Together with our local partner we developed a plan. We would build a plant in which all processes that form an important part of the tile (such as clay composition), but do not affect the ‘look’ and the ‘feel’, would be industrialised. Yet all processes that do determine the ‘look’ and ‘feel’ would be kept traditional, so the original characteristics of the zellige tiles would be preserved. We submitted this plan to the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Development Aid. Since this plan was so innovative and would help to develop the region and preserve the old craftsmanship, we were granted a substantial subsidy for the establishment of the plant.

Meanwhile, the plant is fully operational. As far as we know, we are the only plant in the Middle East manufacturing zellige tiles this way. We work with the best imported machinery money can buy. Our ovens are gas fired, whereby there is hardly any emission of harmful gases. Our glaze commodities are imported from Europe and are completely safe, meeting the highest standards. We work with European, renowned chemists, who develop the recipes of our own colours and train labourers locally in preparing and applying the glaze. In addition, we cooperate with local technical universities in order to further improve our production techniques and processes and also reduce waste. Meanwhile, we’ve got as far as being able to reuse 95% of the waste material. We employ both men and women, which is highly unusual in this industry. All employees get 150% above the minimum wage, they work in a clean environment, are insured, build a pension and can use medical services – if necessary – free of charge. The employees cannot work any longer than 10 hours a day, overtime will be paid. The labourers are trained by European trainers, all receive a thirteenth month and work half days during Ramadan. In August, each employee receives a sheep for the sacrificial feast. On Fridays, there is a joint lunch before the Midday prayers. Apart from the fact that the community around the plant prospers, we can truly say that we produce ecologically defensible and sustainable zellige tiles, producing a minimum of waste. zelliges | De Tegel bv

important tips Important suggestions on laying and maintaining cement tiles; • Always glue to a bone-dry subfloor. • Never use anthracite colour grout. • Use glues and grouts suitable for natural stone. De tegel bv uses kiesel products. • Cleansing can only be done several days after grouting. Take into account that cement tiles are not very resistant to acids like vinegar, tea, chlorine etc. Remove such fluids immediately! • Stay loyal to one brand: akemi for treating and maintaining the cement tiles. Lithofin also has suitable products for treating and aftercare of cement tiles floors; information can be obtained at de Tegel bv. • Untreated floors: in case you have not finished the floor job, always cover the floor with linen cloth and never use plastic, panels or cardboard. • Underfloor heating: cement tiles can easily be placed on top of floor heating. Make sure to use flexible glue and grout. Prevent great temperature fluctuations during laying and during the weeks after. Follow the general instructions for floor heating and no problems will occur. • Placing outside: cement tiles can be used in open patios and entrance halls. We discourage placement in direct sunlight because then the tiles may discolour. • Public spaces: in case of using cement tiles in public spaces such as restaurants, offices, shops… we advise the maintenance of the floor by using a cleaning machine. • Sawing: always use a water saw. The top layer of the cement tiles consists of marble and granite. • Shower floor: we strongly discourage using cement tiles in a walk-in shower because of scale, which cannot be removed from cement tiles.

Lay and maintenance instructions; In order to be able to enjoy your floor for many years, it’s important that the cement tiles are laid, finalised and maintained according to certain requirements. De Tegel bv’s advice is to use the Akemi and Kiesel brand. Lirhofin is also a good brand for treating and maintaining your cement tiles. It is important though that you remain loyal to one brand; this applies for all treatment and maintenance products.
