TEN WORDS CAN GET RESULTS. By. CJ Eason, The Job Doctor, JobFairGiant.com Okay! Back to this resume debacle. Honestly, I have read thousands of resumes; the average is not written well,

the

format

does

not

compliment

their

experience, grammar and punctuation are a big issue, and under-explained job descriptions plague most resumes. I would be more than happy to accept a 10All job seekers struggle with writing a winning resume to grab the attention of hiring employers. What to say? What not to say? What is relevant information about your jobs? It is never easy, especially when all career coaching experts have a different viewpoint on hiring, and it is just a confusing mess of information to regular people just trying to get hired. I have understood complete for years; my mission has been to simplify the job search process for job seekers – determined to make sense of the job requirements and the complexity of group interviews is beyond frustrating in my mindset. However, I understand that hiring the wrong employee can cost a company millions of dollars, and job seekers have to be willing and able to introduce their skills in the most qualifying format to appear as the best candidate.

WORD RESUME from a potential candidate; assuming you used ten perfectly selected words to explain your skills and experience; that might save me two minutes of browsing the wrong resumes. Nothing is more frustrating to a recruiter than receiving a resume for a General Labor position only to read the entire resume to discover the candidate is a mechanical engineer – well, I will just be donuts. JobFairGiant.com has launched a challenge for all job seekers to announce their Career Field, Experience, and Skills using ten words. The purpose is to make a straightforward introduction to hiring companies; if you do not know who you are as a candidate, how can you apply for the right jobs. For years, I have told job seekers to tailor their resumes to the company's needs, rewrite their resume based on the job description requirements – for the sake of being positive in this sentence. I will assume that writer's block is the reason why my suggestion is ignored. The point is to give recruiters ten powerful words and spark the attention of hiring recruiters.

Boost Years Of Experience. Your work experience can be a benefit for younger candidates and a downside for older workers. Be sure if you have several years of experience to provide the required number of years to help prevent age discrimination. Frequently, many employers assume overqualified candidates want more money or have outdated skillsets when in actuality, many current job seekers have retrained, and retirees have returned to the workforce seeking supplemental income. WHO WE ARE WHAT IS AN ESTATE SALE? An estate sale is a sale of the entire contents of a home, and sometimes an entire lifetime of memories. Aaron's Estate Sales works with the family and makes the home and its contents desirable to buyers by cleaning, staging, researching, and pricing items. We then advertise and host a multi-day sale in the client’s home.

WHAT WE DO: Our team travels to the client’s home and sets up the house, staging the contents, pricing the items, and then running the entire estate sale from start to finish. Every home and every client are different, making every week an adventure. Learn about antique glass one week and professional tools the next. Stage a million-dollar home on Monday, and a barn full of off-road vehicles Wednesday. At Aaron’s Estate Sales, you will never be bored! We are one of the largest estate sale companies in the Midwest and are continuing to expand. There is plenty of room for growth and long-term career paths within our organization.

FACE TO FACE INTERVIEW ADVICE GUIDE Your interviewers are looking to appoint someone who genuinely wants to join their company, who shows enthusiasm for the role, is committed to working in their offices, is well presented, and demonstrates excellent interpersonal and communication skills. An interview is a two-way communication process. It is your opportunity to find out more about the position and it’s an opportunity for the interviewers to assess whether you have the relevant skills and experience required. The interviewers will be looking for someone with confidence and character, who is a team player and will fit in within their company. They will be able to provide more information about the role and the company during the interview. We advise you prepare answers to commonly asked questions so you can respond confidently and concisely. You may be asked why you are seeking alternative employment, more about your current skills, workload and experience, your long term plans and what you can offer the company. We also recommend you prepare some questions to ask the interviewers e.g. what will my day look like? What is the team atmosphere like? You may find it beneficial to take a pen and pad so you can take notes during the interview if appropriate. We have created this advice guide to give you as much help and guidance to ensure your face to face interview goes smoothly.

KEY SECTIONS 1. Preparation 2. Questions to ask the interviewer 3. Typical questions you may be asked 4. Interview dos and don’ts

1. PREPARATION Preparation is the first essential step towards a successful interview. It’s normal to feel nervous because you want to do your best but if you prepare and practice you can get the better of your nerves and give yourself the best chance of getting the job. The interviewers will expect you to have visited the company website beforehand and have a brief understanding of what the company does so it is important to be prepared.

SIMPLE BUT REGULARLY FORGOTTEN POINTS

Make sure you know the exact location, time and date of the interview and the interviewer’s full name.

Always wear smart business clothes. Don’t dress casually, even if you know the company policy is relaxed.

Investigate specific, relevant facts about the company; where are their offices? What products and services do they offer? You should also research the company history and growth potential.

Refresh your memory about your current or former employment; what tasks did you do? What projects did you work on? What results did you achieve? You will be expected to be able to talk about this. Think about what questions you want to ask the interviewers. Remember an interview is a two-way process, you should try to determine if the company will be a good fit for you and will provide the opportunity for growth and development.

2. QUESTIONS TO ASK THE INTERVIEWER Here is a list of potential questions you could ask the interviewer. The answers to these questions should help you qualify whether or not the role is going to be a good fit for you. • What exactly will the role involve? • What does a typical day look like? • Why is the position available?

• What is the broad culture of the company? • What induction and training do you offer? • What sort of people have done well in this sort of role? • Are there advanced training programmes available? • What are the company’s key objectives for the next 3 years? • What are your best-selling products or services? • Is there room for progression within the company? • What are the main challenges currently facing the company? • Could you describe how this role relates to the overall structure of the company? • How will my performance be measured?

3. TYPICAL QUESTIONS YOU MAY BE ASKED By preparing answers to typical interview questions you will feel more confident, and be able to deliver prompt and precise responses. There is nothing worse than being asked a question in an interview and not having a clue what to say. Here are some typical questions you may be asked in an interview, think about the answers you could give that relate to the requirements of the job specification.

COMPANY-BASED QUESTIONS • What do you know about our company? • What interests you about our company’s products/services? • Why would you like to work for us? • What attracted you to this particular position? • What qualities do you think you could bring to our business?

CAREER-BASED QUESTIONS • Why did you choose a career in [……………]? • What qualifications do you possess? • What were your responsibilities in your last role? • Why are you looking to leave your current job/why did you leave your last job?

• What have you learned from the previous jobs you have had? • Is there any training you are looking to undertake in the near future? • How many sick days have you taken in the past year? • Are you willing to be flexible in your work hours? • How good are you at prioritising your workload? • Where do you see yourself in 5 years? • What are your salary requirements?

COMPETENCY-BASED QUESTIONS • Tell us about the biggest change that you have had to deal with. How did you cope with it? • Describe a situation where you had to explain something complex to a colleague or a client. Which problems did you encounter and how did you deal with them? • Tell us about your biggest failure. How did you recover and what have you learnt from that incident? • Describe a situation in which you were a member of team. What did you do to positively contribute to it? • What are your main strengths and weaknesses? • What have you done in your career that shows initiative?

PERSONALITY-BASED QUESTIONS • What are your hobbies? • How would you describe yourself in three words? • Is it easy for you to get to our office? • How do you evaluate success? • Are you willing to relocate? • What style of management do you prefer? • What kind of job are you looking for? • Do you have any questions?

4. INTERVIEW DOS AND DON’TS Throughout the interview the interviewers will be assessing your strengths and weaknesses as well as your attitude, ability, skills and personality. DO arrive several minutes early. Late arrival for a job interview is never excusable. If you are delayed, try to let someone know beforehand. DO dress smartly. DO shake hands firmly at the beginning and end of the interview. DO wait until offered a chair before sitting. Sit upright, look alert and interested at all times. Be a good listener as well as a good talker. Smile. DO engage the interviewer using strong and confident eye-contact. DO try to gather a full understanding of the position and duties early in the interview, so you can effectively relate your appropriate background and skills. DO ensure your strengths are presented to the interviewer in a factual and sincere manner. Your objective is to sell yourself and make the interviewer aware of the potential benefits you can bring. DO communicate your determination to get the job at all times. It’s better to be in a position where you can choose from a number of jobs, rather than only one. DO remember to ask the interviewer some questions at the end to show you are interested and to find out everything you need to know about the role and the company. DO thank the interviewer for their time at the end. DO ask for a glass of water at the start of the interview. Sipping on water may help calm your nerves and will also give you time to think if you are struggling on a question. DON’T make negative remarks about your present or former employers or colleagues. DON’T over-talk. If the interviewer steers conversation towards politics or economics, it is usually best to respond in reserved, non-committed fashion. DON’T ask about salary, holidays or bonuses at the initial interview, but be aware of your market value and be prepared to specify your required salary or range. DON’T stray away from the question.

WRITING A GOOD RESUME The most basic principle of good resume formatting and design? Keep it simple. Use a basic but modern font, like Helvetica, Arial, or Century Gothic. Make your resume easy on hiring managers’ eyes by using a font size between 10 and 12 and leaving a healthy amount of white space on the page. You can use a different font or typeface for your name, your resume headers, and the companies for which you’ve worked, but keep it simple and keep it consistent. No matter what resume format you choose, your main focus here should be on readability for the hiring manager.

Ditch the Resume Objective Statement “THE ONLY OCCASION WHEN AN OBJECTIVE SECTION MAKES SENSE IS WHEN YOU’RE MAKING A HUGE CAREER CHANGE AND NEED TO EXPLAIN FROM THE GET-GO WHY YOUR EXPERIENCE DOESN’T MATCH UP WITH THE POSITION YOU’RE APPLYING TO.”

3

CAREER FAIRS WORK… FOR CANDIDATES Don’t Be Shy. This is your chance to shine. As you approach each employer table, be friendly, be confident, and be prepared with something to say. Introduce yourself with a smile, eye contact, and a brief, firm handshake. Often, the recruiter will take the lead and ask you questions, but you should also have your elevator pitch ready—a 30-second soundbite of what you want the company to know about you. (Here’s how to craft one if you’re unsure.) To really use your time wisely, you should be able to concisely convey why you’re interested in the particular company and how your skills or qualifications suit the position. But at the same time—don’t go too fast! Job seekers have a tendency to speak quickly, which comes across as rushed or nervous. You want to speak slowly and with interest. Follow-up is important; do not drop off your resume and forget to follow up. Seriously, that is a waste of a good career fair.

“An educated employee earns more money. EARNING A CERTIFICATION CAN HELP YOU ENTER OR ADVANCE IN MANY CAREERS. Why Earn a Professional Certification? While certification isn’t required in all career fields, it’s a good idea. If you have the opportunity to earn a professional certification, doing so usually pays off. People with years of experience need to update their skills to remain an asset to their company. People in career transition should consider a career certification to boost their chances of getting hired. The following are just a few of the benefits of earning a professional certification. • • • • •

More employment and career advancement opportunities Competitive advantage over competitors that are not certified Higher pay Tuition reimbursement for continuing education Lower liability. If your competency is ever questioned, a certificate will show you are a qualified professional in your industry.

HOW TO GET A GOOD JOB WITH NO EXPERIENCE How To Get A Good Job With No Experience. Boost Your Transferable Skills If you are changing careers, you can use your previous work experience to show your potential to succeed in this new role. What are transferable skills employers desire? If you worked in a customer service occupation, a transferable skill could be your resilience. In a busy coffee shop in New York City, it might be common for a customer to say “hurry up with my order,” and being shorttempered and belligerent in your response is not acceptable. It takes resilience to remain pleasant and calm in the moment and for the rest of your shift. A standard interview question is, “Tell me about a situation when you had to use resilience?” First off, the definition alone can cause a candidate to stumble, but be prepared to explain this transferrable skill. A role dedicated to helping the public can position you well to land any job if you have this transferable skill. Another example: If you’ve worked as a receptionist, you likely have good active listening skills. Active listening and communications skills typically go hand in hand, and these skills can be transferable to many different roles. More Read Forbes.com

Interview Tips Before the Interview Be Prepared Know your own information on your resume, research and know the field, the organization, and read the job description thoroughly. Practice interview questions by writing out the answers and rehearsing by yourself or with friends. Sign up for a mock interview appointment at Career Services by calling 413-545-2224 or stopping by 511 Goodell. Present yourself professionally Dress conservatively with muted colors and moderate styles, and dress somewhat better than what may be expected at that workplace. For most interviews, a suit is recommended. In any case it is always better to be overdressed than underdressed. Bring a copy of your resume, a list of references, perhaps an unofficial transcript and a list of questions for employers (see below). Place all documents in a portfolio with a pen. Turn off your cell phone. Arrive early Arrive 5-15 minutes early - do not keep the interviewer waiting. Know the directions to the interview and plan your commute with time to spare. Call to reschedule if you have an emergency or get sick. Remember… An interviewer’s most common reason for hiring someone? – “I liked him/her.”

Your Questions for the Employer Research the company. Prepare a list of at least five to seven questions to ask the interviewer, and then ask three at most. At the end of any interview make sure you know what the next steps are in the application process.

           

Questions to Ask What are the qualifications of individuals who have excelled in this position or a similar position? What type of person are you seeking? Can I progress at my own pace or is there a structured training program? What would a normal working day be like? How would you describe your company culture? Can I expect to be supervised, or will you expect me to work independently? What will be the measurements of my success in this position? Does the company provide any professional development or educational benefits? Questions Not to Ask What does this company do? (Do your research ahead of time!) If I get this job when can I take time off for vacation? (Wait until you get the offer to mention prior commitments) Can I change my schedule if I get the job? (If you need to figure out the logistics of getting to work don’t mention it now…) Did I get the job? (Don’t be impatient. They’ll let you know)

Answering Questions In an interview you are asked to share details of your experiences on the premise that past behavior (performance) predicts future behavior (performance). Past examples may come from work experience, internships, academic experiences, extra-curricular activities or volunteer work.

Give details. Tell SHORT stories. An interview is, ideally, a conversation between a business (you, offering your labor) and another business (the employer, offering to pay for your labor). It’s not an interrogation. Don’t monologue! Don’t give just one word answers! Make it a conversation, as much as possible.

Interviewer asks: Why should I hire you? Stress what you have to offer the employer, not how nice it would be to work there or what you want from the employer. Identify at least three specific reasons you are a good fit by speaking to the skills, experiences and credentials that are unique to you. Whether this question is actually asked or not, you want to make sure that the employer knows those three reasons they should hire you before the interview is over. Interviewer asks: Tell me about yourself. Remember, this is a job interview, not a psychological or personal interview. The interviewer is interested in the information about you that relates to your qualifications for employment, such as education, work experiences and extracurricular activities. Interviewer asks: What do you expect to be doing five years from now? The interviewer is looking for evidence of career goals and ambitions rather than minutely specific descriptions. The interviewer wants to see your thought process and the criteria that are important to you. The interviewer is not looking for information about your personal life. Interviewer asks: What is your greatest strength and weakness? Work-related answers only, please. Whatever your weakness, you must continue on to explain how you have already been repairing this trait within a work context. Use specific examples. Interviewer asks: Tell me about the worst boss you have ever had. Warning! Trick question! Do not launch yourself into righteous wrath! Do not go on and on about how awful someone else was, and certainly do not name names. The interviewer is looking for a professional, calm attitude and is checking to make sure you can handle stress. Speak to how you coped and what you did to get your work done rather than focusing on the shortcomings of your ex-manager.

Assessment questions What are your long-range and short-range goals and objectives and how are you preparing yourself to meet them? What rewards are the most important to you in your chosen occupation? How would you describe yourself? Attitude questions What qualifications do you have that make you think you will be successful in this field? What do you think it takes to be successful in our organization? In what ways can you contribute to our organization? Describe the relationship that should exist between a supervisor and employee. What factors are most important to you in your job? Questions about your education Describe your most rewarding college experience. Why did you select your college or university? What motivation led you to choose your major/field? What college subjects did you enjoy least? Why? If you could, how would you have planned your academic study differently? Why? Questions about your knowledge of employer Why are you interested in working for us? What do you know about our organization? Do you prefer a small, medium, or large organization? What criteria are you using to evaluate the organization for which you want to work? Do you have a geographical preference? Why? Behavioral questions Tell me about a time when you had to organize a project under tight time frames. How did it turn out? Give me an example of when you had to deal with an irate customer/client. How did you handle it? Describe the last time you used teamwork to solve a problem. What did you do and what was the outcome?

Phone and Skype Interviews Phone interviews are often the first interview you might have with an employer. It is therefore important to make sure that your voice mail is appropriate and professional. When a phone interview is scheduled, have the employer call you on a land line where there will be no background noise. If it has to be to your cell phone, make sure it is charged and you are in a quiet area with no background noise. Treat the phone interview as you would an in-person interview. Smile, sit up straight or walk around - your body posture greatly influences your tone of voice. Have your resume and the job ad in front of you for reference. Make sure you send a thank you just as you would following an in-person interview.

Be sure to treat a Skype interview as an in-person interview. Dress up (your bottom half, too) and have your resume/questions for the employer/job announcement there in front of you. But further, make sure your computer is charged/or plugged in, and that the background that will appear behind you is bland or blank. And yes, you still need to send a thank you afterwards.

Manners and Etiquette Turn your cell phone off before going into the interview. Be friendly to everyone you see! Receptionists are often asked their impression of you. Stand when people come into the room or are being introduced to you. Handshakes: gender does not change who offers the handshake or how it is done; give the pressure you receive; thumb web to thumb web; stand to shake even if they don’t; hold objects (business cards, portfolio, coat over the arm) on your left side to keep the right hand free.  Sit up straight and look people in the eye. Do not slouch or cross your legs.  If your interview includes either lunch or dinner, read up on table etiquette before you go. Remember that this meal is not about food – you are still being interviewed, in fact you are the entertainment. Order from the mid-price range on the menu, something easy to eat and not messy. Do not order alcohol, no matter what your age. Do not speak with your mouth full. The person inviting you is expected to pay. Remember to thank them for the meal.    

Do

 Smile as frequently as possible (especially when you are asked a question and respond to the person who has asked the question) but don’t over do it!  Maintain good eye contact. If there’s more than one interviewer look from person to person.  Be articulate and listen carefully to each question before giving your answer.  It is okay to take your time answering questions and/or clarifying questions if you need to.  Keep calm and don’t panic!

Don’t

 Crossing your arms: makes you look defensive.  Sit on the edge of your seat.  Mess with your face or play with your jewelry or hair.  Rock on the seat.  Interrupt when being asked a question.  Give one word answers (unless the answer dictates a one word answer!)

Digital Dirt Maybe it doesn’t seem quite fair that an employer will Google you or check out your Facebook profile. But justice or not, you need to be prepared for at least a cursory search. Google your own name and see what comes up – make sure that everything about you during this job search time is “grandmother approved”. Conversely, you should do some digging of your own. Google every person you know who will be interviewing you. Don’t just look at the company’s website, search for professional and news articles about the company that are free of the company’s bias. Don’t go in blind, but be judicious in your use of your factfinding missions.

Handling Inappropriate Questions Questions regarding your marital status, age, race, religious preference, children, sexual orientation or other issues are not always illegal but definitely inappropriate or unethical because they are unrelated to the job qualifications. Handling these questions can pose a personal dilemma as you decide how to respond. There are no strict guidelines to follow in dealing with these questions and many times they are asked by interviewers who are unaware that the questions are inappropriate. However, if you feel uncomfortable about a question ask yourself the following questions:    

Do I really want this job? How badly do I want this job? Do I really want to work for an organization that asks inappropriate questions? Does the interviewer realize that this question is inappropriate?

Based on your responses to some of these questions you may wish to:  End the interview.  Ask the interviewer what relevance the question has to the position or why the question is being asked (the good etiquette favorite).  Refuse to answer the question.  Answer the question with or without regret. Keep in mind, the way you handle this situation says a lot about your professionalism and maturity. Avoid being rude and argumentative while remaining positive, polite and assertive.

Always Remember to Write Thank You Notes

Get the business cards or contact information of everyone that you meet at the interview, as this will be helpful in writing thank you emails or letters. No more than 12 hours after your interview be sure to email thank you notes to anyone you interviewed with. Make sure to express your sincere appreciation, reemphasize your strongest qualifications and reiterate your interest in the position.

Dear Ms. Romano: I want to thank you for taking the time to interview me yesterday for the Biological Wildlife Aide position. I enjoyed meeting you and learning more about the organization. My enthusiasm for the position and my interest in working for the Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge were strengthened as a result of the interview. I think my education in Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation and internship fit nicely with the job requirements, and I am sure that I could make a significant contribution to the organization over time. I want to reiterate my strong interest in the position and in working with you and your staff. You provide the kind of opportunity I seek. Please feel free to contact me at 413-555-4321 or anatures@student.umass.edu if I can provide you with any additional information. Again, thank you for the interview and your consideration. Sincerely, Andy Natures

quick tips Interviewing Basics

Step 1: Before The Interview

Research the employer During the interview you may be asked what information you know about the employer. Therefore, prior to the interview, it’s important to gather as much relevant information about the employer as you can. The more you know, the more confident you are likely to feel. Helpful information includes: the company’s mission & vision, industry trends, recent news stories involving the employer, their clients and/or customer base, and company competitors. You also need to be able to answer the question “Why are you interested in working for us?”

Prepare for the "Tell me about yourself” question This question is an opportunity to describe your qualifications and career aspirations, not your love for Netflix and ramen. Your answer should consist of a 2-3 minute overview of your professional and academic experiences and accomplishments. You should highlight the things that are most relevant to the job/internship. This could include: coursework, projects, internships, research, on-campus jobs, and service/leadership opportunities.

Practice interview responses It’s important to be prepared for the types of interview questions that an employer will ask. A majority of the questions you will be asked during your interview may be behavioral interview questions. Behavioral interview questions evaluate your past experiences to give the employer a sense of how you might perform in the future. These questions should be answered by crafting specific stories or examples using the STAR format (see below). Each answer should be 2-3 minutes long and highlight your role in the story. A list of commonly asked behavioral interview questions can be found on the last page of the guide. Also, review the experiences, projects, and activities on your resume. Know what you’ve done in each opportunity and be able to explain it using the STAR format.

Prep yourself for the day-of events You should arrive 10-15 minutes before the interview. Be sure to dress appropriately—typically this means business professional or business casual. If you are unsure of what to wear, ask your career consultant or the recruiter you’ve been working with throughout the process. Bring extra copies of your resume as well as your portfolio or any work samples that are relevant. You should also bring a list of questions you plan to ask the interviewer.

quick tips Interview Basics (cont.)

Step 2: During The Interview

Be confident and positive Remember, everyone you meet that day is an “interviewer.” Be courteous and cheerful to everyone you interact with. Be sure to greet your interviewer with a firm handshake and a positive attitude. Try to relax, be yourself, and think of the interview as a conversation between you and the interviewer.

Respond to questions with strong answers A strong answer should include a specific example or story that you use to showcase your skills and qualifications. Be sure to share the result of your story or solution to the specific problem. The best way to organize your answer is using the STAR format (see previous page).

Ask thoughtful questions Prepare a list of 5-8, well-researched questions to ask the interviewer at the conclusion of each interview. Your questions should reflect the amount of research you have done on the employer. A list of sample questions can be found on the last page of the guide.

Step 3: After The Interview

Evaluate your performance Each interview should be a learning experience. Write down a everything you think you handled right and wrong, so you can adjust your responses for the next interview. Also, make a note of any information you may need to include in your than you notes

Send thank you notes/emails It’s important to follow up after your interview. Send each interviewer a personalized thank you note—email format is common practice. In the note, emphasize your qualifications and skillset in relation to the position. Try to mention something you and the person talked about that made this a memorable or enjoyable experience in order to personalize the letter. Send separate thank you notes to each individual you interviewed with, and make sure they are different from one another.

Interview and Professional Attire Tips for Success The Center for Career & Leadership Development offers in-person mock interviews by appointment. Students should wear professional attire to in-person mock interviews. Need a professional outfit? Shop our Professional Clothing Closet!

WHAT ARE ORGANIZATIONS LOOKING FOR WHEN THEY INTERVIEW YOU?  When answering interview questions, remember that organizations want to know two things:  

Are you a good fit for the program/organization? Do you have the skills, abilities, and experience to do the job/complete the program?

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU GET THE CALL FOR AN INTERVIEW , ASK THESE QUESTIONS :  How long will the interview be? Will there be multiple interviews with different people?  How many people will I meet with that day?  Will other candidates be interviewing that day as well?  Will the interview be in-person or over the phone or via Skype?  What is the dress code? (for in-person interviews) SCHOLARSHIP , LEADERSHIP , GRAD SCHOOL INTERVIEWS  Treat these just as you would a professional job interview. Even if you’re not going into a business field, professional attire is expected of those entering a leadership role or a professional career, so that means you! And just like in a job interview, you would prepare to talk about your interest in the program and how your skills and experiences align with the program. TYPES OF INTERVIEWS  SCREENING INTERVIEWS : Initial interview to see if you would go to the next round of interviews.  PHONE /VIDEO INTERVIEWS : Interview conducted over the phone or computer. Sometimes used as a screening tool but more organizations use this method for final interviews, particularly for internships, to save on travel costs.  PANEL INTERVIEWS : In this situation, several people interview you at once.  GROUP INTERVIEW : You and the other candidates are interviewed at the same time. In this situation, you want to find a good balance between speaking up and also allowing others to talk and share their ideas as well.  BEHAVIOR /SITUATIONAL/CASE INTERVIEWS : In a second interview, the interviewer will use these types of questions to determine whether or not you are the right fit for the job. Thorough answers will tell the interviewer about your past behavior and will be used to predict future behavior. The interviewer will ask you to consider situations or specific cases in order to see how you would behave in a real or hypothetical situation.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK Always research the company/organization and opportunity before the interview. Be able to describe how your skills and experiences match the organization and opportunity. Use the organization’s website, Handshake description, LinkedIn, news articles, and other resources to conduct your research. Be able to answer this question: Why do you want to work in this field/complete this program? Create a list of questions you want to ask during the interview. Ask about company culture, job duties, expectations, projects, and any other aspect that will help you make a better decision about accepting or not accepting the job.

KNOW YOURSELF…SO YOU CAN ANSWER ANY INTERVIEW QUESTION Can you speak to each bullet point and experienced listed on your resume? Anything on your resume could become an interview question. What have been your most significant accomplishments? Challenges? Conflicts? Failures? Successes? Know them and be able to talk about what you have learned from them. These situations can help you answer a variety of behavior based questions. Technique for Success – The STAR Method. Use the STAR method for answering behavioral or other questions that require you to draw from past experiences. State the (S)ituation and the (T)ask you needed to complete. Describe the (A)ction and the (R)esult. Be brief in your description. Emphasize the results or what you learned and how it connects to the opportunity you want.

Prepare to answer these questions (Be specific – always back up your answer with an example from experience). Tell me about yourself Why should we choose you? What is your biggest strength? Tell me about a time you failed. Why do you want to go into this field? What is your biggest weakness?

PREPARE YOUR ELEVATOR PITCH/INTRODUCTION  Be ready for the “Tell me about yourself” question. The organization wants to know about your experiences and how they fit with the opportunity. It’s more than an autobiography. Tell them what you value and why the opportunity matters to you.  Focus more on the professional than the personal. Do not spend time repeating information that is on your resume.  Smile, show your personality. Rather than memorize a speech, know the key items you want to discuss in your introduction. You want to sound natural and relaxed.

PREPARE QUESTIONS TO ASK At job interviews you are evaluated partly on your answers to the interviewer’s questions, and partly by the questions you ask and don't ask. Asking about salary and benefits sends one message; asking about the guts of the job, its challenges and performance expectations, sends another. “The more performance-related your questions, the better.” By asking questions, you show that you are interested. Use the 4 C’s to Create your list of questions. 1. Connect: You want to connect with the interviewer by asking a question like; “What do you like about working at this company?” 2. Culture: You want to find out what it is really like to be a part of the organization and what the expectations are. You would ask a questions like; “What makes someone successful or unsuccessful in this position?” 3. Challenges: Ask them a question like; “What are some challenges that a new hire might expect?” This will give you a chance to resale your qualifications and experience. 4. Close: All ways tell them how excited you are about the opportunity. Always ask what the next step in the process is. You should ask when and if it is okay to contact them after that time has elapsed.

WHAT NOT TO TALK ABOUT DURING AN INTERVIEW Did you know that there are questions an employer should never ask during an interview? An employer should not ask you about your marital status/family status, citizenship status, disabilities, age, and religion. So that means, you shouldn’t bring it up either because you never know how the interviewer might let it play into their decision. For instance, that you are planning to start a family soon, the employer’s bias could impact their decision to hire you even when you are the most qualified. In addition, getting too personal in an interview takes away from the professional purpose of the conversation.

MAKING THE BEST IMPRESSION  Turn your cell phone off before the interview and put it away so that you are not distracted.  Dress professionally for full-time, internship, campus opportunity, and grad school interviews. Even for casual work environments, you want to show that you can be professional. For part-time jobs, it is still important to look your best during the interview.  Know where you are interviewing so that you arrive on time. Show up at least 15 minutes early.  When you meet someone, smile and offer a firm handshake.  Use good eye contact.  Maintain good posture, but lean in slightly to show interest in what your interviewer is saying.  Focus on the professional. It’s ok to share some personal information such as a hobby (if it is relevant to the conversation), but be careful about disclosing too much personal information during your interview.  Avoid filler words such as “like,” “um/uh,” “stuff,” “kind of,” “I mean,” etc. If you are prepared with what you want to say, you are less likely to look for these placeholders in your conversation.  Do not ask about salary during the interview. You should ask salary questions during the application process or once you receive an offer. By doing your research ahead of time, you should have an idea of what the salary is so that you can use the interview to discuss your true interest in the position. o Some employers will ask you about your salary requirements. Use resources such as salary.com to look up salary information for the job you want within your zip code. When asked, offer a range rather than an exact number so that you seem flexible.

WHAT TO BRING   

Padfolio. Use the legal pad to have a list of questions. Bring extra copies of your resume. If interviewing off campus, have directions to the location and the phone number of the person who is interviewing you. If interviewing for several hours, bring a professional bag and stock it with water and other items you might need that day.

AFTER THE INTERVIEW  Send a thank you email or note to the interviewer. This is your first chance to follow-up. An additional follow-up via phone or email would be appropriate 1 or 2 weeks later, depending on when they told you they would contact you.

DRESS FOR SUCCESS: WHAT TO WEAR IN PROFESSIONAL SETTINGS You never have a second chance to make a first impression. For career fairs and professional interviews, you want to wear professional attire. On a basic level, professional attire is much different than what we might wear to class or even to work every day. It’s a step up from khakis and a polo but not as formal as a tuxedo. Once hired, you might find that business casual is appropriate for most days but in an interview setting, you want to show that you are ready for leadership roles and greater responsibility in the future. Check out The Professional Closet in the CCLD on the Macon and Cochran campuses for inexpensive professional options. Our staff can also help you identify appropriate items for your interview.  

 

When choosing an interview outfit, ask yourself: Is it appropriate for working in a professional environment? Items that WORK: o Pants (not jeans - khakis are ok but something in a more professional fabric and color works best) o Button-down shirt with a tie, blazer, and slacks. White or light blue are popular colors. o Blazer or tailored cardigan (these are a must if wearing a sleeveless shirt) o Dark, conservative colors for blazers, sweaters, slacks, skirts, and dresses. Avoid more casual, fun colors and busy patterns. o Modestly cut blouses or button-down shirts with sleeves (if not wearing a jacket or cardigan). Avoid sheer blouses! Choose a solid color or small pattern that isn’t distracting. o Knee-length skirt or dress. Pair it with a blazer for a more professional look. Hosiery is still acceptable but not always required – when hired, check the dress code of your company. o Dress shoes (avoid open-toed shoes). Heels or flats are appropriate. o Trouser socks or hosiery with pants – never wear white or black athletic socks. If you like to show your personality with your socks, just keep your audience in mind before going too far. o Be neatly groomed. Always shower, trim hair and nails. What to avoid: o Low-cut blouses, t-shirts, or other casual tops. o Sleeveless shirts without a blazer or cardigan. o Faded, ratty khakis that have seen better days. Fresh khakis are ok but not the best professional option. o Skirts that are shorter than knee-length. o Boat shoes, tennis shoes, duck boots, or sandals. o Super high heels. 2 – 3 inches is the maximum. Flats are ok! It’s important to be comfortable. o Too much jewelry or makeup. A little goes a long way! The Deal on Business Casual. Once we get the job, business casual may be our normal attire. Typically, this means, conservative dresses, skirts, nice pants (khakis are ok, jeans typically are not), sweater, blouse or button-down shirt (no t-shirts). Sport coats and blazers can pull an outfit together but a tie is optional. What about Casual Fridays? This isn’t a given at every organization. Clarify before you wear jeans and your favorite MGA t-shirt, which paired with a blazer could make a great casual Friday look for the office.
