ey all you scientists, try this water experiment. Floating lets you stay at the water’s surface when you’re swimming. Take a look at what else floats! Walk around your house and collect items you’d like to test – plastic toys, paper clips, fruit, rocks, a spoon, etc.

1. Make a list of your objects and write down for each one whether you think it’ll sink or float. 2. Fill a plastic bin or other large container with water.

3. Place one object at a time into the bin. 4. Record your results! For each item: Did it sink or float? Did you notice anything that was the same about the objects that floated? Or the ones that sank?

THE WHY: Objects sink or float based on their density, which is determined by how close together or far apart molecules are within an item. Some objects are more dense than water, so they sink. Others are less dense than water, so they’ll float.

Beat the Heat! I

t’s hot out there. That makes it the perfect weather for grabbing your swimsuit and towel and making a splash. From the sprinklers in your own back yard to neighborhood pools, splash pads and beaches, there are plenty of ways to get soaked. On a sizzling summer day you just might find Tamara Gussin, 9, and her sister Shoshana, 7, relaxing in their neighbor’s pool. They’ve also recently discovered Lily Pad Springs, a new water destination on Farmington Road in West Bloomfield that’s drawn some 16,500 visitors since it opened earlier this summer. The 5,500-square-foot splash pad has four water slides and a splash bucket that dumps 55 gallons of water every few minutes. “I like the big dump bucket, because it’s ginormous and also it gets me ginormously wet,” Shoshana said. The two love swimming. Shoshana likes to play mermaid in the pool, and both girls like to go to the beach every chance they get. “My favorite thing about the water in the summer is that if it’s really, really, really hot it’ll cool you down,” Tamara said. 6

Water covers about 71% of the Earth’s surface. And the oceans? They’ve got about 96.5% of Earth’s water inside. Water expands when it freezes (see for yourself

Since there’s the same amount of water on Earth as when it was formed, your drinking water might contain molecules dinosaurs drank.

It was developed in Israel in 1959 and has made a huge agricultural impact around the world. The system uses pipes and hoses to send water in the form of drips to farm crops’ roots. This conserves water and can increase plant yield. Pretty important for a country with limited water resources, and great news for the world.

In Michigan, you’re never more than six miles away from a body of water.
