2022 | 2023 ANNUAL REPORT WELCOME
Dear Friends,
We celebrated success with our Civic Youth Ensembles, seeing a significant increase in enrollment across the program. Outside of The Max, we worked with partners to engage with students and provide musical instruments and education through programs like Detroit Harmony. We are proud to have engaged with communities across Detroit as part of our Detroit Neighborhood Initiative events. These connections strengthen our ties with our city and reinforce the power of music in people’s lives. As we look ahead, our focus remains on building a strong organization that continues to inspire, educate, and transform lives. We express our deepest appreciation to our dedicated staff, musicians, stage crew, Board of Directors, Trustees, Governing Members, patrons, and donors for your unwavering support, which creates meaningful impact in Detroit and our global community. Together, we are the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and our commitment to excellence and innovation propels us toward a future filled with extraordinary musical experiences for all.
We enthusiastically present the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s 2022–23 Annual Report. The year was marked by significant milestones, artistic achievements, and the dedicated support of our community. We remained dedicated to presenting new music and world premieres, as well as championing works by groups who have historically been underrepresented, including women and people of color. On the William Davidson Neighborhood Concert Series, we brought unsurpassed musical experiences to 7 metro Detroit communities, including performances with Music Director Jader Bignamini, who continues to bring out the best in our orchestra. We welcomed new leadership as Na’Zir McFadden began his role as Assistant Conductor and Phillip & Lauren Fisher Community Ambassador, as well as Music Director of the Detroit Symphony Youth Orchestra. Daring, versatile, and charismatic, Robyn Bollinger also assumed her role as Concertmaster (Katherine Tuck Chair). These talented artists contribute to the rich tapestry of our orchestra, ensuring a bright and vibrant future. Our exploration of diverse musical experiences extended beyond the traditional, with film concert experiences and tributes to artists like ABBA and Aretha Franklin. These programs allow us to connect with audiences With gratitude, in new and exciting ways, celebrating the universal language of music.

REMEMBERING OUR DSO FAMILY The DSO fondly remembers two members of our family, lost too soon.
Shanda Lowery-Sachs DSO Violist 2001-2023 Shanda was a member of the DSO viola section from 2001 until her retirement last season. She brought consummate artistry to the Orchestra Hall stage and to our performances throughout the community each week. Everyone who knew Shanda felt her strength, warmth, passion, empathy, and humor, and she will be greatly missed. We share our condolences with Shanda’s loved ones and friends.
Steve Kemp
DSO Audio Engineer 2003-2023 Audio Department Head Steve Kemp retired this past summer after spending 19 years as a stagehand with the DSO. His larger-than-life personality and smile will be deeply missed in our DSO community. Our deepest condolences are with Steve’s family and friends, including the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), of which Steve was a member.

HEROES GALA
The eleventh annual Heroes Gala and Concert honored developer, philanthropist, and Chair Emeritus Peter D. Cummings. The Heroes Gala concert was conducted by Music Director Jader Bignamini and featured two of today’s most acclaimed artists, Michael Feinstein and Jean-Yves Thibaudet, in an innovative program celebrating 20th century American music. This year’s Heroes Gala raised over $1.1 million in support of the DSO’s music education initiatives. Thank you to our honorary patrons Stanley and Judy Frankel and Jim and Ann Nicholson, and honorary chairs Mark Davidoff and Margie Dunn, Phillip and
Lauren Fisher, Mariam Noland and Jim Kelly, Bob and Sandy Riney, Stephen Ross, Nancy and Arn Tellem, Barbara Van Dusen, and premier sponsors Stanley and Judy Frankel, Julie and Peter Cummings, The Marjorie S. Fisher Fund, and Linda Dresner and Ed Levy, Jr.
DINE AND DECANT The DSO’s signature wine and music benefit returned with Dine and Decant, where guests enjoyed a strolling dinner, a unique selection of wines, and exclusive performances by DSO musicians, raising $75,000. The DSO is grateful to Carolynn and Aaron Frankel
and Judy Frankel Antiques for their presenting sponsorship of this event. Additional sponsors included PNC Bank, Carola and Ric Huttenlocher, Kevin Dennis and Jeremy Zeltzer, and Mary Ann and Robert Gorlin.
