GOVERNING MEMBERS In 2013, Jim Farber became the second chair of the Governing Members — taking the torch from Arthur T. O’Reilly, who grew the base of support from 160 in the program’s inaugural year to more than Jim Farber 300 households giving $2.5K+. Jim has led his executive team with the precedent set by Mr. O’Reilly, growing that number from 300 to 362 at the close of this past fiscal year and has established an audacious goal for the next few years, “The Path to 500.”

SINCE THE PROGRAM’S INCEPTION IN 2011, THE GOVERNING MEMBERS HAVE EXPERIENCED SIGNIFICANT GROWTH, MORE THAN DOUBLING THE NUMBER OF VOTING HOUSEHOLDS.

GABRILOWITSCH SOCIETY The undercurrent of the DSO has been and always will be innovation. We continue to achieve our mission of being a leader of classical music by striking our own path as the most accessible orchestra on the planet. Recognizing that these achievements are not possible without the support of our highest-level donors, the DSO and Janet and Norm Ankers established the Gabrilowitsch Society to recognize and celebrate those who will lead us to a financially viable and stable future. 8

Janet and Norm Ankers

For 2016, the Governing Members Executive Committee has been given a charge to Strengthen, Refresh and Grow. A thorough analysis has been done to make sure the foundation remains rock solid and action plans are being implemented to continually find new ways to bring Governing Members closer to the musical EXPERIENCE, both onstage and off. All of this is designed to facilitate meaningful and sustainable growth in the donor base. - Jim Farber, Governing Members Chairman OFFICERS James C. Farber Chairman

FIFTH ANNUAL

HEROES GALA JUNE 6, 2015

With a goal of raising $1 million, proceeds from the 2015 Heroes Gala were raised in support of the DSO’s commitment to transforming the lives of children and youth across our region through music education.

The evening took place in tribute to the Davidson/Gerson family. The DSO fondly remembers Bill Davidson’s passionate belief that full community engagement is not possible with concerts at Orchestra Hall alone. He proved his wisdom by funding domestic and international tours for the DSO, and his family has continued that legacy by supporting our travel to southern Florida and New York City. Last season, the William Davidson Neighborhood Concert series served thousands of families around metro Detroit.

ARTISTIC LEADERSHIP Leonard Slatkin Music Directorship endowed by the Kresge Foundation Internationally renowned conductor Leonard Slatkin began his tenure as Music Director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 2008. In addition, Maestro Slatkin is the Music Director of the Orchestre National de Lyon, a position he has held since 2011. He is highly regarded for his historic leadership of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra from 1979 to 1996 and his tenure as Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra from 1996 to 2008. He has also served as Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra and held Principal Guest Conductor positions with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

COMMITMENT EXTENDED BY DSO LEADERSHIP In December 2015, Leonard Slatkin extended his commitment to the DSO through the 2019-2020 season, serving as Music Director through 2017-2018, and thereafter adopting the role of the DSO’s first ever Music Director Laureate.

Gabriela Lena Frank DSO Music Alive Composer-in-Residence Composer and pianist, Dr. Gabriela Lena Frank began her 3-year tenure as composer-inresidence in 2013 under Music Director Leonard Slatkin. Winner of a Latin Grammy and nominated for Grammys as both composer and pianist, Frank also holds a Guggenheim Fellowship and a USA Artist Fellowship given each year to 50 of the country’s finest artists.

12

Jeff Tyzik Principal Pops Conductor A tremendously versatile artist, Tyzik is many things to many people. On stage, audiences love him for his engaging podium style and stellar trumpet playing. Behind the scenes, musicians love him for his brilliant arranging, intelligent programming and straight-shooting professionalism. An anomaly among conductors, Tyzik creates every one of his signature programs from scratch—including his programs with guest artists— and he always includes opportunities to feature members of the orchestra.

Terence Blanchard Fred A. and Barbara M. Erb Jazz Creative Director Chair Five-time Grammy Award-winning trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard joined the DSO as the Fred A. and Barbara M. Erb Jazz Creative Director Chair beginning with the 2012-13 season of the Paradise Jazz Series. His inaugural season honored the towering jazz tradition of this great hall by featuring appearances by many of our living jazz giants, including iconic drummer Roy Haynes as well as bassist Dave Holland and pianist Kenny Barron in a rare duo appearance.

Michelle Merrill Assistant Conductor, Phillip and Lauren Fisher Community Ambassador

Rapidly rising conductor Michelle Merrill is the newly named Assistant Conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. A passionate and dynamic artist, Merrill was awarded the prestigious Ansbacher Conducting Fellowship in 2013 by members of the Vienna Philharmonic and the American Austrian Foundation, which enabled her to be in residence at the world-renowned Salzburg Festival.

. . . BUILDING RE-DEDICATION

MAX M. & MARJORIE S. FISHER MUSIC CENTER In recognition of a lifetime of support to the organization, the DSO is honored to have added local philanthropist Marjorie S. Fisher’s name to its home at the Max M. Fisher Music Center in July 2015.

The performance and community center at 3711 Woodward Avenue, home to historic Orchestra Hall, The Music Box, Robert A. and Maggie Allesee Rehearsal Hall and Jacob Bernard Pincus Music Education Center, shall now be known as the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center. Nicknamed The Max, the center jointly celebrates Mr. Fisher’s founding vision for a cultural campus that also serves as a community gathering place with Mrs. Fisher’s extraordinary personal legacy of philanthropic support of the DSO’s musicians and programs.

Members of the DSO community gathered with members of the Fisher family to officially unveil the new signage on Woodward Ave. during a ceremony on July 9.

POPS SERIES Jeff Tyzik put together his second Pops season as DSO Principal Pops Conductor, which garnered a 16 percent increase in subscribers for the series. Highlights of the 2014-15 season included tributes to Simon & Garfunkel and Nat King Cole, the aerial acrobatics of Cirque de la Symphonie, and Gershwin’s Porgy & Bess. The ensemble returned to Meadow Brook Music Festival for an appearance for the Music of Star Wars, attracting over 6,000 people. Subscription revenue from the DSO Pops Series presented by the MASCO Corporation Foundation and Greektown Casino Hotel increased by 8 percent and subscriber base grew by 4 percent compared to the previous year. With box office revenues exceeding $432,000, 2014’s “Home for the Holidays” concerts set the box office record for the December concert event. The previous record was set in 2013 with more than $425,000 in revenue. Led by Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik, Broadway vocalists Gary Mauer and Beth Southard joined the DSO and choirs from Bloomfield Hills High School and Grosse Pointe South High School to perform holiday favorites from “Sleigh Ride” to “Baby It’s Cold Outside.”

20

PARADISE JAZZ SERIES In Terence Blanchard’s third season as Fred A. & Barbara M. Erb Jazz Creative Chair, the Paradise Jazz Series sponsored by MGM Grand Detroit saw a remarkable 24 percent increase in the number of subscribers as well as a 9 percent increase in subscription revenue. Most Paradise Jazz Series concert was preceded by a Music Box performance of Civic Jazz Live, which added to the overall experience for DSO jazz audiences and provided incredible performance opportunities for our Civic Jazz students.

In November 2014, the DSO announced a partnership with the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and composer Tod Machover to compose a symphony about Detroit, for Detroit and essentially by Detroit. Machover spent the next year collecting sounds from around the city and from Detroiters who submitted sound files of their own in order to answer the question, “What does Detroit sound like?” The DSO performed the World Premiere of “Symphony in D” in November 2015 to a sold-out audience, and was featured in The New York Times and the BBC.

22

NEW YEAR’S EVE The DSO rang in the New Year on Dec. 31, 2014 with its first ever New Year’s Eve Concert and extravaganza. Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik paired up with trumpet player Byron Stripling and organist Bobby Floyd to lead the orchestra in a swinging combination of jazz standards like “Sweet Georgia Brown” and “Ain’t Misbehavin’,” as well as light classical selections by Strauss and Smetana. Boasting a packed house at Orchestra Hall, the concert was televised live on Detroit Public Television to thousands of metro Detroiters. Major funding was provided by the Stanley and Judith Frankel Family Foundation.

Nearly 17,000 tickets sold during last year’s three-week Tchaikovsky Festival, and 30 percent of single ticket buyers were new to the DSO. Ticket sales during the festival, when compared to a non-Festival three-week span, were exponentially higher. The orchestra performed each of Tchaikovsky’s symphonies along with several other works spanning the composer’s tumultuous career. The National Endowment for the Arts sponsored digital content for the festival, which included a stop-motion trailer featuring 24

MEET MADDY... Maddy, short for Matryoshka, and her nesting doll brood served as the mascots for the Tchaikovsky Festival.

Maddy, the Russian nesting doll that became our beloved mascot. Live recordings of the six symphonies were recorded for digital release on the DSO’s in-house label, Live From Orchestra Hall. The recording was released in May in celebration of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s 175th birthday and appeared in the Top 5 on iTunes Classical charts. With 567 downloads sold, and more than 97,000 streams, “Tchaikovsky’s Six Symphonies” is the DSO’s most successful recording of Slatkin’s tenure.

She starred in the very popular stop-motion promo that received some 100,000 views and counting. Maddy was involved in preparation for the festival, attended concerts and even assisted with operations. Search for #TchaikFest to reveal her many adventures. Die-cut Maddy inserts were distributed in the program books at every festival concert, with instructions to take a #DSOselfie with her.

OPERA IN CONCERT:

PUCCINI’S TOSCA

Leonard Slatkin began a tradition last May of ending each season with an opera in concert production. Our semi-staged version of Puccini’s Tosca starred world-renowned soprano Patricia Racette singing the role of Tosca, great American tenor James Valenti as Cavaradossi and internationally-acclaimed American bass-baritone Raymond Aceto as Scarpia.

Love, suspicion, political corruption, torture, murder, a duplicitous firing squad, and a suicide – Puccini’s Tosca, a grandstand way for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Leonard Slatkin to complete their 2014-15 Season. – Classical Source

INTRODUCING DSO REPLAY In August, the DSO launched the nation’s only on-demand classical performance archive to some 5,000 inaugural members—DSO Replay. Through Replay, music fans can stream full-length classical works on-demand in HD. Boasting more than 100 works originally performed on the orchestra’s Live From Orchestra Hall webcast series, the archive is refreshed with new content each week during the classical season. Users simply log on to dso.org/replay to explore the new online environment. The DSO is the first American orchestra to make its performance archive available on-demand. Prior to Replay’s inception, past Live From Orchestra Hall footage was only available through special encore broadcasts on dso.org/live or through YouTube clips. All patrons who join the annual fund with a gift of $50 or more receive full access. Viewers can browse content by composer, date, or through a rotating series of curated playlists such as “Virtuoso Violin,” “Living Composers,” “Made in America,” and many more.

33

FINANCIAL SUMMARY

EARNED REVENUE While reported national trends reveal waning orchestra subscription rates and a greater reliance on single ticket sales, the DSO finished its 2014-15 season with its fourth consecutive year of subscription growth across all product lines. Revenue was up 1.6 percent while the number of families subscribing was up 5.4 percent.

CONTRIBUTED REVENUE In fiscal year 2015, the DSO raised $17.42 million in annual, event and project contributions, exceeding its ambitious annual fundraising goal of $17.18 million. The success in individual giving is owing to the generosity of 9,745 donors.

34

With our intentional and disciplined march towards sustainability, we find comfort in achieving the necessary balance between a growing passion to be multidimensional, and a deepened resolve to be laser focused around purpose, with a crystal clear identity. ANNE PARSONS, PRESIDENT AND CEO
