2016 DSO HEROES JOHN A. & MARLENE L. BOLL
The sixth annual Heroes Gala and Benefit Concert honored John A. and Marlene L. Boll for more than 30 years of support for the DSO and a legendary commitment to philanthropy in Southeast Michigan. The concert, headlined by Broadway star Megan Hilty, celebrated Marlene’s career as a dancer and former member of the Rockettes. The Gala raised more than $1.1 million in support of the DSO’s commitment to transforming the lives of children and youth across our region through music education.
GABRILOWITSCH SOCIETY The undercurrent of the DSO has been and always will be innovation. We continue to achieve our mission of being a leader of classical music by striking our own path as the most accessible orchestra on the planet. Recognizing that these achievements are not possible without the support of our highest-level donors, the DSO and Janet and Norm Ankers established the Gabrilowitsch Society to recognize and celebrate those who will lead us to a financially viable and stable future. 8

He is highly regarded for his historic leadership of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra from 1979 to 1996 and his tenure as Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra from 1996 to 2008. He has also served as Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra and held Principal Guest Conductor positions with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
MICHELLE MERRILL Assistant Conductor

A passionate and dynamic artist, Ms. Merrill was named as one of Hour Detroit Magazine’s three Cultural Organization Leaders to Watch, and made her classical subscription debut with the DSO in April 2016. She is also a recipient of a 2016 Solti Foundation U.S. Career Assistance Award. Ms. Merrill was named Associate Conductor of the DSO in September 2016. 10
JEFF TYZIK
Principal Pops Conductor A tremendously versatile artist, Tyzik is many things to many people. On stage, audiences love him for his engaging podium style and stellar trumpet playing. Behind the scenes, musicians love him for his brilliant arranging, intelligent programming and straight-shooting professionalism. An anomaly among conductors, Tyzik creates every one of his signature programs from scratch— including his programs with guest artists—and he always includes opportunities to feature members of the orchestra.
TERENCE BLANCHARD
Fred A. and Barbara M. Erb Jazz Creative Director Chair Terence Blanchard is a Grammy Award-winning trumpeter, composer, bandleader, and arranger. He has recorded more than 30 albums, the most recent of which is Breathless for Blue Note Records, executive produced by Detroit legend Don Was. He has composed scores for more than 50 films, including Lucasfilm’s 2013 historical drama Red Tails, about African-American pilots in World War II. Blanchard joined the DSO as the Fred A. and Barbara M. Erb Jazz Creative Director Chair beginning with the 2012-13 season of the Paradise Jazz Series.

Winner of a Latin Grammy and nominated for Grammys as both composer and pianist, Frank also holds a Guggenheim Fellowship and a USA Artist Fellowship given each year to 50 of the country’s finest artists. Her work has been described as “crafted with unselfconscious mastery” (Washington Post), and “brilliantly effective” (New York Times). A member of the Silk Road Ensemble, Gabriela is regularly commissioned by luminaries such as cellist Yo-Yo Ma, soprano Dawn Upshaw, the King’s Singers, and the Kronos Quartet. 11

INVENTING THE CONCERT EXPERIENCE

ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE CLASSICAL SERIES The 2015-2016 season launched with Jean-Yves Thibaudet in George Gershwin’s jazzy Concerto in F. Other season highlights included a stirring Mahler “Resurrection” Symphony led by Music Director Leonard Slatkin, Assistant Conductor Michelle Merrill leading her first Classical subscription concerts, and a visit from the always brilliant and engaging Nigel Kennedy, who made his first U.S. appearance in 18 years exclusively with the DSO and Maestro Slatkin. For the second year in a row, the DSO ended the Classical season with an opera-in-concert performance. This time it was Strauss’ intense and seductive Salome, starring soprano Lise Lindstrom and tenor Chris Merritt. EXPANDING THE REPERTOIRE Music Director Leonard Slatkin’s leadership in programming new music by contemporary American composers was on display during the season with premieres by Nico Muhly, Mohammed Fairouz, Aaron Jay Kernis, Tod Machover, Lebenbom Award winner Sarah Kirkland Snider, and Slatkin’s own piece Kinah, a moving tribute to his parents.
The music sounded fresh, organic, and smart. The setting for the premiere ... also made an important point about the power of music to transcend cultural differences. - DETROIT FREE PRESS ON MOHAMMED FAIROUZ’S DESERT SORROWS
CONNECTING CULTURES THROUGH MUSIC Mohammed Fairouz’s Desert Sorrows, a concerto for cellist Maya Beiser, illustrated one of the ways the Detroit Symphony Orchestra is reaching out to different communities. This DSO commission, made possible by Peter D. and Julie F. Cummings, is music by a Muslim American composer, performed by an Israeli cellist, and premiered at a synagogue. Watch the video below to learn more:

RENOWNED GUEST ARTISTS The Detroit Symphony Orchestra welcomed back acclaimed guest conductors and soloists throughout the 2015-2016 season, including Joshua Bell, Sir Andrew Davis, Jeremy Denk, Hans Graf, Hèléne Grimaud, Giancarlo Guerrero, Nigel Kennedy, and Peter Oundjian. Making their DSO debuts were conductors Nikolaj Znaider and the Paris-born Fabien Gabel, who led the DSO in a powerful performance of the French national anthem La Marseillaise the week of the Paris terrorist attacks in November. Soloists making their DSO debuts included violinist Simone Porter, violist Nadia Sirota, cellist Danjulo Ishizaka, and pianist Simon Trpčeski.
ENGAGING THE COMMUNITY The premiere of Symphony in D: The groundbreaking musical portrait of the city of Detroit involved a more collaborative compositional process than most orchestral works, and was made possible with support from the John L. and James S. Knight Foundation. MIT Media Lab composer Tod Machover asked the question “What does Detroit sound like?” to anyone and everyone he could, and the result was an extraordinary piece of music that included everything from oral history to electronic music and factory sounds. Symphony in D is radically inclusive, as the only way to compose music that represents a city is to work with the people of that city. Watch excerpts of the piece below:

ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE POPS SERIES Jeff Tyzik put together his fourth Pops season as DSO Principal Pops Conductor. Highlights of the 2015-2016 season included appearances by Doc Severinsen, original Supreme Mary Wilson, plus musical tributes to the Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, U2, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, John Williams, and Tim Burton. “Home for the Holidays,” Detroit’s favorite winter tradition, returned to Orchestra Hall for six packed performances.
PARADISE JAZZ SERIES In Terence Blanchard’s third season as Fred A. & Barbara M. Erb Jazz Creative Chair, the Paradise Jazz Series welcomed the Christian McBride Big Band, Regina Carter, Eliane Elias, the SFJAZZ Collective, and more, including Patti Austin for a musical celebration of Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington.
WILLIAM DAVIDSON NEIGHBORHOOD SERIES Last year marked the DSO’s fifth season of presenting concerts regularly in communities around metro Detroit, and the series has continued to grow, not only in terms of audience numbers and ticket sales, but also in reaching people new to the DSO and then getting them to come to concerts at Orchestra Hall. The leadership support of the William Davidson Foundation has been a remarkable investment in growing the DSO’s classical audience through this series. In 2015-2016, performances took place at the Seligman Performing Arts Center (Beverly Hills), Kirk in the Hills Presbyterian Church (Bloomfield Hills), Village Theater at Cherry Hill (Canton), Macomb Center for the Performing Arts (Clinton Township), Our Lady Star of the Sea (Grosse Pointe), Congregation Shaarey Zedek (Southfield), and The Berman Center for the Performing Arts (West Bloomfield).

THIRD ANNUAL WINTER MUSIC FESTIVAL The winter Brahms Festival highlighted all four of the German composer’s symphonies, as well as concertos, chamber music, and other works—both in and out of Orchestra Hall. Special events included a romantic Valentine’s Day presentation of the Liebeslieder Waltzes at the DIA’s Kresge Court and a memorable Mix @ The Max titled “Brahms, Beards, and Burlesque,” paying tribute to the composer’s early career as a bordello pianist.
BRAHMS SCHOLAR: JAN SWAFFORD The official scholar of Brahms Festival offered additional insight to the music of Brahms through digital program notes and pre-concert discussions.

DSO DIGITAL
DSO WEBCASTS HAVE SURPASSED 1 MILLION VIEWS LIVE FROM ORCHESTRA HALL Ever since the first Live from Orchestra Hall webcast in 2011, the DSO has continued to increase its investment in digital technology and remain in the vanguard of 21st century orchestra innovation. During the 2015-2016 Live from Orchestra Hall season (presented by Ford Motor Company Fund and made possible with the generous support of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation), the DSO presented 30 webcasts reaching hundreds of thousands of viewers worldwide. Average number of viewers per live webcast increased 23 percent to just under 4,400 viewers.
CLASSROOM EDITION With leading support from the Mandell and Madeleine Berman Foundation, Live from Orchestra Hall: Classroom Edition made it possible for tens of thousands of children to watch the DSO’s Educational Concerts. Through partnerships with Detroit and Detroit-area schools—as well as convenient resource and curriculum guides for educators—the DSO reached more than 150,000 local, regional, national, and international students directly in their classrooms.
DSO REPLAY In August 2015, the DSO launched the nation’s only on-demand classical performance archive to some 5,000 inaugural members. Through Replay, music fans can stream full-length classical works on-demand in HD. The archive is refreshed with new content each week during the classical season. The DSO is the first American orchestra to make its performance archive available on-demand. All patrons who join the Annual Fund with a gift of $50 or more receive full access. Replay enabled the DSO to expand the geographic footprint of its donor base with fans and supporters around the globe. 22
RECORDINGS New digital recordings on the DSO’s Live From Orchestra Hall label topped iTunes classical charts in the 2015-2016 season.
SOCIAL MEDIA The DSO recently reached a social media milestone, surpassing 100,000 followers across all platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. This was an increase of approximately 25% since last season. Viral videos included the DSO’s new partnership with Carhartt to provide new concert attire for the orchestra, announced to the world on April 1, 2015.

DSO IN YOUR COMMUNITY
DSO horn players David Everson, Bryan Kennedy, Scott Strong, and Karl Pituch with Faye Nelson, Board Chair and President of DTE Energy Foundation and Vice President of DTE Energy Co.
COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY OUTREACH DTE Energy Foundation awarded the DSO $2M toward community outreach to bring the symphony’s music to communities across southeast Michigan. The gift includes a three-year commitment to continue the free Community Concert Week every fall, and also includes endowment support for music education, senior citizen outreach, and additional community engagement programming. COMMUNITY CONCERT WEEK A week of orchestra concerts in four different venues across Southeast Michigan presented by DTE Energy Foundation. The concert locations were nominated and voted on by the public in the #DTEPowersDSO venue competition and conducted by DSO Assistant Conductor and Phillip and Lauren Fisher Community Ambassador Michelle Merrill. Providing unforgettable musical experiences for underserved communities has been a priority of my tenure in Detroit. In an ideal world, gaining access to beautiful music should be as simple as flipping a light switch. It’s a pleasure to work with the DTE Energy Foundation to take a powerful step in that direction.
- LEONARD SLATKIN, MUSIC DIRECTOR

DSO IN YOUR COMMUNITY
BEYOND THE CONCERT HALL The DSO continues to focus on bringing live music into the community, with regular performances in schools, hospitals, community centers, assisted living facilities, and other locations. The DSO also reaffirmed its commitment to chamber performance, often in unexpected settings. DSO musicians performed chamber works in intimate spaces throughout Metro Detroit, including Belle Isle Casino (for the first time), Grosse Pointe War Memorial, and Planterra. On Tuesday, May 17, the DSO presented “Art. Humanity. Survival. at Planterra, a botanical garden and event space in West Bloomfield, MI, in partnership with Michigan Humanities Council. The evening included a reading from the novel Station Eleven by its author Emily St. John Mandel, and the program featured chamber music works crowd sourced by the patrons, mirroring a plot of the book.

MUSIC EDUCATION & TRAINING ENSEMBLES MUSIC ALIVE COMPOSER-IN-RESIDENCE: GABRIELA LENA FRANK Music Alive, administered in partnership with the League of American Orchestras, aims to bring new music to the forefront of America’s orchestras and the communities whom they serve. One aspect of the Music Alive program, Music Alive Residencies, focused on creating deep and innovative approaches to extended, multi-year composer residencies as models for the field. Five orchestras, including the DSO, were awarded Music Alive Residencies in 2013, with performances and activities extending through the 2015-2016 Season. SCHOOL VISITS By visiting several schools in Detroit and the Detroit area, Music Alive Composer-In-Residence Gabriela Lena Frank contributed to the DSO’s mission of robust educational outreach. Lena Frank spoke to students at a variety of schools, including Woodworth Middle School, Detroit School of the Arts (where she addressed a classroom of students with hearing impairment), and Wayne State University (where she addressed a classroom of music composition students).
AMERICAN HOUSE ANTHEM As a celebration of our longstanding partnership with American House Senior Living, Gabriela Lena Frank composed the American House Anthem, a new work premiered at the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center with vocal accompaniment from American House residents.

WU FAMILY ACADEMY The vision of the Wu Family Academy for Learning and Engagement is to change lives by expanding the understanding of the arts, empowering everyone to have confidence in their creative decisions, and sparking a passion for music that will last a lifetime. The Wu Family Academy aims to change lives — whether as a hobby or a career — through life-long music making. Cementing the legacy of Dr. Clyde and Helen Wu—whose guiding vision led to the exponential growth of the DSO’s education programming—the DSO received a remarkably generous gift of more than $2.9 million from their estate in 2015-2016. EXPANDING CIVIC YOUTH ENSEMBLES (CYE) The DSO has gone to great lengths to make CYE more accessible, through the addition of dedicated entry points from partner organizations into the CYE umbrella. The result is a larger and more diverse CYE family, with more than double the number of Detroit school students enrolled compared to fiscal year 2015. A CYE group was also conducted by DSO Music Director Leonard Slatkin for the first time when the Maestro took the podium at the Detroit Symphony Youth Orchestra’s final Wu Family Academy Showcase of the season. STUDENTS FROM TWO CYE GROUPS PERFORMED AT THE 2016 HEROES GALA The sixth annual Heroes Gala and Benefit Concert took place on Saturday, June 18, and the DSO was thrilled to invite members of two youth ensembles to perform during the festivities. Five string players from the Detroit Symphony Youth Orchestra played onstage with the DSO during the beginning of the benefit concert. An ensemble of performers from the Civic Jazz Orchestra entertained Gala patrons at the post-concert Afterglow.
29
FINANCIALS EARNED REVENUE The DSO finished its 2015-2016 season with its fourth consecutive balanced budget and fifth consecutive year of subscription growth, continuing to defy a national trend. Subscription revenue was up 2 percent while the number of households subscribing was up over 4 percent.
CONTRIBUTED REVENUE In fiscal year 2016, the DSO collected $18.2 million in annual, event, operating grants, and project contributions, exceeding its annual fundraising goal of $17.1 million.
We have a remarkable story to tell: the impact we have on our community today and how we can play an important role in the bright future of our city. The stability of a fourth consecutive balanced budget enables us to think even bigger. - MARK DAVIDOFF, CHAIRMAN
