A MESSAGE FROM LEONARD SLATKIN This winter has been just a bit rough on even seasoned Detroiters. So it was with a great sense of anticipation that the members of the DSO embarked on a fivecity, six-concert tour of Florida with the support of the General Motors Foundation, Cadillac, and many generous donors. It was my privilege to stand before this orchestra and bring our music to more than 10,000 concertgoers. On tour we had the opportunity to show off who we are and the city we represent. Of course we had plenty of supporters who left the frozen north and headed down south. These listeners know what we are accomplishing at home and were proud of what we brought to their sun-drenched neighbors. All our performances were greeted with ovations and cheers. The press was most kind, and we felt welcomed at every stop. Our dear sponsors, donors, and patrons were there for us at all times. We were able to bring our community outreach programs to hospitals, universities, and other unexpected “pop-up” venues in each city we visited. Throughout the tour, we reconnected with friends we met four years ago and welcomed new ones. Letting everyone in on the resurgence of our city and the DSO’s role at the forefront of this renaissance was most gratifying. All one had to do was hear the strains of Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Brahms, Gould, Copland, or Prokofiev to know that not only were these composers in safe hands, but Detroit’s future was as well. Please enjoy reading and seeing some of the highlights of this wonderful tour.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH As Detroit’s most exportable cultural asset, the DSO treated the southern Florida community as if it were its very own. The DSO Neighborhood Residency Initiative puts musicians in schools, senior living communities, hospitals, libraries, and other intimate settings across southeast Michigan. Applying that same initiative on tour took our musicians to St. Mary’s Children’s Hospital, MorseLife Senior Living, Hospice of Palm Beach County, and The Gardens shopping center, all in West Palm Beach.

Roll over, Beethoven, and tell Tchaikovsky the news: veering sharply from traditional classical concert decorum, Leonard Slatkin told concert-goers in West Palm Beach, Fla., Tuesday night that he and the Detroit Symphony were ready for their close-up (or long shot, as the case might be), and invited them to whip out phones, snap pictures of the scene, and post them on social media to instantly commemorate the moment. - LA Times “Culture Monster blog

SHARING THE SPIRIT OF “ONE DSO”
. . . there was more than music in the DSO’s beachside tour. Much more, in fact. Besides the artistic excellence that has become a hallmark of the DSO, and the incredible flair and musicianship Maestro Slatkin brings to the podium, there was this new thing we call “One DSO,” a belief that we’re all in this thing together and the only way we can be successful is together. - Bud Liebler, Board of Directors, OpEd in the Detroit News Below: Sheryl Hwangbo and Jing Zhang, violin, Hang Su, viola, and David LeDoux, cello, give a “pop-up” performance at The Waterside Shops in Naples, FL.
