2018 | 2019 ANNUAL REPORT WELCOME Dear Friends, It is our great pleasure to present you with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s 2018-2019 Annual Report, in which you can read about the many highlights from the past year. It was a fantastic year, full of artistic highlights, community engagement, and educational impact. But it was also a year of anticipation, as we prepared to celebrate the centennial of our home, Orchestra Hall, one of the greatest concert halls in the world. The DSO and Orchestra Hall are together today because of a remarkable moment of leadership 100 years ago when citizens of Detroit banded together and said a world-class orchestra deserves a world-class concert hall, and that our city deserves both. Civic leadership was also demonstrated in 1970 when a group of musicians and community members brought together by Paul Ganson helped to save Orchestra Hall from the wrecking ball, and in 1989 when the DSO made the decision to leave downtown and return here to midtown, becoming trailblazers in a renaissance of an entire neighborhood. For over a century, leaders of the DSO and in our community have passionately believed that our city needs a world-class orchestra in order to fully thrive. People like Chairman Emeritus Al Glancy, who we sadly lost last season and who was instrumental in the days when the DSO returned to Orchestra Hall and whose legacy still supports our live webcasts week after week; people like Director Emeritus Mort Harris, a true hero who we honored at our annual gala in June; and like Chairman Emeritus Jim Nicholson, whose impact is immeasurable and who we honored in March as our fifth ever Lifetime Member. As was true in 1919, we have bold plans. Our future is bright. From attracting and retaining the best talent in the world, both on stage and off, to ensuring that every student in Detroit has access to an instrument, we are energized by our commitment to harmonize Detroit, and all Detroiters, through music. Your commitment is the fuel for the DSO engine. Let’s make it happen together as one DSO family. With appreciation,
Anne Parsons

REMEMBERING AL GLANCY 1939 - 2019
The DSO fondly remembers the leadership of Chairman Emeritus Alfred R. Glancy III, who passed away on January 10, 2019. Al joined the DSO board of directors in 1974, serving for 40 years including six as its chairman (1992 – 1998). During his tenure as chairman, Al was instrumental in holding the organization together following a major loss of state funding, and he later led the board during the launch of the Orchestra Place project in 1996, which began a period of much-needed development in the area surrounding Orchestra Hall. Since 2014, the Alfred R. Glancy III Capital Reserve and Technology Fund has bolstered the DSO and its facilities, including providing for new stage flooring and upgrades to its webcast technology and cameras. In recognition for this support, the DSO named its webcast control room in Al’s honor. A generous, passionate, and action-oriented donor, Al helped DSO staff and musicians alike get their jobs done, both on stage and off. May his memory be a blessing.

We were thrilled to welcome top musical talent from around the world to Orchestra Hall, and to welcome back Leonard Slatkin for his first season as Music Director Laureate. Major guest artists including Gil Shaham, Emanuel Ax, Hélène Grimaud, Kent Nagano, Simone Young, and Karina Canellakis all traveled across the globe to perform here in Detroit with our world-class orchestra. INTERLOCHEN The DSO concluded its 2018-2019 season with a much-anticipated return to Interlochen Center for the Arts at the end of July. The weeklong residency was the orchestra’s first visit since 2006 and reestablished the bond between the two iconic Michigan cultural institutions. In addition to performing a concert with conductor Matthias Pintscher and pianist Joseph Moog, DSO musicians led workshops and masterclasses and played in side-by-side rehearsals with Interlochen students. Many thanks to the following for their support of our partnership with Interlochen: Butzel Long, Joanne Danto & Arnold Weingarden, Elaine & Eugene C. Driker, Charlene Handleman, Mr. & Mrs. Paul Hooberman, Betsy & Joel Kellman, Nicole & Matt Lester, Shari & Craig Morgan, Hon. Kurtis T. Wilder, Drs. David & Bernadine Wu, Mrs. Richard C. Van Dusen, and one who wishes to remain anonymous. AMERICAN PANORAMA The DSO’s sixth Winter Music Festival celebrated the music, composers, and culture of the United States. Six all-American concert programs in Orchestra Hall were complemented by 13 festival events in The Peter D. and Julie F. Cummings Cube, presenting a wide view of our country’s artistic past, present, and future. Leonard Slatkin – a celebrated champion of American composers – led the orchestra in works like Joan Tower’s Sequoia, Barber’s Adagio for Strings, and John Luther Adams’ Pulitzer Prize-winning Become Ocean; there was also a performance of John Cage’s 4’33”, the world premiere of Kristin Kuster’s Dune Acres (commissioned by the DSO), and Henry Ford’s 1703 Stradivarius in the hands of Associate Concertmaster Kimberly Kaloyanides Kennedy (Schwartz Shapero Family Chair) thanks to a partnership with the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation. Across the William Davidson Atrium, The Cube presented film screenings, tributes to Dexter Gordon and George Walker, dance showcases, and performances by artists as diverse as Kaki King, Miguel Zenón, Shigeto, and Mumu Fresh. Throughout the season, we performed the works of well-known and up-andcoming contemporary composers. In addition to music by John Luther Adams, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Joan Tower, and others during American Panorama, the DSO played works by Daníel Bjarnason (Violin Concerto), Anna Clyne (“Three Sisters” Concerto), Sebastian Currier (Divisions), Andrew Norman (Play), and the DSO’s Lebenbom Award winner Juliet Palmer (Oil & Water). The Live from Orchestra Hall webcast series entered its eighth season, sharing the music of the DSO with listeners in all 50 states and 100 countries worldwide. More than 200,000 viewers tuned into 2018-2019 Classical Series webcasts and tens of thousands of students viewed Educational Concert Series performances right in their classrooms thanks to the Classroom Edition expansion. DSO Replay, the on-demand streaming service for archived webcasts, is available to anyone who donates $50 or more to the Annual Fund. The DSO remains the only major orchestra in the world to webcast all classical programs for free.

RECORDINGS In February 2019, the latest in the DSO’s series of John Williams concertos was released digitally on Naxos: the Tuba Concerto, featuring Principal Tuba Dennis Nulty. The following month, our disc of Copland’s Grohg and Billy The Kid was released on the Naxos American Classics series. Both releases were conducted by Music Director Laureate Leonard Slatkin, and the latter recording was nominated for the 2020 Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance! Additionally, James Ehnes’s 2018 album features the DSO performing James Newton Howard’s Violin Concerto with conductor Cristian Măcelaru.

WILLIAM DAVIDSON NEIGHBORHOOD CONCERT SERIES The orchestra returned to seven Metro Detroit venues – in Southfield, Clinton Township, Beverly Hills, West Bloomfield, Plymouth, Bloomfield Hills, and Grosse Pointe – to present the eighth annual William Davidson Neighborhood Concert Series. The series featured many DSO musicians as soloists, including Principal Cello Wei Yu (James C. Gordon Chair), Principal Clarinet Ralph Skiano (Robert B. Semple Chair), Principal Bassoon Robert Williams, and Principal Trumpet Hunter Eberly (Lee and Floy Barthel Chair). Guest conductors and artists included KenDavid Masur, Gemma New, Kensho Watanabe, Dmitry Sinkovsky, Edgar Moreau, and many others. PNC POPS SERIES The DSO’s PNC Pops Series kicked off with a symphonic tribute to Motown under the baton of Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik, who returned twice more to conduct programs of film music and arrangements of Beatles classics. The everpopular Home for the Holidays and Cirque de la Symphonie programs returned to the Orchestra Hall stage, and we also celebrated the music of The Wizard of Oz, classic Looney Tunes cartoons, the rock band Chicago, and more. PARADISE JAZZ SERIES The 2018-2019 Paradise Jazz Series closed with a touch of Hollywood. Terence Blanchard, the DSO’s Fred A. and Barbara M. Erb Jazz Creative Director Chair, wrapped up the record-breaking season leading a concert showcasing his longstanding collaboration with filmmaker Spike Lee, which had recently resulted in Terence’s first Oscar nomination for the score to BlacKkKlansman. With his band the E-Collective, plus the full DSO and vocalists Quiana Lynell and Ledisi, Blanchard played music from Jungle Fever, Malcolm X, Clockers, and more. Highlights from earlier in the season include some of the best performers in jazz on the Orchestra Hall stage: Dianne Reeves, Christian McBride, James Carter, Poncho Sanchez, Anat Cohen, Kendrick Scott, Cyrus Chestnut, and the awardwinning Spring Quartet (Jack DeJohnette, Joe Lovano, Esperanza Spalding, and Leo Genovese). The DSO is proud to be among the few major orchestras with regular jazz programming on its main stage.

SPECIAL PARTNERSHIPS The DSO continues to push the boundaries of all that an orchestra can be, and in 2018-2019 the DSO’s vanguard status was evident through three landmark partnerships. Deaf hip-hop artist Sean Forbes produced The Deaf and Loud Symphonic Experience, a first-of-its-kind concert showcase for the Deaf and hardof-hearing community that featured the DSO, Evelyn Glennie, Mandy Harvey, Jake Bass, Luis Resto, Dennis Coffey, Jeff Bass, and two dozen sign language interpreters. In association with the Detroit Pistons, the DSO welcomed legendary rapper Nas to perform a symphonic version of his monumental album Illmatic and other songs in Orchestra Hall. An ongoing collaboration with Lincoln Motor Company came to fruition with the debut of the all-new Lincoln Aviator, a luxury SUV whose alert tones are original compositions written and performed by DSO musicians – an industry first.

THE CUBE AND SOSNICK COURTYARD The Peter D. and Julie F. Cummings Cube presented 50 events in 20182019 – including the popular Om @ The Max yoga series, wine and music events, and performances by artists like Makoto Ozone, Quiana Lynell, Zoë Keating, Víkingur Ólafsson, and many others. The Cube’s mission to be a hub of innovative programming in Detroit also expanded beyond its four walls, as our outdoor Sosnick Courtyard space hosted its first regular programming this summer – featuring a tent full of arcade games, skateboarders shredding a halfpipe to live jazz music, Tai chi, movie screenings, and more. The DSO is grateful to the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, League of American Orchestras Futures Fund, Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation, and Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation for helping us activate this vital community space. DETROIT HARMONY The DSO began initial planning for Detroit Harmony, a major initiative that seeks to collaboratively put an instrument into the hands of every public, private, and charter school K-12 student in the city who wants to learn to play, and at the same time grow economic and workforce development in the city of Detroit. The program builds upon the extensive community and education programs of the Wu Family Academy for Learning and Engagement and stems from the commitment made in 2017 to improving the quality of life for all Detroiters as the central tenet of our Social Progress Initiative. Enormous thanks to the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation and the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Foundation for their partnership and support in this initial stage. EVENTS IN THE COMMUNITY

The DSO’s chamber music offerings grew, with 21 performances presented as part of the William Davidson Chamber Recital series and the inauguration of the new Sight and Sound series, which blends music and visual art in partnership with Wasserman Projects. Our popular Rush Hour Recitals also returned, with free pop-up style performances at bars, restaurants, parks, and other community spaces at the end of the workday. Additionally, DSO musicians performed at schools, hospitals, places of worship, senior living facilities, and other community venues in order to meet patrons, fans, and new audiences where they are and share music with as many people as possible. Our partnership with Kadima Mental Health Services even earned a clip on an episode of Detroit Public Television’s Detroit Performs. For the eighth consecutive year, we presented four free community concerts to kick off the season, powered by DTE Energy Foundation. The 2018 #DTEPowersDSO concerts took place in Detroit, Waterford, Monroe, and Sterling Heights, reaching more than 4,500 patrons. The DSO is a community-supported orchestra, meaning we have an obligation to give back to the community that sustains us. At the sixth annual Day of Service, DSO musicians, board members, trustees, and administrators left Orchestra Hall and spread throughout Metro Detroit to pitch in with three partner organizations: Keep Growing Detroit, Friends for the Animals of Metro Detroit, and Children’s Hospital of Michigan.

OUR COMMITMENT TO MUSIC EDUCATION The reach of training ensembles offered by the DSO has expanded in recent years, with the addition of the Detroit Community Ensembles for adults, and, as part of the Civic Youth Ensembles (CYE), the Vera and Joseph Dresner Foundation Allegro Ensemble and the Detroit Pistons Bucket Band. The latter two groups receive music instruction right in their schools – either during class or after school – and are invited to continue their studies in other Civic Youth Ensembles, hopefully beginning a journey towards a lifetime of music. As the DSO gears up to celebrate the 50th anniversary of CYE in 2021, our training programs reach and teach more than 950 students of all ages, skill levels, and instrument types.
PNC Grow Up Great
IN PARTNERSHIP WITH DETROIT SCHOOLS DSO musicians regularly perform in Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) schools – whether in a full-orchestra concert for an auditorium full of students, or as presenters/educators for pre-K children in the PNC Grow Up Great program.

Schoolchildren are also able to tune in to watch Classroom Edition webcasts of our longstanding Educational Concert Series (ECS) programming, which reaches tens of thousands of students online both in Detroit and around the world and in person at Orchestra Hall. A new partnership between DPSCD, the DSO, Detroit Institute of Arts, and Michigan Opera Theatre began in 2017 with the creation of the Cultural Passport program, which organizes arts and culture field trips for students in grades 3 through 5. The program was so successful in its first year that it expanded to encompass field trips for all K-8 students to 14 different cultural institutions (including the DSO) in 2018-2019.
Educational Concert Series
Another new initiative from 2017, the ECS Partner School Program, also expanded in 2018-2019. Seven schools participated, including six in DPSCD and one in Pontiac, and more than 1,000 K-5 students were visited by teaching artists and DSO musicians. Both the number of schools and number of students reached more than doubled from the first year to the second. HEROES GALA The DSO was excited to honor philanthropist and longtime DSO champion Mort Harris and to welcome Hamilton star Leslie Odom, Jr. to perform with the orchestra at the ninth annual Heroes Gala and Benefit Concert. As noted in the gala program book, Harris is a hero “in every sense of the word.” A decorated World War II veteran, he returned to Detroit after the war and found success in the business world. Never content to sit idly by, he became one of our region’s most prominent and generous philanthropists, with landmark support of Wayne State University, Henry Ford Health System, and of course the DSO. The gala raised $1 million to support the DSO’s education and community engagement programs and kicked off the yearlong celebration of Orchestra Hall’s centennial. Mort Harris, born just six months after Orchestra Hall’s grand opening, turned 99 in 2019; the Heroes Gala was a perfect opportunity to celebrate two century-long legacies. The sold-out concert featuring Leslie Odom, Jr. was conducted by Detroit native and audience favorite Damon Gupton.

CLASSICAL ROOTS The 41st annual Classical Roots Celebration raised more than $350,000 to support DSO programs that aim to create more opportunities for African Americans in classical music. The 2019 Honorees were composer, conductor, and educator Dr. Robert A. Harris and business leader and philanthropist Dr. William F. Pickard. We were thrilled to announce that Dr. Pickard, who established the DSO’s Arthur L. Johnson Fund for African-American Artists in 2012, doubled his gift to $1 million in support of the endowment fund. In recognition for Dr. Pickard’s support, the event will now be called the Arthur L. Johnson and Honorable Damon Jerome Keith Classical Roots Celebration. The Classical Roots concert program was conducted by André Raphel and featured Dr. Harris’s Gloria, as well as William Grant Still’s “Afro-American” Symphony and George Walker’s Lyric for Strings. The Brazeal Dennard Chorale, featured in every Classical Roots concert since 1978, performed John Rosamond Johnson’s “Lift Every Voice and Sing” and two spirituals before joining other vocalists to form the 134-voice Classical Roots Celebration Choir, which also included members of the Wayne State University Symphonic Chorus and the Detroit Choral Society. In community events leading up to Classical Roots, DSO musicians performed two chamber recitals featuring music by Classical Roots Composer-In-Residence Jonathan Bailey Holland. Holland, as well as African-American Orchestra Fellows Adam Sadberry and Michael Gause, visited Detroit classrooms to talk about their experiences and perform for students. RECOGNIZING JAMES B. NICHOLSON On March 16, 2019, the DSO recognized Chairman Emeritus James B. Nicholson as its fifth Lifetime Member, joining Samuel Frankel, David Handleman, Sr., Arthur L. Johnson, and Clyde Wu. Jim’s critical leadership over the years has greatly contributed to fortifying the DSO as a world-class orchestra. The DSO remains at the top of Jim’s philanthropic endeavors, and we couldn’t think of a better way to show him how much he is loved by the oneDSO family.

ADVANCEMENT HIGHLIGHTS CELEBRATING A CENTURY In the build-up to Orchestra Hall’s centennial year during the 2019-2020 season, incredible support from our oneDSO community has helped to make the celebration a success. The DSO thanks James B. and Ann V. Nicholson, the Honorable Avern Cohn and Lois Cohn, Bernard and Eleanor Robertson, Aaron and Carolynn Frankel, DTE Energy Foundation, Varnum LLP, Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, and Ford Motor Company Fund for their leadership support of the centennial. And enormous thanks as well to the Centennial Club, a sponsorship group of more than 150 members.
James B. and Ann V. Nicholson
REMARKABLE ENDOWMENT SUPPORT As announced in November 2018, the musicians of the DSO have come together to make an extraordinary pledge to the DSO’s endowment – the Musicians Fund for Artistic Excellence, a gift funded by contributions from every single musician and designed as a challenge for others to give as well. Carola and Richard Huttenlocher, Richard Sonenklar and Gregory Haynes, The Honorable Avern Cohn and Lois Cohn, and Lauren and Phillip Wm. Fisher are among the first to step up, pledging to match the musicians’ total commitment. Dedicated to advancing William “Bill” Davidson’s legacy of philanthropic giving, the William Davidson Foundation made a transformative $15 million investment in the DSO in 2017. Up to $5 million of its grant was designated as a 1:1 match towards the DSO’s permanent endowment. To date, $2.5 million has been provided as a match directly into the endowment. The Foundation continues its endowment challenge with matches of up to $1.25 million in 2020 and $1.25 million in 2021.

In addition, Linda Dresner and Ed Levy Jr. joined the DSO Founding Families with an extraordinary $5 million pledge to the endowment. All told, 2018-2019 saw remarkable growth in the endowment, with more than $6 million raised against a $5 million fiscal year goal. EXPANDING PARTNERSHIPS Several of our most meaningful collaborations evolved and expanded in 20182019. The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation announced a new $20 million investment in the arts in Detroit, including an additional $2.5 million to the DSO to support multidisciplinary programming, community-focused additions to our cultural campus, and technology improvements.
William Davidson Neighborhood Concert Series
We also continued an important partnership with the FCA Foundation to better serve U.S. military, veterans, and their families through ticket discounts and performances at local VA hospitals; the number of patrons reached more than doubled from the program’s first year to its second. DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION Thanks to the support of the League of American Orchestras’ Catalyst Fund, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Paul M. Angell Family Foundation, the DSO has begun a journey towards deepening our understanding of the DSO’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) needs and goals. Our DEI work includes a strategic plan; partnerships with DEI practitioners; and training for staff, musicians, and board members.
