MAKING A DIFFERENCE
PARTNERING WITH PNC’S GROW UP GREAT INITIATIVE AND THE BLACKWELL INSTITUTE Last spring, the DSO went to students and students went to the DSO. In a unique partnership with Detroit Public Schools Community District’s Blackwell Institute and PNC Bank’s Grow Up Great Initiative, we were able to bring music to preschool children right in their classrooms—and invite them to the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center for a Tiny Tots concert. Over two weeks in April, about 40 Blackwell Institute students were visited by DSO staff and musicians and given an opportunity to get hands-on with some instruments, including violin, viola, guitar, bass, flute, horn, and oboe. We also provided teachers with curriculum ideas to prepare for the DSO visits and keep the music going with interactive learning experiences in the classroom. “Exposure and experiences are both necessary to spark the passion for music that leads to transformational impact on the healthy development of young people,” says Anne Parsons, DSO President and CEO. “When instruments are held and teams are created, responsibility, discipline, and acumen soar!” Visits like these are a true privilege for our community-supported orchestra. We know that music education empowers our children to be more creative, productive, sensitive, and confident. From a modest athome hobby to passionate involvement in an 20

ensemble, playing music can truly make the world a better place by making us all better people—no matter what age or ZIP Code. As a Detroit cultural anchor, we are proud to be active and responsible ambassadors of music and the arts in communities across the region. It’s not a bonus. It’s part of who we are. And we are so thrilled to partner with PNC’s Grow Up Great initiative, which aims to help children develop a passion for learning that lasts a lifetime. Since PNC began the program in 2004, Grow Up Great has distributed more than $105 million in grants that help young children prepare for school by focusing on readiness in vocabulary development, math, science, financial education, and the arts. Through these grants to nonprofit organizations, the program has impacted approximately 2.3 million children nationwide. Stay tuned for more news about this amazing partnership—we plan to increase the number of preschool classrooms we visit from two to fourteen in the 2016-2017 Season.
FALL/WINTER 2016-2017
E
ver since Home Alone appeared, it has held a unique place in the affections of a very broad public. Director Chris Columbus brought a uniquely fresh and innocent approach to this delightful story, and the film has deservedly become a perennial at Holiday time. I took great pleasure in composing the score for the film, and I am especially delighted that the magnificent Detroit Symphony Orchestra has agreed to perform the music in a live presentation of the movie. I know I speak for everyone connected with the making of the film in saying that we are greatly honored by this event… and I hope that tonight’s audience will experience the renewal of joy that the film brings with it, each and every year.
John Williams
JOHN WILLIAMS
I
n a career spanning five decades, John Williams has become one of America’s most accomplished and successful composers for film and for the concert stage, and he remains one of our nation’s most distinguished and contributive musical voices. He has composed the music for more than one hundred films, including all seven Star Wars films, the first three Harry Potter films, Superman, Memoirs of a Geisha, Home Alone, and The Book Thief. His 40year artistic partnership with director Steven Spielberg has resulted in many of Hollywood’s most acclaimed and successful films, including Schindler’s List, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the Indiana Jones films, Saving Private Ryan, and Lincoln. Mr. Williams has composed themes for four Olympic Games. He served as music director of the Boston

Pops Orchestra for 14 seasons and remains their Laureate Conductor. He has composed numerous works for the concert stage including two symphonies, and concertos commissioned by many of America’s most prominent orchestras. Mr. Williams has received five Academy Awards and 50 Oscar nominations (making him the secondmost nominated person in the history of the Oscars), seven British Academy Awards, 22 Grammys, four Golden Globes, and five Emmys. In 2003, he received the Olympic Order (the IOC’s highest honor) for his contributions to the Olympic movement. In 2004, he received the Kennedy Center Honor, and in 2009 he received the National Medal of Arts, the highest award given to artists by the U.S. Government. In 2016 he received the 44th Life Achievement Award from the American Film Institute — the first time a composer was honored with this award. DSO PERFORMANCE MAGA ZINE 23

program notes Variations on a Theme of Joseph Haydn, Op. 56a JOHANNES BRAHMS B. May 7, 1833, Hamburg, Germany D. April 3, 1897, Vienna, Austria Scored for 2 flutes, piccolo, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani, and strings. (Approx. 19 minutes)
A
s compared with his more progressive, even revolutionary moments, Brahms’ Haydn Variations reveal the conservative, backwardslooking side of the composer. These variations are strict in the sense that each one (save the finale) has an exact proportional correspondence to the theme. While reverting to this style was somewhat anachronistic — considering the more radical variations written by Brahms’ contemporaries — the composer was nevertheless able to provide his own unique mark on a traditional genre. In a strict set of variations, the theme provides the structural basis for what is subsequently heard, particularly how the phrases are shaped. The theme for this set was based on the “Chorale St. Antoni,” which Brahms attributed to Haydn — although many scholars have since doubted this, leading some to refer to the work as the Saint Anthony Variations. This charming melody must have fascinated Brahms in large part because of its five-bar phrase rhythm, as opposed to the much more common four-bar phrase. The theme itself reveals an overall three-part structure: an opening theme for ten bars (which is repeated), a contrasting middle section of eight dso.org
bars, and then a reprise of the opening theme (after which these final two sections are repeated as a unit). This clear delineation of sections provides the listener with a precise map for following the ensuing variations. The first variation introduces a brilliant technique that is employed in many of the later ones as well: the opening melody in the violins is accompanied by a counter-melody in the lower strings, and in the sixth bar the two melodies switch places, so that the cellos play the melody while the counter-melody is in the upper strings. This kind of flip-flopping of the melodies, known as invertible counterpoint, reaches back to earlier compositional practice of the Baroque era. The technique is repeated in the third, fourth, fifth, and seventh variations, as well as the finale, where Brahms employs a ground bass that is repeated throughout until the close. The DSO most recently performed Brahms’ Variations on a Theme by Haydn — conducted by Leonard Slatkin — in February 2016, during the Brahms Festival. The DSO first performed the work in March 1917 with Westin Gales conducting.
Tangos Concertantes LALO SCHIFRIN B. June 21, 1932, Buenos Aires, Argentina Scored for solo violin, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, timpani, percussion, harp, and strings. (Approx. 28 minutes)

he Argentinian composer Lalo Schifrin is well-known for his jazz, DSO PERFORMANCE MAGA ZINE 33
program notes television, and movie scores, which have earned him four Grammy Awards and six Academy Award nominations. You may not know Schifrin, but you certainly know his work — he has provided music for landmark films and television shows in a variety of genres and styles, including Bullitt, Dirty Harry, Magnum Force, The Amityville Horror, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Starsky and Hutch, and many more, and he is the genius behind “Theme from Mission: Impossible,” one of the most recognizable pieces of music in modern popular culture. His arrangements of both jazz and orchestral music have been performed by artists as diverse as Cannonball Adderly, The Three Tenors, Stan Getz, Maurice André, and more. He has also recorded more than 30 solo albums of jazz, bossa nova, disco, symphonic music, and various crossovers of the genres he has mastered. But before Schifrin’s name graced movie posters and the liner notes of bestselling albums, he was a pianist for his fellow Argentine Astor Piazzolla, the megastar of tango. Learning the insistent rhythm and tender tonality of the tango idiom was hugely important for Schifrin, who would find ways to blend the style into his compositions. Tangos Concertantes, written for ChoLiang Lin, brings this thread to the concert hall. These performances of Schifrin’s Tangos Concertantes — in Orchestra Hall and in various Metro Detroit venues as part of the William Davidson Neighborhood Concert Series — will be DSO premieres.

Overture to The Bartered Bride ˇ ICH SMETANA BEDR
B. March 2, 1824, Litomyšl, Bohemia (now Czech Republic) D. May 12, 1884, Prague, Bohemia (now Czech Republic) Scored for 2 flutes, piccolo, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, timpani, and strings. (Approx. 7 minutes)
T
he Bohemian composer Bedrˇich Smetana is considered the father of Czech opera, a rather notable accomplishment given that Czech was not his first language. Born under Hapsburg rule, Smetana was schooled first in German, and only later in life was he able to study his hereditary tongue. In fact, when he was working on his second opera, he used a German translation of the text as an aid in composition. The Bartered Bride, which might more aptly be titled The Sold Bride, relates a comic tale of love and trickery. In brief, Marenka is in love with Jenik, but her parents plan to wed her to the son of Micha, a local landlord. Unknown to all but himself, Jenik is Micha’s long-lost son. Jenik allows the marriage broker to buy him off for a high price, but exacts a condition that Marenka be wed to “The eldest son of Micha.” The broker agrees, thinking that Micha has only one son, but all ends happily when Jenik’s true heritage is revealed. Overtures to operas are usually written almost as afterthoughts, but Smetana was so taken with the story that he wrote the lively prelude before beginning any other work on the FALL/WINTER 2016-2017
program notes opera. The result is a piece that stands alone beautifully, yet still serves as a wonderful introduction to the work that made Smetana famous. — Geoff Kuenning, 1999 The DSO most recently performed the Overture to The Bartered Bride in September 1990, with Leslie B. Dunner conducting. The DSO first performed the work in January 1919, with Ossip Gabrilowitsch conducting.
Symphony No. 5 in D, Op. 107 (“Reformation”) FELIX MENDELSSOHN B. February 3, 1809, Hamburg, Germany D. November 4, 1847, Leipzig, Germany Scored for 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, timpani, and strings. (Approx. 31 minutes)
B
orn into a wealthy and cultured family, Felix Mendelssohn was a gifted child whom the finest musicians of the day hailed as a second Mozart. By the time young Felix had reached his mid-teens, he had composed an astonishing number of mature works, including 12 string symphonies and his first symphony for full orchestra, written when he was just 15. In 1825 he produced the remarkable Octet for Strings, and the year after that came the Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream. As if his purely musical talents were not enough, he was a highly skilled organizer and administrator — raising performance standards at the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, of which he became conductor in 1835, and founding and directing the Leipzig Conservatory. He was a

major figure in the revival of interest in Bach’s music, which at that time was almost unknown to the general public, and was responsible for presenting the first public performance of the St. Matthew Passion since Bach’s death in 1750. He visited England on numerous occasions where he was treated with great adulation by the public, enjoyed praise by the press, and became a great favorite of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Mendelssohn’s so-called “Reformation” Symphony was as close to program music as anything he wrote. Although it is called No. 5, it was actually his second fullorchestra symphony in order of composition, and was intended to honor the 300th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession of 1530, a document written by a committee which contained the main tenets of the Lutheran faith. Not only was the anniversary a celebration of the original document, it was also an attempt by King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia to unify Calvinists and Lutherans into a single Protestant liturgy, thereby strengthening its political influence against the Catholic church. It was Mendelssohn himself who gave the symphony the provisional title of “Reformation,” and although the work was never published in his lifetime, the title stayed with it. Work on the symphony began in December of 1829, before the King had even announced the tercentenary celebrations, and Mendelssohn intended to complete the work the following January so it could be performed at the festivities in Berlin that June. Unfortunately, ill health resulted in the symphony taking much longer to complete than he DSO PERFORMANCE MAGA ZINE 35
had anticipated. He finally completed the symphony in May, but by then it was too late for the Augsburg Commission to include the work in their celebrations. After a planned performance in Paris fell through the following year because the orchestra rejected it as “too scholarly,” Mendelssohn finally did premiere the revised symphony in 1832 under the title “Symphony to Celebrate the Church Revolution,” but he withdrew it immediately thereafter, quietly shelving it and regarding it with contempt for the rest of his short life. Not only did Mendelssohn dislike the symphony, he actually stated once that he would rather burn the manuscript than see it published, later referring to it as “…a gross, bristly animal; an effective cure for a weak stomach; a complete misfit and a piece of juvenilia.” As a result, the work was not published until 1868 by his close friend Julius Rietz and his son Paul. This explains why the symphony was so badly misnumbered, as it was published last among his five true symphonies. The real order of the five, with regard to their composition, is No.1, No. 5 (“Reformation”), No. 4 (“Italian”), No. 2 (“Lobgesang”), and No. 3 (“Scottish”). From a purely musical standpoint, any real link to the Reformation is quite weak, and there are only two symbolic elements in the entire score. One is the “Dresden Amen,” a short but intense setting of the word “Amen” written in the late 18th century by a composer named J.G. Naumann, and whose popularity was so great that it was used in both Protestant and Catholic churches during the 18th and 19th centuries; and the chorale “Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott” (“A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”), on which the finale is 36
DSO PERFORMANCE MAGA ZINE
based. This is the best-known of Martin Luther’s chorales, and was also a favorite of Bach’s. There is thus ample justification of the idea that it was Bach, and not the Augsburg Confession, which really inspired this symphony, as there are a few melodies in the work which have a quasi-Baroque cast to them, as if Mendelssohn was creating music in the spirit of the great master. The symphony begins with a solemn introduction in D major, and after the first statement of the “Dresden Amen” the Allegro section begins in D minor, thus reversing the usual Classical key relations. The brief but lively Scherzo (here placed second rather than third) is somewhere between a march and a dance, with fragments of the “Amen” appearing throughout. The equally short slow movement is full of mournful and conflicting emotions, and as it fades away on an unexpectedly major chord, a solo flute begins the finale with the familiar Martin Luther chorale. This was no accident, as it was well known that Luther was himself a competent flute player. This last movement is unique in the symphonic repertoire, as it holds two introductory sections — both based on the chorale — which launch the main musical material, containing both transformations of the “Amen” and snippets of the chorale weaving in and out of the texture. Finally, the chorale appears in triumphant majesty, bringing the symphony to its dignified and powerful conclusion. The DSO most recently performed Mendelssohn’s “Reformation” Symphony in November 2002, with Emmanuel Krivine conducting. The DSO first performed the work in November 1939, with Wilfrid Pelletier conducting. FALL/WINTER 2016-2017

NOTABLE PROJECT SUPPORT The Detroit Symphony Orchestra acknowledges the following partners for their support of exceptional projects, partnerships, and performances that boldly advance the DSO’s mission to be a leader in the world of classical music. The Eugene and Marcia Applebaum Family Foundation helped the DSO expand our partnership with our neighbors at Wayne State University, providing access to DSO Replay for students, exhibiting works from the WSU Art Collection, and creating the Applebaum Fellowship program. The Arab American National Museum partnered with the DSO to present the 24th annual Concert of Colors, a five-day festival uniting metro Detroit’s diverse communities and ethnic groups by presenting musical acts from around the world.

Mr. and Mrs. Lee Barthel established a maintenance fund, supporting capital improvements which generate long-term savings for the DSO - including essential improvements to the exterior masonry of Orchestra Hall. The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation made a gift to support the production of a video that chronicles the DSO’s digital journey and celebrates how people across the world experience the DSO. The National Endowment for the Arts funded an educational expansion of DSO Replay - the online archive for past webcast performances - which will include the creation of additional web-only content, artist interviews, behindthe-scenes features, specialized search functions and more.

New Music USA and the League of American Orchestras brought our composer-in-residence, Gabriela Lena Frank, to Detroit through their Music Alive program as a part of their ongoing support of orchestra efforts to promote and present new music. Mark and Janice Uhlig, Norm and Janet Ankers, and Rick and Cathy Walker of Arkay-Walker Paint Co. supported renovations to the office once occupied by Ossip Gabrilowitsch on the second floor of Orchestra Hall, creating a special dining space for donors and friends.
