Multicultural Exploration “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes. Marcel Proust

Remote support A remote control is an electronic device, most commonly used for operating a television wirelessly from a distance.

Every remote team manager, and business men who work in a close relationship with partners from different countries, dream to have similar remote control for their team sitting in different parts of the world. This is where everything starts going wrong! You don’t need a remote control device – you rather need a remote support set for this. This means that the manager will himself have the right buttons like “knowledge, tools and techniques” to adjust to various settings i.e “communication, technology, processes and cultural differences within his team”

in order to manage, lead and em power his remote team effectively. This is what our new program is about.

Why is this topic important in a holistic view? If we take a macro view, we realize that remote teams are not just limi足 ted to a particular organization or project internal to an organization, but all these organizations across the globe are equivalent to these teams working with each other. Remote teams can be viewed as key elements in making globaliza足 tion possible. We say that the world is becoming smaller. Now if we observe at a very grass root level, then these teams are interacting with each other due to which the companies are able to provide various kinds of products, services, facilities to people all across the world. This is the reason why these teams are so important.

This is why remote teams are the way of the future. And this is why we have to take tremendous efforts to make sure that these teams function to the best of their best ability and interest. In our newly developed program package, we have put special emphasis on this new and spreading phenomenon sharing knowledge, forming attitude and skills, and offering practical solutions for leaders managing remote teams, and for colleagues working more efficiently in multicultural environment.

Culture Shock Kalvero Oberg, Canadian anthropologist coined the term Culture Shock to describe the problems faced by people who go from one culture to another. He revealed the consequences, i.e., the personal problems that people face, both psychological and psychosomatic, in moving to other cultures. Culture shock has become perhaps the most accepted construct to describe the emotional stress experienced by sojourners while they are working with people from other cultures. It also affects those who work only virtually, for example as an employee of a Service Center, in a multicultural environment working just via telephone and e-mails every day.

What questions do such situations raise? How to support my team from a distance? How to handle miscommunication, misunderstanding and cultural illiteracy due to cultural differences? How to involve and support subordinates who are far away locally? How to establish trustful and easyworking environment? How to ensure smooth and personal relationships between the colleagues? How to manage and organize work and workflow? What processes to follow in remote team co-operation?

Our solution: The Multicultural Exploration Program We aim not just to tell you these differences but to give you new eyes: an exploration that helps you identify these differences on your own and perceive them as an opportunity to learn and explore. We believe that intercultural competence should be understood as part of knowledge management and company-specific tacit knowledge. It should be understood as a tool of strategic thinking and planning, as a source of competitive advantage and added value that builds on the benefits of diverse approaches. The development of these skills and competences should be started as early as possible to establish this

culture within the organization, to create the “Remote Supportâ€? tool. The program includes development elements for both the leaders and the emplo yees of multicultural teams customized for their specific conditions and needs. The most interesting part of the package is that it was created in a multicultural environment by a remote team. Throughout its development, we had an opportunity to ourselves to try and test all the concepts, tools and techniques that are incorporated in this program.

Why Develor? Develor has a network coverage and experience in 20+ countries. This means managing, supporting and leading people from different countries with different languages and cultural backgrounds. This has brought with itself a set of challenges which result from working remotely and in a multicultural team environment. The experience and the expertise gained from it make us competent in this subject.

Multicultural Exploration Program Managing Remote Teams Remoteness brings in a new set of challenges for leaders to direct, control, support and motivate their team members. The program provides efficient communi cation and collaboration tools for leaders. Multicultural Communication The understanding and the conscious adatation to the cultural preferences, patterns and norms will significantly contribute to the success of multicultural teams by preventing conflicts, increasing comfort level and creating trust. Multicultural Negotiation Researching and preparing for the partner’s cultural environment and local customs create more beneficial position during the negotiations. While the knowledge of the cultural context about the interests and motivations of the other party will bring better deals for the organization.

Personal Effectiveness in Remote Working Environment ‘Efficiency is doing things right; effectiveness is doing the right things.’ The understanding of this difference and optimizing one’s time management and personal effectiveness skills in remote environment will increase significantly the individual and thus the organizational performance. Assertive Communication via e-mails and phone Communication is so critical that it can make or break a team. E-mails and conference calls are almost the only ways of communication within the arena of a remote environment, therefore it is essential to be aware of the barriers, and to acquire guidelines and practical hints of working via these channels.
