La Región de Murcia goza de una ubicación geográfica inmejorable para la agricultura. Unas temperaturas cálidas, más de 2.800 horas de sol al año y unas precipitaciones medias anuales en torno a los 200 litros por metro cuadrado. A esto se unen unos suelos fértiles y ricos en nutrientes.
El sector agrícola regional, con gran tradición y a la vanguardia de la tecnología se ha diversificado y dedica parte de sus hectáreas a la agricultura ecológica, entendiendo por ésta aquella basada en el respeto a los ciclos naturales de las plantas y que no utiliza productos químicos tóxicos agresivos. En valores relativos (24.683 has. de cultivo ecológico, el 4,16% del total de Superficie Agraria Útil) es la tercera comunidad española en cultivo ecológico. Pionera en la producción de frutas y hortalizas, arroz, uva, almendras y cereales, sus productos se exportan a numerosos países europeos.

Parte del auge experimentado por la agricultura ecológica se ha debido a un cambio en los hábitos de los consumidores que cada vez más buscan alimentos naturales libres de productos químicos y más saludables. La preocupación por el medio ambiente también ha contribuido a fomentar este tipo de agricultura que además conserva e incrementa la biodiversidad.

Warm temperatures, more than 2,800 hours of sun each year and over 200 l/m2 of annual rainfall, together with fertile land rich in nutrients, makes the Murcia Region an ideal place for agriculture.
Employing both traditional methods and the latest agricultural technology, regional farming has diversified and is now involved in organic farming. This new type of farming is based on a respect for the natural cycle of plants and does not use harmful or toxic chemicals. In relative terms (24,683 hectares of organic cultivation, 4.16% of the Total Arable Farmland) Murcia is the third largest region in Spain in terms of organically-managed farmland and is a pioneer in the production of organic fruits, vegetables, rice, grapes, almonds and grains which are exported to a number of European countries.

Part of the increase in organic farming is due to the change in people's eating habits. Nowadays consumers want healthier natural foods that have not been subjected to any kind of chemical treatment. Concern for the environment has also contributed to the growth of this type of bio-diverse, environmentally-friendly agriculture.
Tejido empresarial Business Fabric LA AGRICULTURA COMO ÁREA DE NEGOCIO Y OPORTUNIDAD Aunque son ya cerca de 25.000 las hectáreas dedicadas al cultivo ecológico, no existe en la Región de Murcia un tejido productivo exclusivo de esta modalidad, si no que se trata más bien de una especialización por la que los empresarios del sector agrícola y alimentario han optado. La existencia de un mercado exterior europeo que cada vez demanda más estos productos; una legislación europea que ha regulado y certificado estas prácticas junto a una mayor rentabilidad para el agricultor, ha llevado a muchos empresarios a considerar la agricultura ecológica como un área de negocio. Así, en menos de 12 años se ha multiplicado por 87 la superficie dedicada a agricultura ecológica.
AGRICULTURE AS A BUSINESS VENTURE Even though there are now almost 25,000 hectares of organically-managed farmland in Murcia, there is no specific production fabric for this type of farming in the Region. The approach is more one of an area of specialization that some business people in the farming industry have chosen. The increased demand for organic foods in Europe, European legislation regulating and certifying organic farming practices, and greater profits for farmers have convinced many entrepreneurs that organic farming has a great deal of business potential. In less than 12 years, the amount of organically-managed farmland has multiplied by 87.
Los niveles de facturación de la agricultura ecológica se sitúan entorno a los 60 millones de euros anuales, destinándose el 90% de la producción a la exportación. Alemania, Francia y Reino Unido son los principales receptores de nuestros productos. Annual sales of organic foods have reached some 60 million euros, with 90% being exported, with the largest amount of products commercialized in Germany, France and the United Kingdom.

Distribución geográfica y variedades Geographic distribution and variety La gran variedad de productos existentes en la agricultura ecológica es uno de sus principales elementos diferenciadores, debido a los numerosos microclimas que existen en las diferentes comarcas de la Región y que marcan las pautas de distribución de los cultivos. Puede afirmarse con seguridad que de casi todos los productos que se cultivan en agricultura convencional hay una versión ecológica. Esta diversidad se ha debido también a la intensa actividad del cluster de la industria alimentaria que ha sabido aprovechar los avances tecnológicos para dinamizar el sector. Otra de sus características es el máximo control de los procesos productivos, lo que garantiza la trazabilidad del producto desde su origen y la máxima seguridad e higiene alimentaria.

One of the things that best defines and differentiates organic farming from other types of farming in Murcia is the wide variety of crops that can be cultivated given the microclimates found in the region which regulate crop distribution. There is an organic alternative for virtually every traditionally cultivated crop. This diversity is also due to the intense activity of the food industry cluster which has taken full advantage of advances in technology to revitalize the sector. Another important characteristic of this type of farming is the careful control of production which makes it possible to trace a product from its very origins and ensure the highest level of hygiene and product safety.

Las características climáticas de la Región de Murcia facilitan la obtención de una vid de gran calidad y variedad sin ningún tipo de dificultad a la hora de evitar productos químicos. Además, la vid es un cultivo que se autoprotege gracias a su alcohol natural. El reto de los productores murcianos se halla sin embargo en el mayor control de la producción y la necesaria inversión que hay que hacer en las instalaciones para adaptarse al sistema de producción ecológica, como tener unas dimensiones determinadas y estar a cierta distancia de otras fincas donde se utilicen productos químicos, disponer de tolvas especiales o utilizar procesos de fermentación naturales. Aunque muchas bodegas y empresas regionales tienen su propia línea de vino ecológico, el sector está compuesto por pequeñas y medianas empresas, cuyos vinos, casi artesanales, son muy apreciados dentro y fuera de nuestro país, y que ha visto como en los últimos años sus niveles de facturación crecían considerablemente. La variedad más utilizada es la monastrell, de la que se obtienen vinos afrutados y de alta calidad.
The climate of the Region of Murcia facilitates the chemical-free cultivation of a variety of high quality grapes, a crop that also enjoys a certain degree of immunity from problems due to its natural alcohol content.Therefore, the challenge for Murcian farmers is to carefully control production and invest in the facilities and installations they need to convert their farms to organic production. Issues to be considered might include size, distance from farms that use chemical fertilizers, the availability of special hoppers and chutes and the use of natural fermentation processes. Even though many wineries and regional businesses market organic wines, most producers are small and medium-sized companies whose artisan wines are highly valued in Spain and abroad with sales that have skyrocketed over the last few years. The most popular grape variety is Monastrell, used to produce high-quality wines that have a lovely, fruity flavor.
Por hectáreas, es el cultivo de frutos secos, en especial el almendro, el que más dedica al cultivo ecológico (32,08% de la superficie), seguidos de los cereales y el viñedo. Las frutas y hortalizas, aunque suponen sólo el 7,69% son sin duda los cultivos que mayor auge han experimentado en los últimos años. Por comarcas es la del Altiplano con diferencia la que mayor producción alberga (37%). En la Región de Murcia operan en la actualidad 940 empresas en el sector de la agricultura ecológica, de las que 151 son industrias elaboradoras y 755, agricultores (hay 4 importadores).
Nuts and dried fruit, mainly almonds, are the most important organic crop in terms of hectares, (32.08% of farming land), followed by cereals and vineyards. Although fruits and vegetables are a mere 7.69%, they are the products with the largest growth over the last few years. The plateau region is by far the one with the largest number of crops (37%). There are currently 940 companies in the organic farming sector of the Murcia Region, 151 of which are producers and 755 farmers (4 importers). 5
Frutas y hortalizas Fruits and vegetables Las frutas y hortalizas junto a los frutos secos, la vid y los olivares, son el cultivo ecológico más importante en la Región de Murcia. Se trata de un sector tradicional de nuestra agricultura y que conocen muy bien tanto agricultores como la industria alimentaria de transformación y conservas. Aunque en un principio su comercialización se ceñía a pequeñas tiendas y asociaciones de consumidores, las grandes superficies han entrado poco a poco en los canales de comercialización y han incorporado en sus lineales productos ecológicos por lo que los proveedores habituales los han incluido en su oferta. En el caso de los países centroeuropeos, donde el consumo es mayor, los productos ecológicos suponen el 10% de los productos frescos.

La almendra es también uno de los productos que tiene gran importancia dentro de la producción ecológica regional. Además de ser un cultivo de secano, idóneo para el clima murciano, presenta mayores facilidades que otros, al ser el producto final la semilla y estar protegida de plagas.
Pionero en la obtención de la certificación de producto ecológico, el arroz ecológico murciano se cultiva en Calasparra y presenta unas cualidades de sabor y textura que lo hacen único. Su ciclo de cultivo viene dictado por el Consejo Regulador y se consume durante todo el año. Goza de una gran demanda dentro y fuera de nuestra Región y se presenta en dos variedades integral y semintegral.
Almonds are one of the most important organic crops in our region. In addition to being a dry farming crop ideal for the Murcian climate, it is easy to produce and harvest given that the final product is a seed that is naturally protected from plagues and infestations.

The most important organic crops in the Region of Murcia are fruits and vegetables, nuts, grapes and olives. These are traditional items well-known to farmers, food processors and canners alike. At first, organic foods were sold in small specialized shops and through consumer associations, but large supermarkets and food outlets have gradually added organic foods to their product lines, prompting suppliers to expand their offerings. For example, in Central European countries where consumption of organic foods is high, a full 10% of fresh produce comes from organically-managed farms.
In Murcia, organic rice, unique in flavor and texture, is cultivated in Calasparra. It was one of the first products in the Region to be certified as an organic food. The cultivation cycle of rice is regulated by the appropriate authorities, and rice is consumed throughout the year. Varieties of both brown and white rice are in high demand within our Region and beyond our borders.
Pimentón Paprika El cultivo del pimentón, de gran tradición en la Región de Murcia, al tener un proceso de elaboración (desecado y molido) bastante artesanal, presenta pocas dificultades en su versión ecológica. El pimentón ecológico murciano se cultiva principalmente en la Comarca del Valle del Guadalentín y se presenta de dos formas: dulce y picante. Paprika is one of the traditional products of the Region of Murcia. The artisanal methods used to dry and grind this crop can be easily adapted to organic practices. Sweet and spicy varieties of organic paprika are mainly grown in the Valle del Guadalentín area.
Aceite Olive oil
Al igual que ocurre con la almendra, el cultivo de la aceituna es un cultivo que se adapta muy bien a las condiciones climáticas de la Región de Murcia, al ser un fruto resistente a las plagas y que soporta bien la no utilización de fertilizantes y productos químicos. En la Región se produce Aceite de Oliva Virgen y Aceite de Oliva Virgen Extra ecológicos, procedentes de fincas y almazaras certificadas. Su consumo en nuestro país ha crecido considerablemente. As is true of almonds, olives adapt very well to the climatic conditions in the Region of Murcia. Olives are plague-resistant and prosper without the use of fertilizers or chemicals. Organic olive oil and organic virgin olive oil are both produced in the region by certified olive growers and millers. Consumption of these products has grown considerably in Spain in the last few years.
Miel Honey La producción de miel ecológica en la Región presenta como elemento diferenciador una elaboración basada sólo en la exposición a calentamiento y filtrado para la separación de impurezas, sin la utilización de productos químicos ni aditivos. In Murcia, the only process the organic honey undergoes is heating and filtering in order to eliminate impurities. No chemicals or additives of any kind are used.

Conservas, preparados alimenticios y cremogenados Canned goods, processed foods and fruit derivatives La industria conservera y alimentaria, con gran peso en la economía murciana, también se ha visto influida por el auge de los productos ecológicos y ha recuperado gracias a esta tendencia formas tradicionales de conserva y envasado que se han perfeccionado gracias a las innovaciones introducidas en el campo de la tecnología de los alimentos. Ésta ha dado lugar a una gran variedad de productos, más sanos y naturales, obtenidos a partir de pulpa de frutas y hortalizas ecológicas, en el caso de las mermeladas, confituras y conservas vegetales. El sector de la alimentación infantil y los alimentos dietéticos también se ha desarrollado mucho gracias a la agricultura ecológica.
Thanks to the increase in organic foods, the canning and food industries, important contributors to the Murcian economy, have returned to some of the more traditional methods of preserving and canning foods and perfected these systems using innovations in food technology. This has led to the production of healthier natural foods made from the pulp of organic fruits and vegetables such as marmalades, preserves and canned vegetables. The baby food and diet foods industries have also experienced great growth and development thanks to organic farming.
Zumos Juices La industria de los zumos ecológicos tiene en la Región de Murcia un papel muy importante y es una de las que mejor acogida está teniendo en el mercado nacional, con producciones que oscilan entre los 350.000 y los 550.000 litros anuales, en el caso de las empresas más importantes. Se trata de líquidos extraídos directamente de frutos certificados como ecológicos y cuyo aporte vitamínico es mayor que el de los zumos convencionales.
Organic fruit juices produced in Murcia are very popular nationwide. Production levels for several of the larger enterprises that make up this important industry has now reached some 350,000 to 550,000 liters per year. These juices come from organically certified fruit and offer higher vitamin content than conventional juices.

Lucha biológica Biological fight La necesidad de controlar de manera natural las plagas en los cultivos evitando el uso de insecticidas y productos químicos tóxicos ha llevado al desarrollo de una potente industria dedicada a lo que se ha venido en llamar como lucha biológica, que no es otra cosa que el control biológico de las plagas. Parte de su filosofía se basa en la llamada producción integrada que trata de aprovechar al máximo los recursos de la naturaleza de manera que se emplee el menor número de insumos. Las granjas de insectos, ácaros y microorganismos que hay en la Región de Murcia para el control de plagas son un buen ejemplo de ello.
The need for natural plague control methods that do not involve the use of insecticides or toxic chemicals has spurred the creation of a powerful movement which has come to be known as the "biological fight" which is nothing more than the biological control of plagues and infestations. Its philosophy is partly based on the concept known as integrated production which attempts to make maximum use of natural resources so that the use of other agents is kept to a minimum. For example, Murcia has several insect, mite and microorganism farms which are used for plague control.
