2013 - the year of our young leaders One Statistic that many people don’t know that is on average a parent leader will stay within Scouting for between 2 and 3 years, but a person who has come up through the young leader scheme on average stays between 8 and 10 years after they have finished their own Scouting.

Last year over 10,000 young people across the UK transferred from young leaders into assisting with their local group.

So with the young leader camp coming up in February it seems a good time to celebrate this powerful resource.

To find out more about how young leaders can get involved with your group contact Andy Ellis at andyellis@devonscouts.org.uk

YOUNG LEADERS?

The Young Leaders' Scheme is just one of the exciting programme elements in the Explorer Scout section. All leaders in the Beaver Scout, Cub Scout and Scout Section who are between the ages of 14 and 18 must be members of an Explorer Scout Young Leaders' Unit. They are Explorer Scouts who choose to devote a large proportion of their time in Scouting to service in another section.

The Young Leaders' Scheme helps Explorer Scouts to develop and grow as individuals. It allows them to make a valuable contribution to their community and give service to others. The scheme also helps them fulfil the service elements of their awards. Find out more online http://members.scouts.org.uk/supportresources/search/?cat=9,98

s d n a L o t s t a o r G O o t r u o John y g n i v a e l t u o h t wi

At just after 5pm on Saturday 13th October, a large group of slightly soggy , Explorers, Scouts, Cubs, Beavers, parents, supporters and Leaders trouped across the finish line in Broad Street, Ottery St Mary. The ‘Walk the Golden Mile” event having helped the Ottery St Mary Scout Group reach their target of collectively walking 803 miles during their Hikeathon event – the equivalent distance between Land’s End and John O’Groats.

The sponsored event was planned as part of the fund raising project to raise £90,000 to fund the building and upgrading of facilities at the Scout Centre. The project

includes providing disabled access and facilities, as well as offered the group and the wider community additional space for existing activities and to welcome new members and users.

The Hikeathon started on Monday with the Beavers and Cubs undertaking a joint night hike, racking up 132 miles to get the event off to a flying start. The Scouts and Explorers kept the ball rolling on Friday night hiking until midnight, by which time the group had collectively walked 355 miles – effectively reaching Preston in Lancashire.

20 Scout ’n’ about www.devonscouts.org.uk

Saturday saw the Explorers and Scouts, tired and with sore feet from the night before, hit the road again at 8.30am. Many of the young p e o p l e completed several hikes during the day to knock off the miles towards their target. They were walking in groups along preplanned routes they selected. The weekend’s activities were being coordinated from a operations headquarters in Ottery town square with a large map and display for passersby to track the progress and chat about the event.

Each of the walking groups was armed with a donations bucket for the project and the local community gave generously towards the cause. Running in parallel, the Cubs and Beavers were running a bag pack at Sainsbury’s in Ottery to raise more money for the event and to publicise the project and the activity.

“When we hit 2.30pm we were a bit worried, because we were still a long way short of the Scottish border,” said Scout Leader Chris Evans. “But the young people kept racking up the miles and by the end of the event, we had

OSM

s E nd own. some very tired young people on ours hands. By the time we came to the “Walk the Golden Mile “ event at 4pm, we only had about 100 miles to do and with so many people turning up to help us, we easily achieved our goal. But now we’re all stuck in the North of Scotland - metaphorically speaking of course!”

Far from being stuck, the Scouts have now passed the £50,000 marker towards their target goal of £90,000 required for the build project. “We are not quite sure how much this event has raised,” said Dawn Offer-Hoar, part of the fund raising team for the project “as we are still collecting the sponsor money but the donations and bag pack have raised nearly £1,000. “

Scout Group Leader John Green commented ”It’s a great tribute to all our young people who have taken this challenge on with great enthusiasm. I spent a great deal of time on the Saturday at the operations headquarters and it was great hearing from

previous members of their time in scouting” John went onto add “ An event like this takes weeks of planning and a big thanks goes to Chris Evans (Scout Leader) for the idea and the work in making it happen and also to all the parents and supporters who turned out during the event, with over 100 people walking the Golden Mile.

The Jose and Leonard Beavers entered the Our Sporting Adventure which the Scouting Association ran between the 1 Jan and 30 Sept this year.

T h e y d i d really well and really enjoyed t h e activities for the bronze, silver and gold medals. We came 40th out of the 1412 teams that entered.

As my son Ryan Braunton-Turner carried the Olympic Torch and the sporting adventure challenge was based around the Olympics he came in to see the L e o n a r d Beavers and presented them with a certificate and a special medal of an Olympic Flame being held in someone's hand. They were really pleased as he came in his

Olympic Tracksuit and made the evening really special.

It was even better as he was nominated to carry the Olympic Torch for all that he has done and achieved in his scouting career. Ryan and his sister have just been

awarded their explorer belt buckle for completing there expedition in Denmark this summer. Their video diary was absolutely brilliant.

This is the finishing touch to my sons Scouting career off as he has now completed everything for the Queen Scout Award, and he will be off to join the Army on Feb 3rd next year.

Did you know that Groups from all over Devon during Christmas run their own postal service within their communities at normally a fraction of the price of current Royal mail prices and raised much needed funds for these groups.

In Exeter many of the groups in the District get together to deliver to all of Exeter, and as far afield as Exminster, Broadclyst and Budleigh. All the Scout Groups in Exeter have just finished another record breaking 31st year of delivering

A website or Facebook Page is a great way to share information with customers. Christmas Post having in the last 30 years delivered over 1 million pieces of mail and raised over £130,000 for children’s hospice.

This year it was bigger than ever with the recent hike in postal prices and more focus this year on using local services.

Sue Bendell who is the Scout Christmas Post coordinator having been involved since the start back in 1981 says “Our Christmas post has become a real community event and the local community are very supportive, many stop to have a chat about what

they are getting up to this Christmas and are so glad to see young people providing a much needed and more affordable service”. Sue goes on to say “It could not be simpler for customer we delivered mail all over the Exeter area and had set up Over 70 Christmas post boxes in community halls, local shops and churches for everyone to use, you can drop off your post and leaving a donation of 25p in the box for our Scouts to collect and deliver”

One parent who’s Daughter attends the local group said “My Daughter gets so much

out of Scouting, so I love being able to volunteer and help on occasions such as this, I would love to do more but with my busy work schedule its very hard to find the time. Although helping out with the sorting and delivering has been a lot of fun also, although I do tend to drink a lot of tea and normally don’t want to see another mince pie again by about mid December, but I do really enjoy it, think it shows real community spirit.”

What is great about Young Leaders is when they bring their own creative skills into a section giving it fresh input which is always welcome.

Lauren from Plympton recently made a new inspection board and a new trophy.

Lauren explains “The idea is that the sixes now have a more formal inspection with the results recorded. Then at the end of each month the winning six has their colour ribbon wrapped around the trophy. Gives them something to work towards and be proud of.” A great idea which she has now shared with others on the popular 1st Facebook Scout Group and is now being duplicated across the country.
