Fall 2012

From DeVries Jewelers For the past 111 years, our family has been privileged to serve the Grand Rapids community. As fourth-generation jewelers, we’ve spent more than a century helping customers like you find that special piece to commemorate an important occasion or celebrate that special person. And throughout the years, we’ve come to know you — and many of your family members — as friends. That’s what we love most about what we do! Our customer relationships are invaluable to us, and you continue to bring great joy (and a lot of fun) to our lives. This gratefulness for an amazing community and incredible customers is the reason we’ve created this magazine. Our desire is to offer more than a catalog or postcard sent to your mailbox. We wanted to create a magazine that provides valuable information for everyday living while highlighting other local businesses that delight in serving their West Michigan customers as much as we do. In this inaugural issue, we’re celebrating all things fall. And in our feature story, we invite you to come along with us and enjoy the sites, sounds and tastes of the season at prized local restaurant, Grove. You’ll learn why this East Hills establishment is committed to local, earth-to-table fare and extraordinary customer service.

In our Trends section, local fashion boutique A.K. Rikk’s is teaming up with us to present new fall styles paired with the perfect jewelry. In our Wish List and Inspirations sections, we showcase some of our favorite jewelry lines and offer ideas for holiday gifts. And we always want to offer practical advice when it comes to jewelry, so From the Jeweler includes our own advice on choosing heirloom-quality jewelry you can pass down from one generation to the next. This fall, we hope you’ll spend time enjoying all that our Grand Rapids and West Michigan communities have to offer. It’s a beautiful time of the year to appreciate the brilliant landscape with which we’ve been blessed. And as always, we’d love for you to stop in and see us — whether it’s just to say “hello,” or for help selecting that special piece of jewelry. We look forward to your next visit!

Food/Fashion

All dressed up. With somewhere to go.

The brilliant hues and crisp autumn air synonymous with fall in Grand Rapids offer a picture-perfect backdrop for a night on the town—and an ideal excuse for donning that new outfit with jewelry to match. The destination? Grove restaurant, a Grand Rapids favorite for earth-to-table fare with a laser-focus on fresh, natural ingredients from local, family owned and sustainable farms. With its weekday three-course dinners for $30 and special “Sundays at Grove” for $28, the restaurant fits the bill perfectly for enjoying the sights, sounds and tastes of fall in West Michigan. A COMMITMENT TO LOCAL Located at 919 Cherry Street in Grand Rapids’ bustling East Hills neighborhood, Grove is a relative newcomer to the city’s restaurant scene. James Berg, managing partner of Essence Restaurant Group (which also operates The Green Well and Bistro Bella Vita), says Grove’s “earth-to-table” concept was birthed from the company’s desire to create a restaurant focused on supporting the local food system. “First, we look to get our ingredients locally,” explains Berg. “But if for some reason we’re unable to do so, we then look to family owned or sustainable farms.”

A commitment to giving back to the community, he says, is part of the company’s core philosophy. “It’s in our DNA.” THREE-COURSE DELIGHTS Daily menus at Grove feature three-course dining paired with wines that complement the frequently changing, seasonal menu. Limited craft beers, top-shelf liquors and house-made infused spirits are also served; and pour-over coffee, espresso and teas come from local Waterstreet Coffee Roasters in Kalamazoo. Grove’s intimate, dark-wood interior offers a sophisticated backdrop for its elegant menu, and its handselected serving staff — largely self-proclaimed “foodies” — provides exceptional service. Guests choose from seasonal menu items like heirloom tomato risotto (first course); Farmer Jason’s salad featuring yellow cauliflower, baby greens, peppers, golden raisins, peanuts, breakfast radish and spicy peanut-coconut vinaigrette (second course); and Parisian gnocchi with fall farm vegetables and pumpkin jus (third course). EXPANDING FOOD HORIZONS The reason for multiple courses, according to Berg, is to make the menu more accessible to patrons and allow for them to be a little more adventurous by experimenting with food choices. Couples interested in sampling Grove’s fare are also welcome to split a meal at the bar, or visitors are welcome to order ala carte during the week. “We want our customers to experience the variety of foods available from local Michigan farms and have the opportunity to experiment a little with their food choices,” says Berg. So next time you’re looking for a reason to dress up — and dine — in style, try Grove. ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| < View the behind-the-scenes video and other extras from our photo shoot.

Fall Veggie Love Chef Patrick’s five must-try vegetables: Butternut squash. Great in soups and sauces, or for a twist, purée them to take the place of potatoes. Carrots. One of our favorite dishes is Ingraberg Farm’s carrots prepared five ways. Cauliflower. An under-utilized veggie that adds flavor and texture to dishes. Brussel sprouts. You might have hated them as a kid, but as adults, we love them roasted. Potatoes. You can’t beat buttery potato purée, potato gnocchi with brown butter or fried potatoes tossed in truffle oil and Grassfields Gouda.

Passing it Down You love the idea of owning a piece of jewelry that can one day be passed down to your son or daughter. But the options seem endless. So how do you find that special piece destined to become a cherished family heirloom and tangible link to your history? Dan DeVries, president of DeVries Jewelers, offers his suggestions for three important things to consider when looking for heirloom-quality jewelry:

Timelessness. Look for a piece with classic style

— something that can be worn for years. This means considering an item with traditional shapes and lines rather than a trendy option that can go out of style. “The timeless nature of the piece is key,” says DeVries. “Options like a pearl necklace or earrings, a classic colored stone piece, or diamond stud earrings are good choices.”

Fine quality & craftsmanship. Because an

heirloom will be handed from one generation to the next, it’s important to look for fine quality that will last the test of time. If you let your jeweler know you intend for the piece to become a family heirloom, they can help you make a great selection. “It’s important to know that a lot of work and care went into the piece,” says DeVries. “This might mean selecting a top-end colored stone or a high-clarity diamond, or even a mechanical watch, rather than a more modern quartz one.”

Meaning. Make a choice that reflects something

significant or special to you and your family. Consider jewelry with a birthstone, a piece that can be engraved, or even a symbolic item that reflects your ethnicity, heritage or religion. |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
