I respectfully acknowledge the Kaurna people of the Adelaide Plains and pay respect to Elders past and present. Welcome to my neighbourhood, the humble abode, I have come to call home, the land of strength, resilience and joy. Let’s sit down and have a cup of chai1 together. Close your eyes and breathe in the humid air fragrant with the earthy scent of the soil and the wafting smell of jasmine dhoopkathi2, listen to the happy clamour of the children, the distant sounds of the rickshaw horn . . . can you feel?

the cool shade of the tree, the gentle rustling of the leaves?

Allow me to show you the carnival of colors I call home, where the Southern breeze murmurs, the buzz of the wings of the fruitflies, the flute of the beggar alike.

The bindu (•) is a Sanskrit term meaning point, drop or dot and symbolizes union i.e. the point at which creation begins and is ultimately unified.

Devyani Dasgupta is a graphic designer and visual storyteller based on Kaurna Land in South Australia.

Her practice explores the effects of cross-pollination of various cultural impresses on her Indian identity and her craft acts as a visual extension for these shared narratives.

A union of Brahmi, Gurmukhi and Latin script on a modular grid, the logo celebrates the ‘unity in diversity’ that is fundamental to her approach to design.

The brand is a visual homage to the key cultural experiences that form a part of Devyani’s identity and thrives to raise consciousness about diversity in graphic design and act as a platform for inclusion.

The intrinsic values of the brand are represented by symbolic elements — a feminist, culturally sensitive, untamed and empowering spirit.

The art direction for Abida Parveen is inspired by the mystical, universal essence of her music. Captured in a bold and vibrant spirit, the ‘type as object’ approach utilizes a fixed-pitch typeface, tight leading, and youthful copy to signify the ‘edgy’ nature of Qawwali, an artform traditionally performed by men.

Place in the Adelaide CBD has specialized in cult television and film, science fiction, horror and Japanese animation since 1995.

As Adelaide’s only movie rental store, Galactic was in dire need of a revitalized visual identity to represent its unique personality, its specialized 90’s nostalgia and it’s sense of friendship and community since 1995. This new brand celebrates Galactic’s uniqueness, idiosyncrasy and cult-following, builds stronger emotional connections between the store and its loyal community of movie lovers and promotes the store to film buffs all over the world.

St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival started as a series of weekly shows at a tiny Melbourne bar and has bloomed into one of Australia’s most beloved festival institutions. An international signifier of essential music, the event continues to showcase its original set of values: championing community, fostering collaboration, encouraging self-expression, and finding ongoing excuses to have fun.

A very electric period of my uni life inspired my design direction for Laneway Festival. While developing the visuals for the campaign, my primary aim was to capture this feeling of vibrancy and vigor to create engaging graphics. The design process started with a hands-on collage based approach using student-run publications as my source material. The fragments of the collages were unified digitally by superimposing them with layers of color, pattern, texture and type. This resulted in abstract, dynamic, contemporary compositions transforming across different touchpoints and encapsulating the bohemian spirit of Laneway Festival.

This speculative architectural project — explored imagery as a medium for temporal visual narratives illuminating an anecdotal approach to architecture i.e. architecture building up to a short story. Hypothetical narratives showcasing LGBT users of space have been presented. These narratives are either based upon facts, or inspired by film and media or are an amalgamation of factual data and cinematic characters.

After nearly two years of the pandemic, new and more holistic understanding of health and wellness have emerged. The need to protect our physical health came first but we soon came to appreciate all aspects of mind, body, and spirit wellness.

Words are extraordinarily powerful, they can motivate and encourage people and when used negatively, they can be weapons of conflict.

Words That Have Helped Me (And Might Help You) While Feeling Not So Good embraces design as a form of a therapeutic outlet for my thoughts and emotions regarding my personal mental health journey to create an intimate, tactile message that people can resonate with. My ideas revolved around documenting the positive affirmations that helped me into a tangible piece of design that might be useful to someone someday.
