Photography is important to me because it combines all the things I really value.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and why photography is important to you. What was it that first got you interested in photography?

My name is Evan Batky, I'm 19 years old and I lived in CO for 18 years. For the last 2 months I've been living in Geneva, Switzerland. Photography is important to me because it combines all the things I really value. It allows me to connect and make amazing friends. I've made so many friends who either also take photos or model. It's an amazing community that stretches all around the globe. Second photography takes me on amazing adventures. I'm always looking for a new mountain to climb, or lake to swim in. The photography then comes in to capture all the memories. Behind every photo there is a story, and whenever I look at one of my photos I always remember everything about the moment I took the photo. I first began interested in photography along with a group of my friends around 3-4 years ago. We would all go out and take photos in the mountains. It was just for fun, and to make memories.

Who or what are your main sources of inspiration?

For inspiration I have to start with Kent Johns (@kent_johns), and Michael Graef (@mikeygraef). They were the first professional photographers I ever met, and their work back then, and now, constantly inspires me. Besides that I don't really have a specific source of inspiration. I try to look at as many different social media platforms as I can to get inspired. Recently I've been spending a lot of time of Pinterest and Behance. What do you look for in a model when you are planning a portrait session?

When planning a portrait session the most important thing for me is experience. Just like anything else, to be good at it, one needs practice. However sometimes you don't get the luxury of experienced models. If you're shooting engagement photos, or senior pictures, most likely the person has rarely been infront of a camera. So what you have to do is figure out what poses/angels are most natural looking for the model. Some people look better staring strait into the camera, some look better at an angle, etc...

I've made so many friends who either also take photos or model. It's an amazing community that stretches all around the globe.

What has been your favourite photography project to work on so far?

It's so important to be persistent, or you won't make any progress.

So far my favourite photography project was a shoot I did right before I left Colorado. I shot with one of my favourite models (@michaela_farrer) in a sunflower field. The photos came out amazing and since I was shooting with someone I enjoyed shooting with, it was an awesome time. What would be the best piece of advice that you could give a new photographer?

The best piece of advice I could give to a new photographer is to keep shooting. I had so many times that I felt like giving up because I didn't like how my photos were coming out. It's so important to be persistent, or you won't make any progress. A second piece of advice is to never be discouraged by others. In this day

and age it's so easy to see other people's photos, and feel inferior. Just remember that all those amazing photos were taken by a person with a camera. Nothing more. All it takes is practice, and eventually you'll become what you aim at. Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s next for you? Are you working on anything you can tell us about?

Personally for me I want to grow my photography into new genres. I LOVE portraits, it's probably my favourite thing to shoot. However, only shooting 1 thing limits your potential. Now living in the beautiful country of Switzerland, I want to capture it as best as I can. I also want to keep exploring ways to turn my passion of photography into a living. This is the goal for every creative person, and in our modern era it is earlier than ever. I hope to keep exploring new outlets for my photography, and expand my portfolio.

Top Three Graphic Design Trends of 2018 Writer / Stephanie Benfield

2017 was a year with impact in terms of graphic design trends. While the design work may have been intricate, the trend was for striking yet simple ideas. With 2017 being the year for small tweaks that make a big difference, what do we have in store for the stand out graphic design trends of 2018? 1. Bright and brave Striking colour palettes are a must for 2018. Many brands are braving bold, clashing colours. For those not quite willing to take a risk with a new colour palette for their brand, they are opting for more vivid tones that grab attention and deliver a fresh, new feel that is fitting for 2018. As colour influences up to 85% of a buyerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decision, and bright colours are the ones that have the highest conversion rates, it is vital that brands take the leap into vivid, bright colours for their next campaign. 2. Corrupted images Once an irritation and a fear of graphic designers, corrupted images, glitches and imperfections are one of 2018â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hottest design trends. It may seem like a risk, but pictures in the style of old VHS images on pause are a must-have, fashionable effect.

Corrupted images also tie into the destructive trend that is sweeping the design world where breaking, ripping and scratching your hard work to leave distressed beauty is the way forward. 3. Double exposure While double exposure has not been a prominent trend for many years, 2018 is bringing the double exposure back in a way to inspire and astound. Two images in one go beyond what is expected while double exposure duotone, using monochrome colours, is undoubtedly the effect of the future and something graphic designers can get ahead of the game on. Adding to the trend is the style of double light, where designers use two light sources or split colour channels to create a look that is modern, distinctive and edgy.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and why photography is important to you?

My name is Joshua Drakes, a Digital Artist and Photographer based in Manchester, UK. Photography is important to me as a way of expression, to create new stories and a form of art. What was it that first got you interested in photography?

It was actually landscape photography! I've always been a fan of landscapes, taking photos of buildings etc. It's just something that interested me and helped me learn more about photography. Who or what are your main sources of inspiration?

My main sources of inspiration comes from various places, from art, to music, to

poetry and photographers and fashion. My main inspiration for ideas would be Peter Lindbergh for his timeless style and photos. What do you look for in a model when you are planning a portrait session?

I look for someone who brings ideas to the shoot, is open to concepts or just screams out to me “I want to work with them”. What has been your favourite photography project to work on so far?

It would be my recent editorial “Sisters of Fate”. It was a project I was trying to get off the ground for a couple months but when I finally managed to get it done, it was exactly what I had for the concept.

Would you say you had a ‘muse’ or a particular model you tend to work with more regularly?

Learn about the history of said genre. The masters that came before you, who gave you inspiration.

I would! My current and favourite muse is my friend and blogger Starr Clare. We've shot together a lot and always try to make new shoots every single time. She reminds me of a young Kate Moss so I like to view her as my Kate Moss. What would be the best piece of advice that you could give a new photographer?

Depending on the genre of photography, learn about the history of

said genre. The masters that came before you, who gave you inspiration. Learn how they did it and how you could bring that to your work. What’s next for you? Are you working on anything you can tell us about?

I'm always working on more fashion editorial ideas! I've got a mental health project I'm also currently working on as well.

Influencer, visionary, entrepreneur and creative genius, Steve Jobs made an incredible and unprecedented impact on the world. Known as the face of Apple, and the maker of iconic products from the Apple Mac to the iPhone, Steve Jobs redefined key consumer industries.

With a net worth of over a million dollars when he was just 23 years old to an estimated value of $10.2 billion when he died, Steve Jobs got to his position through hard work, perfectionism and his five core design principles that shaped his success and ensured his visions came to life. The five design principles of Steve Jobs 1. Simplicity It is no secret that the best products and services are the ones that are easy to use. Steve Jobs lived by the belief that you have to make everything obvious. Intuition plays a huge part in some of the most successful designs from Steve Jobs. His principle of simplicity is to base designs on principles that people already understand. A key example of this is the use of physical gestures. By focusing on simplicity with design, you can achieve not only usability but sophistication too. 2. Friendliness One of the significant successes of Apple designs is their usability and desire to help people. Steve Jobs ensured that designs were friendly and empathetic to people’s needs. There was importance in building a connection with the customer. Apple products strive to show that they

understand consumer needs better than anybody else. The friendliness was demonstrated with a smiley face when starting up the first Apple computer. Focusing on helping customers, being approachable and friendly allows designs to appeal to people who consider themselves novices or are overwhelmed, in Apple’s case, with technology. 3. Minimalism With interest in Zen philosophy, Steve Jobs made sure minimalism was at the heart of every design. He was known to ask the team to take away all the noise and focus on the core need of the product. With his perfectionism, Steve Jobs was known to be ruthless with designs, stripping down products until they had just the fundamental elements needed. While it is easy to add elements to designs, sometimes the most success comes from removing everything that is a distraction. It is essential to make sure that the principle is maintained and isn’t lost through a complication. 4. Precision In all aspects of life, Steve Jobs took precision seriously. His level of detail has left a deep impression on designers, and his focus on craft has always been admirable. His accuracy in his art made sure that aesthetics were maintained at all

times. Even if elements are hidden, Steve Jobs ensured that every single aspect is high-quality and attractive. With this precision, it is important to remember that people do judge a book by its cover and that quality should never be compromised. 5. Focus With a design in mind, Steve Jobs never allowed himself to be sidetracked by another idea. Staying organised and focussed is critical. Steve Jobs once said; “I’m as proud of what we don’t do as I am of what we do”. With this in mind, clear away distractions and plan ahead to stay on track. Always have focus on your original goal.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and why photography is important to you. What was it that first got you interested in photography?

Hi! My name is Mollie, I'm a fashion photographer from Russia/Germany ( I live a little bit everywhere) I'm obsessed with photography and it basically changed my life and influenced me a lot as a person. It all started when I was around fourteen. I moved from my parents in Russia to Germany and my mom completely forgot to take her camera back. I never used it until I found my first friend in a new country. This girl was obsessed with Instagram (still one of my best friends). I started helping her out, and it slowly turned into a challenge. I didn't like how I took photos especially when I saw other photographers' work. It was a great mystery to me. I knew I could do much better. So I started studying it by myself. I could spend nights researching it and exploring Photoshop. So that's basically how my addiction started. To this day, I still think I can always do better and I definitely will. That's why I love photography, it keeps that fire in me and motivates me to grow.

Who or what are your main sources of inspiration?

I mostly get my Inspiration from people. It's always a challenge for me to see a person who I'm shooting with and find the way to capture their true image or some crazy idea. I am always hunting for personalities. Other photographers inspire me a lot too. I am always down for some healthy competition. When I find something amazing that a talented photographer has created, it motivates me to work. There's always more you could do, there's always something else I can climb. What do you look for in a model when you are planning a portrait session?

As I already mentioned In a model I am always looking for a character, a person with individuality. Confidence is also a big factor. I love working with confident models; they know how to enjoy the process and realise their worth. I also enjoy when models are down for experiments and new ideas. This always makes process more fun when we get to create together something we both enjoy.

I am always hunting for personalities. Other photographers inspire me a lot too. I am always down for some healthy competition.

What has been your favourite photography project to work on so far?

I feel like one of the most important things any artist should remember is not forget to do it for yourself.

That's a tough question... When I think about all the exciting projects I've taken part in, I can't really pick one. All of them were such an experience for me, so it's hard to say which one was the most exciting. I am more than sure my perfect project is gonna happen in the future, pretty soon I'd say! What would be the best piece of advice that you could give a new photographer?

I feel like one of the most important things any artist should remember is not forget to do it for yourself. A lot of factors can distract you: money, popularity, the

feeling of pleasing everyone. But your photography will only grow if you work on it, enjoy it and be passionate about it. Self-development and constant growth are things that gonna keep your photography alive. Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s next for you? Are you working on anything you can tell us about?

Yes, a lot of exciting things have been happening lately! I'm really proud that photography is taking a big part of my life now. I can't say anything specific now. But it for sure includes a lot of traveling and working with crazy minds. I'm excited to hop on a plane soon and start creating! I'll definitely let my followers know what's up really soon!

recently spent a week photographing the streets of Havana, the Capital of Cuba. It is an amazing city for photography: full of colourful vintage cars, beautiful people who are full of character, and interesting ramshackle architecture. Cuba is a country located in the Caribbean, south of the US state of Florida, west of Haiti and north of Jamaica. Cuba is the largest island in the Caribbean, and has

over 11 million inhabitants. Havana is the capital city and leading commercial centre of Cuba. Havana is full of colourful old classic cars. Here one causes a splash after a rainfall in front of an Orthodox Russian Church along the seafront.

The city of Havana attracts over a million tourists annually, subsequently the entrepreneurial locals have figured out ways to cash in such as posing for photographs with the local cigars.

The streets of Havana are full of energy and life. Here a taxi driver stops to buy some fresh fruit, while a man on his bicycle sells freshly cut flowers.

You hear music everywhere in Havana, here some street musicians play the classic Cuban song, 'Guantanamera'.

Along with classic cars you will find many other forms of transport in Havana including the Horse & Cart which is used an an alternative form of taxi for the locals.

Evidence of Cuban's communist past still exist throughout Havana. Here a local poses as Che Guevara for the benefit of the tourists.

Havana is full of beautiful, colourful, old colonial buildings, many of which have fallen into ruin including these along the seafront.

FRANCESCA D'ANGIOLO Francesca D'Angiolo is an 18-year-old half English half Italian A-level art student. Her speciality is pen and pencil drawings inspired by nature, animals, amazing people and her inspiring travels. Her aim for all of her artwork is for it to have a sense of refined delicacy and realism.

Photoshop These pieces are Photoshopâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s of two of my biro drawings, I was looking to expand and further develop my previous biro drawings. I feel the bold colours compliment each other as well as highlighting the detail and work that has gone into the drawings.

Lillie This is a biro and pencil drawing of one of my friends. Her prominent facial features and natural beauty inspired this drawing.

Turtle My turtle biro is inspired by my charity work in Sri Lanka. During my time there I worked with the local children, teaching them English and renovating their local school. I also went to an elephant sanctuary, however the thing that influenced my art the most was the turtle sanctuary for injured and disabled turtles, the highlight if my trip was releasing the newly hatched turtles into the sea.

Lion After years of animal drawings I looked to challenge myself for this one, both with the size and detail. It is A3 sized and every last hair has been individually drawn and shaded in either biro or fine liner to create the textured main and face.

Amy As my skills of people drawing began to improve, I looked to draw a famous celebrity that people would recognise instantly. For this pencil drawing I chose to include Amy Whitehouseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most iconic features; her teeth, her piercing and of course her eyeliner. I deliberately did the background in black fine liner to make the facial features stand out.

My trip to Sri Lanka also included a safari which enabled me to experience first hand the true beauty of wildlife. It is this that has sparked my interest in drawing animals, my proffered material is biro as that gives my drawings more realistic and lifelike qualities.

Skull My interest in animal drawings soon developed in an curiosity into the drawings of their anatomy, this depiction of an animal skull later inspired me to go down the route of designing skull inspired tattoos for people.

Parrot This is one of my earliest large scale animal drawings as I completed it at the age of 16, it took a total of 32 hours however, it will always remain one of my firm favourites.

This piece is motivated by insect inspired outfits on the catwalk. The border is done with black brusho paint, the woman with pencil crayon and the dress in ink. It is one of my first experiments with pencil crayon however I feel the mixed media works well and hope to continue this combination and develop it further.

Rather than always drawing larger scale animals I chose to choose smaller insects and amplify even the most minor details, to enhance the true beauty their size doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t always allow us to see.

This watercolour woman was completely different and out of my comport zone. As I am so use to doing detailed people drawings this more modern, colourful style was a bold contrast compared to what I am use to, however I feel that this was a good risk to take.

This smaller scale A5 drawing was inspired my the ballet classes I use to take as a child, ballerinas grace and fluidity of movement always memorized me. Sadly, my clumsiness and lack of grace prevented me from ever been as elegant... hopefully my drawings are more successful.

VIKTOR HANCOCK Each photograph that Viktor Hancock captures is a work of art that tells a story. Whether it's a beautiful mountain vista, mossy forest, sunrise in a desert, or sunset on a lake, he strives to creatively portray each subject in the most memorable and beautiful ways. He used to think that going to war or becoming a police officer or firefighter were the only brave things a person could do; now, he believes that it also takes courage to still his inner self and to let the land speak to him.

Experience His love for photography emerged around the age of 12 years old while on a trip to the zoo with his father. There, his father put a camera in Viktorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hands for the very first time, giving him the freedom to explore and capture the surrounding life and environment. Both hesitant and excited, he seized this opportunity. Capturing image after image of everything he possibly could, his love of the lens was born. As a member of the United States Air Force, he had the unique chance to pursue his dream of photography by being sent to Iraq, Japan, Western Europe, and the west coast of the United States of America. As seen in his photos,Viktor has also visited numerous national parks throughout North America. College education fine-tuned his technical knowledge of light and shadows, contrasting colors, and camera equipment. This has enabled him to capture images most photographers only read about or see in magazines. This hands-on experience is what helps bring his photographic vision to life.

BORNS - WE DON'T CARE The work is artwork for a competition brief for pop musician BORNS in which it was for BORNS new video for his new song called 'We Don't Care' taken from his new album Blue Madonna. BORNS challenged artists to create a piece of artwork in which it could feature on the background of his new video. My design features around attitude of the 'We Don't Care' phrase & features a woman smoking a cigarette with the title of the song. The style of the artwork is pop art, a style which has greatly inspired me. â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Shaun Mulhern
