t’s always a strange feeling having to put an October issue of Banzai together in the height of summer. Well, I say summer, it seems to have rained more than we’ve seen sunshine here, but that’s the UK for you. Thankfully, you certainly wouldn’t have thought that was the case when taking a look at some of the stunning, sunny photography in this month’s issue! It starts with the photoshoot for the awesome Nissan PS13 on pages 42-48, which certainly makes the UK seem a nicer place to be. Then again, the very sunny Time Attack GT86 shoot from Australia, on pages 72-78, looks even more impressive. Foreign weather shines again with the shows from California, for the Nissan Jam event on pages 35-39, and Norway, for the epic Gatebil event, on pages 51-55. In other news, you might have seen from the cover that we’ve themed our Tech Talk this month and concentrated it into a larger section. We’ve kicked it off

But for all the vital info and tech, check out pages 92-102, for all you need to know about the 10 most popular engines to swap, plus a bonus oddball. From that, you should be able to decide which engine to use on your next project car, as there’s also some important tuning advice and information on how rare these engines are and how much they cost. Next month, we will be focusing on another Tech Talk themed special, but until then, get reading and get planning!

NAEC, Stoneleigh Last year, Kent-based car collective Slammed UK created one of the most successful debut car events we’ve seen in recent years in the form of Gravity: a premium indoorand-outdoor modified car show held in Warwickshire that attracted all manner of show, race, drift and supercars from the UK and far beyond. Back for its second year and this time supported by none other than Red Bull Motorsport, 2017’s instalment, once again held at Stoneleigh’s NAEC venue, certainly lived up to expectations. SUBARU IMPREZA WRX STI TYPE R
VERSION 5 [’98–‘99] Looking for a limited edition, two-door Impreza but don’t want to remortgage your house to buy it? We might just have found the perfect solution… Words and photos: Sam Preston
C
an you believe that more than a couple of examples of Subaru’s ‘holy grail’ Impreza – the 22B – have now tipped the £100,000 mark when sold in recent auctions? And when the world is willing to pay six figures for a humble 2.0-litre Japanese sports car from the Nineties, it somewhat sadly proves that parts of the JDM market from this era are unfortunately starting to reach the ‘fully unachievable’ level for the majority of enthusiasts. But it’s not all doom and gloom. The beauty of early, ‘GC8’-shaped Imprezas is that there were enough variants made over the car’s relatively short lifespan to fill a Bible, meaning you just need to get a little bit clever, find the second-best version, and save yourself a packet in the process. The subtly-named Impreza WRX STI Type R Version 5 (which we’ll refer to simply as the ‘V5’ from now on to save printer ink) is a strong contender to take silver in the ‘best GC8 models of all time’ awards. And dissecting this car’s name shows us why: ‘STI’ bringing the fiery 276bhp version of the EJ20 boxer engine to the table; ‘Type R’ lopping off the rear doors and turning the saloon into a squat coupé; and ‘Version 5’ meaning a raft of more modern, end-ofproduction tweaks were added. Still with us?
October 2017
017
GRAN TURISMO STI TYPE R V5
Why is it so special?
Many believe the JDM-only V5 supplies the most driver-focused spec combination on any Impreza other than the 22B. Under the heavily vented bonnet sits the fieriest incarnation of the Scooby’s burbly EJ20 boxer engine to date, with both auto and manual intercooler spray options and allegedly revised engine internals to offer far more than the factory quoted 276bhp. The celebrated transmission features a Driver Controlled Central Differential (DCCD); allowing control for things like full diff lock for proper rally conditions along with a 70% rear power bias when a little oversteer is required – all available using a simple switch on the centre console. This is mated to a short-ratio five-speed ‘box, only adding to the urgency from that motor up front and leaving a hilariously tight and chuckable drivetrain at your disposal. Talking of the interior, the red-highlighted offering here has aged rather well compared to some Impreza models, with subtle MOMO trim pieces and functional, STI-embossed buckets still looking fairly fresh even by today’s standard. You might’ve noticed that the V5’s spec resembles that of the UK-spec, Prodrivedeveloped P1s very closely, but many opt to import a V5 over instead due to these versions retaining the trick DCCD diff system (the P1 ditched this and added in an ABS system instead – which some weren’t fully happy about).
018
www.banzaimagazine.com
How does it drive?
For a stock car, the V5 is surprisingly savage in its acceleration – perhaps less surprising when you discover this weapon has a book 0-60mph time of 4.7 seconds (and we can believe it)! The JDM-spec’d cars were always more known for an appetite for revs, and this one certainly laps it up as the needle makes its alarmingly vicious way towards 8000rpm. The drivetrain feels tight and exploitable; the diffs feeling satisfyingly mechanical as they do their thing underneath you while you demolish yet another corner. As you get into tune with the V5, all you want to do is find a more challenging road to test its seemingly endless B-road blasting limits further. Whether you ever find these limits or not is another question though…

Buying a STI Type R V5
“Prices of GC8 Imprezas have started to shoot up now, especially the two-door models,” says Ozz from Harlow Jap Autos, where this particular car is currently for sale (www.harlow-jap-autos.co.uk). Although not reaching 22B levels of insanity yet, expect £10,000 to be your very base price for a Type R model, with this figure easily creeping up to almost double that for a car with a desirable spec and low mileage. “It’s usually quite difficult to find a tight, straight Type R, with a large proportion of them being rusty or in a slightly ropey condition,” Ozz continues. With so many examples making their way over to British soil already, however, it’s not hard to find a handful for sale at any one time that you can go and give a thorough inspection to yourself before committing.

aven’t been to Santa Pod before? Firstly, where have you been?! And secondly, get yourself over to an event there as soon as possible. Those of you who have made the pilgrimage to the Wellingborough-based venue before, however, will probably have a pretty good idea how 2017’s Japshow panned out. Swathes of top-notch JDM motors, affordable public quarter-mile drag strip action, jet cars, drifting and a handful of professional drag racing series all featured on the beautiful summer Sunday, meaning that the punters were never too far away from some incredible action. If you missed out this time, fear not: it’s happening all over again on 1 October in the shape of Japshow Finale. Just make sure you put it in your diary this time…
WINNERS
In the static paddocks, there were a number of trophies to be given out to the top show cars. Gems that caught our eye included Chris Wait’s stunning, freshly-imported AE86 Corolla which deservedly picked up the Best Retro award, along with Del Milne’s thoroughly re-worked R32 Skyline GT-R which made it into the Top 5 cars of the day. For full results, check the show’s website.

The drag strip played host to the third round of the 2017 FWD Drag Series on the day, with Kiel Priestmen eventually taking the heat in his rapid EG Civic drag weapon. Meanwhile, over the other side of the verge were a fleet of pro drifters adding some rear-wheel drive flavour to proceedings!

Undoubtedly the highlight for many spectators is the ‘Run What Ya Brung’ (RWYB) event. For a small fee, anyone with a Japanese car can blast up the strip to see how they fare against the other competitors. This unsurprisingly means a whole host of diverse metal passes through the start gates, from the likes of Terry Taylor’s BMW-powered Datsun through to Vinny Wisternoff’s turbo’d Honda Logo hatch, and pretty much everything in between…

HOTTEST
From the screaming all-motor running gear to the perfectly balanced fast road chassis setup, Andy’s Civic Type R takes everything that’s great about old-school hot hatches and dials it up to 11. One thing’s for certain: they don’t make ‘em like this any more… Words: Sam Preston Photos: Steve Hall

040 promises to be a pretty sobering year for car fans in the UK. Because if our friends in Westminster get their way, it’ll be the date that the sale of new petrol and diesel cars will be banned across the entire country. And while 13 years may seem like a long time to wait for this colossal law to come into fruition, we’re already seeing signs of this switchover wherever we go; with most models on the showroom floor already boasting some sort of range-extending, computerpowered wizardry that secretly no one really understands that well. It’s this inevitable change in attitudes towards cars which makes Andy Boyle’s EK9 here seem even more refreshing. Because instead of relying on a dollop of voltage to get it moving, or even a trick turbocharger system to keep emissions down, for that matter, this little B-road weapon remains one of a rare breed to rely solely on its engine for all of its power party tricks. And with such a successful, fun driver’s tool to play with as a result of a decade of fettling, Andy’s sticking a big two fingers to the future with this

incredible hot hatch package. It’s pretty much always been about cars with the H-badge for our Oxfordshire-based service manager here. Running the technical department of his local Honda dealership, and owning pretty much every model in the brand’s range at one point or another, it didn’t take long for him to work out just how rewarding these little cars can be. “I always liked the looked of them, then realised they’re designed for the driver after getting behind the wheel of a few; any Honda makes a boring journey more interesting!” he smiles. This genuine EK9 Type R was picked up almost ten years ago – a then-standard example in fantastic condition. The car was intended to be a stop-gap as Andy moved from one Nissan Skyline GT-R to another but, as you’ve probably guessed by now, things didn’t quite go to plan… “The modifications came organically as I felt there was a weakness in a particular aspect of the car,” he explains, touching on the incredible transformation work that has been achieved on display here. The first major alteration came a good four years into ownership of the Type R,

as Andy finally began to crave a little more power to match the car’s infamously wellperforming chassis. “Luckily, I live just a few miles from the Hond-R garage,” he continues, highlighting how the hatch was sent to the Abingdon-based tuner to switch the B16B motor for a more potent B18C from a DC2 Integra. An extra 200cc, and the removal of the air conditioning system at the same time, gave some noticeably improved performance, especially with low-down torque. “A year later, I got the engine remapped to 202bhp, but this was soon followed with blue smoke coming from the exhaust on lift-off…” Andy sadly reveals. Stripping the engine at his workshop at work, a leaky valve stem seal was soon diagnosed as the root of the problem. “This issue was probably caused
by the fact it was a ten-year-old engine that had covered very low mileage and the valve stem just went brittle. With the engine apart, I decided to go for a complete rebuild with new piston rings, crank shells, valve stem seals and a head skim.” Another half-decade on, and with a brace of chassis modifications beginning to appear on the Championship White beauty, the urge for more power started creeping back into Andy’s life. “I’ve always admired the Spoon Sports EK9 with the K20 engine swap and really wanted to do it to mine,” he tells us, citing the infamous yellow-and-blue beast seen on many a Hot Version episodes as inspiration for his next move. “After a long chat with Maz from Hond-R I decided that I was going to go for the swap…”
With the K-series engine carrying an entirely different blueprint to the B-series motors he’d been dealing with before, along with the fact he was determined to add individual throttle bodies into the mix, Maz and Russ at Hond-R decided to remove everything from the bay before smoothing it off and starting with a blank canvas to add their personal touch to. Regular readers of Banzai will know just how exceptionally clean most Hond-R engine bays end up being, and we think you’ll agree this is no exception: with little but the Hybrid Racing mounts to distract you from the eyewateringly pretty sight of that tidy K20 head. It goes without saying that the most striking aftermarket addition to the DC5-based lump now are those huge green trumpets. Courtesy of AT Power, these 45mm ITBs are teamed to

a much more capable Hybrid Racing fuel system, along with a trick Hard Knocks exhaust, to produce just shy of 250bhp and 180lb ft of torque – pretty impressive from a non-boosted two-litre! We can only imagine the throttle response… As the clinically clean engine bay came together, Andy’s meticulously high standards were applied to the rest of the car. The bodywork is an array of genuine
Mugen panels, while equally-as-genuine Volk rims cover Spoon Sports brakes. Underneath, TEIN coilovers and a mix of BuddyClub and Skunk2 arms ensure the seam-welded pocket rocket handles even better than it already did out of the box. “I think the only standard part left on the entire car is the rear brake calipers!” Andy laughs, illustrating just how comprehensive the build has been.
THE SOUND OF TRUMPETS Designed mainly for uncompromised race cars, getting individual throttle bodies (ITBs) to work on a road car takes some clever engineering to help retain its usability. “There are two main issues with ITBs on road cars,” Andy highlights. “First is that you won’t have a cold start setting in the ECU, so would have to manually hold the throttle open to warm the car up, and the second is that as you get rid of the inlet manifold you have to vacuum for your brakes yourself. The guys at Hond-R got to work on these issues and came up with resolutions. They managed to fit and get working the idle air control valve from my original throttle body so I’d have a proper cold start. With the brake issue, they were able to fit a vacuum pump and air box to feed my brake servo with a little pressure sensor to turn the system on and off as of when its needed.” The result is a heap more power than the engine produces as standard, unbeatable throttle response and, of course, one hell of a bark!

Inside, the original red Recaro interior has been subtly upgraded with Bride fixedback buckets of the same hue, topped off with a JDM-favourite Spoon Sports/MOMO steering wheel to keep Andy in check during hard driving sessions. Remaining fairly civilised reflects Andy’s ethos of being able to drive the car hard when needed, while retaining a level of comfort and usability – just like a proper hot hatch should be. Standard EK9s famously boasted one of the highest specific outputs for a normally aspirated car with around 108bhp/litre on tap, but with his raft of impressive upgrades, Andy’s car trounces this with just shy of 125bhp/litre – almost unheard of in the road car world. “I love NA engines,” he grins. “It’s just the feeling and sound you get when you’re changing gear at 8500rpm. The instant throttle response as well makes you feel like you’re part of your favourite motorsport event. Let’s face it: everyone loves the old V10 F1 cars more than the modern, 1.6 turbo stuff.” With a car that’s cleaner than the
cleanest show car, and more capable than the most capable track car at the same time, Andy’s unsurprisingly enjoying his Civic in a lot of different ways now it’s at this stage. “It drives unbelievably well,” he admits. “I’m still having trouble getting traction in the first three gears, but I’ll upgrade to semi-slick tyres soon...” With a throaty engine up front connected to a manual gearbox and encased in a flyweight package, we really do think that if an alien came to earth to ask to see the best example of an old school hot hatch, we wouldn’t hesitate to put Andy’s car forward. And with preparations underway for an electric future and most new cars sporting heavy, futuristic tech, it might stay the best for a long while yet… THANKS Maz & Russell at Hond-R, Romain Lévesque, Steve Reeve at Specialist Welding & Fabrication, Chris from Hard Knocks, Mark & Adrian from Aladdin Bodyshop

MY STORY‌ It may have taken a twist of bad luck before Sean Hays moved onto this Nissan PS13, but it still makes for an interesting story all the same‌ Photos: Steve Hall

price, so there was very little out there to buy at the time.
So you made the leap to Nissan power?
A friend of mine owned this car, so I knew it quite well and the PS13 is my favourite of all the S-bodies. It was imported from Japan pretty much like this.
What’s been done to it then?
It came fitted with a GReddy front mount intercooler, Walbro uprated fuel pump and 3.75” exhaust. Inside was a pair of genuine Bride seats with four-point harnesses and a Nardi steering wheel. It was also stripped out.
Anything else?
It was also fitted with Cusco coilovers and a Cusco two-way LSD and there was also an S14 five-stud conversion all round.
What is the bodykit on the car?
It’s mostly unknown. Well, the front bumper and side skirts are both unknown. The mirrors are rare too and it’s fitted with projector front headlights. Although the carbon rear wing was fitted by my mate before he sold me the car. The big mystery is the front arches, as their shape is unlike anything else.
So, how long have you owned this car then?
I’ve owned it for about 8 months now. Before this I had a few different cars, including two Mazda MX-5s, a Honda Accord and a Mazda RX-7. That’s all of the Japanese stuff I’ve owned anyway.
Why did you move on to this?
It all started with my last car. Before this I had a black Mazda RX-7, an FD3. It was off the road for 4 years whilst I was building it up. It was still running the rotary engine with sequential turbos, but I fitted wide arches, a carbon fibre bonnet, changed the wheels, ECU and played around with the engine. I loved it.
What happened to that car?
It got written off by an old man in a Volvo! It was a Cat B write off too, so it could never go back on the road either. But I got paid out by the insurance and then bought the car back, stripped what was left for parts and went looking for a new car.
And you didn’t want another RX-7?
Actually, I did want another one, but I just couldn’t find one. My old one was so nice that nothing else was really that near to it. Plus, all the RX-7s seem to have gone up in
What’s the story with those, they look quite different? I don’t know where the front wings came from. They point at the top and I’ve never seen another set like them, nor has anybody else I’ve spoken to. I’ve been told it’s likely they were handmade in Japan, so the chances of finding a set of rears to match is pretty unlikely!
You will be getting some handmade rears to match then!
That’s what I think I’m going to have to do, as I want bigger rear arches in the future and the fronts need to match the rears.
What have you done since buying it? I’ve fitted an alloy radiator, together with a Stage 4 competition clutch and braided clutch line. I’ve also had both the front end and back end of the car repainted. Inside, I’ve stripped the rest of interior out and also refurbished the new wheels before fitting them.
Did the car need repainting then?
It had a massive crack in the front bumper and was missing a bit, so I re-fibreglassed it and painted it. The rear bumper paint was spider webbed, so I sanded that down and repainted it; not bad for a builder!

Good job! What are those wheels; they look wide? You need wide wheels! They are Adamas alloys, in 18x11” with an ET30 at the rear and18x9.5” with an ET35 at the front.
Lots of grip! What do you use it for?
I do some drifting in the car, but nothing too serious. My friend drifted the car on track a couple of times.
What’s it like to drift compared to the RX-7?
It’s a lot smoother to drift, which was quite surprising. The RX-7 was snatchy when I let off. It handled very well, but the PS13 is a lot better during a transition.
What are the plans now?
I want more power. I was going to forge this engine and fit a bigger turbo but I’ve been offered another engine. It’s still an SR20, but it’s around 380bhp.
046
www.banzaimagazine.com
PS13 DRIFT CAR So time for an RB gearbox?
I’m going to turn it down to 350bhp for now, as the standard gearbox is supposedly good for around 400bhp. Although saying that, I’ve managed to break one gearbox already!
How did you manage that?
It was my own fault, during this photoshoot for Banzai magazine actually! Luckily, all my mates are all into these cars so I managed to get hold of another and it’s been replaced.
So what it is like to drive?
I love this car, it’s got the Japanese feel that I haven’t had with any of my other Jap import stuff I’ve owned. The car drives lovely, too. It’s perfectly balanced and when I drift it, it’s more like gliding!
And you don’t miss the RX-7?
I do miss the RX-7. It just looked so savage and then there was the noise; I do miss the noise it made. I actually plan to buy another one in the next year or so, but I will be keeping the PS13 as well!
Is there anyone you would like to thank?
I’d like to thank Boss Car UK for giving me the motivation to carry on through other members showing their builds. And I’d also like to thank anyone else who has helped me on along the way.
“I love this car, it’s got the Japanese feel that I haven’t had with any of my other Jap import stuff I’ve owned”

ROCKET BUNNY RX-7
NO MESSIN’ ABOUT
Built virtually single-handedly and often during the dead of night, Curt Hicks’ RX-7 proves just what wonders can be achieved if you let a man with a plan loose in a shed for a few months. Prepare to be inspired… Words: Sam Preston Photos: Andrew Thompson

I
f you’re a regular to car shows, it’s easy to become accustomed to the impressively high calibre of modified metal our country has on offer. And it might be a cliché, but you can always be sure that about once a year a new build will come along that really does take your breath away, cementing your love for this crazy scene all over again. Perhaps it’s the incredibly no-nonsense way it was sprung upon us seemingly out of nowhere, but Curt’s wide-arch RX-7 was the car that hit me the hardest when I spotted it for the first time earlier this summer. It’s certainly not the first Rocket Bunnykitted example of this stunning coupé we’ve seen on British shores, and it may not even be boasting eye-wateringly huge performance figures from its rotary powerplant, but thanks to its owner’s impressively no-nonsense mindset it somehow holds its largely JDM modifications in a satisfyingly Japanese way
that other cars often don’t quite nail. And it’s this that makes it almost impossible to stop gawping at when you see it in the flesh for the first time. Somerset-based Curt isn’t shy of a performance Japanese motor. In fact, during his short time on this planet, he’s already been down almost every avenue there is to when it comes to tuned JDM cars. All except one, that is… “I picked the RX-7 up in September of last year,” the account manager explains, keen to see just how this rather unusually powered sports car fared against its peers. The mint, near-standard car was purchased with strict guidelines from Curt’s fiancé Bethany that it had to remain that way – the two had recently started a new family together and Curt is the first to admit that he realistically didn’t have time to be playing around with cars right now. “I started working on building a new fence

ROCKET BUNNY RX-7 in the garden,” Curt continues, telling us how he was trying with all his might to distract himself from tinkering with his new toy. “It just so happens that I had enough wood left over for a nice timber-framed garage, though… Shame, eh?!” We think you know where this is heading now… With his pride and joy soon tucked away inside its new home that he’d built for it, Curt found himself enjoying the Mazda’s company when everyone else had gone to sleep most nights. Not one to sit still, he initially began by playing with relatively trivial things such as trying out new wheels, before matters escalated fairly rapidly. “I couldn’t get it to sit properly,” he recalls.
CHASSIS Filling up those wide arches nicely, the Rota MXR alloys sitting on this car offer up a colossal 11-inches of width allround. With sticky 285-section Yokohama semi-slick rubber wrapped around them, it’s clear Curt’s not taking any prisoners when it comes to the way this thing performs. HSD monotube coilovers take care of the handling, which Curt says is matches the improved power now on offer nicely. “I wanted a nimble B-road toy, and I’ve certainly got it now!”

www.banzaimagazine.com
“Then I found myself accidently putting an order in with EP Racing for a Rocket Bunny body kit…” The modification floodgates were now well and truly open, with Curt no longer able to suppress his urges to create the aggressive, street racer-inspired build that’d been secretly forming in his head for months. “The build was limited to a couple of hours a night, usually starting around midnight,” Curt continues. “But after the kit was bolted on, it was very clear I wasn’t going to be happy with it the way it was.” Not quite replicating the look he’d envisioned, our focused owner here bit the bullet and got out the grinder in order to customise the bodywork to get closer to what he was after.
Cutting up Rocket Bunny kits in the early hours? We get the impression Curt’s one of those guys who was busy working out how to get places in life as a youngster while we were still watching busy watching cartoons! With the gorgeous teal body finally taking shape, work began making the Wankel unit up front a little more potent. There was now a huge stack of HKS performance parts sitting in his garage ready to be fitted after a large street port and trick non-sequential turbo conversion were undertaken. Keeping the stock twin turbos but allowing them to both run at full chat at the same time offers up a lot more performance when teamed with other engine modifications – in this
BODYWORK The V2 version of the Rocket Bunny kit consists of distinct flared arches, side skirts and a trick front and rear bumper. Most are content with riveting these topquality JDM pieces on and enjoying a thoroughly attractive car to play with, but Curt wasn’t as easily pleased. “The kit was only really a starting point to what I wanted to achieve,” he explains. The personal touches come in the form of added vents on both the front and rear arch extensions, as well as redesigning the front-end which has been painstakingly mixed with an REAmemiya item to give this car a seriously striking, unique look from the front. At the rear, Curt spent a lot of time carefully designing a comprehensive chassis mount plate for his huge Voltex rear wing. Now looking super-functional sitting flush in the cutaway bumper, it’s hard not to smile at the drama unfolding from the rump of this beast, even when it’s sitting still. To top it all off, the kit was blended, rather than the more common option to rivet it to the car, which undoubtedly works great with a layer of that teal paint applied over the top.

ROCKET BUNNY RX-7 ENGINE Twin-turbo RX-7s were famously some of the first production cars in the world to sport clever sequential turbo systems. Helping to reduce lag and improve driveability throughout the rev range, an army of hoses, actuators and valves stop the second Hitachi HT-12 from operating fully until around the 4500rpm mark. Problem is, once you’ve started fettling with other parts of the engine, this system can become somewhat irrelevant. With turbo lag no longer a huge issue thanks to improved low-down grunt from the engine itself, many opt for a single, large turbocharger at this stage when looking for big power. The other option is the comprehensive task of re-routing the existing twin-turbo setup to allow both units to come on song together, which is what Curt’s managed to achieve here. The engine itself benefits from a large street port – the happy medium between driveability, reliability and improved performance – while the Wankel unit has also received an improved fuel system (850cc primary and secondary injectors, along with an Aeromotive fuel pressure regulator and bigger fuel pump) and a 3” HKS exhaust system. An APEXi FC ECU, mapped to Curt’s fast-road brief by Hayward Rotary, ensures he has a fully driveable (albeit slightly lairy!) rotary weapon on his hands now as a result.

case pushing out 382bhp when put on the rollers at Hayward Rotary. “382bhp in an RX-7 really does make for a very fast car compared to this power in other vehicles,” Curt reveals to us, pleasantly surprised with the way the car launches itself towards the horizon nowadays. “It’s a little too hardcore to get out every single day, but she’s so rewarding to drive, and knowing I built her in a shed is very satisfying!”
Adding to this harsh ride are some HSD coilovers and extra bracing underneath the car, set up to match Curt’s requirements of a fast road toy. Inside, the sparse interior features a functional roll cage, some supportive Bride pews and, well, not much else. With all the sound deadening ripped out, the inspiring revvy soundtrack becomes a very big part of the overall experience when strapped up in this cabin. Now fully unveiled to the world, you’re

probably not surprised to hear just what a storm Curt’s creation caused on social media after its first outing. It seems that people simply can’t get enough of seeing the stark contrast this home-grown road racer creates when sat against our quaint British countryside, and you can see why.
This car was never built to win awards at shows, it was simply an exercise in developing a nimble toy to keep a supercreative Curt occupied during the small hours of the morning. One thing’s for sure: if we all took a leaf out of his book, the world would be a more productive place!

Show Time
99 per cent of time attack cars are built with go, not show, in mind. This Australian 86 is a little different, though. And it’s still stupidly fast.
W
hen did you last see a time attack car with LED lights showcasing the parts inside? Probably never, but that’s because most time attack cars are built for one purpose; speed. LED interior lights serve no purpose, so they’re never fitted. However, V-Sport Australia built this WTAC Open Class car with three goals in mind - to go fast (obviously) and to showcase both the brands they sell to customers and their own skills in building such a machine. Hence, while they still put a lot of effort into making it go fast (indeed, it’s still the fastest 86 ever to compete at WTAC), they also needed to make it, and the componentry inside, look good. And LED under-dash lighting for things like the Emtron KV8 ECU and one of two MoTeC PDM15 switch boxes connected to it, were among the tricks they used (the rest being a stunning custom paint job, incredible fit and finish, and great engineering). So how did such a car come about? After all, thanks to campaigning both their own Evo X in Open Class and various customer cars throughout the years, along with being the Open category sponsor, it’s not like V-Sport lacked recognition. However, according to manager John Healey, a confluence of circumstances meant building a top-level ‘86 was just too good an opportunity to pass up. First off, while their Evo X was fast, finishing second in Open Class in 2012, it was never a pure time attack build. Having evolved from a tarmac rally car, there were always compromises that held it back, so they sold it and needed a new platform. Second, the ‘86 had very quickly become a cult car in Australia (indeed, the country is Toyota’s third largest market worldwide for it, despite a population of only 23 million), and building a ZN6 racer would allow them to show off all the parts they sold for it. Third, they really wanted to win Open, or at least be the fastest rear-wheel drive car in the category, given that, unlike Pro, the fastest Open Class cars

are still four-wheel drive. Thus, in 2014, V-Sport began work on ‘Timmy, the Time Attack ‘86’. They found a shell, drew up a budget and discussed specs. Given V-Sport sells some of the world’s most desirable brands, deciding on many elements was pretty easy. They went with AP Racing monobloc calipers and two-piece rotors, along with custom Goodridge hoses and Endless pads and fluid for the brakes, Supashock dampers, Eibach springs, customised RaceFab control arms, custom blade-type swaybars and Brypar billet uprights for the suspension, an AP Racing twin-plate clutch, Samsonas sixspeed sequential, custom driveshaft, Cusco
amazingly, remained standard (along with the intake manifold and throttle body), but HKS camshafts and Supertec valves and springs went in to ensure better airflow and improve reliability under high loads. Of course, the biggest change, at least in terms of adding grunt, was the BorgWarner EFR 7670 turbo, complete with Turbosmart EFR BOV, Hypertune billet intercooler, two Turbosmart Compgate 40 wastegates and completely custom V-Sport-built exhaust system. Hooked up to the aforementioned Emtron ECU and fed E85 by twin Bosch Motorsport 044 pumps, a Turbosmart FPR2000 regulator and Bosch 1500cc injectors, the whole system generated 470whp - not an incredible
“There was a lot of feeling around that, as soon as you pulled the FA20 out, it wasn’t an ‘86 anymore” two-way diff and Driveshaft Shop axles for the driveline, and Goodridge hoses, lines and fixtures, 11x18” Advan GT wheels and mandated A050R tyres for the rest. However, what to put in the engine bay proved a trickier problem. At first, some on the team wanted to use a big NASCAR V8, as it would make easy, reliable power, but given the car was being built to advertise V-Sport’s ‘86-related components and expertise, that idea ended up in the bin. As John put it, ‘there was a lot of feeling around that, as soon as you pulled the FA20 out, it wasn’t an ‘86 anymore’, so the crew got stuck into seeing what they could do with the stock motor. As it turned out, there was quite a lot. While retaining the stock block, they bore honed it with a torque plate on to maintain perfect alignment, then attached a Peterson R4 dry-sump system, complete with Hypertune sump and pump mounting. Internally, they fitted Carillo rods, ACL rod bearings and JE pistons to the stock crank, along with an HKS head gasket. The heads themselves,
number, but perfectly acceptable for a stock block and head motor in a sub-1200kg car. Remember, most four-wheel drive WTAC competitors weigh a lot more than that. V-Sport’s philosophy of modifying, not replacing, key ‘86 elements carried on through to the rest of the build, too. Other than some wheel arch tubbing for clearance and an exhaust tunnel through the spare wheel well, the chassis remains entirely intact - no tube-frame front- or rear-end, as you find in so many high-end time attack cars, no cutting and welding the transmission tunnel, no drilling holes everywhere to save weight. Thanks to the carbon bonnet, bootlid, roof, doors, splitter, side skirts and canards, and more importantly, the fact it’s rear-wheel drive, Timmy is already plenty light enough, and again, John says V-Sport didn’t want to create “a hacked-up time attack special”. Not only would that take away from the vision of a relatable ‘86 their customers could use for inspiration, it would also ruin the ‘showcase’ look, and stop them from using the car

for non-WTAC events as well - something V-Sport has done since the car’s first WTAC outing in 2015. “We’ve done trackdays in it, we’ve done Drive Bathurst and other things,” he says. “We haven’t done as much as we wanted to, purely due to time”, he states, but apparently V-Sport still plans on rolling Timmy out whenever possible, and maximising the car just for WTAC would prevent them from doing that. One key ‘86 element V-Sport did change though, and it’s hard to spot at first, is the dash shape. Eagle-eyed readers may have already noticed it, but the Topstage dry carbon dash panel is actually designed for an S13. However, given there was no ‘86 option, perhaps we can forgive them this one deviation. The rest of the interior is packed with top-notch gear that’s perfect for a highend ‘86 racer, though. There’s the stunning inhouse made cage, a Racetech RT9119 seat with Sabelt 2- and 3” six-point harness, a Sparco P130 wheel on a WoodWard boss, AP Racing pedals, MoTeC D153 and C125 dash loggers, AP Racing air jacks, and that giant Samsonas sequential shifter. Oh, and dry carbon floormats too, because when you’re showing off, you might as well. Timmy’s exterior is just as stunning, thanks to an interesting mix of Rocket Bunny front and Varis rear fenders (the Varis fronts wouldn’t work with the rubber and suspension set-up V-Sport wanted), Varis bonnet, bootlid, rear bumper, side skirts and rear pods, Seibon roof, modified Topstage splitter, Supashock rear wing on billet mounts, Voltex canards, APR mirrors and Buddy Club tail lights, plus a modified OEM front bumper and rear quarter window vent panels for the underbody diff and gearbox oil cooler feed hoses. Combined with the show car build quality, it instantly stands out among a sea of ‘function over form’ carbon-clad monsters, thus also doing its job as a rolling

advertisement for V-Sport and their suppliers. Maybe we should say flying billboard though, because despite not having enough testing time prior to its debut run at WTAC 2015 (other, paying work got in the way), Timmy ran a 1:34.548 around Sydney Motorsport Park with V-Sport owner Nicholas Bates at the wheel, putting it 12th in Open Class and instantly making it the fastest ‘86 to ever lap at the event. As we mentioned before, such was the car’s speed, even though it took an enforced break in 2016 due to a lack of prep time, no other ‘86 has matched it since. However, nothing ever stands still in time attack racing, and having made their mark in as ‘pure’ an ‘86 as possible, V-Sport decided it was time to move on and see how much closer to the top of the time sheets they could get. And for that, while loath to lose the FA20, they decided they needed to go back to their original plan of a big V8. Specifically, one of Chris Forsberg’s monster VK56 Nissan engines from his Formula Drift program. Given this pumps out an easy 800hp at 9000rpm, Timmy should certainly not lack for straight line speed anymore, although John points out that 2017 will still be more of a test year than anything else. Thankfully, with Kelly Racing, who run similar engines in their Altima V8 Supercars, on board to help with development, the engine side should progress fairly smoothly. And with more aero development on the way too, Timmy should be a whole lot faster in both grip and grunt. Look out for it at this year’s World Time Attack Challenge.

hey say that for some people cars seem to run in the family. But for Jaakko Forss, that means literally, as this 1974 Toyota Corona has been in his family since new, passing through three generations over 43 years! Jaakko, from Finland, has himself owned the car since 2011. Before acquiring the Toyota, he owned a wide and varied series of cars, including a couple of Hondas, a few Toyotas and no less than three Subarus, including a ’05 Forester STI and a super cool ’89 Brat, which is still in the garage at home. Safe to say that Jaakko has a passion for all things JDM then and this Corona fitted his fancy perfectly. “I like Japanese cars, especially nostalgic ones and the bodystyle on this car is attractive,” he confirms. “Toyotas are also reliable and easy and cheap to fix, plus I have lot a knowledge of these cars. This car has belonged to our family since it was new. Three generations, and hopefully more. My grandpa bought the car as new in 1974. He lived and died in Sulkava, Finland. Then my uncle drove the car for several years in both Sulkava and Helsinki.” The faithful Toyota was then laid to rest in a barn for around 10 years. During this time, Jaakko went to the car several times and admired it ever since, until one day he finally asked to buy the car. Over its decade long rest, the car had lasted about as well as could be expected. “It was in OK condition. It had been driven so little but the paint was awful and there was rust and dents everywhere. The clutch was also jammed on and carburetor needed setting up.” When he first got hold of the car the plan was to simply get it going again and use it, just as his previous family members had done so. Work began by simply treating the car to a good cleaning session and basic restoration to get it back to a usable condition. “I cleaned

RETRO: RT81 TOYOTA CORONA it thoroughly, polished and painted it in various places. It started to look surprisingly good! I then replaced various parts of the engine and did some adjustments so it ran better. I also fitted bigger wheels and tyres from a 1980 Corolla.” So after recommissioning the car and getting it back on the road, Jaakko then drove the Corona as it was for a couple of summers before deciding it had earned another rest. It was then put back into the same barn it had been extracted from and remained there for a couple more years, until the winter of 2015. “Then I got the enthusiasm feeling back and I drove the Toyota to Kuopio, where I live,” Jaakko recalls. “I started to plan what I was going to do with it then. It was a quiet time for me because I had just finished modifying my Subaru Forester, which was my daily driver.” With some spare car time on his hands and the car now located close to him, Jaakko began to restore the car properly. This time round he began by tackling the rust issues head first, and there was plenty to do. “The sills, rear valance, fenders, bottom of the trunk, fuel tank and doors were all in quite bad condition,” tells Jaakko. “The more I ground it back, the more rust came out. I eventually cut all the rusted parts away and replaced the holes with new metal. It took one month solid to do the job. I then painted it with Epoxy Primer.”

After investing so much time and effort into getting the car looking good once again, Jaakko then got to thinking that the Corona deserved to be modified a little bit to suit its new lease of life. “I started to think because it was a big job to get this far that I must modify the car a little bit, but respecting the originality. So it was to be a low budget, old school JDM-style car. But one criteria was also that it was to be daily driven.” To get the look he was after, he started by fitting a set of fiberglass arches originally
destined for a Toyota Starlet. These were filled with the 14x7” wheels and then the car was lowered by 2” all round, introducing a little front end negative camber for the look at the same time. Next came a proper respray, but choosing the right colour proved to be tricky. “I was wondering between black and the original brown. I’m glad I decided to stay with the original shade, although it’s actually based on a Lada colour with a little bling added. It’s so ugly and cool at the same time!”
Jaakko did all of the prep work for the respray himself, before a friend painted the car and it was completed with a full underseal treatment to protect the car from rust returning in the future. To complete the look, the JDM-style wingmounted mirrors were added, along with a Mk1 VW Golf front splitter, headlight intake and, when the time came to build it back up, an unplanned bumper delete. “I thought I would put the bumpers back on but it looked so fierce without them that I decided to throw

them away. The rear bumper was also full of rust holes!” Mechanically, the car was still sound, but was given a basic freshen up all new ignition parts, rubbers, hoses and connectors. The ignition timing and carburetor were also given a little tweak to improve performance and a 2” stainless-steel exhaust system was fabricated my Jaakko himself. The end result is more than enough to reach his goal. “It’s not a rocket but not so slow either; less than ten seconds to
100km/h. It’s a sufficient time for a cruising car and I drive about 2000-5000km in the summer, to work, on holidays and just for fun. It’s very good to drive, fantastic Toyota quality and it gathers old women’s glances! It is a little bit loud, but loud pipes save lives. I will drive it for as long as I can. It has earned it.” Jaakko clearly enjoys and loves the car and he thanks his ancestor for that. “I give great thanks to the grandpa of great car of choice. I wish he could see it now.” We’re sure he would approve too…

It has changed a lot and continues to grow!
Have you faced any hurdles in recent years due to changes in the markets?
Not so much due to change in markets; however we have experienced plenty of hurdles. One that has been a serious struggle is the huge amount of copies of our OBP designs we have to deal with from both overseas and UK based companies. The way we have overcome and managed this continuous onslaught is to consistently improve and innovate our own quality products. Plus, over the years we have developed a strong brand and inform potential customers to only purchase the OBP-designed and branded products from our approved worldwide dealer network – these dealers can be found on our website.
Any new products we need to know about?
Our most significant new release is the OBP Motorsports adjustable top mounts. These are manufactured out of aircraft-grade billet aluminium using OBP’s high quality competition bearings or FLURO professional motorsport high quality bearings. We have been working hard on our top mount project and with extensive testing and research we discovered there was a genuine requirement and desire for competition and

professional motorsport-specification bearing options. So OBP designed two top mount variations to cater to our customer requests and needs. Option one is OBP’s high quality competition bearings, which are manufactured out of carbon steel with a PTFE-lined spherical bearing. Option two features FLURO bearings that are for use in dynamic pressure and high tension load situations. Plus the FLURO motorsport bearings are designed to withstand corrosive environments, perfect for top mount applications. These are the best bearings in the world and used by F1 race teams and supercar companies. In phase two of the project we will have a range of top mounts for various performance Japanese cars.
Any new products/technologies we can expect to see from OBP Motorsport in the near future?
OBP Special Operations Ltd is a very exciting development in the OBP group. After extensive research, customer feedback and reviewing all the products and services we have provided our partners across the world over the past ten years, we’ve package our services to launch our Special Ops dedicated team and services. OBP Special Ops partners include leading OEM supercar manufacturers, motorsport component manufacturers, race teams, niche vehicle manufacturers as well as OEM motorsport brands.

ENGINE SWAPS We’ve got all the information and data you would ever need if your planning to swap a common, or even uncommon, engine into your car…
O
ver recent years, engine swaps seem to have become more popular than ever. Thanks to offthe-shelf fitting kits and mounts, along with companies specialising in engine swaps alone, it seems easier than ever to switch to a bigger or better engine. So to make it even easier for you, we’ve put together all the vital info on the most popular swaps here, from cost and availability to the weight, which is based upon a tall-block engine with ancillaries but no turbos etc... Enjoy!
FITTING: The first things to consider are time, budget and experience. Some of these swaps can be done very easily, if they’re into a car of the same manufacturer and a similar year, such as a Honda B-series into an EK Civic. However, if you’re shoe-horning a Toyota 2JZ engine into a Mazda RX-7, then you will need to be handy with the tools and/or have a healthy budget to pay for any custom parts. But remember, literally anything is possible if you know how, or have the money to do it. Keep an eye out in next month’s edition, where Oilman from Opie Oils will be following on from engine swaps and rebuilds, providing advice on running in new engines and how to avoid common problems, such as power loss and oil consumption.

Due to its unusual des ign, it’s an engine that is only really ever swapped between other Subaru models, so it helps tha t even the six-cylinder version can be fitted eas ily and parts are interchangeable across most models. finally have something to show with regards to the aero, which makes me very happy. Although not 100% complete, the rear diffuser is now attached to the car. The finishing touches will be side plates joining the outer edge of the diffuser to the rear quarter and tucking in behind the rear arch. The entire construction is made from lightweight aluminium, 2.5mm used for the main piece and 6mm used for the four mounting brackets. The outer brackets are screwed directly into the chassis, whereas for the central two there is a lightweight steel bar welded inside across the ‘boot’ floor that they are bolted to. Everything is constructed in a way that all parts can be dismantled. The next stage will be to fabricate a front splitter
which will extend the full way under the engine bay to the down pipe. At this point the side skirt aero will form a flat surface running the entire length of the main body joining the outer side seal to the inner seal, leaving only the central tunnel housing the prop shaft and exhaust uncovered. The aim is to have the underside of the car as flat as possible to cause air to move faster and therefore reduce the pressure under the car sucking it to the road surface. With these under car modifications causing an increase in low pressure, there is a risk of the pressure

becoming too high within the engine compartment. The bonnet scoop and the additional vents will provide a vital air intake, but I may also need to fit bonnet risers to allow the flow of air back out. Some funnelling modifications behind the openings of the front bumper will also be a good source of air into the engine bay. All of this will become part of the testing when driving the car, monitoring air charge temperatures, water temperatures, oil temperatures and pretty much everything else I can to tweak it to perfection. Exciting times!

I
’ve not actually managed to find much spare time this month to have a look under the car for the coolant leak I detected last month, but I did have time to go and pick up a couple of new seats for the car. I just couldn’t resist when I was offered a pair of very good condition standard R32 GT-R seats as these, along with everything else, are becoming harder to find and more expensive by the day it seems! I’m not actually sure I’m going to fit them into the car, at least just yet, but I figured it would be good to have them so I can convert the interior back to a more standard feel if I ever needed to. Of course, I still have a rollcage fitted but the OEM back seats are still there, so at least it will be matching as right now there are a pair of Recaro Confettis up front. In other news, I’ve also ventured into Hondas, or at least their engines. I’ve bought a complete B18C4 engine and S9B LSD ‘box for a little side project that I’m building with a good friend of mine. More information will be coming in the future on this, but I’m afraid it’s not going to be in another JDM car! Next month I’ll find the time to get the car on the ramps to trace that leak, or at least that’s the plan…

K20 CRX So far: Engine removed This month: Began prepping! Next month: More of the same… Thanks: Auto Upgrades' customers!
W
ell, we’ve had an interesting few weeks down here at Auto Upgrades HQ with lots needing doing for our customers. This is mostly because it’s that time of year again for our annual pilgrimage to the Nurburgring, which is happening on the 21st-25th August. However, what we have managed to do is drain all the fluids from the CRX engine and drivetrain before dropping it out the car. We’ve been considering the best approach with this car as its been sat around a while now and although there are no major rust worries there is a lot of surface corrosion we want to deal with now. So, if were dealing with this it only seems right to do it all properly and treat the car like a kind of ‘resto-mod’. Our eventual plan will be to have it on the road and also track by the time the weather improves next year, keeping much more expensive exotica honest! Our next stage will be start the engine bay strip down, modify it for the K20 transplant and then clean it up ready for paint. We will also take this opportunity to clean up the exterior in general before getting the bodyshop’s opinion on what can be done to restore it to its original factory condition. Keep your eyes peeled!

o I have decided to undertake the task of smoothing and tucking the engine bay on my little Honda Jazz track project. I decided the best course of action here was to ask the advice of someone who knows about this sort of thing, and so I got in contact with Alex at Shave All The Bays. I must admit, before having a chat with him, I didn’t actually realise how much work was involved. I assumed it would be matter of

But nope, I was completely wrong. There’s a lot more time, thought and effort, which you will see as I begin this task over the next few updates! First of all, was the boring job of giving the garage a good clean up as I hadn’t put anything away or tidied up since I removed the engine. So 3 hours later it’s all sorted and work can begin on the Jazz again. Now the engine is out it was a matter of getting the wiring and pipes out the way, which wasn’t hard. Then it’s onto the sealant. The guy at the factory that applied the sealant to the strut towers was very sealant happy it seems and laid it on good and thick, which was nice of him! However, all that was needed to remove it was a sharp Stanley knife, some sand paper and a little elbow grease. It also gave me a chance to get the new Dremel tool out and get some of the harder thicker sealant off a little faster. This has left the strut towers looking a lot better but the next job on the bay is to drill out the old spot welds and remove some of the excess metal. As I will be relocating the battery, fuse box and removing the ABS pump there will be plenty of that, but I need to be strategic here as I also plan on hiding the new brake and clutch lines. More to do next month!

THE AIR OF SUCCESS THE AIR OF SUCCESS THE AIR OF SUCCESS THE AIR OF SUCCESS
Think flared arches and air suspension are sure-fire ways of ruining a car’s capabilities? You’ve clearly not met Matt Honeywill and his beautifully functional, performance-focused, Impreza all-rounder, then… Words: Sam Preston Photos: Steve Hall

ife can often feel like a toss-up between looking cool and retaining a sensible level practicality in our day-to-day routines. Put it this way: if you opted for one of those edgy, floppy haircuts seen in the style magazines at dentists’ waiting rooms, you’d undoubtedly look pretty fresh when you left the house each morning, but it’d soon put you off activities like jogging or even popping out in a light shower if you were keen on keeping up appearances. The car world isn’t safe from this phenomenon, either, with the shiniest show stoppers that are drawing in the biggest crowds also the ones most likely to suffer for their art with the most uncomfortable ride on the way home afterwards. Web developer Matt here is one man that’s successfully broken down this barrier

between making a statement and maintaining performance and practicality with his latest project car. A firm supporter of both sides of the equation but believing looking fantastic doesn’t have to come with side effects, his US-inspired Impreza WRX has proven to be as successful at breaking necks at shows as it is demolishing B-roads on his daily commute thanks to a string of clever, boundary-defying modifications. Beginning with a selection of track- and drift-focused metal of both French and Japanese origin, Guilford-based Matt used to be as sceptical as a lot of you reading this are today about the likes of air suspension and show-orientated body parts. “I really wanted to perform a wide-arch conversion on my previous STI, but being a fresh import it was far too clean to see an angle grinder…” he reveals, showing he’s as sympathetic as
the best of us when it comes to tearing up a nice car. But Matt had developed an uncontrollable urge by this stage to style an Impreza in a way he’d seen performed internationally many times, but practically never on British soil. The plan? To fit some Karlton-style arch flares to each corner, then fill the new space with some suitably dished rims and drop the whole thing down to an Instagramfriendly ride height. Quite maturely, then, the aforementioned STI was sold on before it got torn apart and this slightly more projectfriendly WRX then entered the picture earlier this year. “It had the STI wing and bonnet scoop on it already, but most importantly, rusty rear arches!” Matt laughs, knowing that he could cut into the World Rally Blue bodywork with much less guilt than would’ve been felt with
A LOAD OF HOT AIR? Can air suspension really cut it on a sports car? Technology really has come on a long way in recent years with these clever adjustable systems, which now promise to not only offer instant height adjustments but coilover-matching performance to go with it. US-based Air Lift Performance is said to be made up of a team of ex-track junkies, which means Matt’s monotube shock-based system from the firm boasts the likes of extensive camber adjustability, proper monoball top mounts and almost unlimited damping options, all with a 5” range of travel to play with! “Everyone slates air ride but you’ll find that the majority of people who say it ruins the handling of a car are the ones who have never actually experienced a well setup car on air. After some minor tweaking to air spring heights and damper levels I found it incredibly comfortable and very comparable to the BC coilovers I had previously on my STi! Put it this way: If I took a sceptic out for a hoon, they’d have no reason to doubt the cars suspension…”
his previous exploit. With a pile of parts he’d accumulated for this project before he’d even bought the car just waiting to be fitted, things moved pretty quickly from here. We often hear of the excruciating hurdles faced when attempting to create dream modified cars, usually over the period of several months or years. In contrast, then, you’ll probably find Matt’s account surprisingly refreshing… “With most of the parts already delivered or due to be delivered I decided to take a week off work and get started on the planned transformation,” he begins normally enough. “Well, that week went a lot better than expected and with my girlfriend Elly and our friend Sam lending hands the car was totally finished by the weekend!” Aside from a few hiccups with underestimating the amount of fresh paint that’d be required and a seized ball joint to tend to, the majority of

the modifications now adorning this Scooby really were achieved in just seven days. First up was the bodywork. Pulling out the flaky old bits of arch where the rust had really taken its toll and patching up the areas that were still useable, the 2.5” extensions were then cut to perfection before being riveted on and painted to match. With quite a considerable amount of girth added to the car’s footprint, Matt had understandably spec’d some pretty hefty wheels to sit underneath them, too, in the form of 10-inchwide XXRs, finished in the dished 557 style with the all-important gold highlights to set off the blue body colour in that timeless way. “My calculations paid off – they were a perfect fit!” Matt grins, his strenuous planning resulting in no clearance issues or awkward fitment in sight. Meanwhile, underneath the newly curvy body, Matt made light work of getting the performance-centred Air Lift Performance bags and struts set up, connected to a modest air tank to the rear of the cabin. Perhaps the most controversial part of any Impreza build, he’s quick to defend not staying with a static setup. “I just loved the idea of being able to get otherwise impossible fitment without having to sacrifice the underside of my car! A few friends have air and I’ve installed it on a couple of cars before my own so enough was enough and I ordered a kit,” he explains. “I went with the performance kit which provides damper adjustment, camber adjustment and full height adjustment for fine tuning air spring pressure versus ride height.” Things were changing in the cabin, too, in the form of some reclining Corbeau pews and a JDM-favourite Vertex steering wheel, as well as the control unit for the air suspension which was promptly programmed with several presets which would keep the car in check whatever was thrown at it. Because as you’ve probably worked out from Matt’s openminded ethos by now, this isn’t – and was
