Spawning Memories

was rummaging through my basement and came across a curious memento of a charter adventure from 2004. I’m not talking about the bag of shells collected on some beach (I have no idea where because it isn’t labeled) or an item of indigenous clothing (I have several, although no recollection of where I got them) or a photo of a local woman carrying a bunch of bananas on her head (I have several, but no idea where they were taken).

My basement treasure was a certificate acknowledging that I’d played a round at the Mendenhall Golf Course in Juneau, Alaska. Some friends and I had just wrapped up a spectacular fishing charter aboard the 100-foot Burger Katania. In order to catch salmon on fly rods, we’d taken great pains and gone to great expense, including shipping a guide in by floatplane to share his secret streams. The trip was a soaring success with constant action in some of the most beautiful venues on Earth. We had an afternoon to kill in Juneau before flying out, and a couple of us rented clubs to try the local par-3 course. While stunning with its sublime views of the looming glacier from whence it takes its name, Mendenhall Golf Course is no meticulously groomed Augusta or Pebble Beach. We paid our $6 or $7 and teed up. As we moved through the first few hardscrabble holes, we became aware of what appeared to be a drainage ditch that wound across some of the fairways, with footbridges spanning its 4or 5-foot width. Peering down from the first bridge, we noticed that in the water, which was no more than 6 or 8 inches deep, dense wads of the same pink salmon we’d chased all week were thrashing and splashing their way upstream toward, I assume, wherever they make their babies. I’ve stared down alligators and snakes on golf courses, and ticked off nesting geese, but I have to say, I’d never witnessed spawning salmon in water hazards. As the men in my group were both fishermen and golfers, such a sight might have had us looking for some string, a paper clip and a feather to attach to our 9-irons. But we played on, with that strange, wonderful scene stamped on our brains—exactly the kind of memorable moment that awaits you in this, our first Winter Charter Preview issue. We flew home from Alaska with heavy boxes of frozen salmon from the cold, pristine streams where we’d waded with our fly rods. But in a strange way, my stronger memories are of seeing those soldiers in those fairway ditches, executing their DNA-driven missions with single-minded focus while we chopped our way from hole to hole at the foot of that glacier. The greatest pleasures in life often lie in the unexpected, and there are plenty of those moments there for the taking on a charter yacht.

WORLD’S LARGEST ALUMINUM SAILING YACHT IN BUILD SAIL OWNER POWERS UP

Construction is underway at New England Boatworks on Contraband, a 94-foot (28.7-meter) aluminum motoryacht for Newport Shipyard owner Charlie Dana. Contraband is the yard’s largest build to date and is expected to be a world-cruiser, just like the Dana family’s sailing yacht, the 70-foot, Ted Hood-designed aluminum ketch Saint Roque—one of the ﬁrst yachts New England Boatworks built, some 22 years ago. Since then, New England Boatworks has partnered in the purchase of Newport Shipyard, sold its portion of the business and become a regular subcontractor. neboatworks.com

utch builder Royal Huisman, in cooperation with Dykstra Naval Architects, designer Mark Whiteley and Bart Kimman of Northrop & Johnson Asia, has begun construction of a 266-foot (81-meter), threemasted contemporary schooner for an Asian client. She is intended to be a world cruiser with a ﬂybridge that has guest seating, and a sheltered main cockpit with a bar, sofas and a table. The exterior design includes a sliding Rondal door with individually operated, moving glass panels that are intended to create a seamless transition from the cockpit to the interior. The carbon rig by Rondal is expected to have carbon standing rigging and will clear the bridges of the Panama Canal. Whiteley’s modern interior design is based on Alpi walnut bulkheads and oak soles. Hakvoort Shipyard has delivered the 125-foot (38.25-meter) Soprano, designed for ﬁrst-time owners as “a true gentleman’s yacht.” Her exterior, by Diana Yacht Design, has classical aesthetics and a canoe stern—a key element of the owners’ brief. Interiors by Felix Buytendijk are understated in tone and color, with mahogany, white lacquer and limestone. Buytendijk likens Soprano’s sky lounge styling to a New England beach house. Displacement and fuel capacity remain the same, with slight gains in fuel burn likely, thanks to the 96’s longer waterline. The customizable interior is finished with fine hardwoods, raised-panel woodwork, stone soles and granite countertops. The 96 has a fullbeam owner’s suite, three guest staterooms with ensuite heads, a captain’s cabin and a crew space with cabin, head and exterior entrance. Designed by Francesco Paszkowski Design, the 64-foot (19.5-meter) yacht draws inspiration from World War I and II military craft, combining their features and shapes with open-concept elements. Home base for the event was the 154-foot (46.9-meter) Delta Usher, where Veyep (MLB’s headphone and speaker partner) showcased a new line. The 88-foot (26.8-meter) Warren Mystique hosted corporate meetings and tours around Miami. The all-aluminum Van der Valk BeachClub line puts the engine “room” under the swim platform, essentially making the yacht itself a ﬂoating beach club. The ﬁrst of the series is the 62-foot (19.05-meter) BeachClub 600, expected to debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival. “The BeachClub line is the product of many months of research and development with designer Cor D. Rover and Ginton Naval Architects,” said Van der Valk Sales Director Patrick Lankhuizen. “The aim was to create something that would be genuinely

innovative and give clients not only an unprecedented feeling of space, but far more space in reality. We achieved this by dispensing with the normal engine room and placing the Volvo Penta IPS propulsion system [under] the swimming platform. ome yacht designs are so super cool that you imagine they can only be a pipe dream. But 344-foot (105-meter) Vector—a collaborative concept by DeBasto Designs and Oceanco—is more than a pie in the sky. “Without any aesthetic sacriﬁce, our advanced Oceanco engineering makes Vector perfectly feasible,” says Dirk de Jong, director of design and innovation at Oceanco. Vector’s superstructure would be built from continuously curved and angled glass. “Glass is utilized in this yacht not only as a design feature, but as a construction material,” says Luiz DeBasto, principal of DeBasto Designs, adding that the enclosed part of the superstructure would be sole-to-ceiling glass. “It is enclosed because it’s facing forward and more exposed to the weather.” Looking from the inside out, guests would have sweeping views, but a treatment on the glass means the yacht also would offer privacy from the outside looking in. The glass would be tempered to withstand force, would have UV protection and could be fogged with the push of a button. The glass superstructure would be engineered

with much the same treatment as the captivating glass structures one sees at many of the Apple stores. “With leading-edge technology, the number of weight-bearing structures can be kept to a minimum to allow for a totally seamless effect,” de Jong says. While DeBasto has been designing a diverse range of yachts for two decades, the ﬁve-deck Vector is his new love. “Vector is pure,” he says. “The aft decks are open to nature, which is the natural approach to the layout of a long-range oceangoing vessel.” A hot tub would sit under the radar array for a bird’s-eye view of the surrounding seascape. Other features would include a beach club and wellness area, an aft-deck swimming pool and a bar with dual access from inside and outside the pool. DeBasto says the pool could even be surrounded by real sand, perhaps gathered from the ﬁnest beaches of Brazil—he says the grains could be kept slightly wet and protected with a canvas cover when not in use, for the ultimate in bringing the beach to the boat. “This collaboration with Oceanco is a harbinger of next-generation, over-80-meter vessels,” DeBasto says. “Plus the design is very versatile, as the overall concept can have many different shapes. Dragonﬂies and Bald Eagles The unique pleasures of cruising on small boats.

hen the metallic clank of the oarlocks stopped, it was so quiet you could hear the gentle hum of the four-winged dragonflies as they landed on the shiny green lily pads. A few more moments and you’d spot the protruding beak and eyes of a turtle, maybe the serpentine trail of a water moccasin as it traversed the swamp that flanked each side of the shallow, meandering creek. Venture too far, as I did on occasion, and you’d have to go overboard to push off from the muck, risking an attack by leeches, the evil little beasts that were the indomitable Bogie’s nemesis on the African Queen. That first vessel I commanded as a child was an old Chesapeake Bay rowboat, a “bespoke yacht” built of Virginia long-leaf pine, and my Tahiti was Marumsco Creek, now part of the Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge in Woodbridge, Virginia. Don’t get me wrong: I love big yachts and the opportunities they afford. Joni, my auburn-haired sweetheart, and I have fond memories of a week spent in the Virgin Islands enjoying life aboard a 120foot motoryacht while the folks back home shivered through the last gasps of winter. Cruising the waters surrounding the beautiful Door County peninsula aboard the 195-foot La Baronessa as Wisconsin’s magnificent autumn display of color passed by was incomparable, and sailing aboard the 289-foot Perini Navi Maltese Falcon as she passed along the stunning coastline of Italy’s Cinque Terre, near Portofino, was time well spent. Perhaps most memorable was not even at sea, but instead sitting on the aft deck of the 257-foot Abeking & Rasmussen Excellence IV, enjoying a drink as the sun set over the stone wall of Antibes’ old port. As wonderful as these experiences were, each one could just as well have been done on a smaller boat. In fact, on each occasion, smaller vessels shadowed our yacht, and I’d guess that the experiences were just as

memorable for the people aboard them as they were for me. There are, of course, some spots that can be enjoyed only aboard a large yacht, but for many cruisers, a smaller vessel should be an option. Even if you can afford it, bigger is not always better. Size is a relative term, and smaller doesn’t have to mean too small. During one September to remember—as the superyachts headed north on the Inside Passage to Alaska, confined to the main channel by their size— Joni and I spent 10 days exploring the hidden treasures of British Columbia’s Fiordland Conservancy aboard a 58-footer. Like my little rowboat from years before, this smaller craft offered a unique perspective. Once again, I could hear wings, but this time, not a dragonfly. It was a curious bald eagle passing within arm’s reach as we had a quiet breakfast on the flybridge. Morning also brought grizzlies and their young to dine on salmon along the beaches at the head of many of the fjords, and the frequent rain showers gave quick birth to waterfalls springing from the cliffs above. If you’re among the fortunate few, I certainly don’t begrudge you everything your big yacht affords. As a fortunate yachting journalist, I’ve sampled the lifestyle, and it’s very good. Just don’t overlook the additional delights that come only with a smaller boat. Carry one or two or a few with you on that big yacht. And for those, like me, who can’t afford the superyacht, don’t despair. You can still have one or two or a few. I peaked at nine and am now down to just four, but I’m shopping. Small boats can fulfill big dreams and make big memories.

Hugo Verlinden bought his ﬁrst Sanlorenzo, a 60-foot plywood boat, in 1978. It was close to the shipyard’s size limit at the time, so when he was ready for a larger boat, he had no choice but to look elsewhere. He eventually built two yachts with the Italian yard’s Dutch rival Heesen—all the more reason why his return to Sanlorenzo after nearly four decades was a cause for celebration. “After 39 years, we’re back!” exclaimed Verlinden, punching the air at the Seven Sins launch ceremony in La Spezia. The announcement earned him a cheer from the guests on the dock, who included the workforce responsible for building the 170-foot (52-meter) displacement yacht. It was a reunion that almost didn’t happen. Verlinden stepped

in only after the original buyer for the first 52Steel pulled out a year from delivery. A shrewd negotiator who has grown his family-owned insurance business into an international concern, the Belgian requested no fewer than 72 changes to the original specifications before signing on the dotted line. In terms of general concept, however, the 52Steel ticked all the right boxes as a family cruiser and commercial charter vessel in a stylish, sub-500-gross-ton package. The yacht continues Sanlorenzo’s evolution of metal superyachts beyond the 40Alloy, 46Steel and 460Exp (a 64Steel is also in build). For the 52Steel, the shipyard worked with Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta of Officina Italiana Design, best known for designing the current Riva range. “We took as our starting point the in-house Sanlorenzo style, but we were given a blank sheet to create a totally new design,” Micheli says. “The shipyard wanted clean, balanced styling that would remain relevant over time, which chimes perfectly with our own design philosophy. The result, inside and out, is discreetly contemporary design without superfluous or frivolous additions.” Micheli points to the soberly elegant lines that integrate the deck levels, and the full-height glazing in the main and upper deck salons with cutaways in the side bulwarks for unimpeded sea views while seated. The yacht is conceived with alfresco living in mind, so in addition to the customary social areas on the aft decks, there is lounging space and a dinette forward on the upper deck. Under the shade of the hardtop on the sundeck are lounge chairs, dining and a bar served by a dumbwaiter from the galley. There is also an exterior helm station— unusual on a yacht of this size and one of the many change orders requested by the owner, who likes to drive the yacht himself. The standout design feature is arguably the drive-in tender garage that Sanlorenzo engineered. It transforms into a beach club with a full-beam gym, sauna and steam room. When the louvered transom door is raised and the 26-foot (7.9meter) tender is floated out, a teaksoled platform lowers from the ceiling to cover the bay, and two lateral

shell doors in the hull can lower to extend the waterfront real estate. More natural light filters through the glass-bottomed swimming pool on the main deck above. (The crew tender and water toys are housed in a side-loading garage forward.) “I think Seven Sins is the only yacht of her size with a 15-foot pool equipped with active current for swimming,” Micheli says. “Most beach clubs can be quite cavernous places, but the skylights and three deployable platforms turn the space on this yacht into a light-filled saloon pied dans l’eau.” Chartering was a priority for Verlinden from the start. He shared ownership of his previous yachts with friends to allay the running costs. With Seven Sins, he included four partners while retaining a majority share. Fractional ownership has met with limited success in the yachting world, but Verlinden’s approach makes sound business sense for a yacht also destined for charter. His first rule is that the partners do not use the yacht during the peak charter season; the second is that if they have booked a week on board and a charter party wants the same slot, they change their own dates or pay the full charter rate. “The arrangement was based on a handshake, which is much better than hiring lawyers to draw up a long contract,” says Verlinden, who oversees the bookkeeping himself. “The trick is then to be able to look your partners in the eyes and still be friends 10 years down the line.”

In addition to the full-beam owner’s suite and office forward on the main deck, there are two VIP staterooms, two twins (one with beds that convert to doubles) on the lower deck and an upper-deck staff cabin abaft the wheelhouse. A formal dining room is rarely used on any yacht, so it was relocated from the traditional location in the main salon to the upper deck, with another table for a full complement of guests on the open aft deck. The palette of materials for the interior décor, also by Officina Italiana Design, is effortlessly stylish. American oak joinery with five different finishes is used alongside Carrara marble, white onyx, bronzed mirror surfaces and polished stainless steel detailing, along with freestanding furniture and accessories by Minotti, Flexform, Gae Aulenti and Paola Lenti, creating an overall effect that is calmly reassuring. From an operational perspective, an under-lower deck—another rare feature for a yacht this size—provides direct access from the crew quarters or engine room to the stabilizer compartments. A dedicated laundry room and additional cold stowage are on the same level. “Operational efficiency is something we take seriously, and the under-lower deck is a signature feature we’ve carried over from the 46Steel and 46Explorer,” says Antonio Santella, Sanlorenzo’s vice president of sales and marketing. “It allows the crew to go about their work discreetly without disturbing the guests.” As a seasoned yacht owner, Verlinden has had his share of ups and downs, but now in his mid-70s, his enthusiasm for yachting shows no sign of letting up. hether you call it St. Martin (as they do on the French side) or Sint Maarten (as they do on the Dutch side), this island is a popular destination for casinos, shopping and Caribbean resort life. Many superyachts base here, which means that arrival aboard Meteor is likely to include a chance to see some of the largest yachts in the whole of the Caribbean. Anguilla is a British territory with clear water that rings magnificent beaches. High-end resorts such as Malliouhana, Belmond Cap Juluca and CuisinArt Golf Resort & Spa attract the rich and famous. While celebrities go to the island of St. The horseshoe-shaped harbor of Barths to be seen, they go to Anguilla for privacy. ach island that is part of a yacht charter itinerary from St. Lucia to Grenada is a sovereign country with its own style and charm. The big islands are topographically sensational, with lush volcanic mountains, rich rainforest hikes and beachfront scenery. Scattered between St. Vincent and Grenada are dozens of smaller islands and cays, only a handful of which are inhabited. These islands, known as the Grenadines, are part of St. Vincent to the north and Grenada to the south. Marigot Bay at St. Lucia is one of the most idyllic protected harbors in the Caribbean, with dense, forested hills surrounding three sides. The Pitons on the southwestern end of St. Lucia make for as dramatic an anchorage as Marigot is bucolic. If charter guests plan to hike one of the Pitons, then the yacht’s crew can arrange for a local guide and an early start (it can get hot on the trail as the day wears on). These hikes are great aerobic adventures and allow for guilt-free dining on board the charter yacht afterward, along with a swim to cool off and perhaps an afternoon nap on the sundeck. Rarely on the radar for travelers, St. Vincent is a sleeper of a tourist island that a charter yacht can access. This Caribbean island’s interior is as lush and tropical as Bali’s or Tahiti’s in Indonesia or the South Paciﬁc. Cumberland Bay is ringed in palm trees and has a volcanic black sand beach. On Mayreau, the smallest of the inhabited islands in the Grenadines, wake up in the lovely cove known as Salt Whistle Bay. From here, the Tobago Cays and Canouan are close by. The Tobago Cays is a marine park of ﬁve uninhabited islands with great snorkeling and diving, and the chance to spot green, hawksbill and leatherback turtles. Canouan has been developed quite a bit during the past 25 years, creating a contrast with the sleepy local culture. The Tamarind Beach Hotel is here with a golf course and spa where the charter yacht’s crew can make reservations for guests who want to go ashore and indulge. Grenada is a large and diverse island with a lot to offer. Some charter guests choose to disembark here and stay an extra day or two on land, to hike to the waterfalls in Grand Etang National Park, tour a chocolate factory, see parrots and monkeys in the rainforest, and shop for nutmeg and other spices in the thriving St. George’s market.

he only problem for an Exumas charter client is determining how to take everything these 365 vibrant islands and tiny cays offer and squeeze it into a seven-day itinerary. This archipelago is a pristine retreat just a short distance from the U.S. mainland, accessible via direct flights into Nassau and then, if part of the itinerary, a short hopper flight to the heart of the islands. The Exumas are quite a contrast from the more touristy parts of the Bahamas, with white sand beaches, translucent waters and untouched reefs. Compass Cay offers charter guests an opportunity to swim with—and pet— the resident nurse sharks. Do it. These sharks may as well be rough-skinned puppies, as curious about people as we are about them. Charter guests must mind their fingers (as the yacht’s crew will helpfully instruct as they stand by and watch) and then the experience is exhilarating. Some charter clients say that meeting the nurse sharks at Compass Cay is one of the best memories not only of their vacation, but also of their life. Just around the corner is one of the best swimming holes in the Caribbean. The deep, crystalclear, blue lagoon known as Rachel’s Bubble Bath gets its name from the wave action. A rocky outcrop detaches the pool from the ocean, and at mid- to high tide, the waves get high enough to crash over the rocks and into the lagoon, creating bubbles of white foam like a natural spa tub. The spot is ideal for a swim or a well-timed leap off the rocks into the water. With so many unspoiled cays, charter guests here often have beaches all to themselves—except at Big Major’s Cay, a small, uninhabited island where resident pigs, some quite large, swim out to greet people on the incoming tenders. The pigs are friendly, especially if they see that food is available (the yacht’s crew will prepare carrots and the like), but the pigs are wild animals, so the crew will help guests to treat them respectfully. Near the pigs’ home is Thunderball Grotto, named for the James Bond movie “Thunderball.” The grotto’s entrance is small, almost hidden—and to get inside, even at ebb tide, charter guests have to hold their breath, dive underwater and swim for it, trusting that they will come up able to breathe on the other side. (Don’t sweat it; the yacht’s capable crew have done this many times and will be right there.) A rare dichotomy exists when venturing to such a raw and rugged aquatic playground aboard a superyacht. Sydney Harbour, from end to end, is barely 7 nautical miles. Looking at its countless inlets and harbors on a chart, though, is like trying to decipher a Rorschach test, and seeing its shores from the water is an exercise in limitless cultural diversity. As I sit on the bow of the 120-foot (36.6-meter) Oceanfast Sahana, cruising past the Sydney Opera House and beyond, I see architecture that looks classic European, then contemporary, then American Colonial. Lobster boats that would fare well in Maine cruise by, followed by express cruisers reminiscent of southeast Florida and seaplanes evocative of the Pacific Northwest. An occasional military craft reminds me of cruising in Maryland near the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. I look to starboard and see the cityscape, a blend of skyscrapers and historic buildings alongside the Sydney Harbour Bridge’s 440-foot-tall (134-meter) steel arch. Waterway traffic buzzes like Newport Harbor in Rhode Island on a Saturday in July, and pedestrians scamper along the sidewalks and in the waterfront parks, looking just like the New Yorkers who wave at boats cruising up the Hudson River. I look to port and see a handful of family boats at anchor next to a beach, all surrounded by a forest of eucalyptus (or gum trees, as the locals would say). The untouched landscape might as well be a back cove off the Intracoastal Waterway in Georgia or South Carolina, save for the occasional call of the native kookaburra bird. A stewardess makes her way to the bow with a tray of hors d’oeuvres: compressed watermelon with Persian feta cheese and olive salt on French-style brioche. It would be followed by local Coffin Bay oysters with pickled cucumbers and a Vietnamese sauce. The chef ’s style of cooking, she tells me, is fusion. Of course it is. Australia is a bucket-list charter destination for many Americans, a place whose cultural distinctness is born of variety. The continent is a cross-section of the world, and Sydney, one of its largest cities, offers a bit of everything.

Sahana, one of the largest yachts for charter here, is much the same. She alternates seasons between Sydney (October through April) and the Whitsundays/Great Barrier Reef region (April through September). For Americans booking a charter during the upcoming season, Capt. Paul Busk, a native Aussie, recommends three days in Sydney and three or four days along the nearby Hawkesbury River. “This is city buzz,” he says of Sydney. “Go to the restaurants. And the harbor’s really cool at night. Christmas, New Year’s, Australia Day on January 25— the Sydney-Hobart race starts here, and that’s a massive event. They’ll use any excuse for ﬁreworks here.’” Busk is right about the enticing shoreside

attractions, but during mealtimes, I’d stick with Clancy Atkinson, a freelance chef who, during my charter, was joining Sahana for his ﬁrst stint with the yacht’s permanent crew. Atkinson is a Brisbane native who grew up in remote Darwin with what he calls “a lot of multicultural refugees. So the food scene is more advanced there, maybe more than anywhere else in the world. I learned by going to my mates’ houses. I’d be in the kitchen with their mums while they were outside playing.” His passion led him to train with one of Australia’s most celebrated chefs, Russell Armstrong, and then to cater for companies including Louis Vuitton and Gucci during the days when Tom Ford was creative director. “He had guidelines for everything to do with the brand: how much water goes in every glass, how many canapés on each tray,” Atkinson says. “From him, I learned precision. I had to. He was a perfectionist.” Hence those colorful, ﬂavorful and noticeably

His father was a ship designer, and Utzon used nautical charts to learn the landscape his building would occupy. Even the opera house’s practical elements are marine-inspired: There are no gutters; rain falls into gaps in the concrete walkways and then drains to the sea, as with scuppers. The opera house puts on about 2,000 live performances each year in various theaters, and its 2,679-seat concert hall feels like a cathedral. The grand organ has 138 visible pipes out of 10,244 that continue behind a wall, and is believed to be the largest such organ in the world. One musician who tried to control its ﬁve keyboards, pedal board and 172 stops for air ﬂow called the experience “like wrestling a monster.” sydneyoperahouse.com

uniform watermelon bites with feta on brioche that I enjoyed on Sahana’s bow, one of several spaces on the yacht that were rebuilt after the 2008 launch got her current owner in 2013. He gutted the salon, staterooms and bridge deck aft, which went from carrying tenders to having a nearly full-beam bar along with sunning and shaded lounge space. The interior décor is now chic in grays and whites, including a prominent black-and-white photo of America’s favorite son, Ol’ Blue Eyes. “He likes contemporary cool,” Busk says of Sahana’s owner. “He’s a jazz singer, and he loves Sinatra.” The owner also is prone to seasickness, which is why Sahana has ABT-Trac at-rest stabilizers, two Seakeeper gyros and extra soundprooﬁng in the guest areas, to ease noise and vibration. I, too, am haunted by the green

monster, and I felt great aboard Sahana, both in busy Sydney Harbour and when we cruised from Palm Beach, in Pittwater, to Cowan Creek for watersports fun. Cowan Creek, just a few hours from Sydney at 10 knots, looked and felt like New England in September, with water warm enough for a refreshing swim and a handful of sandy beaches plus rocky trails amid a shoreline of green foliage and vacation homes. “Outside of Christmas and Easter,” Busk says, “it’s not a lot of trafﬁc here. You can get a bay to yourself.” Another great spot, he says, is Middle Harbour. “It’s really pretty,” Busk says. “You sit in Sugarloaf Bay, and it’s like rainforest. You have no idea you’re near a city.” I believe it. And I’d be darn curious to stay on charter an extra few days, just to see whatever lies beyond the next harbor, too. EVERY YACHT REVIEW seems to start by oohing about the stylish lines or aahing about the salon or going gaga about the master suite. I’m starting this review of the Horizon Raised Pilothouse 120 in a different place: the crew quarters. And then I’m going to talk about the tender garage. Why? Because those two spaces—which on some yachts can be reminiscent of third-world prison cells— are finely finished aboard the Horizon RP120, showing that the builder’s attention to detail goes far beyond the spaces that usually get noticed. The crew quarters are satin-finished in warm teak, with three cabins for a crew of six. The captain gets a double with an ensuite head and stall shower, while the other two cabins have crossed berths and share a head with shower. The crew area also has a mini-galley (with cooktop and stand-up fridge) and a table with settee that seats six. Access is through stairs from a side deck door while underway, or via the transom at rest. Given the way these quarters compare to some others I’ve seen, owners should expect a waiting list of crew wanting to work from these digs. Just outside the crew quarters is the tender garage, also impeccably finished. It serves as a teak beach for owners and guests. A stainless steel counter doubles as a buffet or, when needed, a workbench. A day head is tucked in one corner so guests needn’t track through the yacht in wet bathing suits. The tender on our test RP120 was a 14-foot-10inch (4.45-meter) Williams Turbojet 445, which still left a lot of room in the garage. A crane in the garage

launches and retrieves the tender, and the transom platform lowers hydraulically. Only the center section of the platform submerges, leaving two “pontoons” extending on each side to ease tender handling. As for the parts of the yacht that typically get more attention, the salon is pretty swell, too. Luca Dini Design in Florence, Italy, called the shots on the décor, drawing on pale “breeze oak” for a whitewashed look. A piping texture on the cabinetry ties the décor together throughout the yacht. Stepping into the salon from the aft deck, there’s a sunken bar to starboard with movable stools for guests at the counter. In the port corner of the salon is a day head. Horizon will rearrange the salon at an owner’s request; aboard this RP120, an L-shaped couch gives guests a panoramic view when seated. The space becomes a media room with the Roman blinds lowered and the pop-up TV popped. The forward third of this RP120’s salon is devoted to dining for 10, with buffets on each side. Luca Dini Design placed a wood-slatted mirror on the forward bulkhead that gives the hint of a longer salon. The galley to port runs fore and aft with an electric pocket door to keep guests from seeing the chef at work. Inside are dual Sub-Zero fridges, an extra freezer and stowage. The galley has a pantograph door to the side deck, so the crew can load provisions without tramping through the salon past the guests. To starboard of the dining area is a passageway, also with pocket door, to the raised pilothouse and the owner’s suite. Another stowage area is under the pilothouse with electronics neatly racked for service. (The thought occurred that this space was large enough to

Down three steps forward is the master bathroom with twin vessel sinks, veined pale green marble (on this 120) and a tub and shower. His-andher closets bookend the area. The lower deck has democratic accommodations, with two matching VIPs abaft the foyer and two ensuite

guest staterooms forward with twin berths. Up in the pilothouse are settees and tables for guests to watch the action. Next to the helm chair is a table for those ancient nav tools called charts. A few steps up from the pilothouse is the ﬂybridge, with more than half covered by a hardtop with built-in sunroof. An upper helm is tucked to port, and the rest of the bridge is given over to pure hedonism. An L-shaped bar is to starboard, and a buffet area for munchies is to

The Monaco Yacht Show arguably is the planet’s best place to discover the world’s latest superyacht launches. More than 125 boats with a combined value of more than $3 billion are expected to be on display at this year’s show. Nearly 600 exhibitors are scheduled to join them: builders, designers, equipment manufacturers, brokerage houses, luxury suppliers, aircraft companies and luxury automobiles. very charter captain who’s been in the industry long enough has had to explain the 12-guest limit on board. While a growing number of charter clients understand the rules, limits can still be a point of contention. During my career as a charter captain, I’ve heard all the arguments, from “I know the maximum is 12 sleeping, but some of us won’t sleep—we plan to party all night” to “I’m only asking for a extra few friends on board, and there are plenty of couches, so what’s the big deal?” Another common angle is to discount children for being small, as if they can be stowed in a closet. The past 15 to 20 years have seen big changes in the charter industry, including the introduction of cruising regulations with such acronyms as ISM, ISPS, MLC, LY3 and, now, PYC—a certiﬁcation that

allows yachts to charter with as many as 36 guests plus crew, if owners choose to build or reﬁt their yachts to the PYC standard. The Red Ensign Group developed the PYC to let vessels carry as many as 36 guests without having to build to the arduous SOLAS requirements, which are intended more for ships and can wreak havoc on luxury yacht aesthetics. PYC outlines a new set of technical, safety and operational standards speciﬁc to the size and use of a private vessel, providing the same level of safety as SOLAS while ensuring that the owner can get the greatest amount of enjoyment from his yacht. The construction process requires consideration of regulatory aspects at every stage, from operations to functionality. For clients who are considering building

superyachts to the PYC standard, the decision typically comes down to how they plan to use the boat. Shipbuilders are keen to embrace the code, says Robert Tan, sales manager at Oceanco, who adds that builders and designers are trying to keep the costs of PYC competitive. Even clients experienced with the LY3 standard can be surprised by the intricacies of PYC, particularly when it comes to price. There are several code compliance differences between LY3 (for yachts with a maximum of 12 guests) and PYC (for yachts with 12 to 36 guests), all focused on safety while accommodating additional guests and crew. For instance, construction and ﬁnishing process materials must meet requirements to reduce the spread of ﬁre. Veneers must be a certain thickness. Fabrics must meet stricter compliance levels. Escape routes must adhere to lower

flammability characteristics, with fixed ladders instead of drop-down ladders to expedite an evacuation. Then there’s construction: Heavier emphasis is placed on keeping the vessel afloat instead of having to abandon it. More watertight compartments are required: even the engine room space must be segmented. At press time, seven or eight yachts afloat were certified to PYC, with at least 20 more in build for delivery during the next five years. There is no limit on length overall, however, 262 feet (80 meters) currently represents the smaller end of the scale. PYC is now in its seventh revised edition, with the former edition seeing the inclusion of sailing yachts. The code is here to stay, so if you’re an owner building new or doing a major refit, it’s worth a chat with your project manager to discuss building to the PYC standard— especially if your plans involve charter.

She also started dating her future husband, Donoven, who was from her hometown. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were absolutely besotted with each other,â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We found old teenage photos where he is standing behind me at a party, but amazingly, we had never met in those years.â&#x20AC;? Two months after their ďŹ rst date, she received a job offer in the South PaciďŹ c, kissed her sweetheart goodbye and joined the 191-foot (58.3-meter) Trinity Unbridled as a junior stewardess. Travels ensued in Bora Bora, New Caledonia, Fiji and New Zealand. She learned from the chief stewardess, and two things became apparent: She was going to pursue her newfound career, and she was not going to give up on the boy back home. Cristin and Donoven married in between jobs and went on a six-week backpacking honeymoon through Asia and Indonesia. They then landed positions together aboard Moka. ot everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere.” That quote, from imperious food critic Anton Ego in the Pixar culinary cartoon “Ratatouille,” is ingrained in the soul of Michael Creighton, chef on the 130-foot [39.6meter] Westport Aphrodite. Creighton moved with his family from Boston to southern Alaska at age 8. It was his parents’ intention to start an organic vegetable farm. By age 10, he was cooking regularly for his family of eight. “I told my mother—an incredible chef—that I wanted to learn how to cook,” Creighton recalls. “She said, ‘First you need to learn about growing food.’ It wasn’t until years later that I understood the importance of that.” Creighton is interested in farm-to-table cuisine because fresh food means subtle flavors combining well. He doesn’t like to cook with, say, a lot of butter, because its flavor overwhelms a dish. “But take a carrot, for example,” he says. “You can grow a carrot in two completely different fields, and the unique qualities of each field will render the carrot’s taste dramatically.” Creighton joined the yachting industry at the urging of his older brother, a yacht captain. Creighton had attended a vegan culinary school in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts, schooling that he downplayed so as not to be pegged as a “vegan chef.” But the industry trend of healthy living suited his arsenal of expertise, especially macrobiotic cuisine (based on the theory that the body prefers foods that grow naturally in the local ecosystem). He credits macrobiotic expert—and at one time pop singer Madonna’s personal chef—Mayumi Nishimura as one of his inspirations, and has cooked for the actor Owen Wilson. “I was on Maui in Willie Nelson’s bar having a few beers and Owen Wilson was there,” he says. “We start chatting. It turns out he’s into macrobiotics, too. The next day, he invites me out to dinner and I’m like, ‘Why don’t I just cook?’ So he has all of his friends and me over to his house and I make dinner. It was wonderful.” Like most experienced charter chefs, Creighton is proficient in many cuisines, but he wastes no time naming Japanese as a specialty.

s summer comes to an end, great chefs look for rustic, earthy and briny ingredients. Flavors, components and textures become more complex. Fish dishes are heartier, proteins are deeper red in color, and desserts are richer to the point of decadence. This Asianthemed menu is a good example of that approach and calls for wines that are just as thoughtfully considered. The first course of maki screams for a high-quality, chilled saké. The ocean flavors will pair nicely with Rock Saké’s Junmai Daiginjo, made in Oregon. This finely milled, refreshing rice wine has notes of lychee and pear, and a hint of white peach, with briny mineral on the finish. The main course is a Japanese specialty of shiitake-glazed wagyu sirloin. The tender, delicate flesh of this prized beef, along with the savory, sweet and earthy flavors, needs a delicate but complex red such as the Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru by Jean-ClaudeBoisset, Burgundy, France, 2007. This elegant pinot noir has just the right tannin structure, maturity, and blend of exotic spices and earth tones for the savviest foodies. For the silky, rich and sweet dessert of duck egg vanilla bean creme brûlée, try the Château Guiraud Premier Cru Sauternes from Bordeaux, France. It is made from 65 percent semillon and Rock Saké’s Junmai 35 percent sauvignon blanc. Aromas of Daiginjo, $30 orange marmalade, honeysuckle and lemon curd blend with a pleasant note Charmesof botrytis and mineral. On the palate, Chambertin Grand it is rich and lusciously sweet, balanced Cru by Jean-Claudeby mouthwatering acidity. Flavors of ripe Boisset, $140 mango, macerated apricot and sweet tangerine dominate on the long, memoChâteau Guiraud rable finish. Approaching almost 14 years Premier Cru of age, this “nectar of the gods” has loads Sauternes, $50 of bright fresh fruit and youth left—a fantastic finish to this meal.

“I spent a year living with a Japanese family as a teen,” he says. “I picked up a lot of the language and, evidently, a strong passion for sushi and Japanese food.” Outside of the galley, Creighton’s hobbies include ﬂying down mountains on a bike, a snowboard or skis; driving pretty much anything (boats, planes, race cars) as long as it’s fast and … yoga. “I’m sort of an adrenaline junkie,” he says with a laugh. “That’s where yoga comes in. It centers my energy. I also teach yoga on board from time to time. But that’s all just for fun.” He points to the galley and adds, “This is my passion.” Having joined the Aphrodite crew a few months ago, Creighton found a positive work environment. “Morale on board is so high,” he says. “It’s genuine. We have a really tight crew, and we work well together below deck. J Class Renaissance The J Class, arguably among the most beautiful sailing yachts ever to cross a start line, has seen a major resurgence in recent years, with six new hulls commissioned and two more on the way, augmenting the three survivors from the 1930s.
