I

talked to my best friend, Kim, the other day, and she told me that she and her husband recently met with their financial planner, and among other things, were told they really needed to decide within the next two weeks where their 2-year-old son would attend elementary school. So I’m officially behind on school selection, according to at least one Dallas-Fort Worth financial planner. I spent a good part of this last year researching preschool teaching philosophies and going on school tours. (Genevieve finally starts her first year of preschool this month.) But now, rather than savor this milestone, I feel like I have to jump into elementary school selection. Thankfully, this issue is packed with lots of very useful information to assist me — and you. I’m starting with “The Private School List” on page 30. Though it’s not exhaustive, it’s very comprehensive and lets you compare schools based on some basic information such as tuition, class size and religious affiliation. Once you’ve narrowed the field, do what I did, and set up several school tours at the campuses that look like a good fit for your family — at least on paper. If you’re parenting an infant or toddler, you might be starting to think preschool (some schools’ programs begin at 18 months). In that case, turn to “Preschool 101” on page 22 to figure out if your little one is even ready, then get tips on what to consider when selecting a school and find advice from local parents. And financial planners be damned. Even if you have a school-age kid, it’s not too late to pick a school or make a change. Just don’t be hasty with your decision. Research the options. May I suggest first reading “Texas-Size Education” on page 26? Let author Brooke Conley school you in the vast number of options. It’s not just a question of public or private anymore. There are charter schools, International Baccalaureate programs and parochial schools, just to name a few. So whether you’re prepping for your very first, first day of school picture or have several years already captured in your Facebook memories, let this book be your guide to your child’s education.

o you ever wonder what your children learn at school? They may not always be forthcoming, but we are. The grade-by-grade portraits — from kindergarten through eighth grade — in this guide summarize what’s covered at each level in English and language arts, science, social studies and math. Though curriculums do vary slightly from school to school, these insights give you a general sense of what to expect.

We’ve reviewed the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills guidelines and highlighted the top lessons to be learned each year. CRACKING MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES how different intelligences affect learning WORDS LISA POISSO

I

©ISTOCK.COM/USSR

s a child with a knack for math really any smarter than a child with a talent for drawing? How about the girl who dances like a natural ballerina or the boy with the quick wit? Which child is the most “intelligent?” As you position your brood to reap the richest harvest possible from another year of school, you may catch teachers talking about “multiple intelligences” — literally, the ways that people are smart. While the theory of multiple intelligences is viewed critically in scientific circles, the practice of identifying and supporting a wide variety of aptitudes helps educators draw out the best in their young students. The idea of multiple intelligences took hold in the early ’80s when Harvard professor Howard Gardner originally identified seven “intelligences” or paths to approach and process information. These descriptions (from Multiple Intelligences Research and Consulting) may help you pinpoint familiar territory in your own children. LINGUISTIC INTELLIGENCE – “Word smart” or sensitive to the meaning and order of words;

characteristic in journalists, speech pathologists and lawyers. • Expressive sensitivity: skillfully commands words for expressive and practical purposes • Rhetorical skill: employs language effectively for interpersonal negotiation and persuasion • Written-academic skill: uses words well in writing reports, letters, stories, verbal memory, reading and writing LOGICAL-MATHEMATICAL INTELLIGENCE – “Number/rea-

soning smart” or being adept in mathematics and other complex logical systems; found in accountants, engineers and physicians. • School math skills: performs well in math at school • Everyday math skills: uses math effectively in everyday life • Everyday problem-solving: applies logical reasoning to solve everyday problems; curious • Strategic thinker: excels at games of skill and strategy dfwchild.com / 2017

MUSICAL INTELLIGENCE – “Music smart” or understanding and creating music; often musicians, composers and dancers show a heightened musical intelligence. • Vocal ability: possesses a good voice for singing in tune and in harmony • Instrumental skill: demonstrates skill and experience in playing a musical instrument • Desire to compose: makes up songs or poetry and has tunes on the brain • Keen music appreciation: actively enjoys listening to music of some kind SPATIAL INTELLIGENCE – “Picture smart” or perceiving the visual world accurately and recreating (or altering) it in the mind or on paper; highly developed in artists, architects, designers and sculptors. • Space awareness: solves problems of spatial orientation and moving objects through space, such as driving a car • Works with objects: makes, builds, fixes or assembles • Artistic bent: creates artistic designs, drawings, paintings BODILY-KINESTHETIC INTELLIGENCE – “Body smart”

or moving one’s body in a skilled way as self-expression or toward a goal; displayed in mimes, dancers, basketball players and actors. • Athletic: skilled at physical activities such as balancing, coordination and sports • Dexterous: uses hands with dexterity and skill for detailed activities and expressive movement INTERPERSONAL INTELLIGENCE – “People

smart” or intuitively understanding individuals and their moods, desires and motivations; highly developed among political and religious leaders, skilled parents, teachers and therapists. • Social sensitivity: sensitive to and empathetic to other people’s moods, feelings and points of view • Social persuasion: shows an ability to influence other people • Interpersonal work: demonstrates interest and skill for jobs involving working with people

PRESCHOOL 101 finding the right time and place for your child to start school WORDS KATHY SENA & LARA KRUPICKA

W

hen Nicholas was about to turn 3, Deena Nenad, his mom, assumed he’d begin preschool right after his birthday “because all my friends’ kids were starting preschool at 3,” she says. But after Nicholas started school, “he was crying the whole time and fighting with other kids,” she remembers. “He’d tell us, ‘I don’t like it. I don’t want to go.’ The director told me there was no reason kids have to start at 3, so we took him out.”

When Nicholas tried preschool again at 4, “he did great, and he really loved it,” Nenad says. “I’m glad we waited.” KNOWN BENEFITS

Educators have long praised preschool as a way to get kids off to a great start — emotionally, socially and intellectually. Researchers found, in one study, that the benefits of attending preschool prior to kindergarten contribute significantly to a child’s later success in school. As early as fourth grade, children who had attended preschool displayed a greater advantage in both reading and math. That’s because these children had exposure to the school and learning environment before “school” even started, the researchers concluded. But how do parents decide when preschool is right for their child? As the Nenad family learned, sometimes you just have to give it a try and then determine how your child is adjusting after the first week or two. MATURITY, NOT AGE

“All children can benefit from one year of preschool before entering kindergarten, especially if they’re

in a developmentally appropriate curriculum,” says Bonnie Bruce, a child-development specialist in private practice. But it’s important for parents to know their child’s needs and maturity level, she emphasizes. “Not all children should enter preschool based on a birthday. You can’t teach maturation,” Bruce says. While intellectual skills are becoming increasingly important in early elementary school, now’s not the time to focus heavily on such things, says Dr. Sal Severe, a psychologist and author of How to Behave So Your Children Will, Too! “The cognitive stuff will come at a certain point,” he says. Parents need to remember that preschool readiness is “more about emotional and social development and about getting along with other kids.” IF YOU DECIDE TO WAIT

Even if your child isn’t yet ready for school, you can provide experiences that will help prepare him to enjoy a preschool environment. Now’s the time to arrange playdates, neighborhood playgroups and mommyand-me classes, Bruce suggests. All will help your child learn

social skills that will serve her well in preschool and beyond. The summer before starting preschool may be the perfect time for kids to get their feet wet. Many preschools have shorter summer programs that may include gym classes, swimming or other summer activities. Some offer shorter schedules or weeklong, morning-only camps that may be just the right introduction for a child who’s a bit hesitant about school. TIME TO CHOOSE

If your child is ready for preschool now, the selection process can be a daunting one — and one you have to start early. But you can soften the stress by narrowing your criteria ahead of time. Here are some considerations to take into account in your search: Time: You may remember going to preschool for a few hours a day, two or three days a week. And while those options exist, some preschools offer fullday, five-day-a-week preschool or a combination of child care and preschool. Decide how many days and for how long your child will go. Teaching philosophy: Knowing your goals for preschool can help you decide which preschool philosophy and style might fit best. Play-based schools target developmental and social growth and encourage childdirected learning. A traditional preschool with an academic focus has more structure and is teacherdirected. Co-op preschools rely heavily on parental participation. Other types of preschools include dfwchild.com / 2017

nature-oriented, religious-affiliated and bilingual. Location: Consider how far you want to drive and whether you want your child to be around preschoolers who will attend the same elementary school in future years. You may be willing to drive to a more distant school with a good reputation. Or you may find a preschool along your commute to work more convenient. Size: More reserved children may fare better in a more intimate setting, while other preschoolers thrive in a bustling room with lots of kids. Don’t forget to note how many students there are per adult in the classroom. A larger class with a teacher and several aides may allow your child more one-onone attention than a small class served by a single teacher. Multiyear options: If your child’s birthday falls close to the elementary enrollment cutoff date, you may want them to attend more than one year of preschool. Many preschools offer age-based classes, but you may also find that a preschool class followed by a pre-K class works for your family.

MAKING THE TRANSITION

After choosing a school that seems right for your child, the hardest part — for your child and you — is dropping them off on Day One. To help those initial days and weeks go smoothly, head to the library or bookstore and share a few books about going to school — and separating from Mom and Dad — for the first time. A few recommendations: Barney & Baby Bop Go To School by Mark S. Bernthal, The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn, Timothy Goes to School by Rosemary Wells and Franklin Goes to School by Paulette Bourgeois. A few days before school starts, walk the preschool grounds together, suggests Bruce. Introduce your child to his teacher and check out classroom activities that you can talk about at home. When visiting with the teacher, you may want to ask about school routines and then try to follow some of them at home, suggests Becci Lukes, a preschool director. “Making home and school routines similar is reassuring for children,” she says.

You should also tell your child what will happen on the first day of school. Be specific. Let her know you’re only going to stay for a few minutes because the teacher will want to start class and explain the day’s fun activities. Describe what your child can expect during the school day, and tell her when you’ll return. Experts say you may want to ease kids in, starting with a shorter day first and gradually letting them stay longer over the course of the first week. And on the day of, don’t linger when saying goodbye. If your child begins crying when it’s time for you to leave, lingering at the door usually makes things worse, teachers say. Fortunately, the tears usually don’t last more than a few minutes. Eventually your child will settle in to the new routine (maybe even faster than you do). When he is happily enjoying his new friends and surroundings, take pictures. Then help him put together a simple “My Preschool” collage or scrapbook at home. As you look at the photos together, talk about story time, snack time and your child’s favorite classroom activities.

“Don’t expect that the preschool you pick is the only preschool your kids will ever go to — staffs change, kids change, situations change. The preschool you choose first might end up being a stepping stone. And that’s OK.” —Kelly, Dallas “Don’t put too much stock into what other moms say about a school and/or its teachers. Take their recommendations, but go see the place for yourself.” —Jonna, Bedford “Tour a few. You don’t always know what you like until you see what you don’t like.” —April, Lewisville “Ask about teacher turnover rate. A high rate is a red flag. Also, is it nonprofit or for-profit? A nonprofit will invest back into the organization, staff and teachers. A for-profit school may be more concerned with the bottom line.” —Mark, Prosper

“I chose a preschool because when I toured on some random day, I saw sheer joy and happiness on the teachers’ faces. It was obvious that they love their job.” —Natalie, Dallas “What are the kids doing when you visit? Kids should be doing lots of hands-on projects with other kids. Child-led discovery and plenty of playtime are key.” —Jane, Coppell “Make sure the hours and school breaks work with your schedule. We loved our first preschool, but they had a break for every holiday; it felt like the kids were off every week.” —Corinne, Southlake

TEXAS-SIZE EDUCATION

the ultimate parent’s guide to dallas-fort worth schooling options WORDS BROOKE CONLEY

S

chools are not one-size-fits-all. In fact, when it comes to choosing the appropriate education path for your child, the options are as unique and expansive as she is. Google types of schools for your school-age child, and you get a dizzying array of options: public, charter, parochial, Montessori, international and more. Dallas-Fort Worth is home to some of the best schools in the nation (just check U.S. News and World Report), but with so many choices, making the right decision can be overwhelming — whether you’re navigating kindergarten for the first time, or you’re transferring from another city. Relax. We’re here to help. Below, we’ve explained each of the options to help you find the one that fits your kiddo best.

©ISTOCK.COM/GIRAFCHIK123

PUBLIC SCHOOLS

There are several Dallas-Fort Worth districts listed in the top 100 each year. And 2017 is no different. In fact, there are a handful of exemplary public schools in the area, where students perform at very high levels. These schools receive nominations for national Blue Ribbon honors. Transplants often list public education as a top reason for relocating here. Public schools focus on a set curriculum for kids starting in preschool and going up through the 12th grade. Funded by the taxes you pay, these institutions provide accessible education to every child, regardless of socioeconomic status, for free, and schools are assigned according to district zoning lines. To find districts in your area, visit collincountytexas.us, dallascountytexas.us, dentoncountytexas.us or access.tarrantcounty.com.

CHARTER SCHOOLS

In 1995, the Texas Legislature authorized the establishment of charter schools to give parents more choices in the public education arena. Much like independent school districts (ISDs), charter schools receive public money so they’re free, but they aren’t held to the same district and state regulations. Instead, they are judged by how well (or not) they meet the student achievement goals established by their charter. Admission requirements often vary from school to school — from an application and interview or audition, to availability or a lottery system. txcharterschools.org INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE SCHOOLS

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a foundation that offers four international educational dfwchild.com / 2017

programs and standardized curriculums. Concentrating on a global thought process, IB students are exposed to challenging, highquality international standards of education. The IB focuses on intellectual, social and interpersonal skills and encourages students to view themselves as part of the larger global community. The IB works with schools and educators around the world to offer consistent and quality education, a standard that has long kept the program popular among diplomatic and military families. There are over a dozen public and charter schools offering IB Primary Year Programmes for children ages 3–12 in the DallasFort Worth area. ibo.org texasibschools.org/members PRIVATE SCHOOLS

There are nearly 350 private elementary schools in Collin, Dallas, Denton and Tarrant counties combined, and the parents of over 70,000 kids opt to send their school-age children to these institutions — many of them faithbased (about two-thirds in Collin, Dallas and Denton Counties and three-fourths in Tarrant County). Private schools charge tuition and are dictated by their own set of admission and academic standards, and they vary widely in curriculum and accreditation. Most provide smaller class sizes and therefore require an interview or test as part of the application and acceptance process. To compare tuitions, accreditations and more, check out our Private School Guide on page 30. PAROCHIAL SCHOOLS

Private schools operated by religious affiliations or organizations center around particular church or faith teachings. In addition to traditional academics, parochial curriculums include religious education, with many requiring church, chapel or synagogue services as part of each student’s daily or weekly routine, a selling point for lots of parents. Like private schools, parochial schools

are tuition-based, and each school sets academic and admission standards that are in line with their governing church or religious association. BOARDING SCHOOLS

Boarding schools are independent private schools at which some or all of the students live on campus during the school year and are most common for students between the eighth and 12th grades (though junior boarding schools offer the full experience to kids as young as kindergarten). The few junior boarding schools in the Dallas-Fort Worth area have a combination of boarding and day students and have competitive admissions requirements too. boardingschoolreview.com/texas hockaday.org tams.unt.edu MONTESSORI SCHOOLS

Dr. Maria Montessori established her unconventional approach to education over a century ago in Italy. The Montessori method takes a self-directed learning approach, meaning each student decides what he or she wants to work on each day. Students are grouped into mixed-age classrooms and allowed large blocks of time to work independently on a curriculum that includes math, language, geography, cultural studies, music, movement and practical life skills. Many parents like the independence that a Montessori education affords and champion the abstract teaching format for utilizing exploration and purposeful activity as a means for development and growth. amshq.org DISTANCE LEARNING

Parents are drawn to distance learning — even at the elementary level — for practical reasons: The family travels extensively, their child can take courses not offered locally or they can complete coursework at home, on their own schedule. Curriculums are typically set on an individual basis, with both paced and self-

paced models available. And the more sophisticated online schools offer students real-time classrooms with the teacher and other students; regularly scheduled and as-needed contact with the teacher via email or phone, assignments based in the real world, even a chance to join group projects. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) offers a virtual school network of online courses taught by state-certified and appropriately credentialed teachers to eligible public and charter school students in grades 3–12. tea.texas.gov HOME-SCHOOLING

Like distance learning, homeschooling can be especially beneficial for a child who may have unique learning patterns or differences, or who may thrive without the pressure of social and structural restraints. Homeschooling, however, puts parents in charge of their child’s education (the Texas Home School Coalition Association offers lots of resources), which must include a written curriculum for reading, spelling, grammar, math and good citizenship. However, the state of Texas does not award diplomas to homeschooled students. thsc.org SPECIAL EDUCATION

While every child has the legal right to attend public school and many children with special needs and learning differences do well in a full-inclusion or mainstream environment, there are lots of schools in the Dallas-Fort Worth area (more than 20) for parents seeking specific curriculums molded to their child’s unique abilities. Children with diagnoses ranging from ADHD and dyslexia to autism and Down syndrome often excel within specialized environments that can help them build confidence, intelligence and skill sets. privateschoolreview.com/texas/ special-education-private-schools/ elementary risedallas.org

Our comprehensive guide to Dallas-Fort Worth private schools

F

inding a school that is the right fit for your children, your lifestyle and your wallet can be a daunting task. Luckily, the Dallas-Fort Worth area has such a vast number of options when it comes to private schools that the toughest part of the search isn’t finding a suitable campus, but rather narrowing a long list of contenders down to one. There are schools that fit nearly every learning style, budget and desired class size. So how do you decide? We did our homework in an effort to make the task a little easier for you by compiling the answers (from the schools themselves) to basic FAQs like tuition, teacher-student ratios and religious affiliation on more than 200 schools in the area. So you can use this information to compare schools based on what’s important to you — and your children. This list is by no means exhaustive. (There are schools that didn’t respond to repeated calls and emails.) And information is subject to change, but we’re hoping you can use this as a starting point whether you’re starting to think about preschool, elementary school or high school, or simply looking for a change (lots of schools begin the admission process in the fall for the following school year). Regardless, after narrowing the field, schedule a tour at a handful of campuses to get a feel for each of the programs and find the best education for your kids. COLLIN COUNTY

chad c. perry, dds FA M I LY D E N T I S T RY Working with families, especially children, is a significant part of Chad Perry’s practice and office culture. Since he opened for business 12 years ago, he has had the pleasure of watching families evolve and kids grow. Experiencing life events with his patients means the world to him and being a part of so many lives is what makes him passionate about the care and quality of dentistry he delivers. Maintaining and promoting a relaxed dental atmosphere with an emphasis on providing families with the most pleasant dental experience possible is a priority to Chad and his staff.Â

Born and raised right here in the Fort Worth area, Chad is a dedicated husband and father. His 6-year-old daughter, pictured left, is his greatest joy. He and his wife both graduated from Nolan High School and TCU, and then Dr. Perry went on to earn his dental degree from Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas. Growing up in and being a part of this community makes it easy for Chad and his office to provide high quality dentistry with a hospitable service that is unlike any other office in the area. Most of his patients are referred by existing patients and from trusted specialists in the area, the highest compliment a dentist can receive! His mission is to give his patients the best dental visit of their lives!Â

PUBLIC

THE PRIVATE SCHOOL LIST

THE

Districts by the numbers

T

he public school system is a lot more complicated than it used to be, and the lines between private and public are less clear. From magnet schools and special education programs to campuses offering pre-K, there are a range of options and perks within the public school system. Some districts have intermediate schools and middle schools and some have sixth grade or ninth grade centers to help kids transition to middle and high school. (We’ve lumped these centers in with middle schools and high schools in the tally below.) If public school is the right choice for your family, enroll kiddos who turn 5 on or before September 1, 2017 in the school near you, or check with your district — some offer open enrollment, meaning your child can attend a school across town.
