Publisher’s Column by Barry Plaxen For our June issue, the cover’s digital image of Elaine Giguere (see page 12) should have been credited to the design team of Hans Küng, Brandi Merolla, and Bruce Bidwell. Thanks again, Elaine, for your 42 years of dedication and energy in making the Upper Delaware a vibrant arts destination, and for administering the NY State Council on the Arts Decentralization Grants to the fabulous creative community in Sullivan County. We’ve got Ikebana, beatboxing, witches, neo-burlesque, events for kids, free concerts, free museum days, free Shakespeare, tenminute plays, and a Memorial Service for the great Chris Farlekas. Read on! TWO HAPPY ANNIVERSARIES: CANVAS - 13 years! NACL THEATRE - 20 years!

CANVAS looks terrific. My husband said, “Just look at this, it has everything that is going on for the month, EVERYTHING.” And then he said, “And there is someone you used to work with in there.” So he had me guess for a while, and then showed me. It was Jeffrey Stocker. You did a piece on him and a play-reading he is directing at Grey Towers. I worked with him a lot

Letters to the Editor I wanted to acknowledge and thank you for the important impact and effect that your publication, CANVAS, has had for both artists and art lovers in our region. You make a significant contribution to disseminating valuable information about our vibrant artistic communities that otherwise might go unnoticed. The arts are so important in our culture and your hard work to produce, publish and distribute each issue in a timely manner and make CANVAS readily and conveniently available in so many locations, free of charge, is very much appreciated. - Paul Gould, Hudson Valley Gallery

In July 2004, when I first met Tannis, Brad and the NACL thespians, they were in the middle of the field at the Gorzynski Farm in Cochecton Center. I got a flat tire on the way home from the Delaware Valley Opera, and I stopped to ask for a phone so I could call AAA. (I don’t remember if they were out in the field helping to plant or to harvest for Tannis’ future husband Greg who ran the farm, or preparing an NACL-style site-specific play.) They fixed my tire, and when Tannis found out who I was she told me who they were and that she had been phoning my office earlier that day to ask for more copies of our first issue of CANVAS for their theatre. So I reached into the trunk and gave her the extra copies. How’s that for “there are no accidents!”

“The Art of War” in Shohola It’s often said that both countries in a war think God is on their side. It’s equally true that both parties have art on their side. Depending on your point of view, artistic creations have helped make the world safe for democracy, or been used to dehumanize “the enemy” to make it easier for soldiers to kill them. The Barryville Area Arts Association is sponsoring an exhibit titled, The Art of War, that includes art from both sides of the World Wars. Special sections are devoted to the use of children in war propaganda, and the use - by both sides - of racial and ethnic stereotypes. Several original WWII posters on loan from the Pike County Historical Society will be on display, including Norman Rockwell’s famous Freedom From Want poster. The exhibit includes obvious choices like Rosie the Riveter and Uncle Same Wants You. But there is lots of lesser known art that has disappeared because it makes many of us

People will disagree on which works of art cross the line, but whatever your politics, you’ll be amazed to see what a big part art has played in the history of war.” The opening reception on July 1, from 4:00pm6:00pm, will include a brief presentationandagroupexhibit of local artists including Eloy Argueso, Isabelle Bajda, Jane Brennan, Richard D’Ambrosia, Mef Gannon, Debbie Gioello, Adrienne Markowitz, Stephanie McClure, Susan Miiller, Dixie Rich, Kelly Ryan, and Joan Standora. Meet DVAA’s Ariel Shanberg

The board of directors of the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance (DVAA) is pleased to announce that Ariel Shanberg joined the organization as Executive Director in June 2017. Shanberg succeeds Elaine Giguere who co-founded and oversaw the non-profit arts organization for 42 years. “The Board of Directors is excited and thrilled with Ariel’s selection as our Executive Director,” says DVAA Board President Jeffrey Allison. “He is experienced in managing arts organizations, but even more importantly, he has a passion for the arts and how the arts build community. We look forward to introducing Ariel to everyone.” From 2003-2015, Shanberg was the Executive Director at the Center for Photography (CPW) at Woodstock. Under his leadership, CPW received numerous accolades including the 2009 Spotlight Award from the Lucie Foundation for significantly altering the landscape of photography, and the 2014 Ulster County Executive Arts Award for Arts Organization of the Year. In 2014, CPW’s residency program was listed as one of the top twenty programs in the United States. “I couldn’t be more thrilled to be joining the staff and board of DVAA at this exciting juncture. Elaine’s remarkable vision and leadership of DVAA has truly transformed the cultural landscape of Sullivan County and I am looking forward to building on such

a proud legacy,” says Shanberg. “With the rising popularity of our region and the vital role the arts play both in Sullivan County’s economy and the quality of life it provides, DVAA, through its role as the Arts Council of Sullivan County and its rich range of programming including its galleries, offerings at the Tusten Theatre, Riverfest and the Big Eddy Film Festival, is uniquely poised to strengthen the vast network of creative voices that are making this area their home, and connect them with new and enthusiastic audiences.” “Ariel’s experience with community development and running an arts organization, along with his personal commitment to artmaking, makes him uniquely qualified to take the reins,” says Giguere, who will retire at the end of June. “I feel confident that DVAA will be in good hands with Ariel at the helm.”

Ambitious Barn Exhibit at Liberty Museum

In one of its most ambitious exhibits in its 20-year history, the Liberty Museum & Arts Center (LMAC) is presenting Barns of the Catskills 2017, a multi-media presentation of the beauty and importance of barns in the Catskill Mountains. Barns and farming have always been an integral part of the Catskills and the LMAC is endeavoring to document and preserve this heritage. The Museum is seeking to document the agricultural presence in the Catskills, our immigrant ancestors’ attempts to farm in a difficult environment and the barns that provided the necessary shelter and storage and to further document the rebirth of farming in our mountains. Curated by designer and LMAC founding board member Sharon Green, the exhibit features a breathtaking variety of barn photographs, both historical and current, paintings of and inspired by the region’s barns and the collected stories of the contributors to the exhibit, floor plans and architectural renderings, and artifacts culled from the diverse array of barns in our region. While many barns have been converted into living spaces and business venues, the rebirth of farming in the Catskills has given a new lease on life for hundreds of barns which had sat empty and neglected for years. “When I first put out the call for exhibitors, I had no idea what to expect,” says Green. “The response was amazingly diverse with people

from all around the region generously sharing their family photos and stories with us.” The exhibit includes the photography of Rich Klein, Marcy Bernstein of Roost Studios in New Paltz and the 50 photograph project of Laverne Black documenting the barns of the Catskills, on loan from the Time and the Valleys Museum in Grahamsville. There are watercolors by Lee Parks and Caroline Harrow and an array of barn artifacts and historical photographs contributed by the barn owners themselves and much more. In conjunction with LMAC’s 20th anniversary, the exhibit will run through July 29. A reception with many of the contributors to the exhibit will be held on July 2, from 5:30pm-8:30pm with food and refreshments and Americana music by the popular band Little Sparrow. LMAC is located at 46 South Main Street, Liberty. For information: 845-292-2394.

GNSO’s Free “Toe-Tapping” Concert The Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra (GNSO), enjoying its most successful season to date, will perform its annual free summer concert on July 29, 4:00pm at Mount Saint Mary College’s Aquinas Hall. The Lord of the Dance program has “something for everyone,” according to Music Director Russell Ger, and “will leave the audience tapping their toes.” “Dance has always been one of the primary functions of music,” Ger explained. “In ancient days, tribal dances were used for all kinds of important rituals and ceremonies; in the courts of Europe, formal dancing was a required protocol in aristocratic interactions; and in much of Latin America, dance was the way that genders socialized together.” “This program,” Mr. Ger continued, “is a celebration of many different kinds of dance music. From the irresistibly jazzy rhythms of Bernstein and Shostakovich, to Dvořák’s Bohemian ebullience, to Ravel’s hypnotic Bolero, to Johann Strauss’ playful and rambunctious polkas.” Shostakovich’s Suite for Variety Orchestra No. 1 is a suite in eight movements. The work consists of a collection of movements which derive from other works by the composer. Leonard Bernstein’s 1944 Broadway

musical On the Town is really an expanded version of Bernstein and Jerome Robbins’ ballet, Fancy Free, though the music is completely different. Today On the Town is remembered as the source of the tune New York, New York. When Bernstein extracted the Three Dance Episodes from the score some months later, he dutifully made sure that famous tune figured prominently into one of the episodes. Concluding his first year at the helm of the GNSO, Ger has become well-known for ebullience himself through his informed and witty commentary from the podium at each program. Since September 2016, audiences for the orchestra’s performances have virtually doubled, and this response enabled the GNSO to add an extra concert in March. Lord of the Dance will be presented at the airconditioned Aquinas Hall, 330 Powell Avenue, Newburgh. There is no charge for admission, however donations are encouraged.

A Party to Celebrate 20 Years - and Neo-Burlesque!

FUN FOR THE FAMILY! Everyone’s invited to Highland Lake for a mid-summer night party celebrating two decades of dedication to artistic exploration and cultivation of community by the North American Cultural Laboratory (NACL). A professional, non-profit theatre arts company, NACL has developed 20 original ensemble theatre productions and countless public spectacles. In 1997 NACL was born in a small rented studio in Toronto, the love child of Winnipeg actress Tannis Kowalchuk and American director Brad Krumholz. Twenty years on, the company continues to thrive, presenting and producing innovative new works of theatre art in Highland Lake, New York City and beyond. The company creates and tours devised theatre performances, collaborates with an international circle of artists, and presents a performance season featuring work by local and visiting artists. Committed to supporting theatre training at all stages in an artist’s development, NACL offers artist residencies, professional development retreats, master

classes, workshops, and early education drama classes. On July 8 doors will open at 7:30pm. The evening includes live music, food, video flashes of the past, and visions of the future, celebrating 20 years of exploration and discovery! ADULTS ONLY! The Slipper Room is the brainchild of performer and producer James Habacker. When it opened in 1999, neo-burlesque was in its infancy. Before that time there had been some random shows in lofts and bars around the city, but the Slipper Room was the first venue built specifically to showcase the work of this burgeoning new collective. It was an art project in itself, an artist run venue designed to nurture emerging talent, and push performers to reach their true potential. The early shows were mostly comprised of performance artists, drag queens, experimental dancers, sideshow acts, and anyone who showed up with an idea, no matter how outrageous, messy, lewd, or illegal. Very often in the early days there were not enough performers to make up a full show, and James, master of ceremonies, would ply his friends with drinks, dress them up in outrageous costumes and quickly concoct a plot before pushing them out on stage. It wasn’t long before word got

around about this new artist collective, and enough young talent presented themselves at the Slipper Room to make it possible to put up high quality shows every night. James allowed performers a forum to push themselves and try out new work without fear of censorship. He also added comic relief with his wide variety of characters, his satirical wit, and his love of Vaudeville. Whether it’s salacious Mel Frye or loquacious Walt Whitman, The Slipper Room emcee is sure to ensnare you in his web of intrigue and indiscretion, leading the talented and tawdry band of nouveaux vaudevillians - burlesque dancers, acrobats, comedians, magicians - in a variety show that each year raises the temperature of Highland Lake to the hottest on record! July 22 at 8:30pm. NACL is located at 110 Highland Lake Road, Highland Lake. Visit www.nacl.org or phone 845-557-0694 for tickets.

Sugar Loaf Witches!

SP Projects and the Seligmann Center for the Arts are presenting Season of the Witch, a group exhibition of new work exploring ritual, magick, and modern-day mysticism, curated “Kybel” by Evie Falci by Sarah Potter of SP Projects. The exhibit reflects on the ways artists engage in ritual to reveal their personal beliefs and spirituality through the creation of their artwork. The potent archetype of “the witch” is utilized here to represent a creator whose power comes from within. Like modern day shamans, artists are the ultimate magicians, able to turn the intangible into the tangible; the immaterial magically materializes. Working intuitively while referencing the powerful language of symbols, all of the artists in this exhibition turn art-making into a modern day magical practice. The Season of the Witch reception takes place on July 22, from 6:00pm-9:00pm. The show runs through September 4. The Seligmann Center is located at 23 White Oak Drive, Sugar Loaf. FREE SUMMER CONCERT SERIES Port Jervis: Monday Nights in the Park

the concerts will be held at DUMC, Sussex St. Sugar Loaf: On The Lawn

The Broome Street Band Wind Ensemble

The Broome Street Bands are an all volunteer group of musicians. Hosted by the Drew United Methodist Church (DUMC) in Port Jervis, the beginnings of the Broome Street Bands trace back many years to a small group of musicians who wanted to play live music for the DUMC services. That first group were called the Swinging Stewards and the founding members included Hank Ranich and Albert Gessner (of Al’s Music Shop in Port Jervis). Today, they march in parades and have now expanded to include a variety of four other musical ensembles. All ages are represented in their groups - from baton twirling children to retired seniors along with music teachers, professional musicians, amateurs and hobbyists. Port Jervis’ new free summer concert series, Monday Nights in the Park is held in Farnum Park, 21 Ulster Place. The Broome Street Band Wind Ensemble performs on July 10 & 24 at 7:00pm. In the event of bad weather

Side By Side Family Band performs at “On the Lawn” on July 6, 6:30pm.

On the Lawn, free weekly concerts in July and August, boasts “a place for everyone”, says co-producer Richard Logothetis of Lycian Stage Lighting in Sugar Loaf. The concerts are held every Thursday at 6:30pm, and offers different “sections” with different amplification. “We have the main seating area in front of the bands set for clear audio reproduction of the music, and locations for easy listening, an “overflow section” with lower level volume and with smaller speakers equalizing for a more mellow sound,” explained Logothetis. “Some people want to sit and chat, eat a little food and listen to the music as background for their picnic. The easy listening section addresses that, while the real band-lovers sit up front. A third area under the tent has somewhat similar sound as in the front with lower volume.” They have also installed a system for the hearing

impaired. Just ask at the ice cream counter! Cars with proper tags for folks with disabilities can park in the parking lot directly across from the entrance. Parking is allowed along Kings Highway, Wood Road, and up the bypass (CR13). “We have also installed a larger tent for more people to fit under in case of rain,” writes coproducer Susan Logothetis. Susan reminds us that, “we have a knitting tent, a tent with lights so the needleworkers don’t have to stop stitching when the sun goes down.” Now THAT’S user-friendly! Bring a chair, blanket, and picnic (and needlework - maybe Sudoku?) to On The Lawn, Sugar Loaf Crossing, 1405 Kings Highway, Sugar Loaf. See ad page 28 for the July roster. Meet Puck and Bottom: Fairies Dancing in Salesian Perhaps one of the most popular of all the Shakespearian plays is A Midsummer Night’s Dream. As comedy, it sits and pivots on the universal themes of love and its all too numerous complications. And now, with the long awaited summer in full view, what could be a more appropriate selection for the Cornerstone Theatre Arts’ 8th annual Shakespeare in the Park than the Bard’s most widely known and well-liked comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. And in the park it will be! The secretive and mysterious Salesian Park, in the center of Goshen, has its own atmosphere and connection with nature. And in that spirit, it is the appropriate location for what has become a highly anticipated event in the Cornerstone Theatre Arts’ repertoire. This most lovable of all Shakespearean theatre is not only popular with the general public, but reportedly the members of the Cornerstone Theatre have collaborated, or maybe conspired, to insure its selection as

the play for the park. If one is even briefly familiar with the play, it is widely recognized as art that is open to wide and varied interpretations, some deep and mysterious and others easily Brittany Pierce apparent, and lots of fun. Naturally and quite thankfully, thespians are inclined to be a creative and fun loving lot and when the opportunity to play with roles, mistaken identities and personal ambiguities presents itself, the juices of inspiration and imagination began to flow. And so it is with cast and crew at Cornerstone Theatre Arts as this endeavor takes shape. This Midsummer Night promises to be not just a representation of an Elizabethan poet, but in practice, it will reflect the creative and varied imaginations of the Cornerstone Theatre artists in union as they join with the poet. The cast for this Shakespearean adventure is rumored to be one of Cornerstone’s strongest. Strongest in the sense that this group

of players in Goshen has been growing and expanding over a number of years, and now they are as ready as ever to explore the varied and more creative aspects of theatre. Co-director Jim Haines and adapter Brittany Pierce commented recently, “This year we are paying homage to the great Walt Disney in his love of all things magical and childlike. Midsummer fits the bill in that there is magic, fairies, true love, wooing, conflict, and, of course, a happy ending. We plan to use classic Disney songs and some other surprises to make this a family-friendly, easily accessible version of Midsummer.” The play as a whole will pay tribute to Disney and especially his music. This is a production of many colluding minds and calloused hands. In that list of characters there is always a favorite or two. For this writer, Puck has always been at the top of the list. As a

mischievous spirit, Puck is described as a “shrewd and knavish sprite” and “that merry wanderer of the night.” This role of Puck will be brought to life by veteran Orange County actor, Brittany Pierce, who, as mentioned, will also be co-directing this production with Cornerstone’s Artistic Director, Ken Tschan. There is also, of course, Bottom. It is Puck and Bottom who make things happen in this play and as such are two to watch carefully. But Bottom as a pivotal character will be played by Jim Haines, who interestingly will be making his stage debut with the Cornerstone Theatre Arts in this in-the-park production. As July settles into Orange County, the moist and warm air of a midsummer’s day will find the seclusion offered by evening in Goshen’s enchanted Salesian Park. There is a place to enjoy the brilliance of Shakespeare and the talents of the Cornerstone Theatre Arts! A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be presented on July 15 & 22, at 7:00pm with Sunday Matinees on July 16 & 23, 2:00pm. Bring a lawn chair and picnic! No reservations needed.

Inhabiting Two Musical Worlds: Jesse Jones, Resident Composer, WCM 2017 Edition by Philip Ehrensaft If not for an arm broken during an arm wrestling match when Jesse Jones was in his late teens, we would be hearing him on stage as a concert pianist rather than being one of the rising stars among living American composers. Jones is the resident composer at the 2017 edition of the Catskill’s two-week long Weekend of Chamber Music, (WCM), running from July 15 to July 30. A word of warning to readers: Jones is now a professor of composition at Oberlin, my alma mater, so I bring an innate favorable inclination towards an Oberlin prof. Oberlin and, more recently, the Hudson Valley’s Bard College are unique among American liberal arts colleges; their highly-ranked colleges are twinned with nationally renowned classical music conservatories. You have to be damned good to land a teaching gig at Oberlin. Jones’ compositions are indeed, damned good. Born in 1978, Jones grew up in rural New Mexico. He was home schooled by his mother to become a concert pianist. The arm wrestling came via his blue-collar construction entrepreneur dad. As Jones’ arm was healing as best it could, he took up the mandolin as an instrument he could handle. The family moved to Oregon when Jones approached college age. He performed progressive Bluegrass as a mandolinist and vocalist while earning B.A.

and M.A. degrees in classical composition. Jones’ outstanding bluegrass mandolin playing landed Jones on NPR’s Prairie Home Companion. If you want to hear just how good Jones is on the mandolin, check out YouTube for his stunning solo performance of Georgia On My Mind. With that parallel Bluegrass career, one would expect a good dollop of today’s common crossovers between classical music and other genres in Jones’ compositions. That is not the case, even when the mandolin is involved. Jones mostly moves in two parallel musical worlds: “I don’t think there is much stylistic bleedthrough between my bluegrass music-making and my ‘classical’ composition, but playing the mandolin has given me a good understanding of string instruments. And, beyond that, there is something of the vocal quality of a bluegrass singer that I often try to mimic in

my compositions - certain inflections, a gritty vocal quality that might help inform any melody I write.” After completing his M.A. at the University of Oregon, Jones headed to Cornell University’s rigorous doctoral program in composition. Jones became intrigued by the microtonality that is present in many threads of nonwestern art music and folk music. Microtonality means building musical scales along shorter intervals and different organizational principles than the twelve equally spaced tones of Western music. Microtonality entered into works by composers like Charles Ives, Bela Bartok, Gyorgi Ligeti, James Tenney, Terry Riley, John Adams, and especially the late Joe Maneri, who both taught microtonal classical composition at the New England Conservatory of Music and performed microtonal jazz as an outstanding saxophonist. Jones’ doctoral thesis on microtonality became a book, Microtonalis, which is an important reference on composing this kind of music. When Jones was doctored up in 2012, he was awarded the very prestigious Elliot Carter Prize from the American Academy in Rome. That was followed two years later by a Guggenheim Fellowship. His third string quartet was commissioned by the Juilliard String Quartet and performed multiple times on both sides of the Atlantic. That’s a very short list of the awards that have come Jones’

way. One reason for the recognition that comes Jones’ way, I think, is the breadth of his output: orchestral music, chamber music, opera, choral music, solo vocal music, electronic music, film music, and music composed in tandem with visual art. What will Jones’ music sound like when you catch one of his compositions at a WCM concert? Here’s the LA Times music critic Mark Swed’s take on a Juilliard String quartet performance of Jones’ Whereof Man Cannot Speak: “Jones works in eerie microtones, producing glassy surfaces like a mystically still sonic pond onto which he throws pebbles and generates ripples. He employs sliding tones, fluttering effects, modal melodies and, at one point, the Dies Irae theme in pizzicato. One hears bits of Ben Johnston’s microtonal string quartets and hints of Eastern European holy Minimalism. It’s an engaging, well-written piece, grit-free.” Meet Jones at the Catskill Distilling Company in Bethel on July 20 at 7:30pm for WCM’s An Evening with Jesse Jones: Conversation, Music and More! Hear Jones’ music along with Scriabin, Domenico Gallo (1730-1768), Stravinsky, Messiaen, Waggoner, Beethoven and Bach from July 15-30 in Jeffersonville, Callicoon, Honesdale, Livingston Manor and Liberty. From Brandeis to Broadway to Narrowsburg

Leonard Bernstein was on his honeymoon in 1951 when he began composing his one-act opera, Trouble in Tahiti, a candid portrait of the troubled marriage of a young suburban couple. Written between his Broadway masterpieces On The Town and Candide, the opera draws upon popular songs styles to deliver an uncompromising critique of post-war American materialism. Beneath the couple’s marital discord is a profound longing for love and intimacy. Their spiritual emptiness, in contrast to a veneer of happy consumerism, creates the heart of the drama and is emphasized by sudden stylistic shifts in the music. The opera was given its initial performance at the first annual Festival of Creative Arts at Brandeis University. It was an auspicious occasion, only slightly marred by the fact that the procession of speakers who preceded it delayed the curtain until 11:00pm! There was even some pretty stiff competition two nights later when Marc Blitzstein’s soon-tobe-famous adaptation of Kurt Weill’s The Threepenny Opera was also first unveiled. Shortly before that world premiere on June 12, 1952, Bernstein said, “It’s a lightweight piece. The whole thing is popular-song inspired and the roots are in musical comedy,

or better still, American musical theatre.” But what becomes immediately apparent upon listening to the opera today is that our ever increasing concern with the domestic life and culture of suburbanites has given this deft picture of that group an even greater significance than the composer could have then realized. After some re-writing and then a performance at Tanglewood in November 1952, Trouble in Tahiti was offered as part of the then famous and highly respected NBC Opera TV season. (They performed all their operas in English). The great mezzo soprano/ actress Beverly Woolf and baritone David Atkinson starred. Then, in 1955, the opera ran on Broadway as part of a triple bill. The Delaware Valley Opera performs the one-act opera following The American Songbook, which is the first half of the program, on July 28-29-30 in the Tusten Theatre, 210 Bridge Street, Narrowsburg. The opera features Jenny Gac and Matthew Samluk (see photos), with Meredith Huveneer, Tshombe Selby and Amit Khaneja as “The Jazz Trio”, serving as a combination Greek Chorus and Narrator. Sundwall Gives Lessons in Pine Bush by Sal Aiello On a Sunday afternoon, not long ago, I was part of the audience during a Middletown Art Group meeting where artist Joseph Sundwall was going to demonstrate. Along with 30 other artists I watched Joe create a portrait in a little over 90 minutes using just six oil colors. What I saw convinced me this was a man who not only knows painting, but also can eloquently share his knowledge with accompanying commentary. I came away from that Sunday meeting extremely impressed. Joe began his career in art long ago as a third grader in Chicago with a successful first oil painting. Then recognizing his talent and under the influence of his parents and tutelage of his teachers of the time, he steadily moved forward. He studied in Kansas City to become a graphic designer and then moved onto NYC to develop into a fine artist producing wonderful canvases of landscapes, still-life, birds, nudes and, of course, portraits. Throughout his extensive career Joe was curious about “watching how the work gets done”. Technique, along with his talent and perceptive eye formed his unique style of painting. Research into the materials he uses to

get the best possible results was another method of making his final work look brilliant. When looking at Joe’s work, his brush strokes and use of color show his economy of thought and how he is “interested in putting down on the canvas no more than is necessary to get the point across.” This is something most artists strive for and miss the mark. Joe has accomplished this in his work whether it is a bird, a basket with kittens, a reclining nude or portrait. Now living in Montgomery, Joe can be seen teaching classes at the Wallkill River School or trooping around the area painting in plein air, and, of course, demonstrating his painting technique. It is with great excitement that the Board of Directors of the Crawford Arts Association (CAA) announce that Joseph Sundwall, renown portrait artist and art demonstrator, is coming to Pine Bush on July 13, at 1:30pm to demonstrate his technique to the CAA membership, friends of CAA, students and other interested persons. Sundwall’s demo will take place on the second floor of the Town of Crawford Government Center, Route 302. There is no charge for this demonstration and refreshments will be served.

The Art of Japanese Flower Arranging Ikebana has a venerable history spanning more than 550 years in Japan with practitioners worldwide. Much of this history encompasses the development of traditional styles of ikebana: rikka and shoka. The art form has not remained static, with modernized versions appearing in the 20th century and the development of completely new styles in the 20th and 21st centuries. A modern style, freestyle or “jiyuka”, is a way for the arranger to express his/herself with few of the constraints that characterize traditional arranging. Members of the NY Tachibana chapter of the Ikenobo Ikebana Society of America will display their ikebana creations on July 22 in the Rhinebeck Room at Glen Arden, 214 Harriman Drive, Goshen from Noon-4:00pm. Chapter members will be on hand to answer questions and talk about their arrangements and the art of ikebana. This exhibition honors the founder of NY Tachibana, Toshiko Shindo Alden, who passed away earlier this year. Her 100th birthday would have been this July. Mrs. Alden was an accomplished flower arranger and instructor, teaching classes in the region and throughout the northeast for decades and sharing her love of flowers and ikebana with hundreds of students. Pamela Mather-Cathy and Michael Piotrowski were long time Ikebana students of Mrs. Alden. A respected Master Teacher

Toshiko Shindo Alden

to both Pamela and Michael, they decided to honor her passing and their time together with an exhibition of their art in other media at Glen Arden: Pamela’s work in photography, acrylics and finger paints and Michael’s in oils, wood block prints and monoprints, July 17-28. See ad on page 29 for more information. The private lessons with Mrs. Alden included a demo of a traditional flower arrangement style, an opportunity to use similar materials to create an arrangement, then constructive comments and correction. Once in a while, there was a silence, as she looked and looked, and then spoke one of her highest praises, “Nicely done.” Pam & Michael’s comment to Toshiko Shindo Alden, on her many decades of dedicated service to the Art of Ikenobo Ikebana, its traditions and her many students: “Nicely done.”

“American History through Folk Songs” Originally from Rockland County, Eric Lipper started out on a toy piano that he got for his 2nd birthday. After fronting his own original rock bands in high school and at SUNY Purchase, Eric took an opportunity to play keyboards with the oldies group The Platters. This led to performances at such high profile shows as The Drifters, The Chiffons, Lou Christie, Bobby Lewis and others. He has been involved in many types of music roles: singer, guitarist, arranger, producer, composer. His eclectic nature and skill on a multitude of instruments has led to him writing arrangements for flute, violin, cello and trumpet. Inspired by the ghostly 1920’s recordings of

The Carter Family, Eric started the folk group, The Tweedlers. Their album Old’ Timin’ was released in 2007. The group spent 5 summers entertaining at county fairs all around the northeast to fans who refer to themselves as “Tweedlerheads.” It is primarily from this repertoire that he has designed a show that he will bring to the Greenwood Lake Public Library on July 13 at 7:00pm. Lipper will perform a selection of dark and funny colorful tales entitled, American History through Folk Songs at the Library, 79 Waterstone Road, Greenwood Lake. Registration in person at the Library or by phone is required: 845-477-8377, ext. 104.

10 Minute Plays in Port Jervis “In 1923, Pierre Loving published an anthology of ten minute plays which included offerings by such notable playwrights as Arthur Schnitzler, Ferenc Molnar and August Strindberg. However, the more generally accepted “official” debut of the form as a genre dates to the Actor’s Theater of Louisville’s Humana Festival of New American Plays, which premiered in 1977. The new format, then dubbed “Polaroid playwriting,” which was part of the festival, quickly evolved into a dynamic form that offered thrilling possibilities. “Now a proven form of theater, these short plays are highly popular with audiences the world over. Several of the most prominent contemporary playwrights including David Mamet, Christopher Durang, Craig Lucas, Tony Kushner, David Ives, August Wilson, and many others have successfully presented offerings in this genre. “It seems that rather than constrain and impose limitations, the form offers writers the opportunity to tell their stories quickly in a more focused and dynamic manner. A good number of actors enjoy and excel at the demands of playing a variety of roles in quick succession. And audiences who are fans of these plays relish the broad spectrum of 24

theater available to them at one sitting.” - Theatredatabase.com A popular anthology of 10-minute plays describes the genre this way: “A ten-minute play is a streak of theatrical lightning. It doesn’t last long, but its power can stand your hair on end.” The Orange County Arts Council will give audiences the opportunity to see for themselves, when it presents the inaugural Ten Minute Play Festival on July 14 in The Loft at Foundry 42, 42 Front Street, Port Jervis. Beginning at 7:00pm, eight one-act plays of approximately ten minutes in length by Orange County writers will receive a scriptin-hand reading by area actors. Many of these plays will be read aloud for the first time publicly. Following the readings, there will be an informal meet and greet, when the audience will be afforded the opportunity to ask questions of the playwrights, directors and actors. The Orange County Arts Council works daily to integrate the arts into the many aspects of Orange County life, support the County’s many creative resources, and enrich the quality of life for all Orange County residents. The photo was snapped at the Concord in 1952. Hugh and Paul and a stage full of Jazz musicians backing up Sammy Davis, Jr. I later learned that Hugh had toured with Wyands, playing with the great saxophonist, Illinois Jaquet. Hugh assembled his horn for the second set. Paul invited him up. Hugh sat down and some kind of magic fell over the room. The musicians’ attention seemed pulled in, focused on each other. This was a reunion. “Watcha got, Hugh?” asked Paul. And the melody - almost delicate - of Brodie’s sax wove together with that sound we’ve come to rely on at Albert’s Liberty House - Jazz surely as profound as any played at Birdland, or the Vanguard, or uptown at Ryan’s where Locke played drums for the great trumpet player, Roy Eldridge. Nardini, Vivaldi & More at Pacem “SPECIAL! Our co-musical directors playing together. Always a remarkable event!,” announced Lukas Franck of Warwick’s unique concert hall, Pacem In Terris. Franck is referring to violinst Krista Bennion-Feeney and harpsichordist Gregory Hayes. Hayes plays regularly for the Albany Symphony Orchestra, and has also performed with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s. BennionFeeney is a concertmaster of Orchestra of St. Luke’s, a member of St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble since 1983, and a frequent soloist with both ensembles. John Feeney is principal double bass of the Orchestra of St. Luke’s. As a violinist, Pietro Nardini (1722-1793) was praised by Leopold Mozart for the unsurpassed “beauty, purity and equality of his tone,” and by contemporary poet/ musician Schobart for moving even “icecold aristocrats” to tears. For Krista, Pietro Nardini’s e minor Violin Concerto embodies the essence of the bel canto “beautiful singing” style. Simpler accompaniments put the focus on the soloist, allowing the violin to sing a story to the audience. Nardini’s writing is not triumphant, not about heroics. It’s all about heart. This doesn’t mean his rarely performed Violin Concerto in e minor is easy to play. “On the contrary,” says Krista. “It requires a great

deal of nuance and shading. You play with your heart on your sleeve while keeping in mind it’s primarily an 18th century piece. With Nardini, you just hover at this delicious place without crossing into sentimentality.” Nardini wrote it in 1760 as a sonata, then later on in the 19th century the piece was orchestrated by a couple of other composers. It is now solely performed as a concerto as the original sonata version is lost. Krista Bennion Feeney, joined by Gregory Hayes and John Feeney, will return full circle to Nardini’s original conception of the piece, performing it at Pacem in Terris as a sonata on July 23 at 5:00pm. In addition, Krista will be playing a Vivaldi Sonata and Gregory will hopefully perform a Baroque harpsichord solo. Pacem in Terris is located at 96 Covered Bridge Road, Warwick. Tickets go on sale at 4:00pm. Visit the Frederick Franck sculpture garden and museum. Bring a seat cushion. For information: 845-986-4329.

Wellness Modalities: Massage Therapy Massage therapy history dates back thousands of years to ancient cultures that believed in its medical benefits. The first written records of massage therapy are found in China and Egypt, 2700 BCE. The first known Chinese text is titled, The Yellow Emperor’s Classic Book of Internal Medicine. Massage therapy began as a sacred system of natural healing. However, cultural shifts rendered it a disreputable form of indulgence for extensive periods of history. Enduring these turns, massage therapy has experienced resurgence in modern times. Today, massage therapy stands as a highly respected holistic healing method practiced across the world. “Therapeutic massage is a general term that describes any type of massage modality that helps relieve pain, reduce stress, and work on a specific problem - such as a frozen shoulder. “People tend to assume therapeutic massage means deep tissue massage, and that they will get a very strong massage. But this is not always the case. Deep tissue massage is great at breaking down scar tissue and getting your blood circulating, but it may not be what you need on a particular day. A good therapist will apply the specific techniques and the right amount of pressure to address your needs, and sometimes that’s a lighter touch.

“Deep tissue massage it is a great way to manage pain. Deep tissue massage - as well as the other therapeutic massage methods - can give you a lot of relief from chronic pain. “A deep tissue massage will leave you dehydrated. That’s why your therapist gives you water when it’s over. It is very important to drink plenty of water after a therapeutic massage.” www.rejuvenationsmassagetherapy.com Going back to using energy modalities rather than deep tissue massage, Rock Tavern massage therapist Debra Sheafe states, “Massage is so nurturing and healing and so important because we are tactile, even with energy work...all the different modalities, massage is a gateway to receptivity, allowing the body to feel nurtured and receptive to vibrational cellular healing.” See ad pg. 21.
