FROM THE PUBLISHER by Barry Plaxen Errata: Our sincerest apologies to Bethel Woods Center for the Performing Arts. We had an incorrect listing in the calendar for the Harvest Festival and editorial noted erroneously that the Creativity Learning tent was a Harvest Festival event, instead of a separate happening. Synchronicity of the Month: x-acto knife created artworks in Montgomery & Wurtsboro. Vocabulary Lesson: Scherenschnitte: “scissor cuts” in German, the art of paper cutting design. In this issue: Collaborations between two arts

organizations spanning the CANVAS map. South (Highland Lake & White Lake) to North (Hurleyville & Liberty), East (Hurleyville) to West (Bethel), and Southeast (Cornwall) to Northwest (Roscoe). And speaking of the CANVAS map: We welcome back Lackawaxen, Tuxedo and Walker Valley (and Roscoe) to our calendar entries. They’ve been missed. Art Walks in Goshen and Callicoon. A memorial concert for WJFF’s Cecily Fortescue in Ellenville. An honor ceremony in Rock Hill. Halloween (poetry) in Greenwood Lake and Chester, (festival) in Wurtsboro, and (ghost tours) in Highland Mills and Vails Gate.

TO THE EDITOR Hi, please note for next time. The theater name is spelled with -er not -re. I can’t really post the article now with the misspelling. - Mary McKinley Editor’s Note: Apologies to Greenwood Lake Theater (GWT) for our oversight in the September 2018 issue. We are so ingrained in using “theatre” for drama/ comedy/musicals, etc., as we do for Goshen, Monroe, Forestburgh, and Ellenville, and “theater” for cinema, that we did not notice GWT’s preference. We will be sure to honor GWT’s choice when we cover their future events. Thank you so much for all you have done for me and for WRS. You made me feel so special and important this month, and I appreciate it. I will always appreciate what you’ve done for me and our whole community. - Shawn Dell Joyce, Founder, Wallkill River School of Art

We ALL appreciate all that you and CANVAS do for the local arts community. I don’t think it would be as strong as it is without you! Anita Casamento, Happy Herbs Soaps

A black tie optional Gala opens the festival at the Hotel Fauchere with multi-awardwinning actress Jane Alexander as the Movie Icon guest, Jane Alexander along with special guest Lorna Luft. Following theater roles in The Inspector General and Look Back in Anger, Jane found critical success in 1967 as the mistress of boxer Jack Jefferson in The Great White Hope at the Arena Stage in Washington, DC, opposite James Earl Jones. She and Jones both won Tony and Drama Desk Awards for their performances when the play went to Broadway the following year. Both also earned Oscar nominations after making the transition to film. On October 19, after a screening of The Great White Hope, film historian John DiLeo will interview Alexander.

The film version would mark the first of four Oscar nominations for Jane. May I Have A Word With You ... Quips, Quotes & Quiddities with Carol Pozefsky ROBERT BENCHLEY (1889-1945) Popular American humor dripped with sarcasm long before SNL. Thanks to modern technology, writer/ commentator Robert Benchley’s wry wit is just a finger tap away and well worth the tapping. Reviewing a Broadway play he wrote: “It was one of those plays in which all of the actors unfortunately enunciated very clearly.” Benchley was a master of self deprecation: “Drawing on my fine command of the English language, I said nothing.” “It took me fifteen years to discover that I had no talent for writing, but I couldn’t give it up because, by that time, I was too famous.” Has anyone ever visited New York and not come away with unshakable conclusions? With raised eyebrow Benchley observed: “New York is the city where the people from Oshkosh look at the people from Dubuque in the next theater seats and say, “These New Yorkers don’t dress any better than we do.” HAVING SOME WORDS WITH YOU... We’ll be at the Big Apple Circus this month but the elephants won’t be. Last year

Governor Cuomo signed a bill into law prohibiting elephants in entertainment events including circuses and parades (Editor’s Note: FINALLY!!!!). The word elephant comes from the Greek ‘ele’ meaning ‘arch’ and the Latin ‘phant’ which means ‘huge’. The following lovely French words are from the world of dance. A grand jeté is a long horizontal jump, starting from one leg and landing on the other. It’s also known as a split in the Grand Jeté air. A cabriole is a quick step in which the socalled working leg is thrust into the air, while the underneath leg follows and beats against the first Cabriole leg sending it higher. Demi-pointe is the position in which a dancer’s body weight is supported on the balls of one or both feet with the heels raised off the floor. A danseur noble is a Demi-pointe male ballet dancer who specializes in classical roles, often the prince or other nobleman.

Palaia Ghost Tours, Highland Mills According to legend, the Palaia Winery estate was once home to Longhurst Covenant, a boarding school for orphaned children built by Mistress Theresa Longhurst in 1872. The home was built as a safe house for children who had experienced tragedy as a way to save them from their traumatic pasts. Mistress Theresa made it her mission to save gifted young women from the perils of their tragedies by providing them with a home and a worldclass education. In 1892, Longhurst Covenant burned to the ground. The origin of the fire that claimed the lives of Mistress Theresa and her six young wards is still unknown. Many believe that the fire may have been started by the newest addition to the home, Seraphina Harriden, who had arrived just weeks before the fire broke out. Supernatural historians speculate that there may have been something dangerous about Seraphina...something otherworldly.

Many guests have witnessed the spirits of Longhurst, Seraphina, and other school children wandering the grounds. Join tour guides and visit the property where Longhurst Covenant once stood for Seraphina: The Haunted Trail at Palaia Winery Fridays (October 5, 12, 19, & 26) from 6:30pm-9:30pm at Palaia Winery, 10 Sweet Clover Road, Highland Mills. “P.L.A.Y. The Classics” in Bethel The Shandelee Music Festival (SMF) concludes its triumphant 25th anniversary season with An Afternoon of Chamber Music presented in collaboration with Bethel Woods Center for the Arts (BW). The goal of this series is to encourage and foster young talented emerging artists, help to build and cultivate a younger audience, and increase attendance of all ages. P.L.A.Y. (Peace, Love, Art, You!) the Classics was instituted in 2016 as a partnership between the SMF and BW. The program provides not only an opportunity for classical music lovers to attend a concert during the spring and fall months, but also, according to BW CEO Darlene Fedun, “specific emphasis on reaching young adults in Sullivan County to introduce a love and appreciation of classical music to new audiences and youth.” Having appeared two years ago at the SMF’s Sunset Concert Series, the Aletheia Piano Trio will make a glorious return to Sullivan County for this P.L.A.Y. the Classics concert. The ensemble, named for Aletheia, the Greek concept of sincerity, which celebrates their approach to realizing musical works, as well as their connection with each other and their audiences, was formed in 2013 at the Juilliard School and has performed at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, and the

Meet Jackie Horner - Dance Instructor, “Dirty Dancing” Inspiration Kicking around the valley these days is an intriguing and often quoted appeal. “The Mountains are calling and I must go.” Attributed to John Muir, it’s a call destined to arouse memories in those of a particular generation, those who knew the not-so-secret tales of the Borscht Belt, a.k.a. The Jewish Alps, old Route 17, Sullivan County and the summer camps and hotels, those now faded gems that once speckled the area, Grossinger’s, Kutsher’s, the Concord, the Nevele, et al. For this writer, the attraction of that era falls first to a dear acquaintance. One, Jackie Horner, first encountered years ago at the popular Forestburgh Tavern’s Cabaret, where she’s remained a dedicated openingnight patron of the Playhouse. Her place in the history of Sullivan County soon became evident when members of the Forestburgh ResCo invited her to the floor for a short dance. And it was like, “Dance! Did someone say dance?” Wow, could she ever dance! Evident after that was her place as an iconic entertainer, a role solidified by her contribution to the making of the noted movie Dirty Dancing.

Penny, a central character in that film, is loosely based on real-life Jackie Horner and her recollections of that memorable time. It should be pointed out here, that contrary to the film’s portrayal of Penny, Jackie did not have an abortion. On October 21 at Bernie’s Holiday Restaurant in Rock Hill, the Sullivan County Historical Society will honor Horner as the recipient of the cherished History Preserver Award. Suzanne Cecil, President of the Society, notes emphatically that Ms. Horner, “...as an individual, has done significant work in preserving and interpreting Sullivan County History.” She was the wellnoted dance pro at Grossinger’s from 19541986 and aside from her time as a Rockette was a member of the June Taylor dance company. “She has been an inspiration in helping people remember the Catskills as it was.” And so, just how was the Catskills? Jackie was well-traveled and someone once commented that she literally danced her way across America. But she didn’t dance her way up a non-existing inter-state highway. The days of “To the Mountains by Rail” were history and

in the 50s, it was to the mountains via the internal combustion engine. Then, Route 17 was a narrow, well-worn highway, a treacherous byway with motor vehicle traffic that during those 50s virtually cut the City of Middletown in half on Friday nights and Sunday afternoons. A pass through Fair Oaks followed by a quaint little village known as Bloomingburg, currently in the process of becoming an American version of a 21st century shtetl. But before beginning a more serious ascent to the mountains, historic Route 17 passed by the O&W’s (Ontario and Western Railway) High View Station and the entrance to the historic High View Tunnel, sometime called the Shawangunk Tunnel. And there, where a rail trestle crossed 17 at the tunnel’s northern portal, was the frequently fatal hair-pin turn. Here, this notorious byway traversed the equally celebrated Shawangunk Ridge, a gateway to the Catskills. That fateful turn’s sole marker today is reduced to a simple, abandoned abutment. Only Wurtsboro remained in the path to the bastions of escape. Old Route 17 plotted its course directly through the middle of that

village, crossing the towpath and canal of the Delaware & Hudson Canal. The abrupt incline exiting the village once carried brakeless, runaway trucks into the village’s center, often at “break-neck” speeds! Beyond was the 50s version of what we’ll call the “relocation period,” that unique slice of Sullivan County history that Jackie Horner has refreshed in countless minds. It was a time when families discarded the congestion, heat and humidity of the City and fled for a week, a month, or the whole summer, to one of the numerous colonies, camps or big resorts, like Grossinger’s, Kutsher’s, the Concord, and the Nevele - they were “pioneers of the allinclusive vacation.” And though Jackie’s road has been long, and sometimes bumpy, her odometer knows no end. This coming May 2019, she will continue her calling, teaching dance at the Villa Roma in Callicoon: The Jackie Horner Dance Festival Week. Jackie is those stories of the Catskills. She is the legends. She is the intricate, demanding dance routines, performed by the ResCo at the Forestburgh Playhouse. Jackie Horner is a legend in her own time.

Chrissy Pahucki, chair of the Hudson Valley Plein Air Festival (see pg. 27), paints representational acrylics that relate well to viewers as oftentimes they are easy to recognize scenes or ones that reflect what people do in their day-to-day activities or vacations. “If I can capture the essence of the place so that it connects with other busy people, then I’ve gotten lucky in being able to share that place and its spirit through my painting,” she states. Her solo show Summer Travels: Landscapes by Chrissy Pahucki, visually demonstrates her interest “in the relationship between land and water and how water affects the colors, shapes and dynamics of landscapes.” She has received numerous awards from the plein air shows in which she has participated. Orpheus and Eurydice visit So. Fallsburg Chamber Music at St. Andrew’s offers an operatic exploration of the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice on October 27 at 7:30pm. One of the most famous Greek myths, it has inspired many important painters, such as Peter Paul Rubens and Nicolas Poussin, and many operas, songs and plays have been composed to honor these two great lovers who tragically lost the chance to enjoy their love on earth. The story of Orpheus and Eurydice has been told in many versions Sulgi Cho with a few differences between them. The earliest account comes from Ibycus (circa 530 BC), a Greek lyric poet. The evening features music on this theme by JS Bach, Henry Purcell, George Frideric Handel, Georg Philipp Telemann, Christoph Willibald Gluck, Jacques Offenbach, Johann Gottlieb Graun, Riccardo Broschi and JC Bach performed by the Baroque Aria Ensemble: Roan Ma (violin), Clara Cho (cello), and Eva Ding (flute), with Kenneth Cooper conducting from the harpsichord. The cast includes sopranos Sulgi Cho, So-Chung Shinn, and Jianing Zhang and tenor Lincoln Lin. The concert takes place at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 5277 Route 42, South Fallsburg. View work by Cobalt students at the LMAC every Saturday from October 20November 10. An opening reception will be held on October 20 from 2:00pm-4:00pm.

Scott Reeves Jazz Orchestra: Big Band Jazz at its Very Best by Philip Ehrensaft Scott Reeves is a musician’s musician: a highly regarded composer and arranger for Big Apple jazz performers; ditto as a choice trombonist and flugelhorn player; and ditto again as a tenured music prof at the City University of New York, and the author of a book on jazz improvisation, now in a fourth edition, that’s used by music faculties across the USA. Until recently, Reeves’ exceptional talents were less known to the wider jazz public. That’s changed thanks to two recent, outstanding recordings by the seventeen-piece Scott Reeves Jazz Orchestra: Portraits and Places (2016) and Without A Trace (2018). Two words stand out in Edward Blanco’s review of Reeves’ latest disk for All About Jazz: “a masterpiece.” After listening to Without A Trace several times over, I thoroughly agree. Jazz At Lincoln Center inaugurated its Big Band Mondays series on September 3rd with a double set by the Scott Reeves Jazz Orchestra. That’s the level of music we’ll have the privilege of hearing in Middletown. Standard is not the term for Reeves’ rise to top levels in the Darwinian world capital of jazz. Reeves came into this world in Park Ridge, Illinois. The region’s strong support for high school jazz big bands drew Reeves into the music. Not to mention all the live and radio jazz one could catch in Chicago proper.

Step 2 was the pioneering jazz studies department at the Indiana University Bloomington’s Jacobs School of Music, which was on its way to becoming one of America’s top classical music faculties, a faculty that had the smarts to recognize that jazz had become an original American art music that was now spreading across the world. After Bloomington, Reeves established the dual career path opened by America’s proliferating college jazz programs: as a prof and as a pro performer. Then, at the ripe young age of 49, only one year away from an AARP card, he took on the Darwinian jazz challenge of New York City. He became the equivalent of a mature grad student by enrolling in the Jazz Composers Workshop run by BMI, an organization representing the rights of composers and songwriters. That experience transformed Reeves’ jazz composing. Big Apple recognition of his talent led to a full

Reeves’ Master Class

How to Play Jazz is the topic for a master class provided by Scott Reeves, pianist Jim Ridl and drummer/percussionist Andy Watson, on October 19 at 11:00am. The class is free and open to the public in Orange Hall Room 23. “Master classes are excellent vehicles for jazz fans to learn how the music is made. Unlike sausage making, this is something we want to see. Especially when Reeves takes the lead.” - Philip Ehrensaft Orange Hall is located at the corner of Wawayanda and Grandview Avenues (GPS: 24 Grandview Avenue), Middletown. professorship in the City University of New York. A chunk of that professorial salary was ploughed into creating Reeves’ own 17-piece big band, the vehicle for performing Reeves’ jazz compositions. Learning from Jim McNeally at BMI, Reeves moved away from starting with standard 32bar song theme, then improvisations, and then back to the theme. Reeves current works are through-composed, building ideas than unfold successively. Thad Jones got him thinking about stretching jazz harmonies into dissonances that make music neither sweet nor harsh. Studying Gil Evans’ arrangements led Reeves to unusual, beautiful combinations of instruments and musical colors. And then back to Duke Ellington’s keeping things interesting by never repeating. The net result of all of the above is what we’ll savor at SUNY Orange in Middletown on October 19 at 7:30pm. However, Jazz in the Evening begins at 6:30pm in Orange Hall Gallery with jazz standards being played by SUNY Orange select music students. Owen Moore-sax, Chris Leon-flute, Sean Noonan-bass, Anthony Aprile-guitar, and Darius Beckford-piano. Free + open to the public. Tickets for the main concert are available in the box office starting at 6:15pm on October 19. Students admitted free. See ad page 19 for location and details.
