CANVAS Tidbits

Live from the Met in HD by Derek Leet The concepts of an inquisition and inquisitorial procedure lie deep in the roots of world history. Inquisitions were used during the decline of the Roman Empire until the Spanish Inquisition's decline in the early 1800s. An inquisition can be run by both civil and church authorities in order to root out “non-believers” from a nation or for political purposes. The Spanish Inquisition, 1478-1834, was one of the most deadly inquisitions in history. Around the 1540s the Spanish Inquisition turned its fire on the Protestants in Spain in an attempt to further “unify” the nation. Set against this backdrop, Verdi’s Don Carlos is a dramatic opera based on the play by Friedrich Schiller. The story is based on conflicts in the life of Carlos, Prince of Asturias (1545-1568) after his betrothed Elisabeth of Valois was married instead to his father Philip II of Spain as part of the peace treaty ending Spain’s war with Italy. It depicts how the Inquisition was used for political purposes, rather than religious, in this instance. Some opera enthusiasts, mostly those who prefer male voices I suspect, claim Don Carlos is Verdi’s greatest “grand” opera, as opposed to Aida, Trovatore, Forza, et al. Go see it and decide for yourself. Don Carlos Live from the Met in HD is at Sullivan County Community College, December 11 at 12:30pm, starring some the finest male singingactors in the world today, including Roberto Alagna in the title role, Simon Keenlyside, Ferruccio Furlanetto, and Eric Halvarson. The distaff side includes Maria Poplavskaya and Anna Smirnova. For tickets: 845-434-5750, ext. 4472.

Destination...... Throwing Pot in Montgomery!

Snuggled into a hand-crafted bowl containing a multitude of tempting reasons to visit the historic village of Montgomery is one claiming the existence of a pot shop. Nancy Michaels' Pottery, located at 70 Union St., has drawn the attention and admiration of many visitors to this charming village. Her creative designs in the production of utilitarian pieces result in an inspired product, reflecting visual satisfaction and practicality Her pottery is a ceramic formed by inorganic materials that are subjected to high temperatures in a process known as kiln firing. Clay is a common material subjected to manual manipulation providing a functional and/or decorative

vessel or object. Generally, various ceramics are produced in potteries and are sold in "pot shops." As an interesting aside, "pot shop," as in this article, is a phrase frequently used as an attention gathering device. Nancy refers to her labor as "throwing pots," a catchy term that refers to the manual manipulation of clay on a spinning surface. The work of a potter, if not the oldest profession, is certainly one to be considered as possibly the oldest art form. Nancy received her training at the Bostree Studio and Gallery in Sugar Loaf. A worthy note is a portion of her work replicates designs and purposes prevalent in 19th century American pottery, which complements Nancy's antique shop, Olde Towne Antiques, that shares the premises on which the pottery is located. Nancy's creations will be for sale and exhibit at the Di Bello Gallery, 3 Wallkill Ave., Montgomery through the month of December. Di Bello Gallery is adjacent to the Montgomery Village Museum, the Orange County Firefighters' Museum and Historic Ward's Bridge Inn. Additional information is available at 845-457-2773.

..........Montgomery.......... DINING OUT: When the Moon Hits Your Eye by J A. Di Bello Whether singing the lyrics or humming the melody, the image, taste, smell and feel of the iconic Pizza can cause one to smile, drool or even fall in love. Folk lore and the cinema reflect the dubious notion that the notorious crooner Dean Martin was primarily responsible for the popularity of what has become an American staple. Turn right, turn left, go straight ahead. Every town, city and village in America has those special culinary wizards whose inspired labor is to make the ultimate, irresistible Pizza Pie. Some roll them; some caress them. Others throw them spinning through the air with the skill and timing of a trained high-wire artist. The Village of Montgomery, known to many as the "Culinary Capital of Orange County" is an active participant in this phenomenon. Located equidistant between Middletown and Newburgh, Montgomery Village boasts of three establishments, each noted, respected and admired for its Pizza. But what kind of pizza is it? There's New York Pizza, Chicago Pizza, California Pizza, Mexican Pizza, Sicilian Pizza, Grilled Pizza, Deep-Fried Pizza, Neapolitan Pizza and to preserve what's remains of ethnic origins: Focaccia! "Wikipedia" claims there's an

organization and geographic area dedicated to the "true, unadulterated, original MiddleEastern, Mediterranian Pizza." L' Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana (True Neapolitan Pizza Association), founded in 1984 recognizes only the Marinara and Margherita pizzas and has set specific rules that must be followed for an authentic Neapolitan pizza. Although not the subject here, a Margherita Pizza boasts the colors of the Italian flag: green, white and red. Each represented respectively by fresh basil, mozzarella cheese and tomato sauce. The Marinara Pizza is traditional pizza shell, flat bread tastefully camouflaged with tomato, oregano, garlic and lots of extra virgin olive oil. Montgomery Village pizza shops are strategically located to insure that no one passes without being seduced by signage claiming with justifiable pride the glories of the ultimate, irresistible Pizza Pie. Entering the village from the south on Union St., one finds Mike's Deli, specializing in take-outs and located adjacent to Montgomery Elementary School. Accommodating and gregarious owners Neil Diana and MaryAnn Sabatino-Kline are members of a family long associated with fine Italian restaurants. Neil reports that the Buffalo Chicken Pizza is their most popular takeout. Interestingly, neither was acquainted

with the preservation society mentioned above. In the center of the village, corner of Clinton and Union, is a recent and friendly arrival to the village restaurant scene: Gino's Pizzeria and Family Restaurant, offering take-outs and an appealing, extensive eat-in menu. Owner Tom Endrizzi has included the traditional Margherita Pizza on his menu. The most requested eat-in pizza at Gino's is the Chicken-Bacon-Ranch combination, while the ever appealing, traditional Neapolitan pizza with cheese and tomato sauce remains a popular take-out. As with the other establishments, the Neapolitan Pizza Association was an unfamiliar term. Entering the village from the east requires your presence in the neighborhood of Tarantella's Pizza Alley. Although not exactly in an alley, this comfortable restaurant has a neighborhood atmosphere that welcomes those seeking the ultimate pizza treat. Owners Richard and Jared Kurisko, are personable and offer a variety of specialties. Neither Richard nor brother Jared was familiar with the True Neapolitan Pizza Association, but in a small on-thepremises library, wisely designed to keep children occupied, there was a short story book describing the contest and origin of the Margherita Pizza (green, white and red).

The most popular take-out pizza at Tarantella's: The Buffalo Chicken Pizza. Most popular eat-in: Cheeseburger-FrenchFry-Deep-Dish Pizza. Wow!! No matter how you slice it - pun intended - Montgomery's culinary notoriety is legitimate and features a variety of experiences designed to delight the most discriminating of palates. .... that's l'amore.

..Destination Montgomery J.A. Di Bello The Farmer's Child is a free verse narrative composed by Robert H. Score. It stands on its own merits as a prologue in a greater work, Ghost Whistle, a lament recalling the events of the Great War and its influence on an Orange County family, specifically a family residing in Montgomery. As with numerous Montgomery families, the Scores were touched by the ravages of war and The Ghost Whistle recognizes the tragedies as well as the heroics of soldiers and civilians during the most trying of times. The author will present his work orally at

the Di Bello Gallery on December 5 at 4:30pm. Further, it remains the belief of Score and the Gallery that poetry and prose should provide stimuli to the mind as well as the soul. Thus, an oral interpretation opens another path to that end. Score is a native son of Montgomery, well versed in the agriculture that was the life blood of his community. He has been able to record much of those days with nostalgic pen and ink drawings and his work embellishes many prestigious homes in and around Orange County. His art work, celebrating the village's bicentennial is currently on display at the Di Bello Gallery, 3 Wallkill Ave., Montgomery.

THE FARMER’S CHILD by Robert H. Score Prologue The Farmer's Child I was, Years and years ago, A farmer's child. I lived on a farm On a one lane dirt road In the middle of nowhere With my Mom and Dad, My two older brothers, and my grandparents, Ma and Harry........ Yea... that's right My best friend Harry!! They said I was too light for heavy work And too heavy for light work So......... I stuck close to Harry And listened to all his tales............. of years and years ago. Sometimes he had to go and do The work I was either too light or too heavy to do. And That's when I drifted off. Off To my magical world: A land of rolling hills,

Fermenting swamps, Lush pastures, Frog infested ponds, And, of course, a woodlot, A life -giving woodlot. This enchanted land of mine, Was defined by Wandering wagon roads Now lined by stonewall fences. I was king! King of it all! A kingdom of cornfields! Pastures and hayfields! My castle: The barn, As grand as the Taj ! Where I sat on a throne of golden bales, My kingdom, you must know, Stretched from dawn to places far... Far into a darkened night. For I had before me hay bales, hounds, And crazy little kittens. I flew recklessly through fields of grain And sailed ships on streams and ponds, And I wished upon a Harvest Moon To forever be A farmer's child.

Holiday at the Library

You can celebrate the season with barbershop-style holiday music on Sunday, December 12 at 3:00pm. at the Newburgh Free Library. The free concert features "After Hours", a women’s acapella quartet singing four-part harmony. Based in Poughkeepsie, quartet members are part of the Evergreen Chorus of Sweet Adelines, International. Refreshments will be supplied by the Friends of the Newburgh Free Library. The event is part of the City of Newburgh’s annual Candlelight Tour. For information, call the Newburgh Free Library, 845-563-3600 or 563-3619.

In the history of the United States, no issue has been more contentious, politically, economically, or morally, than that of slavery, the outright ownership of human beings. It was a controversial institution in the nation from the 1770s to the 1860s and one of the principal issues leading to the American Civil War. The Karpeles Manuscript Museum will display original documents, illustrations, and memorabilia relating to the slave trade, the efforts at its suppression, and its historical consequences, from before the American Revolution to modern times, through the month of December.

by Vicki Botta Many have heard Handel's Messiah and even those who haven't are at least familiar with its “Hallelujah Chorus”. What most people don't know is that Handel made several different versions to accommodate the ability of those who sang it. In fact, two of the eight selections to be performed by the MUSE - early music chamber ensemble - are versions performed in 1742 in Dublin in a special performance. According to Jonathan Dobin, Director of MUSE and an aficionado of Handel, Handel was invited by the Charitable Music Society of Dublin to help raise money for flood and famine victims after an arctic freeze the previous year caused floods in the spring that ruined crops. For the Dublin performance, the arias, "But Who May Abide" and "Rejoice Greatly" were in different forms than those we are familiar with today. Some of the actual Dublin versions were eliminated and replaced by other songs and choruses. According to Dobin, the basic structure of the work remained as in the 1741 version but a lot of arias were changed or transposed or completely rewritten. For example, later on in London, Handel discarded the original version of "But Who May Abide" (as sung in the concert) and created the version, which became more famous and is standard today, for a castrato named Guadagni. The first version was written for bass and didn't have a real prestissimo section. It was also less theatrical. Dobin says that Handel finished writing Messiah, his most famous oratorio, after being inspired by his good friend Charles Jennen's libretto. Handel was at Jennen's home in 1741 retreating from depression that he suffered after a personal financial crisis. MUSE was founded by Dobin in 1982 for the purpose of performing music of the Renaissance, Baroque and Early American Periods (through early 19th century) with vocal solos and ensembles, instrumental music and live period dance performances. It concertized extensively throughout NYC and the tri-state area for nearly 10 years, garnering grants for pioneering reconstructions of early American music and dance. The group halted performances in 1992 after Jonathan Dobin recovered from a near fatal accident. After moving to Newburgh his "new hometown" in 2006, Jonathan was encouraged to start MUSE again. He has assembled an ensemble of some of the Hudson Valley's finest singers, instrumentalists and dancers for MUSE's first concert in nearly 20 years. This is MUSE's first concert as a 501(c)(3) organization and second fundraiser of the fall season for the Opera Company of the Highlands, Claudia Cummings director, which will receive all

of the money generated by ticket sales. In the MUSE performance Jeremy Moore is the baritone who will sing "But Who May Abide" while soprano soloist Suzanne Clune will sing "Rejoice Greatly" in its original jig-like style. Other performers include: Jennifer Ponzoni, David Mason, Michelle Jacobsen, Ingrid Narken, Anthony Cinelli and Dobin. The MUSE chamber ensemble is comprised of well-known area musicians, Lynn Cunningham, Donna Kushner, Piotr Kargul, Nancy Wegrzyn, Gordon Shacklett and Andrew Benson, with Dobin at the harpsichord. Also performing are dance solists Dorothy Olsson, Barbara Kidney, and Andrew Dalton. Additionally, this concert is being performed in conjunction with The Historical Society of Greater Newburgh and the Highlands' annual "Candlelight Tour" as well as its host church, one of Newburgh's oldest architectural gems, Calvary Presbyterian Church, Pastor Steven Reulke, MUSE has plans for the upcoming seasons to perform John Blow's opera Venus and Adonis, Heinrich Schutz's "Christmas Story" as well as "The Nest of Love" (music of love from the Renaissance, Baroque and Colonial Periods) as well as other unique programs. Contributions to MUSE are tax deductible and will be listed accordingly in all future programs. together to reveal how paper cutting is igniting the imaginations of today's contemporary artists. These artists explore a spectrum of techniques from the most basic cutting, folding, tearing, and collage, which expose the infinite possibilities of the medium that makes for the creation of innovative art. The exhibition is on view at the Ann Street Gallery (behind the Ritz Theater), weekends through Saturday, December 18.

Funded by Orange County Executive, Ed Diana, the “Banner Project” was a Newburgh School System contest for which elementary school kids created artworks for the Hudson River Quadricenntenial. Some of the winning art can now be seen on lamposts along Colden Street at the foot of Broadway near the Newburgh Campus of Orange County Community College. More of the students’ artworks will be added later. People can donate to this worthy cause to help with the transferring of the drawings and paintings for permanent installation. Classic Choral Society Orange County’s Classic Choral Society’s annual (51st year!) Holiday “Comfort & Joy” Concerts are different this year. Instead of the usual major choral work being performed, this year they are going for the ‘warm & fuzzy’ feeling for holiday music. In fact, the audience will be invited to join the singers at the end of the program to sing favorite carols with the chorus and huge pipe organ. Janiece Kohler “This year, the singers and I have the distinct pleasure of working for the first time with Peter Hommel, who is the brand new music director at the United States Military Academy, West Point Post Chapel”, announced Artisitic Director Janiece Kohler. “This is a treat for everybody involved...especially me.” Classic Choral Society concerts have been free and open to the public since 1959! Donations, through a free-will offering

received at all the concerts, are what keep the Choral Society going. There will be two performances: Sunday, December 12 at 4:00pm at the United Church of Christ on Route 94 and Old Dominion Road in Blooming Grove, and Saturday, December 18 at 7:00pm in the First Prebysterian Church, 33 Park Place (at village square) in Goshen. Nutty Nutcracker One of the area’s favorite Nutcracker performances is the Hudson Valley Conservatory’s (HVC) “cracked up” version, an hilarious, brilliantly conceived, nutty interpretation of the seasonal classic. Cracked up and nuttier than the traditional tale, Clara and her Prince journey from under the Christmas tree to under the big top in a whimsical world where they encounter winter-white school kids, popcorn angels, candycane acrobats, and many more hilarious big top characters. “Come and share in the magic of this classic tale seen in a whole new light, creating holidays memories that will last a lifetime.” At the New Rose Theater in Walden, December 16-19.
