Publisher’s Column by Barry Plaxen Synchronicity of the month: Two Newburgh galleries offering different aspects of Women’s Suffrage: artistic expressions in Ann Street Gallery, and historical documents and photos at the Crawford House. Vocabulary Lesson: Foley: (named after sound-effects artist Jack Foley) is the reproduction of everyday sound effects that are added to film, video, and other media. These reproduced sounds can be anything from the swishing of clothing and footsteps to squeaky doors and breaking glass. Pochade: A pochade (from French poche,

pocket) is a type of sketch used in painting. As opposed to a croquis, which is line art, a pochade captures the colors and atmosphere of a scene. Generally, pochades use a small, portable format. In this issue: I am bowled over by what is available in this small regional area in the way of Holiday Recreation and Entertainment. Besides the incredible number of seasonal chorale concerts, Nutcrackers and other holiday music events including Handel’s Messiah, there’s a play about Scrooge’s business partner in Ellenville, a colonial era concert in Cornwall, animals & insects in lights in Montgomery, Bach jig-ified in Bethel, house tours in Newburgh and

Letters to the Editor Bravo / Brava! I was (as Jo says) “gobsmacked” to see that handsome layout and write-up for “War in the Arts: Redeeming Spirits.” Thank you both for the care and time you took in creating it. CANVAS traveled across the region and the country with this issue, to New Paltz and to Arizona; to those artists whose work you used for the article. - Karen E. Gersch Thank you so much for including the piece about my students’ war poems and my cloud photography in “Art - Photography - Film - Music - Poetry - Prose at SUNY Orange, Middletown.” We greatly appreciate it. I will be posting the article and photographs of the exhibit on Facebook so my former students can see it and inspire them to come to the SUNY ORANGE Middletown campus. The exhibit was amazing. The diverse

nature of the artwork and writing, and the exhibit’s set-up, were so well done. I thought the poetry was powerful. It is difficult combining long free-verse poetry/ text with artwork/photographs/images. The writing, at times, overpowers the art/ paintings. Credit goes to Dorothy Szefc, her assistants, and all others to make this event such a success. - Jeffrey Pflaum

SUNY ATTAIN: Valuable Community Resource SUNY ATTAIN (Advanced Technology Training & Information Networking) is a community based center offering an array of academic, occupational, and employability courses. These free courses introduce students to educational and vocational skills through advanced technology training. Sullivan County author, playwright and performance artist Leora Cassells found the SUNY ATTAIN Lab’s disciplined setting to be the perfect environment to work without distraction on the creation and editing of her latest book, Musings and Amusings. “I’ve been using the lab for about 4 years now. I had an idea for a one-woman show, so I was jotting down notes by hand and keeping them in a file. Once I found the lab, I was able to sit down, uninterrupted, and type up all of my notes,” said Leora. “I’ve used the lab to type up my play, my book, and even flyers and invitations to my shows. “The Lab Technology Coordinators, Lori Boyd and Yoly Avella, have been so patient and kind with me. If I am having any trouble at all I just raise my hand and they come along and help me. I could not have done all this without the lab. I cannot tell you how wonderful this program is!” Operating under the auspices of the SUNY Research Foundation and the University

Contemporary artist Kurtis Brand’s work follows the ebb and flow of his travels over the years, living in an RV and practicing in Zen centers across America. Brand’s strongest

In much of his portfolio, you see the torture of human suffering working its way to the surface, seeking answers to find clarity and realization. Each piece illuminates a part of an experience brought into view. No 1940’s X-mas ornaments further ornaments were imported until after World War II due to the British Blockade. The Corning Glass Company stepped in and, by converting a light bulb making machine to one that made ornaments, began producing them for Christmas of ‘39. The first wartime ornaments were made from glass, but were not silvered on the inside. That made them appear very dull, so they were decorated with a sprig of tinsel on the inside to make them sparkle. Landmark Collectibles, a gift shop offering Newburgh memorabilia, novelties, vintage clothing and much more, has a collection of

1940’s Christmas ornaments at great prices. Give the gift of an original 40’s ornament or buy a few to decorate your own tree! Landmark Collectibles is located at 103 Liberty Street, Newburgh. Call 845-561-6596. RIVER VALLEY ARTISTS GUILD

A document was recently found among the papers at the Blooming Grove United Church of Christ that were saved from the Hurricane Sandy flood of the church’s basement. Dated March 16, 1820 and signed by Samuel Moffatt, Isaac Still, and John Jaques, it outlines a Choral Society’s formation in the Town of Blooming Grove (Washingtonville). “We the Subscribers have Thought proper to Form A Singing Society for the purpose of practiseing in Singing...” Almost 200 years later: “I am amazed and humbled, but very proud. The rest is history - and we’re part of it!,” announced Classic Choral Society director Janiece Kohler. “This year, our Blooming Grove ‘Singing

December 2017

Society’ will be accompanied by full orchestra - it’s going to be a very exciting, joyful musical experience,” said Kohler. The featured work will be Carol Cantata Suites by Robert Russell Bennett (a composer/ arranger who orchestrated many well-known Broadway and Hollywood musicals). “We performed this work almost two decades ago, and it was very well received,” said Kohler. “Each suite features exquisite settings of beloved carols that showcase the chorus’ skills, and are enhanced further by the orchestral accompaniment.” The other selections to be performed include Vom Himmel Hoch by Felix Mendelssohn, and Sing We Now of Christmas, a contemporary work by Randol Alan Bass that incorporates audience participation, so guests get to sing along with the Society and Orchestra in a grand finale. The Christmas cantata Vom Himmel Hoch is based on the eponymous Christmas song by Martin Luther. The choral piece played a major role in Mendelssohn’s oeuvre, not least because of his preoccupation with Bach’s work. It includes a five-part mixed choir (SSATB), soloists and an orchestra. Classic Choral Society maintains a distinctive, sonorous quality of sound, attributed in no small part to Maestra Kohler’s unfailing

ear and devotion to authenticity. She has been Artistic Director and Principal Conductor for the Classic Choral Society since 1991. Concerts are scheduled for December 10 at 4:00pm at United Church of Christ, 2 Old Dominion Road, Blooming Grove, and on December 17 at 4:00pm at First Presbyterian Church, 33 Park Place, Goshen. Just as no two snowflakes are alike, no two singers or compositions are the same. Snowflakes gathered together can produce some mighty storms, or mighty performances! Conductor Kevin Giroux’s theme for the Sullivan County Community Chorus’ 41st annual winter concert is Choral Snowflakes. The Chorus consists of members from Sullivan County, whose ages range from 16 to over 80. The concert selections include energetic and rousing African Noels, the powerful 20th century classic Ave Maria

Chorale Concerts by Franz Biebl, arrangements of seasonal classics by John Rutter and André Thomas, as well as the majestic baroque glory of Bach’s Magnificat in D accompanied by Chamber Orchestra. The performance will also feature guest performers, and the Sullivan Chamber Singers, selected by audition from the chorus. In appreciation of the 41 years of support from the community, there will be no admission charged; however, free will donations will be graciously accepted. Immediately following the December 10, 2:30pm performance at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 6317 Route 42, Woodbourne, there will be a reception open to all attending. Snow date: December 17 at 2:30pm. For information: 845-439-4458. NEWBURGH: 3 CHOIRS & A TENOR HAIL! HAIL! The gang’s all here! It’s the Newburgh Symphonic Chorale, (NSC) and guests: the SUNY New Paltz Chamber Singers, Jubilate, tenor Brother B. Britten Josep Martinez-Cubero, and harpist Anna Belliveau. Jubilate (pronounced yoo-bih-LAH-tay) is

a vibrant, co-ed choir of musically talented, dedicated youth in grades 5-12. The choir members hail from communities throughout the lower Hudson Valley Writing specifically for the resources available to him at Lancing College, Benjamin Britten scored Saint Nicolas for mixed choir, tenor soloist, three or four boys, strings, piano duet, organ and percussion. Saint Nicolas marks Britten’s first professional work intended primarily for performance by amateur musicians. The text of Saint Nicolas was written by Eric Crozier after extensive research into the legendary life of Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, Lycia (270-343). Crozier’s libretto paints a dramatically bold portrait of the saint’s character, exaggerating the legends and glory that have accumulated over the centuries around Nicholas’ story. Originally conceived as a series of unrelated songs, Ceremony of Carols was later unified into one piece with the framing processional and recessional chant in unison based on the Gregorian antiphon Hodie Christus natus est, heard at the beginning and the end. A harp solo based on the chant, along with a few other motifs from Wolcum Yole, also serves to unify the composition. In addition, the movements This Little Babe and

Deo Gracias have the choir reflecting harplike effects by employing a canon. Many of the movements are written as rounds or calland-response pieces - lyrically simple for the sake of the children performing. Under the baton of NSC Director Peter Sipple, they will perform Britten’s Saint Nicolas and his Ceremony of Carols in St. George’s Church, 105 Grand Street, Newburgh on December 10 at 4:00pm. A free will offering will be taken. MIDDLETOWN The Middletown Concert Chorale in its 21st year, under the direction of Danielle Cornacchio and accompanied by Boyd Herforth, announces its 2017 concert series Deck A. Vivaldi The Halls. The concert highlights Vivaldi’s Gloria. Vivaldi wrote at least three settings of the hymn Gloria in excelsis Deo. Two survive: RV 588 and RV 589. A third, RV 590, is presumed lost. The Glorias remained in a relatively unknown status, until RV 589’s revival by Alfredo Casella during “Vivaldi Week” in Siena (1939). RV 589 enjoys wellfounded popularity and has been recorded

on almost one hundred CDs. In addition to the Gloria, there will be many familiar holiday favorites along with members of the Chorale performing a cabaret segment. December 9 at 7:00pm at St. Paul’s Methodist Church, 58 West Main St. Middletown; and December 17 at 3:00pm at North Congregational Church, 96 North Beacon St., Middletown. Reception with light fare to follow. For info: 845-386-4398 or 845-391-7524. MIDDLETOWN, GOSHEN & WARWICK “Directed by Stanley Curtis and accompanied by Gail Johnson, the Warwick Valley Chorale concerts will feature Baroque cantatas, traditional carols, and Christmas classics accompanied by a stringed ensemble, with more than 80 voices performing musical treasures from the 17th21st centuries, plus many more favorite songs and carols of the season. At the Grace Episcopal Church, 58 North St., Middletown on December 8 at 7:00pm; Goshen United Methodist Church, 111 Main St., on December 15 at 7:00pm, and St. Stephen’s RC Church, 75 Sanfordville Road, Warwick, on December 17 at 4:00pm. Hallelujah! Let Hudson Opera Theater Orchestra Comfort Ye! “Dazzling solos, instrumental fireworks, and glorious choral writing.” NY Times. Ron De Fesi expounds (coincidentally without seeing the above NY Times quote): “Before writing Messiah, Handel had written some 42 operas. He understood, all too well, how to imbue the music with character and drama. He was, in fact, a lot like Verdi who, having written 26 operas, set to work on the great Requiem. It was criticized for being a ‘opera in ecclesiastical garb’, and interestingly, Handel’s Messiah endured the same criticism. “But how was Handel to have written it any differently? He was a master of converting human emotion into music! Let me speak about the choruses first. Handel’s operas have pitifully few choruses, and these were most often sung by the principals from backstage. They were generally simple in form and harmony. But with the oratorios, Handel was able to use his not unsubstantial command of harmony, counterpoint and word-painting to create some of the most addicting musical and choral moments in history. “If George II never actually was at a performance of Messiah, and never actually stood to express his wonder at hearing the voices of the angels singing ‘Hallelujah’, he should have! ...because we, some 270-odd years later, are still moved by the music and we stand, not because the king stood (or didn’t), but because we must acknowledge the genius, the inspiration, the skill to have composed

such music that transcends time and style and musical tastes. Almost without exception, the Messiah choruses are wonderful! The sheer joy of For Unto Us a Child Is Born; the tragedy of Behold the Lamb of God; the spell-binding power of Worthy Is the Lamb that Was Slain; and the utter ecstasy of the Hallelujah. “The writing for the soloists, full of exquisite word-painting and lush melodies, gives us a huge variety of characterizations: from the profoundly tender and caring tenor of Comfort Ye, My People and the slightly ashamed Thy Rebuke Hath Broken His Heart, to the bass’s fiery Old-Testament-prophet-like ravings of ‘... and I will shake the Heav’ns and the Earth...’ and Why Do the Nations So Furiously Rage Together? And from the deeply despairing alto of He Was Despisèd, and the simple and graceful How Beautiful Are the Feet, to the soprano’s angelic sequences always delivering the best news, Rejoice Greatly, I Know That My Redeemer Liveth and If God Be for Us,

December 2017

Who Can Be against Us? “The entire work (all 3+ hours of it) never ceases to show us a kaleidoscope of images, emotions and concepts, and all with the most elegant and stylish musical expression, always unfolding like the petals of a flower to shower more and more light on us!” Laurence Cummings, director of the London Handel Orchestra writes: “In most of Handel’s oratorios, the soloists dominate and the choir sings only brief choruses. But in Messiah, the chorus propels the work forward with great emotional impact and uplifting messages. “Amassing a fortune through his music and shrewd investments in London’s burgeoning stock market, Handel donated munificently to orphans, retired musicians and the ill. (He gave his portion of his Messiah debut proceeds to a debtors’ prison and hospital in Dublin.) A sense of humanity imbues his music as well - a point often made by conductors who compare Handel with Bach. But where Bach’s oratorios exalted God, Handel was more concerned with the feelings of mortals. “In 1759, when he was blind and in failing health, Handel insisted on attending an April 6 performance of Messiah at the Theatre Royal in Covent Garden. Eight days later, Handel died at home. “Handel knows better than any of us what will make an effect. When he chooses, he strikes like a thunderbolt.” - W.A. Mozart. GNSO’s First-Ever “First Noel” The Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra (GNSO) will perform its first-ever holiday concert, The First Noel, under the direction of Maestro Russell Ger. The concert will feature Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite and an array of beloved seasonal classics, including O Holy Night, Away in a Manger, and Deck the Halls, as well as Hannukah favorites. “I have always loved holiday music,” says Mr. Ger. “It clearly appeals to a broad audience, cutting across age and religious lines. The opportunity for the GNSO to bring it to our expanding Hudson River Valley audience is one that I cherish. This will be fun for the family, particularly because we will introduce some exciting young soloists,” he noted. Soprano Erica Spyres grew up singing, acting, and playing the violin. She has served as the concert master of several orchestras, performed for Daniel O’Donnell’s PBS special, and has been a studio musician for many recording artists. Bass baritone Adrian Rosas has performed with the Seattle Opera, Opera Theatre of St. Louis,

Leo’s Restaurant, Cornwall: Nita Klein A resident of Cornwall-onHudson since 1970, artist Nita Klein says she used to “work with acrylic, but I now prefer watercolors. I like being loose with the way I create. Watercolors allow you to get your paws right in there and move the painting around.” Nita’s work has been exhibited in both local and national venues including Palisades Interstate Park, Hudson River Valley Association, Museum of the Hudson Highlands, and Marymount College, among others. “One of my greatest achievements in the art world was being chosen to exhibit at the Sibley Gallery in Nantucket. They would have art collectors come in by shuttlebus from NYC to Nantucket. I sold every single one of my paintings! An added bonus: the daughter of one of my favorite artists, Milton Avery, was there as well, exhibiting her father’s work.” Nita loves painting nature - directly from her kitchen window. “It starts with me making a sketch, and then eventually painting in watercolors. I live in a very pretty area right now as I speak to you leaves are falling down in glorious colors. I like to grow plants, and even sunflowers in season and then bring them inside my home and paint them.” Nita has won several awards, among

them the 2006 Orange County Arts Grant, and her painting of a pear appeared on the cover of Valley Table magazine. In 2013 Nita was awarded the “Best Watercolor Artist of 2012” by the Times Herald-Record. Her work is included in institutional and private collections in the U.S, South America and Australia. Her artworks have just traveled from her most recent exhibit at the Newburgh Free Library to Leo’s Restaurant & Pizzeria, 22 Quaker Avenue, Cornwall, where they will be displayed throughout the month of December. “I am showing my nature works...flowers, a barn, a little bit of everything,” said Nita. Any advice for budding artists? “Keep going! Believe in yourself. Go after those colors and shapes, sketch them and continue on. Holiday Classic with a Shadowland Twist “Scrooge? I have to redeem old Scrooge? The one man I knew who was worse than I was? Impossible!” So begins the real story behind Dickens’ A Christmas Carol - the Sean Cullen story of Jacob Marley’s heroic behind-the-scenes efforts to save old Scrooge’s soul - and in the process, save his own. Dickens’ classic tale of greed redeemed into hope, kindness, and love is now told in a new holiday play by Tom Mula from a very unusual point-of-view in Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol, a charming seasonal classic with a signature Shadowland twist! “Marley was dead, to begin with...” And what happens to Ebenezer Scrooge’s mean, sour, pruney old business partner after that? Chained and shackled, Marley is condemned to a hellish eternity. He’s even given his own private tormentor: a malicious little hellsprite who thoroughly enjoys his work. Desperate, Marley accepts his one chance to free himself: To escape his own chains, he must first redeem Scrooge. So begins a journey of laughter and terror, redemption and renewal, during which Scrooge’s heart, indeed, is opened; but not before Marley in this irreverent, funny and deeply moving

story - discovers his own. Brought to life with a soundscape of music and foley live on stage, this immortal tale stands out from the crowd as an epic journey that the whole family can enjoy. Find Julia Register out just what happened to Scrooge’s wicked business partner as he takes his own theatrical voyage, with an imaginative cast of actors creating a wintery, magical world. “Nothing less than an anthem to human nature, to imagination, and to the wonder of a compelling story...an inspired and moving story that makes all that old stuff about ghosts and graves seem both immediate and revelatory...a splendid and invigorating evening!” - Chicago Tribune. Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol is directed by Brendan Burke, Shadowland Stages’ producing artistic director. The scenic designer is Josh Christensen, with lighting design by Parker Conzone, and sound design by Jeff Knapp. The technical director is Josh Christensen. The cast includes Sean Cullen, Paul Murphy, Julia Register and David Stallings. See it at Shadowland Stages, 157 Canal Street, Ellenville, from December 1-17. For tickets: 845-647-5511.

While enjoying a scrumptious meal, enjoy viewing artwork by Nita Klein at Leo’s Cornwall location throughout the month of December!

String Quartet & Woodwind Quintet Chamber Music is meant to be an intimate experience for the listeners as well as the musicians, and is often performed in relatively small places. Hence, the chamber music series title Classical Conversations adapted by the Paramount Chamber Players, an ensemble formed from members of the SUNY Orange Community Orchestra. For their next concert at Milkweed, they will present a string quartet, a flute quartet and a woodwind quintet in Milkweed’s informal and friendly setting. There will be some introductory discussions about chamber group formation and about the pieces to be played. Flute quartets normally consist of flute, violin, viola and cello, the configuration used by most composers. Often, however, band ensembles will sometimes perform music for four different sized flutes, and that configuration is also called a flute quartet. The impressive list of musicians includes Michael Aiese (bass),

Holiday Read Aloud in Florida

Reading aloud is the foundation for literacy development. Children can listen on a higher language level than they can read, so reading aloud makes complex ideas more accessible and exposes children to vocabulary and language patterns that are not part of everyday speech. It exposes less able readers to the same books that fluent readers read on their own, and entices them to become better readers.

Join the Florida Library for a special community Holiday Read Aloud of classic stories. Bring the whole family to share in these holiday favorites on December 9 at 2:00pm at 4 Cohen Circle, Florida. Light refreshments will be served. Register online at www.floridapubliclibrary.org or call 845-651-7659. Best for grades K and up.

Cookie Walks: Pine Bush & Wallkill

With a simple Martin D-35 guitar, banjo, harmonica, his own voice and the voices of the audience, Spook Handy presents acoustic songs that are true to the spirit, passion and purpose of American folk music. Spook shares the pearls of everyday life through songs that sing of humanity, culture, history, landscape

and values. The Rock Tavern Chapter of the Hudson Valley Folk Guild, at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 9 Vance Rd., Rock Tavern, will be featuring Spook Handy on December 9 at 7:30pm. Open mic performances available to all. For ticket information: 845-978-5620.

Part of the fun of a Cookie Walk is to see how many cookies you can pack in your container! The trick is to put the heaviest, most hearty cookies on the bottom and then build up from there! Put thin cookies along the sides and fill in spaces with the petite, light cookies. Be sure to save the most beautiful cookies for the top!

On December 6 beginning at 9:00am, start to fill your container up with delicious cookies during the Cookie Walks at the Pine Bush Library, 227 Maple Avenue, Pine Bush, the Mountain View Methodist Church, 91 Maple Avenue, Pine Bush, and the Reformed Church of Shawanagunk, 1166 Hoagerburgh Road, Wallkill. Be sure to share!

Group vocalizing is known from several animal species. For example, a lion pride and a pack of wolves are known to vocalize together (supposedly to defend their territory), although scholars do not characterize their vocalizations as singing. Gibbons sing in family groups (couples sing together, sometimes with their offspring). Singing in groups is one of the universal features of human musical cultures, and group singing has often been suggested as the primary

form of early human musical activity. It has been suggested that human group singing was primarily promoting the cohesiveness within human groups, and was possibly used to defend human groups from predators. The Neversink Valley Museum’s Christmas Holiday Concert and Sing-a-Long is on December 10, from 3:00pm-5:00pm at the D&H Canal Park Visitor’s Center, 58 Hoag Road, Cuddebackville. Colonial Holiday Concert in Cornwall

In the spirit of 18th century culture, Ministers of Apollo seek to replicate every detail in their dress. Upon closer examination, every seam is hand-stitched according to proper proportions, and the textiles are historically manufactured; some on original looms and dyed in researched colors. The buckles, buttons, and cufflinks are either original or replicas, and even the unseen garments are done in proper custom. Hair is styled according to original treatises, occasionally with hair starch, pomatum, and pins. “We feel these

steps necessary (and enjoyable) to recreating the music and atmosphere of the late 18th century,” they say. Ministers of Apollo will perform a Colonial Holiday Concert of harpsichord, flute and vocal music, in period costume. Join them for an entertaining and informative evening, December 7 at 6:30pm in the Cornwall Library, 395 Hudson Street. Phone: 845-534-8282. Visit: http://earlyamericanmusicandarts. com/3601.html for more information about Ministers of Apollo.

Explore the Shawangunks Sitting Down Nora Scarlett received numerous awards during her career as a commercial photographer in New York City. Upon moving to the Shawangunks in 1998, she was able to spend more time pursuing her love of the outdoors and visually documenting its wonders in her unique style. Looking for wacky formations, humorous characteristics, improbable locations, and surprising shapes, Nora created her Trunks of the Gunks series which was published last year. During the project she became awed at scene after scene displaying how life adapts to adversity and how it succeeds in astonishing ways. On December 3 at 1:00pm, the public is invited to Exploring the Shawangunks - a visual odyssey. Her stunning images will inspire and delight nature lovers, photographers, hikers and anyone who appreciates our remarkable landscape. From Minnewaska to Sam’s Point, and back to Mohonk, with many stops in between, join Nora on her visual odyssey through the Shawangunk Mountains in search of the unexpected. She will show images from some of her favorite places, including Lake Awosting, the Peterskill, Spruce Glen, Lost City and Gertrude’s Nose. May I Have A Word With You ... Quips, Quotes & Quiddities with Carol Pozefsky INDEPENDENT CLAWS Returning to the Guinness Book of Poisonous Quotes is not like returning to an old friend, but more like returning to an angry enemy. An anonymous art reviewer wrote, “They couldn’t find the artist so they hung the picture.” Time Out reviewer Nick Coleman’s take on the Michael Jackson movie Moonwalker: “Altogether a ghastly experience, which even a rabid 11 year old might well find patronizing and unimaginative.” Sylvester Stallone: “The only way to be a success here [Hollywood] is to be as obnoxious as the other guy.” Syndicated columnist Walter Winchell: “Hollywood, a town that has to be seen to be disbelieved.” Walter Winchell WHADDYA MEAN BY THAT? A Google search for National Lampoon co-founder Henry Beard will yield the words “genius, odd, reclusive, enigmatic, satirist, parodist...” We would add ‘interpreter’ based on Beard’s book, spin-glish, co-authored with Christopher Cerf. The book interprets

the true intention of the intentionally deceptive language we hear every day: “We value your call. Thank you for your patience.” = “We have Henry Beard better things to do than talk to you.” The real estate term “well-loved” = “previously owned and used a lot.” “While supplies last” = “We’re advertising this item at a ridiculously low price to get you into the store but we’re not likely to have any left when you get here but that’s okay we’ll just sell you something else.” WHO DOZEN KNOW THAT! A baker’s dozen is 13 rather than 12. In his book, Eating Well, author/chef Burt Wolf writes that the phrase dates back to the time when butlers ordered all the food for a household. When a butler chose a particular supplier for baked goods, for every twelve items he ordered for the family, he received a thirteenth free for himself as a reward, a baker’s dozen. APROPOS OF NOTHING An anagram of “Bill Nye the Science Guy”, is: “Intensely Huge Bicycle”.

The 13th Annual “Art in Sixes” The Delaware Valley Arts Alliance will host the 13th annual Art in Sixes small works exhibition. The first Art in Sixes launched in 2005 with 98 artworks. In 2016, it had grown to 528 pieces hung on seven walls, and the front window! In what has become a signature yearend event for the DVAA, the show features over 500 miniature artworks by local artists. “Thanks to all these artists, the exhibition is full of exciting, high quality artwork at affordable prices,” says gallery director Rocky Pinciotti. The 2017 art, which may not exceed six inches in any direction, covers a wide range

of studio mediums including painting, drawing, sculpture, fiber, ceramics, and photography. Although the work does not have to be exactly 6x6 inches, more and more artists each year are going with the 6-inch square format. Having many square works of the same size allows Pinciotti to create walls with a gridwork pattern that can feature up to 100 works of art evenly displayed in rows and columns. Art in Sixes at the DVAA’s Alliance Gallery, 37 Main Street, Narrowsburg, is on view through December 23. For information: 845-252-7576.

Artists Cathy Cahill, Lily Norton, Judy Byrne, and Cathy Prager are all from the Newburgh area and have been painting together for several years and exhibiting their works separately - often winning individual honors and awards at various area art shows and together under the title 4 Pastelists. The primary focus of each of the artists is the landscape of the beautiful Hudson River Valley. “I like putting my hands directly in the Art by Cathy Prager colors, it’s the most direct expression I can think of.
