From The Publisher... by Barry Plaxen Vocabulary Lesson: Melismatic: a style of singing first started in 900 AD and culminating in the Baroque era in which a single syllable of text is sung carried through many notes. This is in contrast to syllabic singing in which each syllable of text gets a single note. Polyphonic: producing many sounds simultaneously; many-voiced. First-person presentation: a narration that presents the narrative through the perspective of a particular character. The reader or audience becomes aware of the events and characters of the story through the narrator’s views and knowledge. Violinist Itzhak Perlman performed at the Presidential Inauguration of Barak Obama. What do these gifted artists have in common? The Juilliard School of Performing Arts in New York City. Middletown Concert Chorale Middletown: Dec. 14 & 15 The Middletown Concert Chorale in its 23rd year, under the direction of Danielle Cornacchio and accompanied by Boyd Herforth, announces its 2019 Winter Concert Series Celebrate In Song, featuring D. Cornacchio Christmas Oratorio by Camille Saint-Saëns along with a variety of other choral selections. Hudson Opera Theatre director/ conductor Ron De Fesi said in 2018: “You know, one of the things that I really like about the Christmas Oratorio, is that Saint-Saëns was only 23 when he wrote it. But, even at that ridiculously young age, he was able to capture the mood of a clear, chill night on an all-but-deserted hillside, a night that would change the course of the human experience. He shows us the simple songs of the shepherds, the glorious songs of the angels, the fervent songs of believers through the ages, and the majestic song of heaven to come. It’s pretty heady stuff for a 23-year old! And he wrote it in five days!” Some interesting and festive a cappella pieces will be performed during the second

portion of the concert. Between the two acts there will be a cabaret portion for your enjoyment! Nesin Cultural Arts: “Messiah” Sing-Along in Monticello

You may have seen these hands before in Monticello, Liberty, Grahamsville, White Lake, Callicoon and Narrowsburg, plucking away and fingering up and down on a double bass. They belong to Sullivan County Chamber Orchestra (SCCO) Music Director Andrew Trombley. Now’s your chance to watch them conducting four professional guest artists AND YOU, THE PUBLIC for a Messiah Sing-Along. Volunteer singers from both the Sullivan County Community Chorus and Hudson Opera Theatre Chorus will be joining in for the sing-along. “This performance will have a conductor and it will be ME! This will be my conducting debut!,” exclaimed Trombley. SCCO will perform Part I and excerpts from Part II concluding with the Hallelujah Chorus.” Soprano Savannah Greene is known for her “velvety”, “powerful” and “beautifully emotive” singing.

Alto Ema Mitrovic has thrilled local audiences with her singing and acting for Hudson Opera Theatre as Suzuki in Madama Butterfly (2019), Mercedes in Carmen (2019), Alisa in Lucia Di Lammermoor (2018), Annina in La Traviata (2018), Larina in Eugene Onegin (2016), and Siebel in Faust (2013). Handel’s music is not new to tenor Jared Goldstein who sang Handel arias for his 2010 junior recital at Ithaca College. Ellenville baritone Daniel Im is a recent graduate of the Purchase College Conservatory of Music (and is also a familiar face to Shadowland theatre-goers). Messiah premiered in Dublin in 1742 at Easter time. In fact, Messiah was always intended for Lent. It was the Victorians who moved it to Christmas, to revive interest in the then-neglected holiday. The first London performance was a disaster. The fact that a religious work was being performed in a theatre, not a church, scandalized London audiences. Handel rewrote parts of the oratorio to better meet the abilities of soloists

and the available instruments with each of the original 13 performances. Historically, Messiah has continued to change with the ensembles that perform it. Mozart re-orchestrated Messiah in 1789 and gave it a more modern sound by Classical orchestra standards. He humbly wrote that any alterations he made should not be seen as an effort at improvement. Nesin Cultural Arts (NCA) Dance Company, Honors Chorus and Honors Orchestra students will perform Mozart’s Ave verum corpus as a prelude to Messiah. So, dust off your Messiah score and join them at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 15 St. John Street, Monticello, on December 7 at 4:00pm. LMAC: Gingerbread!

The Liberty Museum and Arts Center, (LMAC) has a dual mission of presenting creative arts as well as programs of local and regional history. The museum has been honored statewide for some of its productions of local and state historic themes. From its tentative beginnings, the Museum has anchored community efforts to restore and renovate Main Street. The large front exhibition space is frequently used for concerts, lectures, conferences, social gatherings and celebrations. For the holiday season, LMAC presents The Gingerbread Experience where you can enjoy a craft show, bake sale, and the debut of the Holiday Museum Store. Screening: “The Pollinators” at Downing Our complex food system rests on the wings of the honey bee and the commercial beekeepers that move them from farm to orchard pollinating the crops that produce the food we eat. The Pollinators is a cinematic journey around the United States following migratory beekeepers and their truckloads of honey bees as they pollinate the flowers that become the fruits, nuts and vegetables we all eat. The film includes talks with farmers, scientists,

chefs, economists and academics along the way to give a broad perspective about the threats to honey bees and what it means to our food security. Music & Open House in Hurleyville: Dec 1 The Country Travelers are a classic country/bluegrass dance band whose repertoire includes square and round dance tunes, and longtime dance caller Patty Legg will actually call a dance during their show at the Sullivan County Museum on December 1 at 2:00pm. Wear your dancing shoes! Members of The Country Travelers come from Ulster and Sullivan counties. They include Patty Legg, guitar and lead vocals; Bob Hunt, banjo, guitar and vocals; Paul Lounsbury, fiddle, guitar and vocals; Dave Trestyn, bass and vocals; and Bill Angell, autoharp and hammered dulcimer. The Americana band Little Sparrow will host the event, and the concert is part of the Sullivan County Historical Society’s annual Open House and Theme Tree Exhibit. Where Are They Now? by J. A. Di Bello The well-noted ResCo (Resident Company) of the Forestburgh Playhouse flourishes under the diligent leadership of Franklin Trapp, himself a product of this esteemed group. As a theatrical training facility, the ResCo program is one of the most respected instructional venues in the nation. Patrons of the Miracle of the Forest become acquainted with individual members as they perform on the main stage and in the Tavern’s everpopular Cabaret. As might be expected, many wonder: “Where are they now?” An individual to be noted is Lauren Chapman, an alumna of Emerson College in Boston. Lauren is vividly remembered as a ResCo member of the summers of 2012 and 2013, and without question her extraordinary portrayal of Anybody’s in the

2012 production of West Side Story became something to talk about. An excerpt from The Catskill Chronicle’s stunning review reads: “...a rough and tumble character brought to life by a most competent Lauren Chapman. TIS’ THE SEASON! HOLIDAY EVENTS Dear readers - the following are just a tad of the many holiday related events happening locally this December! Be sure to check out this entire issue along with our calendars for more holiday events! Christmas House Tour, Goshen Catholic Charities of Orange, Sullivan, and Ulster will kick-off the holiday season on December 7 with the 5th annual Goshen Christmas House Tour. The Tour provides an inside look at the beautiful Christmas décor and festive finery of a selection of private homes in the greater Goshen area. Homes will be open to ticketed visitors from 1:00pm-5:00pm for self-guided tours. All proceeds from the Tour support Catholic Charities’ social safety net programs, which aid the neediest residents of Orange, Sullivan, and Ulster Counties. Check-in and day-of ticket sales for the Tour will open at noon at the Harness Racing Museum and Hall of Fame, 240 Main Street, Goshen. At check-in, guests will receive their map, guidebook, and guest pass. Live Christmas music, refreshments, and restroom facilities will also be available at check-in. For the past three decades, supporters from all over have joined the Newburgh Historical Society in celebrating a treasured architectural history during the annual Candlelight Tour. The self-guided tour will take place on December 8, from Noon-5:00pm. The Society’s headquarters at the 1830 Captain David Crawford House (pictured) located at 189 Montgomery Street, is the starting place for the Tour. The house tour features a diverse assortment of public and private spaces within and beyond the City of Newburgh’s East End Historic District. These include city and suburban houses, homes in the rehabilitation process and some of Newburgh’s most important landmarks. The Crawford House will be decked out in natural greens and floral arrangements, with

wreaths and trees, and period decorations typical of the 19th century. “It is a labor of love by the volunteers of the Historical Society to create such a splendid exhibition of natural beauty with garlands and bows, decorative fruits and candies that dazzle the eyes of visitors year after year,” said planning committee member Warren Cahill. Holiday Reading & House Tour, Milford Professional actors Joe and Therese Plummer of New York City stepped in to perform the 39th annual dramatization of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol at Grey Towers following more than three decades of performances by their father, Joe Plummer, Sr. No costumes or scenery are used, leaving much to one’s imagination, just as stories were told or read in the 19th century. The 1886 mansion, formerly the home

of Gov. Gifford Pinchot, founder and first chief of the US Forest Service, will once again be decorated by members of the Milford Garden Club. It was customary for employers to release their workers to enjoy days of leisure time, spent mostly in a state of intoxication. Heaven help the neighbors when the alcohol ran out. On December 21 from 5:00-8:00pm, assist the Ellison family to not only deal with the local rowdies but over 300 Continental artillerymen in search of liquid refreshment in this first-person presentation set during the winter of 1780-81 at Knox’s Headquarters. Free Dance: No Experience Necessary On December 4, the Hurleyville Arts Centre (HAC) will be hosting a one hour class that explores pedestrian movement as a catalyst for dance and imagination training. “We will play with time, space and sound. Starting with a simple walk as our “home base” we will then add visualizations and imagination exercises to deconstruct familiar movement patterns. The aim is to move, release stress, have fun, meet our bodies where they are, release insecurities that inhibit physical freedom of expression, dance, and PLAY!,” explained Play Guide Erin Dudley. Dudley has been a member of the New

York dance community since 1993 and is currently HAC’s Program Director. “I make dance as a practice in noticing the energetic world as created by images without possession, social logic, boundaries or definitions...I am interested in the body melting into nature and in inviting the viewer to let the consciousness rest in the moment and float in the emotionless multitude of opposites somewhere between dream and reality. Black Dirt: For Kids, Teens & Adults Holiday Readaloud Attentive listeners grades K and up are invited to hear favorite seasonal stories read aloud by members of the board of trustees, staff and the Florida Library’s Black Dirt Storytelling Guild. The Thrilling Days of Yesteryear by J. A. Di Bello

It may have been in the late fall or perhaps even early winter; my memories of those days handicapped by time. There is, though, the thought of a warm, improbable glow that lingers. It seemed the only light in the whole living room of our cozy Cape Cod bungalow. Because of the continuing, invasive darkness of evening, the glow became appealing and honestly quite homeish. It was the center of attention for my mom and her mother, my grandma. That radiance was so important at the time, one didn’t dare but utter even the softest of whispers. And so it was each evening: a snug, reassuring glow brought news of the war into our home. Attentive, we listened with religious intensity to our Philco console radio. It was Communion at high mass. Yes, that miracle was radio; Edison’s vacuum tube delivered the world indoors, into our home, samples of variety, music, adventure, and drama, a multi-package deal. The family, again whole, moved from that petite Cape Cod to a larger domain, one capable of accommodating four additional children and a grandma. Then, one shiny, simmering summer morning, absent notice or fanfare, a teeny, tiny, bitty 12-inch television set arrived. It sat dwarfed, next to our faithful mahogany Philco console. Its arrival was by

a not-so-curious circumstance, the direct, unadulterated result of the Gillette Safety Razor Company’s Cavalcade of Sports and its accompanying ritual of Fridaynight fights from the Garden. The event instantly transformed our center-of-attention console radio into a relic, an unworthy, mahogany antique. To the contrary for this writer. The outcome became a gift from the Almighty, as the mighty console was unceremoniously moved from its commanding location to the third floor of an unheated attic in a spacious house securely positioned atop a modest hill. That faithful, “relic” now the glow that would bring a far-away world into the bedroom of this writer. It was the early to mid-fifties of an everlasting decade. The loyal Philco was capable of multiple wonders, including foreign broadcasts, shortwave and on late summer nights, AM broadcast from remote areas of the world and even English language broadcasts from Radio Moscow, as the volume was discreetly lowered for without doubt the reception was subversive and likely illegal. AM radio on late summer nights was crowded with the sizzle and snap of distant lightning. Nevertheless, crackling through a 12-inch mahogany enclosed speaker, came

the unique sounds of an innovative R&B, Harlem-based DJ: Jocko “on the scene with the record machine.” 1280 at the top of the AM dial. Yes, but there was also insomnia or early-to-rise summer employment, during those pre-air times, that delivered a whole, previously unknown dimension. The Milkman’s Matinee, midnight to 5 a.m., WNEW-AM with Jack Lazare cultivated, quite effectively, a fresh appreciation with guests and music that included Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, and Frank Sinatra, et al. Most memorable, too, were the early comedies, mystery theatres and variety shows, where personalities governed. Arthur Godfrey, CBS, was once called “the Huck Finn of radio,” with his ukulele, boyish charm and the unforgettable Hawaiian charmer Haleloke and of course Julius LaRosa, controversy included. Further along that list is Art Linkletter’s House Party, also of CBS, with his Kids Say the Darndest Things. Unforgettable too, on those hot and humid summer nights, was the voice of Vin Scully and the flavor of Ebbets Field, Brooklyn, 1955. But to engage further in the initial invitation, “The Thrilling Days Of Yesteryear - Via the Internet.” Radio drama, mystery, variety, dated and new are thriving and expanding as we read. Archives of dated productions exist in a myriad of collections on the internet. See CBS Mystery Theatre, or Prairie Home Companion, (1980 through 2017) with Garrison Keillor, a collection numbering in the hundreds of 2-hour variety and entertainment. Accompanying the nostalgia associated with the above is new drama, commentary

and essential storytelling. One need only to Google around a bit to discover a wealth of dedicated internet sites, delivering “podcasts.” One of particular interest and quite unique is a WQXR podcast, Aria Code. It is of special interest to opera fans and especially those at the introductory level. It begins a new season in conjunction with The Metropolitan Opera with a series of programs linked by “the nature of Desire,” as found in arias from the Met’s current season. And how’s this for starters: Dame Judi Dench and soprano Anna Netrebko discuss their roles as Lady Macbeth. For a tinge of reality mingled with thoughts of nostalgia, nearby adventures are to be found at Shadowland Stages in Ellenville, where those thrilling days of yesterday are. In November, Shadowland hosted a legendary evening of live radio, enthusiastically presented by Ray Faiola of Chelsea Rialto. It was a double-bill evening with 2 vintage radio edge-of-yourseat thrillers, performed on stage, Valse Triste and Execution. For those with a lingering thirst, few will neglect an evening of Americana with George Bailey and his familiar community of Bedford Falls. It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play - adapted by Joe Landry is on stage at Shadowland Stages, 155 Canal Street, Ellenville, from December 6-22. For tickets: 845-647-5511. Following an extenuated absence from the house on the hill, the faithful glow of the mahogany Philco radio was no longer to be found. In recent years, however, a reliable substitute became available. A distant craftsman had meticulously restored a 1942 Zenith console radio to show-room condition (albeit without vacuum tubes). Not one to take disappointment easily, a series of Bose bluetooth speakers were inserted, with designed acoustical advantage in the restored cabinet. By early the next evening, with visitors remarking on the superior sound quality of ancient mahogany radios, it was once again the Thrilling Days of Yesteryear Via the Internet.

Big and Small will feature a collection of artworks that contrast in size. The intention of this exhibit is to highlight “Pop-Up” Oil on canvas by John Slivjak the impact of scale and how it can affect our visual perception of an artwork. An intricately complex drawing of a scaled fish is very impressive when drawn on a small scale, perhaps an 8 inch piece of paper, but that

complex detail becomes less stunning if its drawn at a size of six feet! Alternatively, a simple subject may appear mundane in a small artwork, but that same simplistic subject can have a profound visual impact at a large scale. This exhibit was juried by the arts outreach committee of the Orange County Arts Council. The Council’s many committees are vital to the community, and are dedicated to serving different types of artists with a wide range of assistance and opportunities. HV Plein Air Fest Works Head to Rock Tavern The plein air painting method contrasts with studio painting or academic rules that might create a predetermined look. Artists have long painted outdoors, but in the mid-19th century, working in natural light became particularly important to the Barbizon School, Hudson River School, and Impressionists. The Hudson Valley Plein Air Festival is the brainchild of the Wallkill River School.

“A Christmas Carol” in Warwick Looking for something different this holiday season? Here’s an opportunity to bring your whole family to enjoy an entertaining and highly energetic holiday classic! Doris Baizley’s inventive stage adaptation of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is told by a ragtag troupe of traveling players made up of actors, puppets, clowns and mimes. “The Story of Christmas in Classic Art” Everyone is invited to share in a free holiday celebration that includes refreshments, art, music, and hot chocolate! The Barryville Area Arts Association is celebrating all holiday traditions with two themed displays of classic art and a show of work by local artists. The Story of Christmas in Classic Art includes ten classic prints, from the angel’s announcement to Mary that she would give birth (The Annunciation by Fra Angelico, c. 1440), through the trip back home and hiding the Baby from the murderous King Herod (Rest on Flight Through Egypt by Orazio Gentileschi, 1626). Creation Stories from Around the World includes art representations of ten different creation stories associated with major, obscure, and extinct religions. “According to some Chinese creation stories,” explains event coordinator Nick Roes, “the universe began as a big, black, cosmic egg. Studying with Gayle Clark Fedigan and Cynthia Harris-Pagano, she now studies oils with Andrew Lattimore. Deborah Greco works in oil and pastel. “As a landscape artist, my intent is to share how I experience the environment I live in. The shoreline is my muse. Often my inspiration comes from my early evening walks along the beach just before the sun sets. Twilight is my most favorite and contemplative time of day and is a recurring subject in many of my paintings.” Jacqueline O’Malley-Satz states, “As a plein air artist, I have often found the subject of water to be inspiring. A Tale of Two Neighbors: When Two Music Masters Meet at Home by Lisa Gonsalves I work at Rafter’s Tavern in Callicoon, which opened early this year with a focus on music, something more than cover-tunes. A few months past we were fortunate to host, for the first time, The Hal Galper Trio. The legendary Hal Galper happens to be a resident of the neighboring town of Cochecton. Co-founder of the New School of Contemporary Jazz in NYC, where he still teaches today, we were honored that our humble venue was suitable for his regular booking, now weekly on Sundays. Aware the owners had no advertising budget to speak of at this fledgling venue, I designed a networking strategy of all the jazz friends I could think of to promote this musical delicacy. Thurman Barker and his wife Lucette Barker came to mind, as I had worked at the local diner in Jeffersonville where they had been my customers. I had seen Thurman perform before, instantly a fan of this extraordinary percussionist and drummer, but now I was simply collecting neighbors I knew would appreciate the show. No sooner had I put this on my list, did Lucette show up with friends to see the trio. When I encouraged her to bring Thurman next time, she promised she’d try, but Sunday evenings were difficult being a “school

night” for him. His two-hour commute Monday mornings to Bard College where he taught, was as early as it was long. The following Sunday Thurman joined Lucette as typical patrons. At the end of the evening I noticed Lucette and Lillian, lovely wife of Hal Galper, chatting together. Overhearing one say, “Oh! He would love that!”, I couldn’t help consider, “Could something musically magical be taking place here? Or, are they just making dinner plans?” Hal had not been satisfied with his rhythm section, and I had served dinner to a different drummer each week. Although the next Sunday seemed typical, when I approached the band to take their orders, behind the drums sat Thurman Barker! “No way!” I exclaimed and we both laughed as he said, “You started this!” Feeling both honored and humble, I share due credit with Lucette, who brought him in. Here we have two master musicians with plenty in common. Both world-renowned, both professors of music for over 25 years at respected regional New York colleges, and both have lived in close proximity for over 30 years, separated by a single village between them. What’s curious is they were not musical peers or friends moving in the same circles, as one might imagine in a relatively small jazz world, or a place where

three villages count as a single neighborhood. Not until now. Never too late for a happy happenstance. A few weeks in, and the trio is outstanding! They are sincerely more than the sum of parts. Music & Merriment in Maybrook The Maybrook Symphonic Wind Ensemble’s 6th annual holiday concert, Music and Merriment, will highlight the Dance of the Knights from the ballet Romeo and Juliet. Prokofiev composed most of his music for Romeo and Juliet during the summer of 1935, and Leroy Anderson (1908-1975) the ballet premiered in Brno, Czechoslovakia, on December 30, 1938. The Dance of the Knights has whimsical yet ominous strains that portend the illfated love of Romeo and Juliet. Along with holiday Steve Reisteter classics like Leroy Anderson’s A Christmas Festival and Albert Hague’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas, the program will feature a Hanukkah tribute, Eighth Candle arranged by Steve Reisteter. A Christmas Festival is made up of eight traditional Christmas carols arranged in a very attractive medley by renown composer Leroy Anderson. Albert Hague was a successful Broadway

composer (Plain and Fancy with Barbara Cook: 1955, Redhead with Gwen Verdon & Richard Kiley: 1959), who spent his later years as a film and TV actor (Benjamin Shorofsky in Fame). Steve Reisteter is a bearded, blue-eyed clarinetist who is often singled out Albert Hague for a solo bow during (1920-2001) concerts of the Allentown, PA Band. Even though he is a virtuoso performer on his instrument and a frequent soloist, Reisteter is also often recognized for his arrangements and orchestrations. “Lorca Eats Bullets” at SUNY Sullivan Lorca Eats Bullets by Nick López is a mad-cap new play juxtaposing the trials of war through the lens of the young adults conscripted to fight the Battle of Stalingrad and the Vietnam War. The play deals with antiwar themes and focuses on a team of Russian female snipers as they journey through battles with the Wehrmacht, giant Hitler and Stalin monsters and Baby Messerschmitts.
