Aromatherapy on Route 300 New York Project Hope is a statewide crisis counseling program designed to help New Yorkers navigate the changes caused by Covid-19. The program helps New Yorkers Debbie Lewis-Vann understand their reactions and emotions during COVID19. Through an emotional support helpline, educational materials, and trusted referrals, NY Project Hope helps people manage and cope with changes brought on by Covid-19. Independent Living, Inc. is a local provider agency of NY Project Hope, a program of the Office of Mental Health, and is funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Since 1987, Independent Living, Inc. has served as a common voice for persons with disabilities living in our community. “I work for Independent Living as a Crisis Counselor,” Debbie LewisVann told CANVAS. “There are several emotional support works we do within the community - as an example the upcoming Aromatherapy workshop at the Newburgh Library. When inhaled, the scent molecules in essential oils travel from the olfactory nerves directly to the brain and especially impact the amygdala, the emotional center of the brain. Essential oils can also be absorbed by the skin. Aromatherapy uses aromatic essential oils medicinally to improve the health of the body, mind, and spirit. It enhances both physical and emotional health. Debbie will be joined by Katherine Hendrickson to present Aromatherapy with NY Project Hope on December 2 at 11:00am in the Newburgh Library Town Branch, 1401 Route 300. Admission is free. Enjoy a World of Pastels in Newburgh Artists Cathy Cahill, Judy Byrne, Cathy Prager, and Lily Norton, all from the Newburgh area, have watched each other develop new techniques and approaches by painting and taking classes together, providing support, confidence, and, most of all, fun! “Constitution Marsh, Spring” by Cathy Prager Known as the 4 Pastelists, they have shown their work together and separately at many local venues, often winning individual honors and awards at various area art shows. Studying art history and film and working in the theater, Cathy Prager observed how many different artists harnessed chaos. She says pastels are “solid and ephemeral at the same time, like nature”, leading to an ever-evolving “Rocky Stream” by Lily Norton quest for a unique vision. Master gardner and floral designer Lily Norton looks to the natural world for her subjects. The joy of being outdoors inspires her to paint a scene and allow the viewer to experience that same joy. Cathy Cahill learned to see nature through an artist’s eye as the daughter of photographer Ralph Aiello. She taught math for 35 years, and was introduced to pastels in retirement. Judy Byrne taught art and elementary education in the Newburgh School District for 25 years. She has now “Brittany Path” by Cathy Cahill returned to her love of painting and drawing both landscape and still life. A selection of landscapes, still lifes and other subjects by this local “school” of artists are available for viewing (and purchase - the holidays are upon us!) at 2Alices Coffee Lounge, 117 Broadway, Newburgh, through February 6. Take a friend and head to the lounge for a cup of Joe and some local art! For info: Events@2alicescoffee.com

In Memoriam: “The arts make us better people, and having a place to commune and enjoy the arts together with others is almost a spiritual experience.” - Tony Falco / The Falcon Tony Falco died on October 28, 2021, after a six-month battle with complications from Covid-19. A man with many passions and skills, a loving husband and father, and an engaged community leader, Tony is perhaps best known as the owner of The Falcon, the innovative music venue he founded in the early 2000s in Marlboro. The Falcon became a mecca for jazz musicians and one of the Hudson Valley’s most prominent and diverse music clubs as well as its most beautiful. Tony imagined the Falcon as a community-focused, multi-art, and musician-centric institution. At its prepandemic peak, the Falcon featured music on two stages nightly, rotating art exhibits, the Avalon Archives Museum of Rock & Roll, two restaurants, and a network of trails and decks overlooking Marlboro Falls. Tony graduated from New Paltz with a degree in Environmental Science. Over his scientific career, he owned and operated several water treatment facilities throughout the Hudson Valley as well as Environmental Labworks, a water testing facility located in the same building as The Falcon. Tony was a renaissance man: artist, entrepreneur, scientist, engineer, architect, pilot, and environmental conservationist. He was generous and adventurous, and he loved to travel the world. In 2020, during the pandemic, he designed and built the Marlboro Nature Trail. He recently took up horseback riding and owned two horses, Houdini and Cinch. Donations may be made in memory of Tony Falco to Amnesty International. If Tony had special powers, at all, it was foresight. He knew that urban dwellers would relocate, and support the need for quality music performances and visual art. Just as importantly, his water testing and analysis lab under The Falcon Underground (The pub-beneath-theclub), Environmental Labworks, remains one of the most reliable labs of its kind in the region, for numerous municipalities and homeowners. His son, Julian Falco is now part of the operation after graduating with a degree in Environmental Science. The Lab’s success allowed Tony
Tony Falco
to expand upon his ideas concerning many environments, to include the quality and accessibility of our green spaces, arts and culture. One of his greatest gifts was the construction of the Marlboro Nature Trail, built during the pandemic lockdown, with his sons Lee and Julian, among others. Tony never wavered from his personal standard of kindness and generosity. Staff members were told, “It’s all about The Vibe”, and instructed to treat patrons and performers with kindness, respect, and generosity. Tony’s place at the club was, more often than not, in the sound booth at work, and often receiving visitors, as well. He made himself available for musicians’ loadin, set-up, and soundcheck. Family vacations were important to him, and he was away when he traveled with his wife, Julie, their children, and later, the children’s partners. Where food was concerned, in the early days he experienced a kind of global fame for not only providing lodgings in the family home for visiting musicians, but for serving up giant paellas to them before each show. Later at the current location, he was happy when the chefs created innovative new entrees for the menu. Sadly, short staffing and short performance weeks have changed The Falcon’s menus since. Tony’s words: “Booking is a bear.” Following tour schedules and finding dates for performances always led us down a path of question marks, changes to agreements, and perpetual email searches to find the last and definitive correspondence. Tony had beaten cancer but was left
(1956 - 2021)
without an immune system. (Vaccines work with immune systems). He had been struggling with pneumonia since April. - Fern Franke, Falcon Promotions I’m honored to write you something about Tony. I have a plethora of stories and anecdotes. Tony’s passing has hit a lot of us very hard. I myself am finding it to be a profound loss. We’ve known the Falcos for 21+ years; our kids played together. The things I most remember about Tony Falco and his wonderful family were the house concerts in what came to be known as “the Building”, behind their family home in Marlboro, and their extraordinary hospitality. As one of - if not THE, as some people assure me - first acts to perform there (a jazz trio comprised of bassist Robert Kopec, drummer Marvin Bu-ga-lu Smith and myself), my wife Nita and I went to concert after wonderful concert - always potluck affairs with food overflowing, kids running about and so many wonderful people. I performed there many times, with a wide variety of groups including my group NAIL. When NAIL played in 2005, a young Lee Falco, age 8, sat in with us on drums. Before every performance Julie Falco would make a meal for the performers and the family, and we’d all sit in the house and swap stories. At some point Tony acquired his first piano, and soon after I performed my arrangement of the “Rite Of Spring”. During the performance a bat flew out of the rafters and circled the stage! With my head buried in the piano keys I didn’t
notice it but after the show Tony said excitedly “Did you see the bat?” He had a gleam in his eye and was genuinely excited by the whole thing, reminiscing about it for years afterwards. Eventually concerts in the building got to be “standing room only” at every show. We could no longer attend regularly and we didn’t need to. It was out of this scene that Tony got the idea to create a real full size working venue, and that’s The Falcon as we know it today. At the heart of it all is the “Magic Blue Box” - the donation box, still in use today at the Falcon. Tony never charged a cover - everything was donation based. It didn’t matter if you didn’t have a dime to your name - you could still come enjoy the music. No one was turned away. Every time I performed there I made more money than expected - EVERY time and so did everyone else I talked to. The Falcon is a living testament to Tony Falco’s unrelenting vision and support for living artists. - Neil “Nail” Alexander I met Tony Falco years ago when he started an art center in his barn behind the family home, motivated by his young son Lee’s love of playing drums with his friends. He transformed the upper floor into a space that exhibited artwork, presented a “kids band” and then an “adult musicians” group where he welcomed all kinds of music, nurturing creative ideas and audiences alike. (I brought a music & dance ensemble there with an African drummer). Tony’s vision for the present Falcon was realized with re-purposed lumber from a town building set to be demolished and he created a space there to continue developing his warm sense of community in the Hudson Valley. His palpable Love of Life radiated from his gentle smile. I will miss him, as will so many others! - Judi Silvano Tony Falco was a friend, a visionary, an architect and an entrepreneur with a passion to contribute to the well-being of others in his family, community and beyond. If everyone would follow his example of giving, this world would be a better place. The opportunities he gave all of us to express ourselves in the creative arts was always with love and desire. He was inspired and his inspiration will live on in what he created at The Falcon for generations. I will miss him dearly. - Joe Lovano

Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop “It’s that time of year again as our thoughts turn to colder weather, and of course the holidays. Here at the Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop (SCDW) our thoughts also turn to our favorite place: the Rivoli Theatre. The SCDW owns and operates the Rivoli, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. With parts of the theatre built in the 1920’s, this nearly century old building needs lots of work. “Help us get the money needed to make repairs and upgrades and get some of your holiday shopping done at the same time. The annual NYS Lottery Raffle is back! For $10 you get a raffle ticket with a three-digit number on it. If that number is chosen as the NYS Evening Lottery Pick during January, 2022, you win cash! You get 31 chances to win.

“But what if your number never comes up? YOU WIN ANYWAY! You already won when you bought the ticket! Your ticket, whether it wins cash or not, is a free admission to any 2022 production (or $10 off the cost of a ticket for our annual musical: The Little Mermaid). “Email haroldtighe50@gmail.com with your name, address and phone number and Harold will send you a ticket and a pre-stamped envelope to send back your check (checks must be postmarked no later than December 31, 2021 for your ticket to be eligible to win starting January 1. But, things being what they are, our hat is well-worn from getting passed around year after year. The good news is that our audience always steps up, always shows their love for chamber music and for the Weekend of Chamber Music community, and
helps us make each festival better than the last. “So, here we are again, ready to blow your minds with next summer’s program. Last year we went Into the Light, and in 2022 we bypass the “new normal” and head straight to The New FANTASTIC! With early works from Bach, Brahms, Sibelius, Stravinsky, and Composer-inResidence Hannah Kendall (pictured), 2022 will be fantastic in every way. Help us keep the music playing with a taxdeductible gift. Gingerbread Celebration in Liberty The Liberty Museum & Arts Center building was first constructed as a hotel in 1894. The hotel closed in 1936. After the closing of the hotel, the property was a large hardware store. Katz’s Bake shop was the next business to take over the building until 1989. The building was acquired by the Liberty Chamber of Commerce in 1995 as part of the redevelopment plan for Main Street, and as a home for a museum and arts center. The Center has been collecting and exhibiting items of historical interest, as well as promoting educational activities such as art classes, lectures, cultural programs, and programs designed for children. Gingerbread refers to a broad category of baked goods, typically flavored with ginger, cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon and sweetened with honey, sugar or molasses. Gingerbread foods vary, ranging from a soft, moist loaf cake to something close to a ginger snap. Gingerbread is claimed to have been brought to Europe in 992 CE by the
Armenian monk Gregory of Nicopolis. Since the 13th century, Toruń gingerbread was made in Poland. It gained fame when it was brought to Sweden by German immigrants. Early references show that Swedish nuns baked gingerbread to ease indigestion in 1444. It was the custom to bake white biscuits and paint them as window decorations. In England, gingerbread was also thought to have medicinal properties. Gingerbread came to the Americas with settlers from Europe. Molasses, which was less expensive than sugar, soon became a common ingredient and produced a softer cake. The Museum will celebrate the holiday season with a bake sale, gingerbread house exhibit, and more with Gingerbread Experience on December 11, from Noon-4:00pm, followed by the Museum’s 25th annual Holiday Party at 5:00pm at 46 S. Main Street, Liberty. Call 845-292-2394 for more info. COVID protocols remain in effect. See ad on page 16.

“Back to Bach” via Zoom Back to Bach is an exploration of the master of modern music. Even though he lived hundreds of years ago, Bach wrote the book, both literally and figuratively, on what makes music ‘tick’. The forms, harmonies and progressions we use today were outlined by him more than 300 years ago. His influence is everywhere. Barry Wiesenfeld makes Bach’s amazing complexity understandable with an ear-opening lecture exploring his musical world, his style, some of his great works, and his legacy. Wiesenfeld is an internationally
recognized musician (mostly jazz), lecturer, and teacher at Ramapo College and SUNY. He has performed with Grammy winners, toured on three continents, and appeared on radio and TV. His prolific lecture series is a labor of love and his passion for his topics is contagious, be they classical, jazz or the Beatles. This free program on December 6 at 6:00pm will be presented by the E. B. Crawford Public Library on Zoom. Registration is required and is limited. Visit ebcpl.org, hover over ‘Events’ and click Adult Calendar to register.
Master Sculptor Exhibits in Rock Tavern You probably know what goes into creating a sculpture - carving, modeling, castings, construction. But what life forces help create a sculptor? A decades long journey through engineering and art schools, travel and study through Italy, teaching at the college level, painting, designing, sculpting and creating an art handling business in an old pickle factory in Brooklyn were some of the building blocks of internationally renowned sculptor Eric Stein’s career. You can find his works - both monumental and small - in galleries, shows and parks throughout the U.S. And, in December, you can view some of his creations at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Rock Tavern. Stein’s journeys through the worlds of art, academia and business have taken him to Europe, Chicago, Ohio, Buffalo, New York City and other locales. He eventually settled in the Orange County hamlet of Huguenot where he now works
predominantly on large, fabricated steel pieces in his spacious studio. “My work is about and derived from energy,” Stein writes. “An expected or present explosion or an interpretation of an idea and occasionally a historic event. My sculpture generally grows from a specific point of interest and pushes me to expand upon first reactions and dig deeper into getting the viewer to stop and rethink either their position or understanding. Being in the moment to allow for one’s own explorations and reactions to happen. My sculpture may take a single idea, sometimes referenced in the title and freeze it for further consideration.” The public is invited to the opening reception on December 11 from noon3:00pm. After that, the gallery will be open by appointment on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays by calling Mike Landrum at 845-851-6024. The UUCRT is located at 9 Vance Road in the New Windsor hamlet of Rock Tavern.
May I Have A Word With You...
Quips, Quotes & Quiddities with Carol Pozefsky First Inaugural April 30, 1789 was a Thursday. George Washington stood on the second floor balcony of Federal Hall in New York City and, according to Pennsylvania Senator William Maclay, Washington trembled, as he spoke. “I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will, to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” Clearly, the new president was overcome by the significance of the event. Maclay observed, “This great man was agitated and embarrassed more than he ever was by the leveled Cannon or pointed Musket.” Lipograms If you can form sentences omitting a particular letter, you’ve created a lipogram. For instance, can you omit the letter ‘e’? I doubt that you can. Omitting
it is like making muffins without corn starch, dozing without a pillow, riding on a train without tracks or sailing to Lithuania without a boat. I have another! His coat was dirty but his shirt was not! Glory August Saint Gaudens was the sculptor of the Robert Gould Shaw monument (pictured) that stands on the Boston Common. Shaw was the white Civil War commander of the 54th Massachusetts, the first all black infantry regiment in the northeast. The inscription, by Harvard President Charles W. Eliot, reads in part: “The black rank and file volunteered when disaster clouded the Union cause, served without pay for 18 months...faced threatened enslavement if captured, were brave in action, patient under heavy and dangerous labors and cheerful under hardships and privations.” On July 18, 1863, Colonel Shaw and 272 of his troops were killed in the Second Battle of Fort Wagner near Charleston, South Carolina. Shaw was 25 years old.

Dye Your Own Gift in Goshen Spend an afternoon with colorist Audrey Louise Reynolds at Goshen Green Farm to create a unique gift with natural eco-friendly paints and dyes. Dubbed the fashion worlds artisanal dyer by the NY Times, Reynolds uses right and left-brained instincts to create her dyes. “All-natural ingredients, foraged and sourced from daily life, travels, and unexpected encounters.” Everything from minerals, seaweed, squid ink, coral, shells, plankton, flowers, earth, can find its way into her boiling pot. It’s a science-based hypothesis that leads to trial and error experimentation,
give and take, adding and extracting, cooking, recording and sweating, to make these dyes and perfect these techniques. You are also invited to give new life to an old natural fiber garment i.e. dingy cotton t-shirt, stained white silk blouse, by overdyeing for an additional fee. The workshop will be held on December 11 from Noon-4:00pm at the Goshen Green Farm Holiday Bazaar, 3317 Route 207, and will include materials, lunch, hot tea, and gift making by the fire. Space is limited. To register: www.goshengreenfarm.com.
