Dawn Ansbro
Claudia Cummings
by Barry Plaxen I herewith wish to offer my sincerest congratulations to a CANVAS friend and supporter, Dawn Ansbro, who recently became the new Executive Director of the Orange County Arts Council (OCAC). Dawn spent six years as the Director of Organizational Development for the Lycian Centre for the Performing Arts in Sugar Loaf where she was responsible for cocreating and promoting a variety of projects including the On The Lawn outdoor summer concert series and the On The Wharf theatre productions. Most recently, Dawn worked with the Bon Secours Charity Health System in Port Jervis. Dawn will be working on upcoming OCAC events including a collaboration with the Wallkill River School on the first Orange County Arts Golf Outing and Plein Air Paint Out at Winding Hills Golf Club in Montgomery on August 20, the Orange County South Open Studio Tour on October 22 and 23, and the Annual Orange County Art Awards held at the Harness Racing Museum on November 10th. As a member of the OCAC, I look forward to assisting Dawn with her projects. As a passionate friend of all the arts and of Orange County, Dawn’s extensive knowledge and experience (she was also instrumental in the creation of the OCAC) can only result in bringing together and benefiting all segments of our vibrant community, Arts, Education, Business, and the Public. Though Claudia Cummings of Opera Company of the Highlands has often been seen performing locally, most. if not all, of us had never seen her perform “live” in an opera during her “heyday” at New York City Opera and other major operatic venues. For years we have mentioned to each other, and to her, this “loss”, wishing “we had known” and gone to watch her perform in the 70s and 80s. On June 13 two full houses of Claudia

fans (at Downing Film Center in Newburgh) were enthralled while viewing scenes from a 1983 live PBS showing of Claudia in scenes from Lucia Di Lammermoor. This was truly worth waiting for - a remarkably charismatic star performance that, because of her age at the time, added a youthfulness to the teenage Lucia that most mature divas do not portray. Claudia’s superb acting and glorious vocal technique, with beautifully executed coloratura passages, were well worth the anticipation of seeing her in an opera “live”. Thank you, Claudia. Now we know what you know about your glorious career and can share that with you always.
Similarly, at Shadowland Theatre in Ellenville, Brendan Burke beautifully directed a remarkable cast of five world class actors in The Seafarer. One of them blew me away with his craft. I was quite mesmerized with David Mason’s characterization as he was nothing like he was in previous roles at Shadowland that I have witnessed. He brilliantly executed incredible physical expressions of an unsavory character, with nervous leg shaking, an intense involvement in everything everyone else on the stage did, his expressive and, when necessary, understated reactions, his walk, sitting positions, arm movements, the way he handled a glass and a bottle, all of it allowing me to feel exactly everything he felt. Another great treat!

At Forestburgh Playhouse TV icon Loretta Swit gave a magnificent solo performance in Shirley Valentine. Swit knew the wonders of the script, how to get laughs and entertain whether her lines were funny or profound, knew what physical mannerisms to use, and had musical and multi-varied vocal rhythms. Her subtle expression of the play's inherent depths deeply stirred my emotions. She and director Ron Nash had the production perfectly paced. What a treat!

Recently, the Temple Hill Academy Players performed for their fellow students and teachers. According to Temple Hill Academy teacher Fran Weller, Groovin' to the Music...Rockin' Through Time, was a musical performance based on historical people, events, and music from years past. Weller wrote the play along with the help of colleague Barbara Lisp. "I wanted to incorporate the talent we have here at Temple Hill Academy. The play starts in the 1920-30's era and progresses through to modern day," explained Weller. The cast included 58 students ranging from fourth grade through eighth grade. Weller explained that the performance would not have been possible without the dedication of the Temple Hill Academy students and the assistance of her colleagues who volunteered their time to help with the production.

A Deadly Good Time
The Young.................................and the Restless
The Playhouse at Museum Village continues its 16th season with Knock ‘Em Dead, a “You-Solve It” mystery-comedy. This unique comedy/murder mystery is an unabashed brew of mirth and murderous mayhem. All hell breaks loose and the laughs fly when five outrageous contestants show up at Vinnie's Belly Laugh Club for the final talent competition. A ventriloquist with moving lips, a foul mouthed stand-up comedian, a baton twirling bimbo, the flamboyant owner of a lip synching poodle, a chanteuse with a questionable accent and a hypnotist with a twitch. When Vinnie turns up dead, they're all suspects and the audience has the time of its life grilling them and fingering the murderer. The production is under the direction of Michael Frohnhoefer and stage managed by Jen Mille. Performances run from July 8 thru 24 at Museum Village on Route 17M in Monroe. Tickets include dessert at intermission consisting of apple pie, ice cream, iced tea and coffee. For more information, call the box office at (845) 294-9465.

Ensemble ACJW is the performing arm of The Academy—a program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and the Weill Music Institute in partnership with the New York City Department of Education. Ensemble ACJW performs at Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and other venues in New York City and New York State, including an annual residency at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs. The ensemble comes together in different sizes, having the opportunity to play intimate chamber music as well as larger, conducted chamber orchestra works. At Pacem in Terris, site of the Frederick Franck Sculpture Garden in Warwick, ACJW member Owen Dalby returns once again to perform, this time with Meena Bhasin, viola; Saeunn Thorsteinsdottir, cello and James Austin Smith, oboe. Besides selections by Schubert and Ravel, the ensemble will perform the popular Mozart Quartet for Oboe and Strings in F major, K. 370 and the rarely played Phantasy Quartet for Oboe and Strings, Op. 2 by Benjamin Britten. The July 24 concert begins at 5:00pm. Arrive early to ensure a seat for this popular music venue, and visit the Sculpture Garden. Franck’s paintings and books are also on display in the two indoor galleries. For more information visit frederickfranck.org.

One dictionary defines “restless” as: offering no physical or emotional rest; involving constant activity or motion. That can certainly describe the Weekend of Chamber Music (WCM) ensemble during its annual July Festival. These world class musicians are presenting From Classic to Cool, beginning on July 10 and ending on July 24, moving from Jeffersonville to North Branch to Monticello. Their constant activity involves playing the music of Ravel, Brahms, Mozart, a world premiere of a work by Andrew Waggoner, a tribute to our recently “transitioned” local world class composer Lee Hoiby (who is sorely missed by many), and offering free open rehearsals, informal afternoon concerts, pre-concert talks and a Gala Grand Finale, “plus more,” the brochure reads. Once again, WCM Artistic Director Judith Pearce has assembled an ensemble of musicians that never skimps on their physical efforts to communicate their deeply emotional commitment to great music. WCM is also celebrating the 10th anniversary of its Summer Intern Scholarship Project at the newly opened Nesin Theater in Monticello, adding a new location to its Sullivan County venues. For the complete schedule of this fine ensemble’s programs, see the ad on page 12 or visit WeekendofChamberMusic.org.
Towns of Cornwall & Woodbury Art News Sponsored by Hudson Street Cafe, Cornwall-on-Hudson There’s a new artist in the Sweet Clover Gallery at Palaia Vineyards in Highland Mills, July 2 thru 30. Nancy Michael is a 86 year old watercolor artist from Vestal, NY “She’s quite good,” said Palaia owner Jan Palaggi. “She just happens to be my mother, too”. Nancy has shown mostly in the Binghamton area at different galleries, Barnes and Noble, banks and hospitals as well as the Sterling Gallery at the Opera school in Johnson City. “At 86 she is still painting up a storm as well as taking square
dance classes, is in a ballroom dancing group, painting group, bridge group, book group, singing group, and just gave up her quilting group. (No time) She’s a pip.” In addition to the art exhibit and the regular musical gigs, Palaggi is producing the hysterically funny Ken Ludwig farce, Lend Me A Tenor, with the Vineyard Comedy Players Troup, directed by Rich Aufiero, July 14-17 and a Neil Young Tribute Festival on July 23 & 24 benefitting “Uniting Against Lung Cancer”. Meet Rozz & Bernie Hoffman
Rozz & Bernie Hoffman
"Unlocking Creativity Since 1950" is the theme of the Pike County Arts and Crafts (PCAC) 61st Annual Summer Exhibition, July 13 thru July 24. The PCAC has hundreds of members, many of whom are full time working artists and crafts people. This show reflects the high caliber of their work in all genres, and it is dedicated to artists Rozz and Bernie Hoffman. The Hoffmans met at a Dude Ranch where Bernie wrangled and taught horseback riding. One of the attractions was that both were artists. Between them they have three children and four grandchildren. Rozz, born and raised on Long Island, graduated with a BFA in Fine Arts from SUNY at Stony Brook. She has been a stock broker and holds a Masters Degree as a Certified Financial Planner. Rozz considers herself an abstract realist painter. She is an acrylic painter who uses small, deliberate brush strokes and a lot of bright color on canvas. Her strokes produce an almost three-dimensional quality of texture and movement, displaying an emotional
abstract realistic presentation. In the past few years she has taken up Sumi Chinese ink painting which is specialized brush strokes using ink and Chinese watercolor paint. Bernie, born in Los Angeles and raised in New York City, has been drawing and painting since elementary school. At age 10, he was awarded a scholarship to The Little Red Schoolhouse Saturday art classes in Greenwich Village. At age 12 he received a scholarship to the Brooklyn Museum Art School. At age 13 he gained admission to the High School of Music & Art. Throughout these early years he has won many art awards and had his paintings exhibited in many NYC galleries and museums. Bernie is strictly a realistic artist specializing in portraiture. He was commissioned to paint a series of 16 Benjamin Franklin pictures that have been exhibited in every American Embassy all over the world. On Friday, July 15th the public is invited to come to the "Meet the Artists Wine and Cheese Reception" at 7:00pm in Borough Hall, 109 West Catherine Street, Milford.

Tom Holmes creates sculpture from stone, metal, wood, light, ice and water. He will be presenting new works fashioned from burnt wood, stone and steel. as well as mobiles. He will also be showing new ice photos from this year’s winter season. These large, colorful, thought-evoking and visually exciting images are made from lighted, pigmented ice that is photographed as it melts and changes. Richard Weber is literally expanding his exploration of the carved, Escher-like ceramic spheres that have thrilled art enthusiasts and collectors for years, by offering larger versions that are made of concrete and can be displayed outdoors, as well as smaller, lighter, painted spheres for indoor pedestal and hanging display. The Art of “Gastropub”................................ by J. A. Di Bello Montgomery's culinary scene is spiced with the area's finest restaurants. Located on the Wallkill River, at the intersection of the Cochecton Turnpike (Rt. 17K) and the Minisink Turnpike (Rt. 211), the area is frequently identified as the culinary capital of Orange County. A place "Where the river flows north, the pastures are lush and all the pasta's al dente." Although this writer does not even pretend to be on a first-name basis with culinary trends, the term “Gastropub” is totally unfamiliar. However, this is the term Tim Garrison, owner of Garrison's Tavern and Restaurant on Union Street, Montgomery, uses to describe his fine establishment. Investigation of the terminology is revealing. Its origins are British and originally described London "pub owners who hired chefs who could do more than fry fish and chips." Tim is a native of Montgomery and fortunately has one of those gregarious personality traits that permit him to recognize faces and the names that accompany. He has laboriously transformed what was once a delicious, unpretentious coffee and lunch café, The Daily Bean, owned by John and Marlene Wood, into a trendy, comfortable nightspot, with a legitimate neighborhood vibe. Dark cherry
A young, bright, articulate patron from the Newburgh area recently commented on Garrison's as a place for "great service and fantastic wine." Whether this is called a saloon, bar and grill or gastropub there are plenty of beverages to choose from and ample opportunity to enjoy people and a good meal.
The Art of “Gluten-y y”
Artist-owned Blazing Bagels
by J. A. Di Bello
paneling creates an atmosphere that can only embellish an evening's delight of food, beverage and companionship. For aficionados and neophytes alike, Garrison’s Tavern boasts a selection of over 40 fine wines, ranging from the Chardonnays to the Zinfandels, including numerous, tasty offerings from the Hudson Valley's burgeoning wineries. To add to an already interesting evening, over 40 imported, domestic and craft beers are available. The above blends nicely with an upscale kitchen that offers house-marinated olives, rosemary parmesan fries with lemon garlic aioli and potato & pea samosas with tamarind sauce for bar snacks.
The Town of Montgomery is comfortably settled in the Northeastern pocket of Orange County. And as is the case in many oncerural locations it is filled to the gunwales with treasured little secrets of mystery and surprise. Almost as elusive and secretive as one's loose change is a diminutive bagel shop, Blazing Bagels, located at 111 Hawkins Drive in the Shoprite Plaza, Montgomery. It's just a quick jaunt off Route 208. Upstaging all other offerings are real bagels, each kettle boiled and oven baked. "Where'd they come from?" a surprised visitor was heard to ask. The art of producing real on-the premises bagels that can be served to customers while they're are still warm from the baking oven is no piece of cake - sorry -, no walk-in-the park. Obtaining and mixing the ingredients for producing "Real Bagels" is not exactly
rocket science, but it's in range. However, as mystery frequently surrounds the kitchens of the culinary arts, much depends on knowing and applying the correct proportions with impeccable timing. One must possess a feeling for the whole process. At Blazing Bagels there are fourteen (14) types of bagels on the menu. Each made with flour high in gluten, as gluten is responsible for that chewy characteristic, so sought after by a growing number of bagel aficionados. The bagel rings are joined by hand and immersed in boiling water for just the proper amount of time necessary to seal the dough. It's the combination of water and the secret ingredients added to it that produces a shiny crust. Salt, onion, poppy seeds are added just before the newly formed bagel is introduced to the heat of the oven. Blazing Bagels is designed to be a takeout restaurant, although comfortable seating is available. It boasts of homemade soups with wraps and sandwiches made with healthy ingredients and "lots of love." Great coffee and generous portions of homemade flavored cream cheese complete the complements. Interestingly, and in-line with the multiple artistic venues which seem to be emerging in various spots on the Town of Montgomery's palette, the Blazing Bagels bagel shop is also a fledgling and expanding little art gallery. Owner, (here's the surprise!) is Lana Privitera, an award winning, accomplished watercolorist, educated at the School of Fine Arts, Zaragoza, Spain and winner of awards in the Hudson Valley. Fine art, great coffee and fresh, warmfrom-the-oven bagels bulging with generous amounts of cream cheese sounds to this writer like a comfortable, small café.

Wallkill River School July Exhibits Elizabeth Ocskay was born in Vienna, Austria to Hungarian Refugees and spent her early years on a farm in the countryside. She began drawing animals, particularly horses, as soon as she was able to hold a pencil. Her family emigrated to America when she was five and she continued to draw and also paint with oils through elementary and high school. Ocskay graduated with a BA from the College of New Rochelle and received her Masters Degree in Social Work at Fordham University. She currently works for an addiction treatment center Ocskay gave up art after college when work and commuting left little time and only returned to it in recent years. A little over a year ago, she discovered the Wallkill River School and found a love for plein air painting. She credits the school with bringing her back to her creative roots and showing her the way to combine her love of nature with art. She has been an avid outdoorswoman, was a skier, cyclist and runner for many years. She is also a longtime yoga practitioner and finds her spiritual strength there, in meditation, and in the zen of creativity. She has accepted commissions for portraits, pet portraits and cartoon/caricatures and has a particular love of painting animals. Humans relate to animals for sustenance, inspiration, courage, and companionship. By examining aspects of the animal world in nature and in relation to artists, the Outsider's Studio Collective (OSC) delves into the chasm of their own collective psyche, reflected in humans' relationships to beasts and other bodied kin. "Whether we portray them as sentient beings or as monsters of predation, cutie-pie kittens or future porterhouse steaks, humans have been creating animal talismans since the beginning of time. As artists in this show, we are very influenced by our pets and how we communicate with them. In our work, they are icons, saints, fables, metaphors, circus acts, and clinical studiesor, as Naturalist Henry Beston writes, 'fellow prisoners of the splendor and travail of the earth.'" says OSC members. Dioramas thru July 9 on Ann Street
“The Birthday Suit” by Jonah Samson
The word “diorama” can either refer to a nineteenth century mobile theatre device, or, in modern usage, a three-dimensional fullsize or miniature model, sometimes enclosed in a glass showcase for a museum. Dioramas are often built by hobbyists as part of related hobbies such as military vehicle modeling, miniature figure modeling, or aircraft modeling. As a vehicle for artistic expression, the
diorama provides contemporary artists with the perfect platform for taking into account real life conditions by deftly intertwining elements of the authentic and the imagined into constructed environments, silent captured scenes which are frozen in a moment of time. The Ann Street Gallery in Newburgh is presenting Frame of Reference: Dioramas in 21st Century through July 9. Artists featured in the exhibition are Jessica Bottalico, Darlene Charneco, Lisa Dahl, Lisa di Donato, Jennifer Hunold, Misako Inaoka, Katerina Lanfranco, Elizabeth Livingston, Jason Paradis, Margaret Roleke, Jonah Samson, Justin Shull and Rachel Vaters-Carr. Virginia Walsh is the curator. Located at 104 Ann Street, Newburgh, directly behind the Ritz Theatre. Phone: 845-784-1146.
Harriet Finck “Returns” to Orange County
New Jersey artist Harriet Finck’s oeuvre has been seen at Lycian Centre in Sugar Loaf (1997) and Port of Call in Warwick (2004). After a seven year hiatus, her colorful works can once again be seen locally, this time at the Unitarian Universalist Gallery in Rock Tavern, July 1 through August 30. “From the very beginning of my work as a collagist I have been drawn to two related ideas: putting the pieces of broken things together, and finding form within chaos. My first series, composed daily for about a year, was a group of my own destroyed etchings, reassembled. Within each, I explored the
abstract expressionist terrain of overall composition, and found order and form in the maelstrom,” Finck explains. “My medium then became painted paper collage. I began to deliberately paint on paper, solid colors, prints and nature studies, knowing that I would take them apart and reconfigure them. For subjects I chose natural forms, textiles and pure color geometries. “The private dialogue between form and formlessness is now still very much a motif in my new series. In these, though, broken pieces have morphed into myriads of calligraphic marks. There is a new attention to depth: storms rage not just across the page, but beyond the surface. Scale is also given new focus: skeins of tiny shapes are laid across fields of large, amorphous ones. These are stories about birth and death, angels and dreams, despair and redemption. An opening reception at the UUC, 9 Vance Road (off of Route 207) will take place on July 17, from 1:00pm to 4:00pm.
A Multiverse of Mediums The Executive Suite Gallery in the Orange County Government Center is hosting a showcase for Middletown artist Catherine DeMaio’s talented use of several artistic mediums: watercolor collages, oils and pastels, through July 14. Encore Program Offers Continuing Education by Tod Westlake If you're over the age of 55, and you're looking for an entertaining but edifying way to spend some time, there are a few seats open in Encore's non-credit program administered through SUNY Orange in Middletown. The program offers a range of courses designed to help seniors to "imagine, explore (and) grow," and in the past has offered numerous cultural outings, including trips to local museums, theater performances, and Bethel Woods. Gert Mokotoff, who has administered the program since its inception, says that the program has been a hit from day one. "We've been going strong now for 15 years," Mokotoff says. "The community really embraced us right from the beginning." The past range of subjects is really quite eclectic, with everything from yoga, quilting and beginning crochet, to foreign languages and film discussion. "We've had computer courses, we've had literature courses, we've had courses on how to write a short story," Mokotoff says. "And we have a very enthusiastic crowd." In the past, according to Mokotoff, membership had been limited to 350

participants. Now, however, the program has been expanded to 400 seats, so those who are interested need to strike while the iron is hot. "We've had a waiting list and it's made us feel bad because not everyone was able to participate," she says. According to Mokotoff, the program is very affordable, so people shouldn't let cost dissuade them from joining. "We are a very low-cost program," Mokotoff says. You can visit the Encore website at www.sunyorange.edu/encore to see the courses offered this past spring. The fall courses will be announced soon, but preregistering for membership is necessary prior to the listing of upcoming courses. The annual cost to join is $55 (which includes two free classes), with most additional classes costing about $10. Memberships slots will fill quickly, often before classes are announced, so those who are interested shouldn't hesitate in calling 845-341-4896 for details.

Meet Sarah Norris : Director / Writer / Actor
Bright, articulate, attractive and bubbling over with competence, that's a thumbnail description of Sarah Norris, director/writer/actor who this summer is beginning her ninth season with the Forestburgh Playhouse. Her journey and theatrical role originated in Huntsville, Alabama as she earned her under graduate degree at the University of Alabama. Interestingly, from the soggy wet lands of the South, she was drawn to the high, dry, desert plains of Nevada, specifically the University of Nevada at Las Vegas (UNLV). Prophetically it was there; in the desert of the American West, Sarah earned her Master's Degree in Directing. Sarah's initiation to theatre was no more than an innocent, flirtatious brush in high school, where she participated in all the been-there-done-that type activities, including theatre. But, she emphatically recalls, "I had fun!" College curricula call for electives and Sarah, seeking the familiar, enrolled in college level theatre courses. It was to give her an opportunity to determine her academic direction. "I fell in love." She fondly recalls. She was smitten and the curtain was about to rise. "I was inspired by the shows; I was inspired by the people. It took a week and I declared my major and I haven't looked back." In addition to her formal academic training in Alabama and subsequently at UNLV, an important work experience was
no doubt instrumental in the formative period of Sarah's professional development. That event appears to have been an internship with Playwrights Horizons in NYC. "Playwrights Horizons is a writer's theater dedicated to the support and development of contemporary American playwrights, composers and lyricists, and to the production of their new work." As an organization Horizons supports and encourages growth and development of the theatre arts. From observed and collected observations of the Forestburgh Playhouse it appears that Managing Director, Norman Duttweiler has created a similar atmosphere. Individuals are encouraged to experience various aspects of theatrical production. Sarah's current role as a director is based on these experiences and her style is one of collaboration with other professionals. Individuals must work together in an effort to create that wonderful illusion known as theatre. By definition, collaboration means working together, accent on work. As a director, Sarah is an advocate of this philosophy and acknowledges the artistic interpretations of the choreographers, musical directors, scenic and costume designers and as well as lighting designers. She remains, however, fully in charge. The process can easily become complicated, for the line of concerns stretches from the catwalk to the ticket booth. For a director, Sarah believes the role of the stage manager to be paramount and she could not be more emphatic in stressing its importance. Fortunately, she believes her directorial position at the Playhouse is facilitated by a talented and functioning stage manager, Larry Smiglewski. Larry, by the way will direct the super anticipated production of "The Buddy Holly Story," opening on July 26. Sarah's theatrical experience reflects stage managers who frequently take notes, recording the vision of the director from artistic conception to the final dress. Sarah is quick to point out, "A good stage manager can direct and a good director can stagemanage!" Sarah as an artist maintains one's interest and becomes increasing intriguing as she
describes her role as a writer. The theatre, Forestburgh Playhouse, will be producing children's theatre as it has done in the past. A production scheduled for this summer is The Three Little Pigs. Not surprisingly, the multi-talented Sarah Norris wrote the book with music and lyrics by husband Kyle C. Norris! Her writing is inspired by a collection of her own experiences, people she knows, people she loves. For The Three Little Pigs she draws on her fond, frequently humorous childhood memories of sibling rivalry, spiced with a Southern flare and a sprinkle of blue grass. This writer finds the process and the anticipated production most appealing and it has been added to the list of not-to-bemissed summer treats. Sarah will be the director of the wellknown rock musical Jekyll and Hyde, opening at the Forestburgh Playhouse on July 12 and running through July 24th. The play is based on the novel The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. In 1997, the show was nominated for the Tony Award, Best Musical. Indications are that under the direction of Sarah Norris it will surpass all expectations. The original show has undergone several rewrites, revisions, additions subtractions, etc. All can not be
included for obvious reason, but in this case the director has the advantage of being able to orchestrate collaborative decisions that determine what's to be included and what's to be dismissed. Sarah's objective: "to create the best performance." Initially it was stated that Sarah's directorial experiences in the high desert of Nevada were prophetic. That view is reflective of the role she plays so adequately. The director must work with raw materials, the animate and the inanimate: a bare stage, lights, costumes, and actors some well-schooled and others with little more than bubbling ambition. From this, the director's assignment is to create a spectacle of beauty combined with intellectual wonder. Consider now a spring in the high desert of the American West, where dust, sandy soil and broken rock surrounded by bits of untended scrub brush, are transformed into a blanket of color and wonder, while the night sky boasts of an unimaginable number of spectacular stars. A wonder and beauty to be admired and a reflection of Sarah Norris' pure talent and direction. And so, as was asked in another and distant forest some time ago, "Shall we [her] fond pageant see?" - A Midsummer Night's Dream (Act III, Sc. ii).

This is not about Hamlet's dilemma or the parts of speech or even historical linguistics. "To Geek" is about passion, pure, unadulterated passion. Readers know what it is and most have felt its soft caress and unrelenting grasp. The Josephine-Louise Public Library, under the firm hand of Ginny Neidermier, is leading the charge by geeking everything in sight and joining with the community libraries of Pine Bush and Wallkill (the hamlet) as a part of a national library awareness campaign, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Language and communication skills are what libraries are all about. American English remains alive and well, subject to sporadic growth and the tides of influence. The word choice of the Campaign, "geek" is in common usage as a noun with various connotations and serves as a fine example. For the purpose of promoting verbal and library awareness, the verb "to geek" was coined and simply means to feel passion for a particular person, place or concept. "I geek Puccini operas!" and "I geek musical theatre!" are common examples. Name your passion; the public library supports it and so much more. The Campaign's transformation of a noun to a verb is not so revolutionary when considering other recently born infinitives: "To tweet" and "to Google."
July 2011
Useful words possess grammatical versatility, functioning easily as nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives even interjections. And who's to say? "To geek" may become the new adolescent expletive, replacing the more offensive. To geek the community library is to embrace all it has to offer and to understand why it exists and how it's supported. The push is to bring to the public an understanding: The library does not exist simply by divine fiat. Recently, it was reported that just shy of 70,000 residents visited the library and completed 44,000 transactions. The library currently has access to over 36,000 fiction, non-fiction collections that include 4,800 CDs, videos and DVDs. A library can operate as a job center by providing the opportunity for online applications and job searches. Recently the American Library Association reported that 70% of public libraries provide the sole location for free and public use of computers and the internet. A trip to the library can also help individuals discover what they geek, by exploring the fascinating topics to be discovered online. Beyond the traditional library offerings e.g., books, reading for children, etc., more opportunities for geeking are offered. i.e., online homework assistance, genealogy research, exposure to artists and historians that otherwise would not be encountered.

The camp is not to be understood with frivolity, for its stated mission is to expose young musicians to the reality of performance in the musical field. Young musicians, ages 8 through 19 are grouped by ability, age and interest into functioning "rock bands." Each group is then monitored and motivated by a staff member. Staff members and coaches are actively performing professional musicians, each keenly aware of the discipline and knowledge necessary for successful live performance. It's the harsh realities, e.g., the lights, the stage, the heat and the fatigue about which students must be made aware. Each coach / teacher closely monitors his group through two weeks of demanding rehearsals, each rehearsal four hours in duration. At the conclusion of rigorous basic

Making Music on Multiple Instruments in Pine Island and at Sugar Loaf’s Free Outdoor Concerts
e'lissa jones, apparently loves lower case letters. Check out www.elissajones.com. Born into a musically gifted family, e’lissa began singing and playing piano around the age of five. "At a very early age, my mother trained her girls to sing harmony and play the piano,” she states. “At the age of five I remember my mother keeping us up late singing in thirds with one another. We were to be the next ‘Jones Girls’” e'lissa wrote her first song at the age of seven and began studying violin at the age of ten. At eleven, she was writing love songs and short classical works for violin and piano. While classically trained as a violinist, e'lissa is largely self-taught as a vocalist and guitarist. e'lissa possesses a dark and melancholy voice with a velvety quality reminiscent of jazz singers. Her songs embrace audiences with powerful melodies and expressive lyrics. Influential styling ranges from folk music, jazz, rock, and R&B in her catalogue of over 250 original songs.
After her July 3 performance (see calendar) in the Bertoni Sculpture Garden in northern Sugar Loaf where free concerts take place every Sunday in July, e'lissa goes southward to Pine Island for the Warwickbased media group and production company, Bozarts, where she performs at the Warwick Valley Winery on July 7. Then it’s northward again to southern Sugar Loaf on July 14 for the free 6:30pm On The Lawn series at Lycian Centre in Sugar Loaf, where e’lissa will be part of an enormous roster of musicians performing every Thursday in July and August on the beautiful Lycian lawn. Bring chairs & blankets. (Concerts are indoors in the air-conditioned Pavilion if it rains.)

Holistic Living The Body/Spirit Connection by Vero “Medicine Wind” Bero I have noticed a pattern amongst humans. We are ever trying to split ourselves down the middle. We either take care of our bodies, getting a little caught up in ego and lessening the power of the heart to the power of mind OR we mind the garden of the divine, giving full attention to our spiritual pursuits and letting this earthly container, the body, suffer neglected. The good news is that this is simple human oversight and the marriage of body and spirit is possible and necessary to reach our full potential spiritually and physically. Health is the key to Spirit and Spirit is the key to Health. Or to quote a famous book,

Summer Camps & Free Teen Classes in Montgomery
Wallkill River School (WRS) is offering local children and teens a chance to have creative fun and become young stakeholders in the community. These classes combine local history, indigenous species, and cultural icons into fine art classes that are fun, hands-on art making experiences. “We want to give our local youth a creative alternative to mind-numbing video games, and hanging out at the mall,” says WRS director Shawn Dell Joyce. Children’s Summer Camps range from Claymation workshops with local teen Rudy Troncone, “Following in the Footsteps of Jane Colden”, America’s First Female Botanist with Dell Joyce, and Funky Fashions where girls make their own clothes with Jenna Gustafson. Younger children will love “Recyclable Art, Native American Art, and Papermaking” with Fawn Johnson. For children 10 and up, “Tie Dye and Batik” and “I Want to be an Artist” with Shawn Dell Joyce. There’s even a scale model train lay-out
workshop designed for parents and children. The Free Teen classes were paid for through a benefit auction organized this spring by the nonprofit artist’s cooperative. Classes range from Black and White Darkroom Photography, Beginning Drawing, Beginning Painting, Cartooning and building a portfolio for art school interviews. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for local teens,” notes Joyce, “we are able to offer it this summer because we have a generous and supportive community that has helped us to make this happen.” Teens who are interested in pursuing a career in the arts will get help compiling a portfolio and meet professional artists who live and work in Orange County. “We want to encourage our youth to keep their talents in their home community. You don’t have to move to the city to make a living anymore! We have animators for Disney, cartoonists for Marvel and D.C. comics, Fashion Institute (FIT) grads and teachers, and arts professionals living and working right here, in our county,” says Joyce. Summer Camps are held at the WRS on Mondays-Fridays in July and August from 10:00am-3:00pm. Free Teen Classes are offered at different times. A brochure is available, or registration can be taken online at wallkillriverschool.com or by phone 845457-ARTS.
Learn to Walk on Stilts
Teens Write & Perform for Kids in Sugar Loaf Kings Theatre Company at the Lycian Centre is introducing new Children's programming at its "On the Wharf" Theatre by the Lake in July and August. The first production, Alice in Wonderland, will take place on Tuesday, July 19th and Thursday, July 21st at 11:00am and 1:00pm.
This Alice is a new version of the traditional Lewis Carroll story and incorporates song and dance in a drama performed by ten actors from the Kings Teen Theatre Program. The teen group has developed its script from a variety of texts and improvisation. This version maintains all the characters that we all have grown to love. The Cheshire Cat, Caterpillar and the Red Queen are all there as Alice struggles to find her way home from this
Topsy Turvy world. The students, some of whom have been training for three years will be presenting the show for public performances in July. Paul Ellis, Director of the program, is thrilled to have the opportunity for his students to perform a full length play. "There is a point where training has to lead to a full play. These students are more than ready and I am so pleased that Kings Theatre has asked us to produce the Summer Children's Theatre. I am sure everyone will be surprised at the quality of their performances." This past season the Youth Theatre added a middle school class. The regular class program runs in the fall and spring. The program is now in its fifth year and runs three workshops a year. The Wharf Theatre is in a completely enclosed tent, and protected from the elements. There is also plenty of available space on the lawn for picnicking before or after a performance. Advance-discount tickets may be purchased by calling the Lycian Centre Box Office at 845- 469-2287, Tuesday through Saturday between 11:00am and 4:00pm. Who Do these People Think they Are?
General Washington knew exactly what he was about, in 1781, by trying to convince the British and his own soldiers that he would attack New York City. Unbeknownst to all, but trusted officials, he had agreed to move with the French Army south to Virginia. In Virginia, a French naval force from the Caribbean would join them to complete the encirclement of the British 24

Army at Yorktown. The soldiers of the 2nd and 3rd Continental Artillery Regiments, encamped at New Windsor, since the previous November, spent their time assembling and training on heavy siege artillery. Without the heavy guns to batter down the fortifications of British General Cornwallis’Army at Yorktown, the decisive victory achieved there would not have been possible. On July 24 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm costumed historians will think and act like they were the actual participants, at Knox’s Headquarters, in 1781, making the final arrangements for the movement of the artillery to the south. For more 845-561-1765 ext. 22. Knox’s Headquarters is at 289 Forge Hill Road, in Vails Gate.
