From The Publisher... by Barry Plaxen Synchronicity of the month: The Hills are Alive with the Sounds of Music and Art. Quote of the month: “I never knew a guitar player worth a damn.” Vocabulary Lesson: Conté: a drawing medium composed of compressed powdered graphite or charcoal mixed with a clay base. Memento mori: symbolic reminder of the inevitability of death. Highlights of the Month: Vinyl LPs in Warwick, Operetta in Callicoon Center, Chicago in Bethel, Erratum The Upfront Exhibition Space is located in Port Jervis, not Milford, as published on page 8 in the June CANVAS. A new museum exhibit in Grahamsville, and live theatre in Goshen and Forestburgh. Sikh music in Milford and Polka music in Pine Island. I am happy that the return of CANVAS is equated to normalcy. I cannot count how many emails Sophie and I received with people saying things like, “Now that I see CANVAS in circulation, the world must be back in order!” and “CANVAS is back?!? Life must be getting back to normal!” (take a peek at our Letters to The Editor below - there are but a few of the many emails we received). We are touched. We are thankful. We feel the oneness of it all. We are so looking forward to August.

Letters To The Editor You have no idea how delighted I was to find CANVAS in my mailbox once again! Now I know the pandemic is just about over. The paper looks as good as ever - a little thinner, unlike the rest of us after all those months of sloth and overeating, but colorful and full of good reading. Congratulations on your comeback! Judith Wink, NYC SOOOO nice to find an old familiar friend in my mailbox! And what a fitting cover and tribute to a remarkable man and artist. Campbell Hall: All in the Poetry Family “Since my retirement in September of 2019 I’ve gotten serious about writing poetry,” says Steve Grogan. “I have 4 poems published. Robert Milby has been like a mentor to me, very helpful. Mary Butler is my muse. She got me started in this poetry adventure. I have two children, Jill and Shane, who are both published poets.” Steve was the featured poet for Noble Coffee Roasters’ (NCR) June 2020 poetry reading, hosted by Milby. “I have been writing poems for two years now,” says Jill Grogan. “My poem Bright Star was published in The Trolley in late June. I attend SUNY Orange. I first started with liberal arts,

but I recently changed my major to business. “My dad is the one that got me into writing poetry. Poetry has always been how I expressed myself. Poetry is MY form of expression. Reading at Noble Coffee Roasters is such a cool experience for me. Everyone is always super nice. This is my first featured reading as a poet and it’s an honor.” Robert Milby, Orange County Poet Laureate Emeritus, hosts readings at NCR, 3020 NY-207, Campbell Hall, every first Thursday. Jill Grogan will read her poetry on July 1 at 7:00pm, followed by an open mic. For more information: 845-294-8090.

Florida: Hillcrest Plein Air Festival

“I am organizing the Plein Air and curating the exhibits. Hillcrest Entertainment is really a lovely site; very Monet-like, with a big pond full of lily pads and a small wooden bridge. Today, while there, we saw a red hawk and blue heron, several deer and a snapping turtle,” said artist and arts entrepreneur Karen E. Gersch, known for her art, theatre and circus productions. Hillcrest Bar and Grille will be open all day on July 17 & 18, with indoor and outdoor seating for the Hillcrest Plein Air Festival. Doors open to the

public at 11:00am. There is also a kids recreation area (small playground) near the Marquee. From Noon-3:00pm on Saturday only there will be supervised kids’ art activities in the Marquee exhibition tent. And at 5:00pm both days there will be an auction of the plein air work created. Sunday will also feature an allday art exhibition in the Marquee tent. “I’ve invited artists to bring other work to display that day,” added Gersch. The location is 1 Durland Road, Florida. The event is FREE! Families and children welcome.

The Wurtsboro Art Alliance in July The Wurtsboro Art Alliance has announced that their Gallery will be open Saturdays & Sundays from Noon-4:00pm. As always, there is a dazzling array of art to choose from: handmade jewelry, pottery, paintings, prints, and fiber arts. The work accompanying this article is by WAA fiber artist Gaby O’Neil. During the pandemic, Gaby received a large collection of beads. Little by little, she designed the first piece pictured. It is truly a wonderful piece to see and a reminder of how the pandemic winter shaped our time and talents! The second piece shown is stitched fabric, which is another one of Gaby’s favorite mediums. 4

Gaby is also a talented painter who constantly explores new techniques and combinations. The Wurtsboro Art Alliance is a group where all artist-members can display their talent and contribute to the running of a gallery. A 100% volunteer organization, members rely on each other for support as they display their art and offer classes to the community. If interested in learning more, stop by the gallery on a Saturday or Sunday soon, or come to a membership meeting! The next one happens on July 27 at 6:00pm at the Gallery, 73 Sullivan Street, Wurtsboro. Visit www.waagallery.org

Hurleyville: ICE and PRIDE ICE Ice Memory refers to an ongoing climate research project where core samples of the world’s vanishing glaciers are being archived in long preserved frozen cylinders to retain a tangible record of past climate changes. Ice Memory is also an exhibit, an artistic reflection on this same quest, by Jaanika Peerna, offering an opportunity to witness an evolution of the work, not unlike the changes we witness in our natural landscapes, encouraging us to meditate on the way human actions alter the environment that surrounds us. Peerna’s work will be on view at Gallery 222, Hurleyville, from July 2 to August 29. The opening reception will be held on July 2 at 5:30pm. PRIDE House of Yes was created in 2007 by Kae Burke and Anya Sapozhnikova, two friends who just wanted to make art and have a good time. With lots of help and lots of love, the original idea of

House of Yes transformed into a reality beyond what anyone could have ever imagined. House of Yes is coming to Hurleyville for “THE event of the summer you won’t want to miss,” at Hurleyville Performing Arts Centre. This special event is a day party and carnival celebrating love, selfexpression and the magic of summer in the Catskills. There will be a celebration and entertainment for all ages, all people, all humans and creative creatures. Live music, interactive art, kid’s activities, games, vendors and circus shows will all happen for: “YES YES YES Hurleyville Pride” on July 24, from 2:00pm-7:00pm. And it’s FREE!

May I Have A Word With You...

Quips, Quotes & Quiddities with Carol Pozefsky OPEN SAYS ME... Art museums around the world are reopening, but cautiously. Now that Covid cases are slowing, the International Committee for Museums and Collections of Modern Art (who knew there WAS one?) has issued guidelines for museum visitors. By now we know the drill. We may still be asked to limit the size of our group, keep our distance, and have our temperatures taken. In addition, we may be required to sign a guest register to help track the source of possible new virus outbreaks. Museums are urging the public to check online or by phone for up to date admission information. TWO BOOKS When its editors announced that CANVAS was up and rolling again, it was a great time to revisit our private stock of word books. Two immediately came to mind. 1.The Superior Person’s Book of Weird

& Wondrous Words, and 2. Foolish Words (The stupidest words ever spoken). Alternating the selections would be fun. Deblaterate: To Babble: “The meeting is open. Let the deblateration commence!” Tallulah Bankhead: “I tell you cocaine isn’t habit forming. I know, because I’ve been taking it for years.” Gymnophobia: Fear of nudity: One’s own and/or others. Derived from Greek: gymnos = naked, phobia = fear. John Lennon in 1966 interview with London Standard: “Christianity will vanish and shrink. I’m right and I’ll be proved right. We’re more popular than Jesus now.” Languescent: Becoming tired. Joshua had to leave his Zoom meeting. Languescence had set in. Vernon Presley to his son, Elvis in 1954: “I never knew a guitar player worth a damn.” Proctalgia: Pain in the backside. (Readers are encouraged to create their own sample sentences ☺). Headmaster of Pembroke Lodge School to schoolboy Alec Guinness: “You’re not the acting type.”

Double Bass Duet in Monticello

The Double Bass rarely has opportunities to shine in front of an audience, let alone two of them! Andrew Trombley and Justin Kujawski will present an evening of duets featuring the Double Bass, performing duets by some of the great composers for the instrument, some original arrangements of familiar tunes, and even a world premiere! The E.B. Crawford Public Library, 479 Broadway, Monticello, presents Double Bass Duet on its outdoor stage on July 22 at 6:00pm. Masks and social distancing are

The Wallkill River School’s Storytelling Art! Art is rarely about portraying the world just as we see it. But Fantasy and Mythology, the upcoming group show at one of the three gallery spaces in Wallkill River School (WRS), takes the viewer deeper into the imagination of the artist, as it explores the supernatural, folklore, and stories. The juried exhibit features 16 pieces chosen by jurors Robb Gomulka and Paula Arwen Owen from among nearly 50 works. “Storytelling has always been a centerpiece of human culture. Much of the earliest art represents narratives and supernatural themes,” remarks WRS executive director, Sarah Fortner Pierson. “This group show, as well as the two accompanying solo shows, tap into a sense of wonder and mystery, exploring themes both delightful and dark.” Concurrent with the group show, juror Paula Arwen Owen will present a solo exhibit, Paper Tales, her interpretation of legends and folklore from around the world. Owen explains, “I utilize the medium of cut paper and collage to explore the contrast of darkness and light. My inspiration stems from mythology, dreams, and the natural world.” Currently residing in Wurtsboro,

Brooklyn native Owen is a graphic designer and illustrator, as well as an author and graduate of Parsons School of Design. The third gallery will feature juror Robb Gomulka’s The Boy in the Bubble, a series of 3 dimensional painted wood illustrations which when combined, form a narrative tale. “Come on a surreal trip through the imagination of a curious mind. Explore bending time, space, and color!” invites Gomulka. A Goshen resident since 2006, this father of two girls, originally from Binghamton, is in high demand as a freelance graphic designer, illustrator, and artist. Gomulka is president of the Goshen Art League and, along with exhibiting in shows, is a leading presence in organizing and marketing exhibitions

and public art events in the region. Having taken part in group shows together during the past several years, both Gomulka and Owen express delight in having been invited to co-present solo shows and adjudicate the group exhibit at the WRS. “It’s going to be exciting and great fun to see these three exhibits together in that beautiful gallery space!” said Gomulka. The public is invited to the reception on July 10 from 5:00pm-7:00pm. Refreshments will be served and Rumble Trio will provide live music. All three exhibits can be seen July 2 to August 29 at WRS, 232 Ward Street, Montgomery. Call 845-457-2787.

WRS Kids’ Classes Due to a recent successful fundraiser, WRS will offer children scholarships for summer art classes. The eight-week long classes are small, offering ample individual attention. Classes are taught by eight teachers, many of whom come to the program from local K-12 schools. The program also offers volunteer opportunities for older youths. “We expect to serve over 250 students this summer. And there are still openings available,” says Pierson. “Our classes cover a wide range of topics and materials which challenge kids to think out of the box and really flex their creative muscles.” She continued, “Along with our creative staff, I eagerly look forward to welcoming our summer youngsters. I’ve seen many friendships blossom over the summer as kids finally meet others with similar interests. It gives me a deep joy to see the connection in their eyes.” Classes are held both indoors at WRS and at Benedict Park, Montgomery. Virtual: The Middletown Art Group 2021 Members’ Summer Exhibition In 1946, the Middletown Art Group was formed “for the purpose of exchanging ideas between artists, craftsmen, art teachers and students, and for providing an atmosphere in which to improve individual skills and respect for the efforts of others.” MAG also has an open membership which encourages people of all skills to join, share, and learn. Now in its 75th year as an art organization, MAG is celebrating this milestone and cheered by the community-at-large for its vitality and continued creativity. Normally, the group has an annual show in Orange Hall Gallery at SUNY Orange during the month of May. Due to the pandemic, no MAG art show took place in 2020. In order to make sure the opportunity for displaying art by MAG artists was not missed in 2021, Cultural Affairs at SUNY Orange has produced an online exhibit of fifty-five artworks by twenty-nine member-artists. The Sullivan County Chamber Orchestra’s Upcoming Crescendoing Collabs! “Here is all the season information as we have it,” explained Sullivan County Chamber Orchestra (SCCO) Artistic Director, Andrew Trombley. “As you can see, we have expanded a fair bit in our time away during this awful pandemic! We are returning with a full year of concerts and many of the performances will be with chamber music. We will have one full orchestra concert in June 2022. “The biggest change we have is a regular Saturday concert series at the Hurleyville Performing Arts Centre Ballroom. The marketing is still being tweaked and we hope to have everything finalized this month. Currently the strategy is to promote the season through December 2021. “The Delaware Valley Arts Alliance reached out to SCCO to invite us to be involved in the Big Eddy Film Festival, so we have added an additional concert on September 30. Details are being finalized but I believe the concert of classical music used in iconic films will be at Bethel Woods. “The season info does not include fundraising concerts which are tentatively planned for February 12, and

possibly one in April, which will pick up our Tastes and Sounds of Italy - our house concert that was scheduled for March 2020 and was cancelled due to the pandemic. Also there are ‘empty’ months in which we may have an impromptu recital (November) and possibly a digital event (January). “Finally, we were awarded a grant to build a series of interactive Family Concerts which will be in August, December, & May,” Andrew concluded. The exciting new season lineup begins with another new collaboration, this one

with Big Galut(e) led by SCCO violinist Alexander Margolis. Another concert will feature music by Jewish composers whose careers and lives were abruptly cut short by the rise of the Third Reich, and another program of music composed by female composers to celebrate Women’s History Month: Ethyl Smith, Clara Schumann, and Fanny Mendelssohn. Other composers to be performed this fall are Ellen Taafe-Zwilich (first female composer to receive a Pulitzer Prize), and Iranian-American composer Giti Razaz.

Besides Hurleyville and Bethel, SCCO will perform in Monticello and White Lake (and maybe Narrowsburg). There will be Holiday Pops concerts and Mother’s Day concerts, and the season will end with SCCO’s first full orchestra concert in over 2 years, with the music of Beethoven and Shostakovich. Very impressive, indeed! SCCO educates the Aspiring Young Musicians program and the Summer Music Academy at Nesin Cultural Arts, 13 St. John Street, Monticello. Students enrolled in the program receive private lessons, opportunities to perform in large and small ensembles, and perform in the community outreach program. Students receive instruction in History Style and Culture and participate in a Side by Side concert with the SCCO. The Summer Music Academy schedule includes technique class, supervised practice, instrument building, musical theatre, musical composition, and dance: ballet and jazz. For information: 845-798-9006. SCCO is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
