Greenwood Lake: New Art Movement Albert O’Hayon was born in Morocco. He studied art at Ecole Des Beaux Arts in Paris and had his first show there as well. He continued his art career by illustrating commissioned books and magazines. He has worked in fine arts, collecting, discovering and helping to sell the works of several masters. The pandemic found O’Hayon in his Greenwood Lake Studio where he devoted himself to an entirely new trend and style. He abolished any boredom or threatening objects from his paintings, and focused on landscapes, sun, mountains,
and the sea. He used a gradations technique to create a pleasant contrast in his finished work. Using rich colors with nearly invisible brushstrokes, he mixed neo-impressionist with the abstract resulting in a new art movement. His works are influenced by Claude Monet, Paul Cezanne, Sandro Botticelli and Wassily Kandinsky. The Art Gallery at the Greenwood Lake Public Library, 79 Waterstone Road, will present the work of O’Hayon for the month of June. For info, contact Aimee at 845-477-8377 ext:107.

“Pricked and Broken” in Newburgh Julia von Eichel’s work is concerned with the tension between chaos and control. Her process is highly focused from initial creation to the final piece. Furthermore, the juxtaposition of precision and serendipitous expression is constantly at play. Her sculptures and drawings are notably meticulous. Upon closer examination, the pieces are closely and obsessively structured networks. Ultimately, she seeks to create a complex interplay between the natural world and the world of the artist’s hand. Von Eichel’s idiosyncratic sculptures appear to be obsessively structured networks. Metaphors for life itself, they bring to mind a range of subtle transformations, from memento mori to the experience of birth: the tension and dynamism of life (spikes, atomlike Wiffle balls) breaks through the smothering, all enveloping shroud of death (the silk coated with gesso). Visitor Center in Newburgh will unveil Pricked and Broken, a solo exhibition by Julia von Eichel. The artist is presenting a series of brightly hued wall sculptures and paintings inspired by the emotions she felt while quarantined in Upstate New York.
“Thistle” by Julia von Eichel
These sculptures will be in conversation with a series of oil pastels on mylar: clusters of branched, tubular filaments merging with luminous, kinetic networks of swirls that almost vibrate when hit by light. Nature’s pulse permeates Julia’s work, which is continuously informed and inspired by her passion for gardening and landscaping. Ultimately, she seeks to create a complex interplay between the natural and the imaginary world. Pricked and Broken is at the Visitor Center, 233 Liberty Street, Newburgh, through June 11. And...A solo exhibition by Angelo Filomeno: In between dreams at dusk will inundate the Visitor Center with color from June 18 to July 30. Visit www.visitorcenter.space

Holland Tunnel Gallery: 25 Years! Holland Tunnel Gallery celebrates its 25th anniversary with an exhibition of the founding artists. Holland Tunnel Celebrates 25 Years honors the journey from the original backyard shed turned hip gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn to the current space in Newburgh. When gentrification in Brooklyn became out of control, Paulien Lethen (pictured) moved her gallery to Newburgh as chronicled in the documentary film Requiem for Williamsburg. This exhibition celebrates that endeavor as Holland Tunnel Gallery continues to provide quality arts and entertainment for the Newburgh community. Participating artists include: Paulien Lethen is a Dutch-born artist who spreads her time between her studios in Brooklyn, Paros (Greece) and Newburgh. In her artwork, she employs a minimal color palette with bold and decisive strokes that give a nod to the figure while remaining minimal and abstract. Paulien is the founder and director of Holland Tunnel Gallery. The
2019 awardwinning documentary Requiem for Williamsburg chronicles her life and art. Alexandra Limpert, a kinetic metal figurative sculptor based in NYC. Bix Lye, a British-American artist whose sculptures challenge definition. Jacques Roch (b. France 19342015) lived many decades in NYC. In Roch’s paintings, the comic narrative is combined with high-key swaths of color that evoke cynical delight. Jan Mulder: For more than a decade, the writings of Romanian poet Paul Celan have provided themes for Dutch painter Jan Mulder. Larry Lee Webb is a Brooklyn based artist who creates abstract paintings and collages. Susan Daboll is an American photographer and painter living between Paros, Greece and Jersey City, NJ. The exhibit runs weekends through June 26 at 46 Chambers Street, Newburgh. Visit www.hollandtunnelgallery.com and see ad on page 25.
Shakespeare: FestFolio & Groundlings Greenwood Lake Theater, in partnership with Warwick Historical Society, presents FestFolio!, a weekend festival of Shakespeare’s plays performed in the First-Folio Style. Greenwood Lake Theater is Orange County’s only Equity Professional Theater company, partnering with the Warwick Historical Society to present quality productions in a unique setting. Its mission is to offer patrons a stimulating, dynamic, entertaining experience by retelling classic stories through theater, education, film, music and art. For FestFolio! actors read a “cue script” which contains a cue line and their lines. There is no rehearsal process, and actors put their scripts together on the day of the show. The end result is a spontaneous, zany, and high energy show delivered by professional actors. Audiences can expect to laugh, cry, and be amazed by The Bard’s own works in his original style. The Festival runs in Lewis Park, 80 Main Street, Warwick, and Old School Baptist Meeting House, 29 High Street, Warwick, from June 3 through June 5. Plays include: Hamlet, A Midsummer
Night’s Dream, Twelfth Night and “Groundlings’ Choice”. The ‘groundlings’ were commoners who were also referred to as stinkards or penny-stinkers. The name ‘groundlings’ came about after Hamlet referenced them as such when the play was first performed around 1600. Groundlings were spectators who stood in the pit of an Elizabethan theater. COVID-19 policy requires masks to be worn in the Old School Baptist House; outdoors optional, but social distancing will be enforced. FestFolio! is graciously sponsored by Rhinebeck Bank. For tickets: visit greenwoodlaketheater. org or call the Warwick Historical Society box office at 845-986-3236, ext. 10. Beer and wine will be available for purchase.
Come pARTy with The Wallkill River School! For the past several years, 100 for 100, has been the largest and most wellknown fundraiser among the Wallkill River School (WRS) community. “100 for 100 was terrifically popular and great fun for our donors,” said Sarah Pierson, WRS executive director. “However, it had its limitations in that it was restricted to 100 attendees. Also, many of our regular donors have run out of wall space to hang larger pieces of art.” “And so, the biggest fundraiser of the year at WRS has had a make-over,” explained Maureen Crush, board president. “The PARTY will now be the fun, new way to support WRS. In addition to the requisite fundraising, we are looking forward to a really fun time among our artists, our donors, community members, and all supporters of WRS.” “We’ve re-envisioned our spring fundraiser as a giant, fun blow-out for art lovers. This year’s theme is Wildflowers 2022 and it celebrates spring, our landscape, and the creativity of our members,” enthused Pierson. Attendees will enjoy art, games, live music, activities, photo ops, and of course, food and beverages. 6
Plus, in the tradition of sending WRS fundraiser attendees home with original art for their collections, WRS artists have painted and donated “5x7” pieces of art. Each PARTY-goer will get to choose from among the offerings when their ticket number is called. “These are original, beautiful pieces of art in a very manageable size for our guests to keep or give as gifts, “explained Pierson. Each ticket holder will receive: Admittance to the PARTY!, festive food and drink, 5”x7” mini original artwork (there will be a drawing similar to the 100/100), an opportunity to bid in the silent auction for larger original work, art games & activities, live music, and our deepest gratitude and appreciation! Three options for tickets are: 1: Buy individual tickets ($60 until May 31. $70 starting June 1.) 2: If you can’t attend, you can select “Donate My Ticket.” 3: If you want to bring a group of friends, select the “Party Pack” of 6 tickets at a discounted rate. Russell Ger, Music Director of the GNSO, said, “‘The core of this performance is Sibelius’ gorgeous Fifth Symphony. Sibelius’ composing hut was situated under a migration path of Finnish swans. Every year he bade farewell to these majestic creatures and awaited their return after the long winter. This symphony climaxes with a glorious melody he called his Swan Theme. “The first half of the program opens with Nielsen’s Helios Overture, an ode to the sun god from Greek mythology, and Tchaikovsky’s deservedly loved Swan Lake Suite.” Sibelius: “Symphony No. 5” “By separating the final six chords of this movement, and the whole symphony, Sibelius created one of the finest

Goshen Art League: Group & Solo Exhibitions
“Breakfast at Blooming Hill Farm” by Naomi Genen
Goshen Art League (GAL) tries something new with their current exhibit: Mini Solos Group Show. Mini Solos is the creative effort of League member and treasurer, Pat MacDonald. The League had been searching for a way to give its members different access to show more of their work. How do you make that happen with so many members and limited exhibit space? ...with some math, creative thinking and lots of planning! Pat realized the beautiful exhibit space at the Goshen Music Hall provided by owner, Gerry Hluchan, could be divided into seven to eight ‘spaces’ that would allow the same number of artists to hang approximately three to seven works of art at once depending on the size of the works. And if there were three of these

SCCO Quartet: “Muss es Sein?” Join the Sullivan County Chamber Orchestra (SCCO) for a string quartet concert to end its 2021-2022 Season! The final years of Beethoven’s life were not pleasant. They were full of emotional and physical stress caused not only by his deafness and declining health but from difficult personal matters involving his family. Perhaps this is why the final movement of his op. 135 string quartet bears the inscription, “Der schwer gefasste Entschluss,” in English: “The Difficult Resolution.” Opening the Akiko Hosoi, movement with the lower Violin strings Beethoven opens with a threenote motif with the questions “Muss es Sein? There is no direct connection between Beethoven’s Op. 135 and Shostakovich’s Op. 110 short of the premiere of the work being premiered by the Beethoven Quartet in 1960, but it is no secret that this work holds the unbearable weight of Shostakovich’s pressure being a closet dissident of the Soviet regime. Oquaga was a cosmopolitan melting pot of various Indian tribes, factions, religions and political loyalties. It was located on both sides of the Susquehanna River near present-day Windsor, New York. Since 2009 Michael Bisio, a jazz double bassist, composer, and bandleader, has been the bassist for the Matthew Shipp Trio. He appears on over 100 CDs, leading on 12 CDs and co-leading on another dozen. Bisio has composed over one hundred works which have been performed in clubs, concert venues, and festivals, and have been broadcast over assorted media. Most have been recorded; some were composed for films and theater, and
one was used in animation. In his book, Jackson Street After Hours, music critic Paul de Barros called Bisio one of the heirs to Seattle’s earthy yet innovative tradition, and marked his compositional style as “a spare, bluesy sound, the sweet-and-sour timbres favored by Charles Mingus.” Bisio composed the music for Karl Krogstad’s film Strings (1985). Beat Angel (2004), a film by Randy Allred with Vincent Balestri, features Bisio’s compositions and improvisations. Bisio also composed music for Music for American Voices: Bukowski, Micheline and the First Amendment, a play written and performed by Vincent Balestri. His “Solo Show” will be at UpFront Exhibition Space, 31 Jersey Avenue, Port Jervis, on June 15 at 7:00pm. UpFront’s art gallery opens at 1:00pm for viewing the current art show and will be open through to the concert. Tickets at the door. BYOB! Phone: 845-754-1808.
Immersed in Color at The ARTery The Artery Gallery presents a new exhibit in June titled Immersed in Color featuring the works of Claude Larson and Chris Hobbs. This dual exhibit showcases colorful works in paper, acrylic, textile and mixed media. Claude Larson’s current work has developed from her experiences with places. Everything from frequent hikes in local woods to time in the American Southwest and historic St. Augustine have found their way into her recent textile work and acrylic paintings. Color, shape and patterns combine in a visual representation of what seeps in while she is immersed in new surroundings. The essence of sand, soil, sea, sky, cities and landscapes are what Claude brings home from her travels. Her studio becomes an incubator for these explorations to emerge in unexpected ways. Chris Hobbs, a founding member of the gallery, whose 3-D paper sculptures have been a favorite of visitors, has been creating his unique dioramas for over 30 years, which have won more than 30 awards. His work remains unique in the art world, layering hand-drawn

designs, both realistic and abstract, into dimensional, depth of field explosions which never fail to amaze the viewer. While the abstract designs, created within a limited color palette are optically amazing, the ever popular scenes like that of Coney Island and re-creations of Victorian houses are a hit! Immersed in Color runs from June 9 to July 4. Meet the artists at the opening reception on June 11 from 6:00pm9:00pm at 210 Broad Street, Milford. Phillipsport: Live Music (& homemade pie!) Denitia Odigie is a singer-songwriter who exemplifies American cultural enlightenment. Born and raised outside Houston, Denitia’s southern Denitia Odigie heritage forms a canvas for her evolving musical portrait. As a child, she performed in church choirs and taught herself to play piano and guitar from her family’s trailer in the woods. She carried those experiences with her as she made her way around the country, moving to Nashville for college, and Brooklyn thereafter. Denitia’s portfolio reveals melodic stories spanning states, cities, and times. Fusing elements of country, folk and rock, Denitia establishes a newfound American utopia, ongoing and indefinite, uplifted by wistful vocals and the chimes of a tambourine. With her songs as mantras, Denitia aims to reimagine what it means to be home. If you know the music of Woodstock, Robert Tellefsen’s sound is nothing short of embodiment. The grit in his voice, the rhythm in his strumming, pretty much everything about his act all points to

one unmistakable source: Richie Havens, who taught him to tune his guitar to “open D” and form chords by bringing his thumb Robert Tellefsen over the top of the fingerboard: Havens’ own work-around. This reverse hand technique was much easier on Tellefsen’s joints. Since Havens’ passing in 2013, Tellefsen has dedicated himself to honoring the music of his friend and mentor, the sounds of Greenwich Village and the spirit of the original Woodstock. These days he tours the tri-state area, keeping the music of Woodstock alive. “I’m trying to bring it back home, the beauty of somebody sitting on a stage singing to a crowd,” bringing us all “back to the garden”. WJFF Radio Catskill: A Voice for The Community - New Home, New Volunteers Radio Catskill (WJFF) is an independent voice of the Catskills & Northeast Pennsylvania, connecting listeners through locally focused and globally aware programming, seeking to inform, entertain, and inspire our communities and to promote understanding among people of diverse social, cultural, and political backgrounds. In June 2021, Radio Catskill officially broke ground at its new location in Liberty. The former Catskill Harvest Market building on NY-52 was donated by long-time supporter Barbara Martinsons, and is now ready!, transformed into a new broadcast facility with high-level industry standard digital studios, a community space, offices, and grounds. Board of Trustees President Thane Peterson said the new location will strengthen the station’s community connections and inclusivity. “We will reach out to young people,” he said. “We will engage minority communities. [And] we will forge alliances with arts organizations across the region.” Board of Trustees Vice-President Kirsten Foster said, “The move to Liberty is not just about a new state of the art physical space, and will feature a new visual identity. We are excited to continue to bring global, national and locally produced radio to our community we love so dearly from our new headquarters and new spiritual center.” Producer and host of Catskill Character Donna Fellenberg said, “As a host of one of the Saturday morning lineup of locally produced shows, I couldn’t be more thrilled about our move. The opportunity for more community engagement is one reason. I’m totally “all in,” along with the new and improved visibility of the station, the up to date equipment and hopefully, a tower that never lets our signal down! These are just a few of the things we can look forward to as we move into the new era of WJFF Radio Catskill. All of that being said, we will still provide the listeners with our own “down home” community centered programming and that’s a good thing!” “WJFF represents community, and it makes community. While the station connects us to the larger world via NPR shows, locally produced shows - Farm & Country, The Janus Adams Show, Catskill Character, Radio Chatskill, and The Local Edition - bring local people and projects together. The hosts of music shows bring a diverse wealth of passion and knowledge to the airwaves, music in all genres. The new location in Liberty
is going to make it possible to expand all these community connections, through events, production work, community gardening, performances. It’s an exciting time to live in the vicinity of such a robust community radio station,” said Jason Tougaw, host of The Mixtape. “When I joined WJFF about 4 years ago, I was struck first by the familiar feel of my first Christi Johnson (left) and Tim Bruno Radio Catskill WJFF’s new home in Liberty unveil Christi’s beautiful dove at WJFF job in radio some 55 years ago. the station was limited for many months, on our public service announcement It was for all appearances a small local and just as many workers decided to retire team. radio station.
