From The Publisher... by Barry Plaxen Welcome back from the Pandemic: Amity Gallery, Warwick, Walker Valley’s monthly UFO support group meeting. Synchronicities of the month: Soprano Melanie Henley-Heyn’s onewoman opera show “Opera 101 or Opera in a Nutshell” will actually take place in what used to be the Nutshell Art Center. Due to space limitations, we combined two classic movies showings at Shadowland Stages and JosephineLouise Public Library into one story. It wasn’t until afterwards that we discovered that both films, Salt of the

Earth and On the Waterfront, were both released in 1954. Vocabulary Lesson: Neoteric: new or modern; recent. Highlight of the Month: Hudson Valley Gives Day! Support our many non-profit arts organizations for as little as $5. $10? $25? More? Kudos to: Chris Meyer for his creation of the Savage Wonder Festival in Sugar Loaf. In this issue: Live theatre has blossomed in Goshen, Hurleyville, Monroe, So. Fallsburg, Sugar Loaf, and (in early June) Ellenville. Opera season opens in Lake Huntington.

Ivanoff Talks Porter Carolyn Ivanoff of the Civil War Preservation Trust is passionate about U.S. History and the Civil War. “These are the greatest subjects because they teach students who we are as Americans and help them understand themselves.” Dr. George Loring Porter (18381919) was the only commissioned officer present at the burial of John Wilkes Booth; had medical charge of the imprisoned conspirators against President Lincoln; was present at the hanging of five of them, and accompanied the others to the Tortugas. He is the author of many valuable medical papers, and has a fascinating history. Ivanoff speaks on The Remarkable Life of George Loring Porter at Desmond Center for Community Enrichment, 6 Albany Post Road, Newburgh, on May 6 at 10:30am. Dedications to Ukraine in Port Jervis The Spring Group Show at UpFront Exhibition Space brings together art, some of which responds to what is happening in the Ukraine. Daniela Cooney’s work depicting a nightingale with sunflowers combines the national bird and flower of the Ukraine. Joyce Lee presents the glorious sunflower in its rich strong colors, a resilient face to hardship. Roz Hodgkins combines the seasons in a measure of space from glacial mountains forward to an emerging single autumn leaf, late season growth coming through the frost. Delaware Valley Opera’s 2022 Season: “Voices of Spring” Skulduggery! Assassins! CoWgiRLs! Join the Delaware Valley Opera for a rousing, diverse, stimulating, creative, dramatic, beautiful and colorful 2022 season starting with Voices of Spring! The kick-off event is a series of three concerts celebrating DVO’s progress and its value to local singers. Three singers, all for whom the DVO has played a vital part in their vocal careers, will return to DVO to share their talents and artistry. Melanie Henley-Heyn will perform her one-woman opera show: Opera 101 or Opera in a Nutshell. (Editor’s note: Ironically, the DVO now performs in its own theatre which used to be the Nutshell Arts Center. So you could be said to be seeing Melanie’s Opera in a Nutshell as Opera in THE Nutshell!) Melanie was 10 years old when she first performed with DVO as Amahl in Amahl and the Night Visitors. She performed with DVO every summer from elementary through high school. After high school she headed out to the west coast to study opera and has enjoyed a beautiful career singing all over the world. Welcome Melanie back home for this exceptional event on April

OCAC: Music at Safe Harbors Green Orange County Arts Council kicks off its annual summer OC Live Music Series with musicians Daniel Villegas (Latin/Hip-Hop), Ohene (Afrofuturist), and The Steve Frieder Band (Funk/ R&B/Rock/Jazz). With captivating Hip-Hop, Soul, Latin & Caribbean music, in rhyme, rap and poetry, Daniel Villegas brings an innovative and freestyle sound. Occasionally, he break-dances his skills into his endeavors wherever he goes, as he passionately talks about ways to think and move geometrically. He also demonstrates through his unique sound and music that the whole Earth’s group consciousness is changing. Ohene wears many creative and performing hats. Besides producing, he plays the drums, guitar, and keys, and is also a singer and songwriter. “I’m a late bloomer and this is my coming of age story,” he says.

“I survived the sordid ghettos to create global change through art. Love is my mission.” Steve Frieder is a versatile multi-wind player. His abilities on the saxophone and finesse in genre and style has brought him to clubs, concert halls and venues around the world, from the Bern Jazz Festival in Switzerland to Birdland Jazz Club in NYC. A musical program, provided by the E.B. Crawford Public Library, includes songs of trains, train wrecks, and other railroad related topics. Come learn more about train culture and join in singing! The husband and wife team of Rick and Donna Nestler have been playing together professionally for over twenty years, performing a variety of different traditional genres including jug band, blues, country, early jazz, and maritime music, falling under the general heading of Americana Roots music. It was while attending Marist College that Rick started to write his own songs. This was also when he first found his political voice playing at various demonstrations and rallies against the Vietnam War and supporting the first grape boycott for the United Farm workers. Rick was a member of the Hudson River Sloop Singers and sailing on large traditional boats whenever possible. It was a short step from there to actually learning how to sing sea shanties. Both Donna and Rick are multiinstrumentalists playing 6- & 12-string guitars, tenor banjo, ukuleles and

concertina, among other things. Rick had a 35 year friendship with Pete Seeger. He sailed with Pete as first mate on his boat the Woody Guthrie. Donna is a classically trained musician and, together, they have performed at many venues, including Lincoln Center, Bethel Woods and the Hudson River Sloop Singer Reunion. They both come from families with roots in railroading! Talented musicians, they will have you tapping your toes and singing! This program will be presented May 12 at 6:00pm outside the Library, 479 Broadway, Monticello, on the stage. Registration is required and masking and social distancing is recommended. Visit ebcpl.org, hover over ‘Events’ then click Adult Calendar to register.

a social network and make life-long friends. Being a member comes with fun, responsibility, and a sense of pride. Prior experience with musical instruments is not a requirement. Consider contacting the band to join, or to see how you can help. The Band meets Tuesday nights from 6:30pm-8:30pm at the Walker Valley Firehouse, 3679 NY-52.

The Studio at Shadowland Stages, where audiences enjoy comfortable seating and concessions, provides an intimate setting for taking in classic films on a big screen. Each of the Shadowland Studio Cinema presentations runs approximately two hours and includes a short subject from the same period as the showcase feature. The last film in the series, to be presented on May Day (May 1) at 2:00pm, will be Salt of the Earth, a 1954 independent drama produced and directed by Herbert Biberman (one of the ten Hollywood professionals sent to prison on charges of contempt of Congress before the House Sub-Committee on Un-American Activities). The film, starring Will Geer, deals with the struggle of immigrant miners and their quest for equity and parity with Anglo workers. Added to the National Film Registry in 1992, Salt of the Earth was condemned at the time of its release by the United States House of Representatives for its alleged

The May film for the monthly Classic Film Series at Josephine-Louise Public Library will be Elia Kazan’s On the Waterfront with an all star cast led by Marlon Brando. In 1997, it was ranked by the American Film Institute as the eighthgreatest American movie of all time. The musical score, composed by Leonard Bernstein, was his only original film score not adapted from a stage production with songs. See it on May 20 at 6:00pm at 5 Scofield Street, Walden. Yalin Chi, Pianist in Montgomery

Yalin Chi, originally from Beijing, China, made her début with the Central Opera Orchestra before moving to the United States to study at Interlochen Arts Academy. She has performed at venues including Alice Tully Hall, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Kumho Art Hall in Seoul, Korea, and ZhongShan Music Hall in Beijing China. Chi’s solo recital last year was selected by the Poughkeepsie Journal as one of the weekend top picks, and Leslie Gerber of the Woodstock Times described her recent recital in the Saugerties Pro Musica concert series as “flowing and masterful,” with “gorgeous tonal coloring.” As an orchestral musician, she regularly performs with Albany Symphony, New Jersey Festival Orchestra, and has held the principal keyboard position at the Hudson Valley Philharmonic since 2014. For the Grand Montgomery Chamber Music (GMCM) series, Chi will perform music by Beethoven (32 Variations in C minor), Bach/Busoni (Chorale Prelude in G minor), Liszt (Mephisto Waltz No.

1), Aleksander Vezuli (Chirpin), and Steven Sacco (Book of Whimsy). Vezuli, also the Artistic Director of the GMCM, is a prolific composer whose compositions range from classical music to songs, to film/tv, and commercials. His String Quartet and Woodwind Quartet in C are fondly remembered by many GMCM audience members. Steven Sacco’s work is often performed internationally by some of today’s leading soloists and ensembles. Critics praise him for writing absorbing, poetic and passionate music that easily engages the sympathies and attention of a concert audience. “Book of Whimsy is a tribute to those pianists to whom I owe a significant debt of gratitude,” Sacco said. This concert series, founded by Howard & Judy Garrett, is made possible by the generous support of the Village of Montgomery and others. Chi performs at the Montgomery Senior Center, 36 Bridge Street, May 15 at 3:00pm. Admission is free. www.montgomerychambermusic.com

addition to working with legendary composer Jules Styne to reprise the role of Fanny Brice in Funny Girl on Broadway. Taylor’s growth as an artist was enhanced by the birth of her twins in early 2002. Her voice became stronger and more meaningful as she took single motherhood, empowerment, surrogacy, and parenthood head-on, becoming a voice and an advocate for working women, same-sex marriage, parenting, and fertility. Her 2016 TEDWomen talk, Born To Sing, opened her career to more speaking engagements, inspirational and monumental moments, and paved the way for the release of her best-selling memoir, Tell It To My Heart. Currently, Taylor continues to tour throughout the world and is working on highly anticipated new music. She’ll be at the Paramount Theatre, 17 South Street, Middletown, on May 14 at 8:00pm. HPAC Welcomes River Rep John Patrick Shanley is an American playwright, screenwriter, and theatre and film director. His play Doubt: A Parable won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama as well as the 2005 Tony Award for Best Play. He won the 1988 Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for his film Moonstruck. Shanley’s classic play, Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, is a heartbreaking and poignant love story, set in a rundown bar in the Bronx, where two of society’s rejects, Danny and Roberta, strike up a halting conversation over their beer. He is a brooding, self-loathing young man who resorts more to violence than reason; she is a divorced, guilt-ridden young woman whose troubled teenage son is now being cared for by her parents. “This play is dedicated to everyone in the Bronx who punched me or kissed me, and to everyone whom I punched or kissed,” stated Shanley.

The drama is the first production of Callicoon’s new River Rep Theatre. River Rep Theatre is dedicated to presenting the finest contemporary playwrights, innovative groupgenerated plays, and bold new adaptations of classics. Christopher Peditto, Artistic Director, and also the play’s director, has cast two professional, classically-trained actors to portray “Danny” and “Roberta”: Sadie Isseks’ credo is that “work in the arts can, at its best, alleviate and ignite the human condition, and should be, at its core, a generous act; an actor without empathy is a tuneless instrument.” Charlie McElveen is passionate about the influence theater can have on a person’s brain, body, and soul, and is dedicated to creating work that inspires love and honest connection. The show is at the Hurleyville Performing Arts Centre, May 13-15. Tickets: www.hurleyvilleartscentre.org

Support the Arts: “Hudson Valley Gives” - A Little Bit Here, A Little Bit There! Hudson Valley Gives is a one day event celebrating charitable giving across the Hudson Valley. Mark your calendars for this year’s event on May 18. The purpose of this day is to create a solid focal point of fundraising for over a hundred nonprofits from Orange, Ulster, Dutchess, Sullivan, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester Counties. “Thanks to many sponsors, in-kind and cash prizes are awarded to participating organizations encouraging donors to give generously on May 18 to help their favorite cause raise more money,” said Elizabeth Rowley, President and CEO of the Community Foundation of Orange and Sullivan. Editor’s note: For those of you who are not in a position to donate large amounts to multiple organizations, one way in which to strengthen money coffers is by giving a small amount to as many organizations as you can. For instance, if your budget dictates that you can donate only $200 for the arts, you can pick 10 organizations and give $20 to each. Or visit 10 organizations and give $50 each if your budget allows for $500. Any amount helps. For those with smaller budgets, if 1,000 people give $5 or $10 to 10 groups it results in $5,000 or $10,000 per nonprofit. A budget of $500 will increase that considerably. At press time, Orange/Sullivan Arts nonprofits participating include: Goshen Art League In 2021, the League celebrated 60 years as an arts organization and enthusiastically seeks opportunities - not only within its own community, but also beyond their borders - to showcase and promote Goshen as a destination for engaging with and enjoying fine art. The League manages the Goshen Art Walks, Keys of Goshen, Painted Trotters of Goshen, and multiple monthly exhibits in various locations. The League wishes donators visit on May 18, as The League is participating in the various May 18-only incentive programs. Chris Farlekas Legacy Fund Your donation will help this fund reach its goal to continue the work of beloved Times Herald-Record columnist and arts supporter, Chris Farlekas (1929-2015). Besides enabling the arts to thrive via his thousands of articles and reviews, Farlekas was involved with veterans, domestic abuse victims, hunger, homelessness, and was an iconic mentor to thousands of students. The fund welcomes HVGives donations May 1-18.

May I Have A Word With You...

Quips, Quotes & Quiddities with Carol Pozefsky SUBLIME Text messaging is swift and efficient. No time lost. “Traffic is heavy, I’ll be 10 minutes late.” But, what we have lost since the ascension of technology, are countless words and phrases of great character and beauty. Supine in the grassy, sun drenched field, in peaceful silence, she watched the clouds above float by. To be supine is to lie face upwards. To assuage is to make milder, less severe, to pacify. Abraham Lincoln was informed that a woman had lost 5 sons in the Civil War. In his letter of condolence, Lincoln wrote: “I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement...” “There had been no extravagant gift exchanges or exotic vacations during their long years together, but, when asked to describe their lives in just one word, together the smiling couple whispered “Sublime”. Sublime stems from the Latin ‘sublimis’ meaning majestic, exalted, exceeding normal limits.

WORDS AND MUSIC The wives of Jerome Kern & Oscar Hammerstein were at a party celebrating the success of the musical Showboat. Mrs. Hammerstein, whose husband wrote the lyrics, was indignant when an excited fan ran up to Mrs. Kern shouting, “Oh your husband wrote that marvelous song, Old Man River!” “Oh no, you’ve got it wrong”, interrupted Mrs. Hammerstein. “My husband wrote Old Man River. Her husband wrote Dumdum dahdah, dah dumdum dahdah...” HUH? I have two well employed, well married sons. One of them has an avocation about which I know nothing. He writes books, countless articles and conducts syndicated radio interviews on the subject. Here is an excerpt from his latest book. You will likely understand it. I do not. “Players sometime fall victim to their own cleverness by continuing with a play even when it’s clear it’s not selling. An example of this is three-betting preflop and being faced with a donk-bet on the flop.” (Author is Ashley Adams).
