His poetry has appeared in over 100 journals, including Ploughshares, The Nation, American Poetry Review and Manhattan Review He is Emeritus Professor of Literature and Creative Writing at the City University of New York and an editor of the journal, American Book Review and advisory editor of BigCityLit

Steve and Barry’s recording Euphoria Ripens was released in 2008. It was listed among the “Best New Releases” in All About Jazz. Now they will collaborate again, as they have many times in Liberty, Livingston Manor, Parksville and NYC, for the Liberty NY Poetry Festival on September 24 at 7:00pm, at 46 S Main Street

A special interest is Barry’s presentation of poetry readings in collaboration with Jazz. He has made twelve recordings of his poetry with Jazz, the most recent being Lisbon Sunset (2018) and Lisbon Sunrise (2022). Slippery, sensuous and sly, his Jazz-inflected poetry may get you “besotted by bliss,” or offer “a burgeoning capacity to lick and love.”

Whether on acoustic or electric guitars, Steve has worked in 17-piece orchestras, down to septets, quartets, trios, duos to solo. He performed with his quartet, Inner Urge at the Bethel Woods’ ribbon cutting event and continues to work throughout the Catskills.

with her series of original drawings called Time These drawings are Celtic mandalas (geometric configurations) that reveal a colorful circular frequency that has no beginning or end. Each mandala serves as a conscious detailed account of a moment in time. Essentially, these are monotypes or monoprints, known as the most painterly method among the printmaking techniques. No two prints are alike. The beauty of this spontaneous medium is that it combines printing, painting, and drawing.Enjoy refreshments and meet the artists at their opening reception on September 10 from 6:00pm-9:00pm. I paint from my heart in the hope of transporting the viewer into a rural world of timelessness. To me, the patchwork of an old farm reveals the fortunes and hardships of the people that have lived there. There is exquisite beauty in a spiderweb. Both are dedicated artists who share a similar work ethic, discovering multiple possibilities through their love of abstract design and love of different color systems. There is a magical quality which is experienced at the completion of a tapestry being cut from the loom or looking at a porcelain vessel coming out of a kiln from a 24hour wood firing.

From the unique blend of Dewey Balfa/ Charlie Poole fiddle riffs to Vince Gill/Albert Lee guitar twangs to Bill Monroe inspired bowed bass lines, the trio’s vast experience and musical tastes show up loud and clear.

For Myra, she is sustained by the love of the weaving process, which is a long, slow, meditative process. It includes preparing the loom, along with the building and bringing to life a drawing through weaving the image line by line, only seeing parts of its true face in a mirror backwards until completed, and then the work is really seen as a whole for the first time.

When lead vocalist and fiddle player Doctor Romo met bass player Mike Aiese and banjo player Thomas Earl at a bluegrass jam in 2015 they quickly realized they had similar tastes in music and decided to work on some bluegrass tunes. When Thomas Earl left the band he was replaced by guitar virtuoso Matt Lamborn, who brought his vast repertoire of songs to add to the band’s already rich cache of songs. Fans requested many other songs, so the band adapted their cache of songs to include Country, Folk, Cajun, and Rock tunes, all played with “bluegrassy” roots.

“The former Beatle has enjoyed a surprisingly lengthy and successful postmop-top career as a composer of classical music. His first foray came in 1991 when he composed a work for the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra which told a musical story loosely based on his own life. Needlework is defined as decorative sewing using a needle for construction. The variety of the many types of needlework is endless and timeless limited only by the imagination of the creator.Historically, samplers were intended to teach young women to sew, and used as well to teach young girls to memorize their alphabet and numbers, and a tool to teach moral values and memorize verses from the bible.

In anticipation of the Milford Readers and Writers Festival (September 1618), Film Historian John DiLeo will introduce four classic movies that were adapted from classic books.

Judith Weir CBE (b.1954) is a British composer and the first female Master of the Queen’s Music. Weir’s musical language is fairly conservative, with a knack of making simple musical ideas appear freshly mysterious. She was commissioned by the Minnesota Orchestra for her work, The Welcome Arrival of Rain. Rainbow Body by Christopher Theofanidis (b.1967) was commissioned by the Houston Symphony. The piece is dedicated to the Texas lawyer and philanthropist Glen Rosenbaum, and is one of Theofanidis’ most-performed compositions. It won the 2003 London Masterprize competition.

Beethoven, a lover of nature, said that his Sixth Symphony is “more the expression of feeling than painting.” The symphony has five, rather than the usual four movements. Each movement has a programmatic title, rare for his time. Frank A. D’Accone suggested that Beethoven borrowed the programmatic ideas (a shepherd’s pipe, birds singing, streams flowing, and a thunderstorm) for his five-movement narrative layout from Le Portrait musical de la Nature

The selected films offer not only exceptional screenplays, but a raft of performancesunforgettable by Golden Age film actors such as Laurence Olivier, Flora Robson, Mary Boland, Edna May Oliver, James Dean, Julie Harris, Jo Van Fleet, Audrey Hepburn, Mickey Rooney and many, many others.

The Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra (GNSO) opens its 28th season with a colorful concert themed After the Rain, featuring works by Beethoven, Judith Weir and Christopher Theofanidis, GNSO Music Director Russell Ger said, “Rain has long been my favorite natural element. It is so cleansing to see and hear the roar of water pouring from the sky, nourishing and nurturing all life. It is no wonder that composers have been inspired to incorporate it into their “Beethovenmusic.creates a wonderfully vivid storm in his Sixth Symphony, replete with audio lighting, and followed by a warm hymn of thanksgiving after its passing. Weir imagines an exuberant and dazzling soundscape, lush in its colorations and cascading torrent of notes, which she said reminded her of the onset of the monsoon season in India. Theofanidis produces a piece based on the Buddhist notion of a Rainbow Body, where the physical form of an enlightened being is absorbed back into the universe upon its death. It is wonderfully uplifting and a beautiful metaphorical conclusion to the concert.”Maestro

Program # 2: September 8 at 7:30pm and September 10 at 7:30pm

This program is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a re-grant program of the New York State Council on the Arts administered by Arts Mid-Hudson, and in part by the Orange County Arts Council Community Arts Grants

Often referred to as “The Painter of Autumn,” second generation Hudson River School artist Jasper Francis Cropsey (18231900) began his artistic career as an architect. Cropsey traveled and painted extensively in Europe, but the majority of his works are situated in the northeastern U.S., particularly in New York and New Jersey.Settling in the Greenwood Lake area after his marriage, Cropsey found the vivid autumn country landscape very appealing due to the intensity of the warm colors that he was able to capture using ‘new’ chemically-based paints. “Depth” by Colleen O’Hara

“It’s an honor to work with The Jazz Coalition to continue our tradition of presenting world class jazz in the Hudson Valley and further our mission to support living artists at The Falcon and beyond,” said Lee Falco

Grammy®-nominated Theo Bleckmann makes music that is accessibly sophisticated, unsentimentally emotional, and seriously playful, leading his work to be described as “from another planet.”

Shifts in Space: Colleen O’Hara O’Hara creates imaginary landscapes inspired by her interactions with real physical space. This body of work is rooted in an exploration of the material nature of paint. Working in a space between control and freedom, she responds to the materiality of paint, allowing her the opportunity to investigate the physical world. Brush marks, drips and splatters become a documentation of her existence and engagement in the world. The act of making, doing, and experiencing is what gives us information about ourBothsurroundings.showsare on view through September 18 at the DVAA galleries, 37 Main Street, Narrowsburg.

The new campaign will fund live concert performances of 15 previously commissioned artists and ensembles, Sundays, September 11-December 18.

The Delaware Valley Arts Alliance (DVAA) will present Watch the Curve, featuring objects/ sculptures and a public performance by Katie Coughlin, and Shifts in Space, featuring large-scale paintings by Colleen O’Hara

Watch the Curve: Katie Coughlin Coughlin investigates the notions of home, vessel, body, and clothing through the manipulation of space and material. Although clay is most often the place where Coughlin begins her work, she uses other mediums, specifically cloth and wood, to expand her sculptures. These materialcollaborative apparatuses allow her to incorporate the human body, placing her work between object, sculpture, and performance.

The Jazz Coalition, a vital artistic and financial support initiative for jazz musicians during the Covid-19 pandemic, announces a new fundraising campaign to help support their presentation of live concert performances and recordings of commissioned artists and works. The coalition was formed to manifest unity among the global jazz community at a time of mass unemployment, painful lost opportunities, and increased struggle in every area of life.

Miriam Hernandez started her art training in high school at age 14 and continued her art education in college and graduate school. “Putting hands and tools to a receptive surface, I employ the creative process as a way to mark time and events, in order to confirm my own impermanence. The goals and methodologies of my life, as an individual and as an artist, merge and blossom as I continue to draw on influences from political events, environmental concerns, and Buddhist symbology.

Now you can enjoy drawing portraits from life in a workshop designed for intermediate and advanced students with prior experience in portrait work. The class is designed for eight consecutive sessions, September 9 to October 20, at 10:00am at the Wallkill River School

At the conclusion of the screening, the audience participates in voting for Best Film and Best Actor. All the venues worldwide count their votes and submit the results to MSFF headquarters, and the winners are announced by MSFF on October 3. Results of the SUNY Orange moviegoers’ voting as well as the worldwide voting will be released via Cultural Affairs e-blast on October 3.

Works in painting, drawing, eco printing, and photography will be on view at Domesticities for an exhibit featuring Miriam Hernandez, Marjorie Morrow, Alexis Siroc and Gail Tuchman titled, Four/For: Supporting artistic expression as a democratic principle. “Some of the artwork will address political themes but it is really a presentation of how artistic expression is a freedom, a “democratic principle” as per our subtitle,” explained Marjorie. “It represents what we, as artists, are FOR...and we’ve tried to remain positive about that in this fraught political environment. A portion of any sales will be donated to the Sullivan County Democratic Committee.”

Gail Tuchman began creating art in childhood with a Brownie Hawkeye box camera and a pencil poised for Jon Gnagy’s Saturday morning TV drawing lesson! Through photographing and sketching, she began learning about composition, perspective, line, color, light, texture. She earned an MA in Art History & Literature, and studied Chinese Painting under Chinese master painter Kwo Da-Wei. Tuchman exhibits in the Catskills and has shown in NYC and beyond. An awardwinning author, she has published many books about art. The public is invited to the opening reception on September 3 from 4:00pm7:00pm at Domesticities, 4055 Route 52, Youngsville. The exhibit runs through September 30. For info: 845-482-3333.

The MSFF offers families and friends, 15 years old and over, viewing of innovative, creative, and some funny films. All final films become Oscar-Qualified, thereby making them automatically eligible for Academy Award nomination.

I let go of the work already created, not wanting to repeat myself, aware of its fragility, and of our own fragile existence,” states Hernandez.

Marjorie Morrow’s paintings and prints have been exhibited nationally and internationally since 1968. She focuses on developing special projects and collaborations, including a multi-part 9/11 collaboration with Drew University and the John Street Church, NYC. Her ArtOrbit® is an online presentation she created featuring collectors of her work and is available on her website.

The Manhattan Short Film Festival (MSFF) is once again highlighting the September events presented by SUNY Orange Cultural Affairs. Now celebrating its 25th birthday, the MSFF is a unique experience as the ten films are screened during a ten-day period simultaneously on six continents in 500+ venues.

The 8-week session is designed so that each student must be willing to sit as a model for one session (sit for increments of 15 or 20 minutes with 5 minute breaks) and thereby allow their fellow students the opportunity and challenge of working from a live model. The class is offered at a discount to account for the modeling time.

Artists were asked to share their unique vision of what happens when the sun sets. Some took a literal approach, finding beauty in the natural world after dark. Others found dialogue in events and celebration focusing on the human element as night fell. More still found a connection with the ethereal, energetic, and surreal as they worked in the darkened hours.

“Entr’acte was written in 2011 after hearing the Brentano Quartet play Haydn’s Op. 77 No. 2 - with its spare and soulful shift to the D-flat major trio in the minuet. It is structured like a minuet and trio, riffing on that classical form but taking it a little further. I love the way

The Quartet members bring a broad range of backgrounds and experience. All have performed in major concert venues and with leading artists, from classical to jazz.

The quartet draws on a wide range of composers and eras, from baroque to modern, from jazz to Afro-Cuban, for its repertoire. This concert will include string quartets by Fannie Mendelssohn Hensel, Benjamin Britten, Dizzy Gillespie, Caroline Shaw, and Guido López-Gavilán.

“So, here’s a question for you: if Franz Süssmayr actually composed from scratch the three movements in the Mozart Requiem that are usually ascribed to him (Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnus Dei), how come they’re a lot better than all his other choral writings - which, I might add, were written by him after Mozart’s death, exactly at a time when he was specifically studying choral composition with Mozart’s yearsfromSalieri?arch-nemesis,supposed-Antonio“Inaletterdated1800(almost10afterMozart’sdeath),

Join the internationally-acclaimed Harlem Quartet for a concert celebrating the 20th anniversary of Newburgh Chamber Music (NCM).

“It is hard to believe that Fanny Hensel needed a “craftsman’s approval” from her famous brother Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in order to be allowed to publish some of her compositions under her own name.” - Fick’s Music.

We are so happy to have them back for this special occasion.”

The committee’s intention, according to Brescia, is to present a Disney Land type atmosphere that welcomes families and cherishes individuals interested in enjoying the celebration of small town America.Adding to the appeal of the day is the fact that the celebration, in addition to recognizing General Montgomery, has become the unofficial reunion day for students from the nostalgia filled Montgomery High School and the Valley Central High School. Howard Garrett (19312020) approached then Village Mayor Josephine Murphy to create a yearly celebratory day, and a short time thereafter, “I had attended Walden Day in 1989 and thought it would be great to have a similar event in the Village of Montgomery,” present Mayor Steve Brescia recalls. Thus, a grand tradition was born. It’s not only a salute to General Montgomery, a hero of the Revolution (KIA, Quebec, 1775) but recognition of the Montgomery business community and Village residents. This year (2022), General Montgomery Day is scheduled for September 10 All day, rain or shine.

Day, is noted for hosting what is reported to be one of the largest diversified parades in the area, with over two hundred units consisting of businesses, service organizations, marching bands, noted and unnoted dignitaries and, of course, area fire departments. With participation at that level, anxious children line the parade route to cheer marchers and retrieve the goodies distributed by passing floats. Adding to the down-home, Americanatype atmosphere are the 8K race, live music (country, rock & blues) and of course, the spectacular fireworks display.

As demonstrated, the villages that join together to form the Town of Montgomery celebrate their respective pasts and hopes for the future in various but similar ways. Interestingly, the concept of a salute to General Montgomery is irrevocably tied to a celebration found in neighboring MontgomeryWalden.resident

Much like families, bands go through it all together. As a unit, they face life’s ups, downs, highs, lows, trials, tribulations, tragedies, triumphs, and everything in between. They change, learn, and grow as one. However, LA band Johnnyswim doesn’t just seem like a family; it is a family. At the core, husband-and-wife team Abner Ramirez and Amanda Sudano translate the memories, moments, and milestones on their journey into spirited, slick, and soulful anthems steeped in singer-songwriter tradition, yet amplified by alternative experimentation, rock energy, and pop ambition. Julius Hare (1795-1855) offers this simile-rich advice for parents, teachers or any of us. “Discipline, like the bridle in the hand of a good rider, should exercise its influence without appearing to do so, should be ever active, both as a support and as a restraint, yet seem to lie easily in hand. It must always be ready to check or pull up, as occasion may require; and only when the horse is a runaway should the action of the curb be perceptible.”

Mark Twain and baseball? An anachronism, one might think, until I read just now that it was Twain who created this baseball image: “He threw himself on his stomach to slide to his base.
