It Started As A Carpet Store, But Is So Much More By Jerri Brouse, For The Daily Item
NORTHUMBERLAND - Attention to detail, great customer service and a good product - these are the things that make Garvey’s Carpet Flooring America stand out from its competitors, according to Erin Cope. Cope works in the marketing department for the family-run business which has been named the reader’s choice for Best of the Valley, 2023, in the flooring category. According to the company website, Tom Garvey founded Garvey’s Flooring America in 1989, out of the back of his mom’s 12×14 shed using his old pick up truck as his “forklift,” before he was able to open up one retail location in Northumberland. He and his wife, Christy, now own and operate the Northumberland store as well as a store in Bloomsburg. “It started out as a carpet store, but it has grown into much more,” said Cope. “We sell vinyl, laminate, tile, epoxy and hardwood. We kind of do it all; just name it.”
PHOTO PROVIDED
The business expanded not just in the products that were offered, but in the customer base it reaches and by adding to the services they provide. In addition to selling flooring, they offer carpet binding, carpet disposal, carpet re-stretch, flooring repairs, and underlayment.
“We want to help them find the right product for their home and deliver it in the most efficient and painless way possible,” she said. “People are inviting us into their home to do work, so we want to make it convenient and less of a hassle.”
“We really service quite a wide range of consumers,” said Cope. “We do a lot of carpet and laminate and vinyl, but we also do a lot of tile work. It just depends on the situation.”
One way they go the extra mile, she said, is to do in-home measures.
Their talents with tile don’t stop at flooring, either. Cope said Garvey’s also installs “amazing” tile showers. With so many businesses struggling in the current economic climate, Cope said Garvey’s has continued to thrive because of its dedicated employees who work hard to make sure products are up to date and on trend. “One thing Tom and his employees do is make sure we stay up to date and are bringing in the best products,” said Cope. “We don’t want customers buying something that will fail on them. He does a lot of research on his own and also sends employees researching products, because he wants to make sure everyone knows what they’re doing.” Christy Garvey agreed, and added they’re also very focused on providing the best customer service possible.
“We can bring samples over, also, so customers don’t even have to come into the shop if they don’t want to,” she said. “It’s really great because they can go to the website, look at products there to see inventory, but also browse samples, use our Pinterest board or look to our social media for finished projects. A lot people can do it all from home, without even coming into the store.” Bringing the samples to customers saves time, preventing them from having to make multiple trips in. “If nothing else, they can go on the website and get an idea of what they’re looking for and that will shorten the selection process,” said Garvey. “There are so many colors and styles.” When it comes to why customers chose their business as the Best of the Valley, Cope said she believed it’s all due to “the Garvey’s difference.” continued on page 8 Thursday, November 23, 2023 /// Best of the Valley ● 7
It Started As A Carpet Store, But Is So Much More continued from page 7 “We have a great staff that works for the company, from the sales staff to installers, everyone cares about the consumer getting what they want and love, not just selling them something to sell it,” said Cope. “We make sure that at the end of the day, they are happy with what they were receiving.” And that’s not just for a little while. “We stand behind our installations,” said Cope. “If it’s 10-15 years down the line and there’s a problem, Tom will step up and try to do whatever is possible. He really stands behind the Garvey name and gives everyone what they love and want.”

Garvey said she was thrilled to hear the company had been chosen for the sixth year in a row. “We couldn’t have done it without you,” she said. “We are very grateful and honored. The consumers are the reason for this achievement and we cherish the support we’ve been given over the years. It feels good to be recognized by friends and neighbors.” For more information visit Garvey’s at 1021 Point Township Drive, Northumberland; or check them out online at garveyscarpet.com.

Not Chocolate Swirl Ice Cream By Cindy O. Herman, For The Daily Item
LEWISBURG – It’s not an ice cream shop, although with Swirl in the name, some people assume it’s got to be about frozen treats. This kind of swirl, however, refers to the confidence clients feel when their hair is coiffed to complement their personality. Swirl Shop Salon & Spa has won “The Daily Item’s” Best of the Valley contest for best beauty and hair salon. “I think we have put in a lot of heart, time and work into improving so many aspects of the business so we can provide the best atmosphere and the most quality luxury services as we possibly can,” said Deanna Bordner, owner, cosmetologist and reflexologist. Clients can see the work Bordner has put into the salon since taking ownership in 2022. Once-stylish dusky walls were painted a peaceful grey highlighted with white woodwork and plenty of greenery. The sunny, open main room boasts new furniture and a custom-built reception desk. The Swirl Shop first opened in 1938 at 533 Market Street in Lewisburg, owned by John Farley and mostly focusing on women’s roller sets and perms, Bordner said. Fifty years later Farley sold it to Aaron and Rena Herman. From there it was owned by Kay Long then Angela Clark, who sold it to Bordner, who moved it to its current location at190 Brookpark Circle. She added “Spa” to the name to cut down on the number of people who assumed it was an ice cream shop.

Deanna Bordner, owner of Swirl Shop Salon & Spa, in Lewisburg, which won The Daily Item’s Best of the Valley Award for best beauty and hair salon.
“It was very much an old ladies’ salon up until my boss took over in 2011,” she said. Beyond haircuts and styling it has grown to include an array of services: spray tanning; nail services; color services for brows, lashes and hair; chemical services like perms and keratin relaxer, waxing services for face, underarm and body; and spa services with everything from facials to ear candling, hand/foot massage, reflexology and reiki. “I have wanted to do this since fourth grade,” Bordner said, explaining that she visited the Northumberland County Vo-Tech Career & Technology Center when her class went there on a field trip. She studied reflexology to relieve stress and pain after a friend practiced it on her right after she’d had her second child. “It helped me so much that I went to class right after maternity leave,” she said, adding with a laugh, “It made me feel normal again.” Today Bordner employs seven people. One of her employees is learning massage therapy, and an esthetician will soon be hired to provide customized skin care services like full-body waxing, lash tints and brow laminations. Bordner enjoys helping her clients feel better about themselves. “There’s been a lot of growth and improvements in the last year for the salon and the spa,” she said. “We think people are really recognizing how much we care about putting back into our clients and the salon, and they’re loving all of the new improvements and service additions.” For more information visit www.swirlshopsalon.net. Family Treats Customers Like Family By Cindy O. Herman, For The Daily Item
SUNBURY – If there were such a thing as adopting a family to help celebrate your wedding, the people at Whispering Oaks Vineyard would be that family. They care that much about their brides and grooms. “They’re all special in their own way. They’re all part of the WOV family,” said Brian Cunningham, who manages private events at the winery with his wife, Jacki Cunningham, and nine team members. It truly is a family. The vineyard was planted in 2010 by Ryan Bonney, vineyard and winemaking manager. His wife, Tracey Bonney, is the president and business manager. Tracey and Brian’s father, Glenn Cunningham, oversees sales and marketing, and other family members and in-laws are involved, as well.
“I think we live up to the referrals,” Glenn said of the recommendations from their wedding couples. The family embraces – literally – each couple and each wedding. “We’re a hugging family,” Jacki said. “We are blessed with the relationships we share with our couples.” For more information visit www.whisperingoaksvineyardpa.com.
The couple from WOV’s first wedding, in 2016, now has two children, Jacki said. She loves seeing couples return to Whispering Oaks for anniversaries and other events. “They always come back, and it makes me smile,” she said. The family discussed the idea for a wedding venue two years before ground was even broken, Glenn said. When they found a six-acre site two miles south of Sunbury, they loved it enough to start the winery and host Ryan and Tracey’s wedding there. “We just felt the grounds, the setting were perfect for developing a wedding venue,” Glenn said, indicating the rolling farmlands and endless skies of the backyard. “We call it the Infinity Lawn. It drops off and keeps going.” They built a state-of-the-art catering kitchen, a loft with a bridal suite and the main event room featuring an oak-stained, cathedral ceiling over a spacious, sun-filled expanse. The room is called the Cill Dara (kill dara), an Irish name honoring Glenn’s heritage that translates to “Church of the Oaks,” a nod to the trees surrounding the property. Glenn has made a tradition of standing on the back deck and photographing moments like the first kiss to present to the couple later that day. “The one thing that stands out for me is that I’ve never seen two weddings alike,” he said. Jacki and her sister, Jen Long, who handles reception and bartending, share in each couple’s happiness. “I always tell them, you don’t stress about anything. You just go get all dressed up, and I’ll worry about everything,” Jacki said. “I always feel good about it. I go out back and thank God we can do this.” “You were made to do this job,” Jen said. “And I love my job too. I love being here for the couples. No one has ever left unhappy.” This is Whispering Oaks Vineyard’s second Best of the Valley award. They’ve earned it by listening to their brides and grooms, Brian said, but also from their family values. “Put us anywhere, and we’re going to excel,” Brian said. “We go above and beyond what we need to do.” 10 ● Best of the Valley /// Thursday, November 23, 2023

‘More Than A Cup Of Coffee’
By Cindy O. Herman, For The Daily Item “They say family and business don’t mix, but for us it’s been awesome,” Eric said. Part of the allure is Wagging Tail’s fun names for signature drinks like Yeti, Lucky Dog and Muddy Paw. Their fall menu featured a throwback to the 2000’s TV show “Gilmore Girls,” with drinks like Sookie’s Pumpkin Roll, Stars Hollow Autumn Festival and Meet Me at Luke’s. “Something we strive for is, Number One, a high quality product. A great cup of coffee,” Eric said. “But we also have a new and changing menu and incredible customer service, with people who know your face when you pull up to the window.” He talked about feeling good when weddings send a runner for beverages for the bridal party, or when Wagging Tail has pitched in with community fundraisers for people going through challenging situations. “Or maybe someone’s having a bad day and they stop by. That’s their pick-me-up. They think, ‘I’ll stop by, and they’ll take care of me,’” Eric said. “It’s more than a cup of coffee.” For more information, visit www.waggingtailcoffeeco.com or “Wagging Tail Coffee Co.” on Facebook.
(Photo provided)
Christopher Branda, of Lewisburg, is such a fan that for Halloween he dressed as a cup of Wagging Tail Coffee.
ALLENWOOD - Never underestimate the power of a community yard sale. While Eric Solomon was stationed at Fort Lewis Army Base, in Washington State, he and his wife, Meghan Solomon, grew to appreciate the area’s “coffee culture.” “You couldn’t go anywhere without running into a coffee hut or shop,” Eric said. “It’s something we had gotten used to.” After a few other moves, they returned to Watsontown, but Meghan found herself missing that good coffee and decided to design her own brew and sell it during the town’s annual yard sale in 2019. “Luckily, people bought some coffee,” Eric said, and Wagging Tail Coffee Co. was born. Starting with a food truck, today the company has 22 employees with locations in Allenwood, Watsontown and Muncy. Wagging Tail was voted best coffee shop in “The Daily Item’s” Best of the Valley contest. “Meghan is very much more the visionary. She’s really the one that designs the drinks and names them,” Eric said. “We’ve been blessed to have people respond so well.” Their business has turned into a family affair, with Meghan’s mother baking scones, cookies and muffins, and Meghan’s brother managing the Muncy store. 12 ● Best of the Valley /// Thursday, November 23, 2023

We Treat Our Clients As If They Were Our Own Pets
By Jerri Brouse, For The Daily Item LEWISBURG - Whether you have a dog with minimal grooming needs like monthly nail trims or your pup’s needs are a little more high maintenance, you don’t have to look any further than Brookpark Pet Supply’s grooming department to get the best care for your furry friend. The Daily Item’s readers agreed, and that’s why Brookpark Pet Supply has been voted Best of the Valley for pet grooming. Owner Jordan Fetzer bought the store in 2019 - about six months prior to the pandemic. He credits his loyal customers and their unwavering support through tough times with helping him survive when many other small businesses were forced to close. Though the store was open throughout the pandemic, Fetzer said he had to suspend grooming services because they were considered nonessential services. “But our doors stayed opened the entire time,” he said. “It was a scary and challenging time for sure.” Brookpark Pet Supply employs five groomers and one assistant. Groomers can take one of two paths to become pet groomers, Fetzer said. “There are really two tracks for becoming a groomer - you can either go to school and get certified or do an apprenticeship program,” he said. “Two of our groomers have certificates, three have done apprenticeships.”
Photo provided Kierstin Paroling-Bucher has been grooming dogs at Brookpark Pet for four years.
Fetzer said the state does not require certification for grooming, so the process looks different for individual groomers.
Fetzer said he believes it’s the desire to add a personal touch with his customers that led to being chosen as Best of the Valley.
With that many groomers on site, you might expect to see a high number of dogs (and sometimes cats) come through their doors - and you’d be right.
“I think the biggest thing that sets us apart is that we try to be very diff than traditional box stores,” he said. “We are one of very few individually owned local stores that offer grooming and I think a lot of people appreciate the value of what we offer.
“We do on average about 100 dogs a week,” he said. “If you figure six or seven dogs per shift, per groomer, each one is likely doing some 30-35 dogs each week. It’s quite a business.” Kiersten Paroli-Bucher has been a groomer with Brookpark Pet for the past four years. She said it warms her heart to know the people chose Brookpark Pet as best place for grooming.
Fetzer and his employees like to go the extra mile for customers and has gone so far as to pick up a customer’s dog and return him after the appointment. “We have a customer with a mobility issue, so we do that for her. It’s a personal touch, the customer service we want to provide.”
“I am very proud of our store,” she said. “I think Brookpark Pet stands out as best for grooming in the area because the groomers are very passionate in their job. We also treat our clients as if they were our own pets.”
Fetzer said at Brookpark Pets they get to know their customers and dogs by name.
Besides basic nail trims, baths and hair cuts, some of the groomers take on cats as well.
Angela Brouse of Lewisburg has a Golden doodle, Ollie, with very hard to manage hair and bad skin issues.
“We also have done Guinea pig and rabbit nail trims,” said Paroli-Bucher.
“Not only do I go to Brookpark Pet Supply for my specialty food which helps with his allergies, but I also continuously get him pampered with grooming appointments with Jasmine,” she said.
In addition to full-service grooming for your dog, Brookpark Pet also offers a self-service area for those “do it yourself-ers.” There’s a ramp for easy access and towels, soaps and dryers are provided. If you are looking to do it yourself but at home, the store also carries a full line of shampoos, conditioners, nail trimmers and more to serve your grooming needs. 14 ● Best of the Valley /// Thursday, November 23, 2023
“We care,” he said. “That’s the main difference people will find coming to our location as opposed to a big box store.”
By keeping Ollie groomed every six weeks it helps keep his skin from flaring up and his fur nice and long. For more information about Brookpark Pet or to make an appointment to get your pet groomed, visit them at 400 Farley Circle, Lewisburg; go to brookparkpet.com or call 570-522-0322.

Bakery Promotes Local Farmers By Cindy O. Herman, For The Daily Item
Red macarons wait to be purchased at Gable House Bakery, in Mifflinburg.
MIFFLINBURG – Buy a brand name Thanksgiving pie and you support a food corporation. Not a bad thing to do. But buy a Gable House Bakery pie and, as owner Nikki Keister-Hortig said in a Facebook post, you support the farmers around you: “John grows the squash for our pumpkin custard,” she wrote. “Bobby and Sara grow the apples for our apple pies. Harry grows the raspberries and blueberries. Rebekah raises the chickens that lay the eggs that go into all the custards, pecan pie, crust, and more I’m probably missing. The Kauffman family raises the cows that produce the milk for the custards and creams.”

of making ourselves known, and obviously our products stand up for themselves. I very much stand behind our products.” When she opened the bakery in 2016, Mifflinburg had been without one for several years. “I looked around and said, what can we do that would be an avenue of goodness to our community?” she said.
While supporting local growers, Keister-Hornig has created mouth-watering goodness that won Gable House Bakery “The Daily Item’s” Best of the Valley award.
Having grown up with a mother who made wedding cakes and beloved gingerbread house kits for the holidays, and a father who ran a farm, Keister-Hornig learned baking and business skills and had seen how sweet-smelling baked goods can make people happy. She also realized how hard farmers work and that selling their produce locally can result in better profits.
She pointed out that Gable House’s quality, along with their active social media presence, helped make them a recognizable name.
“It’s also fun to interact with the local people,” she said. “Our egg ladies were just here, and we were chitchatting. I feel like I’m making friends.”
“I greatly respect the other bakeries,” she said. “We’ve done a great job

Bakery Promotes Local Farmers continued from page 19 She also noted that when egg prices went through the roof, her producers stuck to their original prices – they didn’t have to compete with the global market. In being “an avenue of goodness,” Keister-Hornig serves customers – all customers – with cheerfulness and respect. “For some of our neighbors, coming to the bakery and getting a coffee and a chocolate chip cookie is one of the only times they get out of their home, and they know they won’t be judged here as a lesser member of society,” she said. “We greet them with joy and happiness when they’re here, and I’m not sure that’s been their experience in other places in their life.” She also sometimes finds herself recreating a wedding cake her mother, Donita Keister, originally made. “People say, Donita made our wedding cake. It was a carrot cake,” Keister-Hornig said. “Well, I use the same cake recipe and the same buttercream recipe 25 years later. That’s always a joy to do.” In October, with three full-time and seven or eight part-time employees, Gable House handled 22 weddings along with their workload. Looking ahead, Keister-Hornig hopes to expand into a bigger space on the same street. “We’re never leaving downtown Mifflinburg,” she said. “I am thankful we are here and able to do what we do.” For more information visit www.gablehousebakery.com.
