How to get the cottagecore look at home If you love wildflowers, crafting, embroidery, plants and a fairy tale-like esthetic, the cottagecore look may be right for you. THE WALLS To create a dreamy and poetic atmosphere, paint the walls in pastel tones. Alternatively, apply a flowery wallpaper. Just make sure the print isn’t too busy, as this can overwhelm the space. THE FLOOR Whether it’s wood or ceramic, light flooring is a good fit for the cottagecore look. If you add a rug, consider choosing a white or beige macramé model. THE FURNITURE Wood, wicker, rattan and other natural materials contribute to a country esthetic. Look for chairs, tables, beds and other furniture made of these materials.Vintage and antique pieces are also on theme.
THE ACCENTS Floral prints and botanical fabrics will set the right tone. Plants are a must, but consider incorporating dried or fresh flowers into the space as well. Handmade items, vintage dishware and folk art pieces are also a good fit. To create the cottagecore look in your home, visit shops and antique dealers in your area.
2. Hang shelves. Install them above the stove, fridge, countertop and doorway. Shelves provide an easy storage solution for spices, bins of pasta, candy containers, fresh herbs and more. 3. Opt for integrated design features. Built-in appliances or a trash chute incorporated into the countertop can properties featured by help you make the most of a small space. HOW TO ORGANIZE A HOME RENOVATION PROJECT
Are you ready to take on a major home renovation but don’t know where to start? Here’s how to organize your tasks and ensure everything goes smoothly. MAKE A LIST Renovations should be done in a logical order to avoid wasting time and money. For example, you shouldn’t paint the walls before you open them up to install insulation. To ensure you have a clear idea of what’s involved and don’t miss a step, make an extensive list of all the tasks that need to be done. ESTABLISH A SCHEDULE Once you know what your project entails, you can determine a logical sequence in which to complete tasks. In general, you should start with any necessary demolition and tackle large structural projects first. This may include repairs to the foundation, support beams and subfloor. After you’ve addressed all plumbing, electrical and insulation concerns, you can hang the drywall and proceed to the finishing touches.
1. Demolish, starting with the upper floors 2. Make structural repairs 3. Install electrical wiring, plumbing and HVAC ducts 4. Clean and upgrade the exterior 5. Add or replace insulation 6. Replace the windows 7. Close up the walls, ceilings and floors 8. Paint the ceilings and walls 9. Install the flooring 10. Clean up and furnish If you plan to live in the house while it’s being renovated, remember to update only one bathroom at a time. This way you’ll ensure you always have one that can be used. EVALUATE CONSTRAINTS If you can’t afford to complete all of your renovations right away, determine the cost of each project and identify your top priorities. You can either do one room at a time or start with small tasks throughout the house while you save up the money. Additionally, be sure to schedule your timeline around seasonal weather that could affect your renovation projects. For example, it’s best to avoid upgrading the exterior during winter or painting the interior in the summer. For optimal results, consider hiring a contractor who can ensure the work gets done to code.
Depending on the scale of your renovation, you can more or less follow these 10 steps:

CUT Crown mouldings have to be cut at a 45° angle if they are to fit properly in right angle joints. To avoid costly mistakes, do a trial run on the portion of moulding you bought for this purpose. Pressing firmly, stabilize the crown
moulding on the template and cut it with the mitre saw. After placing the test mouldings in a corner and making sure the joint is to your satisfaction, draw some reference points with your pencil.

GLUE Once all your final mouldings are cut, ask a willing volunteer to help you install them. Start by spreading wood glue over the entire surface of the back of the crown moulding before applying it to the wall. Then hammer in the finishing nails approximately every 30 cm. After joining the mouldings in the right angles, wipe off any excess glue with a damp cloth. Lastly, before painting your crown mouldings, fill the nail holes and cracks with the latex caulking and allow to dry.

Over the last few years, neutral colours have been popular for interiors, especially browns, beiges, and lighter tones of grey. These days, however, more colourful shades are moving in, such as dark reds, various shades of blues and greens, as well as rich earth tones, including gold and clay. Sunny yellows are also making a noticeable splash. Another trend is towards the use of blocks of colour on walls. This consists of creating square, rectangular, or round shapes on the walls, usually with the aim of highlighting a specific architectural element. Do your research: good paint stores have take-home pamphlets containing the latest Bright colours, such as dark reds and purples, are among the new stars of the home décor colour palette.

creative ideas. Remember that you should never use more than three different colours in one room. When planning your paint décor, keep in mind the “60-30-10” rule: the dominant colour should take up 60 percent of painted surfaces, the secondary colour, 30 percent, and the accent colour, 10 percent.

Colour trends
Experts on the subject will tell you that trends in the kitchen counter industry have evolved significantly in recent years. Formica and other laminate surfacing products are making way for elegant quarried rock, which brings durability and up-to-date style to any kitchen. Quartz is the material preferred by a majority of home owners because of its similarity to granite. But where granite can be permanently stained by oils and cooking fat, quartz is quite resistant. Counters made with tiles composed of glass, ceramic, porcelain, or natural stone, such as slate, are also popular. Tiles allow you to really personalize your kitchen, thanks to the huge range of textures, colours, and patterns available on the market. For those with ample budgets, a section of marble in a kitchen counter layout represents sheer luxury. Even though this material is ideal for rolling pastry, marble is relatively vulnerable to stains, shocks, and scratches. That is why many people prefer to keep this type of counter for the bathroom. Stainless steel counters are long-lasting, hygienic, and are resistant to heat and rust. They can also be an environmental-
ly friendly choice, as some counters are manufactured from recycled steel. Always available, of course, are the less expensive high-pressure laminate counters. They are resistant to stains, shocks, and heat but are vulnerable to scratching and humidity. Whatever budget home decorators fix, the choice for kitchen counters today is wide. All it takes is some planning and shopping around for the look and cost that best suits them.
Quartz-topped counters are increasing in popularity.

How to safely transport your fragile belongings Transporting a garment bag is simple. Transporting houseplants, an aquarium or a piano, on the other hand, is a different story entirely. Here are some tips to ensure your fragile belongings arrive safe and sound on moving day. HOUSEPLANTS Before the big move, water your plants as usual, trim them, examine them for parasites and transplant them, if needed, in durable pots. Ideally, you’ll want to pack them up individually in perforated boxes the morning of the move. Use tissue paper to protect the branches and foliage. Finally, pack your plants last in the passenger compartment of your car and unpack them first, paying careful attention not to expose them too quickly to the sunlight.
MOVING DAY
Four ways to avoid having to abandon your furry friend Every year, countless pets are abandoned when their owners move. Accommodations too small? Pets not allowed? Your new spouse is allergic? There are many reasons why domesticated animals find themselves prowling the streets, plagued by hunger and exposed to various dangers like disease and bad weather. To avoid having to abandon your furry friend due to a move, here are four key pieces of advice: 1. Start your search well in advance. This way, you’ll have ample time to find a place that both suits your needs and accepts pets.
AQUARIUM As soon as you’ve booked a moving company, let them know that you have an aquarium to transport. Several weeks before the big move, reduce the amount of food you give to your fish, and stop feeding them altogether two days before your departure. Don’t clean the filter, but continue to replenish the water supply. On moving day, unplug the aquarium and transfer a portion of the water into travel crates (or bags) to preserve bacterial culture. Gather the fish, place them in the crates and add an oxygenating tablet. Uproot any aquatic plants and preserve them in a container filled with water. Remove the sand and wrap the aquarium. Transport your fish in the car, making sure they don’t get too shaken up along the way. Upon arrival, reassemble the aquarium without delay, acclimatize the fish and wait two days before feeding them again. PIANO When it comes to moving something as valuable as a piano, it’s always best to entrust the job to a team of professional movers specialized in the transport of heavy items. Before the move, carefully inspect the piano and make note of any defects. If it comes equipped with a humidity regulator, unplug it, empty the reservoir and secure it inside the piano. When moving day rolls around, make sure to have the instrument’s assessment form in hand and inspect the piano with the moving company’s supervisor, who’ll document any existing flaws. Furthermore, make sure to specify the piano’s value in the contract before signing it.
Five common moving mistakes to avoid at all costs Planning a big move? To ensure everything goes smoothly, avoid making these five common mistakes: 1. Hiring the wrong movers. Make sure to do business with a reputable moving company. Avoid movers who only provide one phone number, for example.
5. Being lazy with labels. To avoid having to haul boxes from one room to another and back again (or opening 22 of them before finding what you need), clearly (and accurately!) label each box according to its contents and the room it’s destined for.
2. Bringing everything. Moving is the perfect opportunity to sort through your belongings and get rid of anything unnecessary. You’ll save so much time if you don’t have to pack and unpack a bunch of things you no longer use. 3. Using big boxes. This might seem like a good idea, but don’t forget that a big box filled with pots or books will be heavy and hard to carry — a good way to get hurt on moving day. 4. Forgoing the survival kit. Seeing as you most likely won’t have time to unpack everything the day you move into your new place, assemble a box of handy items you’ll want to keep within reach (scissors, screwdriver, notepad, toilet paper, cleaning products, bedsheets, etc.).
Avoid using big boxes to transport books or other heavy objects on moving day.

2. Introduce your new landlord to your pet. Certain landlords are more flexible than others and may be willing to agree to a trial period under certain conditions. 3. Give your pet to a loving family. Refer to your network of contacts (family members, friends, coworkers, etc.) or place an ad in your local classifieds to find a loving family willing to adopt and care for your trusted companion. 4. Bring your pet to an animal shelter. As a last resort, it’s always better to entrust your pet to an animal shelter than abandon it altogether. However, it’s important to keep in mind that these shelters often get overcrowded, so make sure you’ve conside red all other options first.
Don’t abandon your pet when you move! Instead, get your new landlord acquainted with your furry friend or find an adoption family to provide a good home.
