How to transform long, boring hallways

A long, dark hallway leading to some bedrooms and a bathroom… many homes have them. They are a vestige from the 1960’s and 70’s and, in the decades since, have been a real headache to redecorate. Here are a few tips to help you reduce that long, boring look.

Transforming a corridor into an interesting and agreeable part of the home is not particularly difficult. By learning some simple principles of interior design you can discover how to manipulate the space to add volume in this high-traffic area.

To diminish the effect of length, architectural elements can be added such as shelves or narrow tables on which dried flower arrangements or photographs can be positioned. If you have enough space you could even add bookshelves. Another option is to give your hallway a

picture gallery look by arranging family photographs, paintings or murals on the walls. Paint one of the end walls a dark colour or use warm colours such as reds or oranges, for example. Use wallpaper, also on an end wall, with a bold or large scale design, or use wallpaper with wide horizontal stripes.

Lighting is also an important element in creating the desired effect. Add lamps at short distances along the hallway to give a soft, yellow lighting. For a more dramatic effect create a low shelf, near the base of the wall, on which lights can be positioned projecting upwards to cut the space, creating intense pools of light right along the passageway.

A chair, placed at an angle between the f irst two doors could be the finishing touch and add even more character to what was once a boring hallway.

Refurbish your bathroom

The bathroom is dedicated to your comfort and well-being and deserves a lot of thought when it comes time to renovate. But this doesn’t necessarily involve major changes. As the latest trend is towards a rustic style, characterized by its classic lines, it is advisable to concentrate on the main elements of the bathroom: the bath and the tiling.

Bathroom decorations are still very classic and the traditional materials continue to be enamel, tiles and wood. So if your bathroom is looking shabby, why not give it a facelift.

For the tiling, you can start by removing all the rusting or cracked cement between the tiles. But before installing new cement, liven up the decor by creating a frieze. Draw waves

above the tiles and break an assortment of ceramic tiles into smallish pieces. Select the most attractive ones as well as some pebbles and shells. Apply a thin layer of cement and arrange these decorative elements according to your drawing. Fill in all the joints with cement and your bathroom will look almost new.

Almost new, because there’s only the bath left to be refurbished now. This can be accomplished by renewing the enamel with polyurethane paint. Under the right conditions, this paint should last a good ten years and your bathtub will look like new. The cost of having the enamel redone varies from $200 to $300 and the work should be guaranteed for five years.
