Just make sure the print isn’t too busy, as this can overwhelm the space. THE FLOOR Whether it’s wood or ceramic, light flooring is a good fit for the cottagecore look. If you add a rug, consider choosing a white or beige macramé model. THE FURNITURE Wood, wicker, rattan and other natural materials contribute to a country esthetic. Look for chairs, tables, beds and other furniture made of these materials. Vintage and antique pieces are also on theme.
THE ACCENTS Floral prints and botanical fabrics will set the right tone. Plants are a must, but consider incorporating dried or fresh flowers into the space as well. Handmade items, vintage dishware and folk art pieces are also a good fit. To create the cottagecore look in your home, visit shops and antique dealers in your area.

5 renovations that are better to do in the fall Thanks to its typically temperate weather, fall is the ideal time to complete a number of renovations. Here are some types of projects that are best to undertake in autumn.
5. Remodel the kitchen. If you schedule it right, you could complete your kitchen renovation in time to do your holiday baking in the updated space.
1. Update the siding. Nothing boosts your home’s curb appeal like a fresh coat of paint or brand new siding.
Most of these projects will increase your home’s value. They’ll also protect your home from the elements and, in some cases, help to lower your monthly energy bills.
2. Repave the driveway. A freshly paved driveway will stand up to the harsh winter weather that’s approaching.
4. Change the windows and doors. Much like your roof, your windows and doors play a big role in keeping your home comfortable and dry.
How to remove old wallpaper Removing wallpaper is a home improvement project that seems challenging. However, with the right tools and a little know-how, it’s a task that almost anybody can complete. Here’s everything you need to know about removing old wallpaper using either water, solvents or steam.
• Prep the area. Cover anything you don’t want damaged by moisture, like your floors, baseboards, light fixtures and plugs. • Peel off the facing. If the wallpaper is coated in vinyl or plastic, start by peeling it off, if possible. • Perforate the wallpaper. Using your wallpaper scorer, make holes all over the surface of the paper. No matter what washing machine you choose, opt for one with an Energy Star rating. This guarantees that your new washer will use less electricity and water than their non-certified counterparts.
YOUR LAUNDRY HABITS A large family will use their washer more often than someone who lives alone. If you do a lot of laundry every week, choose a machine with a big drum that can accommodate larger loads.
THE SIZE YOU NEED If you live in a home with a large laundry room, you may not have to worry about the size of your machine. However, apartment dwellers and those with just a small nook for their laundry area should carefully think about size.
Fall cleaning checklist Are you ready to winterize your home? Then here’s a room-by-room checklist of the fall cleaning you’ll want to do this season. BEDROOMS • Clean out all drawers • Get rid of clothes that don’t fit or you don’t wear anymore • Clean and put away summer clothes and prepare your winter wardrobe • Wash duvets, comforters and pillows • Vacuum and flip the mattress
WHAT YOU’LL NEED No matter which method you use to remove your wallpaper, you’ll need a few tools. These include:
HOW TO DO IT Gather your supplies and get to work. You’ll need to do the following:
Are you thinking about updating your laundry room? Before you start shopping for a washing machine, it’s best to evaluate your needs and options. Here are some considerations.
THE FEATURES AVAILABLE These days, washers often come with features like integrated sinks and Wi-Fi connectivity, among others. Do you prefer a simple toploading model or a front-loading one with all the bells and whistles? Keep in mind that the more feature-laden models come with higher price tags.
3. Repair or replace the roof. Your roof protects your home against rain, snow and wind. If yours is due for a renovation, fall is the best season to complete the task.
• A wallpaper scorer to perforate the paper and allow the solvent, water or steam through. • A scraper to separate the wallpaper from the wall. • A spray bottle to apply solvents and water. • A steamer, which can be rented or purchased. You can also use a clothes steamer.
What to consider when shopping for a new washing machine
If you’re using a commercial solvent (wallpaper stripper) or water, do this next: • Moisten a section. Spray the surface liberally with the liquid. Allow it to sit for 15 to 20 minutes. • Scrape the wallpaper. Using your scraper, carefully separate the wallpaper from the wall.
KITCHEN AND BATHROOM • Clean and organize all cabinets • Wash the shower curtain and liner • Check the caulking around the sink, tub and shower and reapply if necessary • Scrub the grout between tiles
• Clean all appliances • Seal and polish natural stone countertops THE WHOLE HOUSE • Hire a carpet cleaner or steam clean the rugs and carpets yourself • Spot clean furniture upholstery • Wash all windows and windowsills • Clear cobwebs from ceilings and walls • Clean baseboards • Disinfect light switches and doorknobs It may seem like a lot of work, but by tackling one room at a time over the course of a few weekends, your fall cleaning will feel manageable.
If you’re using a steamer, you’ll need to do this: • Turn on the machine. Wait for the water to boil. • Apply the steam. Start with a corner close to the ceiling. • Peel off the wallpaper. As you apply the steam, use your other hand to pull the paper away from the wall. No matter what method you use, you’re bound to be left with a few stubborn patches that won’t come off. Using solvent, scrub any remaining bits of glue or backing from the wall. Once it’s dry, prepare it for a fresh coat of paint or new wallpaper.

Your water heater has broken down? A leak under your sink has done a lot of damage? You want to add a tap to the outside of your house? Call in a qualified plumber who will know how to adequately carry out any repairs or other work according to your specific needs.
Because of his training, during which he has learnt about the mechanics of piping, the different plumbing systems, drainage, vents, pumping, heating, soldering work and the reading of plans and estimates, the plumber will be able to determine the lay-out of the pipes, the water-supply and sewage systems in private homes, businesses and commercial buildings. More specifically, he measures, cuts, bends and machines threads in pipes with the help of manual or mechanical tools. He installs and ensures the maintenance of plumbing accessories used in the distribution of water. If necessary, he checks the piping with the help of manometers to detect leaks and carries out water-tightness tests. His knowledge in the areas of distribution lines, heating and cooling systems, heat exchangers and small, water-treatment systems, make him an indispensable specialist. The plumber works for plumbing contractors, the service industry or for large companies. He could also work for himself.
Your lighting consultant has some bright ideas!
Professional painter: a colourful trade Knowing how to handle a brush and a roller doesn’t necessarily make you a professional painter. To be sure of a job well done, it’s important to call in a competent professional. The work of a painter is very varied and can include renovating, painting and hanging wallpaper. He has acquired the knowledge to be able to accurately read plans and estimates, to prepare wood, stucco, metal and synthetic surfaces before proceeding with finishing coats, applying liquid products (paint or varnish), granular products or paper, vinyl or fabric wall coverings, etc. He is also familiar with the techniques of stripping, sanding and cleaning and has studied different decorating techniques. Before painting a surface, he first of all ensures that it is clean and smooth so that the paint adheres well. Generally speaking, the professional painter spreads a coat of primer before applying the paint with the help of brushes and rollers. He also takes care to respect drying times between the different coats. The professional painter works in the construction industry, decorating boutiques and with building contractors. Acuity of vision and a good sense of colour, an attention to detail, dexterity, resistance to strong smells, to toxic vapours and to dust are the main qualities of a professional painter. He is a specialist who also has to be comfortable with heights as he often has to work on scaffolding.
The plasterer knows what he’s doing!
PLASTERER
LIGHTING CONSULTANT
A plumber must be autonomous, be able to take the initiative and be at ease working in an environment involving many different trades.
PROFESSIONAL PAINTER
PLUMBER
Plumber: an indispensable specialist
The quality of the lighting helps to enhance the decoration of the rooms in your home. A lighting professional will guide you in the choice of products which will create the ambiance you’re looking for.
We recognize a good job done by the competence of the worker. So call in a qualified plasterer to be sure of having an impeccable endproduct. His experience and his little tricks of the trade will meet your expectations.
The lighting consultant, who works in decorating boutiques, specialized lighting shops as well as in department stores, can help you choose products according to the layout of the various rooms in the home and take into account the colour of the walls, the window dressings, the arrangement of the furniture and the floor coverings.
The plasterer applies limestone compounds such as plaster, mortar, cement, stucco and others; he installs mouldings, metal trims and angles, makes and fills joints in drywall panels, works on plaster mouldings and the casting and installation of plasterwork.
For example, a torchiere floor lamp will make your living room more warm and intimate, while the installation of a dimmer in the dining room will allow for the adjustment of the light to the desired intensity. Bedside lamps, reading lamps or table lamps with a nice shade, ceiling lights, fluorescent lights, recessed lights, halogen or incandescent bulbs, chandeliers or wall lights, your specialist will tell you all about the different types of lighting, their effect on the decor and, a not unimportant factor, their energy efficiency. Apart from the initial cost of purchase, the electricity consumption of your new appliance should also be taken into consideration. A good specialist will be able to suggest products to you which correspond to your needs and will, at the same time, help you save energy.
After having cleaned the surface to be plastered, he mixes the ingredients to obtain a plaster of the desired consistency. With the help of various tools (trowels, brushes and guns), he applies smooth, even coats of plaster. Depending on the work required, he could apply coats of roughcast on the exterior walls of a building in such a way as to create surfaces which can resist the elements. The plasterer is also skilful at creating decorative motifs in the finishing coat as well as moulding and installing panels, cornices and ornamental mouldings made of plaster. This specialist works as much in the commercial and institutional sectors as in the residential sector, often for small businesses. A recognized qualification is usually required. During his training, the plasterer acquires knowledge in mathematics, technical drawing and the chemistry of the materials. He must be meticulous, accurate and creative. In good physical shape, he has to be comfortable with heights and working in uncomfortable positions.
Like all people working in retail sales, being sociable, dynamic and self-confident as well as having the capacity to listen so as to really understand customers’ needs and an ease of communication, are important assets for a lighting consultant.

Some small but indispensible jobs Carry out a thorough inspection! Our winters often have a few unpleasant surprises in store for us and, unfortunately, this can include damage to our homes. So, it’s really important to ensure that no repairs need to be done before those winter storms start blowing. One of the main elements of any inspection is undoubtedly the state of the roof. It’s not every day that we go up there and often enough we don’t really know what’s happening over our heads. So, getting the ladder out of the garden shed is the first step in this important job. A quick look over the roof will
usually tell you if some of the shingles are damaged or missing. These shingles must be replaced and, at the same time be sure to solidify any which seem to be coming loose. After this, the state of any roof joints should be checked and the necessary repairs carried out. Joints are relatively easy to fix and will avoid annoying water infiltrations. For those of you with a roof made of multiple layers of tar, any damaged areas must be filled in order to ensure that leaks will not occur. Now that you’re safely back down on the ground how about having a look at the foundations. Small cracks do not necessarily cause any damage but, if they’re bigger than a few millimetres wide, it’s a good idea to have the foundation inspected by a professional. And, after all that work, you can now relax in the knowledge that your house is ready to face up to another winter. It’s very important to inspect the outside of your home before the winter arrives.
Looking after a house takes a lot of time and effort, so it’s not surprising that we sometimes forget to do some little jobs which are really quite important. At the beginning of the winter, the list of jobs to be done can get even longer than usual, so here are a few reminders to get you started on all those “musts” of the season. Firstly, be sure to turn off all the outside taps and empty the hosepipes before storing them in a frost free area, thus preventing any damage being done to them when temperatures drop below zero. The garden furniture should also be stored in a protected place in order to keep it looking nice for next summer. While you’re doing these jobs, walk around your property to check that the slope of the land will allow for adequate drainage when the snow melts in the springtime. Water accumulation near a house can cause serious damage. On top of this and still on the topic of water, a thorough inspection of the guttering is always a good idea. Often enough, dead leaves and other debris
can collect in the gutters and block them. This would also be a good time to ensure that the gutters are securely installed and to carry out any necessary repairs. Fall is a great time to do any paint jobs around the house. Because of the cooler temperatures, the paint will adhere much better than in the hot summer sun. So if you feel like giving a fresh look to your front door or the garage this is the ideal time to do it. In short, a few small jobs can avoid some big headaches and will allow you to spend a relaxing, carefree winter.
It’s always a good idea to give your house a thorough inspection before the first snow flies.
Save energy! Is your heating system in good working order? Carrying out routine maintenance jobs helps to ensure that we can enjoy carefree living in our homes. Some of these chores are unavoidable while others are forgotten in the rush of our daily lives with all the resulting consequences. Here are a few tricks to prepare your house for the winter which is rapidly approaching. Firstly, it is essential that the heating system be inspected and it’s always better to call in a professional to carry out this work. For those of you who have gas central heating, this inspection should be carried out every two years while those with oil heating should
have it done every year. Moreover, don’t forget that any filters should be changed once a month when the heating system is in use. Any electric baseboard heaters should also be checked at this time. Dust and other debris have probably collected in them over the summer, which could prevent them from working properly. So cleaning these baseboard heaters would be appropriate in order to maintain them in good working order. This is also the perfect time to carry out the annual inspection of your chimney. There’s nothing better than a crackling fire to warm you up when it’s freezing cold outside, but it’s imperative that this is done safely. Be sure to have the chimney cleaned by a qualified professional in order to eliminate any risk of carbon monoxide poisoning or chimney fires. In order not to overlook any of this important work, why not create a do-not-forget list of all the jobs to be done from one season to the next? This way you’ll ensure that everything in your house is in good working order and you can sleep peacefully in your bed all year round. House maintenance should always be a priority.

The winter is coming, temperatures are going to drop and we’ll all want to stay warm and cozy in our homes! In order to give our home heating system a helping hand, checking for even the smallest of air leaks is a good idea. Heating bills are high enough and no one wants to pay even more because their house is badly insulated. The first thing to do in this war against cold draughts is to detect their source. To do this effectively all you will need is a lighted incense stick placed near any likely places. By watching the movement of the smoke you’ll be able to see if there is a problem at that particular spot.
forget to check for draughts around all the electrical outlets and any air conditioners as well as along the base of walls. In short, this task will allow you and your family to profit from the warmth and comfort of your home as well as saving money on energy bills right through the winter season.
The best place to start is by checking all the doors, where weather-stripping could be damaged. If this is the case, be sure to replace it with a product designed for inside the house and not for the outside, which can be toxic. After this, check the windows. Take the screens out for the winter and don’t forget to lock the windows to prevent ice build-up. Fasten windows which will stay closed throughout the winter with a transparent, removable seal. A band of adhesive foam insulation will increase the air tightness of the windows which will be opened. Lastly, don’t It’s easy to prevent cold draughts when winter is fast approaching. Kitchen cabinets that aren’t white For years, many kitchen renovations have focused on white cabinets. While popular, this choice can be uninspiring and often difficult to keep clean. Here are three ideas for your kitchen cabinets that will stand the test of time but have a bit more personality than white alone.
can’t get with white. No matter your style, there’s a grey that will work for your kitchen. Go for an almost-white tone for an unexpected twist or try a charcoal hue for a more dramatic, elegant look.
1. BLONDE WOOD Naturally pale wood combines the fresh, airy feel of white cabinets with the warm, homey feel of a cottage kitchen. Think light-coloured Nordic influences rather than the dark, lacquered stains from decades past.
3. TWO-TONE There’s no rule that says all cabinets have to be same. Double down on the grey trend by painting the lowers charcoal and the uppers a pale grey to make your ceilings look higher. Or experiment with colour by pairing a bold-hued island with natural wood cabinets.
2. GREY Grey cabinets are great for kitchens because they’re neutral but add the kind of visual interest that you
Choosing one of these stylish options will add character to your kitchen in a way that white cabinets alone can’t.
The three types of lighting you should have in your home Most design experts agree that the key to good lighting is having multiple layers of light that complement each other and fulfill different roles in the space. In general, homes require three basic types of lighting: 1. Ambient lighting. A room’s main source of lighting, often provided by chandeliers, pendant lighting or ceiling-mount lights. This layer sets the overall tone of the room, but it should only be the starting point of your lighting design. 2. Task lighting. A type of lighting that illuminates areas where you need extra brightness for performing specific tasks, such as reading, cooking or working at a computer. For instance, you could install a hanging light fixture over the kitchen sink or install a lamp next to your preferred reading chair. 3. Accent lighting. Lighting used to highlight unique architectural features or certain objects, such as paintings, sculptures, decorative accessories or antique collectibles. Accent lighting should be concealed as much as possible since its purpose is to illuminate without being too obvious. Using different types of lighting in each room allows you to change the intensity of the light according to how you’re using the space at the time and keeps you from relying on a single overhead light that may be too bright or create a lot of shadows.
Interior designer vs. interior decorator: what’s the difference? You’ve probably heard the terms interior designer and interior decorator used interchangeably. However, they actually describe two different but similar professions. Interior designers complete two- or four-year degree programs that involve studying subjects like colour theory, architecture, computer-aided design and spatial planning. They work with architects and contractors to plan and renovate spaces and can be involved in every step of the remodelling process, from drawing up floor plans to adding the final touches. Interior decorators focus on esthetics. They help transform spaces that are already built by making recommendations about paint colours, furniture styles, lighting and accessories. They’re not required to complete professional training (though many decorators do), and they usually work directly with businesses and homeowners. SHOULD I HIRE A DESIGNER OR A DECORATOR? If you need help with designs during a renovation, it’s best to go with an interior designer. They’ll help you create a space that serves your specific needs and aligns with your particular tastes. However, if you’re mainly looking to update the appearance of a space, a decorator can help you achieve a whole new look by rearranging and redecorating. In the end, what matters most is not the job title, but the skills of the designer or decorator in question. Choose a company or professional with a reputation for high-quality designs and expertise in the type of work you’re looking for.
How to organize your bedroom for better sleep If you have trouble winding down at night, your bedroom may be part of the problem. Here are four tips on how to organize your bedroom to achieve optimal sleep. 1. Invest in your bed. Don’t skimp when it comes to the quality of your mattress — your comfort directly affects the quality of your sleep. If your
mattress is over seven years old, shows signs of wear or simply doesn’t feel comfortable, it’s time to invest in a new one. You should also select quality bedding; choose sheets with high thread counts made from materials like Egyptian cotton or satin. 2. Pay attention to lighting. Darkness is vital for allowing your body to go into sleep mode. Make sure your curtains and blinds adequately block out natural light (buy blackout curtains if necessary) and choose light bulbs with lower wattages. 3. Get rid of clutter. A cluttered bedroom can create anxiousness so it’s therefore best to keep your room well organized and accessories to a minimum. Don’t forget that your bed should be the focal point of the room. 4. Limit electronics. Electronic screens emit a blue light that can keep you awake. Avoid placing a TV in your bedroom and consider charging your phone in a closed drawer when trying to sleep.

One final tip: if you regularly struggle with sleep, think about getting an air purifier for your bedroom. Not only do they make it easier to breathe, but they also create white noise that blocks out disruptive sounds.

WHAT IS PASSIVE INCOME? Passive income refers to any sort of money you earn without actually having a hand in the day-to-day operations of its source, which, in this case, is the rental property. To get the most out of your investment, you need to understand how to keep your property running smoothly.
is that the space needs to be carefully overseen (preferably by you). The last thing you want is to incur unnecessary costs that will cut into your profit. So while rental property is a fantastic investment for any would-be homeowner, be ready to put in some effort when it comes to the maintenance and management of your new building.
