Creating Monuments of All Kinds STORY & PHOTOS: CINDY O. HERMAN

Walk along Lincoln Street, in Shamokin, and you’ll find plenty of monuments to admire. A white brick memorial with panels listing the names of Shamokin and Coal Township veterans “who made the supreme sacrifice.” A red brick structure holding the bell from the town’s historic Eagle Silk Mill. The grey stone monument honoring 9/11 and local first responders. A brick and stone recognition of the restoration of Shamokin’s iconic 99 Steps. All were made by Brian G. Persing Masonry, in Coal Township, and all just for the cost of the materials. “I do it for nothing,” said Persing, 63. “That’s my community (gift). I don’t take a dime on any one of them.” Along with many other monuments, Persing and his five full-time employees can see their work on homes, businesses and churches in the area. It’s a legacy of workmanship that started with Persing’s grandfather, a stone mason from Italy. As a kid, Persing worked for his masonry uncles then attended Northumberland County Vo-Tech School. After working for various contractors he opened his own business, in 1987. At that time there were a dozen or so masons in the area. “Now, I’m the last one,” he said. “I’m it.” Fortunately, he loves his job. “As long as I have my mind I can do this till I’m 80. I can go price work, and as long as I have the guys – I’ve had the same guys for 25 years – I can do this till I die,” he said. “And I love it. I love to see the work when it’s done. I like the before picture and the after picture. I love it.” Persing’s website is loaded with photos of his work. Swimming pool patios, retaining walls, fireplaces, tiled floors, etc. Local high school concession stands, the Shamokin library, baseball dugouts, brick planters donated to the Shamokin High School – his work is everywhere. 6

Shamokin's iconic 99 Steps

One of his biggest projects was an elevator shaft, sidewalks and the concrete steps at Transfiguration of Our Lord Church, in Shamokin. “They were all rotted. Everybody was afraid to do them. I looked at them and I thought, I’m gonna give them a try. I mean, you’re gonna be the hero or the goat,” Persing said. “And we tore them right completely off. And we figured out a way to do them. And they’re beautiful.” He’s quick to praise his workers. “I always pass off credit to them because without them, I’m nothing,” he said. “You’ve got to have good employees.”

FAM I LY

Persing and his wife, have two children. Melissa, married to Mike Garcia, has four sons: Gage, Gavin, Garret and Grady are well-known in Southern Columbia School District for their football and/or wrestling accomplishments. “They’re so humble. That’s the best thing,” Persing said. “You know, for the success that they had, they’re not full of themselves. They’re always helping the little kids. They’re really good.” Marc Persing and his wife, Sarah, have two children, Landon, 7, and Gianna, 5. “She’s the only girl, who we all spoil,” Persing said with a laugh. He calls Landon the Concrete Kid because he loves to help with the masonry business. “He’ll say, ‘Pap, are we pouring concrete today?’” Persing said, shaking his head at how excited Landon gets. “He enjoys that, and I enjoy that. That’s our bond.”

GI VI NG

Linda has saved newspaper clippings showing not just Persing’s masonry work but his philanthropic deeds: Donations to the Moose Christmas party for kids, God’s Chuck Wagon and the Purple Perk, Shamokin High’s restaurant operated by special needs students. He and Linda have bought Christmas presents for children and donated thousands of dollars to buy food for families during the holidays. “There’s a lot of people that can’t go and buy a meal,” Persing said. “I just think that nobody should be hungry at Christmas. So that’s why I do it.”

Board, president of Shamokin High’s basketball booster, vice chairman of the Northumberland County Vo-Tech Board, and president of the Bernie Romanoski Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. He organizes a food drive for the Salvation Army and sponsors the annual Brian Persing Scholarship for two construction students at Northumberland County Vo-Tech. “I always said if I ever hit the lottery, won a million dollars, I would probably give it away,” Persing said. “Seriously. I like to do that. I’m not wealthy by no means, you know. I’ve got to work. But I like to give if I can give. I like to help people.” In September, 2022, Persing underwent chemotherapy and surgery for colon cancer, and is now a survivor. The experience changed him. “I never had patience. I wouldn’t stand in line five minutes, even if they were passing out hundred dollar bills,” he said. “Now, I got the patience of Solomon.” He tries to reconcile why he recovered but a fellow cancer patient didn’t. “I’m lucky to be here,” he said. “I am very grateful. So who knows, maybe it will come back, maybe it won’t. But I’m here now.” He’s here, and his legacy will continue into the future, with both the stone monuments he’s constructed and the monuments to kindness he’s created for hundreds of people. 4 Myths About

Medicare Advantage Getting ready to choose a Medicare plan? Put these misunderstood Medicare Advantage facts to rest. STORY BY: GEISINGER GOLD MEDICARE ADVANTAGE

Shopping for a Medicare plan? You have a lot of options. A Medicare Advantage plan (Part C) is just one of many. Control the confusion by learning the truth behind common myths around Medicare Advantage. Then you can find your best plan — and feel confident with your choice.

Myth 1: Provider networks are limited.

With some Medicare Advantage plans, you can see any provider in any network. Through certain plans, you can generally see any provider you’d like, but you may be charged less if you see a doctor in your health plan’s network. These plans include: • Preferred provider organization (PPO) • Health maintenance organization point-of-service (HMOPOS) • Provider fee-for-service (PFFS) With a health maintenance organization (HMO) plan, your provider network may be defined. If your doctor stops accepting Medicare or leaves the network, you’ll be notified and you can choose a different provider. Want to find out if a doctor or hospital is included in your Medicare Advantage plan’s provider network? You can either check with them directly or visit your health plan’s website. There, you can search for the doctor by name to see if they’re in your covered network.

Myth 2: Referrals are always needed for specialty services.

In most cases, you won’t need a referral to see a specialist with a Medicare Advantage plan. PPO and PFFS plans don’t require one. But you will need a referral if you have an HMO plan or a special needs plans (SNP), except for certain yearly screenings, such as routine mammograms.

Myth 3: Once you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can't switch to a different plan. 8

FEBRUARY 2024 | FOREVER YOUNG

If you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan and find it isn’t meeting your needs, you can switch your plan during one of the several different types of Medicare enrollment periods. Check medicare.gov to make sure you’re ready for the right one. You may be eligible to enroll in or change your Medicare Advantage plan during a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). You can qualify for SEPs due to life events such as losing health insurance coverage, moving to a different state or county or entering a long-term care facility.

Myth 4: Medicare Advantage is only available through the federal government.

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people age 65 and older. • Original Medicare is made up of Medicare Parts A and B, which are provided through the government. • Medicare Part C, known as a Medicare Advantage plan, is offered through health insurance companies. Geisinger Health Plan’s Medicare Advantage plan is called Geisinger Gold. • Medicare Part D prescription plans are also offered through private health insurance companies.

Each part covers different services and comes at different costs.

SPRUCE UP YOUR SPACE

Design at Your Doorstep STORY BY: HEATHER TEMPLE (OWNER, BUDGET BLINDS OF LEWISBURG)

Heather Temple was raised in the Central Susquehanna Valley, but spent the majority of her adult life living in Connecticut. While there, her unconventional career path revolved around operating heavy equipment and driving tractor trailer. Ultimately, the pandemic influenced her decision to move back to Pennsylvania in 2022 to be closer to family. Deciding to pivot her career in a new direction, she explored several franchise opportunities. She set her sights on Budget Blinds for several reasons. They carry exclusive product lines from nationally known brands and as a 20 year customer, Heather was familiar with the quality of their products and impressed with their service model that has kept them growing for 30 years. She decided to join their team and opened in February, 2023. With an eye for design and color, Heather will take all of the guesswork out of choosing the best window treatments for your home. During your free consultation, she will assess your windows, ask questions to determine your design aesthetic, and address any issues you may be having. “Does that bright sunlight make this room too hot in the summer? Are you having problems with glare on the TV? Is there too much light in your bedroom when you’re trying to sleep? Are you getting drafts through these older windows in the winter?” These are some of the questions that Heather may ask during your consultation.

After taking the time to discern what type of window treatment will work, Heather brings the store to your door with samples to hold up in your windows. This helps you decide which style has the design elements and functionality you’re looking for. As you then peruse sample books with a wide array of colors, she will guide you through an elimination process that finds the one that perfectly accentuates your décor. Once those decisions are made, Heather carefully measures your windows and then places your order. Once your shades arrive, she takes care of the installation as well. A one-stop shop! Comfort Food

Classic recipes to cook, share and enjoy

Award-Winning Cornbread Native Americans shared versions of cornbread recipes with early settlers in the 1800s. When it became evident that the more delicate European grains couldn't survive in America, cornbread became a staple while wheat-based breads were relegated to special occasions only. Early cornbread recipes, those up until the Great Depression, even resulted in unusual colors of breads, not the typical yellow we see today. Regional differences in corn resulted in blue cornbread in the southwest and white in the south. This recipe comes out golden. It's simple, but delicious - the ultimate comfort food. Enjoy!

INGREDIENTS

1 - 15oz can whole kernel corn, drained 1 - 14.75oz can cream corn 1/2 cup sour cream 1 cup butter, melted 2 eggs, beaten 1 - 12oz pkg, Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350°. Mix all ingredients well. Pour into a 9”x13” baking dish, you can even use a square dish, just try to keep the size inch-wise similar. Bake for 35-45 mins. It’s done when it’s a little brown on top and a toothpick comes in and out of the center clean.

Italian Chili Chili can be made hundreds of different ways, but this recipe is a stand-out, especially if you combine it with cornbread.

INGREDIENTS

1 lb ground beef 1/2 lb bulk Italian sausage 1 onion, chopped 2 green bell peppers, chopped 1 red bell pepper, chopped 3 cloves of garlic, minced 1 - 28oz can Italian-style diced tomatoes - do not drain 1 15oz can garbanzo beans, rinsed + drained 1 - 15oz can red kidney beans, rinsed + drained 3 Tblsp Worcestershire sauce 2-3 Tblsp chili powder 2 tsp basil 2 tsp oregano salt + pepper to taste (1+ tsps recommended)

14

FEBRUARY FEBRUARY2024 2024| |FOREVER FOREVERYOUNG YOUNG

DIRECTIONS In a large skillet, cook the ground beef, sausage, onion, peppers and garlic until meat is brown and veggies are tender. Drain grease. In a slow cooker (Crock Pot, etc.), combine the meat mixture, undrained tomatoes, beans, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, basil, oregano, salt + pepper. Cover, and cook on LOW for 8+ hours. The longer the better! This chili is even better topped with cheddar and sour cream and served with cornbread. The recipe is very mild. Feel free to amp it up, and make it as spicy as you'd like. The flavor is there! Delizioso!

Frozen Key Lime Pie The tartness of the key lime filling combined with the sweetness of the crust and creaminess creates a balanced and refreshing flavor.

INGREDIENTS CRUST: 2+ cups graham cracker crumbs 1/4 firmly packed, brown sugar 1/2 cup butter, melted PIE: 1 cup heavy whipping cream 1/2 cup white sugar 1 12oz can sweetened condensed milk 3/4 cup key lime juice 1 tsp lime zest 1 pint half-n-half fresh lime wedges (for garnish on top)

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350°. CRUST: In a medium bowl, combine graham cracker crumbs

Senior Dining at it's Finest

+ brown sugar. Stir in melted butter. Press mixture firmly into bottom and up sides of a 10” spring-form pan. Bake 8 minutes. Let crust cool completely. PIE: In large bowl, with an electric mixer at medium speed, beat cream until slightly thickened. Gradually add sugar and condensed milk to combine. Beat in lime juice, zest and half-n-half. Once mixture has reached desired flavor and consistency, gently spread pie filling over cooled crust in pan. Cover and freeze at least 4-6 hours (until firm - it’s worth waiting a little longer). Cut into wedges + garnish with fresh lime slices when serving. Serve cold.

Values-Based Investing STORY BY: BENJAMIN WILHELM CRPC®, AAMS®, CKA® CEO/FINANCIAL ADVISOR AT LOAN OAK FINANCIAL

Investing, we do it all the time. We invest in people. We invest in things that we enjoy doing. We invest in ourselves, in our homes, in our families, and in our communities. We also invest in our future and one of those ways is by investing our money. All these things take an investment of our time. But what is the purpose in all the investing that we do? Ideally, we want to nurture growth, health, strength, beauty, and value. We want good to come out of everything in which we invest. Have you ever considered what your investment portfolio is comprised of? When most people think of investing their money, their primary objective is to make more of it. Profits and risk-adjusted returns are the primary goal. But have you ever considered that much of what we find distasteful and disheartening in our society has been perpetuated by our own investments? This means that we have been profiting from the very things that go directly against what we believe in.

MEDICARE ELIGIBLE?

Do Not Leave Your Choices to Chance STORY BY: 18TH STREET FINANCIAL SERVICES, L.L.P.

“How are we supposed to figure all this stuff out?” That is the typical reaction from clients when I start explaining how Medicare works and the various rules surrounding enrollment periods and coverage options. I get it. Even the “experts” on television and radio are guilty of spreading confusing and inaccurate information on the topic. The good news is that you need not figure it out on your own. In fact, going alone can cost you dearly. For instance, if you fail to enroll at the right time, you could face “late” penalties. If you qualify for assistance programs, but no one ever tells you, you could end up spending more than necessary. If you have serious or chronic conditions, the choices you make when you first sign up could have a lasting impact, for better or worse, on the rest of your life. This is not something you should leave to chance. Unfortunately, too many people do. Everyone seems to have heard of this plan or that one, and if their neighbor/brother/sister/friend likes it, they assume it will be good enough for them. So, they call an 800 number and enroll over the phone

with someone they have never met and may never speak with again. The problem is that by simply signing up with any-old-plan when you first become Medicare eligible, you forfeit rights to other options you might have preferred, had you only known about them. It is smarter to seek professional advice, and to start seeking help a few months before you want the new coverage to start. Finding dependable help is tricky, though. One thing I can say is that you are more likely to find it in person than by calling a toll-free number. Too many agents are simply chomping at the bit to sell you something as quickly as possible. It may be that, by chance, they end up selling you the most appropriate plan for you. But then again, maybe not. So, when looking for guidance, get a few referrals first. No broker should charge you to meet with them. Find someone you feel comfortable with, and who will show you, in person, a range of choices. They should take the time to help you analyze the pros and cons of several good options. That is what I do with my clients, and it is what every Medicare beneficiary deserves.

WALKIE TIPS TO START

Walking

One of the easiest things you can do provides big dividends. You don't need any specialized equipment or gear, just a pair of good shoes and some wide-open spaces. Researchers have confirmed that walking helps lower stress, regulate blood sugar and lower blood pressure. It can also help you control your weight. Even a just a few minutes of walking every day can lead to a noticeable boost in overall health. Do more, and you'll build the needed endurance to go further still. Just remember to consult your doctor before starting. They will have specific recommendations that will help you tailor an exercise regimen to your specific needs and abilities.

START SLOWLY

The temptation may be to lace up and crisscross every sidewalk in your neighborhood. It's important to pace yourself, in particularly early on, so that you don't overdo it. Beginning senior walkers should try five- or ten-minute intervals. You'll see better health and fitness without risking soreness or undue pain. Make sure you have sturdy but comfortable shoes,

since they can be a ready cause of stumbles, falling, strains and stiffness.

INCREASING INTENSITY

Once you've gotten into a regular routine and can walk longer distances without tiring out or breathing too heavily, begin revving it up. Varying your speed and intensity will have a greater impact on heart health and blood pressure problems. Inclines and interval settings on treadmills are a great way to accomplish this goal, but you can also adapt your personal approach out in the real world. Find a slightly sloping hill in your neighborhood or park and circle back around to it often.

KEEP TRACK

Add a step-tracking app to your mobile phone, if it's not already pre-installed. They can be a powerful tool in keeping up with how far you've come - while also serving as an aid in setting reasonable goals for where you'll go next. You might be surprised by how many steps you're taking while participating in everyday activities around the home and office, like dog walking or gardening. Set goals for how far you'll walk taking those organic steps in mind and they might be more easily achieved than you ever imagined. Wearable technology like smart watches can also track your heart rate and other health data that will help as you continue reaching new heights.

You can do it! YOUR COMEBACK IS ALWAYS GREATER THAN THE SETBACK

How Much Do I Really Need? STORY BY: CROSS KANTZ, MS, ACSM CPT, CERTIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER AND NUTRITION COACH, TITAN TACTICAL

Protein is an essential nutrient that we need to obtain from our diet on a consistent basis to support proper tissue growth, enzymes, hormones, and immune system response. The amount of protein that an individual needs to eat varies based on your weight, activity levels, and goals relating to weight loss, muscle growth, and overall health. A quick Google search tells us the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) target set for protein at 0.36 grams per pound of body weight. Let’s use Sally as an example. Sally is 40 years old and weighs 150 pounds, so consuming 0.36 grams per pound of body weight would bring her to a total intake of about 54 grams of protein each day. There’s your answer then! 54 grams of protein each day and she’s all set, right? …Right?? Despite the RDA targets set for protein, there has been an ample amount of evidence suggesting these targets are not optimal for supporting fat loss or muscle growth, two key factors necessary for older adults to support healthy aging and increase overall quality of life. What does the evidence suggest if 0.36 grams of protein per body weight is not enough? Several recent research studies that looked at protein intake – and the relation to muscle growth and fat loss – were part of a larger review article published in 2017 by The International Society of Sports Nutrition titled “International Society of Sports Nutrition Position Stand: protein and exercise.” (In a nutshell, review articles work on summarizing evidence on a certain topic to see how the evidence holds up compared across multiple studies). To summarize these findings, they drew several conclusions on appropriate protein levels: • Your overall daily protein intake should actually fall between a range of 0.7-1.0 grams per pound of ideal 22

FEBRUARY 2024 | FOREVER YOUNG

body weight. For individuals trying to maximize muscle retention while losing weight, it’s possible that even higher levels of protein would be more suitable (which can be counter-intuitive to someone who is restricting calories to lose weight). • When taking into consideration your total daily protein intake based on your ideal body weight, the total amount of protein needed per meal breaks down to about 20-40+ grams of protein per meal (depending upon the number of meals each day). • The quality of protein matters! It’s best to aim for complete sources of protein that contain all the essential amino acids (EAAs), which are basically the building blocks of what makes up protein. Those main sources should come from a balance of meat, fish, eggs, dairy, Greek yogurt, and whey/casein protein powders. If we circle back to our friend, Sally, we can calculate her protein needs based on this research. Sally is 150 pounds, but she wants to lose 10 pounds so her ideal body weight is 140. Her protein range is calculated by: 0.7 x 140 and 1.0 x 140. This means her daily protein intake should be between 100-140 grams of protein. That’s a big difference compared to 54 grams based on the RDA! And I know what you’re thinking… “But that’s too much protein, right!” This is a common question I get from new clients, and it’s understandable. The Standard American Diet is extremely low in protein, high in carbohydrates, and high in fats. So the idea of increasing your protein from about 50 grams to 150 grams a day almost seems impossible at first. But again, it’s about bringing ourselves back into a balanced diet, not overconsuming even more food. More on this later. “Isn’t this much protein bad for my kidneys and bad for my health?” The truth is that high levels of protein have only been found to be problematic for individuals that

have pre-existing kidney issues. (This is why it’s always a good idea to consult your doctor before making big changes to your diet). It turns out there has been no real scientific evidence that suggests that high protein levels are bad for you. Looking specifically at your kidneys, there are zero human trials or studies to this date that demonstrate protein intake being a problem for normal functioning kidneys. “Is eating animal protein unhealthy?” When properly interpreting these studies, it’s not that meat is harmful for you, but rather that high levels of saturated fats and low levels of fiber can be the problem here. This is why I always discuss balancing several sources of protein with clients, including leaner sources of meat, nuts, seeds, and olive oil to get healthier fats and fiber. Basically, what I’m saying is that I don’t think veganism is a vastly superior diet, but I’m also not saying you should go eat ten pounds of bacon. Stop it. If we circle back to the research article then, their findings were that you should consume protein amounts between 0.7-1.0 grams per pound of ideal body weight to maximally stimulate our old friend, Muscle Protein Synthesis (MPS). 1. By maximally stimulating MPS, you are able to keep your muscle mass (lean tissue) while actively trying to lose weight (fat tissue). When you don’t eat enough protein, MPS is in the negative, which results in increased muscle loss, higher levels of hunger, and a slower metabolism. Even if you aren’t trying to lose

weight, MPS will help you to pack on muscle, and we don’t mean like a bulky bodybuilder! 2. By striving to increase MPS by eating close to 1 gram per pound of your ideal body weight in protein, you will quickly find out how much harder it is to overconsume excess carbs and fats. Protein is more filling and satisfying than carbs and fats, it takes longer for your body to digest, and satisfies your dietary needs more completely. One of the most important components to consider when eating a higher amount of protein is to combine it with – you guessed it – exercise. This will give you the most complete impact on your everyday life. The clients I work with all have different goals – weight loss, muscle growth, or general overall health. The ones who try to consume 0.7-1.0 grams of protein per pound are the ones who experience the best results of losing weight, gaining muscle, and moving better! Bumping up your protein intake at first may seem challenging, but with proper preparation and guidance you could be on your way to a healthier and more optimized version of yourself heading into 2024 and beyond! Rules TO BUILD AN ONLINE DATING PROFILE HOW TO WRITE YOUR DATING PROFILE IN 2024

Gone are the days when “aging gracefully” was the only appropriate option for seniors. Baby boomers today are redefining life after 60 and setting an example for future generations. We are pursuing our passions, exploring the world and looking for new relationships of all kinds. These rules will help you take that first step into *gasp* online dating. You'll need a profile and here's how to do it:

DECIDE WHAT KIND OF PERSON YOU’RE LOOKING FOR

Before you even start writing your dating profile, it makes sense to know what you are looking for. This could be as simple as writing down a list of the characteristics that you are looking for in a partner. Or, you could even come up with a name for your mystery man or woman and keep them in your mind when you write your profile. During this phase, it’s also important to give your expectations a reality check. Many of our dating preferences are formed in our 20s and 30s and, as a result, we may still think that we need to find someone physically stunning or wealthy to be happy. The truth is that senior dating requires compromise in both directions. Few men are going to look like George Clooney and few women 24

FEBRUARY 2024 | FOREVER YOUNG

are going to look like Jane Seymour. So, try to focus on characteristics that really make a difference – like personality, character, values, and passions. Once you have a good picture in your mind of the kind of person that you are looking for, get ready to tell your story.

DON’T LIST FACTS, TELL A STORY

The best way to write a dating profile that nobody pays attention to is to list what you like to do, or, even worse, what you are NOT looking for in a partner. The best dating profiles tell a story. They paint a picture of a unique person, with passions, experience and an abundance of personality. Try to write your profile as if you were talking to a friend. Don’t list what you like to do. Tell stories about the places you have been and what they taught you. Get excited about your passions and don’t be afraid to stand out. After 60 years on this planet, you can do better than “I like walks on the beach.”

BE PROUD OF WHO YOU ARE

One of the biggest mistakes that people make when they start dating after 60 is lying about their age or using a misleading picture. Don’t fall into this trap! Hiding who you are hurts you in two important ways.

First, your partner is going to meet you eventually. When they do, they will immediately compare you to your younger doppelgänger. Worse, they will know that you were dishonest, ruining any chance for a good start to your relationship. The second, and perhaps more important, reason that lying hurts your chances is that it prevents you from being proud of who you are. If your partner wants a younger man or woman, and they think that they can find them, no problem! There are plenty of sites for them. But, if they are looking for someone with life experience, passion, honesty and wisdom, they need look no farther than you.

ENGAGE THE READER WITH QUESTIONS & MENTAL IMAGES

Writing a dating profile is no different than writing a poem, an article or a book – you need to catch the reader’s attention and keep it. As you are writing your dating profile, use questions and mental images to keep your reader engaged. Tell stories that hint at mysterious possibilities. Ask questions that your ideal man or woman would find fascinating.

TALK ABOUT YOUR PASSIONS, NOT YOUR HOBBIES

Another common mistake that people make when writing their dating profile is to list the activities that they enjoy without giving any context. Instead of saying that you like hiking, talk about the time that you climbed Machu Picchu and camped under the stars. Some people are afraid to be too bold in their dating profiles. They think that they will turn people away if they don’t conform to what is “normal.” Nothing could be further from the truth! Talk about the experiences that have made your life unique. Be genuine and embrace what makes you a little quirky or different. You may not appeal to everyone, but, you don’t need to. You just need to appeal to someone special, like you.

a friend of the opposite sex to read your profile and give you an honest opinion. You may find out that the things that others find most fascinating about you are things that you never even considered. If you have been out of the dating game for a while, putting yourself out there is a big step. The good news is that there are plenty of tools to make this process easy and fun. All you need to do is take the first step.

DON’T USE CLICHÉS

Is there anyone out there who still says that they like “reading books” and “watching movies?” You’d be surprised! Once you have finished a first draft of your profile, edit it for wishy-washy language and clichés. When you find yourself talking in generalities, look for a specific example, or, even better, a story. Finding one or more clichés in your dating profile is a sure sign that you need to relax and open up about yourself.

HAVE A FRIEND HELP YOU OUT

Writing about yourself is hard. Are you being too humble? Or, are you bragging too much? Are you getting to the heart of who you are? Or, are you saying what you think other people want to hear? This is where a good friend is invaluable. Ask one or more friends what they appreciate most about you. Get

10 QUESTIONS TO ASK w h e n c o n s id e r in g

Getting a Pet 1) Are you set in your ways?

If change isn’t your cup of tea, then you may not be a good candidate. Adopting an animal usually affects a person’s whole daily routine.

2) Have you ever had a pet before?

It’s best if the you're an experienced owner. However, if you are open to a new and rewarding commitment, then first-timers can still make great pet owners.

3) Does the senior have any disabilities or functional limitations? Dogs can be wonderful companions who encourage you to exercise. But dogs can be a challenge for individuals with limited mobility. If taking a dog outside and walking it is too trying, lower-maintenance animals like cats and birds may be preferable.

4) Would a therapeutic or emotional support animal be beneficial?

If you are very infirm or impaired, you may be a candidate for a specially trained therapy dog to help you function both at home and while on outings.

5) What age pet would be best?

A puppy or kitten may not be ideal for you because of the intensive care and training they require. Furthermore, young pets may outlive their owners. It’s important to consider that some animals like birds have especially long life spans. On the other hand, a senior pet may have its own physical limitations and illnesses, but they are usually welltrained already.

7) Is the pet healthy?

It’s important that any pet be examined by a professional prior to adoption. You don’t want to compromise your immune system since some pets carry diseases. Unhealthy pets can be difficult for any senior to handle both emotionally and financially.

8) One pet or two?

While multiple pets can keep each other company, that may not be a good idea for a senior. Two animals may bond with each other rather than with their owner.

9) Are finances an issue?

Pets are a significant long-term financial commitment. A small puppy can rack up more than $810 for food, medical care, toys and grooming just in its first year. A low-maintenance animal like a fish is less expensive, coming in at about $235. Be sure to carefully consider your current budget before taking home any animal.

10) Is there a backup plan in place for the pet?

It isn’t pleasant to think about, but owners must plan for the unexpected for their pets, too. If you had to go to the hospital, spend time in a shortterm rehabilitation facility, or move to a long-term care community, what would happen to your animal(s)? What would happen if you passed away? Our golden years can be very unpredictable, so it’s important to have a contingency plan in place for our furry and feathered friends before an emergency strikes. Without one, beloved animals may wind up back in a shelter.

6) What temperament would be a good fit for you?

It is very important to research different breeds’ characteristics and interact with prospective adoptees to get a feel for their energy levels and personality. Many older people might think they’d do better with a Jack Russell Terrier because it’s a small breed, but they are very, very high energy and require a great deal of effort and commitment. While there are some general truths about specific breeds, every animal is unique. FOREVER YOUNG | FEBRUARY 2024

For You? DOGS

Dogs are by far the most popular pets in the United States. The APPA National Pet Owners Survey says almost 70% of pet owners have a dog. Dogs are the choice of many people because they are affectionate, loyal, protective, helpful, playful and love attention. The downside is that many dogs need a lot of care and exercise. Some dogs are also more likely to trigger allergies. Some of the best breeds for seniors include: Bichon Frise: These small dogs have more grooming needs but don’t shed too much and have moderate energy. Boston Terrier: These dogs are friendly, wellmannered, affectionate, have a lot of energy and are easy to groom. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel: These small dogs are affectionate, easily trained and love being with their owners. English Bulldog: These dogs are low-activity pets, and are shy and quiet, but need regular grooming. French Bulldog: Like their English cousins, they’re quiet and don’t need a lot of exercise, but need grooming.

CATS

Cats come in second with pet owners, according to the APPA survey, at 43%. Cats are more independent and need a little less looking after, but they have their demands, too. Cats need space and a warm lap to occupy. 28

FEBRUARY 2024 | FOREVER YOUNG

Some of the best cat breeds for seniors include: American Bobtail: These cats are affectionate and don’t like to be left alone, bonding with their humans. American Shorthair: These cats are people-oriented and love to cuddle, which makes them a good companion for seniors. Birman: This is an affectionate, gentle and intelligent cat that loves companionship, has a playful side and is low-maintenance. British Shorthair: These fuzzy cats are good-natured and playful as kittens but mellow as they age. Chartreux: They are calm and playful, making them a good match for seniors. FISH Fish are a surprising third most favorite choice for pet owners, with 14.7% saying they have either a freshwater or saltwater fish, according to the APPA survey. Fish are relaxing to watch and care for, making them a great choice for seniors. Fish are very lowmaintenance, requiring only a bowl or a tank. They need only food and a good tank cleaning now and then. The top expense will be the equipment for its living space. Betta, Dwarf Puffer Fish and Goldfish round out the top three with pet owners and are a few of the best low-maintenance fish.

BIRDS

Birds are generally low-maintenance, compared to dogs. This makes them a good option for seniors with mobility issues. The singing, twittering and

talking of birds can be a therapeutic comfort to seniors who are otherwise alone. However, birds can have a long life, so seniors considering birds need to also plan for the pet’s future without them. Canaries, Cockatiels, Lovebirds and Parakeets are to be the top choices among pet owners.

ALTERNATIVE PETS

Rabbits, Hamsters, and Guinea Pigs can have short lifespans or can live as long as dogs and cats. They all require routine care, food, company and protection. Some of these animals may be nocturnal so won’t make as good a companion during the day. Consider whether there are other pets in your household that can be a threat to these small animals.

ROBOTIC PETS

Here’s an unexpected choice for some seniors – robotic pets. For seniors with dementia, robotic pets that look and behave like their live counterparts can be a source of comfort without any maintenance at all. They can be cuddled and can interact with seniors. We found several different options from a company called Perfect Petzzz on Amazon and The Alzheimer's Store (www.alzstore. com) for just under $40 that looked incredibly fuzzy. Some even snore!
