How to celebrate grads despite unique circumstances
Yearbooks are important mementos
Reaching senior year of high school or college is something to celebrate. It means that graduation is on the horizon and another chapter in students' lives will soon come to a close, with a new one likely to begin shortly thereafter. School- and graduation-related traditions abound, from homecoming games to dances to class rings, and it can be difficult to figure out how to spend one's time. While celebrations may look a little different this year due to the pandemic, yearbooks can offer a sense of normalcy for soon-to-be graduates.Seniors, particularly high school seniors, may find that their last year of school is, among many other things, expensive. In addition to college application fees, test prep courses, graduation garb, parties, photographs, and much more, students often weigh the option of purchasing a yearbook and wonder if it's necessary. The yearbook experts at YearbookLife.com say the average cost of a yearbook is around $75 nationwide. Even though yearbooks may be somewhat costly, they can be valuable mementos of time spent in school. Here are various reasons why yearbooks make for important, cherished mementos. A yearbook will serve as a time capsule for trends, interests and newsworthy events that unfolded during students' time in school. • Yearbooks promote a sense of school pride and unity. Families that will have multiple generations attending the same school may share the unity of being apart of one school and can compare yearbooks from various years. • Sections of the yearbook are devoted to student accomplishments and can herald happy, productive days. • Yearbooks promote social interaction, not only when students become part of yearbook production committees, but also when asking classmates to sign their yearbooks. • In the future, yearbooks will present a way to remember old friends' names and can facilitate reconnecting through social media or another avenue. • Reunion committees may use yearbooks as a way to draft reunion party guest lists. • In an era of digital photos and other online media, yearbooks are tangible items that can be easily accessed from time to time. • Yearbooks, in addition to diplomas, are symbols of academic achievement. Students wondering whether to be involved with yearbook design or to purchase a book should consider the many benefits yearbooks offer.

graduation ceremony in the living room or the backyard can ensure graduates don't miss out on their chance to stride across the stage and receive their diploma. Invite a favorite teacher over to give out the diploma or present it yourself while doing your best school principal/president impersonation. This can be
a fun way to add some levity to celebrations and will be a fun memory for grads to look back on in the years to come. Graduation celebrations will be different in 2021, but families can still make the most of their chances to honor grads in these unique circumstances.

Your Life" video montage documenting all the special school-related moments students have had on their way to earning their diplomas and degrees. Parents can share the video with relatives if they still can't gather en masse come graduation season. · Plan a special dinner. Graduation dinners are one tradition that need not fall by the wayside, even if meals might not resemble traditional meals. Families comfortable dining out can book a reservation at the grad's favorite restaurant, while those who prefer to avoid dining out can order takeout from that establishment. But families also can gather and prepare a special meal together. Even if dining at home, everyone can get dressed up and go the extra mile by creating a restaurant-like atmosphere at home. Fête the guest of honor with a toast before the meal, and reserve a special surprise for the graduate that's only revealed during the meal. For example, parents can uncork a special bottle of wine to commemorate college grads who can legally drink. Parents of newly minted high school graduates can present a special video with well wishes from all the relatives who would normally attend the dinner but cannot due to the pandemic. · Organize a ceremony at home. The end of a school year has traditionally been a time of celebration. Students may celebrate because summer vacation has arrived, and families typically gather to celebrate students who have earned their diplomas and degrees. But just as it's compromised many other traditional celebrations, the COVID-19 pandemic is changing how families can safely celebrate graduation. Thanks to the tireless efforts of medical researchers, a handful of COVID-19 vaccinations have been developed and approved since the end of 2020. As more and more people become vaccinated, the world is gradually emerging from the pandemic. However, members of the class of 2021 will likely have to celebrate in unique circumstances. Such celebrations may not be traditional, but they can still be fun. Families may even enjoy finding new and unique ways to celebrate graduation this spring. · Create a school-themed "movie" where grads are the stars. Students' academic careers are filled with milestones, and the emergency of various technologies over the past two decades has made it easier than ever for families to document those milestones. Colleges extending test-optional practices they won't require future applicants to submit test scores with their applications. While some are saying this is a temporary revision to the process, other schools are calling it a pilot program for the next few years. Seventy-two percent of colleges and universities adopted test-optional policies for the 2021-22 school year, and some schools are now extending that policy for the next one to two years, indicates IvyWise, an educational consulting company. Some of the schools that have suspended the SAT and ACT requirements, at least for the time being, include Cornell University, Penn State, Williams College, Amherst College, Boston College, and Columbia University. Many students have been hit hard by the pandemic and removing testing requirements means they do not have to face another challenge, especially in light of reduced testing capacities and a scarcity of test availability. says a surprising side effect of test-optional amendments at selective universities is that applications have increased. Harvard announced it received more than 57,000 applications for the college class of 2025, which marks a 42 percent increase from the previous year.
Schools have modified admissions requirements in recent months, including removing standardized test scores from the equation. It is always wise to consult with the admissions department of schools to learn if their admissions requirements have been updated.

For upperclassmen, the prospect of graduation is never far from the mind. Graduation marks the culmination of years of hard work and dedication in the classroom. Graduating involves various steps, and testing is part of that equation, particularly for people who are planning on attending colleges, universities or going on to pursue advanced degrees. Standardized test requirements are slowly disappearing from schools' criteria for admissions. The COVID-19 pandemic may have helped accelerate that disappearing act. According to Edmit, an educational financial planning resource, says the concept of a test-optional school is not new. Since the mid2000s, various universities have included test-optional clauses in their admissions policies. This means that students' standardized test scores are not reviewed as part of the college application process. The standardized tests that are normally part of admissions reviews include the SAT , which debuted in 1926, and the ACT, which has been around since 1959. In lieu of COVIDrelated postponements or

Popular graduation traditions
Graduation is steeped in tradition. Come the day of graduation, many gradsto-be might be focusing on receiving their diplomas and then celebrating after the ceremony. The hard work students put in affords them every right to celebrate once they're officially anointed as new grads, but before the party begins it can be fun to reflect on the many traditions associated with graduation ceremonies. Cap and gown Graduation ceremonies simply wouldn't be the same
without caps and gowns. The tradition is anything but new, as Columbia University notes caps and gowns have been linked to academia since the 12th century. Back then, students wore gowns and hoods to emulate the clergy who taught them, but also to stay warm. Many universities dressed their scholars in gowns from the 1700s onward. In 1786, one school, Brown University, even mandated that degree candidates be clad in flowing robes and caps at commencement ceremonies.
Though educators and students may no longer wear caps and gowns when attending class or around campus, the tradition of doing so at commencement ceremonies has endured. Tassel turning The tradition of turning the tassel does not have the lengthy history of the cap and gown, dating back only decades rather than centuries. Graduates typically turn the tassels after everyone has received their degrees during the ceremony. The turn is symbolic of their
transition from student to graduate. Tassels start on the right for high school students and college undergraduates and are then turned to the left, while recipients of master's degrees and doctorates keep their tassels on the left throughout the commencement ceremonies. Tossing caps in the air The tossing of graduation caps in the air is believed to date back more than 100 years. Prior to 1912, graduates of the United States Naval Academy had to serve as midshipmen for
two years before they were commissioned as officers. As a result, they still needed their graduation caps. But beginning with the class of 1912, graduates were automatically commissioned as officers, so they no longer needed their hats. That led the graduates to throw them in the air, thus beginning one of the more fun and photoworthy graduation traditions. "Pomp and Circumstance" This tradition marked by the playing of "Pomp and Circumstance" is rooted in the work of William Shakespeare,
which makes it seem like a perfect fit for graduation ceremonies. Sir Edward Elgar composed "Pomp and Circumstance" in 1901 and the title for the song was inspired by a line in the bard's "Othello." Elgar received an honorary degree from Yale University in 1905, and during that ceremony "Pomp and Circumstance" was played. The song apparently made a strong impression, as it soon began to be played at various commencement ceremonies, a tradition that continues today.
Congratulations! Class of 2021 From everyone at

Tips to Pay for College This Fall they expected, including college tuition and fees (81%), room and board/rent and food (77%), school activities and fees (61%) and books and supplies (57%). Plan and budget accordingly. • Plan to use multiple sources. While 78% of parents put money aside for their child’s education, only 17% said savings could cover the full cost. Be prepared to look at a variety of funding sources. • Maximize financial aid. Complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) every year your child attends college. This important form is the gateway to scholarships, grants, workstudy and federal student loans. If your financial situation has substantially changed since last year, reach out to your school’s financial aid office for help and resources. • Search for scholarships. Grants and scholarships were the top method used to pay for college, ahead of parent savings and income. One easy one to consider is the $1,000 monthly scholarship sweepstakes from College Ave. • Tune up your credit. Of those surveyed, 53% plan to use student loans and 26% plan to use parent loans. Get a copy of your credit report and review your credit score, particularly if you think you may need private student loans in addition to federal.
Reach out to the credit reporting agency to address any errors. Credit history and credit score will impact whether you’re approved for a private student loan, as well as the interest rate. • Encourage your child to contribute. Sixty-nine percent of parents expect their child to help chip in and 52% expect their child to find a job while in college. • Balance other financial commitments. When it comes to balancing other commitments, you can take comfort that you’re not alone. Fifty-eight percent of parents are stressed about balancing their retirement and paying for college. Look at your balance of retirement savings, obligations, and goals to give you a clearer picture on where you stand and what you can afford to contribute towards college. (StatePoint) What does paying for college during life’s “new normal” and current economic climate look like? A new survey highlights parent plans and concerns regarding the upcoming 2021-2022 school year. The College Ave Student Loans survey of parents of undergraduate students conducted by Barnes & Noble College Insights found that of those planning to help their child pay for college, 52% said the pandemic will make it more difficult to pay this fall and 45% said it’s changed how they plan to pay, with 51% using more savings, 45% borrowing more in student loans, and 27% taking out a parent loan. Despite new challenges, the commitment to higher education remains steadfast: 93% of families agree obtaining a college degree is more important than ever. “The pandemic has presented new obstacles, yet as this survey highlights, families are incredibly resilient and determined to help their child obtain a higher education,” says Angela Colatriano, chief marketing officer of College Ave Student Loans. If higher education costs are on the horizon for you, the survey results suggest keeping these tips in mind: • Anticipate spending more. Parents across the board reported college expenses being more than

Framing
One of the classic ways to display a diploma is in a frame. Many businesses offer customized framing where the frame material and the matting can be chosen. Some
Sitting presidents are sought-after commencement speakers Tradition is part and parcel of graduation ceremonies. The playing of "Pomp and Circumstance" and the tossing of graduation caps are two instantly recognizable commencement ceremony traditions. Perhaps no tradition inspires more curiosity than who will deliver the commencement speech. Nobel Prize winners, Hollywood celebrities and noted authors are just some of the recognizable faces that have delivered commencement speeches over the years. The distinguished list of commencement speakers also has its fair share of statesmen, including sitting U.S. presidents, who are embracing the tradition more and more. According to the American Presidency Project, prior to President George H.W. Bush, sitting presidents typically delivered one or two commencement speeches per year. However, George H.W. Bush broke from that tradition in a big way, delivering 23 such speeches in his four years in office. To put that in perspective, President BushÕs predecessor, President Ronald Reagan, gave 11 commencement speeches despite spending eight years in office between 1980 and 1988. Without a doubt, President George H.W. Bush started a trend, as each of his successors from 1993 through 2016 delivered at least 23 commencement speeches during their terms. Notably, each of those successors, including his son, President George W. Bush (23 speeches) as well as President Bill Clinton (24) and President Barack Obama (24), served two terms as president. So in terms of commencement speeches given per year, President George H.W. Bush was in a league of his own.
grads may want to include a photograph of the school or a picture of the graduate above the diploma. Graduates also may want to select a frame and mat that coordinates with school colors.
Create a shadow box
Consider displaying the diploma with other mementos from school. A shadow box is a large, deep display frame that can house items that are thicker than photographs or papers. Items such as a graduation tassel, medal or other award, a varsity jacket patch, or a program from a school performance or awards ceremony can be placed in the shadow box.Create a photo wallDisplay the diploma among other framed photos from school activities. This can elicit a trip down memory lane every time the wall is viewed. Some families may want to display their
diplomas together, especially if multiple family members attended the same school.
Make a work of art
arious online art vendors can turn the diploma into different works of art. For example, engravers can laser engrave the diploma onto a wooden plaque. Then the diploma can be displayed in one location and the wood plaque in another.
Place it under glass
Display the diploma beneath the glass top of a coffee table. When entertaining guests, the diploma can make for a unique conversation piece. A school diploma is worthy of recognition. There are various creative ways to display these documents that reflect the hard work and success of their recipients.

Graduation day is one of the proudest moments in students' academic careers. Diplomas are symbolic of hours spent honing skills and working on assignments and, ultimately, success in the classroom. High school diplomas represent an opportunity to go on to higher learning or a trade, while college degrees indicate young people are ready to begin their professional lives. Many graduates are excited about the prospect of receiving their diplomas. Once in hand, the document can be put on display. The following are some unique ways to showcase diplomas at home or at work.

What's the difference between valedictorians and salutatorians? Being named a valedictorian or salutatorian is a significant achievement. Some students may not fully understand what these titles represent. Every school has its own qualifications, but in general, valedictorians and salutatorians are those individuals who have reached the very highest levels of academic success.
Valedictorian
PrepScholar, a standardized testing preparation company, indicates that the valedictorian is the student who graduates with the highest cumulative grade point average of his or her class and the average of every year's final grades. Grades from advanced placement classes are weighted to account for their rigor and extend extra points toward the GPA. Some schools do not immediately award the title to the highest-ranking student. They may ask
students to apply for review and then consider various factors, including grades, level of academic program, essay submission, and even contribution to school and community life.
Salutatorian
Certain schools may have one salutatorian, while others may have two or more. The college guidance resource Transizion says the salutatorian is usually the individual ranked second in the graduating class. A salutatorian will deliver the salutation, otherwise known as the opening speech of the graduation ceremony. The valedictorian speaks later in the program. High-ranking terms In addition to valedictorian and salutatorian, students also may become familiar with other terminology, including class rank and "cum laude" recognitions.
G1
Class rank refers to a student's GPA in relation to other students in the same grade. Class rank may be an actual number, such as ranked 30 out of 900 students, or a percentage like the top 5 percent of the graduating class. Cum laude is a Latin phrase that means "with praise/honor." Educational institutions use one of three phrases to signify academic degrees that were awarded with honor. The phrases usually are utilized by colleges and universities. Schools have different criteria that must be met for these honors. Summa cum laude is the highest level of distinction, magna cum laude is next and that is followed by cum laude. It is a great honor to be named valedictorian or salutatorian, and it is an honor worth celebrating at graduation and beyond.
What is a gap year? And should grads take one? Members of the class of 2021 have many decisions to make in the coming months. Many high school students enroll in trade schools or colleges after graduation, while college graduates start their careers or begin their pursuit of advanced degrees when their undergrad days draw to a close. But more and more high school and college graduates are taking gap years. According to the American Gap Year Association, a gap year is defined as an experimental semester or full academic year taken between high school and college grads in order to deepen practical, professional and personal awareness. Students often take a break from school as a chance to travel or gain some professional experience. Others use gap years as

a chance for personal exploration before moving on to the next chapter in their lives. Gap years may once have been looked at unfavorably, but they have evolved from such perceptions into opportunities to volunteer abroad, learn a new language in a foreign land, visit one's ancestral homeland, or work as an intern. While many students take gap years prior to entering college, even college graduates can benefit from taking time off after earning their degrees. Gap years are now seen as a way to improve a curriculum vitae and gain relevant work experience in a particular field. The resource GapYear. com indicates employers actively employ people who have taken a gap year, prefering candidates
who have real-world experience. Preparation is necessary before diving head first into a gap year. Students can speak with people who have already taken gap years and ask questions. Graduates should approach the decision of whether or not take a gap year just as they would any other large, lifechanging decision. Experts say that it can take between nine and 12 months to plan a gap-year itinerary. Finances are a consideration, and gap years require ample savings and a carefully constructed budget in order to be transformed from a dream into a reality.Gap years are a growing trend that can help students improve their resumes, see the world and gain invaluable experience.

Graduation guest etiquette
Speak quietly during the ceremony. Graduation ceremonies can last several hours, so it's alright to speak with fellow guests
Safe. Affordable. Reliable.
Congratulations to the CLASS OF 2021
RSVP as soon as possible. Graduates are typically alloted a predetermined number of tickets to their graduation ceremonies. Some may wish to invite more people than their allotment allows, so RSVP as soon as possible after receiving an invitation. If you can't make it, this will open up a spot for grads to invite another loved one in your place.
Don't celebrate too loudly. Graduates' names tend to be read aloud rather quickly, so guests should not celebrate too loudly when their loved one's name is called. Doing so decreases the likelihood that families whose loved one's named is being called immediately after your loved one will hear that name called. Save the loud, lengthy celebrations for after the ceremony. Remain seated during the ceremony. Guests want to see the stage where the graduates are given their degrees, so they should avoid standing during the ceremony. Doing so blocks the views of those behind you. If you

Arrive early. Guests should aim to arrive to the ceremony early, as traffic tends to increase the closer it gets to the start of the ceremony. Arriving early ensures guests will find parking, and it saves them the trouble of asking guests who have already arrived to stand up so they can get to their seats. In addition, late arrivals may make it difficult for fellow guests to hear their loved one's named called.
during the ceremony. But do so quietly and in a way that respects other guests. Guests who adhere to certain etiquette during graduation ceremonies can make sure everyone enjoys the festivities and shows respect for the graduates and their families.

Graduation ceremonies celebrate the accomplishments of students who worked hard to earn their diplomas and degrees. As significant as these ceremonies can be, they also tend to be lengthy, which can make guests uncomfortable and antsy. Etiquette is important at graduation ceremonies, and that goes for graduates as well as their guests. Everyone receiving a degree during a graduation ceremony worked hard to do so, and it's important that guests adhere to proper etiquette so every graduate can enjoy their welldeserved moment in the sun.

10 grad party success tips Graduation season is a bustling time of year. Not only are there many school-sanctioned, graduation-related events to attend, but also job fairs or other opportunities for grads to contend with. Many soon-to-be graduates also host parties of their own. Even though the school lessons may be finished, there is still much to learn and especially as it applies to throwing a successful party that marks the end of school. 1. Set a budget. As with any other party planning, a budget is key to determining the scope and affordability of what you may have in mind. It may dictate whether you're hosting a party at home with some finger foods or hosting something more elaborate. 2. Speak to your graduate. Ask the future graduate what he or she desires of the party. After all, this is about the grad and not necessarily the parents. Does he or she want a party at all? If so, should it be an intimate gathering or a come-one, come-all event? 3. Pick a date carefully. If your town's school has graduation in May or June, you'll be fighting the crowds and competing
with many other people for vendors and services. Think about hosting the graduation party after party season slows down, such as in July. This reduces the likelihood of scheduling conflicts. 4. Send invitations early. The experts at Shutterfly.com advise sending invitations at least a month in advance of the party. This way guests can mark the date and plan accordingly. Formal invitations are fitting for a formal occasion, so skip the casual invite text and use a paper or digital invitation instead. 5. Clue in neighbors. If the idea is to have a party at home, don't leave neighbors in the dark about a large group of people descending on the street. Be courteous and let them know you're expecting crowds and noise. Better yet, invite some neighbors to join in the fun. 6. Provide extra seating. Give guests plenty of places to congregate. Borrow or rent extra tables and chairs to maximize comfort. 7. Consider catering. Whether you host a party at home or at a venue, professional caterers can take a big load off of your

shoulders. Let the experts calculate how much food is needed and then be on call to set up chafing dishes or buffet bars. If your grad prefers fast food, many franchises now offer catering as well. 8. Set up beverage stations. Chances are you'll have a mix of adults and underage guests in attendance. Set up alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverage stations that are clearly marked. Enlist the help of someone to monitor the spirits so that everyone drinks responsibly. 9. Share the memories. A photo board or another way to highlight photos of the graduate can take guests on a trip down memory lane. 10. Plan some activities. Whether it's a DJ, a favorite game like volleyball or a karaoke machine, give guests something to do to stay engaged.Graduation parties are something to think about well in advance of the big day. With planning and followthrough, special occasions can be successful.

By the time students reach graduation day, many have taken hundreds of tests, written scores of essays, worked through thousands of pencils, and made dozens of friends along the way. Such realities only underscore the notion that graduation is worthy of celebration. Though not everyone may be able to gather this year for a blow-out graduation party, thoughtful gifts can show graduates their accomplishments have not gone unnoticed. The following are nine graduation gift ideas. Keepsake blanket: A blanket featuring school colors that's woven with photos or data about the graduate and graduating class makes a great keepsake. Engraved compass: Finding one's new direction will take time, and a symbolic compass with inspirational words can help guide graduates on their future quests. Jewelry: Gift-givers may want to offer to pay for a school ring or can opt for different jewelry. For example, a necklace with the infinity symbol can represent infinite possibilities ahead. Those who collect charms for bracelets or necklaces can be gifted a graduation-themed charm. Dorm room essentials: Graduates going on to college will need a starter pack of essentials. A personalized tote bag filled with toiletries, linens and more will help graduates outfit their dorm rooms in style. Inspirational art: Graduates may want to revamp their bedrooms or decorate new dorm rooms. Framed inspirational verses, sayings or images can make ideal gifts. Blue-blocking eyeglasses: Blue-blocking lenses protect eyes from the harsh effects of blue light emitted from screens, a big benefit in an era when students and professionals spend ample time with their devices. Meal subscription service: In addition to gifting a cooking appliance like a slow cooker or air fryer, giving grads a subscription to a meal delivery service may help them transition to life without mom's cooking or the dining hall.¥ Streaming service: Graduates can benefit from any number of streaming television and movie services to stay entertained while commuting or relaxing around the dorm with friends. Luggage: Whether students intend to take a gap year before college or enjoy a summer break before looking for their first job out of school, young adults will always get use out of a set of luggage or a carry-on bag.Gifts for grads evolve throughout the years, but many gifts have withstood the test of time.

Productive ways to spend the summer after graduation
the daily item SENIOR SALUTE | SATURDAY, may 29, 2021
Graduation is a momentous day in the lives of college students. After years of schooling that dates all the way back to preschool or kindergarten, newly minted college graduates are finally ready to begin their professional lives. That can be a scary prospect for some students, especially those who graduate without jobs lined up. The summer after graduating from college can be a time like no other in the lives of new graduates. It can be easy to grow dejected as weeks or months go by without receiving a job offer. But spending the summer after graduation as productively as possible can help graduates overcome any dejection they might feel and increase their chances of landing a job. Contact career services offices at your alma mater. Career services offices can help recent graduates as they look for their first jobs out of college. Such offices may have access to job and internship opportunities that grads do not. In addition, they may coach grads on interviewing techniques and on ways to stand out in crowded job markets. Seek internships. If part- or full-time employment is proving elusive, don't be afraid to seek and ultimately accept internships, which can provide a way for grads to get their foot in the doors in certain industries. Summer internships may already be filled, so scour job boards for fall or winter internships. Start networking. Students who interned
can get in touch with their past supervisors or mentors and find out if the company is hiring. Such people may be more inclined to bring someone with direct experience onboard and even if that experience was brief and unpaid. In addition, grads can connect with adjunct professors who work in their desired fields. When job hunting, don't get pigeon-holed by your major. Just because a student graduates with a particular degree does not mean he or she needs to look for work in that field. In fact, many companies may prefer entry-level applicants with degrees that are not specific to their industries so their new hires are blank slates who can be easily trained. Attend job fairs. While other graduates may be taking the summer off, enterprising grads looking for work should attend as many job fairs as possible. Graduates likely won't leave job fairs with employment offers in hand, but job fairs are a great way for grads to meet hiring managers and submit their resumes to potential employers. Customize a resume for every job. Be sure the curriculum vitae is not static. Write and refine resumes for each job you apply for, mildly tweaking the wording or accomplishments to address the key phrases used in the job listing. It can be tempting for recent college grads to spend the summers after graduation relaxing, but those who spend that time productively may lands jobs more quickly than those who do not.
Make good use of your final days as a student as graduation nears
from Graduation is the culmination of a lengthy journey students take in pursuit of their academic and professional goals. As graduation day draws near, it can be tempting for students to take their foot off the gas and spend their time having fun with their fellow students before everyone goes their separate ways. Such an attitude can derail years of hard work. Though the temptation of celebrating with friends may be hard to resist, the following are some ways prospective graduates can stay on course as graduation day draws near. Maintain your academic focus. It can be easy to get caught up in upcoming celebrations and the next chapter in your life, but students should stay the academic course until their final day in the classroom. Keeping grades up is important, as no one wants to put graduation at risk when it is so close . Familiarize yourself with your school's guidance office. Guidance counselors often provide information on coursework and future schooling options, but they can guide you in other ways as well. Some guidance offices double as career placement services, helping students prepare resumes, cover letters and portfolios. Some also help students with career assesments that can guide them as they look to begin their careers as professionals.
Gather some references. The organizers behind the Sales Innovation Expo, a professional networking gathering, indicate that 85 percent of jobs are filled through networking. Begin talking with all of the people you can, particularly during internships or volunteer opportunities. Contact trusted confidantes, be it current or former supervisors and professors, to serve as references. Have an idea of your next steps. It's not necessary to have everything mapped out just yet, but you should have a good idea of whether you're going on to more schooling, taking a vocational career
tract, entering the workforce, or even taking some time to travel. Create a road map on paper showing where you want to be and when. Plan for some downtime. After all of this hard work and dedication, set some time aside after the graduation celebration to recharge your batteries. Some time off can help you focus on the future when you're rested and ready to approach new goals. Taking certain steps leading up to graduation can help you focus more readily on the future.
Congratulations to the Class of 2021 at Northumberland Christian School Thank you for all your hard work ... God Bless your Friends at Bingamon & Son Lumber!

Tips for grad party planners
CLASS OF 2021
Graduation is a milestone moment worthy of celebration. Whether newly minted graduates will be pursuing further education after donning their caps and gowns or embarking on their lives as professionals, come commencement season, graduates and their families should pause to celebrate and recognize the hard work it took for grads to earn their degrees. Graduation parties provide perfect opportunities for grads to unwind and celebrate their achievements. People tasked with planning such festivities can heed the following tips to make sure the party is one grads won't soon forget. Personalize the affair. Much like birthday parties, graduation parties are celebrating a particular guest of honor. As a result, planners should not hesitate to personalize graduation parties so they reflect the grad who's being honored. If the guest of honor just earned his or her law degree, order a cake in the shape of Lady Justice. Planners tasked with honoring college grads on their way to medical school can ask guests to don scrubs or white coats. Such personal touches can add fun to the festivities while still honoring the new grad. Ask grads before devising the guest list. Since the day is all about the recent graduate,
Southern Columbia Area High School let him or her provide input about the guest list. Some grads may be uncomfortable serving as the focal point of a large soiree, while others may prefer family gatherings or less formal affairs with only friends. The goal of the party is to celebrate the new graduate, so make sure they're comfortable with who is in attendance. If grads choose a friend-heavy guest list, plan a dinner out with family on another night. Invite teachers. Some graduates form strong bonds with teachers who helped them get through difficult coursework or provided invaluable advice during their academic careers. Make sure these people, who may include teachers past and

Speak with other parents/ planners. Graduation season is a social time of year. Planners and parents can speak with one another to ensure that parties are not scheduled on the same day. This allows all graduates to enjoy their moment in the sun and ensures friends won't miss the chance to celebrate one another's accomplishments. Planners and parents can even coordinate parties together if graduates express a desire to do so.

Guide to graduation dinner success
Decide on a date Graduation ceremonies tend to take place within a relatively small window. That means that you'll be competing with neighbors for the same restaurants and other resources. The adage that the early bird gets the worm is never more true than when booking a vendor around graduation time, particularly a local restaurant. While your first choice may be the graduation date, have one or two other options, particularly if you have your mind set on a popular restaurant. Consider an early or late meal Traditional dinner time in North America falls between 5 and 8 p.m., and will vary based on work and extracurricular schedules. An early or late meal may make it easier to book a table or tables at a restaurant that is typically filled during peak dinner hours. However, considering a graduation dinner may include people from outside the household, choosing a meal time that will be convenient for all should be a priority. Opt for a catered affair If booking a restaurant is proving difficult due to local restrictions regarding in person dining or other obstacles, then catering a dinner at home may be a smart option. Speak with a favorite restaurant or caterer well in advance of the proposed party date and host a catered event at home. Buffets often are
convenient because there will be different foods that meet a variety dietary needs. Stagger invitation times Flexibility and ingenuity have become hallmarks of the past year or more. Concerns about coronavirus transmission may still be making headlines around graduation time, and graduation dinner hosts should keep this in mind. For home or backyard parties, keep guest lists on
the small side and divide them according to specific time slots to maintain social distancing and reduce the number of people who will be mingling at one time. Graduation dinners are a time to celebrate new graduates. With ample planning, they can be joyous occasions during a busy time of year.

Graduation is a milestone worthy of celebration. Even though many graduates and their families may have to make some concessions this year to maintain public health, that doesn't mean that celebrations must cease. Special dinners are a great way to honor newly minted graduates.Planning a graduation dinner can take some resourcefulness, especially in 2021. With these tips, the process will go much more smoothly.

Gift ideas for high school grads
High school graduation is a significant milestone in the lives of teenagers. The moment a teenager receives a high school diploma marks the culmination of years of hard work, and many parents and extended family members reward that hard work with gifts. The transition from high school student to college student or working professional is significant, and various items can help make that transition go as smoothly as possible. Travel gear: Whether it's utilized during road trips with roommates or on those handful of occasions when students come home on holiday breaks, travel gear can make for a useful gift for new high school graduates. A sturdy backpack/duffel bag combo can be ideal. It's great for college students who might not be ready for more expensive luggage, and it can be ideal for high school students taking gap years to do some overseas traveling before enrolling in college. Coffee machine: A pot of fresh coffee can make late-night cram sessions or hours spent typing research papers into the wee hours of the morning more manageable. For students who will be living in crowded dorm rooms,
opt for small coffee machines that don't take up much space, such as those that are traditionally found inside hotel rooms. Television: Parents want to imagine their college-bound teenagers spending hours holed up in the library. But college kids watch plenty of television, too, so a new television can make for a great gift that figures to get ample use. Academic planner: College course loads tend to be considerably more demanding than high school coursework. An academic planner can help new college students manage the rigors of their coursework by encouraging them to plan their days and weeks, ensuring no classes are missed and no assignments go unfinished. Cash: Cash can make a great gift whether a grad is heading off to college or entering the workforce. Cash can help college students pay for their books and help those entering the workforce purchase a reliable car that will help them get around.Gifts for newly minted high school graduates can help them transition to the next phase of their lives, whether that will begin on a college campus or in the workforce.
