Fun and Games

MAKE YOUR WORKOUTS MORE ENJOYABLE—AND EFFECTIVE—WITH FITNESS PARTIES, LUNCHTIME WALKS AND FRIENDLY COMPETITION.

Join the party. Every month, 24 Hour Fitness hosts a series of free Fitness Class Parties—and everyone is invited. “GX24 Fitness Class Parties spotlight some of our most popular classes,” says Stary. “This gives an intro to the class and it’s also fun. The instructor will teach something brand-new to the class, have a fun theme or offer giveaways—or all of the above.” For more info, visit 24hourfitness.com/classes/gx24parties.

Take a scenic jog around Annabel Lake.

Seek strength in numbers. Build your community—and accountability—by becoming a regular at 24 Hour Fitness classes (check out offerings such as Zumba and World of Dance U-Jam) or Equinox (try Cycle Beats or Hip-Hop). If you are more into hitting the nature trails, sign up for the Run Club at Athleta. Make lunch active time. Recruit co-workers for walks around Annabel Lake and games of volleyball and bocce ball at Bishop Ranch—and never suffer that sad desk lunch again. Share your success. Use fitness apps to track workouts or share achievements with pals; you can even challenge them to friendly competition. “It helps grow the community of people who are supporting you and holding you accountable,” says Stary. “Inevitably, it just makes it that much more fun every day. The 24GO personalized fitness app can provide reminders about your [planned workout sessions] to help keep you on track as well as hundreds of workouts for those times when you can’t get to the gym.” Focus on goals and rewards. “You might say, ‘My goal this month is to hit four to five classes or workouts a week, and if I do that I’m buying myself something that’s going to help support those goals,’ ” says Stary. “You’re rewarding yourself for the great work that you did and having fun in a brand-new pair of yoga tights. “Fun really comes from the individual person,” she adds. “For a lot of our members, it’s the community aspect and working out with other people.”

If exercise feels like a chore, work less and play more by choosing activities you enjoy. “We always encourage members to take as many different classes as they can to find something that connects with them,” says Micki Stary, senior director of Group X at 24 Hour Fitness. “Once they find that activity, they’re going to go more often and see those great changes—physically or mentally—that [occur] due to exercise.” Read on for some tips to add fun to your fitness routine.

NEXT-LEVEL SKIN CARE

BEAUTY TREATMENTS—BOTH CUTTING-EDGE AND CENTURIES-OLD—CAN BRING NEW LIFE TO YOUR SKIN.

|

You can also reinvigorate your skin through innovative treatments such as those offered at LaserAway, the nation’s leading laser skin-care provider. Although laser hair removal is the most popular service at the City Center location, LaserAway provides other highly advanced cosmetic treatments, including Clear + Brilliant®—a facial rejuvenation procedure done using a noninvasive dioxide laser in about 30 minutes. According to Will Kirby, D.O., from LaserAway’s medical team, this service is “great for people who have texture changes [like] acne scarring or fine lines, [or] for people with premature aging of the skin and sun-damaged skin.” And if you still have baby-soft skin, Dr. Kirby says Clear + Brilliant will help it stay that way, with very little downtime posttreatment. If you prefer more alternative medicine, consider the time-tested treatments at Modern Acupuncture. Although acupuncture is often used to ease pain and other ailments, the services offered at Modern Acupuncture can also combat aging and relieve stress stored in facial muscles by stimulating the skin’s self-repair process. Additionally, acupuncture increases blood flow and activates collagen production, creating noticeable results after just a few treatments. The holistic practice has an added relaxation benefit. According to Leah Chischilly, manager of clinical operations, a cosmetic acupuncture treatment “can help reduce stress and improve your health overall.” Modern Acupuncture will create a customized plan for you that can also target other areas of the body. Thinking about getting acupuncture from head to toe? That, Chischilly proclaims, “is a beauty treatment with a wellness bonus.”

As clichéd as it may sound, beauty truly does come from within— especially when it comes to your skin. Unhealthy habits and imbalances can show physically, along with damage from age and the sun. Conversely, when you’re in top form, your skin has that unmistakable glow. Luckily, no matter your state of wellness, there are plenty of ways to take your skin to the next level, including science-based creams and serums from noted skin-care company Rodan + Fields.

Elevated Entertaining PRO TIPS FOR CRAFTING THE PERFECT HOME PARTY.

There’s nothing better than gathering with friends for a few drinks, but bringing the festivities home can sometimes feel a bit daunting. Here, Gunjan Madan—frequent house-party host and owner of wine, beer and chai bar Social-Affair—offers tips to make your next soiree a slam dunk. THE VIBE While Madan doesn’t believe in hard-and-fast rules for social gatherings, there are a few ways she makes her home inviting, and the key is letting go of a little control. “You’ve got to feel the vibe of the party and be in the moment. Don’t start doing things because someone defined it for you,” she says. “You’ll actually enjoy the party, and guests can feel that energy.” Looking for the perfect party tunes? Madan turns to music without lyrics so guests aren’t transported out of the moment. Bridging two different friend groups? Consider old-school board games that’ll get people off their phones and interacting, which Madan says have been a surprise hit at Social-Affair. THE DRINKS Try setting your party apart with a signature cocktail. Take inspiration from The Slanted Door bar director Erik Adkins, and wow guests with a twist on a classic concoction, such as his Tropical Gin Fizz (see opposite page). Ingredients from Bay Area producers like Small Hand Foods lend the cocktail a little locally sourced love, as do citrus and garnishes such as mint—which stay in season during the winter months—available at the San Ramon Farmers Market.

4 RANCH

THE BARWARE In addition to making sure you have all of the ingredients for specialty cocktails, stocking the right bar tools and glassware can elevate a casual get-together into an outstanding event. If your home bar is nonexistent, both Williams Sonoma and West Elm carry starter bar tool sets: Make sure you have a jigger (measure), shaker and strainer at the very minimum. You’ll also need the right glassware to make your cocktail sing. Consider investing in vintage-etched coup glasses for an elegant upgrade that lends itself to different drinks, or mix and match with champagne flutes, wine glasses or highball glasses to give your gathering a more relaxed feel. THE FOOD Consider an easy cheese or charcuterie plate or two, and nail the execution by embracing imperfection. At Social-Affair, each cheese platter follows a theme (European, dessert), but then all bets are off—an approach you too can take at home. “How the cheeseboard looks depends on the character of the person,” says Madan. “Just have fun.”

Video game developer and artist Glen Schofield exhibits his creative passions on and off the screen.

Going the Distance

When Striking Distance Studios CEO Glen Schofield got his start in the video game industry 30 years ago, things were a little different. “I was there before the original PlayStation, working on Super Nintendo and Genesis games,” says Schofield, reflecting on his entry into the field as a freelance artist. “In the beginning, I only had four shades of gray to work with; today, it’s unlimited. I’ve seen everything grow. I made my first game with one engineer. My last game had 350 people working on it.” In the past three decades, video games have become a massive industry, with $152 billion in revenue projected for 2019. Schofield has been a big part of that growth, co-founding Sledgehammer Games and helping to develop award-winning “Call of Duty” and “Dead Space” titles, among others. Now, Schofield is heading up Striking Distance Studios, a new state-of-the-art flagship game development studio that will open at Bishop Ranch in early 2020. “There are so many amenities at Bishop Ranch, and we are hiring a lot of creative and technological talent from around here who are thrilled they don’t have an awful commute anymore,” says Schofield, who has lived with his wife and three children in San Ramon for 14 years. “It’s a great area for families, and that’s been a big selling point for a lot of people.” In addition to game development, Schofield still pursues his passion for painting and drawing. He earned his BFA from the Pratt Institute in New York City and worked as an illustrator before making the transition to video games. Among his recent artistic efforts, Schofield created the poster for the Art and Wind Festival in 2018 and has exhibited his work in San Ramon’s City Hall. “I bring my drawing pad with me everywhere,” he says. “I love the balance I have with painting and making video games, as that is also art.”

FROM TECHY SPORT COATS TO MULTICOLORED-STRIPED SWEATERS, DOG APPAREL GOES BEYOND THE BASICS. High fashion isn’t just for humans; every dog has his/ her day when it comes to chic apparel, too. Bobby Wise, owner and founder of pet boutique George, shares his approach to designing for dogs. Size matters. “Like us, dogs come in so many shapes and sizes,” says Wise. “It can be tricky finding the right fit for every critter.” George carries a wide range of sizes to give dogs (and dog owners) optimal options. Balance practicality with aesthetic appeal. “The whole reason we started George was to bring interesting, elevated design to all things dog. There are a lot of people out there who have great style and want their animals to reflect that sensibility,” says Wise. He looks to contemporary fashion trends for inspiration and seeks out new technical fabrics for his canine creations. Wearability is key. “We’re not big on dresses or pinafores, or things like that,” Wise says. “I appreciate whimsy, but it’s not part of George’s design aesthetic. We do offer some Halloween costumes and seasonal apparel.” Above all, Wise likes seeing customers and their furry friends shopping together at George’s City Center location. “People love spending time with their animals. It’s really special when you get to bring your animal into a fun space and buy something unique.” TAG IMAGES OF YOUR FASHIONABLE FURRY FRIENDS WITH #CITYCENTERBR AND MAKE THEM SOCIAL MEDIA STARS.

Gio Gelati crafts special items such as gelato-filled baked goods in addition to its classic treats.

FLAVORS OF LOVE

CREATIVITY MEETS CHEMISTRY AT GIO GELATI. Authentic gelato should be more than a seasonal treat. That’s why the Gio Gelati team is thrilled to be located in the Golden State (in addition to San Ramon, the Gio flagship is in San Francisco). “California allows you to use fresh products [yearround], and you can recognize that in the gelato,” says manager Guido Mastropaolo. “There are some classics we’re going to do all year long, but we very much reference the product of the season.” Gio plans to offer 18 flavors at any given time, including such favorites as stracciatella, crema and pistachio, along with coffee-based options and seasonal fruit gelatos. Gelato chef Patrizia Pasqualetti—a third-generation gelato maker from Italy— uses a vertical mixer to blend the gelato ingredients all at once, rather than creating a base first and then adding the flavor component. “It is more time-consuming, more expensive, but the results are significantly different,” says Mastropaolo. Gio’s goal is to maximize the taste of the original ingredient in the gelato. “It’s a mix between creativity and chemistry,” says Mastropaolo. “You have to be very precise, but creative enough to find the right mix of consistency, smell, flavor and color.”

SCOTT AND CATHERINE HELLER OF HELLER JEWELERS WANT TO HELP THEIR CUSTOMERS MAKE MEMORIES THAT LAST A LIFETIME.

Heller Jewelers has been long been a destination for jewelry customers seeking an extensive selection of quality diamonds, gemstones or luxury timepieces. But most importantly, what newlyweds, couples and gift shoppers have experienced during the company’s 23 years in operation is an unparalleled level of informed, caring and genuine service. That commitment to service comes naturally to owners Scott and Catherine Heller. As Scott says, “We give our customers the time, attention and respect they deserve.” Also key to Heller Jewelers’ success is their dedication to listening to their customers. “It’s pretty simple. We prioritize listening, getting to know each individual on a personal basis, understanding their lifestyles, their tastes and the jewelry dreams they’ve envisioned,” says Scott. At Heller Jewelers, customers will find exquisite rare diamonds and gemstones, along with styles and designs that range from simple elegance to big and bold. “There are no rules for how beauty is defined,” says Catherine. “For some it’s a classic or traditional style, and for others it’s a look that’s way out there on the edge.” This winter, Heller Jewelers is moving from its current location off Crow Canyon Place to City Center Bishop Ranch. The motivation for the move goes back to Heller’s focus on customer service. “Our No. 1 goal is to provide our customers with the absolute best in-store shopping experience imaginable, and the new store helps us accomplish this,” says Scott. The City Center store will be twice the size, providing more space to display stunning new jewelry designs and allowing customers additional room to browse, relax and enjoy the surroundings. There will also be a new Rolex on-site repair

SIGNIFICANT PIECES

No matter your tastes, there are five key pieces to have in your jewelry box, according to Scott Heller. “You can wear them anywhere—dressed up or dressed down,” he says. “And from there, we can start having fun and building a collection.” wedding ring luxury timepiece diamond studs diamond solitaire necklace tennis bracelet

center, complete with a viewing area so customers can see the watchmakers at work. As Heller Jewelers enters a new era at City Center Bishop Ranch, the Hellers welcome the opportunity to serve a whole new generation of jewelry customers. “We’re seeing a lot of the kids of the families we’ve served over the years come into the store for their engagement rings or for a really nice timepiece,” says Catherine. “It’s a neat feeling; it’s like you’ve grown up with them.” The relationships that the Hellers have built with clients extend beyond the showroom floor, too. The couple is committed to supporting community organizations—particularly charities focused on children, education or animals, such as the Taylor Family Foundation and Dan Ashley’s Rock the CASA—by donating jewelry or store gift cards for silent auctions. “Without the community, I wouldn’t have a business,” says Scott. “If you’re in business, you have to be willing to give back—to support the community that supports you.” And that sense of connection explains what’s really different about Heller Jewelers. The heartfelt support, the personalized shopping experience, and the time and attention given to each person ... it feels a lot like family. GIA diamond graduate and watch expert Brandon Heller—one of Scott and Catherine’s three sons—also works at Heller Jewelers and echoes that familial vibe. “We try to welcome people here as if it’s our home—an extension of ourselves,” he says. “You’re not dealing with a faceless organization. You’re working with family.”

Force for Change MATT ARMANINO ON STAYING AHEAD OF THE CURVE IN THE RAPIDLY EVOLVING WORLD OF BUSINESS CONSULTING. As Armanino—a national accounting and businessconsulting firm headquartered at Bishop Ranch— celebrates its 50-year anniversary, CEO Matt Armanino is looking toward the company’s wide-open future. Matt’s father, Andy Armanino Sr., co-founded the company in 1969 with the dream of  “providing a different kind of firm in terms of client experience and work environment,” says Matt. Matt’s older brother, Andy Jr., then took the helm for years, helping to vault the company to its position as one of the country’s top 25 public accounting firms before he retired; Matt was named CEO and managing partner on Jan. 1, 2019. “I feel very lucky to have such close family,” says Matt, who cites his father, brother and wife, Alexa (with whom he has two sons), as his biggest influences. Here, Matt shares his thoughts on the impact of technology, the ingredients of a strong corporate culture and where Armanino goes from here. Q: HOW DO YOU SEE ARMANINO CONTINUING TO GROW?

Our secret to success is that we have a great ability to embrace change. I think it’s unique because many successful organizations focus on how they preserve the status quo; those who are resistant to change will struggle to take advantage of new opportunities and become less relevant over time. I am very excited about our future because we are really leaning into these new opportunities. Technology is a huge part of our strategy. We have one of the biggest IT consulting practices for a firm our size [over 300 technology consultants] and are one of Microsoft’s largest partners. My goal is to lead from the front as we seamlessly integrate technology into the services we offer and provide an unparalleled level of tech expertise to our clients. Q: YOU RECENTLY LAUNCHED THE AI LAB TO BETTER LEVERAGE THAT TECHNOLOGY. WHAT LED TO THIS INITIATIVE?

AI is probably going to be one of the significant disruptive technologies of our lifetime. The AI Lab is establishing Armanino as a thought leader in the space and has us partnering with clients on use cases

where AI can be combined with the human workforce in ways that make humans faster, more efficient and more productive. I’m excited by the work we are doing with clients in the AI Lab, and I think it’s a way for us to use shared learnings and best practices that we see in the marketplace, as well as develop our own expertise. Q: WHY DO YOU THINK ARMANINO IS FREQUENTLY NAMED A “BEST PLACE TO WORK”?

We have the greatest team of people who are drawn to Armanino for our unique culture that focuses on empowering wickedly smart people and giving them a platform to share their ideas and pursue their passions. It’s an environment that allows people to advance their careers at their own pace and take a very team-based, collaborative approach. Q: WHY IS THE TRI-VALLEY AN INSPIRING PLACE, BOTH PROFESSIONALLY AND PERSONALLY?

I’ve lived in San Ramon and Danville for years; this is an incredible region in which to live and work. From a living standpoint, there is an abundance of outdoor activities that we love as a family and great weather all year long. There is also an engaged and nurturing community, along with terrific education and employment opportunities. This whole area is a hub of innovation, collaboration and growth-focused energy. Some of the Bay Area’s best tech firms are based here, which is helping drive that community of folks who are energized by innovation and transformational thinking. Q: WHAT MIGHT PEOPLE BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?

I never thought I would work at Armanino. I’m the youngest of four. My brother, Andy, is the oldest, and we have two sisters. My brother went into this business, and I started my career as a lawyer before going into the technology industry. I came here a little over a decade ago and it was the greatest career decision of my life. Sometimes people assume because of my last name that this is where I have been my whole career, but it was the opposite. I never thought it would happen, but I am incredibly thankful that it did.

or years, the Tri-Valley was considered a sleepy cluster of communities for workers commuting to San Francisco and Silicon Valley. But the region— comprised of Danville, Dublin, Livermore, Pleasanton and San Ramon—is now a hot spot in its own right.

Families are flocking to the region, attracted not only by the booming job market, but also the relatively affordable houses, quality of life and highly rated school districts. Numerous businesses are opening offices here or expanding into the area, especially with the continued development of San Ramon’s Bishop Ranch and City Center Bishop Ranch. As an added bonus, all this growth has invigorated the dining and retail scene. From outdoor recreation and cultural opportunities to high-end shopping and sustainable dining, here are 25 reasons why the Tri-Valley is an inspiring place to live, work and play.

2020 EDITION 13

Tech titans aren’t just in Silicon Valley anymore. The Tri-Valley has transformed into a hotbed of innovation and entrepreneurship, attracting trailblazing business leaders looking to entice the highly educated population living in the area. “There are a lot of talented people in the East Bay, and more companies are starting to realize that,” says Uzair Dada, founder and CEO of demand-generation agency Iron Horse Interactive. Dada moved his offices to Bishop Ranch in 2007 and has noticed an uptick in the number of venture-backed start-ups setting up shop in the area. More than 450 tech firms call the Tri-Valley home, with the area receiving more than $4 billion in venture capital and private equity investment over the last 10 years, according to the 2018 Tri-Valley Rising report. The boom is part of a wider evolution that’s drawn increasing numbers of residents and businesses to the region. Since 2005, the population has gone up 29 percent, with employment growth in the area increasing 35 percent between 2006 and 2016. It’s no surprise that San Ramon was ranked the top city in the state for employment by the 2018 WalletHub study Best & Worst California Cities for Finding a Job. Like Iron Horse, GE Digital has witnessed many of these changes firsthand. The global industrial software and solutions company opened its headquarters in San Ramon in 2012 after realizing the Tri-Valley was close to a strong tech talent pool and aligned industries. “[GE Digital] did a thorough analysis of the region and found that a lot of talent lived in the area already,” says GE Digital’s Mike Dulin, communications. “[The Tri-Valley] is also relatively central and has a lot of amenities nearby that make it attractive for employees.” “Bishop Ranch continues to attract more companies with its A-plus service, modern amenities, and great food,” adds Dada. “I believe companies are going to continue coming here, and it’s going to be better for everybody.”

2. The number of people working remotely full-time in the United States increased 159 percent between THE FLEXIBLE WORK ENVIRONMENTS

2000 and 2017, and the Tri-Valley is no exception. Professionals take advantage of shared office spaces such as WeWork and Regus while Bishop Ranch businesses offer extended Wi-Fi to enable flexible work options and use communication programs to connect employees around the globe.

3. The Tri-Valley is home to one of the best-educated workforces in the Bay Area, with 60 percent of TOP TALENT THRIVES HERE

4. The average home buyer in the area spends less than $900,000, compared to $1.2 million in San THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME

Francisco and $1.1 million in Silicon Valley. To help relieve the housing demand, Sunset Development Company is incorporating residential neighborhoods into Bishop Ranch (see page 26 for more details).

5. The lower real-estate costs extend to businesses, too. Companies that open offices in the Tri-Valley IT’S A PLEASURE DOING BUSINESS

instead of San Francisco can get more bang for their buck: According to Tri-Valley Rising, the average price per square foot for office space is $32.04 in the Tri-Valley but $74.17 in San Francisco; area companies can also take advantage of amenity-rich business parks such as Bishop Ranch.

More and more Bay Area-born retailers and restaurants are branching out here—adding some cosmopolitan sophistication to the region’s pastoral setting. This is especially true at City Center, where 75 percent of the apparel and restaurant tenants have roots in the Bay Area, according to Sunset Development. Noted chef Charles Phan made headlines when he opened The Slanted Door at City Center in early 2019, bringing his inspired Vietnamese food beloved by San Franciscans for 20-plus years to San Ramon. MIXT also got its start in the city, as did Roam Artisan Burgers, Boba Guys, Delarosa and Gio Gelati. George, a pet boutique founded in San Francisco, came to San Ramon in June 2019, drawn to the design of City Center and the welcoming community. “I love going to San Ramon and seeing all of these sweet families walking around with their dogs,” says George owner Bobby Wise. “We are having fun there.” Alys Grace, a well-curated boutique that offers contemporary trends and classic women’s apparel, first opened in Menlo Park in 2008; it now has locations in Los Altos, San Francisco and Corte Madera, in addition to San Ramon. “We consider ourselves a Bay Area brand and company,” says Tiger Bachler, who co-owns Alys Grace with her husband, Phil. “As a small local company, it was important for us to have stores in locations where people can gather and make us part of their regular routines. City Center seems to fit that bill!”

THE FABULOUS FOOD FRONTIER

The Tri-Valley is at the forefront of the sustainable dining trend, with a wealth of health-focused, eco-friendly eateries dedicated to providing farm-fresh, organic fare to diners while lowering their carbon footprint. Many such restaurants can be found at City Center, where foodies can savor California flavors at Mendocino Farms, Roam Artisan Burgers and MIXT. And there’s already buzz building around newcomer Bamboo Sushi. Founded by Kristofor Lofgren, Bamboo Sushi is setting an industry standard as the first certified sustainable sushi restaurant in the world. But what does that mean, exactly? “We use science to make sourcing and business decisions that have a positive impact on this planet,” explains Lofgren. He and his team used scientific data from the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program to help craft the menu; the Marine Stewardship Council audits their supply chain; and Bamboo Sushi joined the James Beard Foundation’s Smart Catch program to ensure they fulfill their commitment. “We feel very connected to the values and importance Californians place on sustainability, and we have been eager to offer them a dining destination where they can enjoy fresh, high-quality and truly sustainable seafood,” says Lofgren. “I’m excited to introduce Bamboo Sushi to the Bay Area while educating the community on our mission of sustainable sourcing from our oceans.” Leslie Silverglide, co-founder and CEO of MIXT, also hoped to bring better dining to the Bay Area and beyond when she opened her fast-casual salad joint in 2006. “We wanted to offer fresh, seasonal food in a fast-casual environment—without sacrificing sustainable business practices,” she says. “We source as many ingredients as possible from local farmers and purveyors, and our menu is seasonally driven. … What we eat impacts the Earth as much as ourselves, so sustainability is at the core of everything we do.”

Welcome Homes

Crowded roadways, air pollution and hours spent in the car are the hallmarks of many workdays in the East Bay. Now imagine an alternative scenario. Instead of a long commute to the office, picture walking or biking to work, stopping off for a gourmet coffee along the way while enjoying the beautifully landscaped surroundings. After work, you meet up with the family for a hike along the Iron Horse Regional Trail or dinner at one of the many quality restaurants nearby. That’s the dream of the Mehran family, founders and owners of Sunset Development Company since 1951. CityWalk Bishop Ranch is envisioned as an integrated community offering shopping, dining, recreation, business and housing in a suburban setting. Today, plans are moving forward to incorporate five distinct residential neighborhoods into Bishop Ranch. Under the guidance of Alex Mehran Sr. and Alex Mehran Jr., Sunset Development—working closely with the city of San Ramon—is bringing much-needed housing to the area as part of General Plan 2035. “Bishop Ranch isn’t just a project, it’s a community,” Alex Mehran Sr. says. “My father left us a rare opportunity to do something that would benefit not just our family, but all of the families and businesses in the San Ramon community. Now, we’re excited to be moving forward with its last piece, which is to introduce residential neighborhoods that complement and enrich what the community has collectively achieved here.” The plans for CityWalk Bishop Ranch call for a series of residential neighborhoods, with 4,500 multifamily homes constructed over the next 25 years. Walkability is a key component of the plan—bringing health benefits and reduced car use—along with a parkway system to connect the neighborhoods and recreation trails. Proximity to City Center Bishop Ranch shops will also enhance the community feel, allowing residents to live and work in one vibrant and welcoming mixed-use district. FOR MORE INFORMATION, VISIT CITYWALKBISHOPRANCH.COM.

OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST KRISTI YAMAGUCHI CHAMPIONS EARLY CHILDHOOD LITERACY.

In 1992, figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi inspired a generation of children with her gold medal–winning performance at the Albertville Olympics. Today, through her local Always Dream Foundation, Yamaguchi encourages kids to dream big by introducing them to the joys of reading. “When I was a kid, the world opened up when [I was reading] a book. It was magical,” says Yamaguchi, who is also a New York Times best-selling children’s author. “Literacy and the love of reading is the foundation for a child’s success in school and in life.” In 2012, the Always Dream Foundation launched Always Reading, an early childhood literacy program for kindergartners at schools in Arizona, Hawaii and the Bay Area, where Yamaguchi grew up; she currently lives in Alamo with her husband, retired NHL player and Olympian Bret Hedican (who is now a color analyst for the San Jose Sharks), and daughters Emma and Keara. “My parents instilled that value of giving back and really being a part of your community,” says Yamaguchi, who started her foundation in 1996 to benefit underserved children. At the beginning of the school year, each kindergartner receives an e-reader, along with a modest collection of print books. The digital platform makes it easy to access a library of high-quality English- and Spanish-language books at home and keep track of title choices and pages read. “It’s all about bridging school to the home and knowing that family engagement is a powerful thing,” says Yamaguchi. Throughout the year, Always Reading provides support to families, while monitoring progress. “We have a book coach who is available whenever [families] have questions,” says Yamaguchi. “We text reminders and strategies on how to create a literacy-rich environment in the home.” Many families report that siblings and parents also develop a love for reading. “Always Reading has a ripple effect on the whole family,” says Yamaguchi. Last year, an Oakland father thanked Always Reading for sparking his son’s interest in becoming an astronaut. “It was one of those goose-bump moments where [I thought], ‘This is what it’s about,’ ” says Yamaguchi. “It’s about showing kids that there is a huge world out there and they can dream big.” FOR MORE INFO ABOUT THE PROGRAM, VISIT ALWAYSDREAM.ORG.

CITY CENTER ON ICE This winter, skate like an Olympian at City Center’s Kristi Yamaguchi Holiday Ice Rink, which is partnering with Yamaguchi’s Always Dream Foundation. “City Center Bishop Ranch is such a beautiful facility and adding so much to the community,” says Yamaguchi. “A seasonal rink provides fun and—who knows?—could even get a future Olympian interested in skating. I’m really excited to work with Bishop Ranch and bring something I love to the community.”
