02 PLAY SAFE: GET INSURED get health insurance: SEVERAL OPTIONs All students of Anhalt University are required to have health insurance.Students planning to stay the whole program should obtrain german health insurance for students. everything covered: costs around 80,EURO. (suggested as there were problems with international insurances before). The Bauhaus Gästehaus is a dorm in the south of Dessau. It is a little far away from campus, but if you get a bike it should be no problem. All the rooms come with furniture. It is rent out by an organization called Bewos.
DWG www.dwgwohnen.de
DWG is the biggest renting company in Dessau. The price for the apartments is without utilities. For heating, electricity and water you have to make another contract with the DVV. Before signing something please check the contract carefully. Usually they have a running time. If you do not understand it, take it with you, before signing and ask someone to translate it for you (because all the contractS are in German) If you need internet you have to make a contract with a phone provider( Vodafone, O2, Telekom …). Please notice, that those internet contracts run at least 24 month! USUALLY apartments comes without furniture, but this you can sometimes get from leaving students or just ask for it on Facebook. Sometimes you can also find furniture on street, where people put it, when they don´t need it anymore (you just have to be faster than the refuse collection

On this website you have the opportunity to look for flatshares. In Germany it is really common for students to share apartments. THEY COME WITH NO FURNITURE TOO. FOR DETIALS ASK FUTURE FLATMATES. It is a good opportunity to meet new people and really nice to have company.

If you are planning on arriving by plane - closest airports will be the ones in Berlin and Airport Halle/Leipzig. ALL of them have good train connection to Dessau. But make sure the time of arrival is not too late at night, VERY LITTLE CHANCE TO GET A TRAIN (in this case you should think about getting a hotel in Berlin or Leipzig for one night). BUT CHECK ONLINE TRAIN SCHEDULES. When you arrive in Dessau and you don´t have a place to stay for the first nights you can got to a hotel or a youth hostel. If you have the possibilty to open a bank account in a german bank institution (e.g.Deutsche Bank, Dresdner Bank) from your home counry, we recommend to do so. CONTACT GERMAN CONSULATE FOR MORE INFORMATION FOR OPENNNING ACCOUNT FROM YOUR HOME COUNTRY Otherwise you have also the possibility to open a bank account upon your arrival in Dessau. REGISTRATION PROCESS WITH THE BANK IS A REQUIREMENT IN ANY CASE for blocked account the bank charges 50 euro. For this you‘ll need your passport and aDDITIONAL PHOTO copy of it. 06 BEING CONNECTED FOR FILLING ALL THE DOCUMENTS on THE PLACE PLEASE TRY TO BE CONNECTED TO THE MOBILE and NET (PLEASE HAVE YOUR PASSPORT FOR REGISTRATION) - telephone ( PRE-PAID SIM; CONTRACT) pre-paid sim card works without a contract and you can control the cost easily. With pre-paid cards it is also possible to book flat rates. contract. Mobile contracts run at least for 24 month. Once you made a contract it is almost impossible to get out of it, so please think twice before signing it. students had problems before. - internet (free in university, internet contract for private housing, prepaid) University: free Wi-Fi. ( PASSWORD AND USERNAME BY UNI) STUDENT dorms : 10 EURO a month (which can be cancelled any time). private housing : CHECK FLATMATES FOR WI fi OR so called internet stick- USB-drive that works with a pre-paid card (around 15EURO a month) own internet contract (around 20 – 30EURO a month), but always with a running time of at least 24 month. Supermarkets are open from Monday to Saturday. Most of them close at 8 pm (Kaufland closes at 10 pm, only Saturdays at 8pm). EDEKA, KAUFLAND And ALDi - avaliable for choice. google check the locations. There is a fruit market twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday in Zerbster StraSSe (right behind Rathhaus Center), THERE you can buy fresh fruits and vegetables. THERE IS A ECO MARKET IN DESSAU. LOCATED CENTRALLY. WORKING PERMANENTLY NON WORKING DAYS - holidays in Sachsen Anhalt (WS 2013/14, SoSe 2014) 10/03/13 – Day of German Unity 10/31/13 - Reformation Day 12/25+26/13 - Christmas Holidays 01/01/14 – New Year 01/06/14 – Epiphany 04/18/14 - Good Friday 04/21/14 - Easter Monday 05/01/14 - Labor Day 05/29/14 – Ascension 06/09/14 - Whit Monday During thESE days most institutions and shops are closed. University is closed as well, but please notice that it is up to the teacherS to decide if they want to have class (some of them want to teach since they are here anyway). Also watch out for changes in the Deutsche Bahn FOR NOTICE : EXPERIENCE ¬Rundfunkbeitrag (also known as GEZ) is a fee for television and radio. Since January 2013 they charge around 18EURO/month per apartment. That means if you live in a single apartment or a dorm, not sharing bathroom and kitchen, you have to pay the full price. If you live in a flat share the amount is divided by all the tenants.

It became a localmeeting point for students (every Monday and Thursday students get a discount of 25% on everything). has amazing little kino. there are several on running and supported projects by: - VorOrt ( HAUS AND LADEN LOCATIONS) - AG Kultur ( HARDENBERG) - PLUM ( MOVIE NIGHTS _LOCATION CAN CHANGE) VorOrt - is a project by design students of Anhalt university, and is focused on organization and display of student work and out of study creative activities.Organizes book fares, weekend markets - handmade items by design students, supports initiation and projects by students and creative individuals, supports exhibitions and events AG Kultur- is student organization run by the students and supported by the university. it is located on campus and main event spot for this one is hardenberg ( see on the map). AG kultur organizes parties, jam sessions, art and music social events. every thursday runs a movie at hardenberg. Plum -is a series of events and is launched by students from DIA , mAid and german speaking department PART OF SCHOOL. IT Is a short project and has potential to be developed further if students commit to it, as DIA / maid is a short term course. PLUM showed number of alternative and unconventional films from different cultures, represented by the students of those countries. Film was served with traditional snack from the country of the eve and social evenings. So if you don´t know where to go in your free time just create your own events (for some projects STUDY BUDDY PROGRAM THERE IS ALSO SUPPORT PROGRAM with assistance OF INTERNATIONAL OFFICE and RUN BY THE STUDENTS WHICH IS FOCUSED ON SOCIAL AND STUDENT LIFE SUPPORT.
