GIULIO D’ANNA PARKIN’SON In the past the father carried the son, now the roles are reversed. How they translate that on stage is incredibly gripping ... What a gift to each other, and to the audience...

Giulio is 33 and a choreographer. Stefano is 64 and has Parkinson Disease. Father and Son tell you a universal tale about the power between father and child. Bodies speak words that were never said. Their mouths shape the memories of both joy and sadness. Two different lives, a generation apart.

Bonanza is a documentary portrait on the officialy smallest town of Colorado: seven inhabitants, a city council and a mayor who lives 300km down the road. Located in the Rocky Mountains, these seven inhabitants had imagined a life in solitude, but are confronted with their few neighbours: fights, gossips, murder and a lawsuit that puts the further existence of Bonanza at risk. This city portrait consists of a scale model of the city (7m by 3m) and five screens (a screen for each house). Five simultaneous screens represent the five houses of the citizens of Bonanza. Cities where you get to know all the residents are rare. But in Bonaza this is possible. But in spite of this extremely small population, the residents hardly have any contact with each other. Bonanza is a microcosm of the world, the residents claim. Berlin portrays this world-in-miniature on a scale model of the town and five film screens - a “quintet documentary”.

Berlin portrays reality like a painter used to do: with a bit more color, lively angles of incidence and a brush setting that betrays a critical undertone. Knack Focus

Tourniquet offers a hypnotic experience and is one of the best plays of the year. The actors don’t utter a word, but it is the viewer who is left behind speechless at the end. De Standaard

With Tourniquet, the Belgian company Abattoir Fermé continues its course of silent and filmlike theatre and has made one of its most visually enthralling and magical works to date. Without the aid of any spoken text, the piece suggests the history and contours of a house and its three ‘ghosts’ - with Kreng’s intriguing soundscore as an invisible fourth character. Tourniquet focusses upon the ideas of rituals and trance and was inspired by (clandestine) exorcisms, still performed in modern day Europe. Tourniquet was selected for the Dutch Theatre Festival as one of the year’s best productions. The piece gained notoriety as one of Abattoir Fermé’s most critically acclaimed and successful productions. Mysterious, eerily beautiful, hypnotic, visually stunning and shocking to some, Tourniquet is the theatrical, trance-inducing counterpart of “The Exorcist” or the cinematic work of David Lynch.

In the most impossible ways he builds his staggering Utopia. When the house breathes, the mirror under neath it breaks. These are moments the whole world could stand or fall. Nick Steur lets the world stand. He harvests grace from pompous mass.

Once in a while something raises the hair on your neck. Something incredibly minimal, beautiful & breakable. This is that show. Small in approach, big in ideas. Since he was a child Nick Steur balances rocks on top of each other. No glue, cement or any other trick is involved. It’s all about concentration and finding the balance between your own force of will and the stone. Share some of his focus and realize that true happiness lies in the luxury of being occupied with one thing only.

Without even a single political reference, Ontroerend Goed’s Fight Night makes a precarious analysis of the consensus politics which our democratic system has fallen into. That’s impressive.

This brochure contains the very first edition of Big in Belgium: a series of shows from the Flemish part of Belgium. Each of the shows in this edition has been very successful on the European mainland and is now presented for the first time to Edinburgh audiences, some translated and adapted, ready for breaking new grounds in English-speaking territories. Following up on the past years’ successes of the multiaward winning company Ontroerend Goed (The Smile off Your Face; Once and for all…; Internal; Teenage Riot; Audience and All That is Wrong) and last year s SKaGeN whose show Bigmouth turned out to be one of the’ hidden gems of the Fringe, Big in Belgium will no doubt convince you that the current new wave of Flemish theatre makers is as diverse as it is packed with talent.

This first edition contains 5 shows carefully selected to reflect the quality and very best of Flemish theatre making. Some might make you sad, make you think or laugh. Sometimes you might even be shocked or at the same time delighted, but above all there is one thing all of this work has in common: it was created in an atmosphere of true belief in the lasting power and possibilities of live performance and there is no better place to celebrate this but at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Big in Belgium was created by: David Bauwens, Sophie De Somere, Liv Laveyne – Program Richard Jordan – Production David Bauwens & Wim Smet – Communication & Finances Martin Shippen – Press Nick Mattan – Design
